The paper deals with current EU documents giving outlines on the type of university that the European Union would like to have. European universities founded in different times follow different cultural and societal traditions. Present differences in academic programmes and degrees are likely to hinder the flee movement of EU citizens and their ability to find employment in another EU country. Also, European universities can hardly compete with the American in the quality of programmes offered and in their attractiveness to students. The Bologna Declaration and the following documents on the universities in Europe determine the basic principles upon which the reform of universities should be based. The paper attempts to show the implications the Bologna process will have for the LIS study programme at the University of Zagreb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
