Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for several diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Alternative nicotine products with reduced risk potential (RRPs) including tobacco heating products (THPs), and e-cigarettes have recently emerged as viable alternatives to cigarettes that may contribute to the overall strategy of tobacco harm reduction due to the significantly lower levels of toxicants in these products’ emissions as compared to cigarette smoke. Assessing the effects of RRPs on biological responses is important to demonstrate the potential value of RRPs towards tobacco harm reduction. Here, we evaluated the inflammatory and signaling responses of human lung epithelial cells to aqueous aerosol extracts (AqE) generated from the 1R6F reference cigarette, the glo™ THP, and the Vype ePen 3.0 e-cigarette using multiplex analysis of 37 inflammatory and phosphoprotein markers. Cellular exposure to the different RRPs and 1R6F AqEs resulted in distinct response profiles with 1R6F being the most biologically active followed by glo™ and ePen 3.0. 1R6F activated stress-related and pro-survival markers c-JUN, CREB1, p38 MAPK and MEK1 and led to the release of IL-1α. glo™ activated MEK1 and decreased IL-1β levels, whilst ePen 3.0 affected IL-1β levels but had no effect on the signaling activity compared to untreated cells. Our results demonstrated the reduced biological effect of RRPs and suggest that targeted analysis of inflammatory and cell signaling mediators is a valuable tool for the routine assessment of RRPs.

Respiratory infectious diseases, notably recurring waves of COVID-19 during autumn and winter, have significantly impacted global health and strained public health systems. Home isolation has emerged as a crucial and economical strategy to mitigate these impacts. This study investigates aerosol transmission and infection risks in home isolation environments using the Lattice Boltzmann Method with Large Eddy Simulation (LBM-LES). We focused on the impact of door operations and various natural ventilation rates on aerosol transmission and exposure risk in adjacent rooms. Our findings reveal that, without ventilation, aerosol leakage through door gaps poses a minimal infection risk to adjacent rooms, with an average probability of less than 2 × 10−5. However, with adequate ventilation, the infection risk for individuals in adjacent rooms for over 3 h can reach 60 %–70 %. Brief door movements have limited impact on infection risk (p ≤ 0.05, d ≤ 0.20), with aerosol leakage mainly occurring through door gaps rather than door movements. To reduce cross-infection during home isolation, we recommend avoiding prolonged stays near downwind walls facing the door. This research provides insights into aerosol dynamics in home isolation scenarios, offering theoretical guidance for designing safe isolation spaces and practical advice for healthy family members to minimize infection risk.

The shape of environmental aerosols contributes to the discrepancy in their dynamic behavior compared to spherical particles, which have received inadequate consideration. We reported deposition patterns of aerosols and aerosol-transmissible pathogens in real human respiratory systems, taking into account their actual shape, using a validated computational-based model. We found that the shape of the aerosols significantly influenced its deposits and accessibility within the respiratory system, significantly in the tracheobronchial region. As an example, we estimated that over 180 % of differences in deposits in the trachea and bronchi were attributable to pathogens shape, inferring the underlying pathogenicity difference of these regions. These findings, capturing the spatial heterogeneity of pathogens and aerosols deposition in human respiratory system, have major implication for understanding the evolution of aerosol-related disease.

Rapidly increasing urbanization in recent decades has elevated the subway as the primary public transportation mode in metropolitan areas. Indoor air quality (IAQ) inside subways is an important factor that influences the health of commuters and subway workers. This review discusses the subway IAQ in different cities worldwide by comparing the sources and abundance of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) in these environments. Factors that affect PM concentration and chemical composition were found to be associated with the subway internal structure, train frequency, passenger volume, and geographical location. Special attention was paid to air pollutants, such as transition metals, volatile/semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs), and bioaerosols, due to their potential roles in indoor chemistry and causing adverse health impacts. In addition, given that the IAQ of subway systems is a public health issue worldwide, we calculated the Gini coefficient of urban subway exposure via meta-analysis. A value of 0.56 showed a significant inequity among different cities. Developed regions with higher per capita income tend to have higher exposure. By reviewing the current advances and challenges in subway IAQ with a focus on indoor chemistry and health impacts, future research is proposed toward a sustainable urban transportation systems.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, a series of public health issues caused by the spread of antibiotic resistance have been widely concerned. The indoor air of livestock and poultry houses is considered to be one of the main sources of environmental contamination of ARGs. This study characterized the micro-organisms and ARGs in the air particulate matter of chicken houses using metagenomics. The study successfully detected 761 different subtypes of resistance genes including aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, MLSB etc., 4 types of mobile genetic elements, and various pathogenic microorganisms from the aerosols in the chicken coop environment. The results showed that the abundance of ARGs in the air of the chicken coop was at a relatively high level, correlation network analysis showed that multiple types of ARGs could promote the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Aerosol emissions from the CO2-capture process have a significant impact on both solvent depletion and environmental contamination. This work comprehensively investigated the emissions of AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1propanol)/PZ (piperazine) from a bench-scale platform and a CO2-capture pilot plant. The concentration of nuclei in flue gas is a key factor affecting aerosol emissions, and a high nuclei concentration leads to more serious aerosol emission problems. The amine emissions after the absorber in the three different scenarios (no added nuclei, nuclei added, and pilot plant) were 273, 1051, and 1347 mg/Nm3, respectively. Increasing the lean-solvent temperature promoted aerosol emissions, and increasing the liquid/gas ratio and CO2 loading in the lean solvent suppressed aerosol emissions. In the pilot plant, the effects of four mitigation measures were evaluated, and it was found that dry bed and acid washing had better mitigation effects than did conventional water washing; amine emissions could be reduced to as low as 21 mg/Nm3 PZ and 25 mg/Nm3 AMP. This study provides a reference for the design and optimization of carbon-dioxide-capture systems, which can help to reduce the impact on the environment.

In recent years, aerosols have been recognized as a prominent medium for the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. Among these, particles with a particle size of 2 μm (PM2.5) can directly penetrate the alveoli. However, the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes in aerosols from pet hospitals and the potential risks posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in these aerosols to humans and animals need to be investigated. In this study, cefotaxime-resistant bacteria were collected from 5 representative pet hospitals in Changchun using a Six-Stage Andersen Cascade Impactor. The distribution of bacteria in each stage was analyzed, and bacteria from stage 5 and 6 were isolated and identified. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of isolates against 12 antimicrobials were determined using broth microdilution method. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction was employed to detect resistance genes and mobile genetic elements that could facilitate resistance spread. The results indicated that ARBs were enriched in stage 5 (1.1–2.1 μm) and stage 3 (3.3–4.7 μm) of the sampler. A total of 159 isolates were collected from stage 5 and 6. Among these isolates, the genera Enterococcus spp. (51%), Staphylococcus spp. (19%), and Bacillus spp. (14%) were the most prevalent. The isolates exhibited the highest resistance to tetracycline and the lowest resistance to cefquinome. Furthermore, 56 (73%) isolates were multidrug-resistant. Quantitative PCR revealed the expression of 165 genes in these isolates, with mobile genetic elements showing the highest expression levels. In conclusion, PM2.5 from pet hospitals harbor a significant number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and carry mobile genetic elements, posing a potential risk for alveolar infections and the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.

The paper presents the results of a study of radioactive noble gases and from decay products in the atmosphere of the reactor hall of the research nuclear reactor IVV-2M. The distribution of short-lived 88Rb and 138Cs activity by sizes of aerosol particles was measured in the range of 0.5–1000 nm. It is shown that radioactive aerosols are characterized by three main modes with AMTD 2–3 nm, 7–15 nm and 400 nm. About 70% of aerosol activity is due to 88Rb. The equilibrium factor between 88Kr and 88Rb is 0.2 ± 0.1. The total concentration of aerosols particles was measured using an aerosol diffusion spectrometer. The value of unattached fraction of radioactive aerosols in the atmosphere of reactor hall IVV-2M was f = 0.15–0.25 at the average total aerosol particles concentration from 20,000 cm−3 to 53,000 cm−3.

Background: Storage reservoirs of radioactive waste could be the source of atmospheric pollution due to the efflux of aqueous aerosol from their water areas. The main mechanism of formation of aqueous aerosols is the collapse of gas bubbles at the water surface. In this paper, we discuss the potential influence of biological factors on gas ebullition in the water areas of the radioactively contaminated industrial reservoirs R-9 (Lake Karachay) and R-4 (Metlinsky pond) of the Mayak PA. The emission of the released non-dissolved gases captured with gas traps in reservoir R-9 was (88–290) ml/m2 per day (2015) and in reservoir R-4 (270–460) ml/m2 per day (2016). The analysis of gas composition in reservoir R-4 (60% methane, 35% nitrogen, 2.4% oxygen, 1.5% carbon dioxide) confirms their biological origin. It is associated with the processes of organic matter destruction in bottom sediments. The major source of organic matter in bottom sediments is the dying phytoplankton developing in these reservoirs. Conclusion: The obtained results form the basis to set a task to quantify the relationship between the phytoplankton development, gases ebullition and radioactive atmosphere contamination.

Aerosol size distributions near biomass-burning sources undergo rapid evolution, primarily due to coagulation, which significantly alters the particle number size distribution. Existing long-range aerosol transport and climate prediction models often overlook near-source dynamics involving simultaneous coagulation and dispersion. To bridge this gap, the present study introduces a coagulation-dispersion model and provides semi-analytical solutions for the effective size distribution parameters. The precise solution for a diffusion-less coagulating plume with spatially varying particle concentration supports the conceptual accuracy of the semi-analytical parameterization for dispersion-coagulation model. These solutions form the basis for a parameterization scheme that considers input parameters such as source dimensions, particle mass flux, particle size, and atmospheric conditions. Utilizing this parameterization for case-specific biomass burning emissions shows a decrease in number emission rate by approximately a factor of 600, while the count median diameter of the initial size distribution increases by around 7 times. Additionally, we estimate the optical properties of aerosols both before and after the introduction of the near-source parameterization scheme. Results indicate an increase by a factor of 4 in the aerosol extinction coefficient and by a factor of ∼20 in the scattering coefficient, which will significantly influence the calculation of aerosol optical properties in global models. These changes in optical properties primarily stem from modifications in aerosol size distribution resulting from near-source aerosol dynamics. The results are further discussed.

ABSTRACT: Lameness disease attributed to bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis in broilers affects production, animal welfare, and food safety in the poultry industry. The disease is characterized by necrotic degeneration of the rapidly growing femora and tibiae due to bacterial translocation from the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts into the blood circulation, eventually colonizing the growth plate of the long bones. To investigate the etiology, pathogenesis, and intervention measures for BCO, developing an experimental model that reliably induces BCO lameness is of the utmost importance. In the past, we have employed a wire-flooring model and a litter-flooring model administered with a bacterial challenge to investigate strategies for mitigating BCO. However, multiple issues on labor-intensive barn setup and cleanout efforts for the wire-flooring system and concern of direct pathogenic exposure to the broilers for the litter-flooring models rendered these research models less effective. Thus, we investigated a new approach to induce experimental BCO lameness using an aerosol transmission model employing a group of birds reared on wire-flooring pens as a BCO infection source, and the disease is further disseminated through the airborne transmission to other birds reared on litter flooring in the same housing environment. The effectiveness of the aerosol transmission model in inducing BCO lameness was concluded from 4 independent experiments. The cumulative lameness generated from the BCO source group on the wire floors versus negative control treatments on the litter floors from Experiments 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 84% vs. 69.33%, P = 0.09; 54.55% vs. 60%, P = 0.56; 78% vs. 73.50%, P = 0.64; 81% vs. 74.50%, P = 0.11. Overall, the cumulative lameness generated from the wire floors was successfully transmitted to the birds on litter floors without significant statistical differences (P > 0.05). The effectiveness of the aerosol transmission model for experimentally triggering BCO lameness provides a reliable system for evaluating practical intervention strategies for BCO lameness in broilers.

The evaluation of airborne pathogens diffusion is a crucial practice in preventing airborne diseases like COVID-19, especially in indoor environments. Through this transmission route, pathogens can be carried by droplets, droplet nuclei and aerosols and be conveyed over long distances. Therefore, understanding their diffusion is vital for prevention and curbing disease transmission. There are different techniques used for this purpose, and one of the most common is the utilization of tracer gas, however, it has limitations such as the difference in size between the gas molecules and the respiratory droplets, as well as its incapability to take into account evaporation. For this reason, a new method for evaluating the diffusion of respiratory droplets has been developed. This approach involves the use of an ultrasonic emitter to release and disperse pigmented aerosols, and a colorimeter for the following quantitative evaluation. A comparison with the tracer gas technique has been carried out, showing for the pigmented aerosols methodology a response that is dependent on different relative humidity conditions, while there is no clear difference in the dispersion of tracer gas at high or low humidity.

Acoustic agglomeration is a technique that leverages on sound waves to promote the collision of aerosol particulate matter, thus leading to the formation of larger particle agglomerates. In this study, this acoustics-driven phenomenon is demonstrated for its usefulness as an aerosol pre-conditioning method to significantly enhance the efficiency of filtration systems in particle treatment processes. Specifically, favorable changes in pressure drop across the filters are observed as a result of receiving less particle mass, for which filters are shown to be able to have their operational life extended remarkably by more than 50%. The involved ultrasonic aerosol agglomeration mechanisms are unveiled through numerical simulations, and the effects of residence time, sound pressure level, and initial particle number concentration on agglomeration performances are experimentally investigated. In addition, validations and measurements of filter pressure drop are obtained through a series of experiments. This study provides a comprehensive overview to the design and performance characterization of acoustics-agglomeration-enhanced filtration systems, which could potentially derive energy savings for fan power in ventilation systems and be scaled up for applications in industrial plants for reducing carbon emissions.

Herein, novel composite aerosol filters solely comprising renewable materials were designed using gelatin as a reinforcement agent and aqueous tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) as a dispersing medium for the cellulose nanofiber skeleton. The prepared composite cryogels exhibited distinct spider-web-like crosslinked structures and nanoporous architectures with porosity exceeding 98.8 % and density of less than 0.018 g/cm3. These composite filters exhibited high filtration efficiency and a robust and flexible mechanical structure due to gelatin reinforcement; furthermore, their quality factor exceeded the target threshold of 0.01 Pa−1 for 300 nm particle size. The filtration performance and mechanical properties of the composite filters could be tailored by adjusting the cellulose nanofiber (CNF), gelatin, and TBA contents, enabling the preparation of cryogels with a firm and strong structure. This study introduces ultraporous solids based on nanocellulose (NC) cryogels, which are promising, novel, and green materials for the production of advanced high-performance filter media for aerosol separation. Furthermore, the aforementioned approach is promising for the preparation of mechanically robust nanoporous biomaterials suitable for diverse applications such as heat and thermal insulation.

Surgical smoke is a byproduct of aerosols containing several components produced by energy equipment. The characteristics of surgical smoke components produced by different types of tissues or using different kinds of energy devices vary. For example, the average diameter of smoke particles produced by electrocautery is smaller, and the possibility of viable cells and pathogens in surgical smoke produced by an ultrasonic knife is higher. According to the characteristics of its composition, surgical smoke may be an important risk factor affecting the health and safety of operating room staff and patients. The use of surgical masks, suction devices and portable smoke evacuation systems can reduce this risk to some extent. However, most operating room staff members do not implement corresponding measures to protect themselves. In this paper, the characteristics of surgical smoke and the research progress in protective measures are briefly reviewed.

Nuclear safety is the lifeline for the development and application of nuclear energy. In severe accidents of pressurized water reactor (PWR), aerosols, as the main carrier of fission products, are suspended in the containment vessel, posing a potential threat of radioactive contamination caused by leakage into the environment. The gas-phase aerosols suspended in the containment will settle onto the wall or sump water through the natural deposition mechanism, thereby reducing atmospheric radioactivity. Aiming at the low accuracy of the aerosol model in the ISAA code, this paper improves the natural deposition model of aerosol in the containment. The aerosol dynamic shape factor was introduced to correct the natural deposition rate of non-spherical aerosols. Moreover, the gravity, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis deposition models were improved. In addition, ABCOVE, AHMED and LACE experiments were selected to validate and evaluate the improved ISAA code. According to the calculation results, the improved model can more accurately simulate the peak aerosol mass and respond to the influence of the containment pressure and temperature on the natural deposition rate of aerosols. At the same time, it can significantly improve the calculation accuracy of the residual mass of aerosols in the containment. The performance of improved ISAA can meet the requirements for analyzing the natural deposition behavior of aerosol in containment of advanced PWRs in severe accident. In the future, further optimization will be made to address the problems found in the current aerosol model.

Vegetation in China has experienced significant improvements under the combined effects of human activities and climate change. However, when exploring the effects of climate change on vegetation dynamics, existing studies mainly focus on two meteorological factors (temperature and precipitation) and rarely consider aerosol optical depth (AOD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Therefore, in this study, we further explored the potential dependence of leaf area index (LAI) on temperature (Tem), precipitation (Pre), AOD, and PAR, based on the analysis of the spatiotemporal variations of LAI in different vegetation types in China. Results showed that the LAI increased significantly from 2001 to 2020, with an overall growth rate of 0.0202/yr; the response of LAI for different vegetation types to each influencing factor varied greatly, and the deciduous broadleaf forests were more sensitive to climate change. Quantitative analysis based on the GeoDetector method showed that the most important driving force of LAI change is Pre (0.596); while Tem (0.394) and AOD (0.325) showed similar effects; by contrast, PAR (0.279) had the lowest driving force on LAI. Among them, the change of Pre is the dominant factor affecting LAI for most vegetation types. From the perspective of regional research, we found that the increase of LAI in the South was greater than that in North China, while human activities (urbanization) were unfavorable to the increase of LAI, such as the Yangtze River Delta where the LAI decreased significantly. This study contributes to a better understanding of the response of different vegetation types to climate and atmospheric changes in China over the past 20 years and provides a scientific reference for developing and implementing ecological restoration measures and promoting sustainable development. Overall, China is 'turning green', and air quality is improving.

For the accurate modeling and simulation of the flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) process, all the essential phenomena need to be taken into account. A validated model could then be used for process optimization and design with reasonably reduced costs. In that sense, this work uses a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a population balance model (PBM) to investigate the influence of thermophoresis and other parameters (related to sintering and turbulent particle diffusion) in the final produced particle size. This work simulates the flame spray using CFD under an Eulerian–Lagrangian framework. Furthermore, a monodisperse solver for a bivariate PBM is implemented into ANSYS Fluent to simulate the formation and evolution of nanoparticles inside the reactor. We investigate the production of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles and use experimental data from the literature for model validation. The model produces accurate results for some of the investigated cases.

With the improvement of laser technology, the strategic needs of efficient and precise decontamination of various components in nuclear application units can be fulfilled by laser decontamination. The surface contaminants of nuclear facilities mainly exist both as loose contaminated layer and fixed oxide layer. The types of radionuclides and contamination layer thickness are closely related to the operation status of nuclear facilities, which have an important influence on the laser decontamination process. This study reviewed the mechanism of laser surface treatment and the influence of laser process parameters on the decontamination thickness, decontamination factor, decontamination efficiency and the distribution of aerosol particle. Although multiple studies have been performed on the mechanism of laser processing and laser decontamination process, there are few studies on the microscopic process mechanism of laser decontamination and the influence of laser decontamination on surface properties. In particular, the interaction between laser and radioactive contaminants needs more research in the future.

Objectives: This study assessed the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in the air of hospital rooms occupied by patients with COVID-19 who had viable SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal (NP) samples in early infection. Methods: Between July and October 2021, NP swabs were collected from 20 patients with early SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to a tertiary hospital in Japan. Air samples were collected from their rooms, tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA, and cultured to determine potential infectivity. Results: The NP swab samples of 18 patients were positive for viable SARS-CoV-2 (median concentration: 4.0 × 105 tissue culture infectious dose 50/ml). In the air samples, viral RNA (median concentration: 1.1 × 105 copies/m3) was detected in 12/18 (67%) patients, and viable virus (median concentration: 8.9 × 102 tissue culture infectious dose 50/m3) was detected in 5/18 (28%) patients. The median time between illness onset and sampling was 3 days. The RNA concentration was significantly higher in samples wherein viable SARS-CoV-2 was detected than in samples in which viable virus was not detected (P-value = 0.027). Conclusion: Viable SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in the air surrounding patients with early SARS-CoV-2 infection. Health care workers should pay attention to infection control when caring for patients with early SARS-CoV-2 infection.

ABSTRACT: Objective: Since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, aerosol control in the operatory has become a key safety issue in dentistry. The utilisation of extraoral scavenger devices (EOSs) is one of the various approaches to in-treatment aerosol reduction in dentistry. The use and efficacy of EOSs in dental settings, however, are still a matter of debate in the literature and there are still open questions about their proper use. Thus, research into this area is essential to inform dental practice. The objective of this study was to examine the aerosol reduction efficacy of two different EOS in vitro. Methods: Two commercially available EOSs were tested during modeled dental treatment in a setup that previously proved to generate high aerosol load. Measurements were done in two particle size ranges: 5.6–560 nm (the full range of the spectrometer) and 60.4–392.4 nm (a range that is especially relevant to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 with aerosol). Results: Both devices managed to reduce the aerosol load to a statistically significant extent as compared to the scenario when only a high-volume evacuator and a saliva ejector (and no EOS) were used. Conclusions: Within the limitations of the study, the results support the assumption that EOSs for aerosol reduction increase in-treatment safety in the dental operatory.

A non-filter virus inactivation unit was developed that can control the irradiation dose of aerosolized viruses by controlling the lighting pattern of a 280 nm deep-UV (DUV)-LED and the air flowrate. In this study, the inactivation properties of aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 were quantitatively evaluated by controlling the irradiation dose to the virus inside the inactivation unit. The RNA concentration of SARS-CoV-2 remained constant when the total irradiation dose of DUV irradiation to the virus exceeded 16.5 mJ/cm2. This observation suggests that RNA damage may occur in regions below the detection threshold of RT-qPCR assay. However, when the total irradiation dose was less than 16.5 mJ/cm2, the RNA concentration monotonically increased with a decreasing LED irradiation dose. However, the nucleocapsid protein concentration of SARS-CoV-2 was not predominantly dependent on the LED irradiation dose. The plaque assay showed that 99.16% of the virus was inactivated at 8.1 mJ/cm2 of irradiation, and no virus was detected at 12.2 mJ/cm2 of irradiation, resulting in a 99.89% virus inactivation rate. Thus, an irradiation dose of 23% of the maximal irradiation capacity of the virus inactivation unit can activate more than 99% of SARS-CoV-2. These findings are expected to enhance versatility in various applications. The downsizing achieved in our study renders the technology apt for installation in narrow spaces, while the enhanced flowrates establish its viability for implementation in larger facilities.

Aerosols are one of the important atmospheric constituents and exert indirect impact on climate through the modification of microphysical and radiative properties of clouds that in turn perturb the precipitation pattern. Thus, the long term quantification of changes in aerosol and cloud characteristics and their interactions on both temporal as well as spatial scale will provide a crucial information for the better assessment of future climate change. In present study, 18 years (2003–2020) MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) derived aerosol-cloud dataset over the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO) were analysed to assess climatology and trend of aerosol, cloud characteristics and their correlation. We found a strong heterogeneity in spatio-temporal variation of aerosol and cloud parameters over the NIO that are more prominent for the coastal region. The climatological mean of aerosol loading is found high (AOD ≥ 0.5) over the outflow region along the Indian sub-continent and low (AOD ≤ 0.2) over the northern equatorial open ocean. The climatological mean of cloud properties shows dominance of optically thicker deep convective (CTP 700 hPa and CTT > 273 K) over the northwestern Arabian Sea (AS). Similarly, bigger effective radii (>17 µm) observed along the equatorial open ocean whereas smaller CER (0.003 yr−1) suggesting a significant impact of sub-continental outflow over the regions. The spatial correlation of cloud properties with respect to AOD shows a positive slope for CER (0.14) and CF (0.48) and a negative for COD (−0.19), LWP (−0.18), CTT (−0.37), CTP (−0.41). The present study provides in-depth information about the aerosol-cloud characteristics for a long term scale over NIO and could be useful in regional aerosol-cloud interaction induced climate forcing estimation.

Soot formation in combustion is an important process that affects radiative heat transfer, flame temperatures, and emissions with health and environmental impacts. Soot formation involves complex chemistry for nucleation, growth, oxidation, and coagulation processes. The soot particles vary widely in size and accurate modeling requires representation of the particle size distribution (PSD). Modeling soot is not trivial, and is only one of several physical processes active in combustion systems. This paper presents a software package called SootLib, which is an open-source library for modeling soot formation and other aerosol systems. SootLib is written in C++, is documented with Doxygen, and is available on GitHub. The library includes several models for soot chemistry and coagulation, and it represents the PSD using either a sectional model or the method of moments (MOM). Four closure approaches for the MOM are implemented allowing up to eight moments: monodispersed, an assumed-shape lognormal distribution, the quadrature method of moments, and the method of moments with interpolative closure. SootLib provides an interface for inclusion in other combustion packages including CFD or reacting flow solvers. The range of models allows comparisons and sensitivity studies, and the modularity facilitates extension to other soot models.

Since December 2019, the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has become a global pandemic. Understanding the role of environmental conditions is important in impeding the spread of COVID-19. Given that airborne spread and contact transmission are considered the main pathways for the spread of COVID-19, this narrative review first summarized the role of temperature and humidity in the airborne trajectory of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Meanwhile, we reviewed the persistence of the virus in aerosols and on inert surfaces and summarized how the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 is affected by temperature and humidity. We also examined the existing epidemiological evidence and addressed the limitations of these epidemiological studies. Although uncertainty remains, more evidence may support the idea that high temperature is slightly and negatively associated with COVID-19 growth, while the conclusion for humidity is still conflicting. Nonetheless, the spread of COVID-19 appears to have been controlled primarily by government interventions rather than environmental factors.

Background: In the strive towards a circular economy, metal waste recycling is a growing industry. During the recycling process, particulate matter containing toxic and allergenic metals will be emitted to the air causing unintentional exposure to humans and environment. Objective: In this study detailed characterization of particle emissions and workplace exposures were performed, covering the full size range from 10 nm to 10 µm, during recycling of three different material flows: Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), metal scrap, and cables. Methods: Both direct-reading instruments (minute resolution), and time-integrated filter measurements for gravimetric and chemical analysis were used. Additionally, optical sensors were applied and evaluated for long-term online monitoring of air quality in industrial settings. Results: The highest concentrations, in all particle sizes, and with respect both to particle mass and number, were measured in the WEEE flow, followed by the metal scrap flow. The number fraction of nanoparticles was high for all material flows (0.66–0.86). The most abundant metals were Fe, Al, Zn, Pb and Cu. Other elements of toxicological interest were Mn, Ba and Co. Significance: The large fraction of nanoparticles, and the fact that their chemical composition deviate from that of the coarse particles, raises questions that needs to be further addressed including toxicological implications, both for humans and for the environment.

The currently available nebulization devices have a slow aerosol flow and produce vapor with large microdrops. Improved devices that achieve higher airflow and produce smaller microdrops are needed to improve the clinical care of patients. To address this critical need, we developed a novel system for the molecular vaporization of liquids. This device vaporizes an active pharmacological substance dissolved in water, alcohol, or a mixture of water and alcohol using two energy sources at the same time: high-frequency ultrasound and thermal induction. Application of energy to a solution contained in the device’s tank allows, within tens of seconds, for the vaporization of the solution itself, with the generation of a vapor consisting of microdrops of very small diameter (0.2–0.3 μm). In this article, we illustrate the technology used, the main verification tests performed, and the primary fields of application for this device. In particular, the advantages of both the aerosol delivery system and the administration system are highlighted.

ABSTRACT: Aims: The objective of the present study was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosol and COVID-19 contamination distance asssociated with ultrasonic scaling and tooth preparation. Methods: Twenty-four patients with COVID-19 were included in this study. Removal of supragingival plaque with ultrasonic instruments for 10 minutes and high-speed air-turbine using for the simulation of cutting the maxillary right canine tooth with a round diamond bur for 5 minutes were performed. Patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: In group A, medium-volume suction was used during treatment. In group B, high-volume suction with an aerosol cannula was added to medium-volume suction. Prior to treatment, 5 glass petri dishes containing viral transport medium were placed in the operating room. After treatment, petri dishes were immediately delivered to a microbiology laboratory for real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. Results: RT-PCR test results were negative for all specimens in group B. However, 5 positive test results for COVID-19 were detected in group A specimens. Conclusions: Suction with an aerosol cannula is very important to prevent COVID-19 viral contamination via aerosol. In addition, a high-volume suction capacity (air volume) of 150 mm Hg or 325 L/min is sufficient for elimination of viral contamination. Thus, high-volume suction should be used during dental treatments in COVID-19 patients.

Airborne SARS-CoV-2 transmission represents a significant route for possible human infection that is not yet fully understood. Viruses in droplets and aerosols are difficult to detect because they are typically present in low amounts. In addition, the current techniques used, such as RT-PCR and virus culturing, require large amounts of time to get results. Biosensor technology can provide rapid, handheld, and point-of-care systems that can identify virus presence quickly and accurately. This paper reviews the background of airborne virus transmission and the characteristics of SARS-CoV-2, its relative risk for transmission even at distances greater than the currently suggested 6 feet (or 2 m) physical distancing. Publications on biosensor technology that may be applied to the detection of airborne SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses are also summarized. Based on the current research we believe that there is a pressing need for continued research into handheld and rapid methods for sensitive collection and detection of airborne viruses. We propose a paper-based microfluidic chip and immunofluorescence assay as one method that could be investigated as a low-cost and portable option.

Filter media made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filters are known to be incompatible with poly-alpha-olefin or any oil-based challenge particles, and thus, filters made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene had limited use in pharmaceutical applications. The benefits of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filters, e.g. intrinsic durability, more energy-efficient, chemical inertness, etc., are therefore not being fully utilized. A new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filter media compatible with poly-alpha-olefin particles was then developed by a filter manufacturer. The goal of this study is to investigate the filtration performance and characteristics of the new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene media and to compare it with the conventional expanded polytetrafluoroethylene media. In this study, four pleated high-efficiency particulate air filters made of either the conventional or the new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene media, and either of the two variants of pleat depths (36 mm and 31 mm) were tested under two different challenge tests, one using potassium chloride (KCl) salt particles and the other using poly-alpha-olefin particles. Both challenge particles are submicron and polydisperse. The collection efficiency, pressure drop, and dust holding capacity were measured in both tests. Due to the sensitivity of KCl particle release to environmental factors, a repeatability test was also performed for the KCl test. poly-alpha-olefin test results show that the new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filter performed remarkably better than the conventional expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filter, achieving a high amount of dust retention at the same preset final pressure drop.

Significance: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become a popular way to smoke all over the world. Chronic exposure to e-cigarette aerosol may influence lung health. This study uses an animal model to explore the time course of the effect of exposure to e-cigarette aerosols on the lung. Methods: Lung samples were collected after exposure of Balb/c mice to e-cigarette aerosols for 1 h/day (6 times/week) for 1, 2 and 4 weeks and compared to sham-exposed controls. Examined biomarkers including inflammatory cells, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Harmful algal blooms plague bodies of freshwater globally. These blooms are often composed of outgrowths of cyanobacteria capable of producing the heptapeptide Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) which is a well-known hepatotoxin. Recently, MC-LR has been detected in aerosols generated from lake water. However, the risk for human health effects due to MC-LR inhalation exposure have not been extensively investigated. In this study, we exposed a fully differentiated 3D human airway epithelium derived from 14 healthy donors to MC-LR-containing aerosol once a day for 3 days. Concentrations of MC-LR ranged from 100 pM to 1 µM. Although there were little to no detrimental alterations in measures of the airway epithelial function (i.e. cell survival, tissue integrity, mucociliary clearance, or cilia beating frequency), a distinct shift in the transcriptional activity was found. Genes related to inflammation were found to be upregulated such as C-C motif chemokine 5 (CCL5; log2FC = 0.57, p = 0.03) and C-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CCR7; log2FC = 0.84, p = 0.03). Functionally, conditioned media from MC-LR exposed airway epithelium was also found to have significant chemo-attractive properties for primary human neutrophils. Additionally, increases were found in the concentration of secreted chemokine proteins in the conditioned media such as CCL1 (log2FC = 5.07, p = 0.0001) and CCL5 (log2FC = 1.02, p = 0.046). These results suggest that MC-LR exposure to the human airway epithelium is capable of inducing an inflammatory response that may potentiate acute or chronic disease.

COVID-19 pandemic has forced to lockdown entire India starting from 24th March 2020 to 14th April 2020 (first phase), extended up to 3rd May 2020 (second phase), and further extended up to 17th May 2020 (third phase) with limited relaxation in non-hotspot areas. This strict lockdown has severely curtailed human activity across India. Here, aerosol concentrations of particular matters (PM) i.e., PM10, PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3) and ozone (O3), and associated temperature fluctuation in four megacities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai) from different regions of India were investigated. In this pandemic period, air temperature of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai has decreased about 3 °C, 2.5 °C, 2 °C and 2 °C respectively. Compared to previous years and pre-lockdown period, air pollutants level and aerosol concentration (−41.91%, −37.13%, −54.94% and −46.79% respectively for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai) in these four megacities has improved drastically during this lockdown period. Emission of PM2.5 has experienced the highest decrease in these megacities, which directly shows the positive impact of restricted vehicular movement. Restricted emissions produce encouraging results in terms of urban air quality and temperature, which may encourage policymakers to consider it in terms of environmental sustainability.

We employed an enhanced WRF-Chem to investigate the discrete mechanisms of aerosol-radiation-feedback (ARF), extinction-photochemistry (AEP), and heterogeneous-reactions (AHR) across different seasons in eastern China, aiming to assess the synergistic effects arising from the simultaneous operation of multiple processes on O 3 and PM 2.5 . Our findings demonstrated that ARF fostered the accumulation of pollutants and moisture, initiating two distinct feedback mechanisms concerning O 3 . The elevation in the NO/NO 2 ratio amplified O 3 consumption. Increased near-surface moisture diminished upper-level cloud formation, thereby enhancing photolysis rates and O 3 photochemical production. The pronounced impact of heightened NO/NO 2 on O 3 led to a decrease of 0.1-2.7 ppb. When decoupled from ARF, AEP led to a more significant reduction in photolysis rates, resulting in declines in both O 3 and PM 2.5 , except for an anomalous increase observed in summer, with O 3 increasing by 1.6 ppb and PM 2.5 by 2.5 μg m -3 . The heterogeneous absorption of hydroxides in spring, autumn, and winter predominantly governed the AHR-induced variation of O 3 , leading to a decrease in O 3 by 0.7-1 ppb. Conversely, O 3 variations in summer were primarily dictated by O 3 -sensitive chemistry, with heterogeneous absorption of NO y catalyzing a decrease of 2.4 ppb in O 3 . Furthermore, AHR accentuated PM 2.5 by facilitating the formation of fine sulfates and ammonium while impeding nitrate formation. In summer, the collective impact of ARF, AEP, and AHR (ALL) led to a substantial reduction of 6.2 ppb in O 3 , alleviating the secondary oxidation of PM 2.5 and leading to a decrease of 0.3 μg m -3 in PM 2.5 . Conversely, albeit aerosol substantially depleted O 3 by 0.4-4 ppb through their interactions except for summer, aerosol feedback on PM 2.5 was more pronounced, resulting in a significant increase of 1.7-6.1 μg m -3 in PM 2.5 . Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals", are a class of man-made, extremely stable chemicals, which are widely used in industrial and commercial applications. Exposure to some PFAS is now known to be detrimental to human health. By virtue of PFAS long residence times, they are widely detected in the environment, including remote locations such as the Arctics, where the origin of the PFAS is poorly understood. It has been suggested that PFAS may be transported through contaminated waters, leading to accumulation in coastal areas, where they can be aerosolised via sea spray, thereby extending their geographical distribution far beyond their original source regions. The aim of this work is to investigate, for the first time, whether "forever chemicals" could be transported to areas considered to be pristine, far from coastal sites. This study was performed at the Amazonian Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), a unique remote site situated in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, where a restricted PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), was observed with concentrations reaching up to 2 pg/m 3 . A clear trend of increasing concentration with sampling height was observed and air masses from the south over Manaus had the highest concentrations. Atmospheric lifetime estimations, removal mechanisms supported by measurements at two heights (320 and 42 m above the rainforest), and concentration spikes indicated a long-range transport of PFOA to pristine Amazon rainforest. Potential sources, including industrial activities in urban areas, were explored, and historical fire management practices considered. This research presents the first measurements of PFAS in the atmosphere of Amazon rainforest. Remarkably, even in this remote natural environment, appreciable levels of PFAS can be detected. Advancement of the absorbent for CO 2 capture is essential in optimizing the performance and reducing the negative environmental effects associated with this technology. Despite ammonia's promise as an absorbent, the volatility limits its practical application and creates potential environmental pollution. Therein, we assess various additives (amino acids, carbonates, and alkanolamines) for ammonia-based solvents using multi-stage circulation absorber from the viewpoints of aerosol emission, ammonia emission, and CO 2 capture efficiency. Experimental findings reveal that ammonia volatilization can be inhibited by the protonation of free ammonia by carboxyl groups and the formation of hydrogen bonding between amino/hydroxyl groups and ammonia, with ammonia emission reduced by 21.7 %, aerosol emission reduced by 26.5 %, and CO 2 capture efficiency increased to a maximum of 87.8 % under the condition of adding histidine. Moreover, the experiment highlights a positive correlation between total ammonia emission and aerosol concentration/diameter. Additionally, tests combining source abatement with water wash exhibit up to 50.5 % aerosol removal efficiency and up to 76.6 % ammonia removal efficiency. To further mitigate emissions, a comprehensive approach is proposed, achieving an 84.4 % reduction in ammonia emission and a 61.9 % reduction in aerosol emission. Transmission of airborne infectious diseases poses great risk for public health and socio-economic stability, thus, there is a need for an effective control method targeting the spread and transmission of pathogenic aerosols. The existence of chemically-reductive trace air contaminants in animal agriculture may affect the oxidation inactivation process of pathogens. In this study, we report how the presence of such gasses impacts the effectiveness of using non-thermal plasma (NTP) within a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge reactor to inactivate MS2 bacteriophage. Inactivation of the aerosolized bacteriophage is determined by the combination of viability and polymerase chain reaction assays. Using a plasma power source with a voltage of 20 kV and frequency of 350 Hz, after differentiating and excluding the physical removal effects of viral aerosols potentially caused by plasma, the baseline inactivation of MS2 aerosol in air has been determined based on an overall air flow rate of 200 Liters per minute and plasma discharge power of 1.8 W. When either ammonia or hydrogen sulfide gas is introduced into the airstream at a concentration of 1 part per million, the NTP virus inactivation efficiency is reduced to around 0.5-log from the 1-log baseline inactivation in air alone. In recent years, a series of public health issues caused by the spread of antibiotic resistance have been widely concerned. The indoor air of livestock and poultry houses is considered to be one of the main sources of environmental contamination of ARGs. This study characterized the micro-organisms and ARGs in the air particulate matter of chicken houses using metagenomics. The study successfully detected 761 different subtypes of resistance genes including aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, MLSB etc., 4 types of mobile genetic elements, and various pathogenic microorganisms from the aerosols in the chicken coop environment. Mie Scattering Light Detection and Ranging (Mie-Lidar) is the most frequently used tool for obtaining the vertical profile of aerosol extinction coefficients. However, Mie-Lidar has an area that is not fully overlapping (called a transition zone) several hundred meters above the ground. There is uncertainty, although a geometric overlap factor (GOF) correction is normally used. To specifically evaluate the error of Mie-Lidar in the transition zone, a dual charge-coupled device (CCD) laser system (DCLS) is developed in this study. Multiple joint measurements as well as a continuous detection experiment are conducted. The extinction coefficient profiles obtained with the DCLS and Mie-Lidar are compared. The results indicate that the extinction coefficients are nearly consistent above the transition zone, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient remains above 0.9. However, the extinction coefficients have specific differences in the transition zone, and the linear fit results are relatively bad. The average relative difference of the extinction coefficients between the Mie-Lidar and DCLS is nearly 20%. Compared Mie-Lidar, the blind zone of the DCLS is merely approximately 8 m. The DCLS shows more details of the near-surface atmosphere, and its spatial resolution of up to 1 × 10–3 m can provide a useful reference for Mie-Lidar. The DCLS contributes to obtaining a more accurate vertical distribution of aerosols in the atmospheric boundary layer.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of aerosol-based transmission of human pathogens; this therefore calls for novel medical devices which are able to sterilize contaminated aerosols. Here we describe a new laser device able to sterilize droplets containing either viruses or bacteria. Using engineered viral particles, we determined the 10,600 nm wavelength as the most efficient and exploitable laser source to be manufactured in a commercial device. Given the lack of existing working models to reproduce a human aerosol containing living microbial particles, we developed a new system mimicking human droplet formation and preserving bacterial and viral viability. This evidenced the efficacy of 10,600 nm laser light to kill two aerosol transmitted human pathogens, Legionella pneumophila and SARS-CoV-2. The minimal exposure time of

Investigation results of a coarse and accumulation mode of aerosol properties above the Baltic Sea are reported. A most important role in the direct aerosol effect on climate have aerosols from the group of coarse and accumulation mode particles. Overseas in the atmosphere, there is a lot of aerosols from the fine fraction but their impact is not so important as coarse and accumulation mode particles. Sea spray emission from the sea surface takes place over a wide range of aerosol particle size distribution, it is also large in size range which are studying in this work (Lewis and Schwartz, 2004). The discussed range is most important in view of atmospheric optical properties, smaller particles do not have such an influence on scattering as particles from range 0.5–2 µm. The research was performed with a multiwavelength lidar. Due to the application of special software, the aerosol particle size distributions were retrieved from the lidar returns. That provided an opportunity to determine the profiles of the aerosol effective radius. We showed that the aerosol properties depend mainly on the direction of the air mass advection and the wind speed. The impact of the Baltic Sea on the aerosol size distribution is huge in the case of the advection from the open sea. Moreover, the aerosol effective radiuses in the whole boundary layer are much larger in the case of strong than for light wind. Our results suggest that the aerosol flux and the aerosol particle size distribution should be related to the wind speed in the emission function.

Pediatric dental emergency management were temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, which worsened urgent dental needs. This retrospective study investigated the management of pediatric emergencies during COVID-19 lockdown and the trends in parental preferences from March to July in 2019 and 2020. Pediatric dental emergencies managed during pandemic was collated, procedures were categorized (emergency, restorative, preventive, elective) and trends in parental treatment preference was compared from March-July 2019/2020. Bivariate analysis was performed using fisher-exact test and statistical significance was set at 5%. Total 1081 children were treated during COVID-19 lockdown, and 1509 procedures were performed, of which 20.8% were emergency, 42% restorative, 24.4% preventive, 12.6% elective. In 2019, 7462 children were treated; and except for emergency (10.6%), other procedures were comparable to 2020. Extractions (267) predominated in 2020 followed by sealants (195); but in 2019, pulectomy (1268), scaling (1251) were predominant. None of the residents who performed aerosol procedures got infected with COVID-19 during the lockdown. Emergency dental needs among pediatric patients were very high during the COVID-19 pandemic in South India, and there was not much change in the trend in parental treatment preference in 2019 and 2020. Further, aerosol procedures did not increase the risk of COVID-19 during the pandemic provided proper universal precautions were followed.

Background: Scientists have strongly implied that aerosols could be the plausible cause of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) transmission; however, aerosol transmission remains controversial. The study: We investigated the epidemiological relationship among infected cases on a recent cluster infection of COVID-19 in an apartment building in Seoul, South Korea. All infected cases were found along two vertical lines of the building, and each line was connected through a single air duct in the bathroom for natural ventilation. Our investigation found no other possible contact between the cases than the airborne infection through a single air duct in the bathroom. The virus from the first infected case can be spread to upstairs and downstairs through the air duct by the (reverse) stack effect, which explains the air movement in a vertical shaft. Conclusions: This study suggests aerosol transmission, particularly indoors with insufficient ventilation, which is underappreciated.

ABSTRACT: The virucidal activities were evaluated by spraying slightly acidic hypochlorous acid waters (SAHWs) containing various concentrations of free available chlorine - 100, 200, 300 and 500 ppm (SAHW-100, -200, -300 and -500, respectively) - toward aerosol of an avian coronavirus (infectious bronchitis virus: IBV). The viral solution was supplemented with 0.5% fetal bovine serum (FBS) to simulate normal human droplets generated by sneezing or coughing in a real-life scenario. The virus containing 0.5% FBS was sprayed and exposed to SAHWs for a few seconds in a closed chamber, before reaching the air sampler. The results showed that IBV exposed to SAHW-100 and -200 for a few seconds decreased by 0.21 log10 and 0.80 log10, respectively, compared to the pre-exposed samples to SAHWs as controls. On the other hand, reductions of 1.16 log10 and 1.67 log10 were achieved following the exposure to SAHW-300 and -500, respectively, within a few seconds. These results suggest that SAHWs have rapid in vitro virucidal activity toward aerosolized IBV. The findings obtained for IBV might basically be applicable in relation to SARS-CoV-2, given the resemblance between the two viruses. To prevent human-to-human transmissions by aerosols, the inactivation of viruses in the air by exposure to SAHWs for a few seconds seems to be an effective way.

Facemasks are one of the most effective and low-cost prophylactics for COVID-19. In the spring 2020, when a severe shortage of facemasks occurred worldwide, various types of 3D-printed masks were designed and proposed. However, the protective effects conferred by most of these masks were not experimentally evaluated. Here, we provide a new simple design of 3D-printed mask and evaluate its protective effect in a viral filtration test using a human head mannequin. The developed mask can be constructed with a low-cost 3D printer, with an approximate production cost of US $4. This mask has three parts: the main part, wearing parts, and a piece of non-woven fabric filter. The volume of the filter, which needs to be changed daily, was reduced to approximately 1/10 of that of commercially available surgical masks used in this study. The developed mask is fabricated from polylactic acid, a biodegradable plastic, and its surface contour contacting the face may be adjusted after softening the material with hot water at 60–80 °C. The viral filtration efficiency of the developed mask was found to be over 80%. This performance is better than that of commercially available facemasks, such as surgical masks and cloth masks, and equal to those of KN95 and KF94.

Aerosol-cloud interactions play a vital role in climate change. This study leverages observations from the King-350 aircraft over the North China Plain on November 29, 2019, to examine aerosol and cloud microphysical characteristics of mixed-phase clouds. Through detailed vertical and spectral distributions, we investigate aerosol, cloud droplet, and ice crystal distributions in seeded clouds (SC) and natural precipitating clouds (NPC) within the same cloud system. From the vertical profile, SC and NPC have similar vertical distributions of aerosol and cloud droplets, with over 95 % of aerosols concentrated below 1600 m near the ground. Cloud droplets are more evenly distributed within the two clouds, cloud droplet number concentrations (N c ) in SC were three orders of magnitude higher than in NPC. Ice water content (IWC) and ice crystal number concentration (N i ) show distinct layer preferences-accumulating predominantly in SC's top layer and NPC's middle layer. From spectral distribution, a smaller proportion of cloud droplets (40-50 μm in diameter, the same hereafter) in SC compared to NPC. Rimed ice crystals and globular graupel (1325-1550 μm in diameter) were in SC, while plate and irregular ice crystals (300-450 μm) were in NPC with an order of magnitude higher than in SC. These microphysical differences highlight the complexity of cloud seeding efficacy, which varies based on cloud conditions and microphysical properties. In the first seeding, Ni increased by 1-2 orders of magnitude (125-300 μm) in the high Nc (N c  > 1.11 × 10 5  L -1 ) region. Seeding in low N c (N c  < 1.11 × 10 5  L -1 ) regions was hard to be effective, especially in low N c and low liquid water content (LWC) (LWC < 0.122 g/m 3 ) regions. In the second seeding, ice crystals (125-250 μm) produced by the first seeding enhance the seeding efficiency. We have developed a novel vaping product (NVP) IS1.0(TT), which utilises a stainless-steel mesh to transfer and vaporise the e-liquid, mitigating some of the potential sources of toxicants that can be generated using the more traditional ‘wick and coil’ approach. The emissions from IS1.0(TT) have previously been found to have lower levels of toxicants overall when directly compared with a commercial wick and coil e-cig. This current study assessed the toxicological responses to aerosols from this NVP. Responses induced by IS1.0(TT)were compared to those from a 3R4F reference cigarette, using in vitro test methods which included regulatory genetic toxicological assays as well as some more contemporary screening approaches. The experimental conditions were designed to facilitate the testing of aerosol from this vaping product at doses that in most cases greatly exceeded those of the 3R4F comparator showed little to no toxicological responses and demonstrated significantly reduced effects in these in vitro assays when compared to 3R4F. Furthermore, the extreme doses tested in the present study indicate that the toxicant profile of this NVP translates to lower biological activity in vitro, and suggests that the absolute risk hazard level associated with electronic cigarettes can be reduced through continuous improvement as the technology evolves.

Animal farms have been considered as the critical reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). Spread of antibiotic resistance from animal farms to the surrounding environments via aerosols has become a growing concern. Here we investigated the dispersal pattern and exposure risk of airborne ARGs (especially in zoonotic pathogens) in the environment of chicken and dairy farms. Aerosol, dust and animal feces samples were collected from the livestock houses and surrounding environments (upwind and downwind areas) for assessing ARG profiles. Antibiotic resistance phenotype and genotype of airborne Staphylococcus spp. was especially analyzed to reveal the exposure risk of airborne ARGs. Results showed that airborne ARGs were detected from upwind (50 m/100 m) and downwind (50 m/100 m/150 m) air environment, wherein at least 30% of bacterial taxa dispersed from the animal houses. Moreover, atmospheric dispersion modeling showed that airborne ARGs can disperse from the animal houses to a distance of 10 km along the wind direction. Clinically important pathogens were identified in airborne culturable bacteria. Genus of Staphylococcus, Sphingomonas and Acinetobacter were potential bacterial host of airborne ARGs. Airborne Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from the environment of chicken farm (n = 148) and dairy farm (n = 87). It is notable that all isolates from chicken-related environment were multidrug-resistance (>3 clinical-relevant antibiotics), with more than 80% of them carrying methicillin resistance gene (mecA) and associated ARGs and MGEs. Presence of numerous ARGs and diverse pathogens in dust from animal houses and the downwind residential areas indicated the accumulation of animal feces origin ARGs in bioaerosols. Employees and local residents in the chick farming environment are exposed to chicken originated ARGs and multidrug resistant Staphylococcus spp. via inhalation. This study highlights the potential exposure risks of airborne ARGs and antibiotic resistant pathogens to human health.

ABSTRACT: The presence of Salmonella in air of poultry houses has been previously confirmed. Therefore, it is important to investigate the entry of Salmonella into broilers through air. The present study aimed to evaluate different levels of Salmonella Enteritidis aerosol inoculations in broiler chicks for colonization of ceca, trachea, and liver/spleen and persistence over time. In 3 independent trials, 112 one-day-old birds were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 28/group). On d 1 of age, one group was exposed to an aerosol of sterile saline and the remaining three groups were exposed to an aerosol generated from one of 3 doses (103, 106, or 109 CFU/mL) of S. Enteritidis inoculum. Aerosol exposure time was 30 min/group and was performed using a nebulizer. On d 3, 7, 14, and 21 of age, ceca, trachea, and liver/spleen were aseptically removed. Ceca were cultured for Salmonella counts (log10 CFU/g) and all tissues were cultured for Salmonella prevalence. All tissues from the control group were Salmonella negative for all sampling days. On sampling d 3 and 7, ceca Salmonella counts were highest (5.14 and 5.11, respectively) when challenged with 109 Salmonella (P ≤ 0.0281). Ceca Salmonella counts increased from d 3 (2.43) to d 7 (4.43), then remained constant when challenged at 103 Salmonella, and counts decreased over time for all other groups. Tissue Salmonella prevalence increased with increasing challenge levels at all sampling timepoints (P ≤ 0.0213). Salmonella prevalence was low (0/18 to 4/18) and did not change over time following 103 Salmonella challenge (P ≥ 0.2394). Prevalence decreased over time in ceca and trachea following 106 and 109 Salmonella challenge (P ≤ 0.0483). Liver/spleen Salmonella prevalence increased from d 3 (13/18) to d 14 (18/18) and then decreased at d 21 (10/18) in birds exposed to an aerosol of 109 Salmonella but remained constant over time for rest of the Salmonella inoculated groups. Overall, this study demonstrated the Salmonella colonization and persistence in different tissues in broilers following exposure to aerosolized Salmonella.
