This work is a review of Boris Choubert’s paper (1935), which was published in French under the rather devalorizing title: “Research on the Genesis of Palaeozoic and Precambrian Belts.” Despite its innovative content, this article had no impact either at the time of its publication or even later. It begins with the construction of a remarkable fit of the circum-Atlantic continents. This was based on the −1.000 meters isobath instead of the shoreline. Thirty years before Bullard et al. (1965), it demonstrated in an indisputable way the reality of the continents motion on the surface of the Earth. Therefore, Choubert designated Wegener’s “continental drift” as the main cause of tectonics. Even going beyond Wegener’s theory, he argued that this mechanism was efficient well before the formation of the Triassic Pangæa, during the whole Palaeozoic to result in the building of the Caledonian and Hercynian mountains. Although he was still encumbered by the vocabulary of the time regarding geosynclines, Boris Choubert described tectonics based on the horizontal mobility of the Precambrian continental blocks. Oddly enough, he did not apply this model to the Precambrian structures, which he attributed to the effects of the Earth’s rotation on the continental crust during its solidification. At the time of its publication, this paper was a very important step towards understanding global tectonics. Unfortunately, Choubert’s contemporaries did not generally recognize its significance. Ce travail est une analyse de l’article de Boris Choubert (1935) paru en français sous le titre un peu réducteur: « Recherches sur la genèse des chaînes paléozoïques et antécambriennes. » Malgré son contenu novateur, cet article n’a eu aucun retentissement à l’époque de sa publication, ni même plus tard. Il débute par la construction d’un remarquable assemblage des continents péri-atlantiques fondé sur l’isobathe −1.000 mètres et non pas sur la ligne de rivage. Trente ans avant Bullard et al. (1965), il démontre de façon indiscutable la réalité du déplacement des masses continentales à la surface de la Terre. Dès lors, Choubert privilégie totalement la « dérive des continents » comme moteur de la tectonique. Allant au-delà même de la vision de Wegener, il fait jouer ce mécanisme bien avant la formation de la Pangée triasique, pendant toute la durée de l’ère primaire, au cours de l’érection des chaînes calédonienne et hercynienne. Bien que restant prisonnier du vocabulaire de l’époque sur les géosynclinaux, Boris Choubert décrit une tectonique fondée sur la mobilité des blocs continentaux précambriens. Curieusement, il n’applique pas ce modèle aux déformations précambriennes qu’il attribue aux effets de la rotation de la Terre sur une croûte continentale en voie de solidification. Lors de sa parution, cet article représentait un pas très important vers la compréhension de la tectonique globale et il est regrettable qu’il n’ait pas été mieux reçu par ses contemporains. International audience; Displacements of collective grains at the free surface of a tilted grain packing constitute precursory events preceding a granular avalanche. Laboratory experiments commonly performed by slowly tilting sphere packings from 0 • to the avalanche angle (θ A) are difficult to reproduce and the number of events is too small to assess robust statistical analyses of the precursor activity. To go beyond this limitation, we have developed a specific experimental setup which allows continuously tilting the packing with successive oscillation cycles between θ C < θ A and −θ C. We use a high resolution optical camera and process the images of the packing free surface to identify precursory events during many consecutive cycles of a single packing. The analysis deals with the mean angle of the first event (θ F) and the mean angle between two consecutive events (θ I). We show a good reproducibility in the event occurrence associated to a large number of events. We analyze the effect of the θ C parameter. The approach is very promising to highlight the effects of external parameters, including humidity, packing container geometry.; Les déplacements collectifs de grains à la surface libre d'un empilement de grains inclinés constituent des précurseurs précédant une avalanche granulaire. International audience; The Mauléon Basin, in the northwestern Pyrenean Belt, is related to Early Cretaceous rifting and mantle denudation. Here we review the evolution of depositional systems in the Mauléon Rift Basin during Albian and Cenomanian time. This review includes the lithostratigraphy, regional distribution, boundaries, age and facies sedimentology of the basin’s syn-rift formations and their members. We construct paleogeographic maps to elucidate (1) the 3D distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional systems during the Albian and Cenomanian from the Iberian proximal margin to the hyperextended domain and (2) the link between major extensional structures and sedimentation during rifting and mantle denudation. The Mauléon Rift was supplied during most of the Albian by sediments from the Iberian proximal margin. The southern margin had a steep and abrupt topographic boundary related to a northward crustal rollover along the south-dipping Saint-Palais detachment. This feature controlled the deposition of coarse-grained turbidites at the base of the margin that abruptly gave way to low-density turbidites, then deep-basin deposits in the hyperextended domain. During uppermost Albian to Early Cenomanian time, mantle denudation occurred in the eastern Mauléon Basin and the vergence of the detachment systems reversed. Minor debris-flow deposits formed at the foot of fault scarps associated with the newly formed north-dipping detachments. Elsewhere, sediment from deltaic systems to the west in the Saint-Jean-de-Luz area deposited low-density turbidites in the hyperextended domain. During the post-rift stage, the flux of coarse sediment from the detachment footwall gradually declined as deformation waned, and low-density turbidites expanded onto the hyperextended domain from the European Upper Cretaceous carbonate platform. These paleogeographic reconstructions, in addition to offering a synthetic view of the evolution of sedimentary environments during rifting, offer new insight into the post-rifting exhumation of the lower crust and mantle.; Le bassin de Mauléon, localisé dans les Pyrénées nord-occidentales, subit une phase de rifting aboutissant à la dénudation du manteau au cours du Crétacé inférieur. Dans ce travail, nous synthétisons l’évolution des systèmes de dépôts Albien à Cénomanien du bassin de Mauléon. Cette synthèse inclut les lithologies, la répartition régionale, les limites stratigraphiques, les âges et les faciès des différentes formations et membres syn-rifts du bassin de Mauléon. Ces derniers ont été temporellement et spatialement corrélés afin de reconstruire des cartes paléogéographiques offrant une meilleure compréhension: (1) de la distribution 3D des faciès sédimentaires et des systèmes de dépôts de l’Albien au Cénomanien entre la marge proximale ibérique et le domaine hyper-aminci du bassin de Mauléon et (2) du lien entre les principales structures extensives et la sédimentation au cours du rifting et de la dénudation du manteau. De l’Albien inférieur à supérieur, le bassin de Mauléon était essentiellement alimenté depuis la marge proximale ibérique. La forte pente topographique de cette marge, est due à un basculement vers le nord provoqué par le détachement à vergence sud de Saint-Palais. Cette géométrie a favorisé des dépôts de conglomérats de bassin profond au pied de la marge ibérique passant de manière brutale à des faciès hémipélagiques du domaine hyper-aminci. De l’Albien terminal au Cénomanien inférieur, la vergence des systèmes de détachements s’inverse. Cette étape finale de structuration du bassin conduit à la dénudation du manteau dans la partie orientale du bassin. Des debris flows mineurs, issus de l’érosion sous-marine du mur des détachements à vergence nord, sédimentent au pied des escarpements de failles. À la même époque, les turbidites de faible densité, se déposent dans le domaine hyper-aminci, alimentées par un système deltaïque de polarité Ouest-Est provenant du domaine occidental de Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Au cours du stade postrift, les flux sédimentaires grossiers provenant des escarpements des détachements diminuent corrélativement avec la diminution du jeu tectonique sur ces accidents tandis que les turbidites de faible densité se déposent dans le domaine hyper-aminci proviennent de la plateforme carbonatée européenne. En plus d’offrir une vision synthétique de l’évolution des milieux sédimentaires lors du rifting, ces reconstructions paléogéographiques apportent de nouvelles réflexions quant à l’évaluation de l’exhumation de la croûte inférieure et du manteau.

International audience; Resolving the timing of initiation and propagation of continental accretion associated with increasing topography and exhumation is a genuinely challenging task using low-temperature thermochronology. We present an integrated thermo-mechanical and low-temperature thermochronology modelling study of tectonically-inverted hyperextended rift systems. Model low-temperature thermochronology data sets for apatite (U-Th)/He, apatite fission-track, zircon (U-Th)/He and zircon fission-track systems, which are four widely used thermochronometric systems in orogenic settings, are generated from fourteen locations across a model collisional, doubly-vergent orogen. Our approach allows prediction of specific, distinct low-temperature thermochronology signatures for each domain (proximal, necking, hyperextended, exhumed mantle) of the two rifted margins that, in turn, enable deciphering which parts of the margins are involved in orogenic wedge development. Our results show that a combination of zircon (U-Th)/He and apatite fission-track data allows diagnostic investigation of model orogen tectonics and offers the most valuable source of thermochronological information for the reconstruction of the crustal architecture of the model inverted rifted margins. The two thermochronometric systems have actually very close and wide closure windows, allowing to study orogenic processes over a larger temperature range, and therefore over a longer period of time. Comparison of model data for inverted rifted margins with model data for non-inverted, purely thermally-relaxed rifted margins enables assessing the actual contribution of tectonic inversion with respect to thermal relaxation. We apply this approach to one of the best-documented natural examples of inverted rift systems, the Pyrenees. Similarities between our thermochronometric modelling results and published low-temperature thermochronology data from the Pyrenees provide new insights into the evolution of the range from rifting to collision. In particular, they suggest that the core of the Pyrenean orogen, the Axial Zone, consists of the inverted lower plate necking and hyperextended domains while the Pyrenean retrowedge fold-and-thrust belt, the North Pyrenean Zone, represents the inverted upper plate distal rifted margin (exhumed mantle, hyperextended and necking domains). This is in good agreement with previous, independent reconstructions from literature, showing the power that our integrated study offers in identifying processes involved in orogenesis, especially early inversion, as well as in predicting which domains of rifted margins are accreted during mountain building.; Identifier au moyen de la thermochronologie basse température le moment à partir duquel l’accrétion continentale s’amorce et se propage est une tâche difficile. Dans cette étude, nous couplons modélisation thermomécanique de systèmes hyper-amincis inversés et thermochronologie basse température pour prédire la signature thermochronologique de quatre systèmes basse température communément utilisés en domaine orogénique ((U-Th)/He sur apatite, traces de fission sur apatite, (U-Th)/He sur zircon et traces de fission sur zircon). Notre approche de modélisation permet de prédire les signatures thermochronologiques basse température propres à chaque domaine de marge du système extensif (domaine proximal, zone de neck, domaine hyper-aminci et domaine de manteau exhumé). Ces signatures permettent en retour d’identifier les domaines de marge impliqués dans l’accrétion continentale qui suit l’extension. Nos résultats montrent que la combinaison des signatures thermochronologiques des systèmes (U-Th)/He sur zircon et traces de fission sur apatite renseigne sur les processus mis en jeu lors de la formation d’un orogène collisionnel à double vergence, ainsi que sur l’architecture des marges inversées durant l’orogénèse. Les deux systèmes thermochronométriques possèdent en effet des gammes de température de fermeture voisines et relativement larges, permettant d’étudier les processus orogéniques sur un intervalle de températures plus grand, et donc sur une période de temps plus longue. La comparaison des signatures thermochronologiques prédites dans un modèle thermomécanique d’inversion avec celles prédites dans un modèle de relaxation thermique, sans convergence postérieure à l’extension, permet d’apprécier la nécessaire contribution des processus tectoniques d’inversion par rapport au processus de relaxation thermique postrift. Nous appliquons notre approche à l’un des exemples naturels les mieux documentés de systèmes de rift inversé, les Pyrénées. Les similitudes qui existent entre nos prédictions thermochronométriques et les données de thermochronologie basse température publiées pour les Pyrénées fournissent de nouvelles informations sur la formation et l’évolution de l’orogène pyrénéen. En particulier, ces similitudes suggèrent que la zone interne de déformation pyrénéenne, la Zone Axial, est constituée des domaines de neck et hyper-aminci de la plaque inférieure, inversés durant l’accrétion, tandis que le prisme orogénique qui se développe sur la plaque européenne, la Zone Nord-pyrénéenne, représente la marge distale inversée de la plaque supérieure. Ce résultat est en accord avec les précédentes reconstructions publiées de la dynamique pyrénéenne, démontrant ainsi le potentiel de notre approche dans l’identification des processus impliqués dans l’orogenèse, notamment l’inversion précoce, ainsi que dans la prédiction du type de domaine de marge accrété lors de la formation des chaînes de montagnes.

Based on new structural, petrological and U-Th-Pb geochronological data, a reappraisal of the Variscan tectono-metamorphic history of the Pelvoux Massif (External Crystalline Massif, French Alps) is proposed with the aim to understand the flow pattern and kinematics of the Variscan partially molten crust and the Eastern Variscan Shear Zone. The Pelvoux Massif consists of high-grade metamorphic rocks of middle to lower crust, mostly migmatites, that record a prominent syn-metamorphic deformation event (D2) characterized by a pervasive NE-SW striking, steeply dipping, S2 foliation, and a network of anastomosed NS and NW-SE trending shear zones, the kinematics of which indicates a sinistral transpression. Relics of an early syn-metamorphic event (D1/M1) related to crustal thickening and top-to-the-east nappe stacking are also reported. Both the D1 and D2 features are interpreted as reflecting a NW-SE shortening event, firstly marked by dominant nappe stacking, and secondly overprinted by a sinistral transpression that started at peak metamorphism with the onset of crustal partial melting at ca. 650 °C during the late Visean (ca. 335–330 Ma). Ongoing sinistral D2 transpression in the partially molten middle-lower crust of the Pelvoux involved strain partitioning between C and C’ shear zones and horizontal longitudinal flow in the range 330–300 Ma. Along the anatectic front, vertical shortening and top-to-the-NW shearing (D3) is coeval with D2 and argue for southeastward motion of the partially molten crust. The contemporaneity between NW-SE directed transpressional flow and vertical shortening is supported by our radiometric data of D2 and D3 and attests for strain partitioning between the suprastructure and infrastructure during horizontal crustal flow under transpressive regime. The exhumation of deep-seated rocks during sinistral transpression followed a near isothermal (ca. 700 °C) evolution down to pressure of ca. 0.5 GPa in the period 325–306 Ma. The sinistral transpression recorded in the Pelvoux Massif might corresponds to an antithetic shear zone coeval with the dextral East-Variscan Shear Zone, proposed for this part of the Variscan orogen.

International audience; The origin of the diatoms still remains enigmatic. Their fossil record is scarce until the Late Cretaceous and great divergences exist between molecular data and the earliest fossil evidence. While molecular data indicate an origin during the Triassic or Early Jurassic, early fossil evidence is only from the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous. The discovery of diatoms in French mid-Cretaceous amber by the end of the 2000s already suggested a potential bias in the diatom fossil record as it made older many diatom lineages, the record of which hitherto began at the end of the Cretaceous. The Jurassic/Early Cretaceous fossil record of diatoms is extremely sparse and any new occurrence is important for retracing the evolutionary, palaeogeographical and palaeoenvironmental history of diatoms. Thai amber has yielded a new diatom specimen that has been attributed to the genus Hemiaulus . Fossil assemblages and sedimentological data indicate that Thai amber and its Hemiaulus specimen are Late Jurassic in age. This discovery represents the oldest hitherto known specimen of Hemiaulus and so extends the fossil record of the bipolar diatoms and of the genus Hemiaulus by several dozens of millions of years and brings closer the fossil evidence and molecular data (that estimated an origin of the bipolar diatoms about 150 Ma ago). It reinforces the hypothesis of a pre-Cretaceous fossil diatom records and also supports an origin of the diatoms in shallow coastal environments.; L’origine des diatomées reste toujours énigmatique. Leur registre fossile est rare jusqu’au Crétacé supérieur et il existe de grandes différences entre les données moléculaires et les premières évidences fossiles du groupe. Tandis que les données moléculaires indiquent une origine durant le Trias ou le Jurassique inférieur, les plus anciennes traces fossiles sont seulement de la fin du Jurassique, début du Crétacé. La découverte de diatomées dans l’ambre médio-crétacé français à la fin des années 2000 avait déjà suggéré un potentiel biais dans le registre fossile des diatomées car cela vieillissait plusieurs lignées précédemment connues uniquement à partir du Crétacé supérieur. Le registre fossile des diatomées du Jurassique et du Crétacé inférieur est extrêmement limité et toute nouvelle occurrence est importante pour retracer l’histoire évolutive, paléogéographique et paléoenvironnementale des diatomées. L’ambre de Thaïlande a permis la découverte d’un nouveau spécimen de diatomée attribué au genre Hemiaulus . Les données paléontologiques et sédimentologiques attestent que l’ambre thaïlandais et la diatomée qu’il contient sont d’âge Jurassique supérieur. Cette découverte représente le plus ancien spécimen du genre Hemiaulus connu à présent et étend donc le registre fossile des diatomées bipolaires et du genre Hemiaulus de plusieurs dizaines de millions d’années et rapproche ainsi le registre fossile des données moléculaires (qui estimaient l’origine des diatomées bipolaires à environ 150 millions d’années). Cela renforce l’hypothèse d’un registre fossile pré-crétacé et soutient une origine des diatomées au sein d’environnements marins néritiques.

International audience; In two companion papers, we report the detailed geological and mineralogical study of two emblematic serpentinized ultramafic bodies of the western North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ), the Urdach massif (this paper) and the Saraillé massif (paper 2). The peridotites have been exhumed to lower crustal levels during the Cretaceous rifting period in the future NPZ. They are associated with Mesozoic pre-rift metamorphic sediments and small units of thinned Paleozoic basement that were deformed during the mantle exhumation event. Based on detailed geological cross-sections and microprobe mineralogical analyses, we describe the lithology of the two major extensional fault zones that accommodated: (i) the progressive exhumation of the lherzolites along the Cretaceous basin axis; (ii) the lateral extraction of the continental crust beneath the rift shoulders and; (iii) the decoupling of the pre-rift cover along the Upper Triassic (Keuper) evaporites and clays, allowing its gliding and conservation in the basin center. These two fault zones are the (lower) crust-mantle detachment and the (upper) cover décollement located respectively at the crust-mantle boundary and at the base of the detached pre-rift cover. The Urdach peridotites were exposed to the seafloor during the Late Albian and underwent local pervasive carbonation and crystallization of calcite in a network of orthogonal veins (ophicalcites). The carbonated serpentinized peridotites were partly covered by debris-flows carrying fragments of both the ultramafics and Paleozoic crustal rocks now forming the polymictic Urdach breccia. The mantle rocks are involved in a Pyrenean overturned fold together with thin units of crustal mylonites. Continent-derived and mantle-derived fluids that circulated along the Urdach crust-mantle detachment led to the crystallization of abundant metasomatic rocks containing quartz, calcite, Cr-rich chlorites, Cr-rich white micas and pyrite. Two samples of metasomatized material from the crust-mantle detachment yielded in situ zircon U/Pb ages of 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma and 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma, thus confirming the Late Albian age of the metasomatic event. The cover décollement is a 30-m thick fault zone which also includes metasomatic rocks of greenschist facies, such as serpentine-calcite association and listvenites, indicating large-scale fluid-rock interactions implying both ultramafic and continental material. The lowermost pre-rift cover is generally missing along the cover décollement due to tectonic disruption during mantle exhumation and continental crust elision. Locally, metasomatized and strongly tectonized Triassic remnants are found as witnesses of the sole at the base of the detached pre-rift cover. We also report the discovery of a spherulitic alkaline lava flow emplaced over the exhumed mantle. These data collectively allow to propose a reconstruction of the architecture and fluid-rock interaction history of the distal domain of the upper Cretaceous northern Iberia margin now inverted in the NPZ.; Dans deux articles compagnons, nous décrivons la géologie et la minéralogie de deux massifs de péridotites serpentinisées représentatifs de la Zone Nord-Pyrénéenne (ZNP) occidentale, le massif d’Urdach (cet article) et le massif du Saraillé (article 2). Les péridotites ont été portées vers les niveaux crustaux supérieurs durant l’épisode de rifting pyrénéen crétacé qui a affecté la future ZNP. Elles sont associées à des sédiments métamorphiques pré-rift et à des lambeaux de croûte Paléozoïque déformée durant l’exhumation. En s’appuyant sur des descriptions de coupes géologiques et des analyses de minéraux à la microsonde, nous précisons la lithologie de deux failles extensives majeures qui ont permis : (i) la remontée des lherzolites sous l’axe du bassin ; (ii) l’extraction latérale de la croûte continentale sous les bordures du rift et ; (iii) le découplage et le glissement de la couverture pré-rift le long des évaporites et argiles du Keuper. Ces deux zones de faille sont le détachement croûte-manteau (inférieur) et le décollement de couverture (supérieur) situés respectivement à la limite croûte-manteau et à la base de de la série pré-rift glissée. Les péridotites d’Urdach ont été mises à l’affleurement sur le fond marin où elles ont subi une carbonatation interne partielle accompagnée de cristallisation de calcite dans un réseau de veines orthogonales (ophicalcites). Les serpentinites ont été recouvertes partiellement par la brèche d’Urdach formée d’écoulements de débris ultramafiques et paléozoïques. Les roches du manteau sont engagées avec de minces lentilles de mylonites crustales dans un pli deversé vers l’ouest. Des fluides d’origine mantellique et continentale ont circulé le long du détachement croûte-manteau et ont permis la cristallisation de roches métasomatiques renfermant : quartz, calcite, chlorite et mica riches en Cr, et pyrite. Deux échantillons de ces roches métasomatiques ont fourni des âges U/Pb in situ sur zircons de 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma et 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma confirmant ainsi l’âge Albien supérieur de cet événement métasomatique. Le décollement de couverture renferme aussi des roches métasomatiques (associations calcite-serpentine et listvénites), témoignant d’échanges fluide-roche à grande échelle à partir de matériel mantellique et crustal. La base de la couverture pré-rift a subi une troncature basale lors de l’exhumation du manteau et des résidus triasiques très déformés sont présents à la base de la série pré-rift décollée. Nous avons également découvert une coulée de lave sphérulitique alcaline mise en place sur le manteau exhumé. Cet ensemble de données sur le massif d’Urdach permet de proposer une reconstitution au Crétacé supérieur de l’histoire des fluides et de l’architecture du domaine distal de la marge nord ibérique aujourd’hui inversée dans la ZNP.

Two samples of metasomatized material from the crust-mantle detachment yielded in situ zircon U/Pb ages of 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma and 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma, thus confirming the Late Albian age of the metasomatic event. The cover décollement is a 30-m thick fault zone which also includes metasomatic rocks of greenschist facies, such as serpentine-calcite association and listvenites, indicating large-scale fluid-rock interactions implying both ultramafic and continental material. The lowermost pre-rift cover is generally missing along the cover décollement due to tectonic disruption during mantle exhumation and continental crust elision. Locally, metasomatized and strongly tectonized Triassic remnants are found as witnesses of the sole at the base of the detached pre-rift cover. We also report the discovery of a spherulitic alkaline lava flow emplaced over the exhumed mantle. These data collectively allow to propose a reconstruction of the architecture and fluid-rock interaction history of the distal domain of the upper Cretaceous northern Iberia margin now inverted in the NPZ.; Dans deux articles compagnons, nous décrivons la géologie et la minéralogie de deux massifs de péridotites serpentinisées représentatifs de la Zone Nord-Pyrénéenne (ZNP) occidentale, le massif d’Urdach (cet article) et le massif du Saraillé (article 2). Les péridotites ont été portées vers les niveaux crustaux supérieurs durant l’épisode de rifting pyrénéen crétacé qui a affecté la future ZNP. Elles sont associées à des sédiments métamorphiques pré-rift et à des lambeaux de croûte Paléozoïque déformée durant l’exhumation. En s’appuyant sur des descriptions de coupes géologiques et des analyses de minéraux à la microsonde, nous précisons la lithologie de deux failles extensives majeures qui ont permis : (i) la remontée des lherzolites sous l’axe du bassin ; (ii) l’extraction latérale de la croûte continentale sous les bordures du rift et ; (iii) le découplage et le glissement de la couverture pré-rift le long des évaporites et argiles du Keuper. Ces deux zones de faille sont le détachement croûte-manteau (inférieur) et le décollement de couverture (supérieur) situés respectivement à la limite croûte-manteau et à la base de de la série pré-rift glissée. Les péridotites d’Urdach ont été mises à l’affleurement sur le fond marin où elles ont subi une carbonatation interne partielle accompagnée de cristallisation de calcite dans un réseau de veines orthogonales (ophicalcites). Les serpentinites ont été recouvertes partiellement par la brèche d’Urdach formée d’écoulements de débris ultramafiques et paléozoïques. Les roches du manteau sont engagées avec de minces lentilles de mylonites crustales dans un pli deversé vers l’ouest. Des fluides d’origine mantellique et continentale ont circulé le long du détachement croûte-manteau et ont permis la cristallisation de roches métasomatiques renfermant : quartz, calcite, chlorite et mica riches en Cr, et pyrite. Deux échantillons de ces roches métasomatiques ont fourni des âges U/Pb in situ sur zircons de 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma et 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma confirmant ainsi l’âge Albien supérieur de cet événement métasomatique. Le décollement de couverture renferme aussi des roches métasomatiques (associations calcite-serpentine et listvénites), témoignant d’échanges fluide-roche à grande échelle à partir de matériel mantellique et crustal. La base de la couverture pré-rift a subi une troncature basale lors de l’exhumation du manteau et des résidus triasiques très déformés sont présents à la base de la série pré-rift décollée. Nous avons également découvert une coulée de lave sphérulitique alcaline mise en place sur le manteau exhumé. Cet ensemble de données sur le massif d’Urdach permet de proposer une reconstitution au Crétacé supérieur de l’histoire des fluides et de l’architecture du domaine distal de la marge nord ibérique aujourd’hui inversée dans la ZNP.

International audience; In the Brioude-Massiac district (French Massif Central: FMC), a network of WAs -Bi-Au quartz veins constitutes the Bonnac deposit, where tungsten is the major economic element, together with high-grade gold (up to 15 g/t Au). The evolution of this mineralization has been divided into 3 stages: (i) an early deep-seated wolframite-löllingite stage formed between 12 to 9 km, at up to 400°C; (ii) a ductile/brittle deformation stage associated with scheelite and arsenopyrite deposition, with an estimated temperature of 480-300°C; (iii) a late stage controlled by fluid-overpressure potentially triggered by fault-valve mechanism, at a depth of 7 to 5 km, and a temperature estimated between 266 to 240°C, is marked by microfracturing infilled by native bismuth, bismuthinite, hedleyite, electrum, pyrite and base-metals. Structural analysis and apatite LA-ICP-MS U/Pb dating demonstrate a spatial and temporal link between the emplacement of the peraluminous leucogranitic dykes and the Bonnac mineralization. In more details, the mineralization was deposited between 321-316 Ma, during, or just after, the emplacement of the peraluminous dykes estimated around 329-315 Ma, suggesting a magmatic-hydrothermal transition for the ore-forming process. In the proposed model, the cooling of a hidden two-mica granitic pluton could have generated a magmatic fluid, and acted as the heat source responsible for fluid flow towards inherited permeability zones. The magmatic fluid could have then re-equilibrated at high temperature by fluid-rocks interaction. The sharp changes in pressure, associated with the decrease of the temperature, and sulfidefugacity generated by a late input of meteoric fluid were responsible for the deposition of the late gold-stage. At the regional scale, the tungsten-gold event is ascribed to an early hydrothermal stage, dissociated from the formation of the antimony event in the district. The leucogranitic dykes and Bonnac quartz veins are controlled by a NW-SE stretching direction, interpreted as an expression of the Serpukhovian-Bashkirian syn-orogenic extension (D4 event of the FMC). These new data provide evidence for an early tungsten and gold metallogenic event in the FMC, prior the "Or300" event. The genetic classification of the Bonnac mineralization is equivocal. The WAs -Bi-Au-quartz veins exhibit the features of both an "orogenic gold" deposit at a relatively deep emplacement level (mesozonal), and an Intrusion-Related-Gold-Deposit (IRGD) type with a spatial-temporal link with the peraluminous intrusion emplacement. We propose that the Bonnac deposits represent an intermediate type between a typical orogenic-gold deposit and an IRGD. We argue that the presence of economic high-grade gold content in tungsten vein-type, and more generally the IRGD deposits, have been underestimated in the Variscan French Massif Central.

International audience; A new Cenomanian amber- and plant-bearing deposit has been discovered at Neau, in the Mayenne department (France). The Cenomanian fossiliferous lignites are located in karst filling in a substratum of Cambrian limestones. The amber corresponds mainly to tiny millimetric grains, devoid of arthropod inclusions, but rich in microorganisms, especially the sheated bacteria Leptotrichites resinatus , and containing pollen grains ( Classopollis ) and wood fibers (Araucariacae or Cheirolepidiaceae). The lignites provide abundant conifer and ginkgoale cuticle fragments ( Frenelopsis , Eretmophyllum ) and a lot of palynomorphs ( e.g. Gleicheniidites senonicu s, Cyathidites , Deltoidospora , Appendicisporites and Cicatricosisporites ). The chemical signature of the amber suggests it was produced by conifers of the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. According to the palynological assemblage, the age of the lignites is upper lower Cenomanian or lower mid Cenomanian. The deposit environment corresponded to the upstream portion of a mangrove or the most inner part of a lagoon.; Un nouveau site à ambre et plantes du Cénomanien a été découvert à Neau, en Mayenne (France). Les lignites fossilifères cénomaniens sont localisés dans des remplissages de karsts développés dans des calcaires du Cambrien. L’ambre se présente essentiellement sous forme de grains millimétriques, dépouvus d’inclusions d’arthropode, mais riches en microorganismes, notamment en bactéries gainées de type Leptotrichites resinatus , et contenant des grains de pollen ( Classopollis ) et des fibres de bois (Araucariacae ou Cheirolepidiaceae). Les lignites fournissent d’abondants fragments de cuticules de conifères et de ginkgoales ( Frenelopsis , Eretmophyllum ) et une grande quantité de palynomorphes ( e.g. Gleicheniidites senonicu s, Cyathidites , Deltoidospora , Appendicisporites et Cicatricosisporites ). La signature chimique de l’ambre suggère qu’il a été produit par des conifères de la famille éteinte des Cheirolépidiacées. D’après l’assemblage palynologique, l’âge des lignites est Cénomanien inférieur tardif ou Cénomanien moyen basal. L’environnement de dépôt correspondait à la partie amont d’une mangrove ou la partie la plus interne d’un lagon.

International audience; Fossil spermatozoa are extremely rare. Among the eight cases reported here, including two cases of spermatophores without visible sperm cells, six are fossils preserved in amber. All six concern examples of indirect sperm transfer by means of spermatophores or spermatodesmids. Preservation of subcellular organelles shows once again that amber is an extraordinary preservation medium.; Les spermatozoïdes fossiles sont très rares. Parmi les huit cas que nous rapportons ici, dont deux cas de spermatophores sans spermatozoïdes visibles, six sont des fossiles conservés dans l’ambre. Les six concernent un transfert indirect des spermatozoïdes par l’intermédiaire de spermatophores ou de spermatodesmes. La préservation d’organites subcellulaires montre une fois de plus que l’ambre est un milieu de conservation exceptionnel.

International audience; Embolemidae is a cosmopolitan but species-poor group of chrysidoid wasps with a scarce fossil record, despite a long evolutionary history since at least the Early Cretaceous. Here, the new species, Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensis sp. nov., is illustrated and described based on a single female found in Early Eocene amber of Oise (France). The new species is compared with the three other known fossil species of the genus, and a key to all fossil species of Ampulicomorpha is provided. This is the third European fossil species of Ampulicomorpha, which suggests that the genus was once well established in Western Europe while it is more widely distributed in the Eastern Palaearctic region today. A list of all fossil and extant Embolemidae of the world, as well as a map of their geographical distribution map, are provided. Résumé-; Une nouvelle espèce d'Ampulicomorpha Ashmead (Hymenoptera : Chrysidoidea) dans l'ambre éocène de France. Les Embolemidés sont un groupe cosmopolite mais peu diversifié de guêpes chrysidoïdes au registre fossile rare, malgré une longue histoire évolutive depuis au moins le Crétacé inférieur. Une nouvelle espèce, Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensis sp. nov., est illustrée et décrite à partir d'une femelle trouvée dans l'ambre éocène inférieur de l'Oise (France). Elle est comparée aux trois autres espèces connues pour ce genre et une clé des espèces fossiles d'Ampulicomorpha est proposée. Il s'agit de la troisième espèce européenne fossile d'Ampulicomorpha, ce qui suggère que le genre était autrefois bien établi en Europe de l'Ouest alors qu'il est davantage présent dans l'Est de la région Paléarctique aujourd'hui. Une liste des espèces fossiles et actuelles d'Embolemidae du monde ainsi qu'une carte de leur distribution géographique sont aussi proposées.

International audience; The paleontological interest for fossil plant resins (amber and copal) has greatly increased in thelast decades, as field studies have resulted in the discovery of various new deposits worldwide. Yet, amberrichdeposits remain particularly scarce on continents from former Gondwana. Here we review the knownoccurrences of copal and amber from Africa, with a state-of-the-art regarding the age dating, the putativeplant sources, the fossil content, as well as the paleoenvironmental settings. The first African ambers knownto yield arthropods and other organismal inclusions, found recently from the early Cretaceous of Congo andthe Miocene of Ethiopia, are briefly overviewed.; L’intérêt paléontologique pour les résines végétales fossiles (ambre et copal) s’estfortement accru ces dernières décennies, les études de terrain ayant permis la découverte de divers nouveauxgisements à travers le monde. Les gisements riches en ambre demeurent néanmoins particulièrement raressur les continents autrefois gondwaniens. Nous révisons ici les occurrences connues de copal et d’ambre enAfrique, avec un bilan concernant la datation, les sources botaniques probables, le contenu fossile, ainsi quele contexte paléoenvironnemental. Les premiers ambres africains livrant des arthropodes et autres inclusionsorganiques fossiles, découverts récemment dans le Crétacé inférieur du Congo et le Miocène d’Ethiopie,sont brièvement présentés.

International audience; The Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous tectonic evolution of SE Siberia was marked by the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk ocean. While this geodynamic event led to compressive deformation and denudation in a wide area encompassing the North-Altay, Sayan and Baikal Patom ranges, it was contemporaneous to widespread extension from the Transbaikal region situated immediately north of the suture zone to the Pacific plate, affecting eastern Mongolia and northeastern China. In this study we review the paleontological and sedimentological data available in the Russian literature and provide new macro-floral and palynological data from the Mesozoic sediments of three Transbaikal basins. These data are used to describe the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic evolution of the Transbaikal area in order to assess the topographic evolution of the region in relation with the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk ocean. We establish that the Transbaikal basins evolved in a continuously extensional tectonic setting from at least the Early-Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. The associated sedimentary environments are characterized by retrogradation from alluvial fan –braided river dominated systems prevailing during the Early to Middle Jurassic initial opening of the basins to meandering river–lacustrine systems that developed during the Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous interval. No evidence of high relief topography was found and we conclude that, while compression and denudation occurred in the North Altai, Sayan and Patom ranges, in the Transbaikal region, the docking of the Mongolia-North China continent to Siberia was a “soft collision” event, possibly involving a major strike-slip displacement that did not lead to an orogenic event implying strong compressive deformation, crustal thickening and topography building.

Models of hydrogeology must deal with both heterogeneity and lack of data. We consider in this paper a flow and transport model for an inert solute. The conductivity is a random field following a stationary log normal distribution with an exponential or Gaussian covariance function, with a very small correlation length. The quantities of interest studied here are the expectation of the spatial mean velocity, the equivalent permeability and the macro spreading. In particular, the asymptotic behavior of the plume is characterized, leading to large simulation times, consequently to large physical domains. Uncertainty is dealt with a classical Monte Carlo method, which turns out to be very efficient, thanks to the ergodicity of the conductivity field and to the very large domain. These large scale simulations are achieved by means of high performance computing algorithms and tools.

International audience; Many Archaean and Paleoproterozoic cratons show deformation patterns that differ from those observed in modern orogens. On the other hand, they constitute an important part of present-day emerged continents and contain a large part of continental mineral resources known to date. On the basis of a summary of structural data from some typical field examples and of results of analogue modelling, we emphasize that pop-down tectonics marked by vertical burial of supracrustals within an underlying hot and weak crust may be the most suitable model to account for deformation patterns of many ancient deformation zones. An overview of relationships between structural patterns and mineralisation in several ancient deformation zones further emphasizes that pop-down tectonics provides a very promising structural framework for mining exploration in Precambrian cratons.; De nombreux cratons Archéens et Paléoprotérozoïques montrent des champs de déformations qui diffèrent de ceux typiques des zones orogéniques modernes. Parallèlement, ces cratons constituent une part importante des domaines continentaux actuels et contiennent une grande part des ressources minérales qui y sont connues à ce jour. Une synthèse des données structurales sur quelques exemples de terrain représentatifs et de résultats de modélisations analogiques montre qu’une tectonique verticale marquée par l’enfouissement de dépôts de croûte supérieure dans une croûte sous-jacente chaude et molle est le meilleur modèle qui rende compte des structures caractéristiques de beaucoup de zones de déformation précambriennes. Un aperçu des relations entre structures et minéralisationshowing main mineral deposits on contine dans plusieurs zones de déformation montre en outre que ce modèle fournit un cadre structural très prometteur pour l’exploration minière dans les cratons anciens.

30-35 Ma ago a major change occurred in the Mediterranean region, from a regionally compressional subduction coeval with the formation of Alpine mountain belts, to extensional subduction and backarc rifting. Backarc extension was accompanied by gravitational spreading of the mountain belts formed before this Oligocene revolution. Syn-rift basins formed during this process above detachments and low-angle normal faults. Parameters that control the formation and the kinematics of such flat-lying detachments are still poorly understood. From the Aegean Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Alboran Sea, we have analysed onshore the deformation and P-T-t evolution of the ductile crust exhumed by extension, and the transition from ductile to brittle conditions as well as the relations between deep deformation and basin formation. We show that the sense of shear along crustal-scale detachments is toward the trench when subduction proceeds with little or no convergence (northern Tyrrhenian and Alboran after 20 Ma) and away from the trench in the case of true convergence (Aegean). We tentatively propose a scheme explaining how interactions between the subducting slab and the mantle control the basal shear below the upper plate and the geometry and distribution of detachments and associated sedimentary basins. We propose that ablative subduction below the Aegean is responsible for the observed kinematics on detachments (i.e. away from the trench). The example of the Betic Cordillera and the Rif orogen, where the directions of stretching were different in the lower and the upper crust and changed through time, is also discussed following this hypothesis.

A 3-D model of the Paris basin was constructed to reconstitute its 248 m.y. geologic history from the Trias to the present. The model is based on detailed stratigraphic and lithographic data from about 1,100 petroleum drillings. Its scale is regional and it covers a surface area of 700,000 km2, which exceeds the present extent of the basin in order to allow the paleogeographic evolution of the European plate to be taken into account. The geological history is simulated with the numerical model NEWBAS from the Ecole des Mines de Paris. The model simulates sedimentation, erosion, compaction, fluid flow and processes of solute and heat transport. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the value of this type of modelling for estimating and quantifying the role of fluid circulation in geological processes. Studies of diagenetic cements in the Dogger and Keuper aquifers in the Paris basin have often led their authors to consider the involvement of regional fluid circulation. These studies provide estimates of paleotemperature and paleosalinity which impose constraints on the modelling but the latter may, in turn, contribute to date the events and estimate the relevant processes. By reconstructing heat and salt transport, as proposed in this article, it is therefore possible to define the influence of hydrodynamics on these processes. The history of heat and salt in the basin is shown at various stages on a representative NW-SE cross-section of a present-day flow line which is also valid for Tertiary times. We demonstrate that the role of hydrodynamics may be predominant for salt transport by gravity-driven flow, which explains the salinity increase in the Keuper aquifer and the role of the Bray fault in the salinisation of the Dogger. Although the heat transport is dominated by the conductive component, it is also influenced by the hydrodynamics with a possible convective cooling effect when the head in the aquifers increased at the end of the Tertiary erosion period. This may partly explain the higher temperatures, deduced from fluid inclusions in the Keuper, at the end of the chalk deposition as compared to present ones. According to our simulations, the early Tertiary is the period most compatible with the diagenetic observations for thermal (maximum burial and convective cooling effect) and chemical reasons (topography allowing migration of brines in the Keuper and the Dogger).
