Introduction: Arterial lactate, mixed venous O2 saturation, venous minus arterial CO2 partial pressure (Pv-aCO2) and the ratio between this gradient and the arterial minus venous oxygen content (Pv-aCO2/Ca-vO2) were proposed as markers of tissue hypoperfusion and oxygenation. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) facilitates arsenic (As) mobilization, posing a significant environmental risk. Soil viruses potentially participate in the microbial AOM process, yet their roles in methane-mediated As mobilization of paddy soil remain elusive. Here, an anaerobic microcosm study was conducted by inoculating microbial suspension with extracellular free virus and mitomycin C (MC)-induced virus, along with 13 CH 4 injection. The results showed that extracellular free virus enhanced while MC-induced virus suppressed 13 CH 4 -mediated As mobilization. During the AOM process, both viruses inhibited 13 CH 4 oxidation to 13 CO 2 . However, the extracellular free virus suppressed whereas the MC-induced virus enhanced 13 CH 4 consumption, likely attributed to the viral influence on the ANME-2d abundance. The methane consumption differences were inferred to influence As reduction, as evidenced by a strong correlation between As(III) and 13 CH 4 consumption concentrations. Moreover, virus-mediated methane assimilation into microbial biomass carbon influenced the overall microbial population. An increased abundance of Geobacter in the extracellular free virus treatment elevated net As(III) concentrations (up to 260 %) relative to treatment without virus in the presence of 13 CH 4 . In contrast, MC-induced virus led to a net 122 % reduction in As(III) concentration due to decreased Geobacter abundance. Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and waste-activated sludge (WAS) is increasingly recognized as a viable solution for managing organic wastes. However, emerging contaminants (ECs), such as surfactant like sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), can severely inhibit methane production. This study explores the potential of C6-HSL, a quorum sensing (QS) signaling molecule, to mitigate inhibitory effects of SDBS during FW and WAS co-digestion. Results demonstrated that SDBS reduced methane yields from 122.2 mL/g VSS in the control to 18.5 mL/g VSS, but supplementation with C6-HSL alleviated this inhibition, increasing yields to 115.4 mL/g VSS. C6-HSL not only restored suppressed methanogen populations but also promoted bacteria-archaea mutualisms, enhancing system resilience and stability. Additionally, C6-HSL enhanced key electron bifurcation pathways critical for overcoming thermodynamic barriers in methane metabolism, increasing the relative abundance of functional genes involved in four methane metabolism modules. Moreover, C6-HSL enhanced QS system (e.g., SecY and trpE), prompting microorganisms to activate adaptive mechanisms, such as DNA replication (e.g., rfcL and rfcS), efflux pumps (e.g., mdlA and mdlB), and bacterial chemotaxis (e.g., cheB and cheD), to counter SDBS toxicity. Aspartame (ASP) is a widely used artificial sweetener, yet recent studies have shown that ASP have potential toxic effect. ASP is also detected in sludge, however, the influence of ASP on the performance of sludge anaerobic digestion and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have not been thoroughly investigated. Under stress of 0, 0.5, 5 and 50 mg/L ASP, cumulative methane production was 181.7, 167.0, 154.0 and 140.8 mlCH 4 /g VSS, respectively. ASP inhibited the dissolution and conversion of organic matter in sludge. Sequencing data revealed a decline in the abundance of functional microorganisms compared to control, such as hydrolytic-acidifying bacteria and methanogens, potentially attributed to increased intracellular reactive oxygen species and damaged cell membranes caused by ASP addition. Specifically, 50 mg/L ASP reduced the total abundance of methanogens by 59.40 % compared to control. Concurrently, alterations in microbial communities along with an increase in Tn916 and intI1 were observed, increasing the abundance of ARGs. The total abundance of five ARGs peaked at 1.43E+ 12 copies/g at 5 mg/L ASP, representing 139 % of the control. Pollutants often exhibit different environmental behaviors at varying redox potentials, and the fate and microbial response of 6-OH-BDE-47 and 6-MeO-BDE-47 under these conditions remain unclear. Herein, 14 C-labeled 6-OH-BDE-47 and 6-MeO-BDE-47 were used to investigate their fate in water-sediment systems at different redox potentials. For 6-OH-BDE-47, aerobic microorganisms and nitrate electron acceptors promoted nonextractable residues (NERs) formation and anaerobic microorganisms facilitated their release and was highest formed in the O 2 -containing group. For 6-MeO-BDE-47, aerobic microorganisms, electron acceptors, and anaerobic microorganisms promoted NER formation, and was highest formed in the nitrate group. Microorganisms markedly promoted 6-OH/MeO-BDE-47 transformation. For 6-OH-BDE-47, the degradation followed the order nitrate group (29.6 %) > O 2 -containing group (6.5 %) > sulfate group (1.45 %) > anaerobic group (0 %), while for 6-MeO-BDE-47, the order was O 2 -containing group (8.8 %) > nitrate group = sulfate group = anaerobic group (0 %). The complexity of the 6-OH-BDE-47 and 6-MeO-BDE-47 microbial community network was consistent with the results of redox potentials, where microbial networks connectivity linking were more complex under O 2 -containing and nitrate conditions. Overall, our study comprehensively revealed the fate of 6-OH-BDE-47 and 6-MeO-BDE-47 under different redox conditions, showing that electron acceptors can alter microbial community structure and regulating interactions. This study addresses the challenge of obtaining in situ information on substrate utilization rates for individual microbial species in complex microbial communities such as anaerobic digester sludge. To overcome this hurdle, a novel approach combining doubly-labelled deuterium, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Raman microspectroscopy was developed. The method enables quantitative determination of anabolic heavy hydrogen incorporation into FISH-targeted, exemplified by methanogenic cells from the genera Methanosarcina and Methanothermobacter. The deuterium incorporation rates ascertained by Raman red-shifting of C-Hx vibrational region to C-Dx vibrations, quantified through Raman peak area ratios, were compared for different carbon sources. Methanosarcina exhibited highest kinetic rates with acetate and propionate, while Methanothermobacter demonstrated faster incorporation under acetate and methanol supplementation. N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) is an antioxidant commonly used in tire manufacturing, and its release into the environment has significantly increased due to rapid urbanization. When subjected to ozonation, 6PPD converts into the harmful pollutant 6PPD quinone (6PPDQ). These substances enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) via stormwater runoff and pipelines, posing significant risks to the functional microorganisms. Anammox, a strictly controlled and sensitive microbial nitrogen removal process, is especially susceptible to the effects of the pollutants. This study investigates the comprehensive impact of 6PPD-Q and 6PPD on anammox communities based on characterization analysis and metagenomics. At environmental concentrations, 6PPD-Q at 200 ng/L-1000 ng/L led to the disintegration of anammox granules. Extended exposure to both 6PPD-Q and 6PPD significantly reduces the population of anammox bacteria (AnAOB). By utilizing organic matter from dead cells and incoming carbonate as a carbon source, the system evolved into a nitrogen metabolism network primarily focused on denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This transformation was accompanied by a reshuffling of the microbial community and associated genes, resulting in an accumulation of NH 4 + -N. The scarcity of seed sludge poses a significant barrier to the advancement of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process. In this investigation, two alternative sludge (anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) and activated flocculent sludge (AFS)) were employed to start up the anammox process in internal circulation (IC) reactors with the hydroxyapatite (HAP) strategy. Both reactors achieved rapid start-up on days 83 and 53, respectively. Subsequently, a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 1.34 gN/L/d was attained at a nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 1.39 gN/L/d on days 107 and 81 correspondingly. The analysis of granular properties revealed that the anammox granular sludge (AMXGS) transformed from AGS exhibited superior granular size distribution and settling performance. Furthermore, the assessment of microbial community structure demonstrated that inoculating AFS was capable of enriching anammox bacteria (AnAOB) in a shorter time. Last but most importantly, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the distinct granulation routes of AGS and AFS. AGS predominantly underwent a "broken-adsorption-granulation" process, whereas AFS exhibited not only a typical "adsorption-granulation" process but also a "biofilm growth-granulation" cycle process. The conversion of organic matter to methane through anaerobic digestion (AD) process can be enhanced by different materials. However, literature reports show inconsistent results on the effect of materials in different AD systems. In this study, we evaluated the influence of the inoculum's activity on methane production (MP) efficiency in the presence of different materials (activated carbon (AC), magnetite (Mag), and zeolite (Zeo)). The inocula included pure cultures of methanogens, syntrophic cocultures, and complex microbial communities, and the kinetic parameters assessed were the lag phase duration and methane production rates (MPR). The results showed that the microbial activity of the inocula is an important factor determining materials' effect on MP kinetics. AC, Mag, and Zeo significantly enhanced the MP profiles of less active microbial communities or low-active microorganisms by decreasing lag phases duration up to 85 %, consequently increasing MPR up to 15 times. Contrarily, these materials did not affect highly active microbial communities or pure cultures, as MP profiles tend to be similar with and without materials. Chloroquine phosphate (CQ) poses strong biotoxicity on anammox process, and thus detoxifying is essential for the stable operation of anammox in treating CQ-bearing wastewater. Biochar has been proven to simultaneously detoxify pollutant and modulate nitrogen cycle in anammox by its shelter effect and electron exchange capacity (EEC) ability. To further improve the ability of biochar to promote the nitrogen metabolism of anammox, a KOH modification strategy was used to tailor a high-EEC biochar in this work. KOH modified biochar can bind CQ for detoxification driven by hydrogen bond, π-π interaction, and electrostatic interaction. Meanwhile, the EEC of modified biochar increased by 70 % than that of pristine biochar, thus improving nitrogen removal efficiency by 55.6 % and 9.5 % than CQ and BC group, respectively. Besides, the microorganism regulated by modified biochar produced more α-helix configuration, improving EPS barrier ability to CQ and sludge granulation. Lastly, metagenomic analysis revealed that modified biochar can stimulate the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, increased the relative abundance of CODH from 0.74 % in CQ to 1.00 % in modified BC group. It favored the proliferation of autotrophic microorganisms, especially increased the relative abundance of anammox bacteria by 86.8 % than CQ group. Sludge anaerobic fermentation is a pivotal route to transit wastewater treatment plants towards energy-neutral and resource recovery-oriented plants, while the overall efficiency is commonly restrained by co-exist contaminants. This study unveiled the cooperative effect of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) in driving volatile fatty acids (VFAs) biosynthesis during waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation. The VFAs remarkably elevated to 1189 mg COD/L in LAS/SDZ, which was approximately 1.3-3.2 folds of SDZ and LAS. SDZ and LAS synergistically disintegrated extracellular polymeric substances to provide fermentation substrates. These changes altered microbial population and enhanced microbial networks interconnection. Moreover, the proteins released from WAS might facilitate electron transfer among microorganisms. The functional anaerobic species, including hydrolytic-acidogenic bacteria (e.g., Veillonellaceae and Lactobacillus) and electroactive bacteria (e.g., Parabacteroides and Fonticella), were enriched. Also, the metabolic traits responsible for transmembrane transport, intracellular metabolism, VFAs biosynthesis and electron transfer-related process were strengthened with the upregulation of functional genes. Further analysis revealed that the functional anaerobic species activated quorum sensing and two-component systems to counteract unfavorable LAS/SDZ stress and maintain high metabolic activities. Artificial sweeteners (ASs) were frequently detectable in wastewater, which pose high risks to human health and ecological security. The feasibility of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process for treatment of ASs-containing wastewater was evaluated in this study. The 86-d continuous flow experiment results showed that 0-30 μg L -1 cyclamate and acesulfame did not significantly affect the nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of anammox processes, which were 94.5 ± 3.0 % and 96.6 ± 2.5 %, respectively. Simultaneously, specific anammox activity (SAA) was inhibited by 15 μg L -1 ASs. Fortunately, anammox consortia adapted to the ASs stress by secreting extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). The relative abundances of Candidatus Kuenenia slightly decreased by 0.2 % and 2.3 % under stress of two ASs, and the microbial diversity increased. In addition, the anammox consortia regulated metabolites expression by cell energy allocation. The dominant metabolic pathways were amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism and nucleotide metabolism. Particularly, the abundances of 5-hydroxylysinonorleucine and L-hypoglycin A significantly increased with ASs concentrations, which were crucial for bacterial proliferation. The co-metabolism between different bacteria might contribute to the biodegradation of ASs. Anaerobic co-digestion is emerging as an option for wastewater biosolids management. Variations in treatment parameters can impact odour emissions and, in turn, odour nuisance reduces community acceptance and alternatives for beneficial reuse of biosolids via land application. This study assessed odour emissions from digested sludge and biosolids resulting from the anaerobic co-digestion of wastewater sludge with beverage rejects (beer and cola) and food wastes. The sludge and biosolids were obtained from two parallel pilot plant digesters operating with primary sludge obtained directly from a wastewater treatment plant, in which five different campaigns of co-digestates were studied - beer reject (10 %), cola reject (10 %), food waste A (10 %), food waste A (20 %), and food waste B (10 %). Gas chromatography-sulfur chemiluminescence detector (GC-SCD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used for detection of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) respectively. Sensory assessments were conducted using an odour detection port (ODP) connected to the GC-MS with two panellists. Variations in concentration, frequency, and intensity, were observed between the different campaigns. Hydrogen sulfide was the predominant VSC. However, other VSCs such as methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and dimethyl trisulfide were also identified as important odorants. Sixteen of the VOCs were identified as potential odorants, with toluene and 2-butanone having the highest VOCs concentrations and p-cresol having the highest odour activity values. Despite limited attention in the literature, VOCs contributed to the overall odour perception of biosolids and sludge gaseous emissions. This study highlighted the unpredictability of the impact of anaerobic co-digestion on odour emissions, emphasizing the need for thorough examination before introduction of co-substrates. This study demonstrated the effects of the sludge type and inoculation method on the N,N-dimethylformamide degradation pathway and associated microbial communities. The sludge type is critical for DMF metabolism, with acclimatized aerobic sludge having a significant advantage in terms of DMF metabolism performance, whereas acclimatized anaerobic sludge has a reduced DMF metabolism capacity. Metagenomic revealed increased abundances of Methanosarcina, Pelomona and Xanthobacter in the adapted anaerobic sludge, suggesting that anaerobic sludge can utilize the methyl products produced by DMF metabolism for growth. Adapted aerobic sludge had high Mycobacterium abundance, significantly boosting DMF hydrolysis. In addition, a large number of dmfA2 genes were found in aerobic sludge, more so in acclimatized sludge, indicating stronger DMF metabolism. Conversely, acclimatized anaerobic sludge showed lower abundance of dmd-tmd and mauA/B, qhpA genes, implying long-term DMF toxicity reduced anaerobic microbial activity. Metaproteomic analysis showed that Methanosarcina and Methanomethylovorans enzymes in anaerobic sludge metabolized dimethylamine and methylamine to methane, aiding DMF degradation. In the aerobic sludge, aminohydrolase proteins, which hydrolyze DMF, were significantly upregulated. The presence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) can adversely affect the anaerobic digestion process, reducing the efficiency of wastewater treatment and methane production. In this study, the addition of exogenous nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) enhanced the efficient treatment of SMX and promoted the energy recovery from antibiotic wastewater. The results showed that the removal of SMX in the reactor pairs with 0.5 g/L nZVI increased by 20 %, 35 %, and 27 %, and the methane production increased by 21.6 %, 40.9 %, and 26.6 %, respectively, compared with the control reactor at different SMX influent concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mg/L). The microbial community distribution indicated that the nZVI facilitated efficient cooperation between acid-producing and methanogens by regulating the relative abundance of functional bacteria, such as Anaerolinea and Methanothrix. Meanwhile, nZVI can effectively facilitate the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) and enhance electron transport system (ETS) activity by functioning as a conductive particle and increasing the abundance of genes related to cytochrome C (Cyt C) and type IV pili. In addition, nZVI can reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transmission by decreasing the relative abundance of ARGs. In this study, enhanced membrane coagulation (EMC) sludge was subjected to various alkaline (pH 7.2, 10, and 11), temperature (35 °C and 55 °C), and duration (0.5 h and 1 day) pretreatment conditions before being inoculated into biogas reactors operated for 176 days. Optimal pretreatment (pH 11, 55 °C, and 1 day) effectively hydrolyzed particulate COD to SCOD (8435 ± 121 mg/L). Higher pH levels also facilitated the dissolution of amphoteric aluminum-phosphorus (Al-P) compounds, enhancing phosphorus release (91.8 mg/L) from the sludge. This alkaline pretreatment, especially under optimal conditions, significantly increased biogas production and methane concentrations in long-term semi-continuous anaerobic digesters, with methane yields of 188.4 mL/gVS. The microbial community structure in all three reactors exhibited similar shifts, with saccharolytic and proteolytic fermentative bacteria dominating early stages and Thermovirga and an uncultured bacterium (Run-SP154) prevalent in later stages. Methanothrix, an acetotrophic methanogen, dominated the archaeal community in the inoculum (>91 %) and remained prominent (>40 %) throughout the experiment, while hydrogenotrophic methanogens from the genus Methanolinea increased over time, accounting for >24 % of the sequences in the final stages. Additionally, the feasibility of using EMC digestate as fertilizer for mulberry plants was tested, showing that digestate from optimally pretreated sludge promoted better growth than conventional chemical fertilizers. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has very limited effectiveness against the removal of many emerging contaminants, including the pervasive antimicrobial triclocarban (TCC). This is the first study to compare two thermal pretreatment methods to evaluate the fate of persistent TCC and its transformation/degradation by-products during advanced AD. Two electromagnetic heating methods are employed: one uses an innovative radio frequency (RF) heating system at 13.56 MHz, while the other uses microwave (MW) heating at 2450 MHz. The biodegradation was assessed by biochemical methane potential (BMP) assays utilizing spiked secondary sludge. Overall, advanced digestion processes, combined with RF and MW pretreatments, were highly effective in increasing TCC elimination (up to 65 %) from digested sludge after 60 days of incubation, compared to conventional digestion (without pretreatment), which achieved only up to 20 % elimination. The contribution of RF and MW pretreatments to the total TCC removal efficiencies of the overall advanced digestion process was 26 ± 1 % and 22 ± 1 %, respectively. After pretreatment, during thermophilic anaerobic digestion, 34 ± 3 % and 30 ± 2 % additional TCC removals were achieved from the RF- and MW-pretreated samples, respectively. Significantly higher TCC removal and biotransformation occurred in advanced BMPs incubated at thermophilic temperatures compared to mesophilic temperatures. The chlorinated TCC was converted to less toxic carbanilide during digestion, reducing the environmental risk of TCC through the dechlorination mechanism. Thiosulfate-driven denitrification coupled with anammox (TDDA) has garnered interest for its efficient and innovative nitrogen removal capabilities. However, the intricate dynamics of the internal microbial community and the specific characteristics of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) remain incompletely understood. This study combines experimental methods with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to address these gaps. The TDDA reactor was successfully started-up with an optimal S 2 O 3 2- -S/NO 3 - -N ratio of 0.6, achieving a nitrogen removal efficiency of 89.6%. Throughout this process, the relative abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia decreased by 10.2%, while the relative abundance of Candidatus Brocadia increased by 9.6%. The elevated concentration of NO₃ - -N inhibited Candidatus Kuenenia, and simultaneously stimulated the secretion of extracellular polymers, affecting Fe uptake by Candidatus Kuenenia. To further elucidate substrate competition, molecular docking simulations and DFT calculations were employed. The binding energy, compared with the electrostatic potential energy of the protein pocket, clearly demonstrated that Nir in AnAOB has a higher affinity for the substrate (E AnAOB  = -163.2 kJ/mol vs. E SOB  = -77.7 kJ/mol). Two-component regulatory system (TCS) is a widespread bacterial signal transduction mechanism and plays a critical role in bacterial adaptation to environments as well as regulating bacterial virulence. However, few studies have reported the actions of TCS in Pasteurella multocida, a zoonotic bacterial pathogen. In this study, genes encoding proteins homologous to the ArcAB TCS were identified in genome sequences of P. multocida belonging to different serogroups, and the transcription of both arcA and arcB was up-regulated in anaerobic and superoxygen environment. Compared to wild type strains, P. multocida arcA-deletion mutants (ΔarcA) displayed a decrease in growing under anaerobic conditions, biofilm formation, as well as the capacities of anti-serum bactericidal effect, cell adherence and invasion, anti-phagocytosis, and virulence in different in vivo models (Galleria mellonella and mice). RNA-Seq identified 70 significantly downregulated genes in ΔarcA compared to the wild type strain, and several of them are associated with P. multocida virulence. Among them, a universal stress protein E encoding gene uspE was characterized in P. multocida for the first time. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) demonstrated that the ArcAB TCS could regulate uspE directly. Deletion of uspE also led to a decrease of P. multocida in growing under anaerobic conditions, biofilm formation, anti-serum bactericidal effect, cell adherence and invasion, anti-phagocytosis, and virulence in mice. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is commonly used to dispose of laying hen manure. However, veterinary antibiotic residues present in chicken manure may affect the AD process. Here, the effects of three types of veterinary antibiotics commonly used in laying hen breeding on AD were explored. Manures containing antibiotics at two different concentrations were continuously added during AD for 5 days: amoxicillin (H AMX : 145.06 mg/kg, L AMX : 57.88 mg/kg), doxycycline (H DOC : 183.61 mg/kg, L DOC : 98.00 mg/kg), and ciprofloxacin (H CIP : 96.34 mg/kg, L CIP : 40.43 mg/kg). Compared with a control with no veterinary antibiotics, the amoxicillin and doxycycline groups presented no significant effects on biogas production, methane production, VFA concentration, acetic acid concentration or the pH of the AD system (P > 0.05). However, compared with the control, the ciprofloxacin groups presented significantly inhibited biogas and methane production during AD (P < 0.05), and the H CIP and L CIP groups presented significantly decreased biogas (47.82% and 45.37%, respectively) and methane (58.24% and 52.55%, respectively) production (P < 0.05). Moreover, the VFA and acetic acid concentrations of the ciprofloxacin groups were significantly higher than those of control during the entire AD period (P < 0.05), and the pH value at the withdrawal stage was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.01), with no significant difference between the H CIP and L CIP groups (P > 0.05). Our results suggest that ciprofloxacin causes VFA and acetic acid accumulation in AD systems, thereby reducing the pH of the systems and inhibiting methanogen growth, ultimately reducing methane production in the AD systems. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are excellent prebiotic which improve health through selective modulation of beneficial gut microbiome. Its production from agroresidues using microbial xylanase is considered as sustainable and economic approach. In this study a xylanase producing bacterium isolated from decaying wood soil was phylogenetically identified and designated as Bacillus stercoris DWS1. Xylanase (BsXln1) purified from the bacterium had pH and temperature optima of 7 and 37-60 °C, respectively, and it retained 85 % activity upon preincubation at 60 °C for 40 min. Indicating its moderate thermostability. Zymogram analysis of partially purified BsXln1 revealed its molecular weight of ∼35 kDa. B. stercoris DWS1 produced 200 U mL -1 of BsXln1 in presence of 1.5 % sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as carbon source; which was enhanced to 591 U mL -1 through optimization of cultural conditions. Xylan extracted from SCB was morphologically and structurally characterized, and then depolymerized by BsXln1 to yield XOS (400 mg g -1 ). Analysis of purified XOS by TLC, followed by ESI-MS showed predominance of xylobiose and xylotriose. XOS exhibited in vitro antioxidant activities against DPPH and ABTS free radicals, however, it had limited prebiotic activity on Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus fermentum under anaerobic condition. A strain named ED-3-7 with a high protease-producing ability was screened in a previous study. This strain can be used for the anaerobic fermentation of soybean meal (SBM) to degrade macromolecular antigen proteins and antinutritional factors. We here evaluated the nutritional quality of the anaerobic fermented SBM and its effects on the chicken intestinal microbial community. Crude protein and acid-soluble protein contents increased by 11.68% and 342.61%, glycinin and β-conglycinin decreased by 82.04% and 88.42%, urease content decreased by 90.10%, and the trypsin inhibitor content was lower than the range specified in the detection kit. After being fed with the fermented SBM, the average daily gain, nutrient digestibility of the chickens increased, and their intestinal bacterial community exhibited significant changes. The richness and diversity of bacterial species decreased, and Lactobacillus became the dominant genus, which was conducive to the health of chicken intestines. The experimental results revealed that ED-3-7 anaerobic fermentation improved the nutritional quality of SBM and had beneficial effects on chicken intestines. Trace elements (TEs) in anaerobic digestion (AD) are known to be essential for optimal biogas production, but inhibitive in excessive concentrations. However, the mechanisms of inhibition are not fully understood. The effects of the addition essential TEs (Co, Cu and Ni) and a non-essential TE (Cd) on the microbial community structure of AD were studied in lab-scale reactors, using total TE concentrations that ranged from 0 to 100 μM. Reactor performance was assessed by monitoring biogas production. The labile fraction of TEs (the most bioaccessible species) was determined by diffusive gradients in thin-films technique. Prokaryotic community composition was characterized through high throughput sequencing (HTS) targeting archaea and bacteria and qPCR to evaluate changes in methanogens and metal resistance genes. Only a minor fraction of added TEs was labile and it decreased over time, with Ni being the most labile. Although only a minor fraction of spiked concentration was labile, all TEs inhibited biogas production at the highest spiking concentration (100 μM), with higher inhibition observed for Cd and Ni. HTS and qPCR revealed changes, particularly in archaea, with reduced relative abundance at higher TE concentrations. Shifts in prokaryotic communities suggest alterations in AD metabolic pathways. High inhibition of biogas was linked to reduced diversity, dominance of the bacterial genus Klebsiella and changes in the ratio acetoclastic / hydrogenotrophic methanogens. Increasing volatile fatty acid (VFA) production via persulfate activation (i.e., chemical effect) in anaerobic digestion (AD) is an emerging resource utilization method. However, the reaction mechanisms responsible for improving VFA production in AD via simultaneous temperature regulation and persulfate activation by biochar remain unclear. In this study, three PB15 treatment systems of low temperature (15 °C), medium temperature (35 °C) and high temperature (55 °C) were set to explore the relationship between VFAs production and treatment temperature and the influence of temperature on the reaction mechanism. The results show that the improvement of hydrolysis and acidification efficiency of the system in the medium temperature system is the highest. The VFA yield and acid production rate in the treatment group at 35 °C were 2.49 and 5.22 times higher than those in the control group, respectively. The chemical effect effectively initiated the anaerobic acid production process and maintained the dominant role of the biological effect. The activity of persulfate is too low at low temperature, and its decomposition is too fast at high temperature. Plenty of free radicals lead to enhanced oxidation of the system, which may kill the fermentation bacteria. The NCM model indicates that microbial stability is reduced in high temperature systems. The SEM model showed that temperature change mainly affected substrate degradation by hydrolytic bacteria and indirectly affected acid production by acid-producing bacteria. The increasing consumption of antibiotics by humans and animals and their inappropriate disposal have increased antibiotic load in municipal and pharmaceutical industry waste, resulting in severe public health risks worldwide. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the main force of antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment, and the adaptability of biochar/hydrochar (BC/HC) makes it an attractive addition to AD systems, which aim to promote methane production efficiency. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to better understand the multifaceted function of BC/HC and its role in antibiotic-containing wastewater AD. This review article examines the current status of AD of antibiotic-containing wastewater and the effects of different preparation conditions on the physicochemical properties of BC/HC and AD status. The incorporation of BC/HC into the AD process has several potential benefits, contingent upon the physical and chemical properties of BC/HC. These benefits include mitigation of antibiotic toxicity, establishment of a stable system, enrichment of functional microorganisms and enhancement of direct interspecies electron transfer. The mechanism by which BC/HC enhances the AD of antibiotic-containing wastewater, with focus on microbial enhancement, was analysed. A review of the literature revealed that the challenge of optimization and process improvement must be addressed to enhance efficiency and clarify the mechanism of BC/HC in the AD of antibiotic-containing wastewater. The extensive production of olive mill solid waste (OMSW) from olive oil industry in the Mediterranean basin claims effective treatments and valorization strategies. This study aims to elucidate the potential of anaerobic digestion (AD) and anaerobic fermentation (AF) to convert pre-treated OMSW into biogas (CH 4 ) and volatile fatty acids (VFA), respectively. The two thermal treatment conditions (65 °C and 180 °C) that are being implemented in the industry that manages the OMSW were tested. Comparing the two treatments aims to demonstrate the influence on the AD process of the degree of solubilization and degradation of the metabolites produced from the same substrate. AD of OMSW treated at low-temperature (65 °C) exhibited similar methane yields (195 ± 8 mL CH 4 /g volatile solid (VS)) to raw OMSW. AD of the solid phase (SP) after high-temperature treatment with acid addition at 180 °C resulted in methane yields comparable to raw OMSW while the liquid phase (LP) exhibited low methane yields (85 ± 10 mL CH 4 /g VS). Nevertheless, LP/180 °C exhibited the highest VFA bioconversion at 27.6 %, compared to less than 10 % for SP/180 ºC, SP/65 °C, and raw OMSW. The VFA profile showed notable variations with thermal treatment temperatures. Propionic acid dominated at SP/65 °C, while acetic acid became the primary VFA at 180 °C. Furthermore, significant degradation rates of phenolic compounds and furans were observed during the final day of both anaerobic processes. Batch leaching experiments were conducted to evaluate the release of forty per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from sludge samples collected after thickening, anaerobic digestion, and dewatering processes at two wastewater treatment plants. The South District wastewater treatment plant (SDWWTP), which receives domestic wastewater and landfill leachate from a nearby landfill, and the Central District wastewater treatment plant (CDWWTP), which receives only domestic wastewater, were selected for this study. PFAS released into the aqueous phase were analyzed by sacrificial sampling after 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days. Results demonstrated rapid PFAS leaching, with the highest levels detected in biosolid leachates after just one day. Distinct differences were observed in PFAS composition and concentrations between the two treatment plants. Of the forty PFAS measured, nineteen were detected, with higher concentrations identified at SDWWTP. The input of landfill leachate to SDWWTP appears to have significantly contributed to the elevated levels of specific PFAS, particularly long-chain compounds, compared to the emerging short-chain PFAS found in biosolids. In addition to PFAS analysis, the compositions of the sludge samples, including total and volatile solids, protein, phosphorus (P), iron, aluminum, calcium, and magnesium, were also assessed. Spearman correlation analyses revealed moderate to strong relationships between PFAS levels in leachate and certain sludge components. For instance, correlations between P content and PFCAs and FTCAs were moderate (R 2  = 0.45-0.76). In thickener sludge leachate, strong correlations were observed for FPrPA (3:3 FTCA), PFDA, and PFTrDA with P, with R 2 values of 0.60, 0.53, and 0.54, respectively. In the digested sludge, correlations were found for PFHpA, PFDA, and PFNA (R 2  = 0.45-0.76). Also, for digested sludge leachate, strong correlations were found between the individual compounds PFHpA, PFHxA, PFNA, PFOA, and PFPeA (R 2  = 0.60-0.88). Marine invertebrates living in oxygen minimum zones (OMZ), where low pO 2 and high pCO 2 conditions co-occur, display physiological mechanisms allowing them to deal with these coupled stressors. We measured aerobic metabolic rate (MR a ) and the critical oxygen tension (P crit ), and calculated the oxygen supply capacity (α) of both the red (Grimothea monodon) and yellow (Grimothea johni) squat lobsters, under two pCO 2 scenarios (~414 and 1400 μatm). We also measured haemolymph pH, haemocyanin oxygen binding affinity (p 50 ), and haemolymph lactate content in both species under normoxia, low pCO 2 hypoxia and high pCO 2 hypoxia. Our results revealed that both species show extremely low P crit and P 50 values. The MR a increased under high pCO 2 condition in both species but hypoxia tolerance was not negatively impacted by pCO 2 . Furthermore, hypoxia tolerance is enhanced at high pCO 2 in the yellow squat lobster, and although not statically significant, α value follows the same trend. The red squat lobster has a better pH e regulation and lower reliance on anaerobic metabolism. While the yellow squat lobster had a poorer pH e regulation during high pCO 2 hypoxia, relying more on anaerobic metabolism. Our research suggests that elevated pCO 2 is crucial on respiratory processes in hypoxia tolerant organisms, ameliorating the effects of hypoxia alone. The incorporation of biochar can significantly enhance the performance of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs), achieving up to a 95 % increase in pollutant removal efficiency and an 86 % improvement in methane production. Algae biochar, in particular, shows great promise as an effective additive in AnMBR systems because of its low cost (approximately $0.470/kg) and the abundance of raw material sources. This paper presents a comprehensive applicability analysis of algae biochar-AnMBRs from a sustainability assessment perspective, addressing technical, environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Key technical benefits include a reduction in membrane fouling by 92.1 % and an enhancement of energy recovery by 58.7 % compared to conventional AnMBRs. Following this, the paper evaluates algae biochar-AnMBRs from environmental, economic, and social viewpoints to emphasize the practical applicability and potential of this process. Finally, this review addresses the limitations related to the full-scale implementation of this technology and proposes strategic approaches to overcome these challenges. Cross-feeding based on amino acids metabolism is an important strategy by which anammox bacteria and the co-existing heterotrophs facilitate their own growth and survival. Arginine is one of the necessary amino acids required for bacterial protein biosynthesis but whether adding arginine could benefit growth of anammox bacteria remains unknown. In this study, arginine was supplemented at dose of 5 mg·L -1 to promote the nitrogen removal performance of anammox bioreactors under varied loading rates. The results showed that nitrogen removal efficiency increased by 10.2 % under higher loading rates. Arginine addition substantially simulated the secretion of extracellular proteins and polysaccharides within anammox consortia as a strategy against unfavorable conditions. Canditatus Kuenenia dominated the anammox consortia and their 16S rRNA abundance and anammox-related functional genes were significantly increased by up to 0.42 times and 5.81 times, respectively. Most frequently used biological method was improved anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A/A/O) process for treating actual pesticide wastewater presently. However, the effluent results were far away from what the national standard expects due to pesticide wastewater characteristics of high COD concentration, high total nitrogen (TN) concentration and high toxicity. In this study, a novel two-phase anaerobic/aerobic/integrated deoxygenated and anoxic reactor associated with membrane process (P1) were regarded as excellent candidates for the treatment of pesticide wastewater, compared the removal efficiency of pollutants with improved A/A/O process (P2) under different hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Effluent ethylene thiourea (ETU) concentration was reduced effectively by 67.1 % in P1. The average cyanide (CN - ) effluent concentration in P1 and P2 was 0.40 mg/L and 6.67 mg/L, respectively. During the entire HRT change period, P1 significantly increased the biological oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) removal efficiency by 12.98 %. The average effluent COD concentration of P1 was 36.41 mg/L, while that of P2 was 984.42 mg/L. In addition, TN removal efficiency of P1 exhibited distinct superiority. When HRT was 72 h, the average TN effluent concentration of P1 and P2 was 12.67 mg/L and 67.66 mg/L. The sludge performance indicators have been determined and results showed that the sludge viscosity of the membrane reactor in P1 had merely 32.6 % higher than that of the secondary sedimentation tank in P2, and the average vertical displacement of sludge settleability in P1 was 23.0 % slight lower than that of P2. The overall sludge performance proved that higher sludge concentration was allowed in P1. Moreover, experiment improved nitrite reductase (NIR) and nitrate reductase (NAR) in P1 were less susceptible to be suppressed by ETU and CN - increase compared with P2. Excess sludge, the primary by-product of wastewater treatment plants, is the source and sink of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Sludge pretreatments are an indispensable pathway to improve the resource recovery and harmfulness for anaerobic digestion sludge. However, fewer studies have compared the effects of different pretreatment technologies on the distribution of ARGs during anaerobic sludge digestion. Here, this study established seven anaerobic digesters, and four typical ARGs and one integrase gene of class 1 integron (intI1) regarded as the representative mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were examined during the whole anaerobic digestion process. It was found anaerobic digestion could effectively remove ARGs with about 70.86% removal rate of total ARGs. Among these pretreatments, the reduce efficiency of ARGs was the highest in 50 °C pretreatment, followed by oxidant, and the last was acid-alkaline. The microbial community analysis demonstrated the microbial community structure, including ARGs hosts and antibiotic resistant bacteria, was significantly changed and influenced by high temperature pretreatment. In addition, high temperature and K 2 S 2 O 8 observably decrease the level of ROS production. Macro transcriptome analysis indicated that sludge pretreatment, except for 50 °C pretreatment, up-regulated the genes relevant to lyases and transferase, but down-regulated the genes responsible for peroxidase, antioxidant enzymes and T4SS gene. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process is an economical and energy-efficient method of wastewater nitrogen removal. However, they are highly susceptible to starvation stress caused by sudden environmental changes. Rapid reactivation of starved anammox sludge is a crucial method to address seed sludge shortages and expand practical applications. This study investigated the impact of gravel balls on the reactivation of long-term starved anammox granular sludge (628 days). The results showed that gravel balls enhanced the recovery of nitrogen removal performance in starved anammox sludge, with nitrogen removal efficiency being 19.88% higher than the control group at the end of the recovery phase. The gravel balls also increased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, contributing to the stability of the anammox system. Furthermore, the gravel balls promoted the proliferation of anammox bacteria, with the relative abundance of anammox bacteria reaching 38.25% on the 80th day. The analyses of microbial functions indicated that gravel balls facilitated cross-feeding and co-metabolism among microbes, while enhancing quorum sensing associated with anammox bacteria, forming a multifunctional community network centered on anammox bacteria. Providing anaerobic environments can enhance the denitrification capacity of wastewater treatment systems. This study developed an aerobic-anaerobic downflow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor to increase denitrification. A siphon tube was integrated with a conventional DHS to create anaerobic conditions by controlling a water column inside the reactor. The siphon heights were set in the middle of the reactor, representing 2/5 of the total volume. Anaerobic conditions were maintained at the bottom (1/5), whereas aerobic conditions were maintained at the top (2/5). The middle part experienced alternating aerobic-anaerobic conditions within a siphon cycle. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 3 h, and the temperature was maintained at 30 °C. The study was divided into the low-loading and standard phases based on the influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) concentration. During the low-loading phase, the aerobic-anaerobic DHS exhibited a higher sCOD removal rate (53.6 ± 26.6 %) than the control aerobic DHS (35.6 ± 31.9). However, the removal efficiencies for NH₄ + -N and total nitrogen (TN) were lower, averaging 37.1 ± 24.7 % and 31.5 ± 21 %, respectively. In the standard phase, the aerobic-anaerobic DHS achieved an sCOD removal rate of 69.3 ± 14.8 % and an NH₄ + -N removal rate of 17.2 ± 11.4 %. The control aerobic DHS showed higher sCOD and NH₄ + -N removal at 84.7 ± 10.8 % and 54.1 ± 12.8 %, respectively, possibly due to the reduced aerobic zone volume in the aerobic-anaerobic DHS. The TN removal rates were also lower in the aerobic-anaerobic DHS (17.1 ± 11.4 %) than in the control DHS (25 ± 12.3 %). However, based on the ratio of nitrification to TN removal, the aerobic-anaerobic DHS showed a high denitrification rate of 85 %-100 %. The highest number of denitrifiers was in the middle section of the aerobic-anaerobic DHS, with Rhodocyclaceae the most prominent, followed by Comamonadaceae. Stringent wastewater discharge standards require wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to focus on enhancing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. Increasing sludge concentration by regulation of sludge retention time (SRT) would enhance wastewater treatment loads. However, phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) would be outcompeted by glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) under long SRT, leading to a collapse of P removal. In this work, pilot-scale anaerobic-oxic-anoxic (AOA) and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) systems with long SRT (30 d) were parallelly established for actual urban wastewater treatment. The results indicated that sludge reflux ratio, temperature, and C/N ratio significantly impact N and P removal performance of AOA and AAO systems with long SRT, and removal efficiency of AOA system significantly exceeded that of AAO system. AOA system with long SRT achieved the optimal performance at sludge reflux ratio of 200%, temperature of 25 °C, and C/N ratio of 8, with COD, NH 4 + -N, TN, and PO 4 3- -P removal ratio of 92.80 ± 2.24%, 97.38 ± 0.89%, 88.97 ± 2.47%, and 94.33 ± 3.27%, respectively. In addition, compared to AAO system, AOA system could save 23.08% of the aeration volume. This work highlighted that AOA system with long SRT included multiple coupled nitrogen and phosphorus removal pathways, such as autotrophic/heterotrophic nitrification, anoxic/oxic denitrification, endogenous denitrification, and denitrifying phosphorus removal. Low anaerobic biological conversion rate is a challenge in the anaerobic biological treatment of phenol wastewater. The dominant syntrophic acetate oxidation and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis (SAO-HM) pathway is expected to solve the problem. However, there are raw studies on artificially simulating a dominant SAO-HM pathway for enhancing the anaerobic bio-conversion of phenol. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 and micro-hydrogen (Fe 3 O 4 /H 2 ) was used to strengthen the anaerobic bio-conversion of phenol by simulating the dominant SAO-HM pathway. The results suggested Fe 3 O 4 and H 2 had a coupling promotion on the anaerobic bio-conversion of phenol and Fe 3 O 4 /H 2 increased the relative abundance of Syntrophus (29.35%), Syntrophorhabdu (3.27%), Clostridium (3.01%) and Methanobacterium (65.74%), indicating Fe 3 O 4 /H 2 formed a dominant SAO-HM pathway. However, Fe 3 O 4 /H 2 obviously reduced the conductivity of sludge, the extracellular protein and the functional gens pilA, pilB and OmcS, implying direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) generated by Fe 3 O 4 was interfered by micro hydrogen in extracellular electron transport process which reduced the efficiency of extracellular electron transport. Inadequate methane production and insufficient hydrolysis-acidification activity impede the practical application of anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS). Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials attains promising capability of controlling proton/electron transfer in AD processes. This study used a typical iron-based MOF and MIL-88A(Fe) to improve the methane production via digesting WAS. These materials were prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method. The findings indicated that the addition of 150 mg MIL-88A(Fe)/g WAS VS resulted in a 57.23% increase in accumulated methane production and a 43.84% increase in daily maximum methane production. The methane production rate (R max ) also increased from 22.25 to 29.14 mL/g VS/d. The enhanced electron transfer capacity, improved hydrolysis of WAS, boosted acetate generation, and mitigated accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) collectively contributed to the better methane yield in the MIL-88A(Fe)-added system. The significant enrichment of Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta along with the up-regulation of key methanogenesis enzyme-encoding genes jointly suggested that the CO 2 reduction and methanogenesis were strengthened. Moreover, MIL-88A(Fe) stimulated the production of c-type cytochrome and e-pili, facilitating direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between norank-f-SC-I-84 and Methanobacterium. Bioaugmentation is a bioremediation approach to treat groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethenes, but currently it faces challenges such as poor microbiome stability and effectiveness, due to blind species integration and metabolic inhibition. The objective of this study was to create a controllable and functionally stable microbial community for dichlorination application. For this, we utilized targeted screening to identify dechlorinating bacteria from contaminated groundwater, that in combination would form an anaerobic dechlorination microbial community with stabilizing metabolic interactions between the constituents. The results showed that two organohalide-respiring bacterial (OHRB) species were isolated, and these were identified as Enterobacter bugandensis X4 and Enterobacter sichuanensis C4. Upon co-cultivation with lactic acid as the carbon source, the strains demonstrated metabolic interactions and synergistic dehalogenation ability towards trichloroethene (TCE). It was further demonstrated that the functional microbiome constructed with the strains was stable over time and exhibited a robust TCE degradation rate of 80.85% at 13.13 mg/L TCE within 10 days. Additionally, the complete conversion of TCE was achieved through microbiome bioaugmentation, this augmented microbiome increased the degradation rate towards 52.55 mg/L TCE by approximately 30% within 6 days. Additionally, bioaugmentation stimulated the growth of indigenous OHRB, such as Dehalobacter and Desulfovibrio. It also promoted a positive succession of the microbial community. Nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) plays a crucial role in mitigating methane (CH 4 ) in natural environments. The increasing presence of microplastics (MPs) in these environments due to human activities is a growing concern. However, the impact of MPs on n-DAMO microorganisms and their role in greenhouse gas regulation, particularly CH 4 reduction, remains unclear. This study investigates the effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on n-DAMO activity and the associated microbial communities in freshwater and marine sediments at varying concentrations of (R0/M0-no addition, R1/M1-0.5 %, R2/M2-2%). The results showed that the presence of MPs significantly increased the n-DAMO rate (2.89-3.58 nmol 13 CO 2 g -1 d -1 ) compared to the control groups (R0: 1.29 nmol 13 CO 2 g -1 d -1 , M0: 0.11 nmol 13 CO 2 g -1 d -1 ), with marine sediments showing a more pronounced response. Additionally, the proportional contribution of nitrate-DAMO processes increased following MP exposure. The presence of PVC MPs also altered the microbial diversity of n-DAMO. Upon the addition of MPs, the microbial community composition of n-DAMO in marine sediments changed more significantly. Nitrate nitrogen fertilizer was usually used to mitigate arsenic (As) release and mobilization in the anaerobic contaminated paddy soil. However, the effect of the interplay between nitrate fertilizer and biochar on As availability as well as the involved mechanism were poorly understood. Herein, the effects and mechanisms of biochar, nitrate fertilizer, and biochar-based nitrate fertilizer on the availability of As in the contaminated paddy soil were investigated via a microcosm incubation experiment. Results indicated that the application of biochar-based nitrate fertilizer significantly lessened the available As concentration in the contaminated paddy soil from 3.01 ± 0.03 (control group) to 2.24 ± 0.08 mg kg -1 , which presented an immobilization efficiency of 26.6 % better than those of individual biochar (13.5 %) and nitrate fertilizer (17.6 %), exhibiting a synergistic effect. Moreover, the biochar-based nitrate fertilizer also facilitated the transformation of more toxic arsenite in the contaminated soil to less toxic arsenate. Further, biochar-based nitrate fertilizer increased soil redox potential (Eh), dissolved organic carbon, organic matter, and nitrate yet decreased soil pH and ammonium, which changed the microbial community in the soil, enhancing the relative abundance of Bacillus, Arthrobacter, and Paenibacillus. These functional microorganisms drove the coupled transformation between nitrate denitrification and Fe(II) or As(III) oxidation, favoring As immobilization in the anaerobic paddy soil. Additionally, the co-application of biochar offset the negative effect of single nitrate fertilizer on microbial community diversity. Overall, biochar-based nitrate fertilizer could be a promising candidate for the effective immobilization of As in the anaerobic paddy soil. The accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) over anaerobic digestion (AD) leads to malfunctioning of industrial reactors, hence decreasing biogas production. Real-time monitoring of VFAs is a challenge due to the complexity and high cost of current methods for their quantification. For this reason, this research evaluated the application of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to quantify volatile fatty acids as a tool for AD reactors monitoring. To do that, 129 samples from various AD reactors fed with olive oil pomace were taken and their NIR spectra were acquired with a hand-held spectrometer. After performing grid search, three spectral variable selection methods, namely competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, uninformative variable elimination (UVE) and successive projections algorithm, were assayed before developing PLRS models to correlate the NIR light transmittance through the samples at the wavelengths selected by those methods with their VFAs concentrations. UVE led to the best performance for all the VFAs assayed. Thus, R 2 of validation of UVE-PLSR models for acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric and total VFAs were 0.895, 0.622, 0.866, 0.898 and 0.871, respectively. The predictive model for total VFAs achieved the highest accuracy (RMSEV = 539.5 mg/L), explained by the correlation between the light absorption at the wavelengths selected by UVE and the chemical characteristics of VFAs. This study aims to investigate effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and aerated hydrodynamic retention time (HRT) on nitrogen removal and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions in a novel anaerobic-swing-anoxic-oxic (ASAO) continuous plug-flow system for treating low carbon to nitrogen ratio municipal wastewater. The swing zones had varying DO levels and volumes, deciding the aerated HRT of the ASAO system. Results showed that low DO level (0.8-1.0 mg/L) and short aerated HRT led to high nitrogen removal performance (91.4 %-96.3 %) and low N 2 O emission factor (2.8 %). The simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) in swing zones and endogenous denitrification in anoxic zones contributed to the nitrogen removal. Meanwhile, the SND and autotrophic denitrification processes were identified as the N 2 O sources. Low DO level enriched ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and enhanced the SND and autotrophic denitrification pathway. This study simulates a major environmental scenario involving "organic fertilizer source" plastics, by exploring the key factors influencing the changes in plastic-films during anaerobic digestion (AD), as well as the responses of the anaerobically digested plastics to ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. The results demonstrate that the degradation effect of AD on plastics is reflected by their yellowish and ruptured appearance, slightly worn surfaces, hardening and opacity, and fragmentation. AD significantly increases the content of oxygen-containing functional groups and the degree of unsaturation in plastic films, with thermophilic temperature processes proving more effective than those conducted at mesophilic temperatures. Exposure to UV light has been found to amplify the degradative effects, suggesting the potential cumulative impact of AD and UV. Both AD and UV irradiation reduced the hydrophilicity of plastics. In particular, the hydrophobicity of polylactic acid films was completely disrupted under overlay-exposure. Furthermore, microbial populations on plastic surfaces were mainly bacterial. These bacterial populations were primarily influenced by temperature, and moderately by the plastic types. In contrast, archaea were predominantly affected by both temperature and digested substrate. Enhancing extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency is crucial for improving the anaerobic digestion (AD) system's capability to treat recalcitrant wastewater. In this study, a novel S, N co-doped biochar (S-N-BC) was prepared through surface engineering to optimize EET within AD systems. The addition of S-N-BC significantly enhanced the performance of a mesophilic AD system treating Congo red wastewater, increasing the decolorization rate by 78 %, COD degradation rate by 82 %, and methane yield by 87 % compared to the control. Additionally, the shock resistance of anaerobic granular sludge was improved, as evidenced by the formation of the protective extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) barrier and the enhanced activities of the electron transport system. Mechanistic analysis revealed that adding S-N-BC did not alter the Congo red decolorization pathway but significantly enriched various electrochemically active bacteria and established EET pathways between microbial-pollutant and inter-microbial. This significantly accelerated EET efficiency within the AD system, ensuring stable and efficient operation under challenging conditions. The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) carried out by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) plays an important role in mitigating methane emissions from aqueous environments and has applications in bioremediation and wastewater treatment. Previous studies showed that AOM could be coupled to chromate reduction. However, the specific responsible microorganisms and the biochemical mechanisms are unclear. Herein, we showed that a consortium dominated by ANME "Candidatus Methanoperedens" was able to couple AOM to the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) at a stoichiometry close to the theoretical ratio. Quantitative distribution analysis of Cr(III) products suggested Cr(VI) was predominantly reduced via the extracellular respiratory pathways. Further Cr(III)-targeted fluorescent visualization combined with single-cell electron microscopic imaging suggested that Cr(VI) was reduced by "Ca. Methanoperedens" independently. Biochemical mechanism investigation via proteomic analysis showed proteins for nitrate reduction under nitrate-reducing conditions were significantly downregulated in Cr(VI)-reducing incubation. Instead, many multiheme cytochrome c (MHCs) were among the most upregulated proteins during the Cr(VI) reduction process, suggesting MHC-governed pathways for extracellular Cr(VI) reduction. This research aims to investigate the influence of sulfate on the performance of microbial electrolysis cell-assisted anaerobic digester (MEC-AD) across varying sulfate conditions, including no sulfate and reduced COD/sulfate ratios from 20 to 1. The principal results indicate a gradual decline in methane yield in the MEC-AD from 78.7 ± 2.3 % under no sulfate conditions to 56.2 ± 2.0 % at a COD/sulfate ratio of 1, contrasting with a more substantial decrease in the control reactor (69.9 ± 3.6 % to 32.8 ± 1.5 %). The MEC-AD reactor exhibits heightened resilience to sulfide toxicity, showcasing higher specific methanogenic activities. Key findings suggest that the MEC-AD reactor maintains lower free sulfide concentrations, attributed to its higher pH and potential anodic sulfide oxidation. Additionally, the study reveals the promotion of syntrophic partnerships in the MEC-AD reactor, particularly between sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) such as Desulfovibrio, Desulfomicrobium, and Desulfobulbus, and other microbial groups, including hydrogenotrophic methanogens and electroactive bacteria. Discharge of improperly treated sulfamethoxazole (SMX) wastewater seriously threats environmental security and public health. Anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactors (AnDMBRs) technology would be cost-effective for SMX wastewater treatment, considering its low cost and satisfactory treatment efficiency. The performance of AnDMBR, though demonstrated to be excellent in treating many types of wastewaters, was for the first time investigated for treating SMX wastewater. Particular efforts were devoted to elucidating the advantages of dynamic membrane (DM) and the governing mechanism responsible for DM fouling with the presence of SMX. The threshold SMX concentration for AnDMBR was found to be 90 mg/L and the AnDMBR exhibited excellent removal efficiency of COD (90.91 %) and SMX (88.95 %) as well as satisfactory acute toxicity reduction rate (88.84 %). It was noteworthy that the DM made indispensable contributions to the removal of COD (14.26 %) and SMX (22.20 %) as well as the acute reduction of toxicity (25.81 %). The presence of SMX significantly accelerated DM fouling mainly by increasing its specific resistance, which was attributed to the increased content of small particles, high-valence metal ions and EPS content (mainly hydrophobic proteins), resulting in a denser DM structure with lower porosity. Nanoplastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues, and its bioaccumulation in aquatic environment also causes a great difficulty in treatment. Therefore, this work investigated the microbial dynamics of mainstream anaerobic ammonia oxidizing (anammox) process to treat the wastewater containing typical nanoplastics, as well as the fate and regulation mechanism of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) with different concentrations. The results showed that 0.1-0.5 mg L -1 of PS-NPs had no significant effect on the nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE). When the concentration of PS-NPs increased from 0.5 mg L -1 to 2 mg L -1 , the NRE of R 1 with PS-NPs decreased from 94.9 ± 2.3 % to 77.0 ± 1.6 %, while the control reactor R 0 maintained a stable NRE. The widespread utilization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as "forever chemicals" is posing significant environmental risks and adverse effects on human health. Microbial degradation (e.g., bacteria and fungi) has been identified as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for PFAS degradation. However, its degradation efficiency, biotransformation pathway, and microbial mechanism vary significantly under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences in PFAS microbial degradation by bacteria and fungi under different oxygen conditions. Initially, the efficiencies and metabolites of PFAS microbial degradation were compared under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, including perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds. Additionally, the microbial mechanisms of PFAS microbial degradation were obtained by summarizing key degrading microbes and enzymes. Finally, the comparisons between aerobic and anaerobic conditions in PFAS microbial degradation were provided, addressing the main challenges and proposing future research directions focused on seeking combined biodegradation techniques, exploring novel microbial species capable of degrading PFAS, and confirming complete biodegradation pathways. Heavy metals contained in waste activated sludge (WAS), especially zinc ions, have an inhibitory effect on the anaerobic digestion. However, the effects of zinc ions on digester performance, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) reduction, and the microbial community involved in the anaerobic mesophilic co-digestion (AcoD) of WAS and food waste (FW) have not been fully characterized. Therefore, batch trials and continuous stirred tank reactors were used under different zinc-ion concentrations. Findings showed that the AcoD system can tolerate a maximum zinc ion of 540 mg/L in a short-term batch and 470 mg/L in a long-term AcoD system, promoting methane production of approximately 1.0-17.0 %. Metagenomic analysis revealed that syntrophic H 2 transfer occurred between Syntrophomonas and Methanoculleus and the aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathways were both enhanced by 1.18- and 1.16 times, respectively. Moreover, the relative abundance of Methanosarcina increased from 58.4 % to 72.5 % at 470 mg/L to adapt to the high zinc ion concentration during long-term continuous operation. These results revealed that AcoD with a low zinc ion concentration can effectively increase the removal percentage of ARGs.
