Due to the increase in the migratory phenomenon, many immigrants who do not know our language need legal assistance. Nationally, there are several instruments and laws that somehow include the right to translation and interpreting in the legal field, taking into account that the immigrant may need the presence of an interpreter as a defendant, but also as a victim. However, we find that the Spanish Criminal Procedure Act and the Spanish Law 4/2015 on the standing of victims of crime contain elements that do not guarantee equal conditions in relation to justice for those who do not share the language of the court. No se puede negar que el fenómeno migratorio se ha visto intensificado y, como consecuencia, muchos inmigrantes que desconocen nuestra lengua necesitan ser asistidos judicialmente. A nivel nacional son varios los instrumentos y leyes que de una u otra forma recogen el derecho a la traducción y a un intérprete en el entorno legal, teniendo en cuenta que el inmigrante puede necesitar la presencia de un intérprete como acusado, pero también como víctima. No obstante, nos encontramos con que la Ley de Enjuiciamiento Criminal y la Ley 4/2015 del Estatuto de la Víctima de delito cuentan en su articulado con elementos que no garantizan la igualdad de condiciones en las relaciones con la justicia de aquellas personas que no comparten el idioma del tribunal, y permiten que cualquiera lleve a cabo dicha labor de traducción e interpretación.

The humorous discourse is imbued with extralinguistic references, social and cultural factors, in addition to the already well known procedures and metalinguistic self-reference(s), hence its translation and interpretation with the same humorous load becomes complex. This is due to different linguistic complexities involved in its Construction, and the cultural powers conferred. On the basis of this approach, this paper aims to examine the universal and the particular in the transfer of joke(s) about women from one culture to another. For this goal we have selected a pair of seemingly different cultures (the Arabic and the Spanish ones), though they metaphorically belong to the Mediterranean culture. As a result of our research, we will try to figure out how women are depicted in the jokes from those cultures following several parameters: physique, intellect and morality. El discurso lúdico está impregnado de referencias extralingüísticas de índole social y cultural, amén de los ya consabidos procedimientos metalingüísticos y de autorreferencia, de ahí que una traducción o interpretación del mismo que mantenga la misma carga humorística resulte complicada. Esto se debe no solamente a las distintas complejidades lingüísticas implicadas en su construcción, sino también a las atribuciones culturales que se le confieren. No estamos hablando, por tanto, de la traducibilidad lingüística, sino de la cultural. Es decir, ¿son aceptables del mismo modo los chistes sobre la mujer a ambas orillas del Mediterráneo? Partiendo de este planteamiento, el presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar lo universal y lo particular en el trasvase del chiste sobre la mujer de una cultura a otra. Para ello, se han elegido un par de culturas aparentemente diferentes como son la árabe y la española, aunque metafóricamente se designe a ambas con el nombre de cultura mediterránea. Así, se intentará averiguar cómo se representa a la mujer en el chiste desde los siguientes parámetros: el físico, el intelectual y el moral.

El intérprete de conferencias debe llevar a cabo un trabajo documental antes, durante y después de los eventos en los que presta sus servicios, independientemente de su subcompetencia extralingüística. Desafortunadamente, pocas son las propuestas metodológicas que se hayan planteado para que este profesional pueda realizar esta tarea de manera sistemática. En el presente artículo, repasamos algunos de los trabajos que se han referido a las posibilidades que tiene el intérprete de satisfacer sus necesidades informativas. Una vez reseñada la mencionada escasez de propuestas, presentamos, en un estudio de caso, una aproximación metodológica a este trabajo de documentación, fundamentada en la compilación de corpus paralelos ad hoc y la extracción terminológica en forma de glosarios. The conference interpreter should carry out documentation work before, during and after the events in which he is providing his services, regardless of his extra-linguistic sub-competence. Unfortunately, few authors have discussed methodological proposals for this kind of work. The aim of this paper is to briefly review the interdisciplinary bibliography about the possibilities for the interpreter to fulfill his information needs. Furthermore, we aim to present a methodological approach to carry out this kind of work, based on the compilation of ad hoc parallel corpora, terminology extraction and glossaries.

The aim of this paper is to revisit the main techniques used by Pedro Simón Abril in his translation of Cicero’s Epistulae ad familiares (1589), the first version of this epistolary collection in Spain. By means of this analysis it can observed that these techniques of translation are the result not only of his skill and translating experience, but also that they respond to a prior work of theoretical reflection and an idea of translation as an essentially creative process. What is more, his adaptation to the literary taste of his readers explains certain peculiarities of the language and the style ofAbril’s translation.And precisely these artistic qualities are the key for the success and the survival of his translation along the last four centuries. En este artículo se examinan los principales recursos técnicos de los que se sirve el humanista Pedro Simón Abril en su traducción de las Epistulae ad familiares de Cicerón (1589), la primera versión completa de esta colección epistolar en España. A través del presente análisis se puede observar cómo estas técnicas de traducción no sólo son fruto de su habilidad y de su experiencia como traductor, sino que responden además a una labor previa de reflexión teórica y a una concepción de la traducción como un proceso esencialmente creativo. Esta necesidad de adaptarse al gusto literario del público lector explica algunas de las características de lengua y estilo de la versión de Simón Abril. Y será en estas cualidades artísticas en las que radique la clave de su éxito y su vigencia por espacio de más de cuatro siglos.

Este artículo presenta dos textos en árabe dialectal de Damasco (Siria) con su correspondiente análisis y traducción al español. Con ello se pretende reflejar algunas de las principales características del habla actual de los jóvenes damascenos. This paper contains two texts in the dialectal Arabic of Damascus (Syria), followed by an analysis and the Spanish translation thereof. The aim is to show the main characteristics of the modern language spoken amongst the young Damascenes.

This paper aims to identify, classify and analyze texts containing references to, quotations from, or translations of Victor Hugo’s work, published in El Salvador in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among the forty-six texts analyzed, there are eight references, nine quotations and twenty-nine translated poems and prose texts, which, once compared to their French originals, have helped us define the differences between both versions. El objetivo de este artículo es identificar, cuando no se especifica el título, clasificar y analizar los textos publicados a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX en El Salvador en los que hemos encontrado alusiones, traducciones o citas extraídas de obras de Victor Hugo. De los cuarenta y seis que suman en total, hay ocho referencias, nueve citas y veintinueve traducciones de poemas o de textos en prosa que hemos comparado con los originales, estableciendo las diferencias entre las dos versiones. The article deals with the Arabic translations from the Bible made after the arrival of Islam. The study is organized according to the three languages, Hebrew, Greek and Syriac, on which the translations are based, and according to the Samarian tradition. I enumerate the Arabic manuscripts that I have located in the various libraries. El artículo trata de la las versiones árabes de la Biblia hechas después de la llegada del Islam. Las traducciones árabes son estudiadas según las lenguas de origen, hebrea, griega, siríaca, que son la base de la lectura ahora vigente, y según la línea samaritana. Enumero los manuscritos árabes que he localizado en las distintas bibliotecas.

The orientalist paradigm has been, up to the present moment, the only pattern that western society has adopted for the reception of Islam. That determines the knowledge that the West has of the Islamic ideological reality and civilisation. Furthermore, it also determines the translation of the authoritative Islamic texts, particularly the case of the Koran. In this sense, what is assumed about the orientalist ideas may lead to the not translating of those texts but to their dis-translation. In the sense that the real meaning of those original texts might be sometimes modified by the translators’ own beliefs and their lucrubrations. This can be observed in many instances with the Koranic term amr (subject or command), in the context of a study with a strong orientalist approach. El paradigma orientalista ha sido, hasta el momento, la única fórmula que Occidente ha perfilado para la recepción del Islam. Ello condiciona el conocimiento que se tiene de su realidad ideológica y de civilización. Y también, por supuesto, la traducción de los textos autoritativos del Islam, en particular el Corán. En estas condiciones, la asunción de los presupuestos orientalistas puede llevar no a la traducción de dichos textos, sino a su des-traducción, en el sentido de sustituir el significado real de los textos originales por el significado que el traductor de dichos textos (en especial el Corán) pretende darles con base en sus propias creencias y elucubraciones. In this review it's offered the critical edition of three Antoni Canals (1352-1419) opuscles, from an unknown until now manuscript found in Naples. It's the Pater Noster, Ave Maria and Salve Regina translation from Latin which had the purpose of allowing to read this recommended text to the nobility and the bourgeoisie of that historic moment. The edition holds an appendix of variants between both unique manuscripts till now, one per work. It's one of the linguistically richest texts of medieval catalanovalencian religious literature. It solves some of the hapaxs, for example, níxol, 'stupid'. Se ofrece aquí la edición crítica de tres opúsculos d’Antoni Canals (1352-1419) a partir de un manuscrito desconocido hasta ahora encontrado en Nápoles. Se trata de la traducción del Pater Noster, Ave Maria y Salve Regina desde el latín con la intención de permitir leer un texto recomendado a la clase noble y burguesa del momento. La edición va acompañada de un apéndice de variantes entre los dos manuscritos conocidos hasta ahora, uno por obra. El texto es uno de los más ricos lingüísticamente de la literatura religiosa medieval catalanovalenciana. Permite resolver algunos hápaxes como níxol ‘necio’.

The author of this paper tries to display the several expedients which the translators of the Latin versions of the Bible used to adapt certain hebrew phonemes non-existent in Latin. It is also studied the morphological reorganization in the proper names because Hebrew has lost the case endings. To show these items we have chosen the Latin versions of the Book of Ruth.

In the framework of the reception in France of Petrarch’s poetry, the author analises the translations of he nzionere into French, mainly those of Gramont (1842), Genot (1969), de Blanc (1988) and Boilllet nd Rochon 1994). He compares the four translations of the songs «Vergine bella», «Italia mia» y Valle che dei lamenti iei…», praising the most recently published one, but regretting the scarse attention payed to Petrach’s poetic works by the French publishers.

The Galician literature does not rely on poets like Camões, Garcilaso or Ronsard, and this lack was not corrected even by the translations of the epoch, since the Italian classic authors did not start being translated into the Galician until up to the decade of 1980. But the late Galician version of the Canzoniere presents the great merit of having created a lexical corpus that will be to a great extent the one that allows to emulate in Galician Petrarca’s pace, musicality and artifices. In this respect we echo the Theory of the Polysystems, which had indicated the importance of the literature translated in the conformation of literary systems, as translations determine actively the constitution of the above mentioned systems and can occupy its center in case of marginal or peripheral systems.

This paper analyses the main characteristic features of Jacobo Cortines’ 1989 Spanish translation of Petrarch’s Canzoniere. It opens with a short history of all Spanish translations of this particular work, after which it focuses on the three most significant 20th-century ones, including Jacobo Cortines’. Since Canzoniere poses such great problems in metre, vocabulary and syntax, the achievements of the translator are carefully studied, the conclusion being that Cortines’ version excels all others, as it manages to combine a close rendering of the original text and a genuine artistic Spanish translation.

Enrique Garcés’ translation of Petrarch’s Canzoniere is a late product of the dissemination of Petrarquism in the Hispanic world. The author is a Portuguese by birth who spent almost all his life in Peru. The vo c a bu l a ry of his translation hardly reveals the translator’s origin while it is full of Italianisms. Some of these words had already been introduced in the Spanish lexicon through the poetic language, others were less known. In addition, his translation includes calques and rather daring borrowings from Italian. The article contains the analysis of the translation of some key-words of Petrarch’s Can -zoniere.

The translation of the sonnet which appears on pages 195-198 of the Manuscript 10186 held at the National Library in Madrid is perhaps the first trace of Petrarch’s Canzoniere in Spanish. The exegesis which accompanies this manuscript provides some ideas and concepts which help us to understand the literature written between 1400 and 1430. This exegesis also serves to ascertain the knowledge of the translator as well as the scholiast’s interpretation. Translations should not be judged only by their accuracy, but should also be evaluated on the basis of their reception and the intention with which they were prepared. The information provided by the translation, and its views on literature and culture, are more valuable than mere transcription of the original Italian text, which the Marquis also held in his library. This reassessment of translation raises a permanent debate. Do literary works possess a meaning of their own, regardless of the way they are received by readers? Or does the meaning of a literary work depend on the way it is read, translated and rewritten?

The fourth part of General Estoria by Alfonso X, in spite of conserving itself in a codex coming from the dated Regal Camera in 1280, does not count to date on an edition, which has made difficult its linguistic study. Here the examination of the language of one of its more showy sections, the dedicated one to the Nabucodonosor reign has been carried out. For it a critical edition of this segment has been prepared, considering the different manuscripts althout granting preeminence to Urb. Lat 539 of the Vatican Library, being this one the regal codex. Here the more showy linguistic characteristics of this section study, like the values of the consonantics grafics, the morphology of the numerals, the use of the article before possessive, morphology of the conditional and future and the phonetic ­ semantic and morphologic implications of apocope, among others. La Cuarta Parte de la General Estoria de Alfonso X, a pesar de conservarse en un códice procedente de la Cámara Regia datado en 1280, no cuenta hasta la fecha con una edición, lo que ha dificultado su estudio lingüístico. Aquí se ha llevado a cabo el examen de la lengua de una de sus secciones más llamativas, la dedicada al reinado de Nabucodonosor. Para ello se ha preparado una edición crítica de dicho segmento, teniendo en cuenta los diferentes manuscritos, aunque otorgando preeminencia a Urb. Lat. 539 de la Biblioteca Vaticana, por ser éste el códice regio. Aquí se estudian los rasgos lingüísticos más llamativos de esta sección, como los valores de las grafías consonánticas, la morfología de los numerales, el uso del artículo ante posesivo, la morfología del futuro y condicional, y las implicaciones fonéticosintácticas y morfológicas de la apócope, entre otros.

El presente artículo es continuación y complemento de la edición de la novella de Diego de Cañizares y de su original latino que publiqué hace unos años en esta misma revista. Tras una consideración sobre los aspectos teóricos relacionados con la práctica de la traducción durante el siglo XV castellano, se analizan las técnicas traductológicas que emplea Diego de Cañizares para convertir en novella un exemplum homilético como era la Historia de septem sapientibus de Juan Gobi.

Sappho's poetry, together with her biography, became an essential element in 19th-century Spanish literature. In this article we study the different versions of Sappho's two well-known odes as were published in our country along that century. This study includes both the literal translations from the Greek and the freer versions that came out in the literary magazines of the time. We analyse not only technical aspects on translation (degree of literality, prose/verse translations, translations made from original text / indirect versions) but also the kind of commentaries that acom pany these translations. Tanto la poesía como la propia biografía de Safo han constituido un capítulo esencial en las letras españolas del siglo XIX. En este trabajo se hace un repaso de las diferentes versiones que se publicaron en nuestro país a lo largo de ese siglo de las dos odas más conocidas de Safo. El estudio abarca tanto las traducciones directas del griego como versiones más o menos libres aparecidas en revistas de la época y obras de creación e incide no sólo en los aspectos técnicos referidos a la traducción (grado de literalidad, utilización de prosa o verso, traducción directa o indirecta) sino también en el tipo de comentarios con que se acompañan las traducciones.

Francisco Sánchez «El Brocense» publishes in Salamanca in 1600 the first Spanish translation with commentaries of Epictetus Manual. The second Spanish translator of the Manual was Gonzalo Correas (Salamanca 1630). Finally, in 1635 Quevedo edits its Epicteto y Phocilides en español, a translation in verse of Epictetus’ Manual. El Brocense» is the introductor of the neostoic movement in Spain and the direct source of Correas and Quevedo.

This work deals with the study of the enlighted José de Viera y Clavijo translation’s poetry (1731-1813). Some texts from the whole of his translated works will be selected in order to show the developed techniques.It will be analized the author’s ideas, on this literary practice, that appear in some of his preserved prologues. Our intention is to show a frequent literary practice during the XVIIIth century, that is, to study the interest for some Swiss, French and English writers. Therefore,the authors and genres that influenced on the Enlighted Spanish Literature can be observed by readers. En el presente trabajo se abordará el estudio de la traducción de la poesía del ilustrado José de Viera y Clavijo (1731-1813). Al objeto se seleccionarán algunos textos del conjunto de la obra traducida en un intento de mostrar las estrategias empleadas. Se analizarán las ideas que sobre esta práctica ha deslizado el autor en algunos de los prólogos conservados. Con todo ello se pretende mostrar una práctica literaria frecuente durante el siglo XVIII, que permitirá, además, acercarnos al interés por determinados autores foráneos, franceses, ingleses o suizos. Por tanto, el lector podrá constatar a qué géneros o a qué autores acudieron los escritores españoles del siglo XVIII con el fin de renovar o de servir de modelo a la literatura española.

This work aims to deal with some cases of variation that point to a possible linguistic change in Amondawa (Tupian-Kawahib). Concerning to phonetic aspects, variations that may imply a change in your phonological system are presented, such as: the reduction in the vowel inventory, change in the syllabic pattern and phonologization process due to the reduction of nasal allophones. Regarding to the lexicon, due to contact with non-indigenous society, there have been incorporations of words from the Portuguese language, creation of new words from Amondawa's morphological mechanisms and the adoption of proper names, foreign to culture, that significantly interfere in their traditional onomastics. Finally, regarding morphosyntactic aspects, a strong impoverishment of the verbal agreement paradigm is in progress, causing a change in the null-subject parameter., Este trabalho tem por objetivo tratar de alguns casos de variação que apontam para uma possível mudança linguística em Amondawa (Tupi-Kawahib). Quanto aos aspectos fonéticos, são apresentadas variações que podem implicar em uma alteração em seu sistema fonológico, tais como: a redução no inventário das vogais, mudança no padrão silábico e processo de fonologização devido à redução de alofones nasais. No que diz respeito ao léxico, devido ao contato com a sociedade não indígena, têm havido incorporações de palavras da língua portuguesa, criação de novas palavras a partir de mecanismos morfológicos do Amondawa e a adoção de nomes próprios alheios à cultura que interferem significativamente em sua onomástica tradicional. Por fim, quanto aos aspectos morfossintáticos, está em curso um forte processo de enfraquecimento do paradigma de concordância verbal, provocando uma mudança em seu parâmetro do sujeito nulo.
