Background: Brain abscesses caused by sinonasal infections have become more common during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly due to the increase in sinonasal mucormycosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic endonasal brain abscess drainage as a therapeutic technique for these cases., Methods: Clinical outcomes and retrospective evaluations were performed in patients who underwent endoscopic endonasal brain abscess drainage between May 2019 and August 2022. A total of 7 patients diagnosed with 9 brain abscesses caused by sinonasal infections were included in the study. The main outcome of this study was to evaluate the success and safety of this technique., Results: The average age of the patients was 40.71 ± 14.17 years. The most common symptom observed in these patients was nasal discharge, and the frontal lobe was the most common site of abscess. Notably, the majority of cases were associated with COVID-19., Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, endoscopic endonasal brain abscess drainage is considered a viable treatment option for skull base brain abscesses caused by sinonasal infections. Brain gliomas are major neurosurgical challenges due to high mortality and morbidity. Hence, development of novel biomarkers is of great value to plan appropriate treatment strategy. Evaluation of the molecular content of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as novel non-invasive biomarker repertoires can provide a real-time portrait of disease status. This study aims to provide a systematic, comprehensive and critical report of the diagnostic and prognostic significance of EV biomarkers (proteins, DNAs and RNAs) for brain gliomas, discuss their biogenesis and passage through the blood brain barrier, and also highlight the high throughput methods used for EV biomarker discovery; as well as discussing potential limitations of EV isolation and characterization methods as glioma diagnostic, prognostic or treatment response biomarkers. Moreover, we critically appraise the bias risk in the previous studies, discuss the limitations EV biomarker discovery faces to enter neurosurgical practice in the future, and highlight the need for more optimized protocols for EV isolation and biomarker discovery in high throughput studies. Objective: Coping with childhood cancer, as a stressful incident, can lead to a growth in various aspects of the child's life. Therefore, this study aims to validate Posttraumatic Growth Inventory for Children-Revised (PTGI-C-R) in children with cancer., Methods: This methodological research was carried out in referral children hospitals in Tehran. PTGI-C-R was translated and back-translated. Content and face validity were assessed. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed on 200 children with inclusion criteria, using LISREL V8.5. Due to the rejection of the model, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was done, using SPSS V21. The correlation of posttraumatic growth (PTG) with the variables, i.e., age and gender, was investigated., Results: Some writing changes were made in phrases in the sections concerning face and content validity. CFA rejected the five-factor model due to the undesirable fit indices. Therefore, an EFA was used and the three-factor model was not approved, either despite the statistical appropriateness or due to the lack of similarity between the items loaded on factors. The results also indicated a significant relationship between PTG and age ( r = 0.13, P = 0.05). There is no significant relationship between PTG and gender ( z = -1.35, P = 0.83)., Conclusions: PTGI-C-R does not have desirable psychometric properties in Iranian children with cancer and may not be able to reflect all the aspects of PTG experienced by them. The demands for high-performance biomaterials are driving the development of new metallic alloys with improved mechanical and biological responses. In this study, a nanocrystalline Ti-Cu intermetallic alloy was prepared by a powder metallurgy route, and its application as an orthopedic material was evaluated by the microstructural, mechanical, corrosion, antibacterial, cytotoxicity and osseointegration examinations. Microstructural characterization revealed the formation of TiCu and Ti 2 Cu 3 as major phases with 23 nm grain size in the structure of the alloy. The synthesized alloy exhibited ultra-high hardness of 10 GPa, acceptable toughness of 8.14 MPam 1/2 , a ∼98 % anti-bacterial rate against S. aureus and E. coli, excellent cell viability to MG-63 osteosarcoma cells, and high osteoblast formation rate, which indicate a great potential of this alloy for biomedical application., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, ultra-small CuO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized through a mechanochemical method using two different Cu-containing precursors (i.e. CuSO 4 ·5H 2 O and CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O), and their structure and antibacterial activity were studied. From the microstructural studies, it was observed that CuO NPs have a spherical morphology and a narrow size distribution with 7 and 14 nm median particle sizes for CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O and CuSO 4 .5H2O precursors, respectively. The CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O derived nanoparticles showed more antibacterial activity than CuSO 4 .5H 2 O derived nanoparticles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the synthesized nanoparticles (derived from both precursors) against E. coli and S.aureus were 3.75 and 2.50 mg/ml, respectively, which are higher than those reported in the literature for CuO NPs synthesized by other methods. This difference may be originated from ultra-small size of the synthesized nanoparticles, high bandgap energy and Fe inclusion entering from milling media and their effect on oxidative stress-mediated cytotoxicity of CuO NPs. The higher MIC value reported in this work indicates that the synthesized NPs not only show good antibacterial activity, but also they yield lower cytotoxicity, which extends their applications in the biomedical field., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has been associated with poor outcomes after solid organ transplantation. The long-term impact of donor and recipient CMV serological status on lung transplant outcomes remains unclear. Accordingly, we evaluated the impact of donor and recipient CMV status on long-term patients as well as allograft survival after single (SLT) and double lung transplantation (BLT)., Methods: The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients was used to track all adult lung transplants in United States from May 2005 to June 2016. Patient mortality and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome were determined up to 5 years using Cox proportional hazards modeling. Additionally, landmark analysis was performed conditional on survival at 1 year., Results: Compared with donor negative-recipient CMV-IgG negative (D-R-), donor positive-recipient negative (D+R-) and donor positive-recipient positive (D+R+) groups had increased mortality at 1 and 5 years after BLT, with the former demonstrating highest risk. Although mortality was not increased with CMV seropositive donors after SLT at 1 year, both D+R- and D+R+ groups demonstrated greater mortality at 5 years. Risk of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome was not affected by CMV serological status. Conditional landmark analysis confirmed that lungs from CMV seropositive donors conferred highest risk for long-term mortality., Conclusions: CMV seronegative recipients undergoing either BLT or SLT from CMV seropositive donors have the highest risk of long-term mortality that extends beyond the first year. Further studies are needed to determine the causes of higher mortality observed in the CMV seronegative recipients and risks and benefits of extension of CMV prophylaxis, particularly in the high-risk group., (Copyright © 2019 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Background: OSA is associated with increased cancer incidence and mortality. Exosomes are vesicles secreted by most cells. They are released into the bloodstream and play a role in tumor progression and metastasis. We evaluated whether the chronic intermittent hypoxia (IH) that characterizes OSA leads to release of tumor-promoting exosomes in the circulation., Methods: C57/B6 male mice were randomized to 6 weeks of IH or room air (RA). A subgroup was injected with TC1 lung carcinoma cells in the left flank after 2 weeks of IH. Exosomes from mouse plasma and from 10 adult human patients with OSA before and after treatment for 6 weeks were cocultured with mouse TC1 and human adenocarcinoma cells lines. Malignant tumor properties such as proliferation, migration, invasion, and endothelial monolayer disruption were assessed, as was micro-RNA (miRNA), exosomal content, and transcriptomic effects of exosomes on TC1 cells in vitro to identify target genes., Results: Application of IH-induced exosomes from either IH-exposed tumor-bearing (IH+) or non-tumor-bearing (IH-) mice significantly promoted TC1 malignant properties. Similarly, before adherent treatment, exosomes from patients with OSA significantly enhanced proliferation and migration of human adenocarcinoma cells compared with after adherent treatment. Eleven distinct miRNAs emerged in IH-exposed mice, and their gene targets in TC1 cells were identified., Conclusions: Circulating exosomes released under IH conditions in vivo selectively enhance specific properties of lung tumor cell cultures. The use of lentiviral vectors (LV)s for in vivo gene therapy is an ideal platform for treating many types of disease. Since LVs can transduce a wide array of cells, support long-term gene expression, and be modified to enhance cell targeting, LVs are a powerful modality to deliver life-long therapeutic proteins. A major limitation facing the use of LVs for in vivo gene therapy is the induction of immune responses, which can reduce the transduction efficiency of LV, eliminate the transduced cells, and inhibit the effect of the therapeutic protein. LV strategies designed to restrict transgene expression to the liver to exploit its naturally tolerogenic properties have proven to significantly reduce the induction of pathogenic immune responses and increase therapeutic efficacy. In this review, we outline the immunological hurdles facing in vivo LV gene therapy and highlight the advantages and limitations of using liver-directed LV gene therapy., (Copyright © 2013 Mosby, Inc.
