Some professional development activities (for example, individual development plans, ethics case studies, learning to give scientific presentations) could be done on Zoom much the same as in person, but two types required big changes. [...]pre-pandemic, career/graduate school exploration was addressed with live panels of professionals and graduate students, and informal discussion of career paths through lab social activities;both were impossible during the pandemic. Writing and reading the reflections helped students articulate their values (e.g., the role of family or environmental impact in choosing a career;how work contributes to communities) and questions (e.g., whether to consider an MS or PhD);these documents also provided details about mentees that helped mentors with advising and providing references.
