Local gravitational instability (LGI) is considered crucial for regulating star formation and gas turbulence in galaxy discs, especially at high redshift. Instability criteria usually assume infinitesimally thin discs or rely on approximations to include the stabilising effect of the gas disc thickness. We test a new 3D instability criterion for rotating gas discs that are vertically stratified in an external potential. This criterion reads Q3D < 1, where Q3D is the 3D analogue of the Toomre parameter Q. The advantage of Q3D is that it allows us to study LGI in and above the galaxy midplane in a rigorous and self-consistent way. We apply the criterion to a sample of 44 star-forming galaxies at 0 ≲ z ≲ 5 hosting rotating discs of cold gas. The sample is representative of galaxies on the main sequence at z ≈ 0 and includes massive star-forming and starburst galaxies at 1 ≲ z ≲ 5. For each galaxy, we first apply the Toomre criterion for infinitesimally thin discs, finding ten unstable systems. We then obtain maps of Q3D from a 3D model of the gas disc derived in the combined potential of dark matter, stars and the gas itself. According to the 3D criterion, two galaxies with Q < 1 show no evidence of instability and the unstable regions that are 20% smaller than those where Q < 1. No unstable disc is found at 0 ≲ z ≲ 1, while ≈60% of the systems at 2 ≲ z ≲ 5 are locally unstable. In these latter, a relatively small fraction of the total gas (≈30%) is potentially affected by the instability. Our results disfavour LGI as the main regulator of star formation and turbulence in moderately star-forming galaxies in the present-day Universe. LGI likely becomes important at high redshift, but the input by other mechanisms seems required in a significant portion of the disc. Aims. We study a new mechanism of dust accumulation and planetesimal formation in a gravitationally unstable disk with suppressed magnetorotational instability and we compare it with the classical dead zone in a layered disk model. Methods. We used numerical hydrodynamics simulations in the thin-disk limit (FEOSAD code) to model the formation and long-term evolution of gravitationally unstable disks, including dust dynamics and growth. Results. We found that in gravitationally unstable disks with a radially varying strength of gravitational instability (GI), an inner region (of several astronomical units) of low mass and angular momentum transport is formed. This region is characterized by a low effective value for the αGI parameter, often used to describe the efficiency of mass transport by GI in young protoplanetary disks. The inner region is also similar in terms of characteristics to the dead zone in the layered disk model. As the disk forms and evolves, the GI-induced dead zone accumulates a massive dust ring, which is susceptible to the development of the streaming instability. The model and observationally inferred dust masses and radii may differ significantly in gravitationally unstable disks with massive inner dust rings. Conclusions. The early occurrence of the GI-induced dust ring, followed by the development of the streaming instability suggest that this mechanism may be behind the formation of the first generation of planetesimals in the inner terrestrial zone of the disk. The proposed mechanism, however, crucially depends on the susceptibility of the disk to gravitational instability and requires the magnetorotational instability to be suppressed. Context. Hydrodynamic simulations of the migration of planets formed by gravitational instability suggest that after an initial phase of fast migration, planets can open gaps and continue to migrate on a type II migration timescale. The simulation time length is typically on the order of 104 yr. Aims. We study the effects of the subsequent type II migration during the disk lifetime on the final orbital radii of planets. Methods. We used a numerical disk model that follows the disk formation and evolution. The disk acquires mass through the mass influx from the collapse of its parent molecular cloud core. The model reflects the influence of the properties of the parent core on the disk. Considering clumps forming at different times in a disk and also in different disks with different parent core properties, we used the type II migration rate to follow the clump migration from the formation location. We studied the dependence of the clump migration on the properties of the parent core. Results. The mass influx drag enhances the migration process. The duration and viscosity of gravitational instability, viscosity in the dead zone, and the collapse time of the parent core play important roles in planet migration. As the angular momentum and mass of the parent core increase, migration is enhanced. The final radius is sensitive to the initial radius. Clumps forming at large radii might migrate outward with the disk expansion. Conclusions. Even though type II migration is slow, clumps can migrate over significant distances. A considerable proportion of clumps migrate to the central protostar via type II migration. Our calculations support the idea that the observed pile-up of planets at <0.3 AU is explained by a scenario where planets might form at large radii, then migrate to orbits of <0.3 AU, and halt by a stopping mechanism at this location. Context. The model of disc fragmentation due to gravitational instabilities offers an alternate formation mechanism for gas giant planets, especially those on wide orbits. Aims. Our goal is to determine the 3D structure of disc-instability protoplanets and to examine how this relates to the thermal physics of the fragmentation process. Methods. We modelled the fragmentation of gravitationally unstable discs using the SPH code PHANTOM, and followed the evolution of the protoplanets formed through the first and second-hydrostatic core phases (up to densities 10−3 g cm−3). Results. We find that the 3D structure of disc-instability protoplanets is affected by the disc environment and the formation history of each protoplanet (e.g. interactions with spiral arms, mergers). The large majority of the protoplanets that form in the simulations are oblate spheroids rather than spherical, and they accrete faster from their poles. Conclusions. The 3D structure of disc-instability protoplanets is expected to affect their observed properties and should be taken into account when interpreting observations of protoplanets embedded in their parent discs. Aims. Our main goal is to probe the persistence of turbulence originating from the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) in gravito-turbulent disks. This state is referred to here as GI-MRI coexistence, with GI standing for gravitational instability. We test the influence of GI strength, controlled by the cooling law, and the impact of Ohmic resistivity. Methods. Our starting point was three-dimensional, ideal, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of gravitational turbulence in the local shearing-box approximation using the code Athena. We introduced a zero-net-flux magnetic seed field in a GI-turbulent state and investigated the nonlinear evolution. The GI strength was varied by modifying the cooling parameters. We tested the cooling times τcΩ0 = 10, τcΩ0 = 20, and τcΩ0 = 10, with additional background heating. For some resistive cases, ideal-MHD simulations, which had already developed GI-MRI coexistence, were restarted with a finite Ohmic resistivity enabled at the moment of restart. Results. It appears that there are two possible saturated dynamo states in the ideal-MHD regime: a state of GI-MRI coexistence (for low GI activity) and a strong-GI dynamo. The cases with lower GI activity eventually develop a clearly visible butterfly pattern. For the case with the highest GI activity (τcΩ0 = 10, no heating), a clearly visible butterfly pattern is absent, though more chaotic field reversals are observed above (and below) the mid-plane. We were also able to reproduce the results of previous simulations. With Ohmic resistivity, the simulation outcome can be substantially different. There exists a critical magnetic Reynolds number, ⟨Rm⟩  ∼  500, below which the ideal-MHD outcome is replaced by a new dynamo state. For larger Reynolds numbers, one recovers turbulent states that are more reminiscent of the ideal-MHD states, and especially the strong-GI case. This new state leads to oscillations, which are caused by a significant heat production due to the resistive dissipation of magnetic energy. There is growing evidence that broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have regular substructures, such as spiral arms. This is supported by the fact that the radii of BLRs measured by reverberation mapping (RM) observations are generally consistent with the self-gravitating regions of accretion disks. We showed in Paper I that the spiral arms excited by the gravitational instabilities in these regions may exist in some disk-like BLRs. Here, in the second paper of the series, we investigate the loosely wound spiral arms excited by gravitational instabilities in disk-like BLRs and present their observational characteristics. We solve the governing integro-differential equation by a matrix scheme. The emission-line profiles, velocity-delay maps, and velocity-resolved lags of the BLR spiral arms are calculated. We find that the spiral arms can explain some of the phenomena seen in observations: (1) different asymmetries in the emission-line profiles in the mean and rms spectra; (2) complex subfeatures (incomplete ellipse) in some velocity-delay maps, for example that of NGC 5548; and (3) the short timescales of the asymmetry changes in emission-line profiles (rms spectra). These features are attractive for modeling the observed line profiles and the properties of reverberation, and for revealing the details of the BLR geometry and kinematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Recent surveys indicate that planets in binary systems are more abundant than previously thought, which is in agreement with theoretical work on disc dynamics and planet formation in binaries. So far, most observational surveys, however, have focused on short-period planets in binaries, thus little is known about the occurrence rates of planets on longer periods (≥10 au). Aims. In order to measure the abundance and physical characteristics of wide-orbit giant exoplanets in binary systems, we have designed the "VIsual Binary Exoplanet survey with Sphere" (VIBES) to search for planets in visual binaries. It uses the SPHERE instrument at VLT to search for planets in 23 visual binary and four visual triple systems with ages of <145 Myr and distances of <150 pc. Methods. We used the IRDIS dual-band imager on SPHERE to acquire high-contrast images of the sample targets. For each binary, the two components were observed at the same time with a coronagraph masking only the primary star. For the triple star, the tight components were treated as a single star for data reduction. This enabled us to effectively search for companions around 50 individual stars in binaries and four binaries in triples. Results. We derived upper limits of <13.7% for the frequency of sub-stellar companions around primaries in visual binaries, <26.5% for the fraction of sub-stellar companions around secondaries in visual binaries, and an occurrence rate of <9.0% for giant planets and brown dwarfs around either component of visual binaries. We have combined our observations with literature measurements to astrometrically confirm, for the first time, that 20 binaries and two triple systems, which were previously known, are indeed physically bound. Finally, we discovered a third component of the binary HD 121336. Conclusions. The upper limits we derived are compatible with planet formation through the core accretion and the gravitational instability processes in binaries. Aims. The response of a protoplanetary disk to luminosity bursts of various durations is studied with the purpose to determine the effect of the bursts on the strength and sustainability of gravitational instability in the disk. A special emphasis is paid to the spatial distribution of gas and grown dust (from 1 mm to a few centimetres) during and after the burst. Methods. Numerical hydrodynamics simulations were employed to study the dynamics of gas and dust in the thin-disk limit. Dust-to-gas friction, including back reaction and dust growth, were also considered. Bursts of various durations (from 100 yr to 500 yr) were initiated in accordance with a thermally ignited magnetorotational instability. Luminosity curves for constant- and declining-magnitude bursts were adopted to represent two typical limiting cases for FU Orionis-type eruptions. Results. The short-term effect of the burst is to reduce the strength of gravitational instability by heating and expanding the disk. The longest bursts with durations comparable to the revolution period of the spiral can completely dissolve the original two-armed spiral pattern in the gas disk by the end of the burst, while the shortest bursts only weaken the spiral pattern. The reaction of grown dust to the burst is somewhat different. The spiral-like initial distribution with deep cavities in the inter-armed regions transforms into a ring-like distribution with deep gaps. This transformation is mostly expressed for the longest-duration bursts. The long-term effect of the burst depends on the initial disk conditions at the onset of the burst. In some cases, vigorous disk fragmentation sets in several thousands of years after the burst, which was absent in the model without the burst. Several clumps with masses in the giant-planet mass range form in the outer disk regions. After the disk fragmentation phase, the spatial distribution of grown dust is characterized by multiple sharp rings located from tens to hundreds of astronomical units. The arrangement and sharpness of the rings depends on the strength of dust turbulent diffusion. The wide-orbit rings are likely formed as the result of dust-rich clump dispersal in the preceding gravitationally unstable phase. Conclusions. Luminosity bursts similar in magnitude to FU Orionis-type eruptions can have a profound effect on the dynamics of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks if the burst duration is comparable to, or longer than, the dynamical timescales. In this context, the spatial morphology of the gas-dust disk of V883 Ori, a FU Orionis-like object that is thought to be in the outburst phase for more than a century with an unknown onset date, may be used as test case for the burst models considered in this work. Here, we address the turbulent dynamics of the gravitational instability in accretion disks, retaining both radiative cooling and irradiation. Due to radiative cooling, the disk is unstable for all values of the Toomre parameter, and an accurate estimate of the maximum growth rate is derived analytically. A detailed study of the turbulent spectra shows a rapid decay with an azimuthal wave number stronger than ky−3 k y − 3 $ k_y^{-3} $ , whereas the spectrum is more broad in the radial direction and shows a scaling in the range kx−3 k x − 3 $ k_x^{-3} $ to kx−2 k x − 2 $ k_x^{-2} $. The radial component of the radial velocity profile consists of a superposition of shocks of different heights, and is similar to that found in Burgers' turbulence. Assuming saturation occurs through nonlinear wave steepening leading to shock formation, we developed a mixing-length model in which the typical length scale is related to the average radial distance between shocks. Furthermore, since the numerical simulations show that linear drive is necessary in order to sustain turbulence, we used the growth rate of the most unstable mode to estimate the typical timescale. The mixing-length model that was obtained agrees well with numerical simulations. The model gives an analytic expression for the turbulent viscosity as a function of the Toomre parameter and cooling time. It predicts that relevant values of α = 10−3 can be obtained in disks that have a Toomre parameter as high as Q ≈ 10. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. Spatial distribution and growth of dust in a clumpy protoplanetary disk subject to vigorous gravitational instability and fragmentation is studied numerically with sub-au resolution using the FEOSAD code. Methods. Hydrodynamics equations describing the evolution of self-gravitating and viscous protoplanetary disks in the thin-disk limit were modified to include a dust component consisting of two parts: sub-micron-sized dust and grown dust with a variable maximum radius. The conversion of small to grown dust, dust growth, friction of dust with gas, and dust self-gravity were also considered. Results. We found that the disk appearance is notably time-variable with spiral arms, dusty rings, and clumps, constantly forming, evolving, and decaying. As a consequence, the total dust-to-gas mass ratio is highly non-homogeneous throughout the disk extent, showing order-of-magnitude local deviations from the canonical 1:100 value. Gravitationally bound clumps formed through gravitational fragmentation have a velocity pattern that deviates notably from the Keplerian rotation. Small dust is efficiently converted into grown dust in the clump interiors, reaching a maximum radius of several decimeters. Concurrently, grown dust drifts towards the clump center forming a massive compact central condensation (70–100 M⊕). We argue that protoplanets may form in the interiors of inward-migrating clumps before they disperse through the action of tidal torques. We foresee the formation of protoplanets at orbital distances of several tens of au with initial masses of gas and dust in the protoplanetary seed in the (0.25–1.6) MJup and (1.0–5.5) M⊕ limits, respectively. The final masses of gas and dust in the protoplanets may however be much higher due to accretion from surrounding massive metal-rich disks/envelopes. Conclusions. Dusty rings formed through tidal dispersal of inward-migrating clumps may have a connection to ring-like structures found in youngest and massive protoplanetary disks. Numerical disk models with a dust component that can follow the evolution of gravitationally bound clumps through their collapse phase to the formation of protoplanets are needed to make firm conclusions on the characteristics of planets forming through gravitational fragmentation. Context. The formation process of high-mass stars (>8 M⊙) is poorly constrained, particularly the effects of clump fragmentation creating multiple systems and the mechanism of mass accretion onto the cores. Aims. We study the fragmentation of dense gas clumps, and trace the circumstellar rotation and outflows by analyzing observations of the high-mass (~500 M⊙) star-forming region IRAS 23033+5951. Methods. Using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in three configurations and the IRAM 30 m single-dish telescope at 220 GHz, we probe the gas and dust emission at an angular resolution of ~0.45′′, corresponding to 1900 au. Results. In the millimeter (mm) continuum emission, we identify a protostellar cluster with at least four mm-sources, where three of them show a significantly higher peak intensity well above a signal-to-noise ratio of 100. Hierarchical fragmentation from large to small spatial scales is discussed. Two fragments are embedded in rotating structures and drive molecular outflows, traced by 13CO (2–1) emission. The velocity profiles across two of the cores are similar to Keplerian but are missing the highest-velocity components close to the center of rotation, which is a common phenomena from observations like these, and other rotation scenarios are not excluded entirely. Position–velocity diagrams suggest protostellar masses of ~6 and 19 M⊙. Rotational temperatures from fitting CH3CN (12K− 11K) spectra are used for estimating the gas temperature and thereby also the disk stability against gravitational fragmentation, utilizing Toomre's Q parameter. Assuming that the candidate disk is in Keplerian rotation about the central stellar object and considering different disk inclination angles, we identify only one candidate disk as being unstable against gravitational instability caused by axisymmetric perturbations. Conclusions. The dominant sources cover different evolutionary stages within the same maternal gas clump. Aims. The central region of a circumstellar disk is difficult to resolve in global numerical simulations of collapsing cloud cores, but its effect on the evolution of the entire disk can be significant. Methods. We used numerical hydrodynamics simulations to model the long-term evolution of self-gravitating and viscous circumstellar disks in the thin-disk limit. Simulations start from the gravitational collapse of pre-stellar cores of 0.5–1.0 M⊙ and both gaseous and dusty subsystems were considered, including a model for dust growth. The inner unresolved 1.0 au of the disk is replaced with a central smart cell (CSC), a simplified model that simulates physical processes that may occur in this region. Results. We found that the mass transport rate through the CSC has an appreciable effect on the evolution of the entire disk. Models with slow mass transport form more massive and warmer disks, and are more susceptible to gravitational instability and fragmentation, including a newly identified episodic mode of disk fragmentation in the T Tauri phase of disk evolution. Models with slow mass transport through the CSC feature episodic accretion and luminosity bursts in the early evolution, while models with fast transport are characterized by a steadily declining accretion rate with low-amplitude flickering. Dust grows to a larger, decimeter size in the slow transport models and efficiently drifts in the CSC, where it accumulates and reaches the limit where a streaming instability becomes operational. We argue that gravitational instability, together with a streaming instability likely operating in the inner disk regions, constitute two concurrent planet-forming mechanisms, which may explain the observed diversity of exoplanetary orbits. Conclusions. We conclude that sophisticated models of the inner unresolved disk regions should be used when modeling the formation and evolution of gaseous and dusty protoplanetary disks. Context. Recent observations suggest a scenario in which filamentary structures in the interstellar medium represent the first step towards clumps/cores and eventually star formation. The densest filaments would then fragment into prestellar cores owing to gravitational instability. Aims. We seek to understand the roles filamentary structures play in high-mass star formation. Methods. We mapped the integral-shaped filament (ISF) located at the northern end of the Orion A molecular cloud in NH3 (1, 1) and (2, 2). The observations were made using the 25 m radio telescope operated by the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The whole filamentary structure, about 1.2° × 0.6°, is uniformly and fully sampled. We investigate the morphology, fragmentation, kinematics, and temperature properties in this region. Results. We find that the morphology revealed by the map of velocity-integrated intensity of the NH3 (1, 1) line is closely associated with the dust ridge revealed by the Herschel Space Observatory. We identify 6 "lumps" related to the well known OMC-1 to 5 and 11 "sub-clumps" within the map. The clumps and sub-clumps are separated not randomly but in roughly equal intervals along the ISF. The average spacing of clumps is 11.30′ ± 1.31′ (1.36 ± 0.16 pc) and the average spacing of sub-clumps is 7.18′ ± 1.19′ (0.86 ± 0.14 pc). These spacings agree well with the predicted values of the thermal (0.86 pc) and turbulent sausage instability (1.43 pc) by adopting a cylindric geometry of the ISF with an inclination of 60° with respect to the line of sight. We also find a velocity gradient of about 0.6 km s-1 pc-1 that runs along the ISF which likely arises from an overall rotation of the Orion A molecular cloud. The inferred ratio between rotational and gravitational energy is well below unity. Furthermore, fluctuations are seen in the centroid velocity diagram along the ISF. The OMC-1 to 5 clouds are located close to the local extrema of the fluctuations, which suggests that there exist gas flows associated with these clumps in the ISF. The derived NH3 (1, 1) and (2, 2) rotation temperatures in the OMC-1 are about 30-40 K while lower temperatures (below 20 K) are obtained in the northern and southern parts of the ISF. Context. Comet formation by gravitational instability requires aggregates that trigger the streaming instability and cluster in pebbleclouds. These aggregates form as mixtures of dust and ice from (sub-)micrometre-sized dust and ice grains via coagulation in the solar nebula. Aims. We investigate the growth of aggregates from (sub-)micrometre-sized dust and ice monomer grains. We are interested in the properties of these aggregates: whether they might trigger the streaming instability, how they compare to pebbles found on comets and what the implications are for comet formation in collapsing pebble-clouds. Methods. We used Monte Carlo simulations to study the growth of aggregates through coagulation locally in the comet-forming region at 30 au. We used a collision model that can accommodate sticking, bouncing, fragmentation and porosity of dust- and icemixed aggregates. We compared our results to measurements of pebbles on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Results. We find that aggregate growth becomes limited by radial drift towards the Sun for 1 μm sized monomers and by bouncing collisions for 0:1 μm sized monomers before the aggregates reach a Stokes number that would trigger the streaming instability (Stmin). We argue that in a bouncing-dominated system, aggregates can reach Stmin through compression in bouncing collisions if compression is faster than radial drift. In the comet-forming region (∼30 au), aggregates with Stmin have volume-filling factors of ∼10-2 and radii of a few millimetres. These sizes are comparable to the sizes of pebbles found on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The porosity of the aggregates formed in the solar nebula would imply that comets formed in pebble-clouds with masses equivalent to planetesimals of the order of 100 km in diameter. Protoplanetary disks often appear as multiple concentric rings in dust continuum emission maps and scattered light images. These features are often associated with possible young planets in these disks. Many non-planetary explanations have also been suggested, including snow lines, dead zones and secular gravitational instabilities in the dust. In this paper we suggest another potential origin. The presence of copious amounts of dust tends to strongly reduce the conductivity of the gas, thereby inhibiting the magneto-rotational instability, and thus reducing the turbulence in the disk. From viscous disk theory it is known that a disk tends to increase its surface density in regions where the viscosity (i.e. turbulence) is low. Local maxima in the gas pressure tend to attract dust through radial drift, increasing the dust content even more. We have investigated mathematically if this could potentially lead to a feedback loop in which a perturbation in the dust surface density could perturb the gas surface density, leading to increased dust drift and thus amplification of the dust perturbation and, as a consequence, the gas perturbation. We find that this is indeed possible, even for moderately small dust grain sizes, which drift less efficiently, but which are more likely to affect the gas ionization degree. We speculate that this instability could be triggered by the small dust population initially, and when the local pressure maxima are strong enough, the larger dust grains get trapped and lead to the familiar ring-like shapes. Aims: The aim of this work is to constrain properties of the disk around the archetype FU Orionis object, FU Ori, with as good as ~25 au resolution. Methods. We resolved FU Ori at 29-37 GHz using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in the A-array configuration, which provided the highest possible angular resolution to date at this frequency band (~007). We also performed complementary JVLA 8-10 GHz observations, Submillimeter Array (SMA) 224 GHz and 272 GHz observations, and compared these with archival Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) 346 GHz observations to obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Results: Our 8-10 GHz observations do not find evidence for the presence of thermal radio jets, and constrain the radio jet/wind flux to at least 90 times lower than the expected value from the previously reported bolometric luminosity-radio luminosity correlation. The emission at frequencies higher than 29 GHz may be dominated by the two spatially unresolved sources, which are located immediately around FU Ori and its companion FU Ori S, respectively. Their deconvolved radii at 33 GHz are only a few au, which is two orders of magnitude smaller in linear scale than the gaseous disk revealed by the previous Subaru-HiCIAO 1.6 µm coronagraphic polarization imaging observations. We are struck by the fact that these two spatially compact sources contribute to over 50% of the observed fluxes at 224 GHz, 272 GHz, and 346 GHz. The 8-346 GHz SEDs of FU Ori and FU Ori S cannot be fit by constant spectral indices (over frequency), although we cannot rule out that it is due to the time variability of their (sub)millimeter fluxes. Conclusions: The more sophisticated models for SEDs considering the details of the observed spectral indices in the millimeter bands suggest that the >29 GHz emission is contributed by a combination of free-free emission from ionized gas and thermal emission from optically thick and optically thin dust components. We hypothesize that dust in the innermost parts of the disks (≤0.1 au) has been sublimated, and thus the disks are no longer well shielded against the ionizing photons. The estimated overall gas and dust mass based on SED modeling, can be as high as a fraction of a solar mass, which is adequate for developing disk gravitational instability. Our present explanation for the observational data is that the massive inflow of gas and dust due to disk gravitational instability or interaction with a companion/intruder, was piled up at the few-au scale due to the development of a deadzone with negligible ionization. The piled up material subsequently triggered the thermal instability and the magnetorotational instability when the ionization fraction in the inner sub-au scale region exceeded a threshold value, leading to the high protostellar accretion rate. Context. Recent studies have shown that close-in brown dwarfs in the mass range 35-55 MJup are almost depleted as companions to stars, suggesting that objects with masses above and below this gap might have different formation mechanisms. Aims. We aim to test whether stars harbouring massive brown dwarfs and stars with low-mass brown dwarfs show any chemical peculiarity that could be related to different formation processes. Methods. Our methodology is based on the analysis of high-resolution échelle spectra (R ~ 57 000) from 2-3 m class telescopes. We determine the fundamental stellar parameters, as well as individual abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Zn for a large sample of stars known to have a substellar companion in the brown dwarf regime. The sample is divided into stars hosting massive and low-mass brown dwarfs. Following previous works, a threshold of 42.5 MJup was considered. The metallicity and abundance trends of the two subsamples are compared and set in the context of current models of planetary and brown dwarf formation. Results. Our results confirm that stars with brown dwarf companions do not follow the well-established gas-giant planet metallicity correlation seen in main-sequence planet hosts. Stars harbouring massive brown dwarfs show similar metallicity and abundance distribution as stars without known planets or with low-mass planets. We find a tendency of stars harbouring less-massive brown dwarfs of having slightly higher metallicity, [XFe/Fe] values, and abundances of Sc ii, Mn i, and Ni i than the stars having the massive brown dwarfs. The data suggest, as previously reported, that massive and low-mass brown dwarfs might present differences in period and eccentricity. Conclusions. We find evidence of a non-metallicity dependent mechanism for the formation of massive brown dwarfs. Our results agree with a scenario in which massive brown dwarfs are formed as stars. At high metallicities, the core-accretion mechanism might become effcient in the formation of low-mass brown dwarfs, while at lower metallicities low-mass brown dwarfs could form by gravitational instability in turbulent protostellar discs. The astonishing diversity in the observed planetary population requires theoretical efforts and advances in planet formation theories. The use of numerical approaches provides a method to tackle the weaknesses of current models and is an important tool to close gaps in poorly constrained areas such as the rapid formation of giant planets in highly evolved systems. So far, most numerical approaches make use of Lagrangian-based smoothed-particle hydrodynamics techniques or grid-based 2D axisymmetric simulations. We present a new global disk setup to model the first stages of giant planet formation via gravitational instabilities (GI) in 3D with the blockstructured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code enzo. With this setup, we explore the potential impact of AMR techniques on the fragmentation and clumping due to large-scale instabilities using different AMR configurations. Additionally, we seek to derive general resolution criteria for global simulations of self-gravitating disks of variable extent. We run a grid of simulations with varying AMR settings, including runs with a static grid for comparison. Additionally, we study the effects of varying the disk radius. The physical settings involve disks with Rdisk = 10; 100 and 300 AU, with a mass of Mdisk ≈ 0:05 M☉ and a central object of subsolar mass (M* = 0:646 M☉). To validate our thermodynamical approach we include a set of simulations with a dynamically stable profile (Qinit = 3) and similar grid parameters. The development of fragmentation and the buildup of distinct clumps in the disk is strongly dependent on the chosen AMR grid settings. By combining our findings from the resolution and parameter studies we find a general lower limit criterion to be able to resolve GI induced fragmentation features and distinct clumps, which induce turbulence in the disk and seed giant planet formation. Irrespective of the physical extension of the disk, topologically disconnected clump features are only resolved if the fragmentation-active zone of the disk is resolved with at least 100 cells. The latter corresponds to a minimum requirement for all global disk setups. Our simulations illustrate the capabilities of AMR-based modeling techniques for planet formation simulations and underline the importance of balanced refinement settings to reproduce fragmenting structures. The clumps in our models are migrating inward and are eventually destroyed because of tidal disruptions, reflecting the absence of radiative feedback from the central star, which may stabilize the clumps on larger scales. We expect that the inclusion of additional physics, like a radiation transport mechanism and the formation of sink particles, will provide a detailed framework to study the formation of planets via gravitational instabilities in a global disk view. Aims. We present a study of star formation in the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy through the association of three star formation indicators: 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers, 22 GHz H2O masers, and enhanced 4.5 μm emission ('green') sources. We explore how star formation in the CMZ (∣⨏∣ < 1.3°, ∣b∣ < 10') compares with that of the Galactic disk (6 °> ⨏ > 345°, ∣b∣ < 2°). Methods. Using an automated algorithm, we search for green sources toward 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers detected in the Parkes Methanol Multibeam Survey. We combine these results with lists of 22 GHz H2O masers, including our Mopra survey of the CMZ. Results. We find that the correlation of CH3OH masers with green sources is a function of Galactic latitude, with a minimum close to b = 0 and increasing with ∣b∣ (toward the central part of the Galaxy, 6 °> ⨏ > 345°, ∣b∣ < 2°).We find no significant difference between the correlation rate of CH3OH masers with green sources in the CMZ and the disk. This suggests that although the physical conditions of the gas are different in the CMZ from that of the Galactic disk, once gravitational instability sets in at sufficiently high densities, signatures of star formation appear to be similar in both regions. Moreover, the detection of green sources, even at the distance of the Galactic center, shows that our technique can easily identify the early stages of star formation, especially in lowextinction regions of the Galaxy. Through the association of H2O and CH3OH masers, we identify 15 star-forming sites in the CMZ. We find a higher correlation rate of coincident H2O and CH3OH masers within the CMZ compared to the Galactic disk, indicating a difference in the maser evolutionary sequence for star-forming cores in these two regions. Context. The intrinsic luminosity of young Jupiters is of high interest for planet formation theory. It is an observable quantity that is determined by important physical mechanisms during formation, namely, the structure of the accretion shock and, even more fundamentally, the basic formation mechanism (core accretion or gravitational instability). Aims. Our aim is to study the impact of the core mass on the post-formation entropy and luminosity of young giant planets forming via core accretion with a supercritical accretion shock that radiates all accretion shock energy (cold accretion). Methods. For this, we conduct self-consistently coupled formation and evolution calculations of giant planets with masses between 1 and 12 Jovian masses and core masses between 20 and 120 Earth masses in the 1D spherically symmetric approximation. Results. As the main result, it is found that the post-formation luminosity of massive giant planets is very sensitive to the core mass. An increase in the core mass by a factor 6 results in an increase in the post-formation luminosity of a 10-Jovian mass planet by a factor 120, indicating a dependency as M2-3 core. Due to this dependency, there is no single well-defined post-formation luminosity for core accretion, but a wide range, even for completely cold accretion. For massive cores (~100 Earth masses), the post-formation luminosities of core accretion planets become so high that they approach those in the hot start scenario that is often associated with gravitational instability. For the mechanism to work, it is necessary that the solids are accreted before or during gas runaway accretion and that they sink during this time deep into the planet. Conclusions. We make no claims about whether such massive cores can actually form in giant planets especially at large orbital distances. But if they can form, it becomes difficult to rule out core accretion as the formation mechanism based solely on luminosity for directly imaged planets that are more luminous than predicted for low core masses. Instead of invoking gravitational instability as the consequently necessary formation mode, the high luminosity can also be caused, at least in principle, simply by a more massive core. 13CO(J = 2-1) and C18O(J = 2-1) observations of the molecular cloud G285.90+4.53 (Cloud 16) in the Carina Flare supershell (GSH287+04-17) with the APEX telescope are presented. With an algorithm DENDROFIND we identify 51 fragments and compute their sizes and masses. We discuss their mass spectrum and interpret it as being the result of the shell fragmentation process described by the pressure assisted gravitational instability - PAGI. Context. High-contrast imaging is a powerful technique when searching for gas giant planets and brown dwarfs orbiting at separations greater than several AU. Around solar-type stars, giant planets are expected to form by core accretion or by gravitational instability, but since core accretion is increasingly difficult as the primary star becomes lighter, gravitational instability would be a probable formation scenario for still-to-find distant giant planets around a low-mass star. A systematic survey for such planets around Mdwarfs would therefore provide a direct test of the efficiency of gravitational instability. Aims. We search for gas giant planets orbiting late-type stars and brown dwarfs of the solar neighbourhood. Methods. We obtained deep high-resolution images of 16 targets with the adaptive optic system of VLT-NACO in the L' band, using direct imaging and angular differential imaging. This is currently the largest and deepest survey for Jupiter-mass planets around M-dwarfs. We developed and used an integrated reduction and analysis pipeline to reduce the images and derive our 2D detection limits for each target. The typical contrast achieved is about 9 mag at 0.5" and 11 mag beyond 1" . For each target we also determine the probability of detecting a planet of a given mass at a given separation in our images. Results. We derived accurate detection probabilities for planetary companions, taking orbital projection effects into account, with in average more than 50% probability to detect a 3 MJup companion at 10AU and a 1.5 MJup companion at 20AU, bringing strong constraints on the existence of Jupiter-mass planets around this sample of young M-dwarfs. Young galaxies are clumpy, gas-rich, and highly turbulent. Star formation appears to occur by gravitational instabilities in galactic disks. The high dispersion makes the clumps massive and the disks thick. The star formation rate should be comparable to the gas accretion rate of the whole galaxy, because star formation is usually rapid and the gas would be depleted quickly otherwise. The empirical laws for star formation found locally hold at redshifts around 2, although the molecular gas consumption time appears to be smaller, and mergers appear to form stars with a slightly higher efficiency than the majority of disk galaxies. The origin and types of spiral arms are reviewed with an emphasis on the connections between these arms and star formation. Flocculent spiral arms are most likely the result of transient instabilities in the gas that promote dense cloud formation, star formation, and generate turbulence. Long irregular spiral arms are usually initiated by gravitational instabilities in the stars, with the gas contributing to and following these instabilities, and star formation in the gas. Global spiral arms triggered by global perturbations, such as a galaxy interaction, can be wavemodes with wave reflection in the inner regions. They might grow and dominate the disk for several rotations before degenerating into higher-order modes by non-linear effects. Interstellar gas flows through these global arms, and through the more transient stellar spiral arms as well, where it can reach a high density and low shear, thereby promoting self-gravitational instabilities. The result is the formation of giant spiral arm cloud complexes, in which dense molecular clouds form and turn into stars. The molecular envelops and debris from these clouds appear to survive and drift through the interarm regions for a long time, possibly 100 Myr or more, with lingering spontaneous star formation and triggered star formation in the pieces that are still at high-pressure edges near older HII regions. The resolution criterion for self-gravity in AMR codes derived by Truelove et al. (1997) based on the Jeans length is a very robust one and thus quite popular. We believe that for some configurations, such as self-gravitating discs, there are reasons to supplement it in order to properly resolve gravitational instabilities and clump formation processes at reasonable computational costs. We review models of protoplanetary disks. In the earlier stages of evolution, disks are subject to gravitational instabilities that redistribute mass and angular momentum on short timescales. Later on, when the mass of the disk is below ten percent or so of that of the central star, accretion occurs through the magnetorotational instability. The parts of the disks that are not ionized enough to couple to the magnetic field may not accrete or accrete inefficiently. We also review theories of planet migration. Tidal interaction between a disk and an embedded planet leads to angular momentum exchange between the planetary orbital motion and the disk rotation. This results in low mass planets migrating with respect to the gas in the disk, while massive planets open up a gap in the vicinity of their orbit and migrate in as the disk is accreted.
