This study investigates information literacy skills influence on EIR utilisation among two polytechnics students in South-west Nigeria. The descriptive research design was employed for this study and the population consisted of polytechnic students from The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Federal Polytechnic, Ede. There were 7610 students from both polytechnics. Simple random technique was employed with a sample fraction of 5% was drawn amounting to 381. The questionnaire was the main instrument used for data gathering and the questionnaire was pre-tested using Cronbach-alpha to determine the reliability co-efficient. Data collected was analyzed using SPSS and PPMC. It was found in the study that the students from both polytechnics possessed moderate information literacy skills level and that a positive significant relationship exists between information literacy skills and the use of EIR among the students from both institutions. The study therefore concluded that the information literacy skills possessed by the students influences the EIR usage which in turn enhance their academic performance. Recommendations were made based on the findings.

The study examined information literacy skills as a correlate to the use of library resources among Polytechnic students in Delta State Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study aimed at determining the level of information literacy skills, ascertaining the extent to which the students information literacy skills affect their use of library resources, and finding out the relationship between information literacy skills and library resources among Polytechnic students in Delta State Nigeria. Two research questions were postulated, and one hypothesis tested for the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The Population of the study was 16,050 respondents drawn from the three polytechnics in Delta State Nigeria. The Sample size was 642 respondents. The cluster and random sampling were the sampling techniques used. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire; the inferential and descriptive statistics were used to analyze data collected. The findings indicated that the level of information literacy skills possessed by Polytechnic students in Delta State Nigeria is low. Also, the extent to which their information literacy skills affect their use of library resources is low. It was concluded that a significant relationship exists between information literacy skills and Polytechnic students use of library resources. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that collaborate efforts should be made between the management of Polytechnics, librarians and other teaching staff geared towards developing students information literacy skills for sustainable independent learning.

This paper examined assessment of Open Educational Resources (OER) by students in selected Academic Institutions in Southwest Nigeria. A descriptive research design was used for this study and the instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The population of this study comprised two hundred and fifty two respondents from selected academic institutions and a stratified sampling technique was used to select respondents from each of the nine institutions investigated. This study assessed the use of Open Educational Resources by students in nine academic institutions in Nigeria which comprised (Federal, State and Private Universities; Polytechnics; and Colleges of Education) in Nigeria. Findings illustrates that 40.5% of students do not use OER because they are not aware of OER. Male students use more OER than females. Finding indicates that 21.4% of students access OER through multimedia, while 32.5% of students access OER with their laptops because it is portable and convenient to move from one location to another. Analysis shows that Master degree students had 20.6% awareness of OER than other class of students. Result shows that students of government owned institutions are more knowledgeable in OER as University of Lagos have the highest with 15.1% through types of institutions. Analysis from Federal Government owned institutions such as (university, polytechnic and college of education) indicates a high percent of 41.3% which may be due to the fact that Federal Government institutions possess the bests of scholars because years of training and experience on the job, and interaction between lecturers and students from different states, culture and religion in Nigeria.

The study was designed to investigate the availability and accessibility of information resources by students in tertiary institution: A case study of Gboko Polytechnic Gboko, Benue State, Nigeria. The study employed a survey research design. Population of the study comprised of 562 students of the polytechnic under study. 120 respondents were draw from the population using simple random sampling technique to form the sample size. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The collected data was analyzed using simple percentages. The study revealed that information resources in the library under study are grossly inadequate. The library has few books, newspapers/magazines which are not even current and dictionaries. The study also revealed that the available information resources in the library understudy are not accessible. The study identified the problem to availability and accessibility of information resources to include lack of awareness of the information materials available in the library, lack of internet facilities, and no library catalogue in the library, lack of money to acquire library resources, lack of knowledge on how to use information materials and lack of qualified library staff. The study finally identified strategies that will be employed to overcome the identified problems to include money should be made available for the procurement of library materials, provision of computers and internet facilities in the library, proper awareness should be created by the library on the information resources they have, employment of more qualified library staff, information retrieval tools such as catalogue, abstracts, etc. should be prepared to ease accessibility and organization of intensive user education programme to teach students how to use library materials. The study concluded that, information resources should be made available and access should be created to enable students utilize the resources effectively.

The value of records in the area of reference, historical and administrative use in any Nigerian polytechnic library cannot be overlooked. It is true that available archival records and manuscripts abound in most Nigerian polytechnic libraries, their scattered nature makes them difficult to be traced when the need for it arises. The study focuses on the desirability for polytechnic libraries to establish archival sub – systems within their systems so that valuable administrative, research, reference, historical records and manuscripts of vital values are preserved and disseminated. This approach would bring their maximum utilization by researchers into use. Social survey research method was adopted while the instruments used for data collection were questionnaire, interviews and observation. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and tabular presentation using bar chart. The findings of the study clearly revealed that most Nigerian polytechnic libraries do not have separate archival units within their systems although archival records and manuscripts are found in these libraries. It was observed that records considered to be archival in nature are located in the various units of the libraries headed by unit heads and treated as library materials. This makes them difficult to be located on request. The study concluded by recommending that the Nigerian polytechnic libraries should establish a separate archival units within their systems to be headed by an archivist so that the utilization of archival records and manuscripts would be enhanced and their selection, acquisition, organization, preservation and dissemination would be brought into focus in line with provenance of archive while the unit should be managed by a professional and experienced archivist.

Information resources utilisation plays a major role in the teaching profession. The quality of teaching, research, and self development of teachers in any institution depends largely on the level of their interaction with the various information resources at their disposal. This study examined the types of information resources available for teaching and learning in Nigerian polytechnics and their impact on lecturers’ teaching effectiveness. Using a survey research design, 1,411people comprising 46 lecturers teaching 4 selected courses (electric circuit theory, engineering management, inorganic chemistry, computer graphics and animation) at the HND level and 1,365 HND II students (offering those courses) across 12 Federal Polytechnics in Nigeria were selected through multi stage sampling technique. Two types of structured questionnaires – one for lecturers and one for students were administered on the sample. Total response was 1256 (89%). Data were analysed using the descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression analysis. Findings revealed that information resources available for lecturers were mainly textbooks (82.6%) and journals (78.3%), while electronic resources were barely available. Also, level of accessibility especially to print information resources was high among lecturers. Though availability and accessibility of information resources were found to have a multiple positive influence on teaching effectiveness; accessibility of information resources was the major predictor of teaching effectiveness (18%). The study recommends that while provision of information resources (print and electronic) has increased in polytechnics, access, especially, to electronic resources should be ensured so as to enhance utilisation vis a vis teaching effectiveness.
