We present the peculiar case of PSZ2G091.83+26.11 at z=0.822. This cluster hosts a Mpc-scale radio halo and an elongated radio source, whose location with the respect to the intracluster medium (ICM) distribution and to the cluster centre is not consistent with a simple merger scenario. We use VLA data at 1-4 GHz to investigate the spectral and polarisation properties of the diffuse radio emission. We combine them with previously published data from LOFAR n the 120-168 MHz band, and from the uGMRT at 250-500 and 550-900 MHz. We also complement the radio data with Chandra X-ray observations to compare the thermal and non-thermal emission of the cluster. The elongated radio emission is visible up to 3.0 GHz and has an integrated spectral index of $-1.24\pm0.03$, with a steepening from $-0.89\pm0.03$ to $-1.39\pm0.03$. These values correspond to Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,int}=3.0\pm0.19$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,inj}=2.48\pm0.15$. Chandra data reveals a surface brightness discontinuity at the location of the radio source, with a compression factor of $\mathcal{C}=2.22^{+0.39}_{-0.30}$ (i.e. $\mathcal{M}_{\rm Xray}=1.93^{+0.42}_{-0.32}$). We also find that the source is polarised at GHz frequencies. We estimate an intrinsic polarisation fraction of $\sim0.2$, a Rotation Measure of $\sim50~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$ (including the Galactic contribution) and an external depolarisation of $\sim60~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$. The $B$-vectors are aligned with the major axis of the source, suggesting magnetic field compression. Hence, we classify this source as a radio relic. We also find a linear/super-linear correlation between the non-thermal and thermal emission. We propose an off-axis merger and/or multiple merger events to explain the position and orientation of the relic. Measurements of the growth rate of structures at $z < 0.1$ with peculiar velocity surveys have the potential of testing the validity of general relativity on cosmic scales. In this work, we present growth-rate measurements from realistic simulated sets of type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). We describe our simulation methodology, the light-curve fitting and peculiar velocity estimation. Using the maximum likelihood method, we derive constraints on $f\sigma_8$ using only ZTF SN Ia peculiar velocities. We carefully tested the method and we quantified biases due to selection effects (photometric detection, spectroscopic follow-up for typing) on several independent realizations. We simulated the equivalent of 6 years of ZTF data, and considering an unbiased spectroscopically typed sample at $z < 0.06$, we obtained unbiased estimates of $f\sigma_8$ with an average uncertainty of 19% precision. In order to test active galactic nucleus (AGN) unification and evolutionary models, we measured the AGN clustering properties as a function of AGN obscuration defined in terms of hydrogen column density, $N_{\rm H}$. In addition to measuring the clustering of unobscured ($N_{\rm H} < 10^{22}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) and moderately obscured ($10^{22} \leq N_{\rm H} < 10^{23.5}$) AGNs, we also targeted highly obscured sources ($N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{23.5}$) up to redshifts of $z=3$. We have compiled one of the largest samples of X-ray-selected AGNs from a total of eight deep XMM/Chandra surveys. We measured the clustering as a function of both AGN obscuration and redshift using the projected two-point correlation function, $w_{\rm p}(r_{\rm p})$. We modeled the large-scale clustering signal, measured the AGN bias, $b(z, N_{\rm H})$, and interpreted it in terms of the typical AGN host dark matter halo, $M_{\rm halo}(z, N_{\rm H}$). We find no significant dependence of AGN clustering on obscuration, suggesting similar typical masses of the hosting halos as a function of $N_{\rm H}$. This result matches expectations of AGN unification models, in which AGN obscuration depends mainly on the viewing angle of the obscuring torus. We measured, for the first time, the clustering of highly obscured AGNs and find that these objects reside in halos with typical mass $\log M_{\rm halo} = 12.98_{-0.22}^{+0.17} [h^{-1} M_\odot]$ ($12.28_{-0.19}^{+0.13}$) at low $z \sim 0.7$ (high $z \sim 1.8$) redshifts. We find that irrespective of obscuration, an increase in AGN bias with redshift is slower than the expectation for a constant halo mass and instead follows the growth rate of halos, known as the passive evolution track. We analysed the 3D clustering of the Planck sample of Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) selected galaxy clusters, focusing on the redshift-space two-point correlation function (2PCF). We compared our measurements to theoretical predictions of the standard $\Lambda$ cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological model, deriving an estimate of the Planck mass bias, $b_{\mathrm SZ}$, and cosmological parameters. We measured the 2PCF of the sample in the cluster-centric radial range $r\in[10,150]$ $h^{-1}$Mpc, considering 920 galaxy clusters with redshift $z\leq0.8$. A Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis has been performed to constrain $b_{\mathrm SZ}$, assuming priors on cosmological parameters from Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) results. We also adopted priors on $b_{\mathrm SZ}$ from external data sets to constrain the cosmological parameters $\Omega_{\mathrm m}$ and $\sigma_8$. We obtained $(1-b_{\mathrm SZ})=0.62^{+0.14}_{-0.11}$, which is in agreement with the value required to reconcile primary CMB and cluster count observations. By adopting priors on $(1-b_{\mathrm SZ})$ from external data sets, we derived results on $\Omega_{\mathrm m}$ that are fully in agreement and competitive, in terms of uncertainties, with those derived from cluster counts. This confirms the importance of including clustering in cosmological studies, in order to fully exploit the information from galaxy cluster statistics. We present a probabilistic cross-correlation approach to estimate time delays in the context of reverberation mapping (RM) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We reformulate the traditional interpolated cross-correlation method as a statistically principled model that delivers a posterior distribution for the delay. The method employs Gaussian processes as a model for observed AGN light curves. We describe the mathematical formalism and demonstrate the new approach using both simulated light curves and available RM observations. The proposed method delivers a posterior distribution for the delay that accounts for observational noise and the non-uniform sampling of the light curves. This feature allow us to fully quantify its uncertainty and propagate it to subsequent calculations of dependent physical quantities, e.g., black hole masses. It delivers out-of-sample predictions, which enables us to subject it to model selection and it can calculate the joint posterior delay for more than two light curves. Because of the numerous advantages of our reformulation and the simplicity of its application, we anticipate that our method will find favour not only in the specialised community of RM, but in all fields where cross-correlation analysis is performed. Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) can self-annihilate, thus providing us with a way to indirectly detect dark matter (DM). Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are excellent places to search for annihilation signals because they are rich in DM and background emission is low. If magnetic fields in dSph galaxies exist, the particles produced in DM annihilation emit synchrotron radiation. We used the non-detection of 150 MHz radio continuum emission from dSph galaxies with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to derive constraints on the annihilation cross section of WIMPs in electron-positron pairs. Our main underlying assumption is that the transport of the cosmic rays can be described by the diffusion approximation, which necessitates the existence of magnetic fields. We used observations of six dSph galaxies in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). The data were reimaged and radial profiles were generated. We also used stacking to increase the sensitivity. In order to derive upper limits on the WIMP cross section, we injected fake Gaussian sources into the data, which were then detected with 2$\sigma$ significance in the radial profile. These sources represent the lowest emission we would have been able to detect. We present limits from the observations of individual galaxies as well as from stacking. We explored the uncertainty due to the choice of diffusion and magnetic field parameters by constructing three different model scenarios: optimistic (OPT), intermediate (INT), and pessimistic (PES). Assuming monochromatic annihilation into electron-positron pairs, the limits from the INT scenario exclude thermal WIMPs below 20 GeV, and the limits from the OPT scenario even exclude thermal WIMPs below 70 GeV. The INT limits can compete with limits set by Fermi-LAT using $\gamma$-ray observations of multiple dwarf galaxies, and they are especially strong for low WIMP masses., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Gaia DR3 publishes a catalogue of full-sky RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) observed during the initial 34 months of science operations, that were processed through the Specific Object Study (SOS) pipeline for Cepheids and RRLs (SOS Cep&RRL) observed by Gaia. The SOS Cep&RRL validation of DR3 candidate RRLs relies on tools that include the Period (P) G-amplitude diagram and the P-phi21 and -phi31 parameters of the G light curve Fourier decomposition, based on a sample of bona fide known RRLs (Gold Sample). The SOS processing led to a catalogue of 271779 RRLs listed in the vari_rrlyrae table of DR3. By dropping sources that clearly are contaminants, or have an uncertain classification we produce the final catalogue of SOS-confirmed DR3 RRLs containing 270905 sources (174947 fundamental mode, 93952 first overtone and 2006 double-mode RRLs) confirmed and fully characterised by the SOS Cep&RRL pipeline. They are distributed all over the sky, including 95 globular clusters and 25 Milky Way companions. RVS time series radial velocities are also published for 1096 RRLs and 799 Cepheids. Of the 270905 DR3 RRLs, 200294 are already known in the literature and 70611 are, to the best of our knowledge, new discoveries by Gaia. An estimate of the interstellar absorption is published for 142660 fundamental-mode RRLs from a relation based on the G-band amplitude and the pulsation period. Metallicities derived from the Periods and the phi31 Fourier parameters of the G-light curves are also released for 133559 RRLs. The final Gaia DR3 catalogue of confirmed RRLs almost doubles the DR2 RRLs catalogue. An increase of statistical significance, a better characterization of the RRLs pulsational and astrophysical parameters, and the improved astrometry published with Gaia EDR3, make the SOS Cep&RRL DR3 sample, the largest, most homogeneous and parameter-rich catalogue of All-Sky RRLs published so far., 42 pages, 36 figures, submitted to A&A, revised version after the referee report

NGC 4414 is a nearby galaxy included in the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project to measure its distance using Cepheid variables. It hosts two sibling SNe Ia: SN 2021J and SN 1974G. This provides the opportunity to improve the precision of the previous estimate of H0, which was based solely on SN 1974G. Here we present new optical BVRI photometry obtained at the Observatorio de Sierra Nevada and complement it with Swift UVOT UBV data, which cover the first 70 days of emission of SN 2021J. A first look at SN 2021J optical spectra obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) reveals typical SN type Ia features. The main SN luminosity parameters for the two sibling SNe are obtained by using SNooPy, a light curve fitting code based on templates. Using a hierarchical bayesian approach, we build the Hubble diagram with a sample of 96 SNe Ia obtained from the Combined Pantheon Sample in the redshift range z = 0.02 − 0.075, and calibrate the zero point with the two sibling type-Ia SNe in NGC 4414. We report a value of the Hubble constant H0 = 72.19 ± 2.32 (stat.) ±3.42 (syst.) km s−1 Mpc−1. We expect a reduction of the systematic error after a new analysis of the Cepheids period-luminosity relation using the upcoming Gaia DR4 and additional Cepheids from the HST and JWST. © E. We present cosmological parameter constraints as estimated using the Bayesian BeyondPlanck (BP) analysis framework. This method supports seamless end-to-end error propagation from raw time-ordered data to final cosmological parameters. As a first demonstration of the method, we analyze time-ordered Planck LFI observations, combined with selected external data (WMAP 33-61GHz, Planck HFI DR4 353 and 857GHz, and Haslam 408MHz) in the form of pixelized maps which are used to break critical astrophysical degeneracies. Overall, all results are generally in good agreement with previously reported values from Planck 2018 and WMAP, with the largest relative difference for any parameter of about 1 sigma when considering only temperature multipoles between 29, Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Context. The characteristics of the polarised radio sky are a key ingredient in constraining evolutionary models of magnetic fields in the Universe and their role in feedback processes. The origin of the polarised emission and the characteristics of the intergalactic medium on the line of sight can be investigated using large samples of polarised sources. Ancillary infrared (IR) and optical data can be used to study the nature of the emitting objects. Aims. We analyse five early science datasets from the APERture Tile in Focus (Apertif) phased array feed system to verify the polarisation capabilities of Apertif in view of future larger data releases. We aim to characterise the source population of the polarised sky in the L-Band using polarised source information in combination with IR and optical data. Methods. We use automatic routines to generate full field-of-view Q- and U-cubes and perform rotation measure (RM)-Synthesis, source finding, and cross-matching with published radio, optical, and IR data to generate polarised source catalogues. All sources were inspected individually by eye for verification of their IR and optical counterparts. Spectral energy distribution (SED)-fitting routines were used to determine photometric redshifts, star-formation rates, and galaxy masses. IR colour information was used to classify sources as active galactic nuclei (AGN) or star-forming-dominated and early- or late-type. Results. We surveyed an area of 56 deg2 and detected 1357 polarised source components in 1170 sources. The fraction of polarised sources is 10.57% with a median fractional polarisation of 4.70 ± 0.14%. We confirmed the reliability of the Apertif measurements by comparing them with polarised cross-identified NVSS sources. Average RMs of the individual fields lie within the error of the best Milky Way foreground measurements. All of our polarised sources were found to be dominated by AGN activity in the radio regime with most of them being radio-loud (79%) and of the Fanaroff-Riley (FR)II class (87%). The host galaxies of our polarised source sample are dominated by intermediate disc and star-forming disc galaxies. The contribution of star formation to the radio emission is on the order of a few percent for ≈10% of the polarised sources while for ≈90% it is completely dominated by the AGN. We do not see any change in fractional polarisation for different star-formation rates of the AGN host galaxies. Conclusions. The Apertif system is suitable for large-area high-sensitivity polarised sky surveys. The data products of the polarisation analysis pipeline can be used to investigate the Milky Way magnetic field on projected scales of several arcminutes as well as the origin of the polarised emission in AGN and the properties of their host galaxies. © ESO 2022., This research made use of Montage. The detection of the 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is challenging due to bright foreground sources, radio frequency interference (RFI), the ionosphere, and instrumental effects. Even after correcting for these effects in the calibration step and applying foreground removal techniques, the remaining residuals in the observed 21 cm power spectra are still above the thermal noise, which is referred to as the "excess variance." We study potential causes of this excess variance based on 13 nights of data obtained with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). We focused on the impact of gain errors, the sky model, and ionospheric effects on the excess variance by correlating the relevant parameters such as the gain variance over time or frequency, local sidereal time (LST), diffractive scale, and phase structure-function slope with the level of excess variance. Our analysis shows that excess variance has an LST dependence, which is related to the power from the sky. And the simulated Stokes I power spectra from bright sources and the excess variance show a similar progression over LST with the minimum power appearing at LST bin 6h to 9h. This LST dependence is also present in sky images of the residual Stokes I of the observations. In very-wide sky images, we demonstrate that the extra power comes exactly from the direction of bright and distant sources Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A with the array beam patterns. These results suggest that the level of excess variance in the 21 cm signal power spectra is related to sky effects and, hence, it depends on LST. In particular, very bright and distant sources such as Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A can dominate the effect. Dynamical motions in the ICM can imprint distinctive features on X-ray images that map the thermal emission from galaxy clusters, such as sharp surface brightness discontinuities due to shocks and cold fronts. The gas dynamics during cluster mergers may also drive large-scale turbulence in the ICM, which in turn generates extended synchrontron sources known as radio halos. Surface brightness edges have been found numerous times in the thermal gas of clusters based on X-ray observations. In contrast, edges in radio halos have only been observed in a handful of cases. Our goal is to search for new radio surface brightness discontinuities in the ICM. We inspected the images of the Bullet Cluster and the other 25 radio halos reported in the MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey. To aid the identification of surface brightness discontinuities, we applied a gradient-filtering edge-detection method to the radio images. We find that the adopted filtering technique is helpful in identifying surface brightness edges in radio images, allowing us to identify at least one gradient in half of the radio halos studied. For the Bullet Cluster, we find excellent agreement between the locations of the 4 radio discontinuities detected and the X-ray edges. This similarity informs us that there is substantial interplay between thermal and nonthermal components in galaxy clusters. This interplay is likely due to the frozen-in ICM magnetic field, which mediates the advection of cosmic rays while being dragged by thermal gas flows. We conclude that radio halos are shaped by dynamical motions in the ICM and that they often display surface brightness discontinuities, which appear to be co-located with edges in the thermal gas emission. Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Recent work has suggested that black holes (BHs) could be cosmologically coupled to the accelerated expansion of the universe, potentially becoming a candidate for dark energy. This would imply BH mass growth following the cosmological expansion, with the masses of individual BHs growing as $M_{\rm BH}\propto (1+z)^3$. In this letter, we discuss the binary systems Gaia BH1 and Gaia BH2, which contain $\sim 9\,M_{\odot}$ BHs orbited by $\sim 1\,M_{\odot}$ stars in widely-separated orbits. The ages of both systems can be constrained by the properties of the luminous stars. If BH masses are indeed growing as $(1+z)^3$, the masses of both BHs at formation would have been significantly smaller than today. We find a 77% probability that the mass of the BH in Gaia BH2 would have been below $2.2M_\odot$ at formation. This is below the classical Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov limit, though it is not yet clear if BHs subject to cosmological coupling should obey this limit. For Gaia BH1, the same probability is 70%. This analysis is consistent with results from two BHs in the globular cluster NGC3201, but unlike the NGC3201 BHs, the Gaia BHs have well-constrained inclinations and thus firm upper mass limits. Recently multiscale imaging approaches such as DoG-HiT were developed to solve the VLBI imaging problem and showed a promising performance: they are fast, accurate, unbiased and automatic. We extend the multiscalar imaging approach to polarimetric imaging, reconstructions of dynamically evolving sources and finally to dynamic polarimetric reconstructions. These extensions (mr-support imaging) utilize a multiscalar approach. The time-averaged Stokes I image is decomposed by a wavelet transform into single subbands. We use the set of statistically significant wavelet coefficients, the multiresolution support, computed by DoG-HiT as a prior in a constrained minimization manner: we fit the single-frame (polarimetric) observables by only varying the coefficients in the multiresolution support. The EHT is a VLBI array imaging supermassive black holes. We demonstrate on synthetic data that mr-support imaging offers ample regularization and is able to recover simple geometric dynamics at the horizon scale in a typical EHT setup. The approach is relatively lightweight, fast and largely automatic and data driven. The ngEHT is a planned extension of the EHT designed to recover movies at the event horizon scales of a supermassive black hole. We benchmark the performance of mr-support imaging for the denser ngEHT configuration demonstrating the major improvements the additional ngEHT antennas will bring to dynamic, polarimetric reconstructions. Current and upcoming instruments offer the observational possibility to do polarimetric imaging of dynamically evolving structural patterns with highest spatial and temporal resolution. State-of-the-art dynamic reconstruction methods can capture this motion with a range of temporal regularizers and priors. A substantial fraction of the cosmic baryons is expected to hide in the form of diffuse warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), the majority of which resides in the filaments of the Cosmic Web and has proven very difficult to detect due to its low density. Close to galaxy clusters, the filament gas is affected by the cluster's gravitational potential and attains substantial infall velocities, eventually undergoing a termination shock which may boost its X-ray signal. We aim to identify the optimal locations of the enhanced X-ray emission and absorption arising from cluster-filament interactions, as well as improve our understanding of the various physical processes affecting the WHIM as it approaches the cluster. We applied the DisPerSE filament finder to the galaxy distribution in the surroundings of a Coma-like ($M_{200} \sim 10^{15.4}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$) simulated C-EAGLE galaxy cluster. We characterised the thermodynamic properties of the gas in such filaments as well as their dependence on distance from the cluster, and provided a physical interpretation for the results. The identified filaments account for $\sim 50$% of the hot WHIM ($T > 10^{5.5}$ K) in the cluster vicinity. The filament gas is in approximate free-fall all the way down to $\sim 2 \ r_{200}$ from the cluster, at which stage it begins to slow down due to the increasing pressure of the ambient gas. The deceleration is accompanied by the conversion of gas bulk kinetic energy into heat and the increase of density and temperature from the general Cosmic Web level of $\rho \sim 10\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^5-10^6$ K towards $\rho \sim 100\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^7-10^8$ K near the cluster boundary. The stellar mass ($M_\star$) and the star-formation rate (SFR) are among the most important features that characterize galaxies. Measuring these fundamental properties accurately is critical for understanding the present state of galaxies, and their history. This work explores the dependence of the IR emission of galaxies on their extinction, and the age of their stellar populations (SPs). It aims at providing accurate IR SFR and $M_\star$ calibrations that account for SP age and extinction while quantifying their scatter. We use the CIGALE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code to create models of galaxies with a wide range of star-formation histories, dust content, and interstellar medium properties. We fit the relations between $M_\star$ and SFR with IR and optical photometry of the model-galaxy SEDs with the MCMC method, and perform a machine-learning random forest analysis on the same data set in order to validate the latter. This work provides calibrations for the SFR using a combination of the WISE bands 1 and 3, or the JWST F200W and F2100W bands. It also provides mass-to-light ratio calibrations based on the WISE band-1, or the JWST band F200W, along with the optical $u-r$ or $g-r$ colors. These calibrations account for the biases attributed to the SP age, while they are given in the form of extinction-dependent and extinction-independent relations. They show robust estimations while minimizing the scatter and biases throughout a wide range of SFRs and stellar masses. The SFR calibration offers better results, especially in dust-free or passive galaxies where the contributions of old SPs or biases from the lack of dust are significant. Similarly, the $M_\star$ calibration yields significantly better results for dusty/high-SFR galaxies where dust emission can otherwise bias the estimations., 18 pages, 10 figures. The change of physical conditions across the turbulent and magnetized interstellar medium (ISM) induces a 3D spatial variation of the properties of Galactic polarized emission. The observed signal results from the averaging of different spectral energy distributions (SED) and polarization angles, along and between lines of sight. As a consequence, the total Stokes parameters $Q$ and $U$ will have different distorted SEDs, so that the polarization angle becomes frequency dependent. In the present work, we show how this phenomenon similarly induces a different distorted SED for the three polarized angular power spectra $EE$, $BB$ and $EB$, implying a variation of the $EE/BB$ ratio with frequency. We demonstrate how the previously introduced spin-moment formalism provides a natural framework to grasp these effects, allowing us to derive analytical predictions for the spectral behaviors of the polarized spectra, focusing here on the example of thermal dust polarized emission. After a quantitative discussion based on a model combining emission from a filament with its background, we further reveal that the spectral complexity implemented in the dust models commonly used by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) community produce such effects. This new understanding is crucial for CMB component separation, in which an extreme accuracy is required in the modeling of the dust signal to allow for the search of the primordial imprints of inflation or cosmic birefringence. For the latter, as long as the dust $EB$ signal is not measured accurately, great caution is required about the assumptions made to model its spectral behavior, as it may not simply follow from the other dust angular power spectra., Published in A&A

We present a first application to photometric galaxy clustering and weak lensing of wavelet-based multi-scale (beyond two points) summary statistics: starlet peak counts and starletl1-norm. Peak counts are the local maxima in the map, andl1-norm is computed via the sum of the absolute values of the starlet (wavelet) decomposition coefficients of a map, providing a fast multi-scale calculation of the pixel distribution, encoding the information of all pixels in the map. We employ the cosmo-SLICS simulations sources and lens catalogues, and we compute wavelet-based non-Gaussian statistics in the context of combined probes and their potential when applied to the weak-lensing convergence maps and galaxy maps. We obtain forecasts on the matter density parameter Ωm, the reduced Hubble constant h, the matter fluctuation amplitude σ8, and the dark energy equation of state parameter w0. In our setting for this first application, we consider the two probes to be independent. We find that the starlet peaks and thel1-norm represent interesting summary statistics that can improve the constraints with respect to the power spectrum, even in the case of photometric galaxy clustering and when the two probes are combined., Astronomy & Astrophysics, 672, ISSN:0004-6361, ISSN:1432-0746

Context. Abell 1213, a low-richness galaxy system, is known to host an anomalous radio halo detected in data of the VLA. It is an outlier with regard to the relation between the radio halo power and the X-ray luminosity of the parent clusters. Aims. Our aim is to analyze the cluster in the optical, X-ray, and radio bands to characterize the environment of its diffuse radio emission and to shed new light on its nature. Methods. We used optical data from the SDSS to study the internal dynamics of the cluster. We also analyzed archival XMM-Newton X-ray data to unveil the properties of its hot intracluster medium. Finally, we used recent data from LOFAR at 144 MHz, together with VLA data at 1.4 GHz, to study the spectral behavior of the diffuse radio source. Results. Both our optical and X-ray analysis reveal that this low-mass cluster exhibits disturbed dynamics. In fact, it is composed of several galaxy groups in the peripheral regions and, in particular, in the core, where we find evidence of substructures oriented in the NE-SW direction, with hints of a merger nearly along the line of sight. The analysis of the X-ray emission adds further evidence that the cluster is in an unrelaxed dynamical state. At radio wavelengths, the LOFAR data show that the diffuse emission is ~510 kpc in size. Moreover, there are hints of low-surface-brightness emission permeating the cluster center. Conclusions. The environment of the diffuse radio emission is not what we would expect for a classical halo. The spectral index map of the radio source is compatible with a relic interpretation, possibly due to a merger in the N-S or NE-SW directions, in agreement with the substructures detected through the optical analysis. The fragmented, diffuse radio emissions at the cluster center could be attributed to the surface brightness peaks of a faint central radio halo., 14 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables. Third-order weak lensing statistics are a promising tool for cosmological analyses since they extract cosmological information in the non-Gaussianity of the cosmic large-scale structure. However, such analyses require precise and accurate models for the covariance. In this second paper of a series on third-order weak lensing statistics, we derive and validate an analytic model for the covariance of the third-order aperture statistics $\langle M_\mathrm{ap}^3\rangle$. We derive the covariance model from a real-space estimator for $\langle M_\mathrm{ap}^3\rangle$. We validate the model by comparing it to estimates from simulated Gaussian random fields (GRF) and two sets of N-body simulations. Finally, we perform mock cosmological analyses with the model covariance and the simulation estimate to compare the resulting parameter constraints. We find good agreement between the model and the simulations, both for the GRF and the $N$-body simulations. The figure-of-merit in the $S_8$-$\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ plane from our covariance model is within 3\% of the one obtained from the simulated covariances. We also show that our model, which is based on an estimator using convergence maps, can be used to obtain upper and lower bounds for the covariance of an estimator based on three-point shear correlation functions. This second estimator is required for realistic survey data. In our derivation, we find that the $\langle M_\mathrm{ap}^3\rangle$ covariance cannot be obtained from the bispectrum covariance and that it includes several `finite-field terms' that do not scale with the inverse survey area. Our covariance model is sufficiently accurate for analysing stage III surveys. Covariances for statistics in Fourier space cannot always be straightforwardly converted into covariance for real-space statistics. The measurement of the $21$ cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn is a major goal for several existing and upcoming radio interferometers such as NenuFAR and the SKA. During this era before the beginning of the Epoch of Reionization, the signal is more difficult to observe due to brighter foregrounds but reveals additional information on the underlying astrophysical processes encoded in the spatial fluctuations of the spin temperature of hydrogen. To interpret future measurements, controlling the level of accuracy of the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux modelling is mandatory. In this work, we evaluate the impact of various approximations that exist in the main fast modelling approach compared to the results of a costly full radiative transfer simulation. The fast SPINTER code, presented in this work, computes the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux including the effect of wing scatterings for an inhomogeneous emissivity field, but assuming an otherwise homogeneous expanding universe. The LICORICE code computes the full radiative transfer in the Lyman-$\alpha$ line without any substantial approximation. We find that the difference between homogeneous and inhomogeneous gas density and temperature is very small for the computed flux. On the contrary, neglecting the effect of gas velocities produces a significant change in the computed flux. We identify the causes (mainly Doppler shifts due to velocity gradients) and quantify the magnitude of the effect in both an idealised setup and a realistic cosmological situation. We find that the amplitude of the effect, up to a factor of $\sim 2$ on the $21$ cm signal power spectrum on some scales (depending on both other model parameters and the redshift), can be easily discriminated with an SKA-like survey and already be approached, particularly for exotic signals, by the ongoing NenuFAR Cosmic Dawn Key Science Program., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. Previous studies reported an alignment of the major axes of radio galaxies on various angular scales. Here, we study the alignment of radio galaxies in the ELAIS-N1 Low Frequency ARray (LOFAR) deep field, which covers an area of 25 $\rm deg^2$. \newline Methods. The low noise level of about 20$ \rm ~ \mu Jy/beam$ of the LOFAR deep field observations at 150 MHz enabled the identification of 447 extended ($> 30 \rm ''$) radio galaxies for which we have measured the major axis position angle. We found that 95\% of these sources have either photometric or spectroscopic redshifts, which we then used for a three-dimensional analysis. \newline Results. We show the distribution of the position angles of radio galaxies in the ELAIS-N1 field and perform multiple statistical tests to check whether the radio galaxies are randomly oriented. We found that the distribution of position angles is consistent with being uniform. Two peaks around position angles of 50 and 140$\rm~ deg$ are spurious and are not caused by an alignment, as shown by a 3D analysis. In the next decade, radio telescopes like the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will explore the Universe at high redshift, and particularly during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR). The first structures emerged during this epoch, and their radiations have reionised the previously cold and neutral gas of the Universe creating ionised bubbles that percolate at the end of the EoR (at a redshift of approximately 6). SKA will produce 2D images of the distribution of the neutral gas at many redshifts, pushing us to develop tools and simulations to understand its properties. This paper aims at measuring topological statistics of the EoR in the "reionisation times" fields from both cosmological and semi-analytical simulations. This field informs us about the time of reionisation of the gas at each position, is used to probe the inhomogeneities of reionisation histories and can possibly be extracted from 21 cm maps. We also compare these measurements with analytical predictions from the gaussian random field (GRF) theory. The GRF theory allows us to compute many statistics of a field: PDFs of the field or its gradient, isocontour length, critical point distributions, and skeleton length. We compare these theoretical predictions to measurements made on reionisation time fields extracted from an EMMA and a 21cmFAST simulations at 1 a cMpc/h resolution. We also compared our results to GRFs generated from the fitted power spectra of the simulation maps. Both EMMA and 21cmFAST reionisation time fields (treion(r)) are close to be gaussian fields, in contrast with the 21 cm, density or ionisation fraction that are all proven to be non-gaussian. Only accelerating ionisation fronts at the end of the EoR seem to be a cause of small non-gaussianities in treion(r). Overall our results indicate that an analytical description of the reionisation percolation can be reasonably made within the framework of GRF theory., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, 3 tables. In self-gravitating $N$-body systems, small perturbations introduced at the start, or infinitesimal errors that are produced by the numerical integrator or are due to limited precision in the computer, grow exponentially with time. For Newton's gravity, we confirm earlier results that for relatively homogeneous systems, this rate of growth per crossing time increases with $N$ up to $N \sim 30$, but that for larger systems, the growth rate has a weaker scaling with $N$. For concentrated systems, however, the rate of exponential growth continues to scale with $N$. In relativistic self-gravitating systems, the rate of growth is almost independent of $N$. This effect, however, is only noticeable when the system's mean velocity approaches the speed of light to within three orders of magnitude. The chaotic behavior of systems with more than a dozen bodies for the usually adopted approximation of only solving the pairwise interactions in the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equation of motion is qualitatively different than when the interaction terms (or cross terms) are taken into account. This result provides a strong motivation for follow-up studies on the microscopic effect of general relativity on orbital chaos, and on the influence of higher-order cross-terms in the Taylor-series expansion of the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equations of motion., A&A in press

3C186 is a powerful radio loud quasar (QSO) at the center of a cool-core cluster at z=1.06. Previous studies reported evidence for a projected spatial offset of ~1'' between the isophotal center of the galaxy and the point-source QSO as well as a spectral shift of ~2000 km/s between the narrow and broad line region of the system. In this work we report high-resolution molecular gas CO(4-3) observations of the system taken with NOEMA interferometer. We clearly detect a large reservoir of molecular gas, $M_{H_2}\sim8\times10^{10}~M_\odot$, that is cospatial with the host galaxy and likely associated with a rotating disk-like structure. We firmly confirm both the spatial offset of the galaxy's gas reservoir with respect to the continuum emission of the QSO and the spectral offset with respect to the redshift of the broad line region. Our morphological and kinematical analysis confirms that the most likely scenario to explain the 3C186 system is that the QSO is a kicked super-massive black hole (SMBH), which we believe may have resulted from a strong gravitational wave recoil as two SMBHs coalesced after the merger of their host galaxies., 9 pages, Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters in press

The first JWST data on the massive colliding cluster El Gordo confirm 23 known families of multiply lensed images and identify 8 new members of these families. Based on these families, which have been confirmed spectroscopically by MUSE, we derived an initial lens model. This model guided the identification of 37 additional families of multiply lensed galaxies, among which 28 are entirely new systems, and 9 were previously known. The initial lens model determined geometric redshifts for the 37 new systems. The geometric redshifts agree reasonably well with spectroscopic or photometric redshifts when those are available. The geometric redshifts enable two additional models that include all 60 families of multiply lensed galaxies spanning a redshift range $20.8$ and has an estimated virial mass close the maximum mass allowed by standard cosmological models. The JWST images also reveal the presence of small-mass perturbers that produce small lensing distortions. The smallest of these is consistent with being a dwarf galaxy at $z=0.87$ and has an estimated mass of $3.8\times10^9$~\Msol, making it the smallest substructure found at $z>0.5$. The JWST images also show several candidate caustic-crossing events. One of them is detected at high significance at the expected position of the critical curve and is likely a red supergiant star at $z=2.1878$. This would be the first red supergiant found at cosmological distances. The cluster lensing should magnify background objects at $z>6$, making more of them visible than in blank fields of similar size, but there appears to be a deficiency of such objects., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures

Large galaxy cluster surveys rely on scaling laws that relate cluster observables to their masses. From the high-resolution observations of ∼45 galaxy clusters with the NIKA2 and XMM-Newton instruments, the NIKA2 Sunyaev-Zela'dovich Large Program should provide an accurate scaling relation between the thermal Sunyaev-Zela'dovich effect and the hydrostatic mass. In this paper we present an exhaustive analysis of the hydrostatic mass of the well-known galaxy cluster CL J1226.9+3332, the highest-redshift cluster in the NIKA2 Sunyaev-Zela'dovich Large Program at z=0.89. We combined the NIKA2 observations with thermal Sunyaev-Zela'dovich data from the NIKA, Bolocam, and MUSTANG instruments and XMM-Newton X-ray observations, and tested the impact of the systematic effects on the mass reconstruction. We conclude that slight differences in the shape of the mass profile can be crucial when defining the integrated mass at R500, which demonstrates the importance of the modelling in the mass determination. We prove the robustness of our hydrostatic mass estimates by showing the agreement with all the results found in the literature. Another key factor for cosmology is the bias of the masses estimated assuming the hydrostatic equilibrium hypothesis. Based on the lensing convergence maps from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) data, we obtain the lensing mass estimate for CL J1226.9+3332. From this we are able to measure the hydrostatic-To-lensing mass bias for this cluster, which spans from 1-bHSE/lens∼0.7 to 1, presenting the impact of data sets and mass reconstruction models on the bias

Modeling of strong gravitational lenses is a necessity for further applications in astrophysics and cosmology. Especially with the large number of detections in current and upcoming surveys such as the Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), it is timely to investigate in automated and fast analysis techniques beyond the traditional and time consuming Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling methods. Building upon our convolutional neural network (CNN) presented in Schuldt et al. (2021b), we present here another CNN, specifically a residual neural network (ResNet), that predicts the five mass parameters of a Singular Isothermal Ellipsoid (SIE) profile (lens center $x$ and $y$, ellipticity $e_x$ and $e_y$, Einstein radius $\theta_E$) and the external shear ($\gamma_{ext,1}$, $\gamma_{ext,2}$) from ground-based imaging data. In contrast to our CNN, this ResNet further predicts a 1$\sigma$ uncertainty for each parameter. To train our network, we use our improved pipeline from Schuldt et al. (2021b) to simulate lens images using real images of galaxies from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey (HSC) and from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field as lens galaxies and background sources, respectively. We find overall very good recoveries for the SIE parameters, while differences remain in predicting the external shear. From our tests, most likely the low image resolution is the limiting factor for predicting the external shear. Given the run time of milli-seconds per system, our network is perfectly suited to predict the next appearing image and time delays of lensed transients in time. Therefore, we also present the performance of the network on these quantities in comparison to our simulations. Our ResNet is able to predict the SIE and shear parameter values in fractions of a second on a single CPU such that we are able to process efficiently the huge amount of expected galaxy-scale lenses in the near future., Comment: 17 pages, including 11 figures, published with A&A

The characterization of the dynamical state of clusters is key to study their evolution, their selection, and use them as a cosmological probe. The offsets between different definitions of the center have been used to estimate the cluster disturbance. Our goal is to study the distribution of the offset between the X-ray and optical centers in clusters of galaxies. We study the offset for eROSITA clusters. We aim to connect observations to hydrodynamical simulations and N-body models. We assess the astrophysical effects affecting the displacements. We measure the offset for clusters observed in eFEDS and eRASS1. We focus on a subsample of 87 massive eFEDS clusters at low redshift. We link the observations to the offset parameter Xoff measured on dark matter halos in N-body simulations, using the hydrodynamical simulations as a bridge. eFEDS clusters show a smaller offset compared to eRASS1, because the latter contains a larger fraction of massive and disturbed structures. We measure an average offset of 76.3+30.1-27.1 kpc on the subsample of 87 eFEDS clusters. This is in agreement with the predictions from TNG and Magneticum, and the distribution of Xoff from DMO simulations. The tails of the distributions are different. Using the offset to classify relaxed and disturbed clusters, we measure a relaxed fraction of 31% in the eFEDS subsample. Finally, we find a correlation between the offset in hydrodynamical simulations and Xoff measured on their parent DMO run and calibrate a relation between them. There is good agreement between eROSITA data and simulations. Baryons cause a decrement (increment) in the low (high) offset regime compared to the Xoff distribution. The offset-Xoff relation provides an accurate prediction of the true Xoff distribution in Magneticum and TNG. The Copernican principle, the notion that we are not at a special location in the Universe, is one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology and its violation would invalidate the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric, causing a major change in our understanding of the Universe. Thus, it is of fundamental importance to perform observational tests of this principle. We determine the precision with which future surveys will be able to test the Copernican principle and their ability to detect any possible violations. We forecast constraints on the inhomogeneous Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ ($\Lambda$LTB), basically a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, but endowed with a spherical inhomogeneity. We consider combinations of currently available data and simulated Euclid data, together with external data products, based on both $\Lambda$CDM and $\Lambda$LTB fiducial models. These constraints are compared to the expectations from the Copernican principle. When considering the $\Lambda$CDM fiducial model, we find that Euclid data, in combination with other current and forthcoming surveys, will improve the constraints on the Copernican principle by about $30\%$, with $\pm10\%$ variations depending on the observables and scales considered. On the other hand, when considering a $\Lambda$LTB fiducial model, we find that future Euclid data, combined with other current and forthcoming data sets, will be able to detect Gpc-scale inhomogeneities of contrast $-0.1$. Type IIn supernovae potentially constitute a large fraction of the gravitationally lensed supernovae predicted to be found with upcoming facilities. However, the local rate is used for these estimates, which is assumed to be independent of properties such as the host galaxy mass. Some studies hint that a host galaxy mass bias may exist for IIn supernovae. This paper aims to provide an updated local IIn supernova-to-core-collapse ratio based on data from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Bright Transient Survey (BTS). Furthermore, the goal is to investigate the dependency of the IIn supernova peak magnitude on the host galaxy mass and the consequences of a possible host galaxy mass preference on the volumetric rate of type IIn supernovae. We constructed approximately volume-limited subsamples to determine the local IIn supernova-to-core-collapse ratio. We investigated the absolute peak magnitude of a subsample of type IIn and superluminous II or IIn supernovae exploring how this relates to the i-band magnitude of the host galaxies (as a proxy for stellar mass). We presented a method to quantify the effect of a potential preference for low-mass host galaxies utilizing the UniverseMachine algorithm. The IIn supernova-to-core-collapse ratios for PTF and BTS are 0.046 +- 0.013 and 0.048 +- 0.011, respectively, which results in a ratio of 0.047 +- 0.009, which is consistent with the ratio of 0.05 currently used to estimate the number of gravitationally lensed IIn supernovae. We report fainter host galaxy median absolute magnitudes for type IIn brighter than -20.5 mag with a 3 sigma significance. If the IIn supernova-to-core-collapse ratio were described by the power law model $IIn/CC = 0.15 \cdot \log(M/M_{\odot})^{-0.05}$, we would expect a slightly elevated volumetric rate for redshifts beyond 3.2., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

In this work we address the issue of whether the division of clusters in cool cores (CCs) and non-cool cores (NCCs) is due to a primordial difference or to how clusters evolve across cosmic time. Our first goal is to establish if spectra from the central regions of a subclass of NCCs known as cool core remnants (CCRs) are consistent with having a small but significant amount of short cooling time gas, thereby allowing a transformation to CC systems on a timescale of a giga year. Our second goal is to determine if low ionization Fe lines emitted from this residual cool gas will be detectable by the calorimeters that will fly on board XRISM and ATHENA. We performed a spectral analysis of CCR systems with a multi temperature model and, assuming the different components to be in pressure equilibrium with one another, derived entropy and cooling time distributions for the X-ray emitting gas. We find that in most of our systems, the spectral model allows for a fraction of low entropy, short cooling time gas with a mass that is comparable to the one in CC systems. Moreover, simulations show that future spectrometers on board XRISM and ATHENA will have the power to directly resolve emission lines from the low temperature gas, thereby providing incontrovertible evidence for its presence. Within the scenario that we have explored, the constant fraction of CCs measured across cosmic time emerges from a dynamical equilibrium where CCs transformed in NCCs through mergers are balanced by NCCs that revert to CCs. SMACS~J0723.3-7327 is the first galaxy cluster lens observed by JWST. Based on the ERO data from JWST, several groups have reported the results on strong lensing analysis and mass distribution of this cluster. However, limited by the angular coverage of the JWST data, the strong lensing models only cover the central region. X-ray analysis on the hot ICM is necessary to obtain a more complete constraint on the mass distribution in this very massive cluster. In this work, we aim to perform a comprehensive X-ray analysis of J0723 to obtain accurate ICM hydrostatic mass measurements, using the X-ray data from SRG/eROSITA and Chandra X-ray observatories. By comparing the hydrostatic mass profile with the strong lensing model, we aim to provide the most reliable constraint on the distribution of mass up to R500. Thanks to the eROSITA all-sky survey and Chandra data, which provide high S/N and high angular resolution respectively, we are able to constrain the ICM gas density profile and temperature profile with good accuracy both in the core and to the outskirts. With the density and temperature profiles, we compute the hydrostatic mass profile, which is then projected along the line of sight to compare with the mass distribution obtained from the recent strong lensing analysis based on JWST data. We also deproject the strong lensing mass distribution using the hydrostatic mass profile we obtained in this work. The X-ray results obtained from eROSITA and Chandra agree very well with each other. The hydrostatic mass profiles we measured in this work, both projected and deprojected, are in good agreement with recent strong lensing results based on JWST data, at all radii. We also find that the radial acceleration relation in J0723 is inconsistent with the RAR for spiral galaxies, implying that the latter is not a universal property of gravity across all mass scales., Accepted for publication in A&A

In the self-similar scenario for galaxy cluster formation and evolution, the thermodynamic properties of the X-ray emitting plasma can be predicted in their dependencies on the halo mass and redshift only. However, several departures from this simple self-similar scenario have been observed. We show how our semi-analytic model $i(cm)z$, which modifies the self-similar predictions through two temperature-dependent quantities, the gas mass fraction $f_g=f_0 T^{f_1} E_z^{f_z}$ and the temperature variation $f_T=t_0 T^{t_1} E_z^{t_z}$, can be calibrated to incorporate the mass and redshift dependencies. We used a published set of 17 scaling relations to constrain the parameters of the model. We were subsequently able to make predictions as to the slope of any observed scaling relation within a few percent of the central value and about one $\sigma$ of the nominal error. Contextually, the evolution of these scaling laws was also determined, with predictions within $1.5 \sigma$ and within 10 percent of the observational constraints. Relying on this calibration, we have also evaluated the consistency of the predictions on the radial profiles with some observational datasets. For a sample of high-quality data (X-COP), we were able to constrain a further parameter of the model, the hydrostatic bias $b$. By calibrating the model, we have determined that (i) the slopes of the temperature dependence are $f_1=0.403 (\pm0.009)$ and $t_1=0.144 (\pm0.017)$; and that (ii) the dependence upon $E_z$ are constrained to be $f_z=-0.004 (\pm 0.023)$ and $t_z=0.349 (\pm 0.059)$. These values permit one to estimate directly how the normalizations of a given quantity $Q_{\Delta}$ changes as a function of the mass (or temperature) and redshift halo in the form $Q_{\Delta} \sim M^{a_M} E_z^{a_z} \sim T^{a_T} E_z^{a_{Tz}}$, in very good agreement with the current observational constraints., Comment: 15 pages; A&A in press. Traditional estimators of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum are sensitive to the survey geometry. They yield spectra that differ from the true underlying signal since they are convolved with the window function of the survey. For the current and future generations of experiments, this bias is statistically significant on large scales. It is thus imperative that the effect of the window function on the summary statistics of the galaxy distribution is accurately modelled. Moreover, this operation must be computationally efficient in order to allow sampling posterior probabilities while performing Bayesian estimation of the cosmological parameters. In order to satisfy these requirements, we built a deep neural network model that emulates the convolution with the window function, and we show that it provides fast and accurate predictions. We trained (tested) the network using a suite of 2000 (200) cosmological models within the cold dark matter scenario, and demonstrate that its performance is agnostic to the precise values of the cosmological parameters. In all cases, the deep neural network provides models for the power spectra and the bispectrum that are accurate to better than 0.1 per cent on a timescale of 10 $\mu$s., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. This paper introduces a new Planck Catalog of Polarized and Variable Compact Sources (PCCS-PV) comprising 153 sources, the majority of which are extragalactic. The data include both the total flux density and linear polarization measured by Planck with frequency coverage from 30 to 353 GHz, and temporal spacing ranging from days to years. We classify most sources as beamed, extragalactic radio sources; the catalog also includes several radio galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, and Galactic and Magellanic Cloud sources, including H IIi regions and planetary nebulae. An advanced extraction method applied directly to the multifrequency Planck time-ordered data, rather than the mission sky maps, was developed to allow an assessment of the variability of polarized sources. Our analysis of the time-ordered data from the Planck mission, tod2flux, allowed us to catalog the time-varying emission and polarization properties for these sources at the full range of polarized frequencies employed by Planck, 30 to 353 GHz. PCCS-PV provides the time- and frequency-dependent, polarized flux densities for all 153 sources. To illustrate some potential applications of the PCCS- PV, we conducted preliminary comparisons of our measurements of selected sources with published data from other astronomical instruments. In summary, we find general agreement between the Planck and the Institut de Radioastronomie Millim\'etrique (IRAM) polarization measurements as well as with the Mets\"ahovi 37 GHz values at closely similar epochs. These combined measurements also show the value of PCCS-PV results and the PCCS2 catalog for filling in missing spectral (or temporal) coverage and helping to define the spectral energy distributions of extragalactic sources. We investigate how different mid-infrared (mid-IR) properties of galaxies trace the environment in which the galaxies are located. For this purpose, we first study the dependence of galaxy clustering on the absolute magnitude at 3.4 $\mu$m and redshift. Then, we look into the environmental dependence of mid-IR luminosities and the galaxy properties derived from these luminosities. We also explore how various infrared galaxy luminosity selections influence the galaxy clustering measurements. We use a set of W1 (3.4 $\mu$m) absolute magnitude ($M_\text{W1}$) selected samples from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey matched with mid-IR properties from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) in the redshift range $0.07 \leq z < 0.43$. We compute the galaxy two-point correlation function (2pCF) and compare the clustering lengths between subsamples binned in $M_\text{W1}$ and in redshift. We also measure the marked correlation functions (MCFs) using the luminosities in the WISE W1 to W4 (3.4 to 22 $\mu$m) bands as marks. Additionally, we compare the measurements of MCFs with different estimates of stellar mass and star formation rate used as marks. Finally, we check how different selections applied to the sample affect the clustering measurements. We show strong clustering dependence on the W1 absolute magnitude: galaxies brighter in the W1 band are more strongly clustered than their fainter counterparts. We also observe a lack of significant redshift dependence of clustering in the redshift range $0.07 \leq z < 0.43$. We show that although W1 and W2 bands are direct indicators of stellar mass, a galaxy sample selected based on W1 or W2 bands does not perfectly show the clustering behaviour of a stellar mass selected sample. We present the results of a systematic X-ray analysis of optically rich galaxy clusters detected by the Subaru HSC survey in the eROSITA eFEDS field. Through a joint analysis of SRG/eROSITA and Subaru/HSC surveys, we aim to study the dynamical status of the optically selected clusters and derive the cluster scaling relations. We constrain polarized foreground emission between 30 and 70 GHz with the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and WMAP data within the global Bayesian BeyondPlanck framework. We combine for the first time full-resolution Planck LFI time-ordered data with low-resolution WMAP sky maps at 33, 40 and 61 GHz. Spectral parameters are fit with a likelihood defined at the native resolution of each frequency channel. This analysis represents the first implementation of true multi-resolution component separation applied to CMB observations for both amplitude and spectral energy distribution (SED) parameters. For synchrotron emission, we approximate the SED as a power-law in frequency and find that the low signal-to-noise ratio of the current data strongly limits the number of free parameters that may be robustly constrained. We partition the sky into four large disjoint regions (High Latitude; Galactic Spur; Galactic Plane; and Galactic Center), each associated with its own power-law index. We find that the High Latitude region is prior-dominated, while the Galactic Center region is contaminated by residual instrumental systematics. The two remaining regions appear to be signal-dominated, and for these we derive spectral indices of $\beta_{\mathrm s}^{\mathrm{Spur}}=-3.17\pm0.06$ and $\beta_{\mathrm s}^{\mathrm{Plane}}=-3.03\pm0.07$, in good agreement with previous results. For thermal dust emission we assume a modified blackbody model and we fit a single power-law index across the full sky. We find $\beta_{\mathrm{d}}=1.64\pm0.03$, which is slightly steeper than reported from Planck HFI data, but still statistically consistent at the 2$\sigma$ confidence level., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures. Submillimeter/millimeter observations of dusty star-forming galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have shown that dust continuum emission generally occurs in compact regions smaller than the stellar distribution. However, it remains to be understood how systematic these findings are. Studies often lack homogeneity in the sample selection, target discontinuous areas with inhomogeneous sensitivities, and suffer from modest $uv$ coverage coming from single array configurations. GOODS-ALMA is a 1.1mm galaxy survey over a continuous area of 72.42arcmin$^2$ at a homogeneous sensitivity. In this version 2.0, we present a new low resolution dataset and its combination with the previous high resolution dataset from the survey, improving the $uv$ coverage and sensitivity reaching an average of $��= 68.4��$Jy beam$^{-1}$. A total of 88 galaxies are detected in a blind search (compared to 35 in the high resolution dataset alone), 50% at $S/N_{peak} \geq 5$ and 50% at $3.5 \leq S/N_{peak} \leq 5$ aided by priors. Among them, 13 out of the 88 are optically dark or faint sources ($H$- or $K$-band dropouts). The sample dust continuum sizes at 1.1mm are generally compact, with a median effective radius of $R_{e} = 0"10 \pm 0"05$ (a physical size of $R_{e} = 0.73 \pm 0.29$kpc at the redshift of each source). Dust continuum sizes evolve with redshift and stellar mass resembling the trends of the stellar sizes measured at optical wavelengths, albeit a lower normalization compared to those of late-type galaxies. We conclude that for sources with flux densities $S_{1.1mm} > 1$mJy, compact dust continuum emission at 1.1mm prevails, and sizes as extended as typical star-forming stellar disks are rare. The $S_{1.1mm} < 1$mJy sources appear slightly more extended at 1.1mm, although they are still generally compact below the sizes of typical star-forming stellar disks., Accepted by A&A. 30 pages, 18 figures

Since the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe more than two decades ago, Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) have been extensively used as standardisable candles in the optical. However, SNe Ia have shown to be more homogeneous in the near-infrared (NIR), where the effect of dust extinction is also attenuated. In this work, we explore the possibility of using a low number of NIR observations for accurate distance estimations, given the homogeneity at these wavelengths. We found that one epoch in J and/or H band, plus good gr-band coverage, gives an accurate estimation of peak magnitudes in the J (Jmax) and H (Hmax) bands. The use of a single NIR epoch only introduces an additional scatter of ∼0.05 mag for epochs around the time of B-band peak magnitude (Tmax). We also tested the effect of optical cadence and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in the estimation of Tmax and its uncertainty propagation to the NIR peak magnitudes. Both cadence and S/N have a similar contribution, where we constrained the introduced scatter of each to < 0.02 mag in Jmax and < 0.01 in Hmax. However, these effects are expected to be negligible, provided the data quality is comparable to that obtained for observations of nearby SNe (z ≲ 0.1). The effect of S/N in the NIR was tested as well. We determine the proper motion of the Solar system from the Pantheon sample of supernovae (SNe) of type Ia. The posterior distribution of the Solar system proper velocity, its direction and relevant cosmological parameters are obtained based on the observed distance moduli, heliocentric redshifts, and positions of SNe by means of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. We account for the unknown peculiar motion of SNe by including their expected covariance from linear theory. We find that the Solar system moves with $v_o = 249 \pm 51$ km/s towards $RA = 166 \pm 16$ deg, $Dec = 10 \pm 19$ deg (J2000) (all at 68\% C.L.). The direction of motion agrees with the direction of the dipole observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) ($RA = 166$ deg, $Dec = -7$ deg). The inferred velocity is $2.4 \sigma$ smaller than the value inferred from a purely kinematic interpretation of the CMB dipole ($370$ km/s). Assuming a flat $\Lambda$ cold dark matter model, we find no degeneracy of Solar proper motion with other cosmological parameters. The dimensionless matter density is $\Omega_M = 0.305 \pm 0.022$, in excellent agreement with CMB measurements. We also find no degeneracy of the Solar proper motion with the SN calibration nuisance parameter. We conclude that a larger sample of SNe will allow an independent and robust test of the kinematic nature of the CMB dipole., Comment: 13 pages, 22 figures

We present a fast algorithm aimed at reproducing the light curves of distant stars undergoing microlensing near critical curves. The need for these type of algorithms has been motivated by recent observations of microlensing events of distant stars at high redshift and involving extreme magnification factors. The algorithm relies on a low-resolution computation of the deflection field due to an ensemble of microlenses near critical curves and takes advantage of the gradually varying nature of the deflection field to infer the magnification of the unresolved images. The algorithm is capable of resolving microlenses at cosmological distances with planet-sized masses, as well as typical background luminous stars of a few solar radii. Using this algorithm, light curves covering decades of relative motion between the source and the web of microcaustics, at nanoarcsec resolution, can be reproduced within a matter of minutes on a basic laptop. The combination and cross-correlation of the upcoming $Euclid$ data with cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements is a source of great expectation since it will provide the largest lever arm of epochs, ranging from recombination to structure formation across the entire past light cone. In this work, we present forecasts for the joint analysis of $Euclid$ and CMB data on the cosmological parameters of the standard cosmological model and some of its extensions. This work expands and complements the recently published forecasts based on $Euclid$-specific probes, namely galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and their cross-correlation. With some assumptions on the specifications of current and future CMB experiments, the predicted constraints are obtained from both a standard Fisher formalism and a posterior-fitting approach based on actual CMB data. Compared to a $Euclid$-only analysis, the addition of CMB data leads to a substantial impact on constraints for all cosmological parameters of the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter model, with improvements reaching up to a factor of ten. For the parameters of extended models, which include a redshift-dependent dark energy equation of state, non-zero curvature, and a phenomenological modification of gravity, improvements can be of the order of two to three, reaching higher than ten in some cases. We generate probabilistic predictions of the low-redshift ($z < 0.2$) synchrotron Cosmic Web for half of the Northern Sky. In particular, we predict the contribution to the specific intensity function at $\nu_\mathrm{obs} = 150\ \mathrm{MHz}$ from merger shocks in clusters and accretion shocks in filaments, both of which arise during large-scale structure formation. We assume a primordial magnetogenesis scenario, but our method is general enough to allow for an exploration of alternative magnetogenesis scenarios - and even alternative radiation mechanisms and spectral windows. In the future, by comparing different predictions, one could infer the most plausible physical model from a synchrotron Cosmic Web detection. Our method combines Bayesian large-scale structure reconstructions, snapshots of an MHD cosmological simulation, a Gaussian random field, and a ray tracing approach. The results help to select targets for deep observations and can be used in actual detection experiments. We highlight predictions for the Hercules Cluster, the Coma Cluster, Abell 2199, Abell 2255, the Lockman Hole and the Ursa Major Supercluster. At degree-scale resolution, the median specific intensity reaches $m_{I_\nu} \sim 10^{-1}\ \xi_e\ \mathrm{Jy\ deg^{-2}}$, where $\xi_e$ is the electron acceleration efficiency., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

An accurate covariance matrix is essential for obtaining reliable cosmological results when using a Gaussian likelihood. In this paper we study the covariance of pseudo-$C_\ell$ estimates of tomographic cosmic shear power spectra. Using two existing publicly available codes in combination, we calculate the full covariance matrix, including mode-coupling contributions arising from both partial sky coverage and non-linear structure growth. For three different sky masks, we compare the theoretical covariance matrix to that estimated from publicly available N-body weak lensing simulations, finding good agreement. We find that as a more extreme sky cut is applied, a corresponding increase in both Gaussian off-diagonal covariance and non-Gaussian super-sample covariance is observed in both theory and simulations, in accordance with expectations. Studying the different contributions to the covariance in detail, we find that the Gaussian covariance dominates along the main diagonal and the closest off-diagonals, but further away from the main diagonal the super-sample covariance is dominant. Forming mock constraints in parameters describing matter clustering and dark energy, we find that neglecting non-Gaussian contributions to the covariance can lead to underestimating the true size of confidence regions by up to 70 per cent. The dominant non-Gaussian covariance component is the super-sample covariance, but neglecting the smaller connected non-Gaussian covariance can still lead to the underestimation of uncertainties by 10--20 per cent. A real cosmological analysis will require marginalisation over many nuisance parameters, which will decrease the relative importance of all cosmological contributions to the covariance, so these values should be taken as upper limits on the importance of each component., 15 pages, 8 figures; matches version accepted by A&A; code available at https://github.com/robinupham/shear_pcl_cov

We present the first detailed analysis of the radio halo in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 using the LOFAR, uGMRT, and VLA. These observations combined with archival X-ray data allowed us to study the halo emission with unprecedented detail. The integrated radio emission from the entire halo is characterized by an ultra-steep spectrum, which can be described by a power law with $\alpha_{144 \rm MHz}^{1.5 \rm GHz}=-1.63\pm0.03$, and a radial steepening in the outer regions. The halo is significantly underluminous according to the scaling relations between radio power and mass at 1.4 GHz but not at 150 MHz; ultra-steep spectrum halos are predicted to be statistically underluminous. Despite the complex structure of this system, the radio halo morphology is remarkably similar to that of the X-ray emission. The radio surface brightness distribution across the halo is strongly correlated with the X-ray brightness of the intracluster medium. The derived correlations show sublinear slopes and there are distinct structures: the core is $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{1.51}$, the outermost region $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{0.41}$, and we find radio morphological connections with X-ray discontinuities. We also find a strong anti-correlation between the radio spectral index and the X-ray surface brightness, implying radial steepening. We suggests that the halo core is either related to old plasma from previous AGN activity, being advected, compressed and re-accelerated by mechanisms activated by the cold front or less turbulent with strong magnetic field in the core. Current best limits on the 21-cm signal during reionization are provided at large scales ($\gtrsim$100 Mpc). To model these scales, enormous simulation volumes are required which are computationally expensive. We find that the primary source of uncertainty at these large scales is sample variance, which decides the minimum size of simulations required to analyse current and upcoming observations. In large-scale structure simulations, the method of `fixing' the initial conditions (ICs) to exactly follow the initial power spectrum and `pairing' two simulations with exactly out-of-phase ICs has been shown to significantly reduce sample variance. Here we apply this `fixing and pairing' (F\&P) approach to reionization simulations whose clustering signal originates from both density fluctuations and reionization bubbles. Using a semi-numerical code, we show that with the traditional method, simulation boxes of $L\simeq 500$ (300) Mpc are required to model the large-scale clustering signal at $k$=0.1 Mpc$^{-1}$ with a precision of 5 (10) per cent. Using F\&P, the simulation boxes can be reduced by a factor of 2 to obtain the same precision level.
