Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is widely used in the manufacture of medical devices. The plasticizers added to PVC are potentially toxic for humans, likely to migrate, and thus unintentionally administered to patients. The objective of the present study was to reduce the migration of plasticizer (1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, diisononylester (DINCH) or trioctyltrimellitate (TOTM)) from PVC by implementing a three-step surface treatment process: (i) pretreatment with low-pressure argon cold plasma, (ii) polydopamine coating, and (iii) post-treatment with cold plasma exposure or thermal treatment at 140 °C. Samples were then characterized in terms of the water contact angle (WCA) and the aspect in scanning electron microscopy. Plasticizer migration (n = 5) was measured using an HPLC technique with ultraviolet detection and found to depend on the treatment and the plasticizer. Plasticized PVC was hydrophobic, with a measured mean ± standard deviation WCA of 96.7 ± 3.6° for PVC-DINCH and 110.2 ± 5.8° for PVC-TOTM. Plasma post-treatment and thermal post-treatment were respectively associated with a mean decrease in migration of 38.3 ± 1.9% for DINCH and 61.5 ± 4.4% for TOTM. Electrophysiological correlates of voice processing were studied in twenty adults by comparing auditory evoked potentials in response to voice and environmental sounds in passive condition. Both categories of stimuli elicited similar cortical auditory responses (i.e. N1, P2, N2 peaks); however these peaks were overlapped by two components specifically elicited by voice. The first component was evidenced as a positive deflection recorded over the fronto-temporal sites, and lateralized on the right hemiscalp. This fronto-temporal positivity to voice (FTPV) may constitute the electrophysiological counterpart of the activation of the temporal voice areas previously described in neuroimaging studies. The second component was recorded at occipito-temporo-parietal sites. This occipito-temporo-parietal negativity to voice might correspond to visual mental imagery of the vocal sounds or to some form of mental simulation of the action sounds (e.g. coughing). Both components began as early as 70 ms post-stimulus onset indicating a rapid discrimination of voice in our auditory environment, which might be the basis of communication functions in humans., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The use of medical devices containing highly criticized phthalates including di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been challenged by European directive 2007/47/CE, put into effect in March 2010. New plasticizers are now being used to soften PVC in medical devices: trioctyltrimellitate (TOTM), di-isononyl-cyclohexan-1,2-dicarboxilate (DINCH) and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT). To quantify DEHP in nine DEHP-free medical devices made of PVC softened by alternative plasticizers, high performance liquid chromatography analysis with ultraviolet detection at 220 nm wavelength was achieved. An NMR spectroscopy was performed to confirm DEHP presence. Only two medical devices out of the nine tested were truly without DEHP. One of them showed traces of DEHP exceeding the threshold contamination of 0.1% in plastic mass set by REACH regulations. TOTM plasticizer is still incriminated when polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) is contaminated with DEHP. Manufacturers must verify the purity of their raw material, not only on PVC, but also on other soft plastics entering into the composition of medical infusion devices. The clinical consequences of exposure to certain levels of DEHP have not been evaluated. A solution could be to use alternative PVC-free materials., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Disorders in the autism spectrum are characterized by deficits in social and communication skills such as imitation, pragmatic language, theory of mind, and empathy. The discovery of the "mirror neuron system" (MNS) in macaque monkeys may provide a basis from which to explain some of the behavioral dysfunctions seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).We studied seven right-handed high-functioning male autistic and eight normal subjects (TD group) using functional magnetic resonance imaging during observation and execution of hand movements compared to a control condition (rest). The between group comparison of the contrast [observation versus rest] provided evidence of a bilateral greater activation of inferior frontal gyrus during observation of human motion than during rest for the ASD group than for the TD group. This hyperactivation of the pars opercularis (belonging to the MNS) during observation of human motion in autistic subjects provides strong support for the hypothesis of atypical activity of the MNS that may be at the core of the social deficits in autism., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. Nimesulide is a typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), widely used in solid oral formulations. By crystallizing nimesulide from an ethanol solution a crystalline form was obtained, different from the reference sample, as confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and solid cross polarization-magic angle spinning ((13)C-CPMAS) NMR. Moreover, when crystallized from dioxane nimesulide forms a solvate. The solvate was characterized by XRPD, IR-spectrometry, DSC, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and by (13)C-CPMAS NMR. In particular, through this technique, the presence of several conformational isomers was demonstrated. In addition to the physico-chemical characterization, the technological properties of nimesulide, namely densification and tableting, were evaluated. Contrarily to the other forms that are affected by capping phenomena at increasing compression pressures, the form obtained by desolvation of dioxane solvate has positive effect on tableting properties, increasing both compressibility and tabletability of nimesulide.

Clinical reports on autism describe abnormal responses to auditory stimuli such as intolerance to sounds. The present study assessed subjective perception of loudness in subjects with autism compared to healthy controls, using two psychoacoustic tests. First, the auditory dynamic range was evaluated at six different tone frequencies. Secondly, loudness growth as a function of the intensity level of a 1 kHz tone was estimated. Verbal responses from a group of 11 children and adolescents with autism were compared to responses of 11 age- and gender- matched healthy controls. Smaller auditory dynamic ranges were found in the autistic group than in the control group, as well as increased perception of loudness, indicating hyperacusis in subjects with autism.

Spherical propyphenazone crystals were produced by an agglomeration technique using a three solvents system. After selecting the best propyphenazone solvent (ethyl alcohol), non-solvent (demineralized water) and bridging liquid (isopropyl acetate), several of their ratios were tested by a Sheffé ternary diagram. Micromeritic properties of agglomerates such as flowability, were improved and their compression behavior was investigated and compared to that of raw crystals. By compression and densification studies, along with tablet SEM analysis, we have been able to explain the compression mechanism of propyphenazone spherical crystals and have shown that their better tablet/ability can be due to the small size of individual particles in the agglomerates

Whole blood and urinary levels of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) and the derivative urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in normal and autistic subjects. An association was tested between autism and a marker coding for the 5-HT2A serotonergic receptor gene. Significant group (high urinary 5-HT and low whole blood 5-HT in autism) and age effects (urinary 5-HT decrease with age) were found. Moreover, whole blood 5-HT levels were correlated with clinical state. No differences in allele and genotype frequencies for the 5-HT2A receptor marker were found in this autistic population compared with age-matched healthy students.

We tested for an association between autism and genes coding for enzymes involved in monoaminergic metabolism and for a linked marker, c-Harvey-Ras-1 (HRAS 1), using restriction fragment length polymorphisms. We did not find evidence of an association between autism and genes coding for tyrosine hydroxylase, dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), and tryptophan hydroxylase. However, we report a positive association between autism and the locus containing the gene for HRAS-1.
