Abstract

What aspects are relevant to understand and predict the outstanding properties and uses of nanomaterials? From the combination of the compositional characteristics of atoms (e.g., atomic number, size, electronegativity), the way they organize in space (e.g., symmetry, crystallinity, energy levels), along with their shape (i.e., morphology), it is commonly possible to understand the properties manifested by nanomaterials. This composition-structure-morphology-property correlation was highly refined by 20th century physics and chemistry knowledge. The rational understanding of this correlation enables scientists and engineers to predict and produce nanomaterials that will efficiently remove water contaminants, detect pollutants, or convert sunlight into electricity. In this context, nanomaterials properties of environmental interest will be discussed in this chapter, and representative examples will be provided as an introduction to this multidisciplinary field. In addition, the high-end technics and tools currently used to access and reveal the composition, structure, and morphology of nanomaterials will result in identifying their environmentally significant properties.

Abstract

International audience; We study the pressure induced collapse of single-, double- and triple-wall carbon nanotubes. Theoretical simulations were performed using density-functional tight-binding theory. For tube walls separated by the graphitic distance, we show that the radial collapse pressure, Pc, is mainly determined by the diameter of the innermost tube, din and that its value significantly deviates from the usual Pc∝din−3 Lévy-Carrier law. A modified expression, Pcdin−3=α(1−β2∕din2) with α and β numerical parameters, which reduces the collapse pressure for low diameters is proposed. For din ≳ 1.5 nm an enhanced stability is found which may be assigned as due to the bundle intertube geometry-induced interactions. If the inner and outer tubes are separated by larger distances, the collapse process is found to be more complex. High-pressure resonant Raman experiments were performed in double-wall carbon nanotubes having inner and outer diameters averaging 1.5 nm and 2.0 nm, respectively. A modification in the response of the G-band and the disappearance of the radial breathing modes between 2 GPa and 5 GPa indicate the beginning and the end of the radial collapse process. Experimental results are in good agreement with our theoretical predictions, but do not allow to discriminate from those corresponding to a continuum mechanics model.

7. Synthesis, characterization and catalytic properties of nanostructured porous carbon

Abstract

MCM-41, MCM-48 and FAU molecular sieves were used as template to prepare carbon nitrides (CN). The amine-functionalized CN were characterized by XRD, Raman and infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption isotherms as well as the catalytic activity in a fine chemistry reaction was evaluated. MCM-41 is the best matrix to obtain ordered materials with a graphitic character. Also, sucrose is the best carbon precursor to obtain a pore filling of 32 wt.% compared with naphthalene and carbon tetrachloride. The nanoporous carbons studied are potentially of great importance because of their textural features and high catalytic performance. It must be correlated to the basic active sites that provide active, selective and stable catalysts to the target reaction.

Abstract

The interaction of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (dioxin) with carbon nanotubes is analyzed by ab initio methods. The structural and electronic properties of the dioxin interacting with the pristine, defective and B-, N-, and Si-doped SWNTs are considered by studying different geometries.
