Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type of emergency department (ED) presentations involving drugs and/or alcohol (DA) among young people. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients aged 14–25 years who presented to the ED at a tertiary hospital between 7 October and 25 November 2013. Data were collected on standardised data sheets, including whether DA was a factor in the patient's presentation. Results: In all, 713 ED presentations of patients aged 14–25 years were included in this review (mean age 20 years). Of these, 94 (13%) presentations involved DA (median blood alcohol level 0.12%; range 0.01–0.39%); among patients aged 14–17 years, 13 (8%) presentations involved DA. Patient presentations involving DA were more likely to occur overnight and at weekends, had higher Australasian Triage Scale scores and had longer ED lengths of stay. These patients were also more likely to present with aggression, because of an assault, or with mental health disorders. Conclusion: DA are involved in a substantial number of presentations of young people to the ED and are associated with an increased risk of assault and aggression. Public health strategies should target the links between DA use and mental health in young people. Research suggests this cohort of the population is more likely to present to an ED with an injury than the comparative age group not intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, and is more likely to be reviewed after hours. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal operations for clinical outcomes, safety and cost. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed of 213 elective colorectal operations (59 robotic, 154 laparoscopic), matched by surgeon and operation type. Results: No differences in age, body mass index, median American Society of Anesthesiologists score or presence of cancer were observed between the laparoscopic or robotic surgery groups. However, patients undergoing robotic colorectal surgery were more frequently male (P = 0.004) with earlier T stage tumours (P = 0.02) if cancer present. Procedures took longer in cases of robotic surgery (302 vs 130 min; P < 0.001), and patients in this group were more frequently admitted to intensive care units (P < 0.001). Overall length of stay was longer (7 vs 5 days; P = 0.03) and consumable cost was A$2728 higher per patient in the robotic surgery group. Conclusion: Robotic colorectal surgery appears to be safe compared with current laparoscopic techniques, albeit with longer procedure times and overall length of stay, more frequent intensive care admissions and higher consumables cost. Objective: The aims of the present study were to establish rates of resuscitation order documentation of patients aged ≥65 years from both psychogeriatric and general medical units and to compare patients on predictors of resuscitation status, particularly examining the effect of depression. Methods: A retrospective case note audit of psychogeriatric (n = 162) and general medical (n = 135) unit admissions within a tertiary teaching hospital was performed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine significant clinical and demographic predictors of resuscitation status. Results: Resuscitation orders were documented in more psychogeriatric (94.4%) than general medical (48.1%) files. Depression did not significantly predict resuscitation status in either group. Having undergone competency assessment significantly predicted resuscitation status for the total sample and separately for psychogeriatric and medical patients. Older age (overall sample), poorer prognosis (overall sample), living in residential care (overall sample and medical group) and self-consenting to resuscitation status (overall sample and medical group) significantly predicted resuscitation status. Conclusions: Resuscitation orders were more frequently documented on the psychogeriatric unit. Further prospective analysis is needed of how resuscitation orders are made before depression is discounted as a predictor of end-of-life decision-making. Objective: To explore end-of-life care in the ward and intensive care unit (ICU) environment in nine Australian hospitals in a retrospective observational study. Methods: In total, 1693 in-hospital deaths, 356 in ICU, were reviewed, including patient demographics, advance care plans, life-sustaining treatments, recognition of dying by clinicians and evidence of the palliative approach to patient care. Results: Most patients (n = 1430, 84%) were aged ≥60 years, with a low percentage (n = 208, 12%) having an end-of-life care plan on admission. Following admission, 82% (n = 1391) of patients were recognised as dying, but the time between recognition of dying to death was short (ICU (staying 4–48 h) median 0.34 days (first quartile (Q1), third quartile (Q3): 0.16, 0.72); Ward (staying more than 48 h) median 2.1 days (Q1, Q3: 0.96, 4.3)). Although 41% (n = 621) patients were referred for specialist palliative care, most referrals were within the last few days of life (2.3 days (0.88, 5.9)) and 62% of patients (n = 1047) experienced active intervention in their final 48 h. Conclusions: Late recognition of dying can expose patients to active interventions and minimises timely palliative care. To attain alignment to the National Consensus Statement to improve experiences of end-of-life care, a nationally coordinated approach is needed. Published evidence confirms poor access to wait-listing for kidney transplantation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians from the Northern Territory. This study aimed to identify the practical causes and recommend improvement. Pathways to wait-listing for a kidney transplant were reviewed to identify potential barriers. Processes were mapped to identify potential problem areas, provide comparison of the actual versus the ideal, identify where data needed collecting and provide clear presentation of the processes. Staff involved in the work-up of patients going for wait-listing were asked to list the barriers. Data were collected for patients from the transplant database between 1 January 2017 to 31 August 2018. Quality improvement statistical processes and charts were used to analyse and present the results. There were 102 patients in the transplant work-up process; 81.4% were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, 71.6% were progressing with the work-up, 28.4% were on-hold. Of the 29 patients on hold, 92.9% were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Causes of delays to wait-listing included: failure to attend appointments due to competing priorities and communication barriers, access and navigating complex pathways to specialist services, transport, co-morbidities requiring multiple tests and multiple specialty services, and pressures on dialysis and hospital bed capacity. In conclusion, barriers to wait-listing for kidney transplantation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are complex and can be addressed by redesigning healthcare provision, including increasing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce to provide education and patient navigation of the healthcare system and improve communication, streamlining investigations and coordinating specialist services. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability of a novel, integrated general practitioner (GP)–paediatrician model of care, aiming to reduce referrals to hospitals and improve primary care quality. Methods: A pre-post study was conducted with five general practice clinics in north-west Melbourne. Over 12 months, 49 GPs and 896 families participated in the intervention that included weekly to fortnightly paediatrician–GP co-consultation sessions at the general practice, monthly case discussions and telephone or email clinical support for GPs. GPs and families completed surveys or interviews at three time points (before the intervention, after running the model for 4 months and at the end of the implementation). Non-identifiable consultation data were extracted from general practice medical records. Results: All GPs found the model acceptable. Although not significant, there was a trend towards a lower proportion of referrals to private paediatricians after the intervention (from 34% to 20%) and emergency departments (from 19% to 12%). Outpatient clinic referrals remained steady, and then increased as the paediatrician left the clinics (31% vs 47% before and after the intervention respectively). Unnecessary prescribing of acid suppression medications decreased by 20% (from 29% to 9%). GPs reported improved confidence in paediatric care (88% vs 100% before and after the intervention respectively). Families reported increased confidence in GP care (78% vs 94% before and after the intervention respectively). Model cost estimates were A$172 above usual care per child seen in the co-consultations. Conclusions: This novel model of care is acceptable to GPs and families and may improve access and quality of paediatric care. This case study describes the development, implementation and review of a sustainable and culturally sensitive procedure for a hospital-funded discharge medicine subsidy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients registered with the Closing the Gap (CTG) program discharging from a public hospital. A 7-day fully subsidised medication supply was approved to be offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients admitted under cardiac care teams, including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery patients. Patients were offered the option of a 7-day supply free of cost to them or a full Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) supply if preferred. A general practitioner (GP) appointment was organised within 7 days of discharge to ensure patients received ongoing supply of their medications as well as timely clinical review after discharge. Over a 34-month period from September 2015 to June 2018, 535 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients were admitted to the hospital under cardiac care teams. Of these patients, 296 received a subsidised discharge medication supply with a total cost of A$6314.56 to the hospital over the trial period, with a mean cost of A$21.26 per discharge. The provision of subsidised medications through the CTG program has improved the continuity of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The culturally sensitive approach is well received and has allowed smooth transition back to the community. This site-specific and state-based funding model was found to be financially sustainable at a public hospital. As such, patients are required to either leave the hospital with no medicines or leave the hospital with medicines for which they have to pay full PBS price. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether there has been a measurable change in the dependency and complexity of patients admitted to in-patient rehabilitation in Australia between 2007 and 2016. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was used to examine in-patient rehabilitation data held in the Australasian Rehabilitation Outcomes Centre Registry Database for the period 2007–16. Epidemiological descriptive analysis was used to examine datasets for difference between four discrete years (2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016). Datasets included patient demographics, length of stay (LOS), comorbidities, complications and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM™). Results: Between 2007 and 2016, rehabilitation in-patients as a whole: (1) had a mean decrease in total admission FIM score; (2) became more complex, as evidenced by the increased proportion of particular comorbidities impacting on rehabilitation, namely cardiac and respiratory disease, dementia, diabetes and morbid obesity; and (3) had a mean decrease in total discharge FIM score. However, there was an increase in the proportion of patients discharged home from rehabilitation (from 86.5% to 92%) and decreases in onset and rehabilitation LOS of 2.2 and 2.5 days respectively. Conclusion: The dependency and complexity of patients admitted to in-patient rehabilitation in Australia has increased between 2007 and 2016. Objective: The aims of this study were to assess: (1) concordance between patient preferences stated in advance care plans (ACPs) and hospital care over the subsequent 12 months; (2) change in preferences over time; (3) justifications for discordant care; and (4) effects of ACP completion on hospital utilisation. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 198 patients with an ACP form registered with an ACP registry and tagged with a hospital unique record number. Data collected from ACP forms and hospital records comprised ACP completion and revisions, care preferences, patient characteristics and hospital care. Instances of care discordant with preferences were analysed as Type A (no ascertainable justification) and Type B (direct patient request or appropriate clinical indications). In a survivor subset, hospital utilisation was compared before and after ACP completion. Results: Mean (± s.d.) patient age was 79.5 ± 11.8 years. Patients had a mean (± s.d.) of 5.5 ± 2.5 comorbidities and 90 (46.4%) died within the 12 months after ACP completion. Most ACPs (130; 65.5%) were completed during index hospitalisation and 13 (6.5%) underwent revision, on average, 6.8 months later, all related to rescinding request for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Hospital care was fully concordant for 154 (77.8%) patients, with 39 (22.2%) receiving 60 instances of discordant care (15 (25%) Type A, 45 (75%) Type B), mostly related to surgical procedures (20; 33%) and intravenous fluids or antibiotics (26; 43%). Patients receiving discordant care had higher mortality (77% vs 45%; P < 0.001) and more rapid response team activations (34% vs 13%; P = 0.001) at 12 months than patients with concordant care. Among the 108 confirmed survivors at 12 months after ACP completion, emergency department presentations and hospital admissions per patient had decreased by ≥50% (P < 0.001) and hospital days had decreased by 25% (P = 0.042) compared with the 12 months before ACP completion. Conclusion: Most patients completing an ACP received hospital care fully concordant with their stated preferences, with few revising their preferences over time. Discordant care mostly related to justified supportive treatments or surgical procedures. Among survivors, ACP completion was associated with decreased use of hospital care. What are the implications for practitioners?: Encouraging patients with progressive chronic disease to complete an ACP reduces their risk of receiving care they do not want, reflected in decreased use of hospital care. Preferences stated in ACPs are mostly stable over time and, if changed, tend to become more conservative in terms of CPR. Conversely, preferences stated in the ACP do not, as circumstances change, bind patients or clinicians to withholding care that relieves symptoms or prevents major morbidity in the short term. INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is common in primary care, yet little has been reported of its primary care prevalence or the clinical characteristics of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). AIM: To determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and clinical characteristics of diabetes patients in primary care in the Waikato region. METHODS: Primary care data were extracted from the electronic records of 15 general practices for patients aged >20 years with current diabetes mellitus at 20 June 2017. Diabetes mellitus was defined as having a glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) of ≥50 mmol/mol (6.7%) or having being dispensed two or more anti-diabetic medications in the previous 12 months. Additional data collected included patients' ethnicity, age, sex and years since diagnosis. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 5.7% and was higher for Māori (8.6%), Asian (7.0%) and Pacific peoples (9.1%) than Europeans (5.0%; all P < 0.001). For patients with T2DM for whom current diabetes annual review data were available (n = 2227) the mean body mass index (BMI) was 32.8 ± 0.2 kg/m2, but BMI was higher in Māori, younger patients, females and patients diagnosed <2 years previously (all P < 0.001). Similarly, HbA1c levels were highest in Māori and younger patients (both P < 0.001), with 40% of patients overall having a HbA1c of ≤53 mmol/mol (7.0%). Approximately 70% of all patients had at least one measure of hypertension (systolic ≥130 or diastolic ≥80 mmHg), or dyslipidaemia. More than 85% of patients had completed a recent retinal screen and foot check. DISCUSSION: We found that management of T2DM was suboptimal, with measures for many patients not meeting clinical targets. Objective. This study investigated antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) guideline adherence and the cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection rate in two major Australian public teaching hospitals. Methods. In a retrospective observational study, the medical records of patients who underwent CIED procedures between January and December 2017 were reviewed (Hospital A, n = 400 procedures; Hospital B, n = 198 procedures). Adherence to AP guidelines was assessed regarding drug, dose, timing, route and frequency. Infection was identified using follow-up documentation. Results. AP was administered in 582 of 598 procedures (97.3%). Full guideline adherence was observed in 33.9% of procedures (203/598) and differed significantly between Hospitals A and B (47.3% vs 7.1%, respectively; P, 0.001). Common reasons for non-adherence were the timing of administration (42.3% vs 60.6% non-adherent in Hospitals A and B, respectively; P, 0.001) and repeat dosing (19.3% vs 78.8% non-adherent in Hospitals A and B, respectively; P, 0.001). Twenty infections were identified over 626.6 patient-years of follow-up (mean (-s.d.) follow-up 1.0 ± 0.3 years). The infection rate was 3.19 per 100 patient-years (P = 0.99 between hospitals). Two devices were removed due to infection; no patients died from CIED infection. Conclusions. Although the rate of serious CIED infection was low, there was evidence of highly variable and suboptimal antibiotic use, and potential overuse of AP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To examine what new health information is identified at a patient's most recent 75þHA compared with their standard GP consultations in the prior 24 months. Methods. Parameters measured included newly identified chronic conditions, new management for previously diagnosed chronic conditions, medication management, referrals, vaccinations, and positive test results for the monitoring of previously diagnosed chronic conditions. A retrospective patient record study collecting data from two GP clinics in metropolitan and regional Victoria was undertaken. A total of 195 75þHA recipients were included. Results. No significant difference was found in the number of new chronic conditions recorded at patients' most recent 75þHA compared with standard GP consultations in the prior 24 months. However, significant differences in the types of conditions were noted, with 75þHAs significantly more likely to record elevated lipids (P, 0.001), vitamin D deficiencies (P = 0.004), eye/vision-related (P = 0.011), diabetes (P = 0.019), and hearing conditions (P = 0.045) compared with standard GP consultations. Significantly more referrals (P, 0.001) and new management for previously diagnosed conditions (P=0.009) occurred at 75þHAthan at standard GP consultations. Patients who were receiving their first 75þHAwere significantly more likely to receive vaccinations than those receiving a subsequent 75þHA(P=0.022). The aim of this case study was to share lessons learned regarding strategies likely to increase healthcare service efficiency. Following quality assurance review of statewide Hospital in the Home (HITH) average length of stay (ALOS) and readmission data, Queensland's Department of Health observed that for some of the highest volume diagnoses seen in Queensland's HITH services in 2017, services that used a public-private partnership (PPP) model of care achieved a shorter ALOS than services using a traditional public model of care without demonstrably poorer patient outcomes. To understand the reasons for the differences in ALOS, ALOS and readmission data from 2017 for 10 highvolume diagnoses were retrospectively compared for five HITH services. Two of the services used a PPP and three used a public HITH model of care. Additional data were collected to determine similarities and points of difference regarding how the services operated in 2017. Hospitals that used a PPP HITH model of care achieved shorter ALOS for eight of the 10 diagnoses, with the difference ranging from 0.94 to 5.98 days. Differences between how the PPP and public HITH services operated in 2017 were identified. The findings suggest that the use of governance strategies, criteria-led discharge and financial incentives is likely to support safe shorter lengths of stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. The aims of this study were to assess the effects of screening through BreastScreen NSW on the stage of cancer at diagnosis, and differences in cancer stage at diagnosis according to sociodemographic factors. Methods. Using linked BreastScreen NSW screening attendance records and NSW Cancer Registry data, the effects of screening participation and sociodemographic characteristics on stage at diagnosis were investigated using Kruskal- Wallis analysis of variance or the Mann-Whitney U-test for the 2002-13 diagnostic period. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate predictors of stage at diagnosis. Results. The association between BreastScreen NSW participation and earlier stage at diagnosis was strongest when the last screening episode occurred within 24 months of the cancer diagnosis, with an odds ratio of localised versus nonlocalised cancer of 1.61 (95% confidence interval 1.51-1.72). Women aged 70 years, Aboriginal women, residents of major cities and women living in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage were more likely to have distant than non-distant stage at diagnosis. A trend towards more distant stage in more recent diagnostic years was evident after adjusting for screening participation. Conclusions. The strongest and most consistent predictor of earlier stage at diagnosis was BreastScreen NSW participation. Continued efforts to increase screening participation are important to achieve earlier stage at diagnosis, particularly for sociodemographic groups with more advanced disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Pricing for safety and quality was introduced into Australian hospitals using a defined list of hospitalacquired complications (HACs). Medication-related HACs include drug-related respiratory complications (DRRC), haemorrhagic disorder due to circulating anticoagulants (HDDCA) and hypoglycaemia. The aim of this study was to determine the probability, severity and preventability of medication-related HACs, common contributory medications and themes, and whether medication-related HACs are a suitable data source to inform risk associated with medicines use. Methods. Medical notes were reviewed retrospectively for all patients discharged from a tertiary referral metropolitan hospital between 1 July and 31 December 2018 who were flagged as experiencing a medication-related HAC. Naranjo, Hartwig's and Schumock and Thornton tools were used to assess the probability, severity and preventability of medication-related HACs. Results. Over the 6-month period, 88 patients experienced a medication-related HAC. An HAC was not identified in five (5.7%) patient charts. The most common HAC was hypoglycaemia (n = 59; 67%), followed by HDDCA (n = 23; 26%) and DRRC (n = 6; 7%). Fifteen patients (17%) flagged with a hypoglycaemia HAC were not on a medicine associated with hypoglycaemia. Overall, 6% (n=4) of HACs were severe, 72% (n=49) were moderate and 22% (n=15) were mild. Where theHACand causal medication(s) were identified (n=68), over half were probable (51.5%, n=35) and 44.1% (n = 30) were possible causes of the adverse drug reaction; only two (2.9%) were definite causes. None of the DRRC HACs was preventable. Over half the HDDCA HACs (52.2%; n = 12) and almost half the hypoglycaemia HACs (46.2%; n=18) were not preventable. Common themes included appropriate anticoagulant agent, dose and monitoring, as well as periprocedural hypoglycaemic management, which considers oral intake and comorbidities. Conclusion. Not all patients who experience medication-related HACs were on causative medications. Of those who were, medications were probable causal agents in over 50% of cases. Objective. This study assessed the availability and quality of advance care planning (ACP) documentation among older residential aged care facility (RACF) residents who presented to the emergency department (ED). Methods. A prospective review of the medical records of RACF residents aged 75 years who presented to the ED from May to June 2018 was conducted. Availability of ACP was determined based on the presence of an ACP document inclusive of an advance care directive (ACD) in the medical record. The quality of ACP documentation was determined based on the presence of nine key components. Results. In all, 48.8% of patients presented to the ED with either ACP or an ACD. However, only a mean total of 3.8 (out of 9) ACP components were documented in these documents. Conclusions. Just under half (48.8%) of RACF residents presented to the ED with ACP documentation. INTRODUCTION: Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by the rubeola virus. It can result in ocular complications such as conjunctivitis and keratitis, which will be encountered in general practice. Cases usually resolve without sequelae, but may progress to corneal perforation if left untreated. AIM: We present two cases of rubeola keratitis secondary to measles infection. METHODS: This report is about a retrospective review of data from two patients who presented to the eye department with rubeola keratitis in the midst of the recent measles outbreak in New Zealand. RESULTS: Both patients presented with decreased visual acuity approximately 2 weeks after being diagnosed with measles. One of them was unvaccinated, whereas the other had no documentation of previous vaccination. Both were healthy and immunocompetent individuals. There was no evidence of corneal perforation or retinopathy on examination. Both patients regained their baseline visual acuity after treatment with fluorometholone eye drops. DISCUSSION: Despite the existence of a safe and effective vaccine, there were more than 2000 cases of measles in the recent outbreak in New Zealand. The lack of vaccination is one of the primary causes of rubeola keratitis. These cases highlight the effects of measles infection from an ophthalmology perspective and reinforce the paramount importance of getting vaccinated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: Internationally, the inclusion of pharmacists into general practice as clinical pharmacy facilitators has improved patient outcomes. However, clinical pharmacists are relatively new to southern New Zealand general practices and their range of services has not been studied. AIMS: To describe the implementation of clinical pharmacist services in general practices in the Southern region; to examine the tasks conducted by clinical pharmacy facilitators; and to determine the characteristics of patients who access this service. METHODS: The establishment and development of the clinical pharmacy facilitator role was determined by documentation held within the local Primary Health Organisation. The activities performed by clinical pharmacy facilitators were collected from patient medical records for the period 31 March 2015 to 31 March 2018. To describe the characteristics of patients receiving these services, a retrospective case note review of patients seen by the facilitators was conducted. RESULTS: The clinical pharmacy facilitator role was initiated with three pharmacists in three geographical locations across the region. Within 18 months, the number of facilitators was increased to eight. As a result of collaboration with the general practice team, 42% of referrals came from general practitioners directly. Overall, 2621 medicine-related problems were identified in 2195 patients. Dosage adjustment was the most common recommendation made by pharmacy facilitators. They consulted mostly older patients and patients taking five or more medicines. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing worldwide and there is a need to identify communities with a high-risk profile and to develop appropriate primary care interventions. This study aimed to predict future T2D risk and identify community-level geographic variations using general practices data. The Australian T2D risk assessment (AUSDRISK) tool was used to calculate the individual T2D risk scores using 55 693 clinical records from 16 general practices in west Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. Spatial clusters and potential 'hotspots' of T2D risk were examined using Local Moran's I and the Getis-Ord Gi* techniques. Further, the correlation between T2D risk and the socioeconomic status of communities were mapped. Individual risk scores were categorised into three groups: low risk (34.0% of participants), moderate risk (35.2% of participants) and high risk (30.8% of participants). Spatial analysis showed heterogeneity in T2D risk across communities, with significant clusters in the central part of the study area. These study results suggest that routinely collected data from general practices offer a rich source of data that may be a useful and efficient approach for identifying T2D hotspots across communities. There is now evidence linking antibiotic burden in infancy and subsequent risk factors for cardiometabolic disease. In this study we assessed the metabolic health of a community-based cohort of Aboriginal Australians aged 15–25 years and retrospectively examined their early childhood antibiotic burden to identify a possible link between the two. Metabolic health data were extracted from electronic files of 433 participants in prior Young Persons Checks between 2013 and 2016. More than one-third were overweight or obese. Males had more metabolic syndrome than females (20.6% vs 10%; P = 0.03). Metabolic syndrome was twice as common in the 20- to 25-year age group than in the 15- to 19-year age group (19.8% vs 9.7%; P < 0.001). A subsequent medical chart review focused on childhood infections and the antibiotic burden of participants in the Young Persons Check from birth to 15 years of age. Nearly 75% were prescribed antibiotics during their first 2 years of life and 29% were exposed four or more times. Childhood antibiotic burden decreased with age. This population of Aboriginal adolescents and young adults has high rates of antibiotic exposure in childhood and metabolic abnormalities. With the increasing cost of prepackaged research equipment and restrictions on research budgets, there is a growing need for inexpensive solutions for data collection in laboratory and small enclosures across a range of research topics investigating responses of animals to experimental parameters. We present here a low-cost, modular passive infrared sensor and data-logging system for use in experiments evaluating animal activity and behaviour, easily assembled in a laboratory setting. This system comprises accessible kit-based components purchased from popular electronics suppliers. We present the hardware configuration, software coding, build of materials, circuit diagram and a sample dataset demonstrating that the system collects reliable data that is easily downloaded either through any terminal program, directly from the unit or via an SD card. It is hoped that this 'freeware' approach to activity-monitoring equipment will enable laboratory and enclosure-based research to be undertaken more cost-effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
