1. The host of GRB 171205A in 3D: A resolved multiwavelength study of a rare grand-design spiral GRB host.

Abstract

Long GRB hosts at z < 1 are usually low-mass, low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. Here we present the most detailed, spatially resolved study of the host of GRB 171205A so far, a grand-design barred spiral galaxy at z = 0.036. Our analysis includes MUSE integral field spectroscopy complemented with high-spatial-resolution UV/VIS HST imaging and CO(1−0) and H I 21 cm data. The GRB is located in a small star-forming region in a spiral arm of the galaxy at a deprojected distance of ∼8 kpc from the center. The galaxy shows a smooth negative metallicity gradient and the metallicity at the GRB site is half solar, slightly below the mean metallicity at the corresponding distance from the center. Star formation in this galaxy is concentrated in a few H II regions between 5 and 7 kpc from the center and at the end of the bar, inwards from the GRB region; however the H II region hosting the GRB is in the top 10% of the regions with the highest specific star-formation rate. The stellar population at the GRB site has a very young component (< 5 Myr) that contributes a significant part of the light. Ionized and molecular gas show only minor deviations at the end of the bar. A parallel study found an asymmetric H I distribution and some additional gas near the position of the GRB, which might explain the star-forming region of the GRB site. Our study shows that long GRBs can occur in many types of star-forming galaxies; however the actual GRB sites have consistently low metallicity, high star formation rates, and a young population. Furthermore, gas inflow or interactions triggering the star formation producing the GRB progenitor might not be evident in ionized or even molecular gas but only in H I. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Context. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the collapse of some very massive stars, that emit ultra-relativistic jets. When the jets collide with the interstellar medium they decelerate and generate the so-called afterglow emission, which has been observed to be polarised. Aims. We study the polarimetric evolution of the GRB 210610B afterglow, at z = 1.1341. This allows us to evaluate the role of geometric and/or magnetic mechanisms in the GRB afterglow polarisation. Methods. We observed GRB 210610B using imaging polarimetry with CAFOS on the 2.2 m Calar Alto Telescope and FORS2 on the 4 × 8.1 m Very Large Telescope. Complementary optical spectroscopy was obtained with OSIRIS on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. We studied the GRB light-curve from X-rays to the optical bands and the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). This allowed us to strongly constrain the line-of-sight extinction. Finally, we studied the GRB host galaxy using optical to NIR data to fit the SED and derive its integrated properties. Results. GRB 210610B had a bright afterglow with a negligible line-of-sight extinction. Polarimetry was obtained at three epochs: during an early plateau phase, at the time when the light curve breaks, and after the light curve steepened. We observe an initial polarisation of ∼4% that goes to zero at the time of the break, and it then again increases to ∼2%, with a change in the position angle of 54 ± 9 deg. The spectrum shows features with very low equivalent widths. This indicate a small amount of material in the line of sight within the host. Conclusions. The lack of dust and the low amount of material in the line of sight to GRB 210610B allowed us to study the intrinsic polarisation of the GRB optical afterglow. The GRB polarisation signals are consistent with ordered magnetic fields in refreshed shock or/and hydrodynamics-scale turbulent fields in the forward shock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Context. Gamma-ray bursts are the most energetic known explosions. Although they fade rapidly, they give us the opportunity to measure redshift and important properties of their host galaxies. We report the photometric and spectroscopic study of the Swift GRB 160203A at z = 3.518, and its host galaxy. Fine-structure absorption lines, detected in the afterglow at different epochs, allow us to investigate variability due to the strong fading background source. Aims. We obtained two optical to near-infrared spectra of the GRB afterglow with X-shooter on ESO/VLT, 18 minutes and 5.7 hours after the burst, allowing us to investigate temporal changes of fine-structure absorption lines. Methods. We measured H I column density log N(HI/cm–2) = 21.75 ± 0.10, and several heavy-element ions along the GRB sightline in the host galaxy, among which Si II, Al II, Al III, C II, Ni II, Si IV, C IV, Zn II and Fe II, and Fe II∗ and Si II∗ fine-structure transitions from energetic levels excited by the afterglow, at the common redshift z = 3.518. We measured [M/H]TOT = –0.78 ± 0.13 and a [Zn/Fe]FIT = 0.69 ± 0.15, representing the total (dust corrected) metallicity and dust depletion, respectively. We detected additional intervening systems along the line of sight at ɀ = 1.03, ɀ = 1.26, ɀ = 1.98, ɀ = 1.99, ɀ = 2.20, and ɀ = 2.83. We could not measure significant variability in the strength of the fine-structure lines throughout all the observations and determined an upper limit for the GRB distance from the absorber of d < 300 pc, adopting the canonical UV pumping scenario. However, we note that the quality of our data is not sufficient to conclusively rule out collisions as an alternative mechanism. Results. GRB 160203A belongs to a growing sample of GRBs with medium resolution spectroscopy, provided by the Swift/X-shooter legacy programme, which enables a detailed investigation of the interstellar medium in high-redshift GRB host galaxies. In particular, this host galaxy shows relatively high metal enrichment and dust depletion already in place when the universe was only 1.8 Gyr old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the detections of molecular hydrogen (H-2), vibrationally-excited H-2 (H-2*), and neutral atomic carbon (C I), an efficient tracer of molecular gas, in two new afterglow spectra of GRBs 181020A (z = 2.938) and 190114A (z = 3.376), observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Both host-galaxy absorption systems are characterized by strong damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) and substantial amounts of molecular hydrogen with log N(H I, H-2) = 22.20 +/- 0.05, 20.40 +/- 0.04 (GRB 181020A) and log N(H I, H-2) = 22.15 +/- 0.05, 19.44 +/- 0.04 (GRB 190114A). The DLA metallicites, depletion levels, and dust extinctions are within the typical regimes probed by GRBs with [Zn/H] = -1.57 +/- 0.06, [Zn/Fe] = 0.67 +/- 0.03, and A(v) = 0.27 +/- 0.02 mag (GRB 181020A) and [Zn/H] = -1.23 +/- 0.07, [Zn/Fe] = 1.06 +/- 0.08, and A(v) = 0.36 +/- 0.02 mag (GRB 190114A). In addition, we examine the molecular gas content of all known H-2-bearing GRB-DLAs and explore the physical conditions and characteristics required to simultaneously probe C I and H-2*. We confirm that H-2 is detected in all C I- and H-2*-bearing GRB absorption systems, but that these rarer features are not necessarily detected in all GRB H-2 absorbers. We find that a large molecular fraction of f(H2) greater than or similar to 10(-3) is required for C I to be detected. The defining characteristic for H-2* to be present is less clear, though a large H-2 column density is an essential factor. We also find that the observed line profiles of the molecular-gas tracers are kinematically >cold>, with small velocity offsets of delta v < 20 km s(-1) from the bulk of the neutral absorbing gas. We then derive the H-2 excitation temperatures of the molecular gas and find that they are relatively low with T-ex approximate to 100-300 K, however, there could be evidence of warmer components populating the high-J H-2 levels in GRBs 181020A and 190114A. Abstract

Context. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced during the dramatic deaths of massive stars with very short lifetimes, meaning that they explode close to the birth place of their progenitors. Over a short period they become the most luminous objects observable in the Universe, being perfect beacons to study high-redshift star-forming regions. Aims. We aim to use the afterglow of GRB 161023A at a redshift z = 2.710 as a background source to study the environment of the explosion and the intervening systems along its line of sight. Methods. For the first time, we complement ultraviolet (UV), optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with millimetre spectroscopy using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), which allows us to probe the molecular content of the host galaxy. The X-shooter spectrum shows a plethora of absorption features including fine-structure and metastable transitions of Fe, Ni, Si, C, and O. We present photometry ranging from 43 s to over 500 days after the burst. Results. We infer a host-galaxy metallicity of [Zn/H] = -1.11 ± 0.07, which, corrected for dust depletion, results in [X/H] = -0.94 ± 0.08. We do not detect molecular features in the ALMA data, but we derive limits on the molecular content of log(N/cm) < 15.7 and log(N/cm, which are consistent with those that we obtain from the optical spectra, log(N/cm)< 15.2 and log(N/cm) < 14.5. Within the host galaxy, we detect three velocity systems through UV, optical and NIR absorption spectroscopy, all with levels that were excited by the GRB afterglow. We determine the distance from these systems to the GRB to be in the range between 0.7 and 1.0 kpc. The sight line to GRB 161023A shows nine independent intervening systems, most of them with multiple components. Conclusions. Although no molecular absorption was detected for GRB 161023A, we show that GRB millimetre spectroscopy is now feasible and is opening a new window on the study of molecular gas within star-forming galaxies at all redsh

Abstract

Context. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) give us the chance to study both their extreme physics and the star-forming galaxies in which they form. Aims. GRB 100418A, at a redshift of z = 0.6239, had a bright optical and radio afterglow, and a luminous star-forming host galaxy. This allowed us to study the radiation of the explosion as well as the interstellar medium of the host both in absorption and emission. Methods. We collected photometric data from radio to X-ray wavelengths to study the evolution of the afterglow and the contribution of a possible supernova (SN) and three X-shooter spectra obtained during the first 60 h. Results. The light curve shows a very fast gamma-ray burst: individual: GRB100418A; supernovae: individual: GRB100418A; galaxies: dwarf; ISM: abundances; ISM: kinematics and dynamicsoptical rebrightening, with an amplitude of ∼3 magnitudes, starting 2.4 h after the GRB onset. This cannot be explained by a standard external shock model and requires other contributions, such as late central-engine activity. Two weeks after the burst we detect an excess in the light curve consistent with a SN with peak absolute magnitude M = -18.5 mag, among the faintest GRB-SNe detected to date. The host galaxy shows two components in emission, with velocities differing by 130 km s, but otherwise having similar properties. While some absorption and emission components coincide, the absorbing gas spans much higher velocities, indicating the presence of gas beyond the star-forming regions. The host has a star formation rate of SFR = 12.2 M yr, a metallicity of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.55, and a mass of 1.6⊙ ×⊙ 10 M. Conclusions. GRB 100418A is a member of a class of afterglow light curves which show a steep rebrightening in the optical during the first day, which cannot be explained by traditional models. Abstract

Context. The identification of the sources that reionized the Universe and their specific contribution to this process are key missing pieces of our knowledge of the early Universe. Faint star-forming galaxies may be the main contributors to the ionizing photon budget during the epoch of reionization, but their escaping photons cannot be detected directly due to inter-galactic medium opacity. Hence, it is essential to characterize the properties of faint galaxies with significant Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage up to z ∼ 4 to define indirect indicators allowing analogs to be found at the highest redshift. Aims. Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) typically explode in star-forming regions of faint, star-forming galaxies. Through LGRB afterglow spectroscopy it is possible to detect directly LyC photons. Our aim is to use LGRBs as tools to study LyC leakage from faint, star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Methods. Here we present the observations of LyC emission in the afterglow spectra of GRB 191004B at z = 3.5055, together with those of the other two previously known LyC-leaking LGRB host galaxies (GRB 050908 at z = 3.3467, and GRB 060607A at z = 3.0749), to determine their LyC escape fraction and compare their properties. Results. From the afterglow spectrum of GRB 191004B we determine a neutral hydrogen column density at the LGRB redshift of log(NH I/cm−2) = 17.2 ± 0.15, and negligible extinction (AV = 0.03 ± 0.02 mag). The only metal absorption lines detected are C IV and Si IV. In contrast to GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A, the host galaxy of GRB 191004B displays significant Lyman-alpha (Lyα) emission. From its Lyα emission and the non-detection of Balmer emission lines we constrain its star-formation rate (SFR) to 1 ≤ SFR ≤ 4.7 M⊙ yr−1. We fit the Lyα emission with a shell model and find parameters values consistent with the observed ones. The absolute (relative) LyC escape fractions we find for GRB 191004B, GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A are of 0.35−0.11+0.10 0. 35 − 0.11 + 0.10 $ 0.35^{+0.10}_{-0.11} $ (0.43−0.13+0.12 0. 43 − 0.13 + 0.12 $ 0.43^{+0.12}_{-0.13} $), 0.08−0.04+0.05 0. 08 − 0.04 + 0.05 $ 0.08^{+0.05}_{-0.04} $ (0.08−0.04+0.05 0. 08 − 0.04 + 0.05 $ 0.08^{+0.05}_{-0.04} $) and 0.20−0.05+0.05 0. 20 − 0.05 + 0.05 $ 0.20^{+0.05}_{-0.05} $ (0.45−0.15+0.15 0. 45 − 0.15 + 0.15 $ 0.45^{+0.15}_{-0.15} $), respectively. We compare the LyC escape fraction of LGRBs to the values of other LyC emitters found from the literature, showing that LGRB afterglows can be powerful tools to study LyC escape for faint high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Indeed we could push LyC leakage studies to much higher absolute magnitudes. The host galaxies of the three LGRBs presented here have all M1600 >  −19.5 mag, with the GRB 060607A host at M1600 >  −16 mag. LGRB hosts may therefore be particularly suitable for exploring the ionizing escape fraction in galaxies that are too faint or distant for conventional techniques. Abstract

Since the first discovery of a broad-lined type Ic supernova (SN) with a long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) in 1998, fewer than fifty GRB-supernovae (SNe) have been discovered. The intermediate-luminosity Swift GRB 161219B and its associated supernova SN 2016jca, which occurred at a redshift of z = 0.1475, represents only the seventh GRB-SN to have been discovered within 1 Gpc, and hence provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the observational and physical properties of these very elusive and rare type of SN. As such, we present optical to near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of GRB 161219B and SN 2016jca, spanning the first three months since its discovery. GRB 161219B exploded in the disk of an edge-on spiral galaxy at a projected distance of 3.4 kpc from the galactic centre. GRB 161219B itself is an outlier in the E - E plane, while SN 2016jca had a rest-frame, peak absolute V-band magnitude of M = - 19.0 ± 0.1, which it reached after 12.3 ± 0.7 rest-frame days. We find that the bolometric properties of SN 2016jca are inconsistent with being powered solely by a magnetar central engine, and demonstrate that it was likely powered exclusively by energy deposited by the radioactive decay of nickel and cobalt into their daughter products, which were nucleosynthesised when its progenitor underwent core collapse. We find that 0.22 ± 0.08M of nickel is required to reproducethe peak luminosity of SN 2016jca, and we constrain an ejecta mass of 5.8 ± 0.3M and a kinetic energy of 5.1 ± 0.8 × 10 erg. Finally, we report on a chromatic, pre-maximum bump in the g-band light curve, and discuss its possible origin.© ESO, 2017.

Abstract

Very massive stars in the final phases of their lives often show unpredictable outbursts that can mimic supernovae, so-called, >SN impostors>, but the distinction is not always straightforward. Here we present observations of a luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 2770 in outburst over more than 20 yr that experienced a possible terminal explosion as type IIn SN in 2015, named SN 2015bh. This possible SN (or >main event>) had a precursor peaking ∼40 days before maximum. The total energy release of the main event is ∼1.8 × 10 erg, consistent with a <0.5 M shell plunging into a dense CSM. The emission lines show a single narrow P Cygni profile during the LBV phase and a double P Cygni profile post maximum suggesting an association of the second component with the possible SN. Since 1994 the star has been redder than an LBV in an S-Dor-like outburst. SN 2015bh lies within a spiral arm of NGC 2770 next to several small star-forming regions with a metallicity of ∼0.5 solar and a stellar population age of 7-10 Myr. SN 2015bh shares many similarities with SN 2009ip and may form a new class of objects that exhibit outbursts a few decades prior to a >hyper eruption> or final core-collapse. If the star survives this event it is undoubtedly altered, and we suggest that these >zombie stars> may evolve from an LBV to a Wolf-Rayet star over the timescale of only a few years. The final fate of these stars can only be determined with observations a decade or more after the SN-like event.© ESO, 2017.

Abstract

Aims. We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow and host galaxy of gamma-ray burst GRB040924. This GRBhad a rather short duration of T90 ~ 2.4 s, and a well sampled optical afterglow light curve. We aim to use this dataset to find furtherevidence that this burst is consistent with a massive star core-collapse progenitor.Methods. We combine the afterglow data reported here with those from the literature and compare the host properties with surveydata.Results. We find that the global behaviour of the optical afterglow is well fit by a broken power-law, with a break at ~0.03 days. Wedetermine the redshift z = 0.858 ± 0.001 from the detected emission lines in our spectrum. Using the spectrum and photometry wederive global properties of the host, showing it to have similar properties to other long GRB hosts.We detect the [Ne iii] emission linein the spectrum, and compare the fluxes of this line of a sample of 15 long GRB host galaxies with survey data, showing the long GRBhosts to be comparable to local metal-poor emission line galaxies in their [Ne iii] emission. We fit the supernova bump accompanyingthis burst, and find that it is similar to other long GRB supernova bumps, but fainter.Conclusions. All properties of GRB 040924 (the associated supernova, the spectrum and SED of host and afterglow) are consistentwith an origin in the core-collapse of a massive star.

Abstract

Context. Theory suggests that about 10% of Swift-detected gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will originate at redshifts, z, greater than 5 yeta number of high redshift candidates may be left unconfirmed due to the lack of measured redshifts.Aims. Here we introduce our code, GRBz, a method of simultaneous multi-parameter fitting of GRB afterglow optical and nearinfrared, spectral energy distributions. It allows for early determinations of the photometric redshift, spectral index and host extinctionto be made.Methods. We assume that GRB afterglow spectra are well represented by a power-law decay and model the effects of absorption dueto the Lyman forest and host extinction. We use a genetic algorithm-based routine to simultaneously fit the parameters of interest, anda Monte Carlo error analysis.Results. We use GRBs of previously determined spectroscopic redshifts to prove our method, while also introducing new near infrareddata of GRB 990510 which further constrains the value of the host extinction.Conclusions. Our method is effective in estimating the photometric redshift of GRBs, relatively unbiased by assumptions of theafterglow spectral index or the host galaxy extinction. Monte Carlo error analysis is required as the method of error estimate based onthe optimum population of the genetic algorithm underestimates errors significantly.

Abstract

Context. GRB afterglow spectra are sensitive probes of interstellar matter along the line-of-sight in their host galaxies, as well as inintervening galaxies. The rapid fading of GRBs makes it very difficult to obtain spectra of sufficient resolution and S/N to allow forthese kinds of studies.Aims. We investigate the state and properties of the interstellar medium in the host of GRB060206 at z = 4.048 with a detailed studyof groundstate and finestructure absorption lines in an early afterglow spectrum. This allows us to derive conclusions on the natureand origin of the absorbing structures and their connection to the host galaxy and/or the GRB.Methods. We used early (starting 1.6 h after the burst) WHT/ISIS optical spectroscopy of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burstGRB060206 detecting a range of metal absorption lines and their finestructure transitions. Additional information is provided by theafterglow lightcurve. The resolution and wavelength range of the spectra and the bright afterglow have facilitated a detailed study andfitting of the absorption line systems in order to derive column densities. We also used deep imaging to detect the host galaxy andprobe the nature of an intervening system at z = 1.48 seen in absorption in the afterglow spectra.Results. We detect four discrete velocity systems in the resonant metal absorption lines, best explained by shells within and/or aroundthe host created by starburst winds. The finestructure lines have no less than three components with strengths decreasing from theredmost components. We therefore suggest that the finestructure lines are best explained as being produced by UV pumping fromwhich follows that the redmost component is the one closest to the burst where Nv was detected as well. The host is detected in deepHST imaging with F814WAB = 27.48 ± 0.19 mag and a 3s upper limit of H = 20.6 mag (Vega) is achieved.
