Bisbibenzyls are specialized metabolites found exclusively in liverworts, until recently; they represent chemical markers of liverworts. Their occurrence in vascular plants was noticed in 2007, when they were found in Primula veris subsp. macrocalyx from Russia. This report prompted us to chemically analyze the two most common Serbian Primula species, P. veris subsp. columnae and P. acaulis, in order to determine the presence of bisbibenzyls in them. Our study revealed nine structurally distinct bisbibenzyls (1-9), identified based on 1D and 2D NMR, IR, UV and HRESIMS data. Among them were five previously undescribed compounds (2-6). The remaining compounds found and previously described in the literature were: the bisbibenzyls riccardin C (1), isoperrottetin A (7), isoplagiochin E (8) and 11-O-demethylmarchantin I (9), as well as 4-hydroxyphenylmethylketone (10) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylmethylketone (11). Riccardin C was the most dominant bisbibenzyl in both species studied. Previously, it was the first bisbibenzyl found in vascular plants (P. veris subsp. macrocalyx). An assessment of the cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against A549 lung cancer and healthy MRC5 cell lines was also the subject of our study. Estrogen is a steroid hormone that induces skeletal growth and affects endochondral ossification of the long tubular bone growth plate during the growth period. However, the effects of estrogen on endochondral ossification of the mandibular condylar cartilage are unclear. In this study, ovariectomized Wistar/ST rats were used to investigate the longitudinal effects of estrogen on mandibular growth. The rats were administered different doses of estrogen. Longitudinal micro-computed tomographic scanning, histological staining and ELISA on plasma growth hormone were performed to examine the effects of estrogen on mandibular growth. The results showed that mandibular growth was suppressed throughout the growth period by estrogen in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, long-term administration of a high dose of estrogen to the rats resulted in significant increase in growth hormone throughout the growth period, significant circularization of cell nuclei in the proliferative layer, intensely staining cartilage matrix in the subchondral bone, and significant suppression of estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and beta expression in the mandibular cartilage. However, regardless of estrogen concentration, in the posterior part of the mandibular cartilage, ER expression extended to both the hypertrophic and proliferative layers. These results indicate that estrogen suppresses mandibular growth throughout the growth period. This is the first chemical investigation of Chiastocaulon caledonicum, an endemic liverwort from New Caledonia. We herein present the isolation of thirteen compounds including seven undescribed sesquiterpenoids, namely four barbatane- and three myltaylane-type sesquiterpenes. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on the interpretation of their chemical and spectroscopic/spectrometric data. Chiastocaulins A and B are the first examples of dimers based on two myltaylane units. The chemotaxonomic importance and the biosynthesis of the chiastocaulin structure are discussed. Chemical and biocatalytic synthesis of seven previously undescribed marchantin A ester derivatives has been presented. Chemical synthesis afforded three peresterified bisbibenzyl products (TE1-TE3), while enzymatic method, using lipase, produced regioselective monoester derivatives (ME1-ME4). The antiproliferative activities of all prepared derivatives of marchantin A were tested on MRC-5 healthy human lung fibroblast, A549 human lung cancer, and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines. All tested esters were less cytotoxic in comparison to marchantin A, but they also exhibited lower cytotoxicity against healthy cells. Monoesters displayed higher cytotoxic activities than the corresponding peresterified products, presumably due to the presence of free catechol group. Monohexanoyl ester ME3 displayed the same IC 50 like marchantin A against MDA-MB-231 cells, but the selectivity was higher. In this way, regioselective enzymatic monoesterification enhanced selectivity of marchantin A. Two new tetrahydrofuran lignans, taungtangyiols A (1) and B (2), and eight known furofuran lignans (3-10), were isolated from the chloroform extract of Premna integrifolia wood collected in Myanmar. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques. The X-ray crystal structure of 1 clearly indicated its relative configuration. Taungtangyiols A (1) and B (2) inhibited the deposition of melanin in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells, with IC 50 values of 50.7 and 40.9 μM, respectively, without notable cytotoxicity. Four new labdane diterpenoids, 12β-hydroxy-15-norlabda-8(17),13(14)-dien-16-oic acid (1), (E)-15-ethoxy-15-methoxylabda-8(17),12-dien-16-al (2), (E)-15α-ethoxy-14α-hydroxylabda-8(17),12-dien-16-olide (3), and 15-ethoxy-12β-hydroxylabda-8(17),13(14)-dien-16,15-olide (4) were isolated from the methanol extract of Curcuma amada rhizomes collected in Myanmar, together with 13 known analogs. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques. All of the isolates were evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against a small panel of five different human cancer cell lines (A549, human lung cancer; HeLa, human cervical cancer; MCF7, human breast cancer; PANC-1 and PSN-1, human pancreatic cancer). Among the isolates, compounds 2-4, 7, 8, 12, and 17 showed mild antiproliferative activities with IC 50 values ranging from 19.7 to 96.1μM. (E)-14-Hydroxy-15-norlabda-8(17),12-dien-16-al (11) exhibited strong antiproliferative activities selectively against HeLa, PANC-1, and PSN-1 cells, with IC 50 values of 5.88, 1.00, and 3.98μM, respectively. Liverworts are a rich source of a diverse array of specialized metabolites, such as terpenoids and benzenoids, which are potentially useful for pharmaceutical or agrochemical applications, and also provide clues to elucidate the strategy by which liverworts adapt to the terrestrial environment. Liverworts, belonging to orders Marchantiales and Jungermanniales, possess oil bodies. In Marchantia polymorpha L., oil bodies are confined to scattered idioblastic oil body cells. It has been assumed that the specialized metabolites in M. polymorpha specifically accumulate in the oil bodies in oil body cells; however, no direct evidence was previously available for this specific accumulation. In this study, direct evidence was obtained using micromanipulation techniques coupled with MS analysis that demonstrated the specific accumulation of sesquiterpenoids and marchantin A in the oil body cells of M. polymorpha thalli. It was also observed that the number of oil body cells increased in thalli grown in low-mineral conditions. The amounts of sesquiterpenoids and marchantin A detected in crude extract prepared from the whole thallus were roughly proportional to the number of oil body cells found in a given volume of thallus, suggesting that oil body cell differentiation and sesquiterpenoid and marchantin A biosynthetic pathways are coordinated with each other., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Three new phloroglucinols, baeckenones D-F (1-3), were obtained from the leaves of Indonesian Baeckea frutescens, along with the known unusual endoperoxide, phloroglucinol (4). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR and HREIMS spectra. Furthermore, the stereochemistry of baeckenone D (1) was established by an X-ray diffraction analysis. Among the isolated compounds 1-4, baeckenone F (3) showed moderate cytotoxic activities against human pancreatic (PSN-1), lung (A549), and breast (MDA-MB-231) cancer cell lines, with IC50 values of 33.3 μM, 34 μM, and 39.3 μM, respectively., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Acute hemicerebellitis, marked by headache with or without cerebellar signs, is a rare clinical entity involving a unilateral cerebellar hemisphere. The pathogenesis of acute hemicerebellitis remains unclear, and the disease rarely occurs in adults. Here, we report an 18-year-old woman who presented with a lack of coordination of the right hand and leg lasting longer than one week, following a pulsatile headache. A neurological examination disclosed ocular dysmetria, right-sided limb ataxia and slight truncal ataxia. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed mononuclear pleocytosis. The serology and autoimmune studies were unremarkable. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a focal signal change in the right cerebellar hemisphere and vermis. Acute hemicerebellitis was diagnosed, and the patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone sodium succinate and acyclovir. Subsequently, the headache resolved, and the cerebellar signs were markedly improved. Twenty days after admission, she became asymptomatic and brain MRI showed resolution of cerebellar hyperintensity on the right side. In conclusion, we identified only 6 additional patients with adult-onset acute hemicerebellitis from previous reports, highlighting the importance of recognizing this rare clinical entity. Its clinical outcome is usually favorable, but in the acute phase, attention should be directed toward clinical symptoms that are suggestive of increased intracranial pressure., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Cryptic speciation refers to cases where species are clearly genetically differentiated, but show little or no morphological differences. This study investigated whether volatile components can be used to distinguish the cryptic species within the Conocephalum conicum complex. Thirteen samples were included in this study representing four cryptic species (A, F, J, L) and the recently described Conocephalum salebrosum (formerly cryptic species S) detected in a worldwide collection. Results received from GC-MS analyses showed some differences between samples, indicating the existence of chemical polymorphism. It is evident from both statistical analyses (CA and PCA), that cryptic species L appears to be the most differentiated species, with the volatile components not significantly shared with the rest of the types. The most characteristic compound of this type is the sesquiterpene alcohol, conocephalenol. Distinction between other examined cryptic species were also indicated. However species F and J, as well as species A and C. salebrosum, share a great similarity in their volatile composition and are grouped together in both CA and PCA. Despite their similarities, we were able to find chemical markers which can describe each species. Cubebol is characteristic for C. salebrosum, while cryptic species A produces (E)-methylcinnamate. The presence of a large amount of the monoterpene hydrocarbon, sabinene, is characteristic for cryptic species J. In one of the analyzed specimens belonging to the cryptic species F, a large amount of cyclocolorenone was detected. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of the components and surface treatments of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) posts on the durable bonding to core build-up resin evaluated using the pull-out and microtensile tests. Four types of experimental FRC posts, combinations of two types of matrix resins (polymethyl methacrylate and urethane dimethacrylate) and two types of fiberglass (E-glass and zirconia-containing glass) were examined. The FRC posts were subjected to one of three surface treatments (cleaned with ethanol, dichloromethane, or sandblasting). The bond strength between the FRC posts and core build-up resin were measured using the pull-out and microtensile tests before and after thermal cycling. The bond strengths obtained by each test before and after thermal cycling were statistically analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons test (p<0.05). The bond strengths except for UDMA by the pull-out test decreased after thermal cycling. Regardless the test method and thermal cycling, matrix resins, the surface treatment and their interaction were statistically significant, but fiberglass did not. Dichloromethane treatment was effective for the PMMA-based FRC posts by the pull-out test, but not by the microtensile test. Sandblasting was effective for both PMMA- and UDMA-based FRC posts, regardless of the test method. The bond strengths were influenced by the matrix resin of the FRC post and the surface treatment. The bryophytes contain the Marchantiophyta (liverworts), Bryophyta (mosses) and Anthocerotophyta (hornworts). Of these, the Marchantiophyta have a cellular oil body which produce a number of mono-, sesqui- and di-terpenoids, aromatic compounds like bibenzyl, bis-bibenzyls and acetogenins. Most sesqui- and di-terpenoids obtained from liverworts are enantiomers of those found in higher plants. Many of these compounds display a characteristic odor, and can have interesting biological activities. These include: allergenic contact dermatitis, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral, cytotoxic, insecticidal, insect antifeedant, superoxide anion radical release, 5-lipoxygenase, calmodulin, hyaluronidase, cyclooxygenase, DNA polymerase β, and α-glucosidase and NO production inhibitory, antioxidant, piscicidal, neurotrophic and muscle relaxing activities among others. Each liverwort biosynthesizes unique components, which are valuable for their chemotaxonomic classification. Four unusual terpenylated acylphloroglucinols were isolated from the diethyl ether extract of the scales and rhizomes of the fern Dryopteris wallichiana together with the known compounds albaspidins AA and AB, and filixic acids ABA and ABB. Structures of the isolated compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic analysis and their absolute configuration at C-14″ was determined by comparing their CD spectra with those simulated for the respective isomers. During the course of screening to discover antitrypanosomal compounds, 24 known plant terpenes (6 sesquiterpenes, 14 sesquiterpene lactones and 4 diterpenes) were evaluated for in vitro antitrypanosomal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Among them, 22 terpenes exhibited antitrypanosomal activity. In particular, α-eudesmol, hinesol, nardosinone and 4-peroxy-1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-α-santonin all exhibited selective and potent antitrypanosomal activities in vitro. Detailed here in an in vitro antitrypanosomal properties and cytotoxicities of the 24 terpenes compared with two therapeutic antitrypanosomal drugs (eflornithine and suramin). This finding represents the first report of promising trypanocidal activity of these terpenes. Adenomatoid tumors are rare benign mesothelial tumors of the genital tract, and only a few cases of uterine adenomatoid tumors treated at laparoscopic surgery have been reported. Herein is reported the case of a laparoscopically resected uterine adenomatoid tumor with coexisting endometriosis. A 34-year-old nulliparous woman with suspected uterine fibroma and endometrial cysts underwent laparoscopic surgery in which both the uterine tumor and the endometrial cysts were enucleated. Enucleation of the uterine tumor was difficult, and, therefore, the border between the tumor and normal myometrium was divided using a harmonic scalpel for tumor resection. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed irregularly proliferating smooth muscle cells and many round hiatuses lined by epithelial-like cells. These epithelial-like cells were immunohistochemically positive for mesothelin and podoplanin, and negative for CD34, which suggests that the tumor was an adenomatoid tumor. From the ether extract of Porella densifolia, the first liverwort collected and chemically investigated in Vietnam, a kaurane diterpenoid, ent-kauren-15-one (1) and two sesquiterpene norpinguisone (2) and norpinguisone methyl ester (3) have been purified. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis. In addition, an X-ray crystal structure of norpinguisone was obtained, allowing to determine its stereochemistry. Cembrane-type diterpenoids, 13,18,20-epi-iso-chandonanthone (1) and (8E)-4alpha-acetoxy-12alpha,13alpha-epoxycembra-1(15),8-diene (2), two fusicoccane-type diterpenoids, fusicoauritone 6alpha-methyl ether (3) and 6beta,10beta-epoxy-5beta-hydroxyfusicocc-2-ene (4) and a zierane sesquiterpene gamma-lactone, chandolide (5) were isolated from the Tahitian liverwort Chandonanthus hirtellus (Web.) Mitt., together with eight known diterpenoids, chandonanthine (6), fusicogigantone A (7), fusicogigantone B (8), fusicogigantepoxide (9), anadensin (10), fusicoauritone (11), ent-verticillol (12) and ent-epi-verticillol (13). Their structures were established by a combination of extensive NMR spectroscopy and/or X-ray crystallographic analyses. Compounds 1, 5 and 10 showed weak cytotoxic activity against HL-60. Chemical investigations of aerial parts of Tephrosia purpurea yielded the rare prenylated flavonoids, tephropurpulin A (1) and isoglabratephrin (2), in addition to a previously identified flavonoid, glabratephrin (3). Structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, as well as by HR-MS analysis; for compounds 2 and 3, structures were confirmed by X-ray analysis.

We examined the suppression methodology of the interaction between phosphate compounds, such as nucleotides, and the stainless steel surfaces of high-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-MS) equipment in an effort to prevent the tailing of peaks seen in HPLC chromatograms of phosphate compounds. Addition of carbonate (CO(3)(2-)) to mobile phase was highly effective in suppressing the interaction of phosphate compounds derived from a complexation between phosphate groups and metal ions that exist on a stainless steel surface in a mechanism similar to Fe(III)- and Cr(III)-immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC). Addition of ammonium hydrogen carbonate to mobile phase achieved a simple and reliable HPLC/ESI-MS analysis of mono-, di-, and triphosphate compounds (six nucleotides) without peak tailing due to the interaction between stainless steel surfaces and phosphate groups. Moreover, ammonium hydrogen carbonate buffer, a volatile buffer with good buffering capacity at neutral pH, does not compromise the stability of silica-based HPLC columns, decreases in sensitivity, ion source pollution, clogging of the ESI interface, and/or ion suppression in HPLC/ESI-MS.

Eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids 3alpha-(2,3-epoxy-2-methylbutyryloxy)-4alpha-formoxy-11-hydroxy-6,7-dehydroeudesman-8-one (1) and 3alpha-(2,3-epoxy-2-methylbutyryloxy)-4alpha,7alpha,11-trihydroxyeudesman-8-one (2), together with 10 known structurally related eudesmanes were isolated from the CHCl3 extract of aerial parts of Pluchea sagittalis (Lamarck) Cabrera. Their structures were deduced by extensive application of 1 and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and high and low resolution CIMS. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the known compound 3alpha-(2,3-epoxy-2-methylbutyryloxy)-4alpha-formoxycuauthemone (9) is reported here for the first time, and confirms the structural features for the series of the reported eudesmanes. All eudesmanes were tested for their antifeedant activity by incorporating them to an artificial diet of larvae of the polyphagous insect Spodoptera frugiperda at a concentration of 100ppm. Our results, from feeding choice tests, indicated that most of the compounds deter larval feeding at the cited concentration.

Three macrocyclic diarylheptanoids, 6'-hydroxygaruganin V (1), 9'-desmethylgarugamblin I (2) and 1,9'-didesmethylgaruganin III (3) were isolated from the petroleum ether and dichloromethane extracts of the stem bark of Garuga pinnata. The structures of these compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic studies, including high field NMR and MS measurements.

Five cyclomyltaylanoids (2-6), together with 1R,5R-diacetoxycyclomyltaylan-10-one (1), (+)-globulol, and ent-4beta,10alpha-dihydroxyaromadendrane have been isolated from the diethyl ether fraction of the Malagasy liverwort, Bazzania madagassa. The structure of 1 was confirmed by X-ray analysis, while those of the compounds were established on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic evidence, and comparison with data reported in the literature. The chemosystematics of B. madagassa are discussed.

Salvidorol (1), a irregular nor-abietane-type diterpene, was isolated from the aerial parts of Salvia dorrii, in addition to two epimeric abietane diterpenes (2 and 3). This is the first report of a nor-diterpene with an irregular skeleton. The structures were established by high-field NMR techniques ((1)H-(1)H COSY, DEPT, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY and HRMS) and in case of 2 was confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Investigation of the methanolic extract of the inedible mushroom Fomitopsis spraguei (Polyporaceae) led to the isolation of five lanostane-type triterpenoids (1-5): three new compounds named fomitopsins A-C (2-4), and two known compounds, quercinic acid C (1) and 3alpha-carboxyacetyl-12beta-hydroxyquercinic acid (5). Their structures were determined by 2D NMR, MS, IR, UV spectra, and X-ray crystallographic analyses. An X-ray crystal structure analysis of quercinic acid C (1) established its stereochemistry as 3R,12R-dihydroxy-24R-methyl-23-oxo-25S-lanost-8-en-26-oic acid.

Three ent-verticillane diterpenoids and two ent-sesquiterpenoids were isolated from the Japanese liverwort Jackiella javanica Schiffn. together with five known ent-verticillane and three ent-kaurane diterpenoids, and three sesquiterpenoids. Five ent-verticillane epoxides were synthetically prepared from ent-verticillols action to clarify the absolute configuration of natural ent-9,10-epoxyverticillol. Their structures were established by extensive NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses.

Seven p-terphenyl derivatives named terrestrins A-G together with three known ganbajunin B, thelephantins F and H, were isolated from the methanol extract of fruiting bodies of the Japanese inedible mushroom Thelephora terrestris (Thelephoraceae). Their structures were elucidated by means of high-resolution MS, 2D NMR, IR and UV spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Azaphilones, named cohaerins A and B were isolated from stromata of the xylariaceous ascomycete Hypoxylon cohaerens. Their absolute structures were determined by spectroscopic methods (2D NMR, MS, IR, UV CD), and subsequently confirmed by acetylation. Stromatal metabolite profiles of several taxa of Hypoxylon sect. Annulata were also generated using analytical HPLC with diode array and MS detection. The cohaerins were neither found in other Hypoxylon spp., nor in other Xylariaceae. However, they were present even in holotype material of H. cohaerens, collected over 200 years ago. The binaphthalene BNT was also omnipresent in sect Annulata, and its derivatives, the benzo[j]fluoranthenes daldinone A and truncatone, as well as presumably related compounds. These fungi were found devoid of other types of azaphilone pigments of the Xylariaceae, such as mitorubrins and daldinins, the latter of which are widespread in certain groups of Hypoxylon sect. Hypoxylon. Hence, chemotaxonomic data largely support the current generic concept. The original source of truncatone was identified as Hypoxylon annulatum.

Analysis of the essential oil of the liverwort Radula perrottetii afforded two novel viscidane diterpenes, viscida-3,9,14-triene (1), viscida-3,11(18),14-triene (2), four bisabolane sesquiterpenes, bisabola-2,6,11-triene (3), bisabola-1,3,5,7(14),11-pentaene (4), bisabola-1,3,5,7,11-pentaene (5), 6,7-epoxybisabola-2,11-diene (6), and 1-methoxy-4-(2-methylpropenyl)benzene (7) as new natural products. In addition, the known compounds bisabola-1,3,5,7(14),10-pentaene (8), ar-tenuifolene (9), alpha-helmiscapene (10), and beta-helmiscapene (11) were also isolated. Isolation was carried out by preparative gas chromatography, and the structures were established by extensive NMR analysis. This is the first finding of viscidane diterpenes in liverworts. Compounds 8, 9 and the rarely encountered eudesmane sesquiterpene hydrocarbons 10 and 11 are reported for the first time from R. perrottetii.

Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of the fruiting bodies of the inedible mushroom Hydnellum caeruleum resulted in the isolation of six p-terphenyl derivatives named thelephantins I-N (1-6), together with a known compound, dihydroaurantiacin dibenzoate (7). These structures were determined by high-resolution MS, 2D NMR, IR and UV spectroscopic analysis, and by the chemical reactions.

Most liverworts (Hepaticae) contain oil bodies which are composed of lipophilic terpenoids and aromatic compounds. The chemosystematics of 36 families of the Jungermannidae and seven families of the Marchantiidae of the Hepaticae are discussed using terpenoid and aromatic components.

Phytochemical examination of the methanolic extract of fruit bodies of the Xylariaceous ascomycete fungus Hypoxylon fuscum led to the isolation of two azaphilone derivatives named daldinins E and F together with two known compounds daldinin C and 4,5,4',5'-tetrahydroxy-1:1'-binaphthyl using a combination of reversed phase HPLC and high performance gel permeation chromatography. Their structures were determined by 2D NMR, MS, IR, UV, and CD spectroscopy. Their antioxidative activities were also estimated by an indication of a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging effect. The chemosystematics of Hypoxylon is discussed.

Two ent-isopimarane-type diterpenoids were isolated from the New Zealand liverwort Trichocolea mollissima (Hook. f. and Tayl.) Gott., together with a known 1alpha-hydroxy-ent-sandaracopimara-8(14),15-diene. Their absolute structures have been established by modified Mosher's method, X-ray crystallography and by analyses of their CD spectra.

Four p-terphenyl derivatives named curtisians E-H (1-4) were isolated from the methanolic extract of fruit bodies of the Basidiomycete Paxillus curtisii by a combination of Sephadex LH-20, silica gel column chromatography and preparative reversed phase HPLC. The relative stereochemistries of the curtisians were elucidated by 2D NMR, MS, IR and UV spectroscopy with the absolute configurations at C(3a-3d) of the side chains being established as S by GC-MS on a chiral column previously used for separation of authentic standards.

Five p-terphenyl derivatives named thelephantins D-H (1-5) together with nine known compounds, thelephantins A-C (6-8), ganbajunin E (9), p-hydroxylbenzoic acid (10), ganbajunin C (11), thelephorin A (12), 2-O-methylatromentin (13) and atromentin (14), were isolated from the methanolic extract of fruit bodies of the Thelephoraceous Basidiomycete Thelephora aurantiotincta. Their structures were elucidated by high-resolution MS, 2D NMR, IR and UV spectroscopic analysis.

The hydrodistillation products of the liverwort Bazzania japonica were separated by preparative gas chromatography (GC) and investigated by spectroscopic methods. Seven unknown compounds were isolated and identified by GC-MS and NMR. Four of them, the norsesquiterpene hydrocarbons 4-epi-11-nor-aristola-1(10),11-diene (1), 4-epi-11-nor-aristola-1,9,11-triene (2), 4-epi-11-nor-aristola-9,11-diene (3), and one oxygenated sesquiterpene, (-)-aristol-1(10)-en-12-ol (5) are new natural compounds, and one, (+)-himachala-2,4-diene (7), has for the first time been isolated from liverworts. The absolute configurations of 5 and 7 were derived by chemical correlation reactions and/or enantioselective GC using cyclodextrin phases. 1, 2 and 3 have identical absolute configuration.

The volatile components of 25 taxa of the liverwort family Frullaniaceae from New Zealand, Australia and South America have been analyzed by GC-MS. The present Frullania species are chemically divided into five major types: (1) sesquiterpene lactones, (2) sesquiterpene lactones-bibenzyls, (3) bibenzyls, (4) 2-alkanone and (5) triterpene types; the latter two chemo-types are newly proposed for the genus. Schusterella chevalierii, belonging to the Frullaniaceae, is closely related chemically to the sesquiterpene lactone type of the Frullania species since it elaborates two eudesmanolides, beta-cyclocostunolide and dihydro-beta-cyclocostunolide as major components.

Three benzoyl p-terphenyl derivatives named thelephantins A, B and C were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of fruit bodies of the Thelephoraceous Basidiomycete Thelephora aurantiotincta. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of high-resolution 2D NMR, MS, IR and UV spectra.

Three squalene-type triterpenoids named concentricols B, C and D (1-3) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of fruiting bodies of the xylariaceous ascomycete Daldinia concentrica. Their absolute structures were elucidated by analysis of 2D NMR, MS, IR and UV spectra, and the modified Mosher's method.

A new monocyclic triterpene ester (1) was isolated from the rhizomes of Iris germanica from Turkey. Structure elucidation of compound (1) was carried out by the combined application of HMQC, HMBC, DEPT, COSY and NOESY experiments and named as iristectorone K.

Four iridoid glucosides, three of which are dimeric were isolated from the methanol extract of roots of Vietnamese Paederia scandens (Lour) Merrill together with the five known glucosides, paederoside, asperuloside, paederosidic acid, asperulosidic acid and geniposide. Seven sulfur-containing iridoid glucosides were also isolated. The structures of the iridoid glucosides were determined by a combination of high-resolution NMR, MS, IR and UV spectra, and chemical reaction such as acetylation.

Three neogrifolin derivatives, 3-hydroxyneogrifolin, 1-formylneogrifolin and 1-formyl-3-hydroxyneogrifolin along with grifolin and neogrifolin were isolated from the Japanese mushroom Albatrellus ovinus belonging to Scutigeraceae. Their structures were established by a combination of two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic analyses and by chemical synthesis. 3-Hydroxyneogrifolin and 1-formyl-3-hydroxy-neogrifolin showed more potent antioxidative activity properties than either alpha-tocopherol or BHA.

Two eremophilanolides, 5-epidilatanolides A and B, as well as a new natural bibenzyl were isolated from an Argentine collection of the liverwort Frullania brasiliensis, along with the known eudesmane-type sesquiterpene lactones nepalensolide A, nepalensolide B, (+)-frullanolide, and (+)-dihydrofrullanolide, the hopanoid zeorin, the four sterols stigmasta-4,22-dien-3,6-dione, stigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one, stigmasterol, and sitosterol, and a trace amount of atraric acid. The structure and stereochemistry of the eremophilanolides and the bibenzyl were established by a combination of extensive NMR spectroscopy experiments and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Absolute configurations of the new compounds were derived on the basis of CD spectra.

The extra domain A containing fibronectin (EDA(+)FN) concentration in plasma of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is abnormally higher than the normal level. We synthesized various gellan-sulfate (GS) candidates as artificial ligands for removing EDA(+)FN from plasma. The interaction between these artificial ligands and EDA(+)FN was evaluated using affinity constants (KA), which were determined by surface plasmon resonance measurement. The KA (3.6 x 10(8) per M) of GS-25 [degree of substitution for sulfonation (DS) = 25%] with EDA(+)FN was higher than those of other molecules: GS-16 (DS=16%) at 8.3 x 10(7) per M, and GS-35 (DS = 35%) at 1.7 x 10(8) per M. Furthermore, GSs displayed selectivity of EDA(+)FN for binding with plasma FN (KAEDA(+)FN)/KA(plasma FN)>2). The removal ratio in plasma was measured by using GS-immobilized gel. Removals of 66, 11, 7.7, 6.2, 6.9, and 12% for EDA(+)FN, plasma FN, fibrinogen, albumin, immunoglobulin G (IgG) and antithrombin III from the patient-model plasma were, respectively, achieved with GS-25-immobilized gel. These results suggest that GS may be used as a selective artificial ligand for EDA(+)FN removal from plasma in RA treatment.

The hydrocarbon fraction of the liverwort Trocholejeunea sandvicensis was investigated. Four new sesquiterpene hydrocarbons including the trifaranes (-)-trifara-9,14-diene (6) and (-)-3,7-di-epi-3,7-trifara-9,14-diene (7), as well as (+)-sandvicene (8), a sesquiterpene with uncommon skeleton, and the rearranged trifarane sesquiterpene (+)-neotrifaradiene (9) were isolated and their structure elucidated. A biogenetic pathway for the four compounds is proposed, with nerolidol as their common precursor.

A 2,3-seco-cuparane-type sesquiterpenoid and the previously known barbatane-type sesqui- and ent-kaurane-type diterpenoids were isolated from the Japanese liverwort Jungermannia infusca (Mitt.) Steph. The structure of the 2,3-seco-cuparane-type sesquiterpenoid was determined by NMR spectroscopic analyses.

Bryophytes contain a large number of terpenoids and phenolic compounds. Recent topics relating to the chemical constituents found in 36 Japanese, 3 New Zealand, 2 European, 1 Argentinean and 1 Taiwanese liverworts and 2 Japanese mosses and their biological activity are discussed. The chemosystematics of some liverworts as well as the chemical relationship between liverworts and mosses, and bryophytes and ferns are also discussed.

A new peroxy muurolane-type sesquiterpenoid was isolated from the ether extract of the Belgium liverwort Scapania undulata, together with three known ent-muurolanes. A new lepidozane-type sesquiterpenoid was isolated from the Japanese Porella subobtusa together with a known santalane- and two africane-type sesquiterpenoids. All structures were determined by means of NMR spectroscopic techniques. The chemosystematics of each species are discussed.

The isolation of 1(10)-halimadien-13xi-ol (1), a new diterpenoid from Jungermannia infusca, is reported.
