This article describes the effect of a federal court ruling on cigarette advertising. Unless overturned on appeal, the ruling will force cigarette makers to eliminate the use of words such as "light" and "low-tar" from ads and cigarette names. Phillip Morris USA will have to change Marlboro Lights and Ultra Lights and R.J. Reynolds will have to change Camel Lights. Cigarette makers will need to be careful not to make smokers suspicious that other aspects of the cigarettes have also changed. INSET: Up in Smoke.
