The article presents information on the effect of simmering on the chemical and mechanical properties of paper. Iron gall ink corrosion of paper threatens to destroy a large portion of historic manuscripts, records and drawings globally. A great deal of effort has been and continues to be, invested in studying and understanding the causes and pathways of iron gall ink corrosion of paper, and the efficacy of various conservation treatments. Among the many traditional treatments, "boiling paper" as a treatment for corroded iron gall ink documents has been used for more than 30 years 68.

The article reports on the deacidification of archives. It has been discovered that in the process of deacidification with organic solvent solutions, the diethyl zinc treatment did not cause any decrease in the tensile strength of acidic mechanical paper. It is not just enough to bring some protection to the paper after a deacidification treatment, but its behavior upon ageing must also be taken into consideration. It has been discovered that the treatment of a paper with a solution of amino alkoxy silane in absolute ethanol brought about a significant improvement of the breaking length.

The article studies the application of the freeze-drying process to water-damaged archival and library materials. By soaking samples for 18 hours and draining for 5 hours, reproducible soaked samples were obtained; the amount of absorbed water was 121 ± 1 % in relation to the initial dry weight. The method was reproducible, simple and economic. The freeze-drying and evaporative-drying of soaked samples resulted in the complete drying of the paper in 18 hours, without excessive damage. With regard to antique documents, especially those containing miniatures or paintings, re-conditioning of dried, brittle paper is recommended, before handling.

This paper examines digital archiving policies of open access (OA) electronic scholarly journals in Central Europe. The research sample consists of 1589 journals from nine Central European countries registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Results show that of the 1589 journals, 69% of them have an archiving policy. In terms of the number of indexed journals, Poland ranks first with 592 journals. Switzerland is at the forefront of digital archiving with 89% of archived journals. It was also found that Portico and national libraries are the most widely used archives, and that 19% of the preserved journals are archived in more than one archive. A preliminary analysis was also conducted to investigate the possible existence of a relationship between journal rank and digital archiving. The results show a higher number of JCR indexed titles, as well as a higher ranking, among archived journals. The paper also compares the status of archiving policies among Asian and Central European countries. The article focuses on a strengthening treatment for archives. The strengthening agents used in this treatment include methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose, hydroxy propyl cellulose and the deacidification agent, magnesium carbonate. The research revealed that strengthening of paper using methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose or hydroxy propyl cellulose improved the tensile strength, tearing strength and folding endurance of the paper and thereby, reveals the effect of the strengthening agent. The research also revealed that addition of magnesium carbonate to the strengthening emulsion results in simultaneous strengthening and deacidification.

The cooperation between archives and libraries with regard to the cataloguing of autographs and papers has changed dramatically over the course of the last twenty years, mainly due to the use of electronic media. By now there are online data banks which contain information on the autograph and paper collections of the Federal Archives Koblenz and the Berlin State Library. The article focuses on a research conducted in order to examine the antifungal activity of products commonly used in Archives in order to prevent damage caused by microorganisms. These products must fulfill the following three criteria. Firstly, they must not be an occupational hazard. Secondly, they must not have any detrimental effect on the documents and thirdly, they must be able to control bacterial and fungal contamination. The research revealed that a solution of water and alcohol in the proportion 30:70 would be fruitful in controlling the most frequently isolated fungal development in sampled archives.

In her influential article published in 2016, Alexandra Walsham, Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge, coined the metaphor that 'Archives are the factories and laboratories of the historian'. Traditionally viewed as neutral storehouses of official records passively awaiting historians' scrutiny, conceptions of archives have expanded in recent decades. Archives are now understood as complex social and cultural entities that actively participate in shaping understandings of the past. This paper examines shifting perspectives on the nature and functions of archives through a critical analysis of key debates. Specifically, this paper adopts a hermeneutic lens to critically engage Walsham's metaphor and move beyond its potential limitations through situated analysis and interpretation. This paper explores how archives are actively implicated in knowledge construction through their contents, organisational frameworks, and interactions with historians. Recognising archives as fragmented, culturally contingent remnants that mediate engagement with the past, the paper calls for collaborative, reflective approaches between archivists and historians. The paper also acknowledges historians' subjective interpretive roles while advocating consultation of archivists' contextual expertise. Ultimately, it advances methodological discussions on writing history through a nuanced appreciation of archives as dynamic mediators within historical research, not transparent conduits neutrally supplying facts. The term "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) is increasingly permeating public consciousness as it has gained more popularity in recent years, especially within the landscape of academia and libraries. AI in libraries has been a trending subject of interest for some time, as within the library there are numerous departments that serve a role in collectively contributing to the library's mission. Consequently, it is imperative to consider AI's influence on the digital preservation of historic documents. This paper delves into the historical evolution of preservation methods driven by technological advancements as, throughout history, libraries, archives, and museums have grappled with the challenge of preserving historical collections, while many of the traditional preservation methods are costly and involve a lot of manual (human) effort. AI being the catalyst for transformation could change this reality and perhaps redefine the process of preservation; thus, this paper explores the emerging trend of incorporating AI technology into preservation practices and provides predictions regarding the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in preservation for the future. With that in mind, this paper addresses the following questions: could AI be what changes or creates a paradigm shift in how preservation is done?; and could it be the thing that will change the way history is safeguarded? The article evaluates the suitability of viscometric and colorimetric methods for the evaluation of the degradation of iron gall ink carrying samples. For original documents, where sampling for accelerated ageing is very restricted, scanning device assisted brightness determination of the versa of the writing is proposed for the evaluation of the effects of conservation treatment on paper during accelerated ageing. Linear correlation between bursting strength and DP as well as brightness values on the verso of the writing were obtained for a paper sample deacidified with a variety of non-aqueous treatments.

The article reports on the ink corrosion on handwritten documents at the Marburg University. The documents at the university were stored in barrier papers and were partially micro-filmed. The plan to digitalize jurist Carl Friedrich von Savigny's estate offered the first opportunity to display a spectrum of ink corrosion damage symptoms and to take conservation measures.

The article discusses the process called photoreproduction used in ancient architectural design for conservation in architectural archives. Reproduction of diazotype prints usually exhibit a reddish pink to orange discoloration caused by alkaline conditions. Most archivist and other collection managers do not know the best way to treat and store this kind of documents. However, this process proves to be promising in the conservation industry.

This article sheds light on the digital transformation of Richard Wossidlo's regional ethnographic and linguistic collection into the research environment WossiDiA. The Digital Wossidlo Archive is based on making handwritten sources and their indexing visible to users. It has been implemented as a hypergraph database, whose abundance of node and hyperedge types is suitable for representing the diversity and delicate nature of the tradition archive. This paper will discuss how proprietary properties have been preserved in the transformation process and how the digital collection is compatible with big data scenarios. Follow-up projects have contributed to this. "Efficiency," the necessity of resource-saving, will also be problematized. Historically, conservation of maps included the application of silk facings, heavy cloth backings and use of inappropriate adhesives. This combination of papers, linings and adhesives often causes undulations, tenting and stiffness, hindering their use. Furthermore, silk yellows over time, which compromises the visual interpretation. The National Archives UK faced these problems when preparing Samuel Holland's 1765 3×4 m map of St John's Island for display. This paper outlines the complex conservation treatment of a large scale paper object, the creative and innovative techniques developed and the challenges of preparing such an object for display. All products from previous repairs in 1973 were removed using aqueous treatments, the distorted map was mended and realigned and in a major undertaking this large scale object was lined, using up to date techniques. This required building a bridge and a platform and forming a team of 12 colleagues to accomplish the complex and challenging multi-layered lining. A better understanding of treatments and materials available today enabled a successful conservation treatment, which left the map more accessible, visually engaging and flexible for the future, whilst changing protocols of future treatment of maps at The National Archives with application for the wider conservation community. The construction of national identity through historical narrative is inextricably linked to archival keeping, access and privilege. In settler-colonial contexts, archives and the way they are used are always political. Drawing on decolonising methodologies and critical archival theory, this paper examines challenges faced by an interdisciplinary project team who received University of Melbourne Engagement funding to initiate a process of repatriation. This project has been grounded in the process of consultation and engagement with the Indigenous communities from which these records originated, and the process of reconnecting former students of Mount Margaret, and their families. In confronting the inherent cultural biases of archives, this paper considers particular problems for institutions in developing methods of repatriation alongside record collection and keeping. This paper presents a critical analysis of disciplinary discussions on user-generated contributions to institutional archives collections metadata and attempts to assess its impact on professional archivists' approach to archival description. It frames archival description as a distinct knowledge domain and considers the possibilities, limitations, and contradictions of expanding this key function of archival work beyond the professional purview. It discusses how enhanced user participation might contribute to the knowledge and information infrastructures of archives and what this might suggest for archival description going forward. It identifies various practical, theoretical, and ethical implications for archives emerging from this body of literature, all undergirded by the role of technology in shaping the cultural and historical phenomena that archives seek to capture. This article revisits the history of the Franciscan archives under Ottoman rule by focusing on archival documents, practices, and spaces in the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Fojnica. Ottoman papers and archives preserved in the Franciscan spaces were often associated with Ottoman oppression. In this study, the author demonstrates that the documentary relationship between monasteries and Ottoman chanceries was not one-directional and cannot be characterized as oppressive. Franciscans actively engaged with the Ottoman documents and genres; they relied on the Ottoman vocabularies and legitimacy embedded in the documents, and subverted them at the same time, carving out their own physical and discursive spaces, which were tied to and yet different from the imaginaries of the Ottoman imperial order. The article discusses the survey on archival manuscripts in Slovakia. Documents from the University Library, Slovak National Archives, both in Bratislava, and Slovak National Library in Martin represented the 170 collection. Corrosion damages, solubility of the materials, and stamps used other than iron gall inks comprised the objectives of the researchers as determined in a criteria. One of the results revealed that 41 percent of the materials arrived at 4.1-5.0 pH value.

Digital cultural archives and databases are promising an era of heritage democratization and an enhancement of the role of arts in everyday cultures. It is hoped that mass digitization initiatives in many corners of the world can facilitate the secure preservation of human cultural heritage, with easy access and diverse ways for creative reuse. Understanding the dialogic processes within these increasingly vast databases necessitates a dynamic conceptualization of data they contain. The paper argues that this can be found in Juri Lotman's cultural semiotic notion of text and text's functions in culture. It elaborates on the three key characteristics of text – expression, boundary, and structure – as manifested within the digital semiosphere. At the same time, the textual dialogues within digital archives are increasingly conditioned by metadata, which is hereby conceptualized as metalanguage inducing a modeling effect on archived texts and defining their possible sphere of dynamics. To balance the explanations of creative operations of digital archives, the paper also demonstrates their auto-communicative mechanisms for facilitating cultural continuities and stability. On July 9–13, 2018, the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA, hosted the tenth annual Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI). A week-long institute designed to strengthen archival education and research and support academic cohort-building and mentoring, AERI is open to all academic faculty and students working in archival studies, both nationally and internationally, as well as others engaged in archival education, research, and scholarship, broadly conceived. Attended by researchers, educators, doctoral students, and students enrolled in the AERI-affiliated Emerging Archival Scholars Program (EASP), this tenth anniversary gathering marked the Institute's first meeting in the Southeast. Alabama provided a valuable lens for considering critical archival issues: discussions of memory, community activism, and representation were particularly vivid in a region that continues to consider its past, and its continued influence on present social, political, and economic environments. In this introduction, the Co-Chair of the Institute and Guest Editor of this issue, Tonia Sutherland, provides a brief overview of the conference highlights and introduces the papers presented in the Special Issue. The paper presents the resources offered by the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen (WAB) on Wittgenstein Source. Moreover, it describes the conditions for their use. Finally, the paper also briefly introduces WAB's "Nachlass transcriptions" site from which all of WAB's transcriptions of the Wittgenstein Nachlass can be downloaded, and the tool WiTTFind which permits lemmatized online search in the entire Nachlass and is the result of more than five years of close cooperation between WAB and the Centrum für Informations- und Sprachverarbeitung (CIS) at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität München. The article provides information about the journal "Restaurator," which was founded in 1969 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It evolved when the care and preservation of archives and libraries began to generate wider interest in many countries, which archivists and restorers began to collect and exchange information on the paper-based materials. The author also states that since the beginning, the journal focused on presenting the results of scientific research with the goal of establishing an international platform for disseminating knowledge about preservation and conservation of paper-based collections.

The article focuses on the conservation and restoration of the manuscript of Bahai teachings "The Station of This Day," written by calligrapher Miskin Qalam. Since the Station of this Day was on permanent display for a long time, in an uncontrolled environment it was expected that it would be in poor condition. The examination revealed that the surface of the paper was slightly brittle and in many areas of the paper surface and inks hazing was visible. The most noticeable damage was a long line of surface losses along a diagonal area through the first 6 lines in the top left quadrant. A large portion of the border was also missing at the top right corner and small losses were visible throughout the object.

Digitization of archival materials has gained global popularity as both practice in cultural heritage institutions and a scholarly topic. However, ethical issues involved in digitization, especially the challenges brought by cross-cultural archival digitization practices, have been only weakly explored. In the domain of Asian Studies librarianship in the United States, digitizing archive materials acquired from Asian countries in academic and research libraries has facilitated Asian Studies research, but also brought up ethical concerns of inappropriately translating the original culture for new audiences. This paper treats digitization as a translational device bridging cultural contexts, public audiences, and personal accounts, as well as openness and privacy. Focusing on the unique open-access digital archival collection The Chinese Marriage Documents (1909–1997) at the University of Pittsburgh as a case study, I examine crucial cross-cultural ethics involved in the digitization process and discuss best practices to digitize and disseminate culturally sensitive archives ethically. This essay presents a reflection on the so-called auxiliary sciences, starting from the volume published by the Monumenta Germaniae Historica on the occasion of its foundation 200 years ago. The papers of the volume are integrated into the broader international debate on the prospects of medieval studies, both in relation to the „digital turn" and to the risk that the Middle Ages will become marginalized in university curricula and „irrelevant" to contemporary society and politics. The article provides an overview on the papers of Mary E. Gawthorpe and focuses on how she influenced the lives of women. Gawthorpe was a British suffragist who was an organizer of the Women's Social and Political Union from 1906 to 1912. She was involved in a number of American social and political movements, including women's suffrage and labor education. Her papers cover the period of her involvement with the militant British suffragettes as well as some of her activities in the United States.

The literary papyri found by Otto Rubensohn on January 25 and 27, 1905, were unearthed together with the archive of the Taurinus family (5th–6th c.) in a dump at Hermopolis. Herwig Maehler proposed that, due to the circumstances of their discovery, these books may have belonged to one of the family members. This hypothesis, if correct, is all the more interesting since it makes these papyri one of the few papyrological libraries with a precise historical context. In this paper, I attempt to make an overall assessment of this library, which has never been inventoried, and discuss its possible relationship with the documentary archive of the Taurini. Die Digitalisierung von Gesellschaft und Arbeit stellt neue Herausforderungen an Dokumentation, Archivierung und erneute Nutzung von Informationen und Medien durch große und kleine Einrichtungen. Zur erfolgreichen Bewältigung dieser Herausforderungen tragen Vernetzung und Qualifizierung erheblich bei. In diesen Bereichen ist nestor aktiv. Der Beitrag informiert über Geschichte, Reichweite und Angebote des Kompetenznetzwerks nestor und berichtet über aktuelle Entwicklungen während der Pandemie. Insbesondere werden die Arbeitsgruppen, Publikationen und Veranstaltungs- sowie Qualifizierungsangebote des Netzwerks vorgestellt. Der Beitrag ruft zudem zur Beteiligung im Netzwerk auf. The digitization of society and work sees institutions faced with new challenges for the documentation, archiving and re-use of information and media. Archiving is a long-standing vocation, founded on principles such as provenance, original order, truth, evidence, preservation and permanence. A far cry from the visual spectacle and movable feast of film visual effects (VFX)—a transitory and globalized industry of disposable firms, ever-advancing technologies and a roving workforce which craft digital animations and seamless effects for the big screen. In this paper we utilize the concept of “story” as a premise to bring together the seemingly different vocations of archival science and film VFX. Through an exploration of digital film production and archival practice under the context of storytelling, we aim to highlight the need for archivists to work with the VFX industry to ensure evidence of this culturally significant aspect of filmmaking and cinema discourse is preserved into the future. The article offers the biographical information of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. Flynn was an organizer of Industrial Workers of the World and a Communist party activist. She launched major strikes in the U.S., however, she was indicted and convicted. She became the first female national chair of the Communist Party, headed the Women's commission, and eventually died in Soviet Union. The collection is divided into eight series and includes 33 reels.

In his edition of Cuneiform Luwian texts, Starke categorizes the rituals of Kuwattalla into three groups. While the existence of the first two in which Šilalluḫi participates is secured, the third one is highly hypothetical. In this paper, new joins of fragments made by the author are presented, which confirm the recent arguments of Hutter against the third ritual of Starke and bear consequences for the rearrangement of the rituals of the Kuwattalla tradition. Furthermore, it is shown that the various redactions of the Great Ritual were not kept in the same archives at the city of Ḫattuša. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates members’ practices at Drug and Therapeutic Committee (DTC) meetings. It describes situated practices involving textual and other forms of ‘evidence’ considered by committee members at two DTC sites dealing with the managed entry of a single pharmaceutical product (clopidogrel). It investigates the locally situated textual activities of committees and members; issues that evidence-based medicine (EBM) programs ignore in their assumption that decision-making can, and should, be a straightforward logical process involving the reading, understanding, and evaluation of scientific data unambiguously from a text. It describes the actual usage of written textual information by committees and individuals within them, as sophisticated reflexive workplace activities. Taking an ethnomethodological orientation, this paper shows how the same clinical study can result in different activities and discussions. This is not only because of different ‘readings’ by personnel in different places, at different times, and with different local concerns, but also due to the representational formats in which the study exists as a text document and object, i.e., that ‘evidence’ does not remain uniform across various sites. Technology has a significant impact in archival institutions. The creation and need to preserve digital records require archivists to have the necessary training, and ongoing professional development. In addition, technology is embedded in many archival processes, making knowledge of technology use vital for archivists. While technology may be a challenge for archivists in terms of archival management, it also presents a useful means to support training and professional development. This paper is based on the experimental research conducted by the researchers, as instructors, in developing curriculum based on theories of andragogy for the purposes of developing intentional curriculum for professional development of archivists in digital learning environments. In this article, we will focus on the application of technology for the purposes of training archives professionals. We have explored archives training through the application of andragogy theory in online training through Louisiana State University and Mohawk College. In addition, we will review the literature relating to the use of technology to support both outreach and marketing to educate clients of archival institutions. Social media tools offer a broad means to engage clients, as these platforms already function as "community hubs for activity, featuring many users, regular updates, and active forum discussions" (Terras). Regional archival organizations across the United States have been bringing out the archives in free events designed to showcase collections in public spaces, and connect communities to local history resources. Called archives bazaars or crawls, these outreach events showcase the vibrant spectrum of archives from private collections, community organizations, municipal archives, and public and academic libraries. This short paper explores the history of these community archives events, and describes the creation, challenges and outcomes of hosting the inaugural 2017 Houston Archives Bazaar. This paper explores the way in which professional staff employed in information institutions perceive changes and different aspects of change management. The research focuses on Croatian libraries, museums and archives, as public and non-profit organizations. The influence of five background variables (institution, gender, age, level of education, and position) was examined in the analysis. The results show that professionals are only partially satisfied with the changes in their institutions. The type of institution they work in, and the position in the management structure proved to be strong predictors of differences in satisfaction ratings. Factor analysis has revealed three factors: change management mechanisms, impact of change on users and local community, and importance and necessity of change. These factors represent the underlying constructs of the professional staff's perceptions of change and change management. With respect to the background variables, employees generally have similar attitudes toward the latent factors. They are aware that change is important and that well managed changes improve effectiveness and efficiency. However, from their responses, it is clear that change management is not performed properly. Based on the extracted factors, the survey subjects are classified into four clusters. The study highlights some critical areas of change management in information institutions. In this study we investigate the implementation and challenges of accessing archives in the digital age. Through an online survey and expert interviews, data were collected from archival institutions, professional users, and civil society organizations in all Council of Europe member states. The findings reveal that digitization has had a positive impact on document accessibility, providing convenience, reducing workload, and improving user access. However, only a small portion of archival holdings have been digitized, highlighting the need for further efforts in this area. Data protection and copyright present significant obstacles, with the European General Data Protection Regulation leading to access restrictions and legal uncertainties. Preservation, interoperability, and organization of records pose challenges in the digital realm, and while artificial intelligence shows promise in automating metadata creation and identifying sensitive materials, concerns about algorithmic biases and the need for additional checks are highlighted. To enhance accessibility, user-friendly interfaces, cooperation among memory preserving institution, and outreach to new user groups are crucial, which can ensure the effective preservation and accessibility of digital collections in the digital age.
