Preservation consists in avoiding or changing, as far as possible, any materials, techniques and behaviour patterns that have been identified as risk or danger to cultural heritage. Today, preservation deals with large quantities and masses. The infrastructure and the damage survey system established at the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar after the fire in 2004 serve to illustrate some aspects of the risk management. The article presents a report on the joint project of the Latin American Library, Bibliothek des Ibero-Amerikanischen Instituts Preußischer Kulturbesitz (IAI), and the research institute Frauenhofer-Institut für Produktionsanlagen und Konstruktionstechnik (IPK). The goal of the study was to find technical solutions for the digital reconstruction of fragmented documents in archives of both larger and smaller libraries, and resulting solutions were published in a handbook.
