The study explores the impact of Covid-19 on pets and their owners using a structured questionnaire. One hundred fifty-seven (157) respondents were recruited from six veterinary clinics at strategic points within Accra. Only a third of owners gave their pet(s) special attention out of fear of contracting Covid-19 from their pet(s). 68.2 % of the respondents were interested in learning healthy pet-keeping tips from the electronic media and evident in their willingness (75.2 %) to embrace tele-veterinary services; a potential drift from traditional in-person way of providing veterinary services in Ghana. The decrease in household income (46.5 %), loss of employment for at least one person in the household (17.2 %) and associated spike in prices of pet related commodities affected the feeding of pets in about 44 % of respondents and ability to afford veterinary pet products (17.2 %). This is reflected in a 12.7 % reduction in the ability of pet owners to afford veterinary services. The observations made could be used as a basis for future research exploring the pet culture in Ghana and its evolution as a direct consequence of the pandemic.

This article employs quantile regressions to investigate the link between oil prices, gold prices, and stock market returns in five African oil-exporting nations: Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia. The analysis utilises daily data spanning from January 1, 2017, through September 30, 2021. Before the onset of COVID-19, oil played a pivotal role as a hedge in Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana, providing stability in both normal and bullish market conditions. Furthermore, it functioned as a diversifier in Egypt and Ghana during bearish market phases. However, as the pandemic unfolded, oil took on the characteristics of a safe haven in Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, and Tunisia, particularly notable during bearish and normal market conditions. Gold, prior to the pandemic, served as a hedge in Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tunisia, while also acting as a diversifier across both bearish and bullish market conditions in these economies. Conversely, during the pandemic, gold predominantly functioned as a diversifier in most oil-exporting African economies, with significant hedge properties observed specifically in Algeria and Ghana. The practical implications of these findings are significant for various stakeholders, including oil exploration and production firms, businesses in the transport and hospitality sectors, policymakers, and investors with stocks sensitive to oil and gold prices.

The double burden of tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major public health challenge that demands urgent and integrated approaches. The interplay between these two chronic conditions presents unique clinical and public health management challenges, as well as social and economic implications. We explored the bidirectional relationship between TB and DM, emphasizing how DM increases susceptibility to TB and complicates its management, while TB may exacerbate glycemic control in diabetic patients. This review underscores the challenges associated with the management of both diseases, obstacles in screening TB patients for DM and TB preventive therapy for DM since inadequate glycemic control can impact treatment outcomes. Several studies have investigated the disease interplay; however, the results have been equivocal, and this may be exerting negative impacts on the disease prevention and treatment. TB-diabetes comorbidity has been linked to poor treatment outcomes whereas TB prevention in people with DM at present is a dilemma. In addition to highlighting how urgent it is to address this comorbidity, this review offers a road map for better prevention, treatment, and control of several factors underlying the TB-diabetes syndemic interaction.

Fisheries, particularly small-scale fisheries, is recognized as a source of dietary diversity, food security, and poverty alleviation. Fish is widely regarded as a significant source of protein. Despite the significance of fisheries, it is faced with several challenges such as constant change in climate. This study was conducted to examine the perception of fisher folks on climate change and the relationship between socio-economic characteristics and adoption of climate smart fisheries using semi-structured questionnaire. Perception towards climate change and adoption of climate-smart fisheries were analyzed using statistical inferential statistics. The predictor of co-management as a mitigative measure for climate change in fisheries was also analyzed with an ordered logistic regression technique. The result showed that 92.5 % of the fishers have formal education. Majority of the fishers (98.3 %) have no access to storage facilities whilst 96.66 % have access to market. In addition, 31.66 % of the fishers have access to information on climatic and weather conditions. On the perception of climate change, 47.5 % of fishers perceived decrease in amount of rainfall as evidence of climate change whilst 66.6 % perceived decrease in sea level as evidence of climate change. A few fishers perceived an increase in humidity, change in temperature and wind-storm or sea breeze as evidence of climate change. Again, 48.33 % of the fishers agree to reduction of fleet's carbon emission whilst 33.33 % fishers disagreed to diversifying sources of household income as an adoption to climate-smart fisheries. Additional cost in the beginning of adoption of climate smart fisheries as a constraint was agreed upon by 50.00 % of fishers. The results of the ordered logistic regression show that age, education, having a second source of income and an increase of fuel subsidy are statistically significant to fishers perception of the extent to which co-management could contribute to address climate change was detected.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on tuberculosis (TB) treatment response using bacterial clearance as a surrogate marker. Method: We compared smear microscopy, culture, and tuberculosis molecular bacterial load assay (TB-MBLA) for treatment monitoring. Following that, bacterial clearance was longitudinally monitored among TB-only (TB without DM) and TB-diabetes (TBDM) patients using TB-MBLA. Results: Ninety-three participants, including 59 TB-only and 34 TBDM patients, were enrolled. TB-only patients exhibited higher upper zone infiltrations (32/35 vs 16/22, p = 0.059) suggesting a trend towards significance, and significantly more cavitation in the same zone (16/18 vs 7/13, p = 0.028). There was a high proportion of Mycobacterium africanum (Maf) among the TBDM cohort (p = 0.0044).At baseline, TB-only patients exhibited a higher average bacterial burden (4.49 logeCFU/mL) compared to the TBDM group (3.91 logeCFU/mL) (p = 0.042). The bacterial load in the TB-only group decreased significantly during treatment but the TBDM group experienced delayed clearance throughout the intensive phase of anti-TB treatment even at day 56 (p = 0.028). The TB-only group demonstrated a shorter median time to TB-MBLA conversion to negative (57 days) compared to the TBDM group (62 days) (p = 0.022). Conclusion: These findings underscore the urgent call for understanding the interplay between diabetes and TB, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions in optimizing TB care for individuals comorbid with diabetes.

This study assessed the microbial agents that cause CRBSIs and their antibiotic resistance patterns among patients with CVC undergoing maintenance haemodialysis. Patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) via CVC, at a tertiary hospital, between September 2021 to April 2022 were assessed in a cross-sectional study. Microbial cultures with respective antibiotic sensitivity patterns were determined for samples taken from blood, catheter insertion sites, catheters’ lumen, and tips. Antibiotic sensitivity patterns were determined using the disc diffusion methods.The culture positivity rate was 32.7% with a CRBSI prevalence rate of 34.2%. 47.1% of the bacteria cultured were Gram positive and 52.9% of the organisms cultured were Gram negative. Among the Gram positives, Coagulase negative Staphylococci (20.6%) was the most cultured organism, and these organisms were highly sensitive to vancomycin. Acinetobacter baumannii (17.6%) was the most common Gram negative organism isolated. All Gram negative organisms were susceptible to amikacin except for one resistant isolate of Acinetobacter baumannii.There is a high rate of antimicrobial resistance among patients on haemodialysis using CVCs. From the antibiogram, vancomycin and amikacin should be used as empiric antibiotics in treating CRBSIs among patients on MHD.

Diarrhoea, which is a clinical manifestation of various illnesses, is frequently observed in dogs. Regrettably, many dog owners find it difficult to provide comprehensive case histories, primarily because of limited interaction with their canine companions. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of faecal biochemical analytes in detecting and characterizing acute diarrhoea in dogs. Sixty-two domestic dogs were selected using the proportionate stratified sample technique. A structured questionnaire was used to collect demographic and clinical data. Faecal stool specimens from the dogs were obtained using the colon flush technique. The specimens were taken through biochemical analysis to determine urea, creatinine, total bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, gamma-glutamyl transferase and uric acid levels. Results showed a significant association between the diarrhoea status of the participants and their age, weight, breed, body size, source of last diet, period of inappetence, and other gastrointestinal signs (p < 0.050, respectively). Dogs that had not eaten in at least three days were five times more likely (p < 0.05) to have diarrhoea. Furthermore, miniature breeds were about six times more likely to develop diarrhoea (p < 0.05). Of the seven selected biochemical parameters, total faecal cholesterol was the most predictive index in diagnosing acute diarrhoea in dogs, with a likelihood ratio of 6.5, and it was the most accurate in predicting defecation stooling frequency and texture. In summary, in situations of inadequate case histories, measuring total faecal cholesterol could assist veterinarians in detecting diarrhoea and predicting its faecal stooling texture and frequency in dogs.

Background: Learning from incidents for accident prevention is a two-stage process, involving the investigation of past accidents to identify the causal factors, followed by the identification and implementation of remedial measures to address the identified causal factors. The focus of past research has been on the identification of causal factors, with limited focus on the identification and implementation of remedial measures. This research begins to contribute to this gap. The motivation for the research is twofold. First, previous analyses show the recurring nature of accidents within the Ghanaian mining industry, and the causal factors also remain the same. This raises questions on the nature and effectiveness of remedial measures identified to address the causes of past accidents. Secondly, without identifying and implementing remedial measures, the full benefits of accident investigations will not be achieved. Hence, this study aims to assess the nature of remedial measures proposed to address investigation causal factors. Method: The study adopted SMARTER from business studies with the addition of HMW (H – Hierarchical, M – Mapping, and W – Weighting of causal factors) to analyse the recommendations from 500 individual investigation reports across seven different mines in Ghana. Results: The individual and the work environment (79%) were mostly the focused during the search for causes, with limited focus on organisational factors (21%). Forty eight percentage of the recommendations were administrative, focussing on fixing the problem in the immediate affected area or department of the victim(s). Most recommendations (70.4%) were support activities that only enhance the effectiveness of control but do not prevent/mitigate the failure directly. Across all the mines, there was no focus on evaluating the performance of remedial measures after their implementation. Conclusion: Identifying sharp-end causes leads to proposing weak recommendations which fail to address latent organisational conditions. The study proposed a guide for effective planning and implementation of remedial actions.

Background and purpose: Cervical cancer is an important public health issue with a high incidence and death rate in Africa. It is mostly treated with Brachytherapy as the gold standard but its access is limited. This study set out to investigate the distribution and accessibility of brachytherapy units in Africa for the treatment of cervical cancer, and to provide some recommendations for increasing the quantity and accessibility of such equipment throughout the continent. Materials and methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Division of Human Health’s Directory for radiotherapy Centers (DIRAC) was the principal source of data for this study. The number of brachytherapy equipment in the 54 African countries was obtained from the DIRAC database. The number of cervical cancer cases was obtained from the GLOBOCAN 2022 database, and country’s income was calculated using the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita from the global economics database. All of these searches were conducted in February 2024. Results: Africa exhibited a greater number of cervical cancer cases. A total of one hundred (100) brachytherapy units were present across 84 radiotherapy centres spanning 20 African countries. Egypt and South Africa each possess 23 units, which accounts for 46% of the overall quantity. With just two brachytherapy facilities, Nigeria had the most cervical cancer cases. A significant quantity of brachytherapy unit was situated in countries of northern Africa. The quantity of these units varied among countries, from those without any to those with many, and was not only influenced by GDP per capita. Conclusion: Due to the rising incidence of cervical cancer in Africa, the number of brachytherapy equipment was woefully inadequate. Consequently, Africa requires partnerships and financial support to facilitate the quantity and accessibility of brachytherapy services. This will enable the provision of thorough and holistic care to patients and enhance their quality of life.

Lisdexamfetamine (LDX) is the only medication to have gained FDA approval for the treatment of binge eating disorder (BED). LDX treatment is generally effective at reducing binge eating symptoms but is associated with several unwanted side effects. How BED patients perceive the therapeutic efficacy vs. associated side effects of LDX has not been explored. We carried out a thematic analysis of 111 online reviews posted to the website Drugs.com by persons prescribed LDX to treat BED. Over the years, the world has faced numerous global uncertainties, each leaving a profound impact on the global economy and the financial market. This has increased the research on how these uncertainties affect various stocks. However, limited attention has been directed toward comprehending the combined influence of geopolitical risk, global policy uncertainty, and infectious disease equity market volatility on heterogeneous stock returns. This study sets out to investigate the impact of geopolitical risk (GPRH), global policy uncertainty (GPU), infectious disease equity market volatility (ID-EMV), and their correlations on stock returns in a heterogeneous market context, employing wavelet coherence analysis. The study's outcomes emphasize the temporal nature of these uncertainties’ effects on financial markets. Furthermore, our research shows that there is a stronger influence on stock returns from various markets when the combined effects of GPU, ID-EMV, and GPRH are taken into account than when the effects are taken into account separately. This implies that times when all of these factors are operating concurrently will see greater fluctuations in markets than times when only one of them acts in the market. The findings of the study provide significant insight into the complex relationship between economic indicators and stock market performance, allowing investors and policymakers to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of global financial markets.

The widespread prevalence of illegal Artisanal Small-Scale Mining has raised significant concerns about its environmental and health impacts. This study investigates the effects of two mining methods (alluvial and chamfi) on soil physical, chemical, and microbial properties four years after mining in three municipalities of the Western Region of Ghana. The study identified four species of Aspergillus fungi (niger, flavus, ochraceous and fumigatus) and Trichoderma species in both mined and control soils. The quantity of A. fumigatus was significantly higher in control plots compared to mined plots. In alluvial sites, bacterial numbers were significantly higher in control plots than in mined plots, while in chamfi sites, bacterial numbers did not differ significantly between mined and control plots. Soil texture in both mined sites was predominantly sandy loam and loamy sand, with a generally high silt to clay ratio. Mined plots at both sites were significant and more acidic (p < 0.05) than the control plots. Additionally, cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (P), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+) levels were significantly higher in control plots compared to mined plots. The control plots also exhibited higher base saturation and lower exchangeable acidity than mined plots. Bacteria count at Chamfi sites was generally higher at mined areas than the control sites, with the reverse being the case for Alluvial sites. Soil chemical parameters were higher at control areas than at mined sites, irrespective of the mining approach used. However, there was no clear pattern of differences in soil chemical properties at Chamfi and Alluvial mined sites. This study provides insights and additional perspectives for improving decision-making and guiding the potential restoration of these areas.

The ability of photocatalysis to clean up environmental contamination, notably in the treatment of water and air, has received extensive research. The composite materials synthesized by the coprecipitation method were made of ZnO and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with various concentrations of lanthanum doping (La-ZnO). It was discovered that La metal ions were evenly distributed throughout the layered stacking structures of ZnO nanosheet, which had an impact on the band structure and increased the rate of electron-hole separation and visible light absorption. First-principles calculations show that La-doped ZnO-gC3N4 possesses a direct band gap and a type-II band structure with the conduction band minimum and the valence band maximum located in separate layers. A built-in electric field from the gC3N4 to the La-doped ZnO has been established through an analysis of charge density difference, Bader charge, work function, and band alignment. The electron-hole pair becomes spatially separated as a result, which increases the photodegradation activity. High interfacial charge transfer, efficient charge separation and migration, and high visible light optical absorbance were caused by the direct coating of ZnO on an ultra-thin g-C3N4 layer. The 0.6 % La-doped ZnO-gC3N4 degraded 97 % of the bromothymol blue (BB) dye, which was four times higher than the bulk ZnO, which could remove only about 21 % of the dye at the same time. The combined effects of lower photo corrosion, higher solar light usage owing to a hollow structure and heterostructured semiconductor photocatalysis contribute to this increased photocatalytic activity. The capacity of La-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 nanocomposite to effectively break down BB dye via photocatalysis suggests that it has the potential to address the problems associated with dye pollution in water systems.

The growth of trees in urban areas brings forth an extensive array of services and disservices, the comprehension of which can assist urban forestry professionals in advancing a more sustainable urban forest ecosystem. This paper assesses the perception of urban residents on the services and disservices from urban trees in a less represented geographic area. Using a mixed method approach, primary data was gathered from 396 urban inhabitants in the study area. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess perception of services and disservices from the urban trees. Using a principal component analysis, it was found out that the most important services provided by urban trees were health and climate improvement as well as energy, esthetic and environmental benefits. These services explained 50.8% of citizens’ perception variance and are linked to basic human needs. Additionally, the Monte Carlo parallel analysis-based on exploratory factor analysis revealed that the underlying problems that needs to be addressed were related to poor management and maintenance of urban trees, destruction of infrastructure by trees and issues related to safety including parks and gardens serving as hideouts for criminals in the city. These components were predicting 53.3% of the problems and disservices of urban trees. The results provide a valuable insight for urban forestry professionals. The findings imply that institutional assistance should be increased, and the legislative structure changed to address these challenges to sustain urban forestry.

Query fever, also known as Q fever, is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii. It is a cause of abortion in livestock and presents as a febrile illness in humans. A correlation between the incidence of the disease in humans and abortion in goats and sheep farms has been reported in countries such as the Netherlands and Australia. In Ghana, the occurrence of Q fever in both livestock and humans has not been fully explored. This study sought to determine the seroprevalence of Q fever in livestock in Nkawkaw, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Sera obtained from 92 sheep from 12 farms were tested using the indirect multi-species ELISA for the detection of anti-Coxiella burnetii antibodies. Animal demographics, farms’ proximity to human settlement and history of abortion in relation to the Q fever status were assessed.The overall prevalence of Q fever was 13.0 % [95 % CI 6.9–21.6] (12/92). Both sexes were equally affected, with a sex-specific prevalence of 13.0 % each. The farm-specific prevalence was 50 %. Abortions were reported on eight (8) of the 12 farms, and all farms were located less than 200 m from human habitation. Only proximity of farm to human settlement showed statistical significance. Q fever is prevalent in Nkawkaw and requires the attention of both animal and health authorities, using the One- Health approach to nip any future epidemics in its bud.

Artisanal Small-Scale mining (ASM) is a major land use activity in Ghana. Despite its tremendous contribution to livelihoods, ASM is largely unregulated in the country, illegally operated, leaving most mined out sites unrehabilitated. In this study, we explored the extent to which early succession naturally regenerating plants on two abandoned illegal artisanal small scale mined-out sites (Chamfi and Alluvial types) remediate heavy metals. The study was undertaken in three districts of the Western Region of Ghana. Plots were randomly established in the alluvial, chamfi and reference (control) sites. Within each plot, samples of soil and naturally regenerating plants were collected for determination of bioaccumulation potential, translocation and contamination factor of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results revealed that the concentration of As, Cd, Hg, Pb from soil samples, as well as roots and shoots of the plants collected from the two mined sites were significantly higher than the concentrations in the samples from the control plots. Our results show that heavy metal removal is more significant in plants at the alluvial mined soils than those at the chamfi sites. C. pubescens, C. odorata, and M. pudica were observed to be better cadmium translocators than the other vegetations sampled. Furthermore, plants at the alluvial sites recorded higher Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) in the roots than those at the chamfi sites for lead and arsenic. The study implies that natural regeneration of early successional species can promote contaminant removal on abandoned artisanal mine sites. They however vary in their capacity to accumulate different metals on abandoned soils. Within the context of illegal ASM prevalence, our results suggest that efforts should be made to encourage and minimize disturbances to the growth of early succession plant species as short-term alternative measures in abandoned artisanal mined sites, where reclamation is often neglected.

Purpose: The increasing resistance to onychomycosis treatment globally is a major concern as it results in treatment failures. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) in a gel formulation for treating mild to moderate Candida-associated onychomycosis using Zataria multiflora (Zt) essential oils. Methods: The characteristics of Zataria multiflora-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (Zt-NLCs) were validated using a carbopol gel (1 % w/w). In vitro tests were conducted using CLSI M60 standards to evaluate the susceptibility of ten commonly encountered dermatophyte species to antifungal agents. A clinical study was conducted involving 40 volunteers randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving the Zt-NLCs gel and the other receiving a placebo, using a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. The objective was to assess clinical manifestations and mycological findings after topical application for 2 and 4 weeks. The causative agents' species were identified using a PCR-RFLP method. Results: The preparation of Zt-NLCs gel resulted in a uniform suspension of spherical nanoparticles with favourable characteristics and no cytotoxic effects. Sekondi-Takoradi is the most urbanized metropolis in the Western region of Ghana. Over the past two decades, it has experienced rapid shifts in both population density and land cover. Unfortunately, these transformations have significantly altered the natural landscape and expanded urban coverage. Previous studies have not established enough evidence on land use and land cover changes in the metropolis. For this reason, this study examined the existence, rate, and spatial distribution of land use and land cover as well as the future changes in land cover in the metropolis. Landsat imagery spanning from 1991, 2009, 2016, to 2023 provided the basis for evaluating the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use and cover within the metropolis. The Random Forest Classification algorithm was employed to categorize the images into three distinct classes: water, vegetation, and built-up areas. Analysis revealed a rapid growth in built-up areas by 63.08 km² (32.91 %), accompanied by a decrease in vegetation and water coverage by 60.99 km² (31.82 %) and 2.08 km² (1.09 %) respectively. This highlights the accelerating urbanization trend, emphasizing the critical need for vigilant monitoring and controlled urban expansion to mitigate potential adverse effects. Projections for 2030 indicate further changes with water areas decreasing to 1.21 km² (0.63 %), vegetation diminishing to 95.31 km² (49.73 %), and built-up areas expanding to 95.14 km² (49.64 %). This signifies a significant shift towards built-up areas, altering the metropolis' land cover composition and potentially impeding the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11. Understanding these changes in land use and land cover holds significant value for policymakers, enabling them to effectively monitor and safeguard natural resources.

Seismic activities pose significant challenges to societies globally. Therefore, it is crucial to understand their occurrence, patterns, and impacts. By studying seismic activities, including earthquakes, researchers can investigate their occurrence, distribution, and characteristics which can provide effective management and risk reduction strategies. The southern part of Ghana is prone to earthquakes and this study aims to shed more light into the nature of seismic events in the area and country at large. A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA technique across three electronic databases (SCOPUS, Dimensions and Google Scholar) to identify relevant studies published between 2000 and 2023. Extraction of data and quality assessment were performed in order to ensure reliability and validity of included studies. Results identified only 17 papers from published records to meet the inclusion criteria. Despite the grave threat earthquakes pose to vital infrastructure and human life in Ghana, research in this area remains remarkably deficient. Our findings underscore the urgent need for further study given the catastrophic potential of seismic disasters in the region. Moreover, upon scrutinizing the methodologies deployed in extant literature concerning seismic activity in Ghana, a recurring constraint that emerged was the scarce availability of data. In essence, this study offers an indispensable panorama of earthquake research in Ghana, bridging the existing knowledge chasm on seismic phenomena in the region. The insights gleaned from this review promise to fortify our comprehension of Ghana's seismic activities, thereby bolstering the country's capabilities for more effective preparedness and response strategies.

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Introduction: Benign Prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the age-related conditions that reduce the quality of life in aging men. Treatment modalities range from surgical, use of allopathic drugs, to phytotherapy. Allopathic drugs such as Finasteride and Tamsulosin are often considered to have adverse side effects such as reduced libido and erectile dysfunction. In some countries finasteride is often recommended for BPH although some prefer the use of Croton membranaceus (CM). However, some indigenes combine the two. The study therefore sought to determine impact of this combination therapy of CM and on BPH histomorphologically. Methods: Thirty-five (35) male Sprague Dawley rats (200–250 g) made up of the following groups were established with 5 rats in each group: Group 1, served as the control group; group 2 (model group); group 3 (0.5 mg/kg.b.wt Finasteride- positive control); group 4 [30 mg/kg b.wt. CM (low dose)]; group 5 [300 mg/kg b.wt. CM (high dose)]; group 6 (30 mg/kg b.wt. CM plus 0.5 mg/kg. b.wt. Finasteride); group 7 (300 mg/kg b.wt. CM plus 0.5 mg/kg b.wt. Finasteride). Groups 2–7 were castrated, allowed to rest for 7 days and BPH-induced by administering 5 mg/kg.b.wt testosterone propionate subcutaneously daily for 28 days. CM and Finasteride were administered for 28 days by oral gavage. The prostate and its accessory organs were weighed and examined histologically. Results: In the untreated group (model group) fibromuscular stroma showed the typical characteristic of high epithelial folds with apparent typical hyperplasia. The Finasteride group showed increased rate of apoptosis and progressive decrease in epithelial cell size. At the lower dose of CM, not enough apoptotic areas were observed. However, multiple layers of acinar epithelia were noticed. At the higher dose of CM, few apoptotic cells were seen with acini fluid reduction. The combination of Low dose CM and Finasteride led to fluid level reduction in the acini accompanied by fat droplets and reactive cells infiltration. At a higher dose of CM, papillary fronds were not protruded into the acini. However, acini fluid appeared coagulated. The combination treatment did not have any adverse hepatorenal effect, nor did it change PSA significantly. Conclusion: No overt advantage was seen in this combination therapy, although higher doses of CM in tandem with finasteride may not be advisable. However, there was good tolerability.

This study investigated smallholder farmers’ perceived motivations for the adoption and implementation of climate information services (CIS) in the Atwima Nwabiagya District, Ghana. Specifically, the study answered the following research questions. (i) What is the perception of smallholder farmers on climate change and variability in the Atwima Nwabiagya District?; (ii) What are the CIS accessed and used by the smallholder farmers for farm management decisions?; (iii) What are the perceived motivations for the adoption and implementation of CIS by smallholder farmers?; and; (iv) What are the barriers confronting smallholder farmers in adopting and implementing CIS? Primary data was collected through questionnaire surveys with 200 farming households and four key informant interviews in four selected communities (Kobeng, Seidi, Wioso, and Nkawie Panin) in the study district. Results showed that smallholder farmers perceived climate change and variability through increased windstorms and thunderstorms, variable rainfall, and increased temperature patterns. The surveyed farmers also perceived that the climatic changes affect their agricultural activities adversely. However, the smallholder farmers accessed and used CIS including weather warnings (86%), daily weather forecasts (70%), and seasonal forecasts (60%) to manage climatic risks on the farm. Results also showed that the smallholder farmers were motivated by critical factors including improvement in the acquisition of proactive measures (92%), increased knowledge of climatic patterns that affect food stock (91%), and a reduction in loss of stock produced (88%) to access and use CIS. Despite this, the smallholder farmers were confronted with key barriers in their uptake and utilization of CIS. These were the timeliness of CIS (73%), a lack of weather symbols in the forecasts (65%), and inadequate information on seasonal forecasts for long-term planning (61%). The study concluded that the motivations for smallholder farmers using CIS in the study district may vary depending on their context, goals, and challenges. However, the general motivation is to enhance smallholder farmers’ farm planning and risk management by using weather and climate forecasts to make better decisions on crop selection, planting dates, input use, pest and disease control, irrigation, harvesting, and marketing.

In this research, organic waste was subjected to hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) using faecal sludge as the water source. HTC is a sustainable method for converting organic waste into valuable hydrochar. However, the use of portable water as a reaction medium in HTC is environmentally unsustainable and increases operational costs. The aim of this study was to optimize HTC operating parameters such as residence time, temperature, and biomass to water (BTW) ratio for maximizing both higher heating value (HHV) and hydrochar yield and also to determine the effects of these operating parameters on the hydrochar properties. This study utilized a Box Behnken design within the response surface methodology to identify optimal HTC conditions. Temperature was varied between 180 and 250 °C, residence time between 30 min and 120 min, and BTW ratio between 1 and 10. Volatile matter percentage was reduced in the hydrochar compared to that of the feedstock. A progressive rise in carbon percentage and a decline in oxygen percentage were observed with increasing temperatures. Temperature and residence time were the most significant factors affecting HHV, on the other hand, temperature and BTW ratio were the most significant factors that affected hydrochar yield. Numerical optimization of the factors revealed that a maximum HHV of 28.409 MJ/kg was obtained at 250 °C, 116 min, and a 1:9 BTW ratio, while an ideal hydrochar yield of 57.491% was obtained at 242 °C, 95 min and a BTW ratio of 1:9. This study highlights the environmental sustainability of utilizing faecal sludge as a water source in HTC, presenting a promising possibility for transforming organic waste into valuable hydrochar while addressing concerns related to water use.

We present evidence that technological advancement can attenuate the harmful effect of financial outreach on environmental sustainability among 58 Middle-Income countries for the period between 2004 and 2021 inclusively. We reached the conclusion after employing the two-step System General Method of Moment Estimation technique to deal with endogeneity due reverse causality. The findings indicate that factors like bank branches, ATMs, credit to the private sector, credit bureaus, and bank depositors have a negative influence on environmental sustainability. The study also highlights a favourable relationship between TFP and environmental sustainability. In the end, we found that TFP plays a crucial role in offsetting the adverse effects of financial outreach on the environmental sustainability. Based on the results, it is recommended that MICs assess their financial outreach activities to prevent compromising sustainability goals. Furthermore, promoting technological advancement is essential in achieving sustainability and mitigating the negative impacts of financial outreach on environmental sustainability.

Food security in developing regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa is a top priority in global development discourse, as evidenced in Sustainable Development Goal 2. Yet, high climate vulnerability poses serious challenges to food security in Africa even though the literature is inconclusive. Using data from 40 selected Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries from 2000 to 2021, this paper investigates the extent to which climate variability affects food security in SSA. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to construct a food security index derived from its four dimensions (availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability). The proxies for climate variability included precipitation, temperature, and CO2 emissions. The Panel Corrected Standard Error (PCSE) technique, which takes into account the cross-sectional dependency, serial correlation, and heteroscedasticity, was employed. The empirical results show that precipitation and CO2 emissions influence food security positively, while the association between temperature and food security is negative. Indeed, achieving food security in Africa requires robust and feasible policies capable of mitigating climate vulnerability and impacts on the continent.

Organic contaminants pose a grave danger to both the surroundings and public health, which emphasizes the urgent need for efficient decomposition techniques. Building a composite and adding a cocatalyst can both enhance the transfer of photogenerated electrons, which are useful strategies to increase photocatalytic efficiency. This study sought to synthesize cerium–doped ZnO–rGO nanoparticles with varying concentrations of Ce for visible–light photocatalytic degradation of bromothymol blue dye in water. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, x–ray diffraction, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results disclosed that the photoactivity of the 0.6% Ce–ZnO–rGO was the highest and degraded 92% of bromothymol blue dye under visible light within 180 min (k = 1.072 ×10–2 min–1) compared to the pristine ZnO which only degraded the dye by about 22% (k = 1.15 ×10−3 min−1). The band gap of the pure ZnO was estimated to be 3.09 eV and that of the best performing composite (0.6% Ce) to be 2.81 eV which we suggest are responsible for the improved photodegradation. The pseudo–first–order photocatalytic kinetic has a strong correlation value of 0.99. The Ce–ZnO–rGO composites offer a lot of potential for cleaning the environment.

Land use land cover change, particularly deforestation has significant implications for global climate and socio-ecological systems as well as resulting ecosystem services from natural systems. In Ghana, the demand for fuel, food, and fibre is projected to be the driver of significant expansion of Croplands/mixed vegetation, resulting in degradation and deforestation of natural ecosystems. This research presents a spatiotemporal analysis of land use/cover change in the Bobiri forest and its surrounding areas in Ghana's moist semi-deciduous forest zone. The study aims to investigate the specific changes in dominant land use land cover (LULC) types in the area using land intensity analyses and to analyse the prevalence of deforestation leakage across the Bobiri Forest Reserve (BFR, a protected area) and its surrounding environs from 1986 and 2022. The study used measured land-cover changes at different levels, including intervals, categories, and transitions. The analysis revealed significant changes in land use intensity across different land classes in the area. The overall rate of land use and land cover change exhibited acceleration, indicating extensive land development throughout the studied periods. Notably, Croplands/mixed vegetation and non-vegetated areas experienced the most gains, while the closed forest class consistently declined. Transitions from forests to Croplands/mixed vegetation were observed, highlighting the conversion of natural vegetation for agricultural purposes. Additionally, the results reveal ongoing leakages in the buffer zone of the BFR as compared to the forest reserve with an annual deforestation rate of (0.64 %) and (0.06 %) respectively from 1986 to 2022, with non-vegetated areas and croplands/mixed vegetation dominating the periphery of protected forest areas. The study recommends implementing policy measures specifically geared towards protecting the buffer zone within a 10 km radius. This is particularly important to the entire buffer zone of the protected area (PA) which is facing deforestation leakage, posing a substantial threat to conservation efforts by exposing the PA to various climatic threats.

The traditional use of medicinal plants in Sub-Saharan health management lacks thorough toxicological evaluations, particularly concerning lethal dose levels. This study aims to assess the acute and sub-acute toxicity of Reissantia indica whole-plant extract (RIE) in male Sprague-Dawley rats, with a focal point on delineating its safety profile while exploring potential therapeutic applications.RIE, obtained through precise cold maceration in 70 % ethanol, underwent rigorous analysis, revealing diverse secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and glycosides. Renowned for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, these compounds enhance RIE's pharmacological potential.In the acute toxicity study, RIE was orally administered at 500 and 5000 mg/kg. Sub-acute toxicity involved oral administration of the extract at various doses (5, 50 and 500 mg/kg) over 28 days, with comprehensive assessments, including hematological, biochemical, and histopathological evaluations.Results from the acute toxicity showed no mortality, suggesting a median lethal dose (LD50) exceeding 5000 mg/kg and indicating a substantial margin of safety. Sub-acute toxicity investigations, spanning 28 days revealed no significant changes in body and organ weights, hematological and biochemical parameters, or histopathological signs compared to the control group. Histological examination of kidney, liver, heart, and lung sections from treated animals showed no signs of degeneration.This study, to our knowledge, pioneers a comprehensive investigation into the toxicity profile of Reissantia indica's whole-plant ethanolic extract, addressing a significant gap in existing literature on medicinal plant safety in the Sub-Saharan region.

The incorporation of traditional medicine into the mainstream health care delivery system particularly in some developing countries such as Ghana has resulted in reliable access to herbal medicines and their safe use. This has also led to a surge in the search for herbal alternatives, reformulation, and development of herbal medications in treating and managing diseases such as diabetes. Currently, the surging price of orthodox antidiabetics and their reported adverse effects from long term use has contributed to many Ghanaians switching to the use of phytomedicines as alternatives. The aim of this study is to formulate tea from the leaves of Tapinanthus bangwensis, family Loranthaceae to serve as an additional remedy for the management of diabetes.For standardization, quality control, and authentication of the formulation, FTIR, and HPLC analysis were conducted. The safety profile of the tea via determination of median lethal dose (LD50), microbial load, essential elements and toxic metal contents were also assessed. In addition, the pH, uniformity of mass, total water extractive and optimization of the extraction method were also investigated.The FTIR showed the presence of alcohols, esters, phenols and aromatic compounds. The HPLC fingerprint also showed 23 peaks with the highest peak having a retention time of 15.4 min. The extract also recorded a pH of 7.43 ± 0.02 at 26.1 °C and total water extractive of 39.37 ± 0.05 %w/w. The tea passed the uniformity of mass test with an average net mass of 3.0 ± 0.02 g. Optimum extraction of the tea was realised with 250 mL of freshly boiled water. The formulated tea was found to be safe since the determined LD50 was 50 times more than the daily dose. The microbial load, elemental and toxic metal contents were also within acceptable limits.This study has shown the possibility of introducing this tea at a safe dose as an additional herbal remedy for the management of diabetes.

The study examined organic vegetable attributes, consumer decisions and consumption patterns of consumers in Ghana. A sample of 399 consumers was selected using a simple random sampling technique and data was collected through structured questionnaires. The study analyzed the important attributes of organic vegetables using Kendall's coefficient of concordance. The factors influencing consumers' decision to consume organic vegetables and the proportion of their total expenditure allocated to organic vegetables was analyzed using Cragg's double hurdle model. Finally, ordered logit regression was employed to analyse the factors influencing the consumption patterns of organic vegetables consumers. The results revealed that consumers prioritize health concerns and sensory attributes when purchasing organic vegetables as these were identified as the most important attributes. Also, socioeconomic factors, viz. age group, educational level and income level, as well as institutional factors, viz. market type, availability of organic vegetables and accreditation, significantly influenced the decision and expenditure on organic vegetables. In addition, consumers exhibited irregular consumption patterns, and a significant proportion of consumers acquired information about organic vegetables through family and friends. Furthermore, the ordered logit regression analysis revealed several factors that significantly influenced the consumption patterns of organic vegetables. These include age category, educational level, household head, household size, income level, type of market, time to market, and accreditation. The study recommends that government and other stakeholders should consider consumers' consumption patterns, attributes of organic vegetables they consider prior to purchasing as well as factors influencing their decision-making when developing marketing strategies and policies for organic vegetable farmers. This approach can help meet consumer demands and help improve the development and promotion of organic vegetables in the market.

This study utilizes the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to investigate the interconnectedness of green bond with various financial markets, aiming to clarify their relationship with global economic uncertainty and their impact on returns. After a comprehensive search of pertinent research papers from January 2016 to September 2023, 79 relevant articles were identified. The analysis delves into the evolution of research on green bonds' interactions with economic policy uncertainty considering the financial markets, analytical methodologies, contributions to the field, and the role of green bonds under both normal and extreme market conditions. The study reveals noteworthy findings: firstly, the interplay between green bonds and financial markets is influenced by macroeconomic factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, which were significant sources of economic policy uncertainty during the study period. Secondly, during times of global economic uncertainties, green Bonds act as net transmitters of spillovers in the short term but shifts to net receivers in the long term, positioning them as strategic hedging assets rather than safe-havens, particularly against spillovers from crude oil and CO2 emission in times of economic uncertainties. Additionally, the review highlights prevalent methodologies employed to assess the relationship between global economic policy uncertainty and green bonds. Some of which include quantile approaches, the Diebold & Yilmaz 2012 spillover index, as well as various models like VAR models, GARCH models, ARDL models. Notably, certain countries like China, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam emerge as key contributors to this research domain. The review not only consolidates existing knowledge but also provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers regarding green bonds in terms of risk management and asset allocation, while also pointing towards potential avenues for future research in this field.

Aedes aegypti is an important vector of arboviral diseases including dengue and yellow fever. Despite the wide distribution of this mosquito species, there are limited data on the ecology of Ae. aegypti in Ghana. In this study, we report on the oviposition preference and the larval life tables of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in Accra, Ghana. The oviposition preference of the mosquitoes to three habitat types (car tyres, drums and bowls) was measured by setting up ovitraps. We recorded the presence and abundance of larvae every 3 days. Two-hour-old Ae. aegypti larvae were introduced and raised in three habitat types to undertake larval life tables. The number of surviving larvae at each developmental stage was recorded daily until they emerged as adults. Sand is a crucial resource for the construction of urban infrastructure and constitutes an integral part of the built environment. In Ghana, terrestrial sand mining on farmlands is widespread in the rural and peri-urban communities adjoining the country's capital, Accra. Despite an estimated mining volume of 765 truckloads per day, corresponding to about 4.55 Mio m3 annually, the governance of sand has received little research attention. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper examines the scope and governance of terrestrial sand mining around Accra. Qualitative data were collected from 30 key informants, including landowners, officials of local government authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission (MINCOM), sand miners, truck drivers, and staff of real estate companies. Besides, three Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were held with Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs), complemented by a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the mining process and sand trucking. The results showed that sand mining in the study areas was governed by several regulatory agencies with limited inter-institutional collaboration. Illegal sand mining was widespread in the study areas due to bureaucratic licensing procedures, inadequate collaboration among the regulators, bribery of some regulatory officials by the miners, insufficient monitoring of miners, particularly at night, and landowners' preference for sand mining over farming as a result of prompt monetary gains. The revenues from sand mining accrued to the miners, landowners, and truck drivers who controlled capital or land, while the livelihoods of the majority of the local residents were negatively affected due to the environmental degradation. The findings call for a review of the existing licencing process and collaboration among the regulatory agencies to foster enforcement of the existing laws to ensure sustainable sand mining around Accra.

Iron deficiency is commonly referred to as anaemia which is a general public health problem that normally occurs as a result of a reduction in red blood cells which is common in developing countries such as Africa. In this study, machine learning algorithms such as CNN, k-NN, Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree and SVM were utilized for the study to detect anaemia in children using conjunctiva images. The images were segmented into their various CIELAB colour space components and the ROI from each image was retrieved. The dataset was split randomly into 70:10:20, which were then used to train, validate, and test the models, as appropriate. The CNN achieved the highest accuracy (98.45 %). The findings of this study demonstrate that non-invasive techniques are essential for detecting anaemia in children. This study deploys a cost-effective mechanism, and result-orientated, to detect anaemia in developing communities where health facilities, resources, and personnel are scarce.

Anemia is a public health issue with serious ramifications for human health globally. Anemia particularly affects pregnant women and children from 6 to 59 months old even though every individual is at risk. Anemia occurs when the Hb level is below its normal threshold or when the red blood cells are weakened or destroyed. To discover medical remedies on time, early detection or diagnosis of anemia assist patients to understand their condition.The invasive approach for anemia detection is costive and time-consuming as compared to the non-invasive approach which is reliable and suitable for developing communities where medical resources and personnel are inadequate. This study uses palpable palm images (dataset) collected from 710 participants in selected hospitals in Ghana. The images were extracted, segmented and converted into RGB percentile to train, validate and tested the machine learning models. A hybrid model was developed with the application of ensemble learning models using the R programming language on the R Studio platform. Stacking, voting, boosting and bagging ensemble model techniques were used to build the hybrid models, the stacking ensemble model achieved an accuracy of 99.73 ​%. The study justifies that ensemble models are efficient for medical disease diagnosis or detection such as anemia.

Using first−principles DFT calculations and taking into account the impact of in−plane biaxial strain, we thoroughly explore the optical, electronic, mechanical, transport, and photocatalytic properties of Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH. The most stable configuration of Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH is mechanically, thermally and dynamically stable. Moreover, Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH gives rise to an indirect semiconductor band gap (2.34 eV). The vdWH forms type−II band alignment, indicating that the photogenerated carriers are spatially separated due to the internal electric field, thus enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results show that Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH under biaxial strain of ± 4% at pH = 0 is a promising candidate for water splitting. More importantly, it was found that the ΔGH of Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH (−0.18 eV) is smaller than those of the monolayers. Moreover, Al2OS/Ga2SSe vdWH has remarkably higher electrical conductivity than corresponding monolayers in n − type doping region, responsible for large power factor and suitable Seebeck coefficient, making it promising for thermoelectric device applications. It is worth noting that the vdWH offers important theoretical guidance for the development of next−generation optoelectronics, thermoelectric and solar energy devices.

Background: Deaths due to cardiovascular diseases is on the rise, with hypertension as its most important risk factor. Effective management of hypertension, however, remains a challenge. Globally, only one in five adults with hypertension have it under control. The situation is worse in sub-Saharan Africa where hypertension prevalence is highest. Telepharmacy presents a great opportunity to enhance the way we address hypertension management. Objectives: This study sought to determine the effectiveness of pharmaceutical care interventions implemented through telepharmacy on medication adherence, practice of therapeutic lifestyles and overall blood pressure control among patients with hypertension. Methods: This was a randomized control trial conducted among individuals with hypertension recruited from two Ghanaian hospitals from May 2022 to December 2022. Patients with confirmed diagnosis of hypertension were recruited and assigned into a control or intervention group. Both groups were followed for six months with the intervention group receiving telepharmacy services in addition to standard clinical care. Outcome measures included changes in blood pressure, medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, identification and resolution of pharmaceutical care issues. Results: One hundred and eighteen (118) patients with hypertension were involved in the study. Background: Prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) is a novel procedure in West Africa and Ghana. A thorough understanding of the prostate artery's (PA) anatomy and pattern is required for successful prostatic arterial embolization and to guarantee targeted intervention. This study focuses on prostate arterial supply in adult males, including prevalence, variability, and imaging pattern. Methodology: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted, at Euracare Advanced Diagnostics and Heart Centre. Patients who presented for Computed Tomography Angiography of the pelvis were included in the study. A total of 52 males were included and 104 pelvic CT angiography (one for each side) were analyzed, including: prostatic artery diameter, prostatic gland volume and prostate artery branching pattern. The PA branching pattern was classified using de Assis et al. classification. Result: Thirty-seven (71.15%) men had enlarged prostate volume (>30ml). On each side there was only one prostatic artery and no accessory one was found. Only three types of arterial branching were identified: type I, II,III. The type I artery was the most common origin 58.7% (61/104). PA originating from the anterior division of the internal iliac artery (type II) and the type III is from the internal pudendal artery, accounted for 16.3% (17/104) and 25% (26/104) respectively. Conclusion: The most frequent type of PA origin was type I followed by type III then II. Knowing the different and most frequent types of anatomy of PA may help standardization and effectiveness of the PAE in developing countries.

Integrating resilience attributes into local plans is considered an important step in enhancing disaster risk reduction. However, the extent to which resilience is captured in local disaster management plans remains underexplored. This paper utilizes content analysis to examine the integration of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's (UNDRR) resilience attributes across 11 cities in Metro Manila. Results show strong integration in governance and risk identification while gaps exist in ecosystem protection, city-to-city learning, and disaster victims' participation in recovery planning. The paper recommends introducing metropolitan-level platforms for inter-city learning, turning local authorities' attention towards nature-based solutions, and including disaster victims in the recovery planning process.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health challenge caused by the ability of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, protozoans and viruses to survive the effects of drugs that hitherto were effective against them. This study sought to investigate the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their corresponding molecular determinants in fish farms of the Central and Western Regions of Ghana. Management practices and antibiotic use at the fish farms were obtained through the administration of a questionnaire. Coliform and Gram-positive bacterial loads of catfish (Clarias gariepinus), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) intestinal microbiota, and pond water samples recovered on MacConkey Agar and Mannitol Salt Agar were determined. Bacterial isolates were identified using various biochemical assays. Antibiotic resistance profiles and possible responsible genes of bacterial isolates were determined using the disc diffusion and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods respectively. The study revealed that none of the fish farm managers admitted using antibiotics for prevention and treatment of diseases and no major disease outbreak had ever been recorded. Poor wastewater management remains a critical health and environmental challenge in most developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa due to the lack of adequate infrastructure for collection and treatment. This study evaluated the performance and methane production of a full-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor of capacity 18000 m3/d, with post-treatment unit: trickling filters followed by final settling tanks for municipal wastewater treatment in Ghana. Data was collected on operational conditions and physicochemical parameters of wastewater (influent and effluent) over a period of 35 weeks in 2021 (from January to August). The influent biochemical oxygen demand to chemical oxygen demand (BOD:COD) ratio was 0.58 ± 0.16, indicating the presence of highly biodegradable compounds in the sewage. Operational conditions for the UASB reactors were observed to be within the optimal range for anaerobic systems, with an applied organic loading rate of 1.30 ± 0.79 kgCOD/m3/d. Generally, Plant performance was satisfactory with carbon removal at 93% for COD and 98% for BOD. Biogas yield was 0.2 m3/kgCOD removed, culminating in an average biogas production rate of 831.6 ± 292.7 m3/d. Average methane composition was 64.7 ± 11.9% of the biogas output, whilst an estimated 35% of the methane generated remained dissolved in the UASB effluent. The UASB reactor presents an efficient technology that can be implemented in developing countries for effective and sustainable wastewater management.

Artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) is one of the essential rural non-agricultural livelihood activities in Ghana. However, basic and rudimentary practices and tools associated with ASM activities lead to vegetation and soil destruction. Given the limitation of state-sponsored reclamation of abandoned ASM sites, the role of natural recovery in abandoned mine sites is deemed a viable option, as it lowers financial obligations, promotes pioneer species and improves local ecology. The residual impacts of different ASM methods (alluvial or chamfi) and their implications for reclamation are less explored. Using a randomised sampling approach, one hundred and eight (108) plots representing 54 abandoned mined (27 alluvial and 27 chamfi) and 54 unmined areas (control plots) were demarcated for seedling and sapling assessments. A total of 6,157 seedlings belonging to 133 species and 4,536 saplings belonging to 42 species were recorded. Pielou's evenness and Shannon indices showed that both seedlings and saplings were equitably distributed between mined-out sites and their controls for both methods but showed evidence of environmental variability. This variability was more conspicuous in chamfi mined-out sites, confirming some degradation impacts. Chromolaena odorata (L.) and Mimosa pudica L. were the dominant seedlings recorded, while Hymenostegia afzelii (Oliv.) Harms and Musanga cecropioides M. Smithii R. Br. dominated the saplings. The alluvial method exerted a far greater effect on stand features such as basal area and stand density for saplings owing to its greater soil damage. Assisted restoration measures directed at abandoned mined sites can facilitate ecosystem recovery to a trajectory reminiscent of that of nearby undisturbed forests.

In this article, we provide an in-depth review of important works on phase segregation which occurs as a result of mixing organic semiconductors with polymeric additives. Throughout the discussion, the indispensable correlations among phase segregation, crystal growth, layer structure and film morphology are showcased using specific examples that mainly entail small-molecule organic semiconductors such as 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene) and 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT). The various factors that impact the phase segregation are analyzed, which include surface energy, solvent choice, additive nature, and substrate interaction. The beneficial effects of phase segregation on charge transport and operational stabilities of organic semiconductor based organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) are also assessed. We believe that the phase segregation examples discussed in this work shed light on optimizing the electrical performance of organic semiconductors and unlock favorable features useful for their application in high-performance organic electronics on flexible substrates.

The effect of biochar alone or co-applied with triple superphosphate on rhizosphere soil characteristics, nodule formation, phytoconstituents and antioxidant property of cowpea (Vigna uguiculata) is yet to be adequately examined in sub Saharan Africa. A field experiment was conducted where cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) was grown in a tropical sandy loam soil amended with biochar at 1.5 t ha−1 and 2.5 t ha−1 solely or together with inorganic phosphate fertilizer (Triple superphosphate), applied at a rate of 60 kg P ha −1. At 50% flowering, changes in selected rhizosphere soil properties (pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, soil organic carbon, cation exchange capacity), nodule count, phytochemicals (phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins) and antioxidant property of cowpea roots and leaves were determined by standard laboratory procedures. Differences between means of the measured parameters were established using ANOVA, and relationships among the parameters were explored using Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). Addition of biochar solely or in combination with TSP significantly (p < 0.05) increased soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, soil organic carbon, cation exchange capacity and root nodule count. Flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids, saponin, tannin contents and antioxidant activity in the roots and leaves were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the amended soils compared with the unamended soil. Similarly, soil flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids and antioxidant activity were significantly higher in amended soils compared with control. Significant, positive inter and intra correlation with varying strength was found between soil properties, nodule number and phytoconstituents. This is an indication that biochar can be co-applied with triple superphosphate to sustain soil fertility, improve nodulation and enhance concentrations of phytoconstituents in soil, cowpea roots and leaves.

This study investigated the effects of two mostly improvised chemical additives, calcium carbide and lambda super 2.5 EC (LSEC), on the physico–chemical and microbial characteristics of faecal sludge from toilets. The quality of faecal sludge was assessed before and after application of the chemical additives in an experimental setup of ten different treatment units including a control, and treatment replicates. The initial characteristic of the faecal sludge was slightly acidic with high content of slowly degradable organic matter. The experimental control without additives after 30 days showed reduction in BOD5, COD, helminth eggs and sludge mass by a maximum of 30%, 34.7%, 99.8% and 55% respectively. Similarly, calcium carbide additive reduced the BOD5, COD, helminth eggs and the mass of the faecal sludge by 47.4%, 48.3%, 99.6% and 61% respectively. Also, LSEC additive reduced BOD5, COD, helminth eggs and the mass of the sludge by 40.6%, 47.9%, 95.9% and 58% respectively. The two additives showed significant treatment effect on the faecal sludge although the level of treatment could not meet the regulatory discharge limits for the key quality parameters assessed including sanitisation. The study is still a grey area and more research is recommended to enrich the findings.

Research indicates an increased use of hand sanitizers globally, and in particular developing countries where bacterial epidemics such as cholera are common. While there is evidence of availability, high demand and use of hand sanitizers, the incidence of cholera in developing countries remains unabated. Several reasons have been put forward, and cost of hand sanitizers remains dominant. It is in response to this contradictory situation of availability but limited access, that this study was conducted to present an alternative option of formulating a high quality and cost effective ethanol-based sanitizer from a Ghanaian local beverage (akpeteshie). The concentration of ethanol in akpeteshie was determined using gas chromatography. An Ethanol based hand sanitizer (Sample C) was formulated with akpeteshie and tested against Vibrio cholerae using the microbial time -kill kinetics assay. Commercially available ethanol based Equi-Clean hand sanitizer (62%) (Sample D) was used as the standard. Results show that the akpeteshie contained 73.08% ethanol and formulated product (Sample C) contained 63.70% ethanol. Viscosity and pH of Sample C were; 89 rpm (1.48 cps) and 7.30 respectively whiles that of Sample D were; 80 rpm (1.33 cps) and 7.50 respectively. The formulated product (Sample C) was effective against Vibrio cholerae with a gradual reduction in microbial count upon exposure to the organisms at time intervals of 0, 5, 15, 30, 60 and 120 min.

This study adopted mixed methods design and employed questionnaire and interview to investigate climate trends and smallholder farmers' perception of climate change as well as the relationship between climate data and farmers' perception, and the determinants of perception in Adansi North District of Ghana. The study randomly and purposively selected 378 respondents and 41 key informants, respectively. Descriptive, inferential, trend and thematic analysis were employed. Results showed that the majority of smallholder farmers have observed increase in intensity (96.8%) and duration (94.7%) of temperature, and delay onset (82.8%) and early cessation (89.2%) of rainfall as well as increase in wind intensity (79.4%). Climate data also revealed rising trends of rainfall, wind speed and temperature. Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship between farmers' perception and climate data. Information from family and friends and government, particularly local institutions and extension service significantly influence farmers' perception. In addition, television and radio were significant predictors of farmers’ perception. The study recommends intensification of climate education, mass awareness and capacity development programmes.

Viral diseases are a major constraint to cucurbit production worldwide. In 2014 rainy and dry cropping seasons, cross-sectional surveys were conducted in farmers’ cucurbits fields in six agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of Côte d’Ivoire to assess prevalence and distribution of viral diseases. A total of 757 leaf samples were collected from melon, squash, cucumber, watermelon, gourd calabash, and pumpkin plants showing various virus-like symptoms. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using antisera against cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus (MWMV) were performed to detect viruses in the samples collected. Results revealed that viral diseases were prevalent in all the agro-ecological zones, with significantly higher mean prevalence in the dry season (53.6%) than in the rainy season (29.35%). The overall mean disease severity index was also significantly higher in the dry season (47.58%) than in the rainy season (28.17%). CMV, ZYMV and PRSV were found in all AEZs at varying rates between the rainy and dry seasons, whereas WMV and MWMV were not detected. CMV was more prevalent in the dry season (32%) whereas ZYMV was more prevalent in the rainy season (34%). This study has revealed that viruses infecting cucurbits are widespread and occurred in mixed infection which poses a potential threat to cucurbit crops production in Cote d’Ivoire.

Aims/introduction: We compared the diagnostic performance and correlation between salivary, serum and capillary blood glucose of diabetes and non-diabetes patients. Early detection of diabetes mellitus (DM) contributes to the prevention of complications and management. Materials and methods: This case-control study was conducted among a total of 138 participants comprising 79 newly diagnosed diabetes patients (cases) and 59 non-diabetes patients (controls). Fasting salivary glucose (FSLG), fasting serum glucose (FSEG) levels and fasting capillary whole blood glucose (FCWBG) level were assayed for each participant. Results: The mean FSLG, FSEG and FCWBG levels were significantly higher among the cases compared to controls (p < 0.0001). There was a significant mean difference between the levels of FSLG vs. FSEG (p < 0.0001) and FSLG vs. FCWBG (p < 0.0001) but not levels of FSEG vs. FCWBG (p > 0.05) in both cases and controls. A positive correlation was observed between FSLG and FSEG (r = 0.89; p < 0.0001) and FCWBG (r = 0.87; p < 0.0001). At the cut-off value >6.8 mmol/l for FSEG, a sensitivity of 99%, specificity of 100.0% and area under the curve (AUC) of 98.8% was observed for predicting DM while a sensitivity of 80%, specificity of 95% and AUC of 91.0% was observed for FSLG at a cut-off value >0.5 mmol/l. At the cut-off value >6.9 mmol/l for FCWBG, a sensitivity of 100.0%, specificity of 100.0% and AUC of 100.0% was observed for predicting DM. Conclusion: Fasting salivary glucose (FSLG) levels increased with increasing blood glucose levels. However, it does not generate enough diagnostic and predictive accuracy compared to capillary whole blood glucose which less invasive.

The outcome reveal that as the land use in the catchment areas change from mixed agricultural to cassava cultivation, the simulated loads and concentrations of nitrogen species from cassava land-use scenario recorded reduction. The resultant concentrations of nitrate and nitrite for both current and future land-use scenarios are all below the daily limit suggested by the WHO, (World Health Organization). For the phosphate concentration, an increase of 4.21% was depicted under cassava land-use scenario. The results show that SWAT is a reliable water quality model, capable of simulating accurate information for developing environmental management plans.
