Background: Depression has been known to affect memory and other cognitive domains. The objective of this longitudinal cohort study was to investigate longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms at age 31 years and visual memory and new learning at the age of 46 years. We investigated whether depressive symptoms at age 31 predicted visual memory deficits at age 46 years, and whether changes in depressive symptoms between 31 and 46 years predicted visual memory at age 46., Methods: Participants were members of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Symptom Checklist-25 (SCL-25) on both occasions. Visual memory and new learning were assessed using Paired Associative Learning (PAL) test at the age 46 follow-up. PAL total errors adjusted and first trial memory score were used as outcomes and basic educational level, relationship status, physical activity and diet at baseline were considered as confounding factors in linear regression analysis., Results: A total of 5029 (57% female) participants were included in the main analysis. No associations were found between depressive symptoms or change in depressive symptoms and visual memory and new learning scores. The result did not change following cut-offs 1.55 and 1.75 for depression., Limitations: SCL-25 only measures symptoms during the past week. Only one cognitive domain was assessed., Conclusions: Contrary to our hypothesis, neither baseline depressive symptoms nor change in depressive symptoms predicted visual memory scores 15 years later. Background: Psychotherapeutic treatment is underused in primary care, where even short-term psychotherapy can be perceived as too lengthy and labour-intensive. We tested here for the first time the preliminary efficacy of seven sessions of interpersonal counselling (IPC) by comparison with sixteen sessions of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) in regular clinical settings., Methods: Patients seeking treatment for the first time who met the DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD, mild/moderate) were randomized to either IPC (n=20) or IPT (n=20). The efficacy of the treatments was assessed using the 34-item Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation (CORE-OM) scale and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale., Results: 90% of the patients completed all the treatment sessions. IPC delivered by psychiatric nurses in primary care proved equally as effective as IPT delivered by psychotherapists/psychologists in secondary care. The pre-treatment to 12-month follow-up within-group effect sizes were large: 1.52 (CORE-OM) and 1.41 (BDI) in the IPC group and 1.58 (CORE-OM) and 1.40 (BDI) in the IPT group. At the 12-month follow-up 59% of the patients in the IPC group and 63% in the IPT group were classified as recovered on the CORE-OM scale, with corresponding remission rates of 61% for both groups on the BDI scale., Limitations: The small sample size limited the power to detect differences between the groups and the naturalistic settings may have confounded the results., Conclusions: This clinical trial suggests that IPC is an appropriate and even sufficient first-phase intervention for handling previously untreated mild to moderate depression in primary health care., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. We examined an association between a history of hospital-treated depression and physical diseases in 1877 suicide victims from Northern Finland. Information on physical diseases and depression of victims was extracted from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registers. Of suicide victims, 31% of female and 16% of male victims had a lifetime history of depression. When compared with victims without any lifetime hospital-treated physical illnesses, a history of depression was shown to associate with the diseases of the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems in the group of symptoms and signs, injuries and poisonings, and infectious diseases among male victims. Respectively, in female victims, an increased prevalence of depression was seen in endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases, diseases of the nervous, circulatory, genitourinary, skin and subcutaneous tissue, and musculoskeletal systems, and with injuries and poisonings, pregnancy-related problems and infectious diseases. This study is the first to evaluate comorbidity between physical illnesses and depression over the lifetime in suicide victims; earlier studies reported findings in living patients from epidemiological or clinical populations. Since depression can affect quality of life in severely ill patients, targeting depression in patients with chronic illness may assist in decreasing suicide rates.

Background: Since low fish consumption and omega-3 fatty acids have recently been linked with depression, we investigated by means of a large, general population database, whether a low fish consumption is associated with increased risk of developing depression., Methods: The Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort was followed up prospectively from pregnancy up to the age of 31 years. The data on HSCL-25 depression subscale, doctor-diagnosed life-time depression and fish consumption (during the previous 6 months) of cohort members were obtained by postal questionnaires at the age of 31. The final number of cohort members, whose completed variable information was available in multivariate logistic analyses, was 2721 males and 2968 females., Results: After adjusting for body mass index, serum total cholesterol level and socioeconomic situation, logistic regression analyses showed that among females the risk of developing depression increased up to 2.6-fold (95%CI 1.4-5.1) among rare fish eaters when compared with regular eaters. In males, there were no significant differences between rare and regular fish eaters for any of the estimates of depression., Limitations: The data on life-time fish consumption of cohort members were not available., Conclusions: A low frequency of fish consumption was statistically significantly associated with depression in women, but not in men. Possible background-theories behind the gender difference are discussed.

The aim of the present study was to test whether the seasonal distribution of suicides differed between atopic and non-atopic suicide victims. A cross-sectional comparison of the semi-annual and seasonal distribution of suicides was made by using a 13-year database of all suicides (1296 males, 289 females) committed during the years 1988-2000 in the province of Oulu in Northern Finland. During the first half of the year, the proportion of suicides among atopic patients was significantly higher than that linked with non-atopic patients. Of all atopic patients, 72% committed suicide during the first and 28% during the second half of the year. Suicides among victims without any atopic disorders followed a uniform seasonal distribution throughout the year (50 vs. 50%). The exacerbation of an atopic disorder may increase the risk of suicide in spring; something that should be taken note of in clinical work.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that traumatic brain injury (TBI) during childhood and adolescence is associated with psychiatric disorders, heavy alcohol use and criminal offenses in adulthood. We made use of an unselected, general population birth cohort (n=12058) in Northern Finland, which was followed up prospectively up to the age of 31. The data on TBIs of the cohort members were collected from the hospital case notes of the outpatient clinics of the hospitals in the region and from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registers (FHDR). The data on mental disorders including alcohol diagnoses were also collected from the FHDR after a careful validation process. The Ministry of Justice provided information on criminal offenses for all subjects. The final number of subjects in our study was 5589 males and 5345 females. We found that after controlling for confounders, TBI during childhood or adolescence increased the risk of developing mental disorders two-fold (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.1-3.6) and TBI was significantly related to later mental disorder with coexisting criminality in male cohort members (OR 4.1, 95% CI 1.2-13.6). The results support the TBI's association with psychiatric morbidity, which should not be overlooked when treating psychiatric patients, especially those with comorbid criminality.
