The article discusses problems that altered the output of Canadian oil-sands producers Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. and Nexen Energy ULC in late August 2015 and the subsequent increase in synthetic crude oil prices. According to the article, Canadian Oil Sands stopped production after an August 29 fire at a northern Alberta facility, and Nexen, the Canadian unit of Chinese state-controlled energy firm Cnooc Ltd., indicated that it would shut down pipelines in compliance with Canadian regulatory authorities. The article presents comments from consulting firm IHS Energy analyst Kevin Birn.
