Context. A growing body of evidence suggests that some, if not all, scattering regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are clumpy. The inner AGN components cannot be spatially resolved with current instruments and must be studied by numerical simulations of observed spectroscopy and polarization data. Aims. We run radiative transfer models in the optical/UV for a variety of AGN reprocessing regions with di erent distributions of clumpy scattering media. We obtain geometry-sensitive polarization spectra and images to improve our previous AGN models and their comparison with the observations. Methods. We use the latest public version 1.2 of the Monte Carlo code stokes presented in the first two papers of this series to model AGN reprocessing regions of increasing morphological complexity. We replace previously uniform-density media with up to thousands of constant-density clumps. We couple a continuum source to fragmented equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal obscuring dust regions and investigate a wide range of geometries. We also consider different levels of fragmentation in each scattering region to evaluate the importance of fragmentation for the net polarization of the AGN. Results. In comparison with uniform-density models, equatorial distributions of gas and dust clouds result in grayer spectra and show a decrease in the net polarization percentage at all lines of sight. The resulting polarization position angle depends on the morphology of the clumpy structure, with extended tori favoring parallel polarization while compact tori produce orthogonal polarization position angles. In the case of polar scattering regions, fragmentation increases the net polarization unless the cloud filling factor is small. A complete AGN model constructed from the individual, fragmented regions can produce low polarization percentages (<2%), with a parallel polarization angle for observer inclinations up to 70° for a torus half opening angle of 60°. For type-2 viewing angles the polarization switches to perpendicular and rises to ~50%. Conclusions. Our modeling shows that the introduction of fragmented dusty tori significantly alters the resulting net polarization of an AGN. Comparison of our models to polarization observations of large AGN samples greatly favors geometrically compact clumpy tori over extended ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The innermost parts of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are believed to be comprised of several emission and scattering media coupled by radiative processes. These regions generally cannot be spatially resolved. Spectropolarimetric observations give important information about the reprocessing geometry. Aims. We aim to obtain a coherent model of the polarization signature resulting from the radiative coupling between the components, to compare our results with polarimetry of thermal AGNs, and thereby to put constraints on the geometry. Methods. We used a new public version of stokes, a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code presented in the first paper of this series. The code has been significantly improved for computational speed and polarization imaging has been implemented. The imaging capability helps to improve understanding of the contributions of different components to the spatially-integrated flux. We coupled continuum sources with a variety of reprocessing regions such as equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal obscuring dust and studied the resulting polarization. We explored combinations and computed a grid of thermal AGN models for different halfopening angles of the torus and polar winds. We also considered a range of optical depths for equatorial and polar electron scattering and investigated how the model geometry influences the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy for thermal AGNs (type-1 AGNs tend to be polarized parallel to the axis of the torus while type-2 AGNs tend to be polarized perpendicular to it). Results. We put new constrains on the inflowing medium within the inner walls of the torus. To reproduce the observed polarization in type-1 objects, the inflow should be confined to the common equatorial plane of the torus and the accretion disk and have a radial optical depth of 1 < τ < 3. Our modeling of type-1 AGNs indicates that the torus is more likely to have a large (>60°) half-opening angle. Polarization perpendicular to the axis of the torus may arise at a type-1 viewing angle for a torus half-opening angle of 30°-45° or polar outflows with an optical depth near unity. Our modeling suggests that most Seyfert-2 AGN must have a half-opening angle >60° to match the expected level of perpendicular polarization. If outflows are collimated by the torus inner walls, they must not be optically thick (τ < 1) to preserve the polarization dichotomy. Then, varying the wind's optical depth does not affect the degree of polarization of type-2 thermal AGNs but it has a significant impact on the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy when τ > 0.3. Aims. We investigate the discrepancy between the predicted size of accretion disks (ADs) in quasars and the observed sizes as deduced from gravitational microlensing studies. Specifically, we aim to understand whether the discrepancy is due to an inadequacy of current AD models or whether it can be accounted for by the contribution of diffuse broad-line region (BLR) emission to the observed continuum signal. Methods. We employed state-of-the-art emission models for quasars and high-resolution microlensing magnification maps and compared the attributes of their magnification-distribution functions to those obtained for pure Shakura-Sunyaev disk models. We tested the validity of our detailed model predictions by examining their agreement with published microlensing estimates of the half-light radius of the continuum-emitting region in a sample of lensed quasars. Results. Our findings suggest that the steep disk temperature profiles found by microlensing studies are erroneous as the data are largely affected by the BLR, which does not obey a temperature-wavelength relation. We show with a sample of 12 lenses that the mere contribution of the BLR to the continuum signal is able to account for the deduced overestimation factors as well as the implied size-wavelength relation. Conclusions. Our study points to a likely solution to the AD size conundrum in lensed quasars, which is related to the interpretation of the observed signals rather than to disk physics. Our findings significantly weaken the tension between AD theory and observations, and suggest that microlensing can provide a new means to probe the hitherto poorly constrained diffuse BLR emission around accreting black holes. Context. Optical observations cannot resolve the structure of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a unified model for AGN was inferred mostly from indirect methods, such as spectroscopy and variability studies. Optical reverberation mapping allowed us to constrain the spatial dimension of the broad emission line region and thereby to measure the mass of supermassive black holes. Recently, reverberation was also applied to the polarized signal emerging from di erent AGN components. In principle, this should allow us to measure the spatial dimensions of the sub-parsec reprocessing media. Aims. We conduct numerical modeling of polarization reverberation and provide theoretical predictions for the polarization time lag induced by di erent AGN components. The model parameters are adjusted to the observational appearance of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. Methods. We modeled scattering-induced polarization and tested di erent geometries for the circumnuclear dust component. Our tests included the e ects of clumpiness and di erent dust prescriptions. To further extend the model, we also explored the e ects of additional ionized winds stretched along the polar direction and of an equatorial scattering ring that is responsible for the polarization angle observed in pole-on AGN. The simulations were run using a time-dependent version of the stokes code. Results. Our modeling confirms the previously found polarization characteristics as a function of the observer's viewing angle. When the dust adopts a flared-disk geometry, the lags reveal a clear di erence between type 1 and type 2 AGN. This distinction is less clear for a torus geometry where the time lag is more sensitive to the geometry and optical depth of the inner surface layers of the funnel. The presence of a scattering equatorial ring and ionized outflows increased the recorded polarization time lags, and the polar outflows smooths out dependence on viewing angle, especially for the higher optical depth of the wind (τ = 0.3). Conclusions. Together with other AGN observables, the polarization time lag places new, independent "seismological" constraints on the inner geometry of AGN. If we conduct time-dependent spectropolarimetric observing campaigns of AGN, this method has a high potential for a census of supermassive black holes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In November 2020, a new, bright object, eRASSt J234402.9352640, was discovered in the second all-sky survey of SRG/eROSITA. The object brightened by a factor of at least 150 in 0.2-2.0 keV flux compared to an upper limit found six months previous, reaching an observed peak of 1:76+0:03 0:24 1011 erg cm2 s1. The X-ray ignition is associated with a galaxy at z = 0:10, making the peak luminosity log10(L0:2 keV=[ergs]) = 44:7 ± 0:1. Around the time of the rise in X-ray flux, the nucleus of the galaxy brightened by approximately 3 mag. in optical photometry, after correcting for the host contribution. We present X-ray follow-up data from Swift, XMM-Newton, and NICER, which reveal a very soft spectrum as well as strong 0.2-2.0 keV flux variability on multiple timescales. Optical spectra taken in the weeks after the ignition event show a blue continuum with broad, asymmetric Balmer emission lines, and high-ionisation ([OIII]--4959,5007) and low-ionisation ([NII]-6585, [SII]--6716,6731) narrow emission lines. Following the peak in the optical light curve, the X-ray, UV, and optical photometry all show a rapid decline. The X-ray light curve shows a decrease in luminosity of ~0.45 over 33 days and the UV shows a drop of ~0.35 over the same period. eRASSt J234402.9352640 also shows a brightening in the mid-infrared, likely powered by a dust echo of the luminous ignition. We find no evidence in Fermi-LAT -ray data for jet-like emission. The event displays characteristics of a tidal disruption event (TDE) as well as of an active galactic nucleus (AGN), complicating the classification of this transient. Based on the softness of the X-ray spectrum, the presence of high-ionisation optical emission lines, and the likely infrared echo, we find that a TDE within a turned-off AGN best matches our observations. Aims. We report the results from a photometric reverberation mapping campaign carried out with the C18 telescope at the Wise Observatory from 2019 to 2020, targeting the active galactic nucleus (AGN) MCG 08-11-011. The monitoring was conducted on a daily basis with specially designed narrow-band filters, spanning from optical to near-infrared wavelengths (~4000 to 8000 Å) and avoiding prominent broad emission lines. We aim to measure inter-band continuum time lags, determine the size-wavelength relation, and estimate the host-subtracted AGN luminosity for this system. Methods. We used the point-spread function photometry to extract the continuum light curves and measure the inter-band time lags using several methods, including the interpolated cross-correlation function, the z-transformed discrete correlation function, a von Neumann estimator, JAVELIN (in spectroscopic and photometric mode), MICA, and a multivariate correlation function. Results. We find wavelength-dependent lags, -), up to ~7 days between the multiband light curves of MCG 08-11-011. The observed lags are larger than predictions based on standard thin-disk theory by a factor of ~37. We discern a significantly steeper (-4:74) size-wavelength relation than the -4=3 expected for a geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disk, which may result from the contribution of diffuse continuum emission to the flux. Context. Some accreting black holes exhibit much stronger variability patterns than the usual stochastic variations. Radiation pressure instability is one of the proposed mechanisms that might account for this effect. Aims. We model luminosity changes for objects with a black hole mass of 10, 105, and 107 solar masses, using the time-dependent evolution of an accretion disk that is unstable as a result of the dominant radiation pressure. We concentrate on the outburst timescales. We explore the influence of the hot coronal flow above the cold disk, the inner purely hot flow, and the effect of the magnetic field on the time evolution of the disk-corona system. For intermediate-mass black holes and active galactic nuclei, we also explore the role of the disk outer radius because a disk that is fed by tidal disruption events (TDE) can be quite small. Methods. We used a 1D vertically integrated time-dependent numerical scheme that models the simultaneous evolution of the disk and corona, which is coupled by the vertical mass exchange. We parameterized the strength of the large-scale toroidal magnetic fields according to a local accretion rate. We also discuss a possible inner optically thin flow, the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). This flow would require modification of the inner boundary condition of the cold disk flow. For the set of the global parameters, we calculated the variability timescales and outburst amplitudes of the disk and the corona. Results. We found that the role of the inner ADAF and the accreting corona are relatively unimportant, but the outburst character strongly depends on the magnetic field and on the outer radius of the disk if this radius is smaller (due to the TDE phenomenon) than the size of the instability zone in a stationary disk with infinite radius. For microquasars, the dependence on the magnetic field is monotonic, and the period decreases with the field strength. For higher black hole masses, the dependence is nonmonotonic, and an initial rise of the period is later replaced with a relatively rapid decrease as the magnetic field continues to rise. A still stronger magnetic field stabilizes the disk. When we assumed a smaller disk outer radiusfor 105 and 107 M, the outbursts were shorter and led to complex multiscale outbursts for some parameters, thus approaching the behavior of deterministic chaos. Conclusions. Our computations confirm that the radiation pressure instability model can account for heartbeat states in microquasars. The rapid variability detected in intermediate-mass black holes in the form of quasi-periodic eruptions can be consistent with the model, but only when it is combined with the TDE phenomenon. The yearly repeating variability in changing-look active galactic nuclei in our model also requires a small outer radius either due to the recent TDE or due to the gap in the disk that is related to a secondary black hole. We present photometric and spectroscopic data on three extragalactic luminous red novae (LRNe): AT 2018bwo, AT 2021afy, and AT 2021blu. AT 2018bwo was discovered in NGC 45 (at about 6.8 Mpc) a few weeks after the outburst onset. During the monitoring period, the transient reached a peak luminosity of 1040 erg s−1. AT 2021afy, hosted by UGC 10043 (∼49.2 Mpc), showed a double-peaked light curve, with the two peaks reaching a similar luminosity of 2.1(±0.6)×1041 erg s−1. Finally, for AT 2021blu in UGC 5829 (∼8.6 Mpc), the pre-outburst phase was well-monitored by several photometric surveys, and the object showed a slow luminosity rise before the outburst. The light curve of AT 2021blu was sampled with an unprecedented cadence until the object disappeared behind the Sun, and it was then recovered at late phases. The light curve of LRN AT 2021blu shows a double peak, with a prominent early maximum reaching a luminosity of 6.5 × 1040 erg s−1, which is half of that of AT 2021afy. The spectra of AT 2021afy and AT 2021blu display the expected evolution for LRNe: a blue continuum dominated by prominent Balmer lines in emission during the first peak, and a redder continuum consistent with that of a K-type star with narrow absorption metal lines during the second, broad maximum. The spectra of AT 2018bwo are markedly different, with a very red continuum dominated by broad molecular features in absorption. As these spectra closely resemble those of LRNe after the second peak, AT 2018bwo was probably discovered at the very late evolutionary stages. This would explain its fast evolution and the spectral properties compatible with that of an M-type star. From the analysis of deep frames of the LRN sites years before the outburst, and considerations of the light curves, the quiescent progenitor systems of the three LRNe were likely massive, with primaries ranging from about 13 M⊙ for AT 2018bwo, to 14−1+4 14 − 1 + 4 $ 14_{-1}^{+4} $ M⊙ for AT 2021blu, and over 40 M⊙ for AT 2021afy. This paper is the seventh work in the MUse RAdio Loud Emission lines Snapshot (MURALES) project series, presenting the results of observations obtained with the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph of 3C radio sources. Here, we discuss the optical spectral properties of the nuclei of 26 objects with 0.3 < z < 0.82 (median redshift 0.51). At these redshifts, the Hα and [N II] emission lines are not covered by optical spectra and alternative diagnostic diagrams are needed to separate the different spectroscopic sub-classes. We derived a robust spectroscopic classification into high and low-excitation galaxies (HEGs and LEGs) by only using the ratios of emission lines in the rest-frame UV and the blue portion of the spectra. A key result of this study is that FR II LEGs are also found at the highest level of radio power (up to L178 MHz ∼ 2 × 1035 erg s−1 Hz−1), placing them among the most luminous radio sources in the Universe. Furthermore, their fraction within the FR II RG population does not strongly depend on radio luminosity. This suggests that the jet properties in powerful FR II radio sources do not depend on the accretion mode or on the structure of the accretion disk – as would otherwise be expected if the jet launching process were due to the extraction of the rotational energy of the supermassive black hole. The alternative possibility of recurrent transitions between a LEG and a HEG phase is disfavored based on the variation timescales of the various active galactic nucleus (AGN) components. Context. Hyperluminous quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are ideal laboratories to investigate active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback mechanisms. Their formidable energy release causes powerful winds at all scales, and thus the maximum feedback is expected. Aims. Our aim is to derive the mean spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 WISE-SDSS selected hyperluminous (WISSH) quasars. Since the SED provides a direct way to investigate the AGN structure, our goal is to understand if quasars at the bright end of the luminosity function have peculiar properties compared to the bulk of the QSO population. Methods. We collected all the available photometry, from X-rays to the far-infrared (FIR); each WISSH quasar is observed in at least 12 different bands. We then built a mean intrinsic SED after correcting for the dust extinction, absorption and emission lines, and intergalactic medium absorption. We also derived bolometric, IR band, and monochromatic luminosities together with bolometric corrections at λ = 5100 Å and 3 μm. We define a new relation for the 3 μm bolometric correction. Results. We find that the mean SED of hyperluminous WISSH QSOs shows some differences compared to that of less luminous sources (i.e., a lower X-ray emission and a near- and mid-IR excess which can be explained assuming a larger dust contribution. WISSH QSOs have stronger emission from both warm (T ∼ 500 − 600 K) and very hot (T ≥ 1000 K) dust, the latter being responsible for shifting the typical dip of the AGN SED from 1.3 μm to 1.1 μm. We also derived the mean SEDs of two subsamples created based on their spectral features (presence of broad absorption lines and equivalent width of CIV line). We confirm that broad absorption lines (BALs) are X-ray weak and that they have a reddened UV-optical continuum. We also find that BALs tend to have stronger emission from the hot dust component. For sources with a weaker CIV line, our main result is the confirmation of their lower X-ray emission. By populating the LIR vs. z diagram proposed by Symeonidis & Page (MNRAS, 503, 3992), we found that ∼90% of WISSH QSOs with z ≥ 3.5 have their FIR emission dominated by star-forming activity. Conclusions. This analysis suggests that hyperluminous QSOs have a peculiar SED compared to less luminous objects. It is therefore critical to use SED templates constructed exclusively from very bright quasar samples (such as this one) when dealing with particularly luminous sources, such as high-redshift QSOs. Stripped-envelope stars can be observed as Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars or as less luminous hydrogen-poor stars with low mass-loss rates and transparent winds. Both types are potential progenitors of Type I core-collapse supernovae (SNe). We used grids of core-collapse models obtained from single helium stars at different metallicities to study the effects of metallicity on the transients and remnants these stars produce. We characterised the surface and core properties of our core-collapse models and investigated their 'explodability' using three criteria. In the cases where explosions are predicted, we estimated the ejecta mass, explosion energy, nickel mass, and neutron star (NS) mass. Otherwise, we predicted the mass of the resulting black hole (BH). We constructed a simplified population model and find that the properties of SNe and compact objects depend strongly on metallicity. The ejecta masses and explosion energies for Type Ic SNe are best reproduced by models with Z = 0.04 that exhibit strong winds during core helium burning. This implies that either their mass-loss rates are underestimated or that Type Ic SN progenitors experience mass loss through other mechanisms before exploding. The distributions of ejecta masses, explosion energies, and nickel mass for Type Ib SNe are not well reproduced by progenitor models with WR mass loss, but are better reproduced if we assume no mass loss in progenitors with luminosities below the minimum WR star luminosity. We find that Type Ic SNe become more common as metallicity increases, and that the vast majority of progenitors of Type Ib SNe must be transparent-wind stripped-envelope stars. We find that several models with pre-collapse CO masses of up to ∼30 M⊙ may form ∼3 M⊙ BHs in fallback SNe. This may have important consequences for our understanding of SNe, binary BH and NS systems, X-ray binary systems, and gravitational wave transients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We present a novel probabilistic flux variation gradient (PFVG) approach to separate the contributions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and host galaxies in the context of photometric reverberation mapping (PRM) of AGN. Aims. We explored the ability of recovering the fractional contribution in a model-independent way using the entire set of light curves obtained through different filters and photometric apertures simultaneously. Methods. The method is based on the observed "bluer when brighter" phenomenon that is attributed to the superimposition of a two-component structure; the red host galaxy, which is constant in time, and the varying blue AGN. We describe the PFVG mathematical formalism and demonstrate its performance using simulated light curves and available PRM observations. Results. The new probabilistic approach is able to recover host-galaxy fluxes to within 1% precision as long as the light curves do not show a significant contribution from time delays. This represents a significant improvement with respect to previous applications of the traditional FVG method to PRM data. Conclusions. The proposed PFVG provides an efficient and accurate way to separate the AGN and host-galaxy luminosities in PRM monitoring data. The method will be especially helpful in the case of large upcoming photometric survey telescopes such as the public optical/near-infrared Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Aims. Mrk 926 is known to be a highly variable active galactic nucleus. Furthermore, it is known to show very broad line profiles. We intended to study the continuum and line profile variations of this object with high temporal resolution in order to determine its broad-line region structure and to derive its black hole mass. Methods. We carried out a high-cadence spectroscopic variability campaign of Mrk 926 with the 10m HET telescope, aided by photometric V-band data taken with the C18 telescope at the Wise Observatory, over a period of about five months. We extracted spectroscopic continuum and line light curves, and computed cross-correlation functions (CCFs) as well as velocity-resolved CCFs with respect to the combined spectroscopic and photometric V-band light curve. Results. The continuum luminosity of Mrk 926 showed a drastic decrease during our campaign. The luminosity dropped to less than 50% of its original luminosity within only 2.5 months. Furthermore, the spectra of Mrk 926 show complex and very broad Balmer line profiles, including outer Balmer satellites ranging from ±5000 to ±13 000 km s−1. The integrated Hα, Hβ, and He Iλ5876 line light curves are delayed relative to the continuum light curve. The Hα and Hβ lines show two velocity-delay structures in the central part of their line profile (within ±5000 km s−1), at ∼10 and ∼57 light-days and at ∼5 and ∼48 light-days, respectively. These structures might be interpreted as the upper and lower halves of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane, which might be the signature of a line-emitting ring, inclined by ∼50° to the line of sight and orbiting the black hole at radii, R, of 33.5 and 26.5 light-days. We determined continuum luminosities, log(λ Lλ/erg s−1), of 43.68–44.13, which are in good agreement with the established RBLR − LAGN relation. Adopting delays of 33.5 and 26.5 days for Hα and Hβ, respectively, we derive a black hole mass of (1.1 ± 0.2)×108 M⊙; this indicates a low Eddington ratio, which decreased from 8 to 3 percent during our campaign. The Balmer satellite components show a higher correlation coefficient with respect to the continuum than the central line profile, and their response to the continuum variations is on the order of only 3 − 5 days. We attribute this to the central line segment and the Balmer satellites having different, spatially distinct regions of origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the accretion disc structure in the doubly imaged lensed quasar SDSS J1339+1310 using r-band light curves and UV-visible to near-IR spectra from the first 11 observational seasons after its discovery. The 2009−2019 light curves displayed pronounced microlensing variations on different timescales, and this microlensing signal permitted us to constrain the half-light radius of the 1930 Å continuum-emitting region. Assuming an accretion disc with an axis inclined at 60° to the line of sight, we obtained log(r1/2/cm) = 15.4−0.4+0.93 log r 1 / 2 / cm = 15. 4 − 0.4 + 0.3 $ {\log \left(r_{1/2}/\mathrm{cm} \right)} = 15.4^{+0.3}_{-0.4} $. We also estimated the central black hole mass from spectroscopic data. The width of the C IV, Mg II, and Hβ emission lines, and the continuum luminosity at 1350, 3000, and 5100 Å, led to log(MBH/M⊙) = 8.6 ± 0.4. Thus, hot gas responsible for the 1930 Å continuum emission is likely orbiting a 4.0 × 108 M⊙ black hole at an r1/2 of only a few tens of Schwarzschild radii. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The density of the ambient medium around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the way it varies with distance plays an important role in our understanding of the inflow-outflow mechanisms in the Galactic centre (GC). This dependence is often fitted by spherical power-law profiles based on observations in the X-ray, infrared (IR), submillimetre (submm), and radio domains. Aims. Nevertheless, the density profile is poorly constrained at the intermediate scales of 1000 Schwarzschild radii (Rs). Here we independently constrain the spherical density profile using the stellar bow shock of the star S2 which orbits the SMBH at the GC with the pericentre distance of 14.4 mas (∼1500 Rs). Methods. Assuming an elliptical orbit, we apply celestial mechanics and the theory of bow shocks that are at ram pressure equilibrium. We analyse the measured IR flux density and magnitudes of S2 in the L′-band (3.8 micron) obtained over seven epochs in the years between 2004–2018. We put an upper limit on the emission from S2's associated putative bow shock and constrain the density profile of the ambient medium. Results. We detect no significant change in S2 flux density until the recent periapse in May 2018. The intrinsic flux variability of S2 is at the level of 2–3%. Based on the dust-extinction model, the upper limit on the number density at the S2 periapse is ∼1.87  ×  109 cm−3, which yields a density slope of at most 3.20. Using the synchrotron bow-shock emission, we obtain the ambient density of ≲1.01  ×  105 cm−3 and a slope of ≲1.47. These values are consistent with a wide variety of media from hot accretion flows to potentially colder and denser media comparable in properties to broad-line-region clouds. However, a standard thin disc can be excluded at the distance of S2's pericentre. Conclusions. With the current photometry sensitivity of 0.01 mag, we are not able to make stringent constraints on the density of the ambient medium in the GC using S2-star observations. We can distinguish between hot accretion flows and thin, cold discs, where the latter can be excluded at the scale of the S2 periapse. Future observations of stars in the S cluster using instruments such as Mid-IR Extremely Large Telescope Imager and Spectrograph at Extremely Large Telescope with the photometric sensitivity of as much as 10−3 mag will allow the GC medium to be probed at intermediate scales at densities as low as ∼700 cm−3 in case of non-thermal bow-shock emission. The new instrumentation, in combination with discoveries of stars with smaller pericentre distances, will help to independently constrain the density profile around Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We present new near-infrared VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric spectra that spatially resolve the broad Brγ emission line in the nucleus of the active galaxy IRAS 09149−6206. We use these data to measure the size of the broad line region (BLR) and estimate the mass of the central black hole. Using an improved phase calibration method that reduces the differential phase uncertainty to 0.05° per baseline across the spectrum, we detect a differential phase signal that reaches a maximum of ∼0.5° between the line and continuum. This represents an offset of ∼120 μas (0.14 pc) between the BLR and the centroid of the hot dust distribution traced by the 2.3 μm continuum. The offset is well within the dust sublimation region, which matches the measured ∼0.6 mas (0.7 pc) diameter of the continuum. A clear velocity gradient, almost perpendicular to the offset, is traced by the reconstructed photocentres of the spectral channels of the Brγ line. We infer the radius of the BLR to be ∼65 μas (0.075 pc), which is consistent with the radius–luminosity relation of nearby active galactic nuclei derived based on the time lag of the Hβ line from reverberation mapping campaigns. Our dynamical modelling indicates the black hole mass is ∼1 × 108 M⊙, which is a little below, but consistent with, the standard MBH–σ* relation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Galaxies that hosted many core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions can be used to study the conditions necessary for the formation of massive stars. NGC 2770 was dubbed an SN factory because it hosted four core-collapse SNe in 20 years (three type Ib and one type IIn). Its star formation rate (SFR) was reported to not be enhanced and, therefore, not compatible with such a high SN rate. Aims. We aim to explain the high SN rate of NGC 2770. Methods. We used archival H I line data for NGC 2770 and reinterpreted the Hα and optical continuum data. Results. Even though the continuum-based SFR indicators do not yield high values, the dust-corrected Hα luminosity implies a high SFR, consistent with the high SN rate. Such a disparity between the SFR estimators is an indication of recently enhanced star formation activity because the continuum indicators trace long timescales of the order of 100 Myr, unlike the line indicators, which trace timescales of the order of 10 Myr. Hence, the unique feature of NGC 2770 compared to other galaxies is the fact that it was observed very shortly after the enhancement of the SFR. It also has high dust extinction, E(B − V) above 1 mag. We provide support for the hypothesis that the increased SFR in NGC 2770 is due to the interaction with its companion galaxies. We report an H I bridge between NGC 2770 and its closest companion and the existence of a total of four companions within 100 kpc (one identified for the first time). There are no clear H I concentrations close to the positions of SNe in NGC 2770 such as those detected for hosts of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and broad-lined SNe type Ic (IcBL). This suggests that the progenitors of type Ib SNe are not born out of recently accreted atomic gas, as was suggested for GRB and IcBL SN progenitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverberation results of the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1510-089 from 8.5 years of spectroscopic monitoring carried out at Steward Observatory over nine observing seasons between December 2008 and June 2017 are presented. Optical spectra show strong Hβ, Hγ, and Fe II emission lines overlying on a blue continuum. All the continuum and emission line light curves show significant variability with fractional root-mean-square variations of 37.30 ± 0.06% (f5100), 11.88 ± 0.29% (Hβ), and 9.61 ± 0.71% (Hγ); however, along with thermal radiation from the accretion disk, non-thermal emission from the jet also contributes to f5100. Several methods of time series analysis (ICCF, DCF, von Neumann, Bartels, JAVELIN, χ2) are used to measure the lag between the continuum and line light curves. The observed frame broad line region size is found to be 61.1−3.2+4.0 61. 1 − 3.2 + 4.0 $ 61.1^{+4.0}_{-3.2} $ (64.7−10.6+27.1 64. 7 − 10.6 + 27.1 $ 64.7^{+27.1}_{-10.6} $) light-days for Hβ (Hγ). Using the σline of 1262 ± 247 km s−1 measured from the root-mean-square spectrum, the black hole mass of PKS 1510-089 is estimated to be 5.71−0.58+0.62 × 107 M⊙ 5. 71 − 0.58 + 0.62 × 10 7 M ⊙ $ 5.71^{+0.62}_{-0.58} \times 10^{7} M_{\odot} $. Context. An unresolved region in the relative vicinity of the event horizon of a supermassive black holes (SMBH) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) radiates strongly variable optical continuum and broad-line emission flux. These fluxes can be processed into twodimensional transfer functions (2DTF) of material flows that encrypt various information about these unresolved structures. An intense search for kinematic signatures of reverberation mapping of close binary SMBH (SMBBH) is currently ongoing. Aims. Elliptical SMBBH systems (i.e. both orbits and disc-like broad-line regions (BLR) are elliptic) have not been assessed in 2DTF studies. We aim to numerically infer such a 2DTF because the geometry of the unresolved region is imprinted on their optical emission. Through this, we determine their specific kinematical signatures. Methods. We simulated the geometry and kinematics of SMBBH whose components are on elliptical orbits. Each SMBH had a disclike elliptical BLR. The SMBHs were active and orbited each other tightly at a subparsec distance. Results. Here we calculate for the first time 2DTF, as defined in the velocity-time delay plane, for several elliptical configurations of SMBBH orbits and their BLRs. We find that these very complex configurations are clearly resolved in maps. These results are distinct from those obtained from circular and disc-wind geometry. We calculate the expected line variability for all SMBBH configurations. We show that the line shapes are influenced by the orbital phase of the SMBBH. Some line profiles resemble observed profiles, but they can also be much deformed to look like those from the disc-wind model. Conclusions. First, our results imply that using our 2DTF, we can detect and quantify kinematic signatures of elliptical SMBBH. Second, the calculated expected line profiles share some intriguing similarities with observed profiles, but also with some profiles that are synthesised in disc-wind models. Hydrogen-rich supernovae, known as Type II (SNe II), are the most common class of explosions observed following the collapse of the core of massive stars. We used analytical estimates and population synthesis simulations to assess the fraction of SNe II progenitors that are expected to have exchanged mass with a companion prior to explosion. We estimate that 1/3 to 1/2 of SN II progenitors have a history of mass exchange with a binary companion before exploding. The dominant binary channels leading to SN II progenitors involve the merger of binary stars. Mergers are expected to produce a diversity of SN II progenitor characteristics, depending on the evolutionary timing and properties of the merger. Alternatively, SN II progenitors from interacting binaries may have accreted mass from their companion, and subsequently been ejected from the binary system after their companion exploded. We show that the overall fraction of SN II progenitors that are predicted to have experienced binary interaction is robust against the main physical uncertainties in our models. However, the relative importance of different binary evolutionary channels is affected by changing physical assumptions. We further discuss ways in which binarity might contribute to the observed diversity of SNe II by considering potential observational signatures arising from each binary channel. For supernovae which have a substantial H-rich envelope at explosion (i.e., excluding Type IIb SNe), a surviving non-compact companion would typically indicate that the supernova progenitor star was in a wide, non-interacting binary. Context. When can an active galactic nucleus (AGN) be considered radio loud (RL)? Following the established view of the AGNs inner workings, an AGN is RL if associated with relativistic ejections emitting a radio synchrotron spectrum (i.e., it is a "jetted" AGN). In this paper we exploit the AGN main sequence that offers a powerful tool to contextualize radio properties. Aims. If large samples of optically-selected quasars are considered, AGNs are identified as RL if their Kellermann's radio loudness ratio RK >  10. Our aims are to characterize the optical properties of different classes based on radio loudness within the main sequence and to test whether the condition RK >  10 is sufficient for the identification of RL AGNs, since the origin of relatively strong radio emission may not be necessarily due to relativistic ejection. Methods. A sample of 355 quasars was selected by cross-correlating the Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters survey (FIRST) with the twelfth release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog published in 2017. We classified the optical spectra according to their spectral types along the main sequence of quasars. For each spectral type, we distinguished compact and extended morphology (providing a FIRST-based atlas of radio maps in the latter case), and three classes of radio loudness: detected (specific flux ratio in the g band and at 1.4 GHz, R′K < 10 R K ′ < 10 $ R_{\rm K}^{\prime} ), intermediate (10 ≤ R′K < 70 10 ≤ R K ′ < 70 $ 10 \le R_{\rm K}^{\prime} ), and RL (R′K ≥ 70 R K ′ ≥ 70 $ R_{\rm K}^{\prime} \geq 70 $). Results. The analysis revealed systematic differences between radio-detected (i.e., radio-quiet), radio-intermediate, and RL classes in each spectral type along the main sequence. We show that spectral bins that contain the extreme Population A sources have radio power compatible with emission by mechanisms ultimately due to star formation processes. RL sources of Population B are characteristically jetted. Their broad Hβ profiles can be interpreted as due to a binary broad-line region. We suggest that RL Population B sources should be preferential targets for the search of black hole binaries, and present a sample of binary black hole AGN candidates. Conclusions. The validity of the Kellermann's criterion may be dependent on the source location along the quasar main sequence. The consideration of the main sequence trends allowed us to distinguish between sources whose radio emission mechanisms is jetted from the ones where the mechanism is likely to be fundamentally different. Context. The analysis of the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at different wavelengths and the study of possible correlations of different spectral windows are a current main field of inquiry. Optical variability has been largely used to identify AGN in multivisit surveys. The strength of a selection based on optical variability lies in the opportunity of analyzing data from surveys of large sky areas by ground-based telescopes. However, the effectiveness of optical variability selection with respect to other multiwavelength techniques has been poorly studied down to the depth that is expected from next-generation surveys. Aims. Here we present the results of our r-band analysis of a sample of 299 optically variable AGN candidates in the VST survey of the COSMOS field, counting 54 visits spread over three observing seasons spanning more than three years. This dataset is more than three times larger than the dataset presented in our previous analysis, and the observing baseline is about eight times longer. Methods. We push toward deeper magnitudes (r(AB) ∼ 23.5 mag) than were reached in past studies. We made wide use of ancillary multiwavelength catalogs in order to confirm the nature of our AGN candidates, and constrained the accuracy of the method based on spectroscopic and photometric diagnostics. We also performed tests aimed at assessing the relevance of dense sampling in view of future wide-field surveys. Results. We demonstrate that the method allows the selection of high-purity (> 86%) samples. We take advantage of the longer observing baseline to achieve great improvement in the completeness of our sample with respect to X-ray and spectroscopically confirmed samples of AGN (59% vs. ∼15% in our previous work), as well as in the completeness of unobscured and obscured AGN. Context. The inter-line comparison between high- and low-ionization emission lines has yielded a wealth of information on the structure and dynamics of the quasar broad line region (BLR), including perhaps the earliest unambiguous evidence in favor of a disk + wind structure in radio-quiet quasars. Aims. We carried out an analysis of the C IVλ1549 and Hβ line profiles of 28 Hamburg-ESO high-luminosity quasars and of 48 low-z, low-luminosity sources in order to test whether the width of the high-ionization line C IVλ1549 could be correlated with Hβ and be used as a virial broadening estimator. Methods. We analyze intermediate- to high-S/N, moderate-resolution optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra covering the redshifted C IVλ1549 and Hβ over a broad range of luminosity log L ∼ 44 − 48.5 [erg s−1] and redshift (0 − 3), following an approach based on the quasar main sequence. Results. The present analysis indicates that the line width of C IVλ1549 is not immediately offering a virial broadening estimator equivalent to Hβ. At the same time a virialized part of the BLR appears to be preserved even at the highest luminosities. We suggest a correction to FWHM(C IVλ1549) for Eddington ratio (using the C IVλ1549 blueshift as a proxy) and luminosity effects that can be applied over more than four dex in luminosity. Conclusions. Great care should be used in estimating high-L black hole masses MBH from C IVλ1549 line width. However, once a corrected FWHM C IVλ1549 is used, a C IVλ1549-based scaling law can yield unbiased MBH values with respect to the ones based on Hβ with sample standard deviation ≈0.3 dex. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) regulates the baryonic cycle within galaxies, and is a key ingredient for translating observations into physical quantities. Although it was assumed to be universal for decades, there is now growing observational evidence showing that the center of massive early-type galaxies hosts a larger population of low-mass stars than is expected based on observations from the Milky Way. Moreover, these variations in the IMF have been found to be related to radial metallicity variations in massive galaxies. We present here a two-dimensional stellar population analysis of the massive lenticular galaxy FCC 167 (NGC 1380) as part of the Fornax3D project. Using a newly developed stellar population fitting scheme, we derive a full two-dimensional IMF map of an early-type galaxy. This two-dimensional analysis allows us go further than a radial analysis, showing how the metallicity changes along a disk-like structure while the IMF follows a distinct, less disky distribution. Thus, our findings indicate that metallicity cannot be the sole driver of the observed radial IMF variations. In addition, a comparison with the orbital decomposition shows suggestive evidence of a coupling between stellar population properties and the internal dynamical structure of FCC 167, where metallicity and IMF maps seem to track the distribution of cold and warm orbits, respectively. This work presents the catalogue of optical spectral properties for all X-ray selected SPIDERS active galactic nuclei (AGN) up to SDSS DR14. SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV programme that is currently conducting optical spectroscopy of the counterparts to the X-ray selected sources detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey and the XMM-Newton slew survey in the footprint of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The SPIDERS DR14 sample is the largest sample of X-ray selected AGN with optical spectroscopic follow-up to date. The catalogue presented here is based on a clean sample of 7344 2RXS (z¯ = 0.5 z ¯ = 0.5 $ \bar{z}=0.5 $) and 1157 XMM-Newton slew survey (z¯ = 0.4 z ¯ = 0.4 $ \bar{z}=0.4 $) type 1 AGN with spectroscopic coverage of the Hβ and/or MgII emission lines. Visual inspection results for each object in this sample are available from a combination of literature sources and the SPIDERS group, which provide both reliable redshifts and source classifications. The spectral regions around the Hβ and MgII emission lines have been fit in order to measure both line and continuum properties, estimate bolometric luminosities, and provide black hole mass estimates using the single-epoch (or photoionisation) method. The use of both Hβ and MgII allows black hole masses to be estimated up to z ≃ 2.5. A comparison is made between the spectral properties and black hole mass estimates derived from Hβ and MgII using the subsample of objects which have coverage of both lines in their spectrum. Based on optical and near-IR Magellan FIRE spectra of 25 starburst galaxies at 0.5 <  z <  0.9, a recent publication showed that their attenuation properties can be explained by a single-parameter sequence of total obscurations ranging from AV = 2 to AV = 30 toward the starburst core centers in a mixed stars and dust configuration. We investigate here the origin of this sequence for the same sample. We show that total attenuations anticorrelate with the starburst sizes in radio (3 GHz) with a significance larger than 5σ and a scatter of 0.26 dex. More obscured and compact starbursts also show enhanced N2 (=[NII]/Hα) ratios and larger line velocity widths that we attribute to an increasing shock contribution toward later merger phases, driven by deeper gravitational potential wells at the coalescence. Additionally, the attenuation is also linked to the equivalent width (EW) of hydrogen recombination lines, which is sensitive to the luminosity weighted age of the relatively unobscured stellar populations. Overall, the correlations among AV, tot, radio size, line width, N2 and EW of Balmer and Paschen lines converge toward suggesting an evolutionary sequence of merger stages: all of these quantities are likely to be good time-tracers of the merger phenomenon, and their large spanned range appears to be characteristic of the different merger phases. Half of our sample at higher obscurations have radio sizes approximately 3 times smaller than early type galaxies at the same redshift, suggesting that, in analogy with local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), these cores cannot be directly forming elliptical galaxies. Finally, we detect mid-IR AGN torus for half of our sample and additional X-ray emission for 6 starbursts; intriguingly, the latter have systematically more compact sizes, suggestive of emerging AGNs toward later merger stages, possibly precursors of a later QSO phase. Context. Some Type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) show extremely asymmetric Balmer lines with the broad peak redshifted or blueshifted by thousands of km s−1. These AGN may be good candidates for supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs). The complex line shapes can be due to the complex kinematics of the two broad line regions (BLRs). Therefore other methods should be applied to confirm the SMBBHs. One of them is spectropolarimetry. Aims. We rely on numerical modeling of the polarimetry of binary black holes systems, since polarimetry is highly sensitive to geometry, in order to find the specific influence of supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) geometry and dynamics on polarized parameters across the broad line profiles. We apply our method to SMBBHs in which both components are assumed to be AGN with distances at the subparsec scale. Methods. We used a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code that simulates the geometry, dynamics, and emission pattern of a binary system where two black holes are getting increasingly close. Each gravitational well is accompanied by its own BLR and the whole system is surrounded by an accretion flow from the distant torus. We examined the emission line deformation and predicted the associated polarization that could be observed. Results. We modeled scattering-induced broad line polarization for various BLR geometries with complex kinematics. We find that the presence of SMBBHs can produce complex polarization angle profiles φ and strongly affect the polarized and unpolarized line profiles. Depending on the phase of the SMBBH, the resulting double-peaked emission lines either show red or blue peak dominance, or both the peaks can have the same intensity. In some cases, the whole line profile appears as a single Gaussian line, hiding the true nature of the source. Conclusions. Our results suggest that future observation with the high resolution spectropolarimetry of optical broad emission lines could play an important role in detecting subparsec SMBBHs. Context. The innermost parts of powerful jets in active galactic nuclei are surrounded by dense, high-velocity clouds from the broad-line region, which may penetrate into the jet and lead to the formation of a strong shock. Such jet-cloud interactions are expected to have measurable effects on the γ-ray emission from blazars. Aims. We characterise the dynamics of a typical cloud-jet interaction scenario, and the evolution of its radiative output in the 0.1–30 GeV energy range, to assess to what extent these interactions can contribute to the γ-ray emission in blazars. Methods. We use semi-analytical descriptions of the jet-cloud dynamics, taking into account the expansion of the cloud inside the jet and its acceleration. Assuming that electrons are accelerated in the interaction and making use of the hydrodynamical information, we then compute the high-energy radiation from the cloud, including the absorption of γ-rays in the ambient photon field through pair creation. Results. Jet-cloud interactions can lead to significant γ-ray fluxes in blazars with a broad-line region (BLR), in particular when the cloud expansion and acceleration inside the jet are taken into account. This is caused by 1) the increased shocked area in the jet, which leads to an increase in the energy budget for the non-thermal emission; 2) a more efficient inverse Compton cooling with the boosted photon field of the BLR; and 3) an increased observer luminosity due to Doppler boosting effects. Conclusions. For typical broad-line region parameters, either (i) jet-cloud interactions contribute significantly to the persistent γ-ray emission from blazars or (ii) the BLR is far from spherical or the fraction of energy deposited in non-thermal electrons is small. Context. A new generation of spectral synthesis models has been developed in recent years, but there is no matching set of template galaxy spectra, in terms of quality and resolution, for testing and refining the new models. Aims. Our main goal is to find and calibrate new near-infrared spectral indices along the Hubble sequence of galaxies which will be used to obtain additional constraints to the population analysis based on medium-resolution integrated spectra of galaxies. Methods. Spectra of previously studied and well-understood galaxies with relatively simple stellar populations (e.g., ellipticals or bulge dominated galaxies) are needed to provide a baseline data set for spectral synthesis models. Results. X-shooter spectra spanning the optical and infrared wavelengths (350–2400 nm) of bright nearby elliptical galaxies with a resolving power of R ∼ 4000–5400 were obtained. Heliocentric systemic velocity, velocity dispersion, and Mg, Fe, and Hβ line-strength indices are presented. Conclusions. We present a library of very-high-quality spectra of galaxies covering a large range of age, metallicity, and morphological type. Cosmic dust is a key tracer of structure formation and evolution in the universe. In active galactic nuclei (AGN) the origin and role of dust are uncertain. Here, we have studied dust in the X-ray bright and reddened type-1 quasar IC 4329A, which exhibits an ionised AGN wind. We incorporated high-resolution X-ray and mid-IR spectroscopy, combined with broad-band continuum modelling, to investigate the properties of dust in this AGN. We used new chandra HETGS observations taken in June 2017, as well as archival data from XMM-Newton, Swift, HST, Spitzer, IRAS, and Herschel for our IR-optical-UV-X-ray modelling. Two distinct components of dust in IC 4329A are found. One component is in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy, and the other is a nuclear component in the AGN torus and its associated wind. The emitting dust in the torus is evident in mid-IR emission (9.7 and 18 μm features), while dust in the wind is present through both reddening and X-ray absorption (O, Si, and Fe edge features). The gas depletion factors into dust for O, Si, and Fe are measured. We derive an intrinsic reddening E(B – V) ≈ 1.0, which is most consistent with a grey (flat) extinction law. The AGN wind consists of three ionisation components. From analysis of long-term changes in the wind, we determine limits on the location of the wind components. The two lowest ionisation components are likely carriers of dust from the AGN torus. We find that the dust in the nuclear component of IC 4329A is different from dust in the Milky Way. The dust grains in the AGN torus and wind are likely larger than the standard Galactic dust, and are in a porous composite form (containing amorphous silicate with iron and oxygen). We present our analysis of X-ray spectral properties observed from the Seyfert 1 galactic nucleus NGC 7469 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics mission (ASCA) observations. We demonstrate strong observational evidence that NGC 7469 undergoes spectral transitions from the low hard state (LHS) to the intermediate state (IS) during these observations. The RXTE observations (1996–2009) show that the source was in the IS ∼75% of the time only ∼25% of the time in the LHS. The spectra of NGC 7469 are well fitted by the so-called bulk motion Comptonization (BMC) model for all spectral states. We have established the photon index (Γ) saturation level, Γsat = 2.1 ± 0.1, in the Γ versus mass accretion rate, Ṁ correlation. This Γ – Ṁ correlation allows us to estimate the black hole (BH) mass in NGC 7469 to be MBH ≥ 3 × 106M⊙ assuming the distance to NGC 7469 of 70 Mpc. For this BH mass estimate, we use the scaling method taking Galactic BHs, GRO J1655–40, Cyg X–1, and an extragalactic BH source, NGC 4051 as reference sources. The Γ versus Ṁ correlation revealed in NGC 7469 is similar to those in a number of Galactic and extragalactic BHs and it clearly shows the correlation along with the strong Γ saturation at ≈2.1. This is robust observational evidence for the presence of a BH in NGC 7469. We also find that the seed (disk) photon temperatures are quite low, of the order of 140–200 eV, which are consistent with a high BH mass in NGC 7469 that is more than 3 × 106 solar masses. Context. In previous papers, we introduced our method for measuring chemical abundances from integrated-light spectra of globular clusters and applied it to a variety of extragalactic star clusters. Our work so far, however, has concentrated primarily on the optical range 4200 Å –6200 Å. Aims. Here we extend our analysis technique to the infrared and test it on an H-band spectrum of the massive globular cluster G280 in M 31. Methods. We simultaneously analyse an optical spectrum of G280, obtained with the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope, and an H-band spectrum obtained with NIRSPEC on Keck II. We discuss the sensitivity of our results to various modifications of the input assumptions, such as different line lists and isochrones and the possible presence of a metallicity spread in G280. Results. When using the most recent version of the Kurucz line list, we measure iron abundances of [Fe/H] = −0.68±0.02 from the optical spectrum and [Fe/H] = −0.60±0.07 from the infrared spectrum. These values agree well with previous spectroscopic determinations of the metallicity of G280. While the small difference between the optical and infrared measurements is insignificant given the uncertainties, it is also consistent with a metallicity spread similar to that observed in massive GCs such as ω Cen and G1, and also hinted at by the colour-magnitude diagram of G280. The optical and infrared spectra both indicate an α-enhancement of about 0.3–0.4 dex relative to solar-scaled abundances, as typically also observed in Milky Way GCs. Conclusions. From this analysis, it appears that our integrated-light analysis technique also performs well in the H-band. However, complications due to the presence of molecular bands and telluric contamination are more severe in the infrared, and accurate modelling of the coolest giants is more critical. Winds accelerated by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are invoked in the most successful models of galaxy evolution to explain the observed physical and evolutionary properties of massive galaxies. Winds are expected to deposit energy and momentum into the interstellar medium (ISM), thus regulating both star formation and supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth. We undertook a multiband observing program aimed at obtaining a complete census of winds in a sample of WISE/SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars (QSOs) at z ≈ 2–4. We analyzed the rest-frame optical (i.e. LBT/LUCI and VLT/SINFONI) and UV (i.e. SDSS) spectra of 18 randomly selected WISSH QSOs to measure the SMBH mass and study the properties of winds both in the narrow line region (NLR) and broad line region (BLR) traced by blueshifted or skewed [OIII] and CIV emission lines, respectively. These WISSH QSOs are powered by SMBH with masses ≳109M⊙ accreting at 0.4 < λEdd < 3.1. We found the existence of two subpopulations of hyper-luminous QSOs characterized by the presence of outflows at different distances from the SMBH. One population (i.e. [OIII] sources) exhibits powerful [OIII] outflows, a rest-frame equivalent width (REW) of the CIV emission REWCIV ≈ 20–40 Å, and modest CIV velocity shift (vCIVpeak $v_{\textrm{CIV}}^{\textrm{peak}}$ v CIV peak ) with respect to the systemic redshift (vCIVpeak $v_{\textrm{CIV}}^{\textrm{peak}}$ v CIV peak <~ 2000 km s−1). The second population (i.e. Weak [OIII] sources), representing ~70% of the analyzed WISSH QSOs, shows weak or absent [OIII] emission and an extremely large blueshifted CIV emission (vCIVpeak $v_{\textrm{CIV}}^{\textrm{peak}}$ v CIV peak up to ~8000 km s−1 and REWCIV <~ 20 Å). We propose two explanations for the observed behavior of the strength of the [OIII] emission in terms of the orientation effects of the line of sight and ionization cone. The dichotomy in the presence of BLR and NLR winds could be likely due to inclination effects considering a polar geometry scenario for the BLR winds. In a few cases these winds are remarkably as powerful as those revealed in the NLR in the [OIII] QSOs (Ėkin ~ 1044−45 erg s−1). We also investigated the dependence of these CIV winds on fundamental AGN parameters such as bolometric luminosity (LBol), Eddington ratio (λEdd), and UV-to-X-ray continuum slope (αOX). We found a strong correlation with LBol and an anti-correlation with αOX whereby the higher the luminosity, the steeper the ionizing continuum described by means of αOX and the larger the blueshift of the CIV emission line. Finally, the observed dependence vCIVpeak $v_{\textrm{CIV}}^{\textrm{peak}}$ v CIV peak ∝ LBol0.28 ± 0.04 $L_{\textrm{Bol}}^{0.28~\pm~0.04}$ L Bol 0.28   ±   0.04 is consistent with a radiatively-driven-winds scenario, where a strong UV continuum is necessary to launch the wind and a weakness of the X-rayemission is fundamental to prevent overionization of the wind itself. Context. The study of periodic (or quasi-periodic) variabilities in optical and radio bands and quasi-periodic radio-jet swings are important to further our understanding of the physical processes in blazars. Among these the correlation between the periodic or quasi-periodic phenomena in radio and optical bands is particularly significant, because it can provide unique information about the relativistic jets and central engines in the nuclei of blazars. Aims. We aim to investigate the possibility that the radio jet swing on parsec scales observed in PG 1302-102 (z = 0.278) is a quasi-periodic phenomenon and study its correlation with the periodic optical variability claimed in a recently published work, seeking evidence for a binary black hole system. Methods. The precessing jet-nozzle model proposed in our previous works was applied to simulate the kinematics of the superluminal components. It is shown that the inner-jet kinematic features can well be explained in terms of the precessing nozzle model. Results. Based on the model simulation (model fitting) of the inner kinematics for its six superluminal components, a precession period of ~5.1583 ± 0.5 yr is derived for the radio jet swing and the kinematics of all the six components are consistently interpreted. The similarity between the radio jet precession period and the optical period found in its optical light curve may be physically significant. Both periodic behaviors in radio and optical bands could be explained in terms of the orbital motion of a black hole binary, if the orbital plane makes large inclinations to the sky plane: the orbital motion of the primary hole produces the periodic jet swing and the orbital motion of the secondary hole produces the periodic optical variability as suggested in the literature. Thus the total mass and the mass ratio of the binary are estimated. Conclusions. Based on this analysis, we show that PG 1302-102 might have a supermassive black hole binary existing in its nucleus and it is starting to enter its inspiral phase of merging. Infrared high-resolution imaging and interferometry show that the dust distribution is frequently elongated along the polar direction of an AGN. In addition, interferometric mm line observations have revealed a bipolar outflow in a direction nearly perpendicular to the nuclear disk. To explain these findings, we developed a model scenario for the inner ~30 pc of an AGN. The structure of the gas within this region is entirely determined by the gas inflow from larger scales. We assumed a rotating thick gas disk between about one and ten parsec. External gas accretion adds mass and injects energy via gas compression into this gas disk and drives turbulence. We extended the description of a massive turbulent thick gas disk developed in a recent paper by adding a magnetocentrifugal wind. Our disks are assumed to be strongly magnetized via equipartition between the turbulent gas pressure and the energy density of the magnetic field. In a second step, we built 3D density cubes based on the analytical model, illuminated them with a central source, and made radiative transfer calculations. In a third step, we calculated mid-infrared (MIR) visibility amplitudes and compared them to available interferometric observations. We show that magnetocentrifugal winds starting from a thin and thick gas disk are viable in active galaxy centers. The magnetic field associated with this thick gas disk plays a major role in driving a magnetocentrifugal wind at a distance of ~1 pc from the central black hole. Once the wind is launched, it is responsible for the transport of angular momentum and the gas disk can become thin. A magnetocentrifugal wind is also expected above the thin magnetized gas disk. The structure and outflow rate of this wind is determined by the properties of the thick gas disk. The outflow scenario can account for the elongated dust structures, outer edges of the thin maser disks, and molecular outflows observed in local AGN. The models reproduce the observed terminal wind velocities, the scatter of the MIR – intrinsic X-ray correlation, and point source fractions. An application of the model to the Circinus galaxy and NGC 1068 shows that the infrared spectral energy distribution, available MIR interferometric observations, and optical polarization can be reproduced in a satisfactory way, provided that (i) a puff-up at the inner edge of the thin disk is present and (ii) a local screen with an optical depth of τV ~ 20 in form of a local gas filament and/or a warp of the thick disk hide a significant fraction of both nuclei. Context. From stars to active galactic nuclei, many astrophysical systems are surrounded by an equatorial distribution of dusty material that is, in a number of cases, spatially unresolved even with cutting edge facilities. Aims. In this paper, we investigate if and how one can determine the unresolved and heterogeneous morphology of dust distribution around a central bright source using time-resolved polarimetric observations. Methods. We used polarized radiative transfer simulations to study a sample of circumnuclear dusty morphologies. We explored a grid of geometrically variable models that are uniform, fragmented, and density stratified in the near-infrared, optical, and ultraviolet bands, and we present their distinctive time-dependent polarimetric signatures. Results. As expected, varying the structure of the obscuring equatorial disk has a deep impact on the inclination-dependent flux, polarization degree and angle, and time lags we observe.We find that stratified media are distinguishable by time-resolved polarimetric observations, and that the expected polarization is much higher in the infrared band than in the ultraviolet. However, because of the physical scales imposed by dust sublimation, the average time lags of months to years between the total and polarized fluxes are important; these time lags lengthens the observational campaigns necessary to break more sophisticated, and therefore also more degenerated, models. In the ultraviolet band, time lags are slightly shorter than in the infrared or optical bands, and, coupled to lower diluting starlight fluxes, time-resolved polarimetry in the UV appears more promising for future campaigns. Conclusions. Equatorial dusty disks differ in terms of inclination-dependent photometric, polarimetric, and timing observables, but only the coupling of these different markers can lead to inclination-independent constraints on the unresolved structures. Context. According to numerical simulations, stars are not always kept at their birth galactocentric distances but they have a tendency to migrate. The importance of this radial migration in shaping galactic light distributions is still unclear. However, if radial migration is indeed important, galaxies with different surface brightness (SB) profiles must display differences in their stellar population properties. Aims. We investigate the role of radial migration in the light distribution and radial stellar content by comparing the inner colour, age, and metallicity gradients for galaxies with different SB profiles. We define these inner parts, avoiding the bulge and bar regions and up to around three disc scale lengths (type I, pure exponential) or the break radius (type II, downbending; type III, upbending). Methods. We analysed 214 spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey covering different SB profiles. We made use of GASP2D and SDSS data to characterise the light distribution and obtain colour profiles of these spiral galaxies. The stellar age and metallicity profiles were computed using a methodology based on full-spectrum fitting techniques (pPXF, GANDALF, and STECKMAP) to the Integral Field Spectroscopic CALIFA data. Results. The distributions of the colour, stellar age, and stellar metallicity gradients in the inner parts for galaxies displaying different SB profiles are unalike as suggested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests. We find a trend in which type II galaxies show the steepest profiles of all, type III show the shallowest, and type I display an intermediate behaviour. Conclusions. These results are consistent with a scenario in which radial migration is more efficient for type III galaxies than for type I systems, where type II galaxies present the lowest radial migration efficiency. In such a scenario, radial migration mixes the stellar content, thereby flattening the radial stellar properties and shaping different SB profiles. However, in light of these results we cannot further quantify the importance of radial migration in shaping spiral galaxies, and other processes, such as recent star formation or satellite accretion, might play a role. Polarization is an important tool to further the understanding of interstellar dust and the sources behind it. In this paper we describe our implementation of polarization that is due to scattering of light by spherical grains and electrons in the dust Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SKIRT. In contrast to the implementations of other Monte Carlo radiative transfer codes, ours uses co-moving reference frames that rely solely on the scattering processes. It fully supports the peel-off mechanism that is crucial for the efficient calculation of images in 3D Monte Carlo codes. We develop reproducible test cases that push the limits of our code. The results of our program are validated by comparison with analytically calculated solutions. Additionally, we compare results of our code to previously published results. We apply our method to models of dusty spiral galaxies at near-infrared and optical wavelengths. We calculate polarization degree maps and show them to contain signatures that trace characteristics of the dust arms independent of the inclination or rotation of the galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The light curves of a diverse range of accreting objects show characteristic linear relationships between the short-term rms amplitude of variability and the flux as measured on longer time-scales. This behaviour is thought to be imprinted on the light curves by accretion rate fluctuations on different time-scales, propagating and coupling together through the accretion flow. Recently, a simple mathematical interpretation has been proposed for the rms-flux relation, where short-term variations are modulated by a single slower process. Here we show that this model was already considered and ruled out by another publication on the grounds that it did not produce the observed broad time-scale dependence of the rms-flux relation and associated lognormal flux distribution. We demonstrate the problems with the model via mathematical arguments and a case-study of Cyg X-1 data compared with numerical simulations. We also highlight another conclusion of our original work, which is that a linear rms-flux relation is easy to produce using a variety of models with positively skewed flux distributions. Observing such a relation in a non-accreting object (e.g. in solar flares) does not necessarily imply a phenomenological connection with the behaviour of accretion flows, unless the relation is seen over a similarly broad range of time-scales. Context. Quasar microlensing effects make it possible to measure the accretion disc sizes around distant supermassive black holes that are still well beyond the spatial resolution of contemporary instrumentation. The sizes measured with this technique appear inconsistent with the standard accretion disc model. Not only are the measured accretion disc sizes larger, but their dependence on wavelength is in most cases completely different from the predictions of the standard model. Aims. We suggest that these discrepancies may arise not from non-standard accretion disc structure or systematic errors, as it was proposed before, but rather from scattering and reprocession of the radiation of the disc. In particular, the matter falling from the gaseous torus and presumably feeding the accretion disc may at certain distances become ionized and produce an extended halo that is free from colour gradients. Methods. A simple analytical model is proposed assuming that a geometrically thick translucent inflow acts as a scattering mirror changing the apparent spatial properties of the disc. This inflow may be also identified with the broad line region or its inner parts. Results. Such a model is able to explain the basic properties of the apparent disc sizes, primarily their large values and their shallow dependence on wavelength. The only condition required is to scatter a significant portion of the luminosity of the disc. This can easily be fulfilled if the scattering inflow has a large geometrical thickness and clumpy structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hot, dusty torus located around the outer edge of the broad-line region of AGNs is a fundamental ingredient in unified AGN models. While the existence of circumnuclear dust around AGNs at pc-scale radii is now widely accepted, questions about the origin, evolution and long-term stability of these dust tori remain unsettled. We used reverberation mapping of the hot circumnuclear dust in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, to monitor its temperature and reverberation lag as a function of the varying accretion disk brightness. We carried out multiband, multiepoch photometric observations of the nucleus of NGC 4151 in the z, Y, J, H, and K bands for 29 epochs from 2010 January to 2014 June, supported by new near-infrared and optical spectroscopic observations, and archived WISE data. We see no signatures of dust destruction due to sublimation in our data, since they show no increase in the hot dust reverberation delay directly correlated with substantial accretion disk flux increases in the observed period. Instead, we find that the hot dust in NGC 4151 appears to merely heat up, and the hot dust temperature closely tracks the accretion disk luminosity variations. We find indications of a decreased reverberation delay within the observed period from τ = 42.5 ± 4.0 days in 2010 to τ = 29.6 ± 1.7 days in 2013-2014. Such a varying reverberation radius on longer timescales would explain the intrinsic scatter observed in the radius-luminosity relation of dust around AGNs. Our observations rule out that a second, larger dust component within a 100-light-day radius from the source contributes significantly to the observed near-infrared flux in this galaxy. Context. Fairall 51 is a polar-scattered Seyfert 1 galaxy, a type of active galaxy believed to represent a bridge between unobscured type-1 and obscured type-2 objects. Fairall 51 has shown complex and variable X-ray absorption, but little is known about its origin. Aims. In our research, we observed Fairall 51 with the X-ray satellite Suzaku in order to constrain a characteristic time scale of its variability. Methods. We performed timing and spectral analysis of four observations separated by 1.5, 2, and 5.5 day intervals. Results. We found that the 0.5-50 keV broadband X-ray spectra are dominated by a primary power-law emission (with the photon index ~2). This emission is affected by at least three absorbers with different ionisations (log ξ ≈ 1-4). The spectrum is shaped further by a reprocessed emission, possibly coming from two regions, the accretion disc and a more distant scattering region. The accretion disc emission is smeared by the relativistic effects, from which we measured the spin of the black hole as a ≈ 0.8 ± 0.2. We found that most of the spectral variability can be attributed to the least ionised absorber whose column density changed by a factor of two between the first (highest-flux) and the last (lowest-flux) observation. Conclusions. A week-long scale of the variability indicates that the absorber is located at the distance ≈0.05 pc from the centre, i.e., in the broad line region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. With the current study we aim at understanding the properties of radio emission and the assumed jet from four radio-loud and γ-ray-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies that have been detected by Fermi. These are Seyfert 1 galaxies with emission lines at the low end of the FWHM distribution. Aims. The ultimate goal is twofold: first we investigate whether a relativistic jet is operating at the source producing the radio output, and second, we quantify the jet characteristics to understand possible similarities with and differences from the jets found in typical blazars. Methods. We relied on the most systematic monitoring of radio-loud and γ-ray-detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the cm and mm radio bands conducted with the Effelsberg 100 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. It covers the longest time-baselines and the most radio frequencies to date. This dataset of multi-wavelength, long-term radio light-curves was analysed from several perspectives. We developed a novel algorithm to extract sensible variability parameters (mainly amplitudes and time scales) that were then used to compute variability brightness temperatures and the corresponding Doppler factors. The jet powers were computed from the light curves to estimate the energy output and compare it with that of typical blazars. The dynamics of radio spectral energy distributions were examined to understand the mechanism causing the variability. Results. The length of the available light curves for three of the four sources in the sample allowed a firm understanding of the general behaviour of the sources. They all display intensive variability that appears to be occurring at a pace rather faster than what is commonly seen in blazars. The flaring events become progressively more prominent as the frequency increases and show intensive spectral evolution that is indicative of shock evolution. The variability brightness temperatures and the associated Doppler factors are moderate, implying a mildly relativistic jet. The computed jet powers show very energetic flows. The radio polarisation in one case clearly implies a quiescent jet underlying recursive flaring activity. Finally, in one case, the sudden disappearance of a γ-ray flare below some critical frequency in our band needs a more detailed investigation of the possible mechanism causing the evolution of broadband events. Conclusions. Despite the generally lower flux densities, the sources appear to show all typical characteristics seen in blazars that are powered by relativistic jets, such as intensive variability, spectral evolution across the different bands following evolutionary paths explained by travelling shocks, and Doppler factors indicating mildly relativistic speeds. Context. Active galaxies are characterized by variability at every wavelength, with timescales from hours to years depending on the observing window. Optical variability has proven to be an effective way of detecting AGNs in imaging surveys, lasting from weeks to years. Aims. In the present work we test the use of optical variability as a tool to identify active galactic nuclei in the VST multiepoch survey of the COSMOS field, originally tailored to detect supernova events. Methods. We make use of the multiwavelength data provided by other COSMOS surveys to discuss the reliability of the method and the nature of our AGN candidates. Results. The selection on the basis of optical variability returns a sample of 83 AGN candidates; based on a number of diagnostics, we conclude that 67 of them are confirmed AGNs (81% purity), 12 are classified as supernovae, while the nature of the remaining 4 is unknown. For the subsample of AGNs with some spectroscopic classification, we find that Type 1 are prevalent (89%) compared to Type 2 AGNs (11%). Overall, our approach is able to retrieve on average 15% of all AGNs in the field identified by means of spectroscopic or X-ray classification, with a strong dependence on the source apparent magnitude (completeness ranging from 26% to 5%). In particular, the completeness for Type 1 AGNs is 25%, while it drops to 6% for Type 2 AGNs. The rest of the X-ray selected AGN population presents on average a larger rms variability than the bulk of non-variable sources, indicating that variability detection for at least some of these objects is prevented only by the photometric accuracy of the data. The low completeness is in part due to the short observing span: we show that increasing the temporal baseline results in larger samples as expected for sources with a red-noise power spectrum. Context. A fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show dramatic X-ray spectral changes on the day-to-week time scales associated with variation in the line of sight of the cold absorber. Aims. We intend to model the polarization fluctuations arising from an obscuration event, thereby offering a method of determining whether flux variations are due to occultation or extreme intrinsic emission variability. Methods. Undertaking 1-100 keV polarimetric simulations with the Monte Carlo code Stokes, we simulated the journey of a variety of cold gas clouds in front of an extended primary source. We varied the hydrogen column density nH and size of the absorber, as well as the initial polarization state of the emitting source, to cover a wide range of scenarios. Results. Simulations indicate that different results are expected according to the initial polarization of the extended continuum source. For unpolarized primary fluxes, large (~50°) variations of the polarization position angle are expected before and after an occultation event, which is associated with very low residual polarization degrees (P ≪ 1%). In the case of an emitting disk with intrinsic, position-independent polarization, and for a given range of parameters, X-ray eclipses significantly alter the observed polarization spectra, with most of the variations seen in ѱ. Finally, non-uniformly polarized emitting regions produce very distinctive polarization variations due to the successive covering and uncovering of different portions of the disk. Plotted against time, variations in P and ѱ form detectable P Cygni type profiles that are distinctive signatures of non-axisymmetric emission. Conclusions. We find that X-ray polarimetry is particularly adapted to probing X-ray eclipses due to Compton-thin and Comptonthick gas clouds. Polarization measurements would distinguish between intrinsic intensity fluctuations and external eclipsing events, constrain the geometry of the covering medium, and test the hypothesis of non-uniformly emitting disks predicted by general relativity. Context. We have observed almost one third of the globular clusters in the Milky Way, targeting distant and/or highly reddened objects, as well as a few reference clusters. A large sample of red giant stars was observed with FORS2 at VLT/ESO at R ~ 2000. The method for deriving stellar parameters is presented with application to six reference clusters. Aims. We aim at deriving the stellar parameters effective temperature, gravity, metallicity, and alpha-element enhancement as well as the radial velocity to confirm the membership of individual stars in each cluster. We analyse the spectra collected for the reference globular clusters NGC 6528 ([Fe/H] ~ -0.1), NGC 6553 ([Fe/H] ~ -0.2), M 71 ([Fe/H] ~ -0.8), NGC 6558 ([Fe/H] ~ -1.0), NGC 6426 ([Fe/H] ~ -2.1), and Terzan 8 ([Fe/H] ~ -2.2). They cover the full range of globular cluster metallicities, and are located in the bulge, disc, and halo. Methods. Full spectrum-fitting techniques were applied by comparing each target spectrum with a stellar library in the optical region at 4560-5860 Å. We employed the library of observed spectra MILES, and the Coelho synthetic library. We validated the method by recovering the known atmospheric parameters for 49 well-studied stars that cover a wide range in the parameter space. We adopted as final stellar parameters (effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities) the average of results using the observed and synthetic spectral libraries. Results. We identified 4 member stars in NGC 6528, 13 in NGC 6553, 10 inM71, 5 in NGC 6558, 5 in NGC 6426, and 12 in Terzan 8. Radial velocities, Teff, log(g), [Fe/H], and alpha-element enhancements were derived. We derived (vhelio)= -242±11 km s-1, [Fe/H] = -2.39 ± 0.04, [Mg/Fe] = 0.38 ± 0.06 for NGC 6426 from spectroscopy for the first time. Conclusions. The method proved to be reliable for red giant stars observed with resolution R ~ 2000, yielding results compatible with high-resolution spectroscopy. The derived a-element abundances show [a/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] consistent with that of field stars at the same metallicities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate line formation processes in Type IIb supernovae (SNe) from 100 to 500 days post-explosion using spectral synthesis calculations. The modelling identifies the nuclear burning layers and physical mechanisms that produce the major emission lines, and the diagnostic potential of these. We compare the model calculations with data on the three best observed Type IIb SNe to-date - SN 1993J, SN 2008ax, and SN 2011dh. Oxygen nucleosynthesis depends sensitively on the main-sequence mass of the star and modelling of the [O I] λλ6300, 6364 lines constrains the progenitors of these three SNe to the MZAMS = 12-16 M⊙ range (ejected oxygen masses 0.3-0.9 M⊙), with SN 2011dh towards the lower end and SN 1993J towards the upper end of the range. The high ejecta masses from MZAMS ≳ 17 M⊙ progenitors give rise to brighter nebular phase emission lines than observed. Nucleosynthesis analysis thus supports a scenario of low-to-moderate mass progenitors for Type IIb SNe, and by implication an origin in binary systems. We demonstrate how oxygen and magnesium recombination lines may be combined to diagnose the magnesium mass in the SN ejecta. For SN 2011dh, a magnesium mass of 0.02-0.14 M⊙ is derived, which gives a Mg/O production ratio consistent with the solar value. Nitrogen left in the He envelope from CNO burning gives strong [N II] λλ6548, 6583 emission lines that dominate over Ha emission in our models. The hydrogen envelopes of Type IIb SNe are too small and dilute to produce any noticeable Ha emission or absorption after ~150 days, and nebular phase emission seen around 6550 Å is in many cases likely caused by [N II] λλ6548, 6583. Finally, the influence of radiative transport on the emergent line profiles is investigated. Significant line blocking in the metal core remains for several hundred days, which affects the emergent spectrum. These radiative transfer effects lead to early-time blueshifts of the emission line peaks, which gradually disappear as the optical depths decrease with time.
