Abstract

We present new parsec-scale resolution data from a multiphase study of the ISM in the walls of Galactic supershells. HI synthesis images and CO survey data reveal a wealth of substructure, including dense-tipped fingers and extended molecular clouds embedded in shell walls. We briefly consider formation scenarios for these features, and suggest that both the interaction of an expanding shell with pre-existing dense clouds, as well as in-situ formation of CNM and molecular gas, are likely to be relevant. Future work will also examine the role of instabilities in structure formation and breakup, and will investigate the presence of high-altitude gas associated with supershells and chimneys. Abstract

Bubbles and Superbubbles are among the largest and most energetic structures in the Interstellar Medium (ISM). It is thought that most bubbles are formed from the combined effects of stellar winds and supernovae, which plow through the ISM, sweeping up matter in to dense atomic hydrogen (H I) shell walls and heating and ionising the gas left behind. Although this explanation works clearly for some of the smaller objects, it is hard to understand how many superbubbles apparently require hundreds to thousands of massive stars to explain their sizes. In some galaxies, like the Large Magellanic Cloud, the H I structure of the disk is dominated by H I shells. Similarly, the ISM of the Milky Way is riddled with tens, perhaps hundreds, of H I shells. In the Milky Way, as well as in the nearest disk galaxies, there is clear evidence of superbubbles that have grown so large as to break out of the disk. It would seem, then, that not only do these objects have a significant impact on the disk, they provide an invaluable source of energy for the halo. Abstract

The cosmic star formation history is known to evolve strongly, by an order of magnitude, out to a redshift about unity. Over the same time period, the average neutral gas density in galaxies evolves only marginally, by a factor of about two. The star formation rate density is high enough that the observed neutral gas in galaxies would be exhausted within about a gigayear in the absence of replenishment, and the question becomes one of what form the replenishment takes. For the observed neutral hydrogen mass density to remain constant or only slowly evolving, the replenishment must balance the consumption. Observations of gas infall and outflows in nearby galaxies suggest there may be insufficient infalling material to balance the consumption, though, raising the question of whether a new mechanism for replenishment may be required. We present a mechanism for replenishment that is associated with star formation, supershells within galaxies, and discuss the advantages and limitations of this mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have detected hundreds of HI clouds in the lower Galactic halo within the Galactic All-Sky Survey pilot region, a region spanning 325° ≤ l ≤ 343° and |b| ≤ 20°. The motions of these clouds are governed by Galactic rotation, they are seen within the disk and up to heights of 2.5 kpc, and they span a wide range of Galactocentric radii. However, these clouds are not uniformly distributed and appear to be associated with Galactic structures such as spiral arms or superbubbles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Through analysis of correlations within the longitude-velocity distribution of 6.7-GHz methanol masers, we identify density enhancements indicative of large-scale regions of enhanced star formation. In the context of the inner structure of our Galaxy these are interpreted as the starting points of the spiral arms and the interaction of the long Galactic bar with the 3-kpc arms. Signatures of a continuous 3-kpc arm structure are seen including a prominent tangent at -22° Galactic longitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
