Statistics from Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 has shown that the number of fatality in the construction industry is 5 times more than in other sectors. The total fatalities in construction are 796 in year 2013 and out of this 796, there were 294 fall fatalities. Hence, there is an urgent need to mitigate this problem. A study has been conducted to investigate the root causes of fall hazards in construction site. Therefore, this paper is intended to identify and highlights the types of fall hazards that are most commonly found at construction sites today and the most causes contribute to fall as well as the most effective solutions to overcome the fall hazards. The data collection was being carried out through questionnaire survey to the construction company within Kuching areas. The data were then analyzed by using Likert scaling method. The finding of this study indicates that most fall hazards are caused by roof falls and scaffolding falls where communication barrier is the main problem causes the fall hazards. Besides, the responses from the survey had shown that workplace inspection that conducted weekly and through checklist and by informing affected workers involved about the result of the checklist is the adoptable typical measure to reduce the fall hazards. In conclusion, the problem of fall hazards could be improved and the findings of this study will be helped for further research as well as relevant reference in order to mitigate fall accidents in Kuching.

The need for continuous improvement (CI) for the productivity of construction professionals and operatives in the Malaysian construction industry cannot be overemphasized. Companies today seek competitive edge in terms of profitability. For any organization or company to excel, it must consider its personnel as the most valuable resource. Nations and organizations must take the aspect of their human resources in a dynamic concept, otherwise they risk losing their competitiveness and being overtaken by their competitors. This paper is aimed at assessing the profitability of integrating a CI process in the human resource development plan of Malaysian construction companies. The main objectives set out includes, to determine the implementation strategies of CI in companies; identify the benefits of human resource development in Malaysian construction industry; examine critical success factors to promote CI in Malaysian construction industry; identify the barriers and challenges to CI in Malaysian construction companies. The method used is review paper by drawing inferences from the findings of selected journals. The findings revealed that CI in form of training and performance appraisal, are positively related to the competitiveness and profit of a company. Among the benefits of implementing CI are that employees working under healthy environment, customer’s satisfaction are guaranteed and increased company financial returns. CI can increase profitability, various diagrams and analysis are tools used in CI. The study established that Malaysian construction industry is rated low in the aspect of CI of its workforce.

4. An Assessment of Knowledge Transfer Practices for Malaysian Construction Firm

The aims of this paper are to identify the main factors driving or hindering knowledge transfer practice in the Malaysian construction firm. With extensive knowledge transfer theoretical perspective guides, 17 factors are identified as the key variables that influence construction firm performance for knowledge transfer effectiveness. A mixed methodology approach was employed with qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews and quantitative data collected through questionnaire survey of the Malaysian contractors. A survey among 151 respondents including a different contractor registration grade was employed for the study. The survey shows that a seven-teen (17) factors known as creating shared awareness for information sharing, communication, personal skills, individual attitude, training, organizational culture, information technology, motivation, monitoring and supervision, service quality, information accessibility, information supply, socialization process, knowledge tools, coaching and monitoring, staff briefing and information sharing were identify as a key dimension for knowledge transfer success. This finding suggest that through improvement of each factor, the recognition of the whole strategic knowledge transfer process can be increase thus helping to strengthen the Malaysian construction organization for competitive advantages.
