Abstract

In a clear commitment for sustainability in the fisheries sector, Regional Administration for Economy and Industry of Xunta de Galicia and EnergyLab Technology Centre signed a cooperation agreement with the goal of performing a demonstration project based on the application of hybrid power supply systems in a fishing vessel. Such a project aims to analyze the feasibility of implementing hybridelectric powertrain systems in the Galician coastal fleet. The final purpose is the implementation of more efficient and environmental friendly propulsion systems within the marine industry. The project scope consists in defining a technical solution for the replacement of diesel propulsion system in a standard fishing vessel (12m. long), representative of the Galician inshore fleet, by a hybrid-electric system powered by three different types of energy sources.

Abstract

Aims. Recent observations of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) suggest aspherical explosions. Globally, aspherical structures in SN explosions are thought to encode information regarding the underlying explosion mechanism. However, the exact explosion geometries from the inner cores to the outer envelopes are poorly understood. Methods. Here, we present photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations of the Type IIP SN 2021yja and discuss its explosion geometry in comparison to those of other Type IIP SNe that show large-scale aspherical structures in their hydrogen envelopes (SNe 2012aw, 2013ej and 2017gmr). Results. During the plateau phase, SNe 2012aw and 2021yja exhibit high continuum polarization characterized by two components with perpendicular polarization angles. This behavior can be interpreted as being due to a bipolar explosion, where the SN ejecta is composed of a polar (energetic) component and an equatorial (bulk) component. In such a bipolar explosion, an aspherical axis created by the polar ejecta would dominate at early phases, while the perpendicular axis along the equatorial ejecta would emerge at late phases after the photosphere in the polar ejecta has receded. Our interpretation of the explosions in SNe 2012aw and 2021yja as bipolar is also supported by other observational properties, including the time evolution of the line velocities and the line shapes in the nebular spectra. The polarization of other Type IIP SNe that show large-scale aspherical structures in the hydrogen envelope (SNe 2013ej and 2017gmr) is also consistent with the bipolar-explosion scenario, although this is not conclusive. Abstract

Context. A peculiar subtype of Type Ia supernovae (SNe), 03fg-like (super-Chandrasekhar) SNe, show different observational properties from prototypical Type Ia SNe: they typically have high luminosities at the light-curve peak, low expansion velocities, and strong carbon features. The origin of this class of Type Ia SNe has been actively debated. Recent nebular-phase infrared observations of the 03fg-like Type Ia SN 2022pul using the James Webb Space Telescope revealed large-scale asymmetries in the ejecta and the presence of the strong [Ne II] line at 12.81 μm, suggesting a violent merger of two white dwarfs as its origin. Aims. Polarimetry is another powerful tool for studying the overall ejecta asymmetries of spatially unresolved SNe. Here, we aim to check the universality of the violent merger scenario as the origin of 03fg-like Type Ia SNe, by studying their explosion geometries using polarimetry. Methods. In this Letter we present imaging-polarimetric observations of the two 03fg-like Type Ia SNe 2021zny and 2022ilv. Results. SNe 2021zny and 2022ilv show high intrinsic polarization (∼1%–∼2%), which might be composed of multiple components with different polarization angles. This indicates that they have complex aspherical structures in their ejecta, supporting the violent merger scenario for their origin. Abstract

SN 2020zbf is a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN) at z = 0.1947 that shows conspicuous C II features at early times, in contrast to the majority of H-poor SLSNe. Its peak magnitude is Mg = −21.2 mag and its rise time (≲26.4 days from first light) places SN 2020zbf among the fastest rising type I SLSNe. We used spectra taken from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared wavelengths to identify spectral features. We paid particular attention to the C II lines as they present distinctive characteristics when compared to other events. We also analyzed UV and optical photometric data and modeled the light curves considering three different powering mechanisms: radioactive decay of 56Ni, magnetar spin-down, and circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. The spectra of SN 2020zbf match the model spectra of a C-rich low-mass magnetar-powered supernova model well. This is consistent with our light curve modeling, which supports a magnetar-powered event with an ejecta mass Mej = 1.5 M⊙. However, we cannot discard the CSM-interaction model as it may also reproduce the observed features. The interaction with H-poor, carbon-oxygen CSM near peak light could explain the presence of C II emission lines. A short plateau in the light curve around 35–45 days after peak, in combination with the presence of an emission line at 6580 Å, can also be interpreted as being due to a late interaction with an extended H-rich CSM. Both the magnetar and CSM-interaction models of SN 2020zbf indicate that the progenitor mass at the time of explosion is between 2 and 5 M⊙. Modeling the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy reveals a host mass of 108.7M⊙, a star formation rate of 0.24−0.12+0.41M⊙ yr−1, and a metallicity of ∼0.4 Z⊙. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work presents the observations and analysis of ATLAS19dqr/SN 2019bkc, an extraordinary rapidly evolving transient event located in an isolated environment, tens of kiloparsecs from any likely host. Its light curves rise to maximum light in 5−6 d and then display a decline of Δm15 ∼ 5 mag. With such a pronounced decay, it has one of the most rapidly evolving light curves known for a stellar explosion. The early spectra show similarities to normal and “ultra-stripped” type Ic SNe, but the early nebular phase spectra, which were reached just over two weeks after explosion, display prominent calcium lines, marking SN 2019bkc as a Ca-rich transient. The Ca emission lines at this phase show an unprecedented and unexplained blueshift of 10 000–12 000 km s−1. Modelling of the light curve and the early spectra suggests that the transient had a low ejecta mass of 0.2−0.4 M⊙ and a low kinetic energy of (2−4) × 1050 erg, giving a specific kinetic energy Ek/Mej ∼ 1 [1051 erg]/M⊙. The origin of this event cannot be unambiguously defined. While the abundance distribution used to model the spectra marginally favours a progenitor of white dwarf origin through the tentative identification of Ar II, the specific kinetic energy, which is defined by the explosion mechanism, is found to be more similar to an ultra-stripped core-collapse events. SN 2019bkc adds to the diverse range of physical properties shown by Ca-rich events.

Abstract

Context. The statistical analysis of large sample of strong lensing events can be a powerful tool to extract astrophysical or cosmological valuable information. Their selection using submillimetre galaxies has been demonstrated to be very effective with more than ∼200 proposed candidates in the case of Herschel-ATLAS data and several tens in the case of the South Pole Telescope. However, the number of confirmed events is still relatively low, i.e. a few tens, mostly because of the lengthy observational validation process on individual events. Aims. In this work we propose a new methodology with a statistical selection approach to increase by a factor of ∼5 the number of such events within the Herschel-ATLAS data set. Although the methodology can be applied to address several selection problems, it has particular benefits in the case of the identification of strongly lensed galaxies: objectivity, minimal initial constrains in the main parameter space, and preservation of statistical properties. Methods. The proposed methodology is based on the Bhattacharyya distance as a measure of the similarity between probability distributions of properties of two different cross-matched galaxies. The particular implementation for the aim of this work is called SHALOS and it combines the information of four different properties of the pair of galaxies: angular separation, luminosity percentile, redshift, and the ratio of the optical to the submillimetre flux densities. Results. The SHALOS method provides a ranked list of strongly lensed galaxies. The number of candidates within ∼340 deg2 of the Herschel-ATLAS surveyed area for the final associated probability, Ptot >  0.7, is 447 and they have an estimated mean amplification factor of 3.12 for a halo with a typical cluster mass. Additional statistical properties of the SHALOS candidates, as the correlation function or the source number counts, are in agreement with previous results indicating the statistical lensing nature of the selected sample. Context. The nature of ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) sources is still a matter of debate. Studies of their counterparts in other spectral ranges will help to clarify the nature of those sources. Aims. Our goal was to identify and characterize the optical counterparts of five sources catalogued as ULXs. Methods. We obtained optical imaging and intermediate resolution spectroscopy of these optical counterparts. Results. Abstract

The bound-state energy spectrum for two-boson system with a fixed exchanged massive boson is investigated by considering the scalar Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation in Minkowski space within the ladder-approximation framework. The approach is extending to excited states a previous study performed for the ground state. The number of states in the spectrum is restricted by the coupling strength of the two-body interaction, as well as the mass of the exchanged boson. In the present approach, we use the Nakanishi Integral Representation and the formally exact null-plane projection. As usual a comparison between eigenvalues obtained in the Minkowski and Euclidean space is presented. Within such scheme, the light-front momentum-space valence wave functions are obtained for the ground and excited states, together with the corresponding quantities in the impactparameter space. Among relevant features emerging from this study, we can point out the node structure of light-front wave function and the leading exponential fall-off of the valence wave function in the impact-parameter space.
