39 pags., 78 figs., 2 tabs. 6 apps., Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial coherence of the emission into account. We produced gas column density and mean velocity maps to estimate the relative orientation of their spatial gradients. We identified three cloud velocity layers at different systemic velocities and extracted the filaments in each velocity layer. The filaments are preferentially located in regions of low centroid velocity gradients. By comparing the relative orientation between the column density and velocity gradients of each layer from the ORION-B observations and synthetic observations from 3D kinematic toy models, we distinguish two types of behavior in the dynamics around filaments: (i) radial flows perpendicular to the filament axis that can be either inflows (increasing the filament mass) or outflows and (ii) longitudinal flows along the filament axis. The former case is seen in the Orion B data, while the latter is not identified. We have also identified asymmetrical flow patterns, usually associated with filaments located at the edge of an HII region. This is the first observational study to highlight feedback from HII regions on filament formation and, thus, on star formation in the Orion B cloud. The ionization fraction in neutral interstellar clouds is a key physical parameter controlling multiple physical and chemical processes, and varying by orders of magnitude from the UV irradiated surface of the cloud to its cosmic-ray dominated central regions. Traditional observational tracers of the ionization fraction, which mostly rely on deuteration ratios of molecules like HCO+, suffer from the fact that the deuterated molecules are only detected in a tiny fraction of a given Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC). In [1], we propose a machine learning-based, semi-automatic method to search in a large dataset of astrochemical model results for new tracers of the ionization fraction, and propose several new tracers relevant in different ranges of physical conditions.

The grand-design spiral galaxy M~51 was observed at 40pc resolution in CO(1--0) by the PAWS project. A large number of molecular clouds were identified and we search for velocity gradients in two high signal-to-noise subsamples, containing 682 and 376 clouds. The velocity gradients are found to be systematically prograde oriented, as was previously found for the rather flocculent spiral M~33. This strongly supports the idea that the velocity gradients reflect cloud rotation, rather than more random dynamical forces, such as turbulence. Not only are the gradients prograde, but their $\frac{\partial v}{\partial x}$ and $\frac{\partial v}{\partial y}$ coefficients follow galactic shear in sign, although with a lower amplitude. No link is found between the orientation of the gradient and the orientation of the cloud. The values of the cloud angular momenta appear to be an extension of the values noted for galactic clouds despite the orders of magnitude difference in cloud mass. Roughly 30\% of the clouds show retrograde velocity gradients. For a strictly rising rotation curve, as in M~51, gravitational contraction would be expected to yield strictly prograde rotators within an axisymmetric potential. In M~51, the fraction of retrograde rotators is found to be higher in the spiral arms than in the disk as a whole. Along the leading edge of the spiral arms, a majority of the clouds are retrograde rotators. While this work should be continued on other nearby galaxies, the M~33 and M~51 studies have shown that clouds rotate and that they rotate mostly prograde, although the amplitudes are not such that rotational energy is a significant support mechanism against gravitation. The relative abundance of the dust grain types in the interstellar medium (ISM) is directly linked to physical quantities that trace the evolution of galaxies. We study the dust properties of the whole disc of M33 at spatial scales of ~170 pc. This analysis allows us to infer how the relative dust grain abundance changes with the conditions of the ISM, study the existence of a submillimetre excess and look for trends of the gas-to-dust mass ratio (GDR) with other physical properties of the galaxy. For each pixel in the disc of M33 we fit the infrared SED using a physically motivated dust model that assumes an emissivity index beta close to 2. We derive the relative amount of the different dust grains in the model, the total dust mass, and the strength of the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) heating the dust at each spatial location. The relative abundance of very small grains tends to increase, and for big grains to decrease, at high values of Halpha luminosity. This shows that the dust grains are modified inside the star-forming regions, in agreement with a theoretical framework of dust evolution under different physical conditions. The radial dependence of the GDR is consistent with the shallow metallicity gradient observed in this galaxy. The strength of the ISRF derived in our model correlates with the star formation rate in the galaxy in a pixel by pixel basis. Although this is expected it is the first time that a correlation between both quantities is reported. We produce a map of submillimetre excess in the 500 microns SPIRE band for the disc of M33. The excess can be as high as 50% and increases at large galactocentric distances. We further study the relation of the excess with other physical properties of the galaxy and find that the excess is prominent in zones of diffuse ISM outside the main star-forming regions, where the molecular gas and dust surface density are low., Accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics, 19 pages, 18 figures plus appendix

Aims. We study the effect of large scale dynamics on the molecular composition of the dense interstellar medium during the transition between diffuse to dense clouds. Methods. We followed the formation of dense clouds (on sub-parsec scales) through the dynamics of the interstellar medium at galac- tic scales. We used results from smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations from which we extracted physical parameters that are used as inputs for our full gas-grain chemical model. In these simulations, the evolution of the interstellar matter is followed for ~50 Myr. The warm low-density interstellar medium gas flows into spiral arms where orbit crowding produces the shock formation of dense clouds, which are held together temporarily by the external pressure. Results. We show that depending on the physical history of each SPH particle, the molecular composition of the modeled dense clouds presents a high dispersion in the computed abundances even if the local physical properties are similar. We find that carbon chains are the most affected species and show that these differences are directly connected to differences in (1) the electronic fraction, (2) the C/O ratio, and (3) the local physical conditions. We argue that differences in the dynamical evolution of the gas that formed dense clouds could account for the molecular diversity observed between and within these clouds. Conclusions. A wide variety of molecules have recently been detected in the Horsehead nebula photodissociation region (PDR) suggesting that: (i) gas-phase and grain chemistries should both contribute to the formation of organic molecules, and (ii) far-ultraviolet (FUV) photodesorption may explain the release into the gas phase of grain surface species. In order to tackle these specific problems and more generally in order to better constrain the chemical structure of these types of environments we present a study of the Horsehead nebula gas-grain chemistry. To do so we used the 1D astrochemical gas-grain code Nautilus with an appropriate physical structure computed with the Meudon PDR Code and compared our modeled outcomes with published observations and with previously modeled results when available. The use of a large set of chemical reactions coupled with the time-dependent code Nautilus allows us to reproduce most of the observations well, including those of the first detections in a PDR of the organic molecules HCOOH, CH2CO, CH3CHO and CH3CCH, which are mostly associated with hot cores. We also provide some abundance predictions for other molecules of interest. (abridged) In this work we have a closer look at the gas content or fraction and the associated star formation rate in main sequence and starburst galaxies at z=0 and z~1-2 by applying an analytical model of galactic clumpy gas disks to samples of local spiral galaxies, ULIRGs, submillimeter (smm), and high-z starforming galaxies. The model gas and dust temperatures are determined by the heating and cooling equilibrium. Dense clouds are heated by turbulent mechanical and cosmic ray heating. The molecular abundances of individual gas clouds are determined by a detailed chemical network involving the cloud lifetime, density, and temperature. Molecular line emission is calculated with an escape probability formalism. The model calculates simultaneously the total gas mass, HI/H_2 mass, the gas velocity dispersion, IR luminosity, IR spectral energy distribution, CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED), HCN(1-0), and HCO+(1-0) emission of a galaxy given its size, integrated star formation rate, stellar mass radial profile, rotation curve, and Toomre Q parameter. The model reproduces the observed CO luminosities and SLEDs of all sample galaxies within the model uncertainties (~0.3 dex). Whereas the CO emission is robust against the variation of model parameters, the HCN and HCO+ emission is sensitive to the chemistry of the interstellar medium. The CO and HCN mass-to-light conversion factors including CO-dark H_2 are given and compared to the values found in the literature. Both, the HCN and HCO+ emission trace the dense molecular gas to a factor of ~2 for the local spiral galaxies, ULIRGs and smm-galaxies. About 80% of the molecular line emission of compact starburst galaxies originates in non-selfgravitating gas clouds. The integrated Kennicutt-Schmidt law has a slope of ~1 for the local spirals, ULIRGs, and smm-galaxies, whereas the slope is 1.7 for high-z starforming galaxies., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A; corrected version The smm and high-z starforming galaxies were erroneously treated as if they were local galaxies. This lead to differences in the CO fluxes of about 10% and in the HCN and HCO+ fluxes of about 25-30%. Aims: We study the association between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and young stellar cluster candidates (YSCCs) to shed light on the time evolution of local star formation episodes in the nearby galaxy M 33. Methods: The CO (J = 2-1) IRAM all-disk survey was used to identify and classify 566 GMCs with masses between 2 × 104 and 2 × 106M☉ across the whole star-forming disk of M 33. In the same area, there are 630 YSCCs that we identified using Spitzer-24 μm data. Some YSCCs are embedded star-forming sites, while the majority have GALEX-UV and Hα counterparts with estimated cluster masses and ages. Results: The GMC classes correspond to different cloud evolutionary stages: inactive clouds are 32% of the total and classified clouds with embedded and exposed star formation are 16% and 52% of the total, respectively. Across the regular southern spiral arm, inactive clouds are preferentially located in the inner part of the arm, possibly suggesting a triggering of star formation as the cloud crosses the arm. The spatial correlation between YSCCs and GMCs is extremely strong, with a typical separation of 17 pc. This is less than half the CO (2-1) beam size and illustrates the remarkable physical link between the two populations. GMCs and YSCCs follow the HI filaments, except in the outermost regions, where the survey finds fewer GMCs than YSCCs, which is most likely due to undetected clouds with low CO luminosity. The distribution of the non-embedded YSCC ages peaks around 5 Myr, with only a few being as old as 8-10 Myr. These age estimates together with the number of GMCs in the various evolutionary stages lead us to conclude that 14 Myr is the typical lifetime of a GMC in M 33 prior to cloud dispersal. The inactive and embedded phases are short, lasting about 4 and 2 Myr, respectively. This underlines that embedded YSCCs rapidly break out from the clouds and become partially visible in Hα or UV long before cloud dispersal. We present an analysis of the systematic CO(2-1) survey at 12" resolution covering most of the local group spiral M 33 which, at a distance of 840 kpc, is close enough that individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs) can be identified. The goal of this work is to study the properties of the GMCs in this subsolar metallicity galaxy. The CPROPS (Cloud Properties) algorithm (Rosolowsky & Leroy 2006) was used to identify 337 GMCs in M 33, the largest sample to date in an external galaxy. The sample is used to study the GMC luminosity function, or mass spectrum under the assumption of a constant N(H2)/ICO ratio. We find that n(L)dL = K*L^(-2.0\pm0.1) for the entire sample. However, when the sample is divided into inner and outer disk samples, the exponent changes from 1.6 \pm 0.2 for the centre 2 kpc to 2.3 \pm 0.2 for galactocentric distances larger than 2 kpc. Based on the emission in the FUV, Halpha, 8mu, and 24mu bands, each cloud was classified in terms of its star forming activity - no star formation, embedded, or exposed star formation (visible in FUV and Halpha). At least one sixth of the clouds had no (massive) star formation, suggesting that the average time required for star formation to start is about one sixth of the total time for which the object is identifiable as a GMC. The clouds without star formation have significantly lower CO luminosities than those with star formation, whether embedded or exposed, presumably related to the lack of heating sources. Taking the cloud sample as a whole, the main non-trivial correlation was the decrease in cloud CO brightness (or luminosity) with galactocentric radius. Power spectra of de-projected images of late-type galaxies in gas and/or dust emission are very useful diagnostics of the dynamics and stability of their interstellar medium. Previous studies have shown that the power spectra can be approximated as two power-laws, a shallow one at large scales (larger than 500 pc) and a steeper one at small scales, with the break between the two corresponding to the line-of-sight thickness of the galaxy disk. We present a thorough analysis of the power spectra of the dust and gas emission at several wavelengths in the nearby galaxy M33. In particular, we use the recently obtained images at five wavelengths by PACS and SPIRE onboard Herschel. The large dynamical range (2-3 dex in scale) of most images allow us to determine clearly the change in slopes from -1.5 to -4, with some variations with wavelength. The break scale is increasing with wavelength, from 100 pc at 24 and 100micron to 350 pc at 500micron, suggesting that the cool dust lies in a thicker disk than the warm dust, may be due to star formation more confined to the plane. The slope at small scale tends to be steeper at longer wavelength, meaning that the warmer dust is more concentrated in clumps. Numerical simulations of an isolated late-type galaxy, rich in gas and with no bulge, like M33, are carried out, in order to better interpret these observed results. Varying the star formation and feedback parameters, it is possible to obtain a range of power-spectra, with two power-law slopes and breaks, which nicely bracket the data. The small-scale power-law is indeed reflecting the 3D behaviour of the gas layer, steepening strongly while the feedback smoothes the structures, by increasing the gas turbulence. M33 appears to correspond to a fiducial model with an SFR of $\sim$ 0.7 Mo/yr, with 10% supernovae energy coupled to the gas kinematics., Comment: 11 pages, 24 figures, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

To study the usefulness of \CFP\ as a tracer of the regions where C\p\ and \HH\ coexist in the interstellar medium. We used the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to synthesize \CFP\ J=1-0 absorption at 102.6 GHz toward the core of the distant HII region W49N at l = 43.2\degr, b=0.0\degr, and we modeled the fluorine chemistry in diffuse/translucent molecular gas. We detected \CFP\ absorption over a broad range of velocity showing that \CFP\ is widespread in the \HH-bearing Galactic disk gas. Originally detected in dense gas in the Orion Bar and Horsehead PDR, \CFP\ was subsequently detected in absorption from diffuse and translucent clouds seen toward \bll\ and 3C111. Here we showed that \CFP\ is distributed throughout the diffuse and translucent molecular disk gas with N(\CFP)/N(\HH) $= 1.5-2.0\times10^{-10}$, increasing to N(\CFP)/N(\HH) $= 3.5\times10^{-10}$ in one cloud at 39 \kms\ having higher N(\HH) $\approx 3\times10^{21}\pcc$. Models of the fluorine chemistry reproduce the observed column densities and relative abundance of HF, from which \CFP\ forms, but generally overpredict the the column density of \CFP\ by factors of 1.4-4. We show that a free space photodissociation rate $\Gamma \ga 10^{-9}\ps$, comparable to that of CH, might account for much of the discrepancy but a recent calculation finds a value about ten times smaller. In the heavily blended and kinematically complex spectra seen toward W49, \CFP\ absorption primarily traces the peaks of the \HH\ distribution., Comment: A&A in press

Context: The emission line of [CII] at 158 micron is one of the strongest cooling lines of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. Aims: Disentangling the relative contributions of the different ISM phases to [CII] emission, is a major topic of the HerM33es program, a Herschel key project to study the ISM in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. Methods: Using PACS, we have mapped the emission of [CII] 158 micron, [OI] 63 micron, and other FIR lines in a 2'x2' region of the northern spiral arm of M33, centered on the HII region BCLMP302. At the peak of H-alpha emission, we have observed in addition a velocity resolved [CII] spectrum using HIFI. We use scatterplots to compare these data with PACS 160 micron continuum maps, and with maps of CO and HI data, at a common resolution of 12 arcsec or 50 pc. Maps of H-alpha and 24 micron emission observed with Spitzer are used to estimate the SFR. We have created maps of the [CII] and [OI] 63 micron emission and detected [NII] 122 micron and NIII 57 micron at individual positions. Results: The [CII] line observed with HIFI is significantly broader than that of CO, and slightly blue-shifted. In addition, there is little spatial correlation between [CII] observed with PACS and CO over the mapped region. There is even less spatial correlation between [CII] and the atomic gas traced by HI. Detailed comparison of the observed intensities towards the HII region with models of photo ionization and photon dominated regions, confirms that a significant fraction, 20--30%, of the observed [CII] emission stems from the ionized gas and not from the molecular cloud. The gas heating efficiency, using the ratio between [CII] and the TIR as a proxy, varies between 0.07 and 1.5%, with the largest variations found outside the HII region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 12 pages, 12 figures

Does star formation proceed in the same way in large spirals such as the Milky Way and in smaller chemically younger galaxies? Earlier work suggests a more rapid transformation of H$_2$ into stars in these objects but (1) a doubt remains about the validity of the H$_2$ mass estimates and (2) there is currently no explanation for why star formation should be more efficient. M~33, a local group spiral with a mass $\sim 10$\% and a metallicity half that of the Galaxy, represents a first step towards the metal poor Dwarf Galaxies. We have searched for molecular clouds in the outer disk of M~33 and present here a set of detections of both $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO, including the only detections (for both lines) beyond the R$_{25}$ radius in a subsolar metallicity galaxy. The spatial resolution enables mass estimates for the clouds and thus a measure of the $N({\rm H}_2) / I_{\rm CO}$ ratio, which in turn enables a more reliable calculation of the H$_2$ mass. Our estimate for the outer disk of M~33 is $N({\rm H}_2) / I_{\rm CO(1-0)} \sim 5 \times 10^{20} \,{\rm cm^{-2}/(K{\rm \ km \ s^{-1}})}$ with an estimated uncertainty of a factor $\le 2$. While the $^{12/13}$CO line ratios do not provide a reliable measure of $N({\rm H}_2) / I_{\rm CO}$, the values we find are slightly greater than Galactic and corroborate a somewhat higher $N({\rm H}_2) / I_{\rm CO}$ value. Comparing the CO observations with other tracers of the interstellar medium, no reliable means of predicting where CO would be detected was identified. In particular, CO detections were often not directly on local HI or FIR or H$\alpha$ peaks, although generally in regions with FIR emission and high HI column density. The results presented here provide support for the quicker transformation of H$_2$ into stars in M~33 than in large local universe spirals.

Do molecular clouds collapse to form stars at the same rate in all environments? In large spiral galaxies, the rate of transformation of H2 into stars (hereafter SFE) varies little. However, the SFE in distant objects (z~1) is much higher than in the large spiral disks that dominate the local universe. Some small local group galaxies share at least some of the characteristics of intermediate-redshift objects, such as size or color. Recent work has suggested that the Star Formation Efficiency (SFE, defined as the SFRate per unit H2) in local Dwarf galaxies may be as high as in the distant objects. A fundamental difficulty in these studies is the independent measure of the H2 mass in metal-deficient environments. At 490 kpc, NGC6822 is an excellent choice for this study; it has been mapped in the CO(2-1) line using the multibeam receiver HERA on the 30 meter IRAM telescope, yielding the largest sample of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in this galaxy. Despite the much lower metallicity, we find no clear difference in the properties of the GMCs in NGC 6822 and those in the Milky Way except lower CO luminosities for a given mass. Several independent methods indicate that the total H2 mass in NGC 6822 is about 5 x 10^6 Msun in the area we mapped and less than 10^7 Msun in the whole galaxy. This corresponds to a NH2/ICO ~ 4 x 10^{21} cm^-2 /(Kkm/s) over large scales, such as would be observed in distant objects, and half that in individual GMCs. No evidence was found for H2 without CO emission. Our simulations of the radiative transfer in clouds are entirely compatible with these NH2/ICO values. The SFE implied is a factor 5 - 10 higher than what is observed in large local universe spirals.
