This article uses research in relation to the provision of public services and infrastructures to support the thesis that primarily one particular perspective on space - namely a material or quantifying perspective - is reflected in current empirical research. The article thus proposes the use of the concept of relational space by Martina Löw (2001) in empirical research to improve our empirical understanding of the space relevant for local people. To conclude, potential insights gained are outlined on the basis of the conceptualisation of a study of private colleges in rural areas in Germany.

2011 zählt Deutschland 100 staatlich anerkannte Privathochschulen. 1981 gab es noch keine einzige. Ein Jahr darauf revolutionierte Konrad Schily die Hochschullandschaft mit der staatlichen Anerkennung der privaten Universität Witten/Herdecke. Schily, zwanzig Jahre deren Präsident und für die SPD und FDP auch politisch aktiv, verrät im Gespräch mit 360°, warum er gerne eine juristische Fakultät gründen, die Staatsmacht beschränken und den Papierausstoß des Bundestags verringern würde.

Der Beitrag arbeitet für das Forschungsfeld der Daseinsvorsorge und der Bereitstellung von Infrastruktureinrichtungen an der These, dass es in erster Linie eine bestimmte Perspektive auf Raum - nämlich eine materielle bzw. quantifizierende - ist, die sich innerhalb der aktuellen empirischen Forschung ausprägt. Ergänzend schlägt er deshalb das relationale Raumkonzept von Martina Löw (2001) für die empirische Forschung vor, um genau den Raum empirisch fassbar zu machen, der für die Menschen vor Ort relevant ist. Abschließend werden potenzielle Erkenntnisgewinne anhand der Konzeption einer Untersuchung über private Hochschulen in ländlichen Räumen skizziert., This article focuses on the extant research in the field of public services and the provision of infrastructures. Building on the concept 'Raumsoziologie' by Martina Löw, the developed framework improves our understanding of how space is constituted by local individuals. Taken together, this paper provides a new theoretical perspective on rural areas, which is illustrated in a case study of private colleges in rural areas in Germany.
