The main idea of our research is to make an approach to Palestine in the Middle Ages combining approaches of local history and microhistory. To this end, our work focuses on the millenary city of Al Jalīl/Hebron, a city of symbolism even with Jerusalem, for being the cradle Abraham, the father of the three monotheistic religions of the Mediterranean, venerated in the delimited era by Jews and Christians as well as by Muslims. In the local context of Hebron, we would further delimit the scope of study by focusing on the historical and religious core of the city, which is the sacred precinct of the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs. The reproach that Kafka lacks narrative sense, insofar as the action of his novels or stories never seems to advance towards any goal or resolution of the plot, does not necessarily imply a negative character. The fact that practically his complete work consists of short stories or unfinished novels seems to corroborate this inability to sustain a plot. This circumstance is partly due to personal characteristics: excessive perfectionism or insecurity about his own worth, which led, as is well known, to the concealment of his work as a writer. But we can assess this in the opposite direction. What I call "vertical style" has to do with a whole conception of art, even of reality, which redeems the part as self-sufficient, as the fractal that reflects the whole on different scales. With the disturbing suspicion that there is no such whole., El reproche de que a Kafka la faltaría sentido narrativo, en la medida en que la acción de sus novelas o relatos nunca parece avanzar hacia una meta o resolución de la trama, no entraña necesariamente un carácter negativo. Que prácticamente toda su producción se componga de narraciones breves o de novelas inacabadas parece corroborar esa incapacidad para sostener un argumento. Esta circunstancia, asumida por él mismo, se debe en parte a características personales: un excesivo perfeccionismo o la inseguridad respecto a la propia valía, que condujo, como es bien sabido, al ocultamiento de su labor como escritor. Pero podemos valorar esto en sentido opuesto. Lo que yo denomino “estilo vertical” tiene que ver con toda una concepción del arte, incluso de la realidad, que redime el momento como autosuficiente, cual si fuera un fractal que refleja el todo en diferentes escalas. Con la inquietante sospecha de que no exista ese todo.

The paper aims to reconstruct Hannah Arendt's reading of Lessing, Mendelssohn and Herder, concerning their approaches to the Jewish question, in the early 1930s. The background of this reading is the difficulty that, according to the author, European Jews demonstrate since emancipation to reach a political perspective on their own history. The paper claims that, in her reading of these philosophers, Arendt identifies a tension between reason and history, whose radicalization results in an idea of ​​reason unable to grasp the historical dimension of peoples from a political point of view. The consequence is the frustration of the political promises of Jewish emancipation, and the triumph of an ahistorical assimilation´s model. However, it will be argued that, for Arendt, the Enlightenment represented by Lessing and the romanticism that Herder embodies, do not fall along the same line of continuity. On the contrary, Arendt finds in Lessing a legacy which remains valuable for the present., El objetivo de este artículo es reconstruir la lectura que realiza Hannah Arendt de Lessing, Mendelssohn y Herder en relación a sus abordajes de la cuestión judía, a comienzos de los años 30. El telón de fondo de esta lectura es la dificultad que, a juicio de la autora, evidencian los judíos europeos desde la emancipación para alcanzar una perspectiva política sobre su propia historia. Sostenemos que, en su lectura de estos filósofos, Arendt identifica una tensión entre razón e historia, cuya radicalización da como resultado una idea de razón incapaz de acoger la dimensión histórica de los pueblos en clave política. La consecuencia de esto es la frustración de las promesas políticas de la emancipación judía, y la afirmación de un modelo de asimilación desembarazado de la historia. Sin embargo, sostendremos también que, para Arendt, la Ilustración representada por Lessing y el romanticismo que encarna Herder, no se inscriben en una misma línea de continuidad. Por el contrario, Arendt encuentra tempranamente en Lessing un legado que conserva valor para el presente.

In 2004, in collaboration with the physicist Edgar Gunzig, Élisa Brune published a ‘novel’ entitled Relations d’incertitude (Relations of Uncertainty), a central notion in quantum theory, but which has an obvious symbolic and metaphorical dimension in Brune’s work. The initial project was to write a scientific treatise accessible to the public on the research carried out by Professor Gunzig around the fluctuations of the quantum vacuum as the mechanism at the origins of the universe as well as on the elaboration of the bootstrap model. However, the text soon becomes an examination of the human itinerary of Gunzig, inseparable from his professional trajectory. From the data presented in Relations d’incertitude and other historical documents, my aim is to retrace one of the essential parameters in Gunzig’s life, namely the exceptional trajectory of his mother, Rachel Eckstein, one in which reality often exceeds fiction., En 2004, Élisa Brune publica con el físico Edgar Gunzig una “novela” titulada Relations d’incertitude, una noción central en la teoría cuántica, pero que adquiere aquí una dimensión simbólica y metafórica evidente. Sobre la base de los datos recogidos en dicha novela y en otros documentos históricos, reconstruimos uno de los parámetros esenciales del itinerario de este ser atormentado: la trayectoria excepcional de su madre, Rachel Eckstein, en la que la realidad a menudo supera la ficción., En 2004, Élisa Brune publie, en compagnie du physicien Edgar Gunzig, un « roman » intitulé Relations d’incertitude, une notion centrale dans la théorie quantique, mais qui revêt ici une évidente dimension symbolique et métaphorique. À partir des données présentes dans ledit roman ainsi que dans d’autres documents historiques, nous nous proposons de retracer un des paramètres essentiels du cheminement de cet être tourmenté, à savoir la trajectoire exceptionnelle de sa mère, Rachel Eckstein, un parcours dans lequel la réalité dépasse souvent la fiction.

The Letter of Simeon ben Kosiba to Jesus ben Galgula tells us about his religious policy and the Letter of Soumaios tells us about his linguistic and cultural policy. In this essay the anti-Hellenistic ideology of Bar Kosiba is connected with Adriano’s philo-Hellenism and with his religious policy, in the process of separation from Judaism and Christianity. Just at this time appeared the neologism “christianismós” in the Letters of Ignatius of Antioch., La Carta de Simón ben Kosiba a Josué ben Galgula nos habla de su política religiosa y la Carta de Soumaios de su política lingüística y cultural. En este artículo se relaciona la ideología antihelenística de Bar Kosiba con el filohelenismo de Adriano y su política religiosa, en pleno proceso de separación de judaísmo y cristianismo. Precisamente en esta época apareció el neologismo “christianismós” en las Cartas de Ignacio de Antioquía.

This article discusses one of the most controversial topics on the creation of Rabbinic Jewish Liturgy—the origin of the Amidah, the main prayer in the Jewish religious public service, after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 E. C. To this end, the formal and literary structure of the Amidah is analyzed followed by a critical discussion on its origin that contributes to the scholarly debate on the topic. An annotated Spanish translation of this first-century prayer is rendered as an Appendix., En este artículo se trata sobre la controvertida cuestión del origen de la amidá, principal oración del servicio religioso judío, en el contexto de creación de la liturgia rabínica tras la destrucción del Templo de Jerusalén en el año 70 d. C. Para ello se analiza primero su estructura formal y literaria, ofreciendo a continuación un análisis crítico sobre su origen que se hace eco del debate académico acerca de la cuestión. En apéndice se ofrece una traducción anotada de esta oración rabínica del s. I d. C.

This article makes a critical reading of two Types of Faith from an approximation to its sources and its context. Analysing two types of faith suggested by Buber, we identify the characterization of the same from the perspective of the history of religions. This raises the development, from a philosophicaltheological perspective, of a reflection on the Buber’s criteria of demarcation in the distinction between emunah and pistis, while on the image that of Jesus and Paul reflects his work., El presente artículo ofrece una lectura crítica de Dos modos de fe desde una aproximación a sus fuentes y a su contexto. Analizando los dos tipos de fe sugeridos por Buber, se indaga en su caracterización desde la óptica de la historia de las religiones. Esto plantea el desarrollo, desde una perspectiva filosófico-teológica, de una reflexión en torno a los criterios de demarcación buberianos en la distinción entre emuná y pistis, entre judaísmo y cristianismo, a la vez que sobre la imagen que de Jesús y de Pablo refleja la obra.

This paper offers a comparative study of the decisive moment in the biblical and quranic story of Eve, generally perceived as having been the violation of the covenant made with the Creator. According to it, Adam and Eve were forbidden to approach the tree or to eat from its fruit, a fact that is generally perceived as having been meant to establish common and different structural elements. The violation of the divine order did not come out of nowhere; it had its causes and consequences. The triple T divides the violation into three stages. In the first one, which is the temptation, we encounter the incitement and the initiation to the transgressor incident. Then, in the transgression, we find out, how the disobedience happened. Finally, comes the tragedy, which includes the results and the consequences., En este artículo se pretende llevar a cabo un estudio comparativo del momento decisivo de los relatos bíblico y coránico de la vida de Eva que es la violación del pacto hecho con el Creador, el de no acercarse ni comer del árbol prohibido, con el fin de establecer elementos estructurales comunes y distintos. La violación de la orden divina no nació de la nada, tenía sus causas y consecuencias. La Triple T designa las tres etapas de dicha violación. En la primera que es la tentación, veremos la incitación e iniciación al hecho transgresor. A continuación, en la transgresión, explicaremos cómo fue la desobediencia. Por último, viene la tragedia que engloba los resultados y las consecuencias.

The aim of this work is to contribute to elucidate Wittgenstein’s conception of Judaism. It is generally acknowledged that Otto Weininger’s work influenced the thought of Wittgenstein, but there is no agreement on the content of that influence. Here we argue that it is perceptible not only in the wittgensteinian conception of ethics, geniality, talent, etc., but also in his characterization of Judaism and the way the philosopher uses this idea., El objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir a dilucidar la concepción wittgensteiniana del judaísmo. En general se admite que la obra de Otto Weininger influyó en el pensamiento de Wittgenstein, pero no hay acuerdo sobre el contenido de esa influencia. Aquí sostenemos que esta es perceptible, no solo en la concepción wittgensteiniana de la ética, la genialidad, el talento, etc., sino también en su caracterización del judaísmo y en el uso que el filósofo hace de esta idea.

The Registrum epistularum, the compendium that collects the epistles written by Gregory the Great during his Papacy (590-604 A.D.) is a fundamental source to approach various issues of the period. Among more than 860 letters sent by the papal scrinium, 26 refer to Jews. They are, as the majority of scholars asserts, a material of great value to reconstruct the relationship between Jews and Christians. In this paper I will center the analysis on the epistles alluding to Jewish holders of slaves in order to apprehend not only the situation of the Jews mentioned in those communications, but also to understand the positions of Gregory the Great and of others Churchmen on the problem. I seek to demonstrate that although there were symbolic imperatives that compelled both lay legislators and Churchmen to avoid Jewish control over Christians, the principal reason for this attitude was the tendency of the part of the Jews to convert their slaves, not for proselytizing purposes but rather, principally, mainly for practical motives., El Registrum epistularum, obra que compila las epístolas producidas por Gregorio Magno en el período en el que estuvo a cargo de la Cátedra romana (590-604 d.C.), es una herramienta fundamental al momento de abordar diversas temáticas. Entre las más de 860 cartas que despachó el scrinium papal, 26 refieren a judíos, representando –como ya ha advertido la crítica– un material de gran relieve para reconstituir los vínculos entre judíos y cristianos. En este trabajo centraremos la mirada en las epístolas que aluden a poseedores judíos de esclavos, con el fin de comprender tanto la situación de aquellos señalados en las comunicaciones como las posiciones de Gregorio Magno y de otros hombres de Iglesia frente al problema. Aspiramos a demostrar que si bien existían imperativos simbólicos que llevaban a legisladores laicos y a hombres de Iglesia a intentar impedir el control de cristianos por parte de judíos, el principal temor detrás de tales medidas era la tendencia de los judíos a convertir a sus servi, no por motivos proselitistas sino, principalmente, prácticos.

The purpose of this paper is to present the Qumran conception of temple (eschatological temple and miqdaš ’adam) as an intermediate stage between the understanding of temple in Jewish eschatology and the Ismaili innerness of the “temple of light.” All of it in the frame of the conception of temple as Garden of Eden based in the “alternative memory”2 yielded by parabiblical priestly traditions., El objetivo de este artículo es presentar la concepción de templo de Qumrán (templo escatológico y miqdaš ’adam) como un estadio intermedio entre la visión del Templo en la escatología judía y la interiorización ismailí del “templo de luz”, todo ello en el marco de la concepción de templo como Jardín del Edén basada en la “memoria alternativa” (Elior 2014) suministrada por las tradiciones sacerdotales parabíblicas.

This paper offers a comprehensive view of Judaism in our days and presents the main problems and challenges derived from the encounter between Judaism and Modernitiy. It reflects in particular the question about Jewish identity regarding the many and different answers to questions such as who is a Jew? and what is the meaning of being a Jew?, En este artículo se presenta una visión panorámica de la situación actual del judaísmo así como de los principales problemas y desafíos que afronta en la actualidad. De manera especial se reflexiona sobre el concepto de identidad judía, pues son muchas y diferentes las respuestas a las preguntas ¿quién es judío? y ¿qué significa ser judío?

In spite of the acrimonious criticism issued against it, Greek philosophy always exerted an irresistible attraction to Christian writers of the fi rst centuries. Not only did their censure of divine anthropomorphism, mythology, and polytheism rely on Greek philosophical precedents. Surprisingly, also their attacks against Greek philosophy itself often resorted to philosophical interschool polemics. This paper, however, focuses on the positive and creative side of this appropriation: during the second and third centuries Clement of Alexandria and Origen raised the cultural level of Christian theology by their large use of the Greek philosophical discourse. The present study focuses on how they dealt with the problem of the existence of evil in the context of God’s creation and traces their approach back to Greek philosophical precedents., A pesar de su ataque contra la fi losofía griega, los autores cristianos de los primeros siglos siempre se vieron atraídos por la fi losofía griega. No sólo su censura del antropomorfi smo divino, la mitología y el politeísmo partía de los precedentes sentados por los fi lósofos griegos, sino que incluso los ataques contra la propia fi losofía se basaban, a menudo, en la polémica entre escuelas fi losófi cas. El presente estudio se centra en el lado positivo y creativo de dicha apropiación: durante los siglos segundo y tercero Clemente de Alejandría y Orígenes elevaron el nivel de la teología cristiana gracias a una amplia integración en la misma del discurso fi losófi co griego. El análisis del tratamiento de estos autores del problema del mal en el contexto de la creación divina proporciona un ejemplo excelente para acercarnos a dicha integración.

This paper reexamines Auden’s elegy In memory of Sigmund Freud through the lenses of Auden’s own exile in America. The transference of artistic experiences, attitudes and cultural concerns displayed by Auden allows the reader to glimpse at the complex condition of his exile at the end of the thirties. Leading to the analysis of this condition this paper revises Auden’s political changes at that crossroad, the cultural options offered by America at that time, his poetic reorientation as evinced in In H. Memory of W. Yeats, his relation with Chester Kallman and approach to the Jewish religious tradition and its impact in The Age of Anxiety. The psychoanalytic reading of the elegy tries to capture the resonance of these experiences and some of their biographical background., Este trabajo examina la elegía In Memory of Sigmund Freud de Auden a la luz del propio exilio del autor en Estados Unidos. La transferencia de experiencias artísticas, actitudes e inquietudes culturales que Auden pone en juego en este poema permite entrever la compleja condición del exilio en plena guerra mundial. Conducente al análisis de esta condición, el trabajo revisa las zozobras del compromiso político de Auden, el clima cultural inglés y norteamericano hacia finales de los treinta, la reorientación de su voz elegíaca a partir de In H. Memory of W. Yeats, su relación con Chester Kallman y su acercamiento al judaísmo y la significación de esta vinculación en The Age of Anxiety. Finalmente, la lectura psicoanalítica de la elegía pretende reflejar la incidencia de estas experiencias en su composición.

This article focuses on the nautical chart of 1413 by the Majorcan Mecia de Viladestes in order to show, through the analysis of its texts and images, the different religions which coexisted in the world of the fifteenth century, and how they were understood in the West. On this map there is space allocated for Christianity, Islam and the Indian religions; the personal experiences of the cartographer, a Jewish convert to Christianity in 1391, seem also to be revealed. Among the iconographic motifs that will be analyzed are the Red Sea which was crossed by the people of Israel and Mountain Sinai, where Moses received the Tablets of the Covenant; the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulcher; the hajj or Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca; and the worshipping of the “idol of metal with nine heads and nine hands”., Este artículo se centra en la carta náutica de 1413 del mallorquín Mecia de Viladestes para descubrir, a través del análisis de sus textos e imágenes, las distintas religiones que coexistían en el mundo en el siglo XV, y cómo eran entendidas en Occidente. En este mapa, en el que hay cabida para el cristianismo, el islam y las religiones indias, parecen desvelarse también las vivencias personales de este cartógrafo, un judío convertido al cristianismo en 1391. Entre los motivos iconográficos que serán analizados se encuentran el Mar Rojo atravesado por el pueblo de Israel y el Monte Sinaí, donde Moisés recibió las Tablas de la Ley; la ciudad de Jerusalén y el Santo Sepulcro; el ha^y^y o la peregrinación musulmana a La Meca; y la adoración del “ídolo de metal con nueve cabezas y nueve manos”.

Most often Judaism is perceived as a widespread localism, a closed system of minutious practicing, far away from any universalistic trend or tendency, although jewish communities and/or individuals can be found all over the world. We find them as a widespread minority along history and earth (time and space), always fighting for survivency and identity preservation together with a lack of a central and unitarian authority, even inside different branches of judaism, and the apparent unconcern towards proselitism, which offers an image of a closed community of believers, only interested in its own reality and welfare. This attitude is often set in contrast with that of Christianism or Islam, openly engaged, both of them, in religious proselitism and conversion, basically grounded on apodictic formulation: there is no salvation outside the group (Christianity or Islam). The biblical Book of Jonah shows quite a different bias in raising Judaism at the beginning of Common Era., Con frecuencia el judaísmo es considerado como un sistema cerrado de minuciosas prácticas, alejado de cualquier tendencia universalista.
