We use the zero-range post-form DWBA approximation to calculate deuteron elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections and estimate the breakup-fusion cross section that could serve as a surrogate for a neutron-induced reaction cross section. We compare the angular momentum dependence of the breakup-fusion compound nucleus formation cross section with that of the corresponding neutron-induced cross section.

The compound nucleus plays an important role in nuclear reactions over a wide range of projectile-target combinations and energies. The limits that angular momentum places on its formation and existence are, for the most part, well understood. The limits on its excitation energy are not as clear. Here we first analyze general geometrical and thermodynamical features of a hot compound nucleus. We then discuss the manners by which it can decay and close by speculating on the high energy limit to its formation and existence.

Coulomb breakup of unstable neutron rich nuclei 29,30Na around the ‘island of inversion’ has been studied at energy around 434 MeV/nucleon and 409 MeV/nucleon respectively. Four momentum vectors of fragments, decay neutron from excited projectile and γ-rays emitted from excited fragments after Coulomb breakup are measured in coincidence. For these nuclei, the low-lying dipole strength above one neutron threshold can be explained by direct breakup model. The analysis for Coulomb breakup of 29,30Na shows that large amount of the cross section yields the 28Na, 29Na core in ground state. The predominant ground-state configuration of 29,30Na is found to be 28Na(g.s)⊗νs1/2 and 29Na(g.s)⊗νs1/2,respectively.

Neutron-rich 34,35Al isotopes have been studied through Coulomb excitation using LAND-FRS setup at GSI, Darmstadt. The method of invariant mass analysis has been used to reconstruct the excitation energy of the nucleus prior to decay. Comparison of experimental CD cross-section with direct breakup model calculation with neutron in p3/2 orbital favours 34Al(g.s)⊗νp3/2 as ground state configuration of 35Al. But ground state configuration of 34Al is complicated as evident from γ-ray spectra of 33Al after Coulomb breakup of 34Al.

Bohr's conception of the compound nucleus is based on the idea of ‘longlived’ nuclear states in which all single particles are bound. We briefly discuss the properties of the density of bound states and then use two prescriptions, that of Brack and Quentin and that of Bonche, Levit e Vautherin to calculate the equivalent temperaturedependent quantity – the Helmholtz free energy.We compare the temperature dependence of the latter, as well as that of the excitation energy and entropy, obtained using the two prescriptions in self-consistent calculations within the relativistic Hartree and Skyrme models. We then discuss the extended, temperature-dependent liquid-drop approximation to the excitation and free energies obtained from fits to the self-consistent calculations over a wide range of charge and mass numbers.

Griffin's exciton model of pre-equilibrium emission and Blann's hybrid model have proven extremely successful in describing the energy dependence and, to a certain extent the angular dependence, of nucleon and composite particle emission in preequilibrium reactions. However, the conceptual basis of these models was called into question by Bisplinghoff already some time ago. In response to Bisplinghoff, Blann proposed the hybrid Monte Carlo simulation model (HMS), which uses only the densities of available states for creation and decay of single particle-hole pairs. The model was later extended, in collaboration with Chadwick, to the double-differential HMS, which we call the DDHMS. This extension is based on the Chadwick-Obložinský prescription for pproximating the energy-angular distribution of available two-particle-one-hole states. Here, we show how this distribution can be calculated exactly.
