Abstract

Two different detectors and techniques are employed at n TOF facility, at CERN, to improve the accuracy of the neutron capture cross section of 197Au(n,γ): a total absorption calorimeter and a set of C6D6. The accurate knowledge of this cross section is of great importance for all the (n,γ) reactions study. The neutron capture cross section and nuclear resonce parameters of the 197Au have been measured in the energy range of 1 eV to 1 kev. The present work shows in average a good agreement with evaluated data libraries, although sizeable differences have been observed for some resonances. Two new resonances have also been discovered. The accuracy of the resonance partial widths has been improved and the main nuclear quantities such as the neutron strength function have been extracted.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections of Zr and La isotopes have important implications in the field of nuclear astrophysics as well as in the nuclear technology. In particular the Zr isotopes play a key role for the determination of the neutron density in the He burning zone of the Red Giant star, while the 139La is important to monitor the s-process abundances from Ba up to Pb. Zr is also largely used as structural materials of traditional and advanced nuclear reactors. The nuclear resonance parameters and the cross section of 90,91,92,93,94,96Zr and 139La have been measured at the n TOF facility at CERN. Based on these data the capture resonance strength and the Maxwellian-averaged cross section were calculated.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections of actinides are of great relevance for the Transmutation of Nuclear Waste in Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) and Generation-IV reactors. The neutron capture cross sections of 237Np and 240Pu were measured at the n TOF facility with a Total Absorption Calorimeter. The data have been analyzed with the SAMMY code. The corresponding covariance matrices have been generated. The final cross sections are presented and compared to the previously existing ones.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross-section of 234U has been measured for energies from thermal up to the keV region in the neutron time-of-flight facility n TOF, based on a spallation source located at CERN. A 4π BaF2 array composed of 40 crystals, placed at a distance of 184.9 m from the neutron source, was employed as a total absorption calorimeter (TAC) for detection of the prompt γ-ray cascade from capture events in the sample. This text describes the experimental setup, all necessary steps followed during the data analysis procedure. Results are presented in the form of R-matrix resonance parameters from fits with the SAMMY code and compared to the evaluated data of ENDF in the relevant energy region, indicating the good performance of the n TOF facility and the TAC.

Abstract

We have measured the neutron capture and fission cross section of 233U at the neutron time-of-flight facility n TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV with high accuracy by using a high performance 4π BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) as a detection device. The method, based on the TAC energy response study, allowing to disentangle between γ’s originating from fission and capture will be presented as well as the first very preliminary results.

Abstract

A series of measurements of neutron induced fission cross section of various TRU isotopes have been performed at the CERN n TOF spallation neutron facility, in the energy range from thermal to nearly 250 MeV. The experimental apparatus consists in a fast ionization chamber (FIC), used as a fission fragment detector with a high efficiency. Good discrimination between alphas and fission fragments can be obtained with a simple amplitude threshold. In order to allow the monitoring of the neutron beam and to extract the n TOF neutron flux, the well known cross section of the 235U(n,f) reaction, considered as a fission standard, has been used. Preliminary results for the cross section are shown for some selected isotopes such as 235U, 233U and 245Cm in the energy range from 0.050 eV to about 2MeV.

A series of (n,γ) neutron capture measurements on the lead isotopes and bismuth have been carried out at the CERN n TOF installation in the neutron energy range from 1 eV up to 1MeV. At n TOF, contaminations due to scattered neutrons were reduced down to a negligible level by using improved γ-ray detectors with very low neutron sensitivity. The background level has been determined precisely from a complementary measurement. Other experimental effects related to the electronic threshold in the detectors and the angular distribution of the prompt γ-rays were investigated via Monte Carlo simulations and could be taken in account in the analysis of the capture data. With this set of measurements the energy differential (n,γ) cross sections of 204,206,207Pb and 209Bi have been determined with good accuracy. The information obtained in this work becomes of interest for constraining r-process calculations and in particular for the Th/U cosmochronometer.

Abstract

Neutron resonance spectroscopy plays an important role in the investigation of neutron induced reaction cross sections and nuclear structure in the MeV excitation range. Neutron time-of-flight facilities are the most used installations to explore neutron resonances. In this paper we describe the basic features of neutron resonance spectroscopy together with recent results from the time-of-flight facility n TOF at CERN.

Abstract

he CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is well suited to measure low cross sections as those of neutron-induced fission in subactinides. The cross section ratios of (nat)Pb and (209)Bi relative to (235)U and (238)U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross sections of 186,187,188Os have been measured at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility, n TOF, in the neutron energy range from 1 eV up to 1MeV. In this contribution, we report the results of the analysis of the resolved resonance region (RRR). Resonance parameters have been extracted from a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields with the SAMMY code. A statistical analysis has been performed and the related average resonance parameters are derived. This information is crucial for a complete understanding and modeling in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model of the capture and inelastic reaction channels, required for the evaluation of the stellar reaction rates of these isotopes. Maxwellian average cross sections for the range of temperatures relevant for s-process nucleosynthesis have been derived from the combined information of the experimental data in the resolved and unresolved resonance regions. A brief account of the implications of this analysis in the estimation of the s-process component of the 187Os abundance and the related impact on the estimates of the time-duration of the galactic nucleosynthesis through the Re/Os clock is given.
