Search

NGC~5548 is an X-ray bright Seyfert 1 active galaxy. It exhibits a variety of spectroscopic features in the soft X-ray band, including in particular the absorption by the AGN outflows of a broad range of ionization states, with column densities up to 1E27 /m^2, and having speeds up to several thousand kilometers per second. The known emission features are in broad agreement with photoionized X-ray narrow and broad emission line models. We report on an X-ray spectroscopic study using 1.1 Ms XMM-Newton and 0.9 Ms Chandra grating observations of NGC 5548 spanning two decades. The aim is to search and characterize any potential spectroscopic features in addition to the known primary spectral components that are already modeled in high precision. We detect a weak unidentified excess emission feature at 18.4 Angstrom (18.1 Angstrom in the restframe). The feature is seen at >5 sigma statistical significance taking into account the look elsewhere effect. No known instrumental issues, atomic transitions, and astrophysical effects can explain this excess. The observed intensity of the possible feature seems to anti-correlate in time with the hardness ratio of the source. However, the variability might not be intrinsic, it might be caused by the time-variable obscuration by the outflows. An intriguing possibility is the line emission from charge exchange between a partially ionized outflow and a neutral layer in the same outflow, or in the close environment. The catalogue is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or via http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/645/A74, Since its launch in 1999, the XMM-Newton mission has compiled the largest catalogue of serendipitous X-ray sources, with the 3XMM being the third version of this catalogue. This was possible thanks to the combination of a large effective area (5000 cm2 at 1 keV) and a wide field of view (30 arcmin). The 3XMM-DR6 catalogue contains about 470 000 unique X-ray sources over an area of 982 deg2. A significant fraction of these (100 178 sources) have reliable optical, near-(NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR) counterparts in the SDSS, PANSTARRS, VIDEO, UKIDSS, and WISE surveys. In a previous paper we presented photometric redshifts for these sources using the TPZ machine-learning algorithm. About a quarter of these (22 677) have adequate photon statistics, meaning that a reliable X-ray spectrum can be extracted. Owing to both the X-ray counts selection and the optical counterpart constraint, the sample above is biased towards the bright sources. Here, we present XMMFITCAT-Z: a spectral fit catalogue for these sources using the Bayesian X-ray Analysis technique. To demonstrate the potential of the present catalogue, we comment on the optical and MIR colours of the 765 X-ray absorbed sources with NH > 1022 cm−2. We show that a considerable fraction of X-ray-selected AGNs would not be classified as AGNs following the MIR W1–W2 versus W2 selection criterion. These are AGNs with lower luminosities, where the contribution of the host galaxy to the MIR emission is non-negligible. Only one-third of obscured AGNs in X-rays present red colours or r–W2 > 6. Also, it appears that the r–W2 criterion, often used in the literature for the selection of obscured AGNs, produces very different X-ray absorbed AGN samples compared to the standard X-ray selection criteria., This work is part of the Enhanced XMM-Newton Spectralfit Database project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the PRODEX program. From Swift monitoring of a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we found a transient X-ray obscuration event in Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3227, and thus triggered our joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations to study this event. Here in the first paper of our series we present the broadband continuum modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) for NGC 3227, extending from near infrared (NIR) to hard X-rays. We use our new spectra taken with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/COS in 2019, together with archival unobscured XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/STIS data, in order to disentangle various spectral components of NGC 3227 and recover the underlying continuum. We find the observed NIR-optical-UV continuum is explained well by an accretion disk blackbody component (Tmax = 10 eV), which is internally reddened by E(B-V) = 0.45 with a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law. We derive the inner radius (12 Rg) and the accretion rate (0.1 solar mass per year) of the disk by modelling the thermal disk emission. The internal reddening in NGC 3227 is most likely associated with outflows from the dusty AGN torus. In addition, an unreddened continuum component is also evident, which likely arises from scattered radiation, associated with the extended narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 3227. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) continuum, and the 'soft X-ray excess', can be explained with a 'warm Comptonisation' component. The hard X-rays are consistent with a power-law and a neutral reflection component. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity of the AGN in NGC 3227 is about 2.2e+43 erg/s in 2019, corresponding to 3% Eddington luminosity. We report on the X-ray time resolved spectral analysis of XMM-Newton observations of NGC 3783. The main goal is to detect transient features in the Fe K line complex, in order to study the dynamics of the innermost accretion flow. We reanalize archival observations of NGC 3783, a bright local AGN, for which a transient Fe line was reported, complementing this data set with new available observations. This results in a long set of observations which can allow us to better assess the significance of transient features and possibly test their recurrence time. Moreover, since the new data catch the source in an obscured state, this analysis allows also to test whether the appearance/disappearance of transient features is linked to the presence of obscuring gas. We detect discrete features at the >=90% significance level both in emission and in absorption at different times of the observations, split into 5ks time-resolved spectra. The overall significance of individual features is higher in the obscured dataset. The energy distribution of the detections changes between the two states of the source, and the features appear to cluster at different energies. Counting the occurrences of emission/absorption lines at the same energies, we identify several groups of $\geq3\sigma$ detections: emission features in the 4-6 keV band are present in all observations and are most likely due to effects of the absorber present in the source; an emission line blend of neutral Fe K$\beta$/ionized Fe Ka is present in the unobscured dataset; absorption lines produced by gas at different ouflowing velocities and ionization states show an increase in energy between the two epochs, shifting from ~6 keV to ~6.7-6.9 keV. The representation of the features in a time-energy plane via residual maps highlighted a possible modulation of the Fe Ka line intensity, linked to the clumpiness of the absorbing medium., Comment: accepted, A&A

We present the results from our analysis of NuSTAR data of the luminous infrared galaxy Mrk 266, which contains two nuclei, south-western (SW) and north-eastern (NE), which were resolved in previous Chandra imaging. Combining this with the Chandra data, we intepret the hard X-ray spectrum obtained from a NuSTAR observation to result from a steeply rising flux from a Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the SW nucleus which is very faint in the Chandra band, confirming the previous claim. This hard X-ray component is dominated by reflection, and its intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity is likely to be ∼1 × 1043 erg s-1. Although it is bright in soft X-ray, only a moderately absorbed NE nucleus has a 2-10 keV luminosity of 4 × 1041 erg s-1, placing it in the low-luminosity AGN class. [Context] Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray blazar located at z = 0:034, which is regularly monitored by a wide range of multi-wavelength instruments, from radio to VHE gamma rays. During a period of almost two weeks in July 2014, the highest X-ray activity of Mrk 501 was observed in -14 years of operation of the Neil Gehrels Swift Gamma-ray Burst Observatory., [Aims] We characterize the broadband variability of Mrk 501 from radio to VHE gamma rays during the most extreme X-ray activity measured in the last 14 years, and evaluate whether it can be interpreted within theoretical scenarios widely used to explain the broadband emission from blazars., [Methods] The emission of Mrk 501 was measured at radio with Metsähovi, at optical–UV with KVA and Swift/UVOT, at X-ray with Swift/XRT and Swift/BAT, at gamma ray with Fermi-LAT, and at VHE gamma rays with the FACT and MAGIC telescopes. The multi-band variability and correlations were quantified, and the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were compared with predictions from theoretical models., [Results] The VHE emission of Mrk 501 was found to be elevated during the X-ray outburst, with a gamma-ray flux above 0.15 TeV varying from ∼0.5 to ∼2 times the Crab nebula flux. The X-ray and VHE emission both varied on timescales of 1 day and were found to be correlated. We measured a general increase in the fractional variability with energy, with the VHE variability being twice as large as the X-ray variability. The temporal evolution of the most prominent and variable segments of the SED, characterized on a day-by-day basis from 2014 July 16 to 2014 July 31, is described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model with variations in the break energy of the electron energy distribution (EED), and with some adjustments in the magnetic field strength and spectral shape of the EED. These results suggest that the main flux variations during this extreme X-ray outburst are produced by the acceleration and the cooling of the high-energy electrons. A narrow feature at ∼3 TeV was observed in the VHE spectrum measured on 2014 July 19 (MJD 56857.98), which is the day with the highest X-ray flux (>0.3 keV) measured during the entire Swift mission. This feature is inconsistent with the classical analytic functions to describe the measured VHE spectra (power law, log-parabola, and log-parabola with exponential cutoff) at more than 3σ. A fit with a log-parabola plus a narrow component is preferred over the fit with a single log-parabola at more than 4σ, and a dedicated Monte Carlo simulation estimated the significance of this extra component to be larger than 3σ. Context. In recent decades, several multiwavelength studies have been dedicated to exploring the properties of the obscuring material in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Various models have been developed to describe the structure and distribution of this material and constrain its physical and geometrical parameters through spectral fitting techniques. However, questions around the way in which torus mid-infrared (mid-IR) and X-ray emission are related remain unanswered. Aims. In this work, we aim to study whether the dust continuum at mid-IR and gas reflection at X-rays have the same distribution in a sample of AGN. Methods. We carefully selected a sample of 36 nearby AGN with NuSTAR and Spitzer spectra available that satisfy the following criteria: (1) the AGN component dominates the mid-IR spectra (i.e., the stellar and interstellar medium components contribute less than 50% to the spectrum), and (2) the reflection component contributes significantly to the X-ray spectrum. Furthermore, we discarded the sources whose reflection component could be produced by ionized material in the disk. We derived the properties of the nuclear dust and gas through a spectral fitting, using models developed for mid-IR and X-ray wavelengths assuming smooth and clumpy distributions for this structure. Results. We find that a combination of smooth and clumpy distributions of gas and dust, respectively, is preferred for ∼80% of sources with good spectral fits according to the Akaike criterion. However, considering extra information about each individual source, such as the absorption variability, we find that ∼50% of our sources are best described by a clumpy distribution of both dust and gas. The remaining ∼50% of our sources can still be explained with a smooth distribution of gas and a clumpy distribution of dust. Furthermore, we explored the torus dust-to-gas ratio, finding that it is [0.01–1] times that of the interstellar medium. Conclusions. The results presented in this paper suggest that the distribution of the gas and dust in AGN is complex. We find at least six scenarios to explain the observed properties of our sample. In these scenarios, three gas–dust distribution combinations are possible: clumpy–clumpy, smooth–smooth, and smooth–clumpy. The physics and demographics of high-redshift obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) is still scarcely investigated. New samples of such objects, selected with different techniques, can provide useful insights into their physical properties. Aims. With the goal to determine the properties of the gas in the emitting region of type 2 AGN, in particular, the gas metal content, we exploit predictions from photoionization models, including new parameterizations for the distance of gas distribution from the central source and internal microturbulence in the emitting clouds, to interpret rest-frame UV spectral data. Methods. We selected a sample of 90 obscured (type 2) AGN with 1.45 ≤ z ≤ 3.05 from the zCOSMOS-deep galaxy sample by 5σ detection of the high-ionization C iv λ1549 narrow emission line. This feature in a galaxy spectrum is often associated with nuclear activity, and the selection effectiveness has also been confirmed by diagnostic diagrams based on utraviolet (UV) emission-line ratios. We applied the same selection technique and collected a sample of 102 unobscured (type 1) AGN. Taking advantage of the large amount of multiband data available in the COSMOS field, we investigated the properties of the Civ-selected type 2 AGN, focusing on their host galaxies, X-ray emission, and UV emission lines. Finally, we investigated the physical properties of the ionized gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) of this type 2 AGN sample by combining the analysis of strong UV emission lines with predictions from photoionization models. Results. We find that in order to successfully reproduce the relative intensity of UV emission lines of the selected high-z type 2 AGN, two new ingredients in the photoionization models are fundamental: small inner radii of the NLR (≈90 pc for LAGN = 1045 erg s−1 ), and the internal dissipative microturbulence of the gas-emitting clouds (with vmicr ≈ 100 km s−1 ). With these modified models, we compute the gas-phase metallicity of the NLR, and our measurements indicate a statistically significant evolution of the metal content with redshift. Aims. To elucidate the location, physical conditions, mass outflow rate, and kinetic luminosity of the outflow from the active nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509, we used coordinated UV and X-ray spectral observations in 2012 to follow up our lengthier campaign conducted in 2009. Methods. We observed Mrk 509 with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on 2012-09-03 and 2012-10-11 coordinated with X-ray observations using the High Energy Transmission Grating on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our far-ultraviolet spectra used grating G140L on COS to cover wavelengths from 920-2000 Å at a resolving power of ∼2000, and gratings G130M and G160M to cover 1160-1750 Å at a resolving power of ∼15, 000. Results. We detect variability in the blueshifted UV absorption lines on timescales spanning 3-12 years. The inferred densities in the absorbing gas are greater than log n cm -3 ∼ 3. For ionization parameters ranging over log U =-1.5 to-0.2, we constrain the distances of the absorbers to be closer than 220 pc to the active nucleus. Conclusions. We take advantage of the capabilities of the OTELO survey to select and study the AGN population in the field. We performed an analysis of the properties of these objects, including their demography, morphology, and IR luminosity. Focusing on the population of H$\alpha$ emitters at $z \sim 0.4$, we also aim to study the environments of AGN and non-AGN galaxies at that redshift. We make use of the multiwavelength catalog of objects in the field compiled by the OTELO survey, unique in terms of minimum line flux and equivalent width. The OTELO pseudo-spectra allow the identification of emission lines and the spectral classification of the sources. We obtained a sample of 72 AGNs in the field of OTELO, selected with four different methods in the optical, X-rays, and mid-infrared bands. We find that using X-rays is the most efficient way to select AGNs. An analysis was performed on the AGN population of OTELO in order to characterize its members. At $z \sim 0.4$, we find that up to 26\% of our H$\alpha$ emitters are AGNs. At that redshift, AGNs are found in identical environments to non-AGNs, although they represent the most clustered group when compared to passive and star-forming galaxies. The majority of our AGNs at any redshift were classified as late-type galaxies, including a 16\% proportion of irregulars. Another 16\% of AGNs show signs of interactions or mergers. Regarding the infrared luminosity, we are able to recover all the luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the field of OTELO up to $z\sim 1.6$. We find that the proportion of LIRGs and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) is higher among the AGN population, and that ULIRGs show a higher fraction of AGNs than LIRGs., Comment: 31 pages, 32 figures. [Aims] We take advantage of the capability of the OTELO survey to obtain the H alpha luminosity function (LF) at z similar to 0.40. Because of the deepest coverage of OTELO, we are able to determine the faint end of the LF, and thus better constrain the star formation rate and the number of galaxies at low luminosities. The AGN contribution to this LF is estimated as well. [Methods] We make use of the multiwavelength catalogue of objects in the field compiled by the OTELO survey, which is unique in terms of minimum flux and equivalent width. We also take advantage of the pseudo-spectra built for each source, which allow the identification of emission lines and the discrimination of different types of objects. [Results] The H alpha luminosity function at z similar to 0.40 is obtained, which extends the current faint end by almost 1 dex, reaching minimal luminosities of log(10) L-lim = 38.5 erg s(-1) (or similar to 0.002 M-circle dot yr(-1)). The AGN contribution to the total H alpha luminosity is estimated. We find that no AGN should be expected below a luminosity of log(10) L = 38.6 erg s(-1). We use 3213 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the XMM-XXL northern field to investigate the relation of AGN type with host galaxy properties. Applying a Bayesian method, we derive the hardness ratios, and through these the hydrogen column density (NH) for each source. We consider those with NH > 1021.5 cm−2 as absorbed sources (type 2). We examine the star formation rate (SFR) and the stellar mass (M*) distributions for both absorbed and unabsorbed sources. Our work indicates that there is no significant link between AGN type and these host galaxy properties. Next, we investigate whether the AGN power, as represented by its X-ray luminosity (LX) correlates with any deviation of the host galaxy’s place from the so-called main sequence of galaxies, and we examine this separately for the obscured and the unobscured AGN populations. To take into account the effect of M* and redshift on SFR, we use the normalised SFR (SFRnorm). We find that the correlation between LX and SFRnorm follows approximately the same trend for both absorbed and unabsorbed sources, a result that favours the standard AGN unification models. Finally, we explore the connection between the obscuration (NH) and the SFR. Context. Hard X-ray properties of beamed active galactic nuclei have been published in the 105-month Swift/BAT catalog, but there have not been any studies carried out so far on a well-defined, radio-selected sample of low-peaked blazars in the hard X-ray band. Aims. Using the statistically complete MOJAVE-1 sample, we aim to determine the hard X-ray properties of radio-selected blazars, including the enigmatic group of gamma-ray-faint blazars. Additionally, we aim to determine the contribution of radio-selected low-peaked blazars to the diffuse cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Methods. We determined photon indices, fluxes, and luminosities in the range of 20 keV–100 keV of the X-ray spectra of blazars and other extragalactic jets from the MOJAVE-1 sample, derived from the 105-month Swift/BAT survey. We calculated log N–log S distributions and determined the luminosity functions. Results. The majority of the MOJAVE-1 blazars are found to be hard X-ray emitters albeit many at low count rates. The log N–log S distribution for the hard X-ray emission of radio-selected blazars is clearly non-Euclidean, in contrast to the radio flux density distribution. Approximately 0.2% of the CXB in the 20 keV–100 keV band can be resolved into MOJAVE-1 blazars. Conclusions. The peculiar log N–log S distribution disparity might be attributed to different evolutionary paths in the X-ray and radio bands, as tested by luminosity-function modeling. X-ray variability can be ruled out as the dominant contributor. Low-peaked blazars constitute an intrinsically different source population in terms of CXB contribution compared to similar studies of X-ray-selected blazars. The hard X-ray flux and spectral index can serve as a good proxy for the gamma-ray detection probability of individual sources. Future observations combining deep X-ray survey, for example, with eROSITA, and targeted gamma-ray observations with CTA can benefit strongly from the tight connection between these high-energy bands for the different blazar sub-classes.

Context. The giant radio galaxy PBC J2333.9-2343 shows different characteristics at different wavebands that are difficult to explain within the actual generic schemes of unification of active galactic nuclei (AGN). It is therefore a good candidate host for different phases of nuclear activity. Aims. We aim at disentangling the nature of this AGN by using simultaneous multiwavelength data. Methods. We obtained data in 2015 from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the San Pedro Mártir telescope, and the XMM-Newton observatories. This allows the study of the nuclear parts of the galaxy through its morphology and spectra and the analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED). We also reanalysed previously-presented optical data from the San Pedro Mártir telescope from 2009 to provide a homogeneous comparison. Results. At X-ray frequencies the source is unabsorbed. The optical spectra are of a type 1.9 AGN, both in 2009 and 2015, although showing a broader component in 2015. The VLBA radio images show an inverted spectrum with a self-Absorbed, optically thick compact core (α = 0.40, where S âν) and a steep-spectrum, optically thin jet (α =-0.5). The SED resembles that of typical blazars and is best represented by an external Compton (EC) model with a viewing angle of approximately 3-6°. The apparent size of the large-scale structure of PBC J2333.9-2343 must correspond to an intrinsic deprojected value of approximately 7 Mpc for θ < 10°, and to >13 Mpc for θ < 5°, a value much larger than the biggest giant radio galaxy known, which is 4.5 Mpc. Conclusions. The above arguments suggest that PBC J2333.9-2343 has undergone a new episode of nuclear activity and that the direction of the new jet has changed in the plane of the sky and is now pointing towards us. Context. Seyfert 1.8/1.9 are sources showing weak broad H components in their optical spectra. According to unification schemes, they are seen with an edge-on inclination, similar to type 2 Seyfert galaxies, but with slightly lower inclination angles. Aims. We aim to test whether Seyfert 1.8/1.9 have similar properties at UV and X-ray wavelengths. Methods. We used the 15 Seyfert 1.8/1.9 in the Véron Cetty and Véron catalog with public data available from the Chandra and/or XMM-Newton archives at different dates, with timescales between observations ranging from days to years. All the spectra of the same source were simultaneously fit with the same model and different parameters were left free to vary in order to select the variable parameter(s). Whenever possible, short-term variations from the analysis of the X-ray light curves and long-term UV variations from the optical monitor onboard XMM-Newton were studied. Our results are homogeneously compared with a previous work using the same methodology applied to a sample of Seyfert 2. Results. X-ray variability is found in all 15 nuclei over the aforementioned ranges of timescales. The main variability pattern is related to intrinsic changes in the sources, which are observed in ten nuclei. Changes in the column density are also frequent, as they are observed in six nuclei, and variations at soft energies, possibly related to scattered nuclear emission, are detected in six sources. X-ray intra-day variations are detected in six out of the eight studied sources. Variations at UV frequencies are detected in seven out of nine sources. Conclusions. A comparison between the samples of Seyfert 1.8/1.9 and 2 shows that, even if the main variability pattern is due to intrinsic changes of the sources in the two families, these nuclei exhibit different variability properties in the UV and X-ray domains. In particular, variations in the broad X-ray band on short timescales (days to weeks), and variations in the soft X-rays and UV on long timescales (months to years) are detected in Seyfert 1.8/1.9 but not in Seyfert 2. Overall, we suggest that optically classified Seyfert 1.8/1.9 should be kept separated from Seyfert 2 galaxies in UV/X-ray studies of the obscured AGN population because their intrinsic properties might be different. © ESO, 2017., We acknowledge the AGN group at the IAA for helpful comments during this work. Fermi J1544-0639/ASASSN-17gs/AT2017egv was identified as a gamma-ray/optical transient on May 15, 2017. Subsequent multiwavelength observations suggest that this source may belong to the new class of radio-weak BL Lacs. We studied the X-ray spectral properties and short-term variability of Fermi J1544-0639 to constrain the X-ray continuum emission mechanism of this peculiar source. We present the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation, 56 ks in length, performed on February 21, 2018. The source exhibits strong X-ray variability, both in flux and spectral shape, on timescales of ~10 ks, with a harder-when-brighter behaviour typical of BL Lacs. The X-ray spectrum is nicely described by a variable broken power law, with a break energy of around 2.7 keV consistent with radiative cooling due to Comptonization of broad-line region photons. We find evidence for a `soft excess', nicely described by a blackbody with a temperature of ~0.2 keV, consistent with being produced by bulk Comptonization along the jet., 11 pages, 12 figures. 49 pages, 15 tables, 11 figures, 2 appendix.-- Pre-print archive., We present the results of a homogeneous X-ray analysis for 82 nearby low-ionisation, narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) selected from the catalogue of Carrillo et al. (1999, Rev. Mex. Astron. Astrofis., 35, 187). All sources have available Chandra (68 sources) and/or XMM-Newton (55 sources) observations. This is the largest sample of LINERs with X-ray spectral data (60 out of the 82 objects), and it significantly improves our previous analysis based on Chandra data for 51 LINERs (Gonzalez-Martin et al. 2006b, A&A, 460, 45). It both increases the sample size and adds XMM-Newton data. New models permit the inclusion of double absorbers in the spectral fits. Nuclear X-ray morphology is inferred from the compactness of detected nuclear sources in the hard band (4.5–8.0 keV). Sixty per cent of the sample shows a compact nuclear source and are classified as active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates. The spectral analysis indicates that best fits involve a composite model: 1) absorbed primary continuum and 2) soft spectrum below 2 keV described by an absorbed scatterer and/or a thermal component. The resulting median spectral parameters and their standard deviations are = 2.11 0.52, = 0.54 0.30 keV, = 21.32 0.71 and = 21.93 1.36. We complement our X-ray results with an analysis of HST optical images and literature data on emission lines, radio compactness, and stellar population. [Aims] X-ray sources at intermediate fluxes (a few x 10-14 erg cm-2 s-1) with a sky density of ~100 deg-2 are responsible for a significant fraction of the cosmic X-ray background at various energies below 10 keV. The aim of this paper is to provide an unbiased and quantitative description of the X-ray source population at these fluxes and in various X-ray energy bands., [Methods] We present the XMM-Newton Medium sensitivity Survey (XMS), including a total of 318 X-ray sources found among the serendipitous content of 25 XMM-Newton target fields. The XMS comprises four largely overlapping source samples selected at soft (0.5-2 keV), intermediate (0.5-4.5 keV), hard (2-10 keV) and ultra-hard (4.5-7.5 keV) bands, the first three of them being flux-limited., [Results] We report on the optical identification of the XMS samples, complete to 85-95%. At the flux levels sampled by the XMS we find that the X-ray sky is largely dominated by Active Galactic Nuclei. The fraction of stars in soft X-ray selected samples is below 10%, and only a few per cent for hard selected samples. We find that the fraction of optically obscured objects in the AGN population stays constant at around 15-20% for soft and intermediate band selected X-ray sources, over 2 decades of flux. The fraction of obscured objects amongst the AGN population is larger (~35-45%) in the hard or ultra-hard selected samples, and constant across a similarly wide flux range. The distribution in X-ray-to-optical flux ratio is a strong function of the selection band, with a larger fraction of sources with high values in hard selected samples. Sources with X-ray-to-optical flux ratios in excess of 10 are dominated by obscured AGN, but with a significant contribution from unobscured AGN., Based on observations obtained with XMM-Newton, an ESA science mission with instruments and contributions directly funded by ESA Member States and the USA (NASA). We study the relationship between the structure and star-formation rate (SFR) of X-ray selected low and moderate luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the two Chandra Deep Fields, using Hubble Space Telescope imaging from the Cosmic Assembly Near Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and deep far-infrared maps from the PEP+GOODS-Herschel survey. We derive detailed distributions of structural parameters and FIR luminosities from carefully constructed control samples of galaxies, which we then compare to those of the AGNs. At z~1, AGNs show slightly diskier light profiles than massive inactive (non-AGN) galaxies, as well as modestly higher levels of gross galaxy disturbance (as measured by visual signatures of interactions and clumpy structure). In contrast, at z~2, AGNs show similar levels of galaxy disturbance as inactive galaxies, but display a red central light enhancement, which may arise due to a more pronounced bulge in AGN hosts or due to extinguished nuclear light. We undertake a number of tests of these alternatives, but our results do not strongly favour one interpretation over the other. In active galactic nuclei (AGN)-galaxy co-evolution models, AGN winds and outflows are often invoked to explain why super-massive black holes and galaxies stop growing efficiently at a certain phase of their lives. They are commonly referred to as the leading actors of feedback processes. Evidence of ultra-fast (v ≳ 0.05c) outflows in the innermost regions of AGN has been collected in the past decade by sensitive X-ray observations for sizable samples of AGN, mostly at low redshift. Here we present ultra-deep XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral data of an obscured (N≈ 2 × 10 cm), intrinsically luminous (L≈ 4 × 10 erg s) quasar (named PID352) at z ≈ 1.6 (derived from the X-ray spectral analysis) in the Chandra Deep Field-South. The source is characterized by an iron emission and absorption line complex at observed energies of E ≈ 2-3 keV. While the emission line is interpreted as being due to neutral iron (consistent with the presence of cold absorption), the absorption feature is due to highly ionized iron transitions (FeXXV, FeXXVI) with an outflowing velocity of 0.14 , as derived from photoionization models. The mass outflow rate - ∼2 M yr - is similar to the source accretion rate, and the derived mechanical energy rate is ∼9.5 × 10 erg s, corresponding to 9% of the source bolometric luminosity. PID352 represents one of the few cases where indications of X-ray outflowing gas have been observed at high redshift thus far. We present results from the deep XMM-Newton observations of the two brightest X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS), PID 203 (z = 0.544) and PID 319 (z = 0.742). The long exposure of 2.5 Ms over a 10 year period (net 4 yr with a 6 yr gap) makes it possible to obtain high quality X-ray spectra of these two Type I AGN with X-ray luminosity of 1044 erg s-1, which is the typical luminosity for low-redshift PG quasars, and track their X-ray variability both in flux and spectral shape. Both sources showed X-ray flux variability of ~10−20% in rms, which is similar in the soft (0.5−2 keV) and hard (2−7 keV) bands. PID 203, which has evidence for optical extinction, shows modest amount of absorption (NH≤ 1 × 1021 cm-2) in the X-ray spectrum. Fe K emission is strongly detected in both objects with EW ~ 0.2 keV. This paper presents the analysis of a statistically complete sample of 28 serendipitous X-ray sources selected in 82 pointed XMM-Newton fields down to a count-rate of 0.002 counts s-1 (4.5-7.5 keV energy band). This is the first sample selected in this energy range to have complete spectroscopic identifications and redshift determinations for all the objects. Apart from one Galactic source (an interacting binary), all the objects are AGNs. Their optical and X-ray properties (derived from the spectral analysis of the XMM-EPIC data) are compared together. The good correlation between the optical spectral type and the X-ray absorption properties supports the AGN unified model. Only one object that does not fit the relation between optical and X-ray absorption is found, namely a Seyfert 1.9 with no evidence of obscuration in the X-ray band (NH < 1.3 × 1020 cm-2). In total, 7 sources out of 27 are heavily obscured in the X-ray (NH > 1022 cm-2), corresponding to a surface density of 0. 7 deg-2 at the flux limit the sample (4-7 × 10-14 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 4.5-7.5 keV energy band). Among these obscured objects, two sources show a large (intrinsic) luminosity (L [2-10keV] > 1044 erg s-1) and are thus classified as type 2 QSO. Finally, we have compared the fraction of X-ray absorbed AGNs (26%) with that predicted by the current XRB synthesis models at the flux limit of the survey. We find that the models significantly (∼90% confidence level) over predict the fraction of absorbed AGNs thus confirming also in this hard energy band (4.5-7.5 keV) similar results recently obtained in the 2-10 keV band., This work has received partial financial support from ASI (I/R/062/02, I/R/037/01) and from the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research (MURST) through grant Cofin. We present the results of a series of radio, optical, X-ray, and γ-ray observations of the BL Lac object S50716+714 carried out between April 2007 and January 2011. The multifrequency observations were obtained using several ground- and space-based facilities. The intense optical monitoring of the source reveals faster repetitive variations superimposed on a long-term variability trend on a time scale of ∼350 days. Episodes of fast variability recur on time scales of ∼60−70 days. The intense and simultaneous activity at optical and γ-ray frequencies favors the synchrotron self-Compton mechanism for the production of the high-energy emission. Two major low-peaking radio flares were observed during this high optical/γ-ray activity period. The radio flares are characterized by a rising and a decaying stage and agrees with the formation of a shock and its evolution. We found that the evolution of the radio flares requires a geometrical variation in addition to intrinsic variations of the source. Different estimates yield robust and self-consistent lower limits of δ ≥ 20 and equipartition magnetic field Beq ≥ 0.36 G. Causality arguments constrain the size of emission region θ ≤ 0.004 mas. We found a significant correlation between flux variations at radio frequencies with those at optical and γ-rays. The optical/GeV flux variations lead the radio variability by ∼65 days. The longer time delays between low-peaking radio outbursts and optical flares imply that optical flares are the precursors of radio ones. An orphan X-ray flare challenges the simple, one-zone emission models, rendering them too simple. [Context]: Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRG) are the most luminous persistent objects in the Universe. They exhibit extremely high star formation rates, and most of them seem to harbour an active galactic nucleus (AGN). They are unique laboratories for investigating the most extreme star formation and its connection to super-massive black hole growth. [Aims]: The relative AGN and starburst (SB) contributions to the total output in these objects is still debated. Our aim is to disentangle the AGN and SB emission of a sample of thirteen HLIRG. Methods. We studied the MIR low-resolution spectra of a sample of thirteen HLIRG obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. The 5-8 μm range is an optimal window for detecting AGN activity even in a heavily obscured environment. We performed an SB/AGN decomposition of the continuum using templates, which has been successfully applied for ULIRG in previous works. [Results]: The MIR spectra of all sources is largely dominated by AGN emission. By converting the 6 μm luminosity into IR luminosity, we found that ~80% of the sample shows an IR output dominated by the AGN emission. However, the SB activity is significant in all sources (mean SB contribution ~30%), showing star formation rates ~300-3000 M⊙ yr-1. With X-ray and MIR data we estimated the dust covering factor (CF) of these HLIRG, finding that a significant fraction presents a CF consistent with unity. Along with the high X-ray absorption shown by these sources, this suggests that large amounts of dust and gas enshroud the nucleus of these HLIRG, as also observed in ULIRG. [Conclusions]: Our results agree with previous studies of the IR SED of HLIRG using radiative transfer models, and we find strong evidence that all HLIRG harbour an AGN. Moreover, this work provides further support for the idea that AGN and SB are both crucial to understanding the properties of HLIRG. We present the first results of the spectroscopy of distant, obscured AGN as obtained with the ultra-deep (≈3.3 Ms) XMM-Newton survey in the Chandra deep field South. One of the primary goals of the project is to characterize the X-ray spectral properties of obscured and heavily obscured Compton-thick AGN over the range of redhifts and luminosities that are relevant in terms of their contribution to the X-ray background. The ultra-deep exposure, coupled with the XMM detector’s spectral throughput, allowed us to accumulate good quality X-ray spectra for a large number of X-ray sources and, in particular, for heavily obscured AGN at cosmological redshifts. Specifically we present the X-ray spectral properties of two high-redshift – z = 1.53 and z = 3.70 – sources. The XMM spectra of both are very hard, with a strong iron Kα line at a rest-frame energy of ~6.4 keV. A reflection-dominated continuum provides the best description of the X-ray spectrum of the z = 1.53 source, while the intrinsic continuum of the z = 3.70 AGN is obscured by a large column NH ≈ 1024 cm-2 of cold gas. Compton-thick absorption, or close to it, is unambiguously detected in both sources. Interestingly, these sources would not be selected as candidate Compton thick AGN by some multiwavelength selection criteria based on the mid-infrared to optical and X-ray to optical flux ratios. [Aims]: We discuss the broad band X-ray properties of one of the largest samples of X-ray selected type-1 AGN to date (487 objects in total), drawn from the XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey (XWAS). The objects presented in this work cover 2-10 keV (rest-frame) luminosities from ~1042-1045 erg s-1 and are detected up to redshift ~4. We constrain the overall properties of the broad band continuum, soft excess and X-ray absorption, along with their dependence on the X-ray luminosity and redshift. We discuss the implications for models of AGN emission. [Methods]: We fitted the observed 0.2-12 keV broad band spectra with various models to search for X-ray absorption and soft excess. The F-test was used with a significance threshold of 99% to statistically accept the detection of additional spectral components. [Results]: We constrained the mean spectral index of the broad band X-ray continuum to (Γ) = 1.96 ± 0.02 with intrinsic dispersion (Γ) = 0.27 +o.01 -0.02. The continuum becomes harder at faint fluxes and at higher redshifts and hard (2-10 keV) luminosities. The dependence of Γ with flux is likely due to undetected absorption rather than to spectral variation. We found a strong dependence of the detection efficiency of objects on the spectral shape. We expect this effect to have an impact on the measured mean continuum shapes of sources at different redshifts and luminosities. We detected excess absorption in >~3% of our objects, with rest-frame column densities ~a few * 1022 cm-2. The apparent mismatch between the optical classification and X-ray properties of these objects is a challenge for the standard orientation-based AGN unification model. We found that the fraction of objects with detected soft excess is ~36%. Using a thermal model, we constrained the soft excess mean rest-frame temperature and intrinsic dispersion to kT ~ 100 eV and kT ~ 34 eV. The origin of the soft excess as thermal emission from the accretion disk or Compton scattered disk emission is ruled out on the basis of the temperatures detected and the lack of correlation of the soft excess temperature with the hard X-ray luminosity over more than 2 orders of magnitude in luminosity. Furthermore, the high luminosities of the soft excess rule out an origin in the host galaxy., SM, MW and JAT acknowledge support from the UK STFC research council. [Aims]: The relationship between star formation and super-massive black hole growth is central to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRG) are unique laboratories to investigate the connection between starburst (SB) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), because they exhibit extreme star-formation rates, and most of them show evidence of harbouring powerful AGN. [Methods]: Our previous X-ray study of a sample of HLIRG shows that the X-ray emission of most of these sources is dominated by AGN activity. To improve our estimate of the relative contribution of the AGN and SB emission to its total bolometric output, we have built multi-wavelength (from radio to X-rays) spectral energy distributions (SED) for these HLIRG and fitted standard empirical AGN and SB templates to these SED. [Results]: In broad terms, most sources are well fitted with this method, and we found AGN and SB contributions similar to those obtained by previous studies of HLIRG. We have classified the HLIRG SED into two groups, class A and class B. Class A HLIRG show a flat SED from the optical to the infrared energy range. Three out of seven class A sources can be modelled with a pure luminosity-dependent quasar template, while the rest of them require a type 1 AGN template and a SB template. The SB component is dominant in three out of four class A objects. Class B HLIRG show SED with a prominent and broad IR bump. These sources cannot easily be modelled with a combination of pure AGN and pure SB, they require templates of composite objects, suggesting that of their emission comes from stellar formation processes. [Conclusions]: We propose that our sample is actually composed of three different populations: very luminous quasars (class A objects with negligible SB contribution), young galaxies going through their maximal star-formation period (class A objects with significant SB emission) and the high luminosity tail of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies population distribution (class B sources)., A.R. acknowledges support from a Universidad de Cantabria fellowship and from ASI grant n. [Context]: There have been recent claims that a significant fraction of type 2 AGN accrete close to or even above the Eddington limit. In type 2 AGN, the bolometric luminosity (Lb) is generally inferred from the [OIII] emission line luminosity (LOIII). The key issue in estimating the bolometric luminosity in these AGN, is therefore to know the bolometric correction to be applied to LOIII. A complication arises from the observed LOIII being affected by extinction, most likely from dust within the narrow line region. The extinction-corrected [OIII] luminosity (LOIII c) is a better estimator of the nuclear luminosity than LOIII. However, only the bolometric correction to be applied to the uncorrected LOIII has been evaluated so far. [Aims]: This paper is devoted to estimating the bolometric correction COIII = L b/ LOIII c for deriving the Eddington ratios for the type 2 AGN in a sample of SDSS objects. [Methods]: We collected 61 sources from the literature with reliable estimates of both LOIII c and X-ray luminosities (Lx). To estimate COIII, we combined the observed correlation between LOIII c and LX with the X-ray bolometric correction. [Results]: In contrast to previous studies, we found a linear correlation between LOIII c and LX. We estimated COIII using an earlier luminosity-dependent X-ray bolometric correction, and we found a mean value of COIII in the luminosity ranges log LOIII = 38-40, 40-42, and 42-44 of 87, 142, and 454, respectively. We used it to calculate the Eddington ratio distribution of type 2 SDSS AGN at 0.3 < z < 0.4 and found that these sources are not accreting near their Eddington limit, contrary to previous claims., This work benefitted from an Italy-Spain Integrated Actions, reference HI-0079. The soft X-ray emission in star-forming regions is driven by the heating of the diffuse interstellar medium, and by the mechanical energy released by stellar winds and supernova explosions, both directly linked to the strength of the star formation episode., [Aims] We analyze the relation between the soft X-ray and far infrared luminosities as predicted by evolutionary population synthesis models, aiming first to test the validity of the soft X-ray luminosity as a star formation rate estimator, using the already known calibration of the FIR luminosity as a proxy, and second to propose a calibration based on the predictions of evolutionary synthesis models., [Methods] We have computed the soft X-ray and far infrared luminosities expected for a massive starburst as a function of evolutionary state, the efficiency of the conversion of mechanical energy into soft X-ray luminosity, the star formation history (instantaneous or extended) and dust abundance, and we have compared these predictions with observational values for 62 star-forming galaxies taken from the literature., [Results] The observational L_softX/L_FIR ratios are consistent with the model predictions under realistic assumptions (young starbursts, and efficiency in the re-processing of mechanical energy of a few percent), confirming the correlation between the diffuse soft X-ray emission and the star formation episode., [Conclusions] The soft X-ray emission of the diffuse, extended gas surrounding massive star-forming regions, can be used as a star formation rate tracer. The empirical calibrations presented in the literature are supported by the predictions of evolutionary synthesis models, and by the analysis of a larger number of star-forming galaxies. [Context]: One of the most important parameters in the XRB (X-ray background) synthesis models is the average efficiency of accretion onto SMBH (super-massive black holes). This can be inferred from the shape of broad relativistic Fe lines seen in X-ray spectra of AGN (active galactic nuclei). Several studies have tried to measure the mean Fe emission properties of AGN at different depths with very different results. [Aims]: We compute the mean Fe emission from a large and representative sample of AGN X-ray spectra up to redshift ∼3.5. [Methods]: We developed a method of computing the rest-frame X-ray average spectrum and applied it to a large sample (more than 600 objects) of type 1 AGN from two complementary medium sensitivity surveys based on XMM-Newton data, the AXIS and XWAS samples. This method makes use of medium-to-low quality spectra without needing to fit complex models to the individual spectra but with computing a mean spectrum for the whole sample. Extensive quality tests were performed by comparing real to simulated data, and a significance for the detection of any feature over an underlying continuum was derived. [Results]: We detect with a 99.9% significance an unresolved Fe Kα emission line around 6.4 keV with an EW ∼ 90 eV, but we find no compelling evidence of any significant broad relativistic emission line in the final average spectrum. Deviations from a power law around the narrow line are best represented by a reflection component arising from cold or low-ionization material. We estimate an upper limit for the EW of any relativistic line of 400 eV at a 3σ confidence level. We also marginally detect the so-called Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect on the EW for the unresolved emission line, which appears weaker for higher luminosity AGN. [Conclusions]: We computed an upper limit for the average relativistic Fe Kα line contribution that is significantly lower than previously reported values from similar analyses. Our results, however, are in excellent agreement with individual analyses of local AGN samples. We present the results of the correlation between the nuclear 2-10 keV X-ray and radio (at 2 cm, 6 cm, and 20 cm) luminosities for a well-defined sample of local Seyfert galaxies. We use a sample of low luminosity radio galaxies (LLRGs) for comparison. In both Seyfert and LLRG samples, X-ray and radio luminosities are significantly correlated over 8 orders of magnitude, indicating that the X-ray and radio emission sources are strongly coupled. Moreover, both samples show a similar regression slope, LX L R 0.97, but Seyfert galaxies are three orders of magnitude less luminous in the radio band than LLRGs. This suggests that either similar physical mechanisms are responsible for the observed emission or a combination of different mechanisms ends up producing a similar correlation slope. Indeed, the common belief for LLRG is that both the X-ray and radio emission are likely dominated by a relativistic jet component, while in Seyfert galaxies the X-ray emission probably arises from a disk-corona system and the radio emission is attributed to a jet/outflow component. We investigate the radio loudness issue in the two samples and find that the Seyfert galaxies and the LLRGs show a different distribution of the radio loudness parameters. No correlation is found between the luminosity and the radio loudness; however, the latter is related to the black hole mass and anti-correlated with the Eddington ratio. The dichotomy in the radio loudness between Seyfert and LLRG observed down to low Eddington ratios, L2-10 keV/LEdd ∼ 10-8, does not support the idea that the origin of the radio loudness is due to a switch in the accretion mode., F.P. acknowledges support by a “Juan de la Cierva” fellowship. Context. Variability across the electromagnetic spectrum is a property of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that can help constrain the physical properties of these galaxies. Nonetheless, the way in which the changes happen and whether they occur in the same way in every AGN are still open questions. Aims. This is the third in a series of papers with the aim of studying the X-ray variability of different families of AGN. The main purpose of this work is to investigate the variability pattern(s) in a sample of optically selected Seyfert 2 galaxies. Methods. We use the 26 Seyfert 2s in the Véron-Cetty and Véron catalog with data available from Chandra and/or XMM-Newton public archives at different epochs, with timescales ranging from a few hours to years. All the spectra of the same source were simultaneously fitted, and we let different parameters vary in the model. Whenever possible, short-term variations from the analysis of the light curves and/or long-term UV flux variations were studied. We divided the sample into Compton-thick and Compton-thin candidates to account for the degree of obscuration. When transitions between Compton-thick and thin were obtained for different observations of the same source, we classified it as a changing-look candidate. Results. Short-term variability at X-rays was studied in ten cases, but variations are not found. From the 25 analyzed sources, 11 show long-term variations. Eight (out of 11) are Compton-thin, one (out of 12) is Compton-thick, and the two changing-look candidates are also variable. The main driver for the X-ray changes is related to the nuclear power (nine cases), while variations at soft energies or related to absorbers at hard X-rays are less common, and in many cases these variations are accompanied by variations in the nuclear continuum. At UV frequencies, only NGC 5194 (out of six sources) is variable, but the changes are not related to the nucleus. We report two changing-look candidates, MARK 273 and NGC 7319. Conclusions. A constant reflection component located far away from the nucleus plus a variable nuclear continuum are able to explain most of our results. Within this scenario, the Compton-thick candidates are dominated by reflection, which suppresses their continuum, making them seem fainter, and they do not show variations (except MARK 3), while the Compton-thin and changing-look candidates do. © ESO 2015., We acknowledge the referee, M. We present the results of simultaneous XMM-Newton X-ray and 3.5 m/CAHA optical spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 993. This galaxy exhibited in the past significant variations of its broad emission lines which classified it as Sy1, Sy1.5 and Sy1.9 in different epochs. In order to test the X-ray/optical consistency of the unified AGN model we have compared the amount of photoelectric X-ray absorption with the Balmer decrement of broad emission line components. The optical data show that during our observations Mrk 993 was in a Sy1.8 state with a Balmer decrement of ∼9. The X-ray absorbing gas amounts only to 7 × 1020 cm-2, most likely due to the host galaxy. For a normal gas to dust ratio in the absorbing material (expected to arise in the molecular torus) both quantities are clearly discrepant with an intrinsic Balmer decrement of ∼3.4. We therefore conclude that the Balmer ratio is intrinsic rather than produced by obscuration and therefore that in this object the optical broad line emission properties are dictated by the physics of the broad line region rather than orientation/obscuration effects., Financial support for this work was provided by the Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia under project ESP2003-0812. We have performed a detailed analysis of 3 optically normal galaxies extracted from the XMM Bright Serendipitous Source Sample. Thanks to the good statistics of the XMM-Newton data, we have unveiled the presence of an AGN in all of them. In particular, we detect both X-ray obscured (NH > 1022 cm-2) and unobscured (NH < 1022 cm-2) AGNs with intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities in the range between 1042-1043 erg s-1. We find that the X-ray and optical properties of the sources discussed here could be explained assuming a standard AGN hosted by galaxies with magnitudes MR < M*, taking properly into account the absorption associated with the AGN, the optical faintness of the nuclear emission with respect to the host galaxy, and the inadequate set-up and atmospheric conditions during the optical spectroscopic observations. Our new spectroscopic observations have revealed the expected AGN features also in the optical band. These results clearly show that optical spectroscopy sometimes can be inefficient in revealing the presence of an AGN, which instead is clearly found from an X-ray spectroscopic investigation. This remarks the importance of being careful in proposing the identification of X-ray sources (especially at faint fluxes) when only low quality optical spectra are in hand. This paper describes the performance of XMM-Newton for serendipitous surveys and summarises the scope and potential of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Survey. The role of the Survey Science Centre (SSC) in the XMM-Newton project is outlined. The SCC's follow-up and identification programme for the XMM-Newton serendipitous survey is described together with the presentation of some of the first results. Aims. We seek a comprehensive analysis of all the information provided by the XMM-Newton satellite of the four Seyfert 1 galaxies ESO 359-G19, HE 1143-1810, CTS A08.12, and Mrk 110, including the UV range, to characterize the different components that are emitting and absorbing radiation in the vicinity of the active nucleus. Methods. The continuum emission was studied through the EPIC spectra by taking advantage of the spectral range of these cameras. The high-resolution RGS spectra were analyzed to characterize the absorbing and emission line features that arise in the spectra of the sources. All these data, complemented by information in the UV, are analyzed jointly in order to achieve a consistent characterization of the observed features in each object. Results. The continuum emission of the sources can be characterized either by a combination of a power law and a black body for the weakest objects or by two power law components for the brightest ones. The continuum is not absorbed by neutral or ionized material in the line of sight to any of these sources. In all of them we have identified a narrow Fe-Kα line at 6.4 keV. In ESO 359-G19 we also find an Fexxvi line at about 7 keV. In the soft X-rays band, we identify only one Ovii line in the spectra of HE 1143-1810 and CTS A08.12, and two Ovii-Heα triplets and a narrow Oviii-Lyα emission line in Mrk 110. Conclusions. Not detecting warm material in the line of sight to the low state objects is due to intrinsically weaker or absent absorption in the line of sight and not to a low signal-to-noise ratio in the data.
