- Abstract
Tumor cells' differential mechanisms to get energy can be diverse, as occurs in certain tumors of high biological aggressiveness, causing varying degrees of impairment in nutritional status. For the identification of malnutrition, physical, dietary, social, subjective, anthropometric, laboratory and clinical functional parameters can be applied, providing information that will enable a better assessment of nutritional status (NS). Currently researches are using the Phase Angle (PA°) and the Standardized Phase Angle (SPA) as nutritional indicators of NS and severity of the disease. However, there are few studies evaluating these parameters across different types of malignancy. This study compared the averages of PA° and SPA in lung (LC), head and neck (HNC) and colorectal cancer (CRC), crossing them with anthropometric parameters, tumor stage, and the Karnofsky Performance Status scale (KPS). The total sample comprised 276 patients, 20% (n=55) LC, 64% (n=177) HNC and 16 % (n=44) CRC. The highest percentage of severe weight loss was observed in the group of LC, followed by patients with CRC. The mean arm muscle circumference (F (2; 67), p = 0.017) and arm muscle area (F (2.59), p = 0.036) differ between men with different malignancies, as do the average resistance (p = 0.005) and reactance (F (2;214) p = 0.02). In women there was difference between the means of the AFP, (F (2; 56) p = 0.033) in different malignancies. Patients with HNC and CCR with KPS ≤ 70% had a lower average SPA (p = 0.016).
