Introduction: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (Dietmed) exerts protective effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) there are fewer studies that analyze these data., Objective: To determine adherence to Dietmed and dietary habits in patients with PAD, according to a history of CVD (coronary and/or cerebral ischaemic pathology) and according to the ankle-brachial index (ABI ≥ or <0,5)., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study carried out in a tertiary hospital. The sample was collected consecutively. Sociodemographic and clinical history, ankle-brachial index (ABI) and a 14-point Dietmed adherence dietary questionnaire were included. The analysis of categorical variables was carried out using the Pearson's Chi-Square test, the T-Student's statistic test for independent samples was used for parametric variables and the U. Mann-Whitney test for non-parametric variables., Results: Of the 97 patients, 87,6% had low adherence to Dietmed, with no differences according to the severity of PAD. However, when we analysed the data according to whether or not they had a history of CVD, we observed a high adherence to some items included in Dietmed, specifically, in the CVD group, the consumption of lean meat (95,5% vs 64%; P=.004). In addition, we observed a significant difference in the consumption in the group without a history of CVD (32% vs 9,1%; P=.033)., Conclusion: In our population, patients with PAD, regardless of the stage of the disease and whether they had associated coronary or cerebral ischaemic pathology, had low adherence to Dietmed. Therefore, it is important to implement nutritional education programmes in patients with PAD in all stages, as well as in those patients who have already suffered a vascular event, so that they maintain adherence to healthy dietary habits in the long term., (Copyright © 2024 Sociedad Española de Arteriosclerosis. Introduction: Chronic inflammation plays a considerable role in atherosclerosis and may occur simultaneously in different arteries. This condition is referred to as multisite arterial disease (MSAD). We aimed to investigate the association between inflammatory markers and MSAD., Methods: In this cross-sectional study we included 526 patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Patients with PAD were evaluated by conventional or computed tomography angiography for the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and those with at least 30% stenosis were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups: either MSAD+(PAD and CAD), Group 1) or MSAD- (only PAD without CAD, Group 2). Inflammatory markers were compared between the two groups., Results: Among all patients, 293 had MSAD while 233 had only PAD. The MSAD+group had higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-neutrophil ratio (PLR) (5.08±0.19, 4.67±0.51, and 207.1±6.23, 169.3±10.8, respectively, p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, HT [odds ratio (OR): 2.40 (1.61-3.59)); p<0.002], male gender [OR: 2.03 (1.29-3.17); p=0.002], DM [OR:1.56 (1.03-2.36); P=0.035], NLR [OR: 1,08 (1.02-1.16); p=0.021, and PLR [OR:1.05 (1.03-1.08); p<0.001] were found to be associated with MSAD., Conclusion: NLR and PLR are correlated with MSAD and may indicate the extent of atherosclerosis., (Copyright © 2020 Sociedad Española de Arteriosclerosis. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of an inter-arm blood pressure difference greater than 10mmHg in patients with type 2 diabetes, and the association of this measurement with the presence of a low ankle-brachial index and mortality at 5-year follow-up., Method: A validated blood pressure measurement protocol was used. The blood pressure was calculated for each arm to obtain mean systolic differences. Peripheral arterial disease was confirmed by an ankle-arm index less than 0.9. The medical history of the patient was reviewed in the computerized clinical notes after 5 years of follow-up., Results: The study included 139 patients with a mean age of 70.1 years (49% male), and a mean duration of diabetes mellitus of 10.8 years. A total of 50 (36%) patients had an inter-arm systolic blood pressure difference greater than 10mmHg. Patients with an inter-arm systolic blood pressure greater than 10mmHg had lower ankle-arm index (0.91±0.30 vs. 1.04±0.28, P=0.005), and higher mortality rates from all causes (48.0% vs. 28.9%; hazard ratio 1.64; 95% confidence interval: 1.06-2.53; P=0.03), compared with those with lower inter-arm systolic blood pressure difference., Conclusion: A high proportion of patients with type 2 diabetes have an elevated systolic blood pressure difference between arms. The development of cardiovascular disease appears in subjects with several cardiovascular risk factors. However, other agents could be related to the appearance of cardiovascular disease, like chemotherapy drugs. We present a 63 years-old man with very high cardiovascular risk and chronic myeloid leukemia under treatment with nilotinib. Despite a good control of cardiovascular risk factors, he development a severe and accelerated peripheral arterial disease. The objective of this study is to explore the longitudinal progression of atherosclerosis and the correlation between methods to measure the lesion in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice. Atherosclerosis progression was assessed by measurements of foam cell-rich depositions in their proximal aortas, and/or in surgically excised arteries, to assess the histological luminal narrowing. A longitudinal study was performed by comparing the values for carotid, aorta, and femoral and iliac arteries using common histological techniques. There were no significant differences in progression between different arteries, but correlation with the classical measurement of atherosclerosis in the aortic root was poor. Each laboratory requires specific standardization. Carotid arteries were sensitive to atherosclerosis in these mice, and progression was exponential. In conclusion, morphometric data show the importance of the choice of the duration of treatment, the appropriate controls, and the age at which to begin the experiments., (Copyright © 2015 Sociedad Española de Arteriosclerosis. Peripheral arterial disease is a common manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis that is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Objectives: To determine lipid serum levels, lipoproteins and other markers related to nephropathy and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in a type 2 diabetes population stratified according to their level of renal dysfunction., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 72 type 2 diabetic patients followed-up in outpatient clinics. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, mL/min) and albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR, mg/g) (eGFR > 60 and ACR < 30 [n = 23], eGFR > 60 and ACR > 30 [n = 12], eGFR30-60 [n = 23] and eGFR < 30 [n = 14]). Clinical and anthropometric characteristic of all patients were recorded. Fasting lipids and apolipoproteins, as well as renal and hematology parameters were measured. Finally, a multivariate Wald stepwise logistic regression statistic analysis was performed to determine variables independently associated with the presence of renal dysfunction., Results: The univariate statistical analysis showed that the higher renal dysfunction, the higher the prevalence of hypertension, smoking habit and triglycerides levels, and the lower hemoglobin levels (P < .05). The multivariate statistical analysis showed that only triglycerides levels (OR: 1.019, 95% CI: 1.004-1.034) and hemoglobin levels (OR: 0.516 95% CI: 0.292-0.914) were independently associated to the presence of renal dysfunction (eGFR < 60 mL/min.). The further inclusion of the presence of PAD in the statistical model did not modify those associations., Conclusion: The results confirm the relationship between triglycerides levels and diabetic nephropathy, independently of the presence of PAD., (Copyright © 2013 Sociedad Española de Arteriosclerosis.
