Many forest cover maps have been generated by using optical and/or microwave images, but these forest cover maps have large area and spatial discrepancies. To date, few studies have assessed forest cover maps in terms of two biophysical parameters used in forest definition: canopy height and canopy coverage. We generated annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and evergreen forest cover maps from 2000 to 2021 in the Brazilian Amazon using the images from the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar and the time series images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, using the forest definition of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (>5 m tree height and >10 % canopy coverage) as the reference. We used the canopy height and canopy coverage datasets from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System during 2003–2007 to assess annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and annual evergreen forest cover maps from 2003 to 2007, and the results show high accuracy of these forest cover and evergreen forest cover maps. Site-level observations have shown pervasive cold season CO 2 release across Arctic and boreal ecosystems, impacting annual carbon budgets. Still, the seasonality of CO 2 emissions are poorly quantified across much of the high latitudes due to the sparse coverage of site-level observations. Space-based observations provide the opportunity to fill some observational gaps for studying these high-latitude ecosystems, particularly across poorly sampled regions of Eurasia. Here, we show that data-driven net ecosystem exchange (NEE) from atmospheric CO 2 observations implies strong summer uptake followed by strong autumn release of CO 2 over the entire cold northeastern region of Eurasia during the 2015–2019 study period. Combining data-driven NEE with satellite-based estimates of gross primary production (GPP), we show that this seasonality implies less summer heterotrophic respiration (Rh) and greater autumn Rh than would be expected given an exponential relationship between respiration and surface temperature. Furthermore, we show that this seasonality of NEE and Rh over northeastern Eurasia is not captured by the TRENDY v8 ensemble of dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs), which estimate that 47 %–57 % (interquartile range) of annual Rh occurs during August–April, while the data-driven estimates suggest 59 %–76 % of annual Rh occurs over this period. We explain this seasonal shift in Rh by respiration from soils at depth during the zero-curtain period, when sub-surface soils remain unfrozen up to several months after the surface has frozen. Additional impacts of physical processes related to freeze–thaw dynamics may contribute to the seasonality of Rh. This study confirms a significant and spatially extensive early cold season CO 2 efflux in the permafrost-rich region of northeast Eurasia and suggests that autumn Rh from subsurface soils in the northern high latitudes is not well captured by current DGVMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The retrieval of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from space is a relatively new advance in Earth observation science, having only become feasible within the last decade. Interest in SIF data has grown exponentially, and the retrieval of SIF and the provision of SIF data products has become an important and formal component of spaceborne Earth observation missions. Here, we describe the global Level 2 SIF Lite data products for the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2), and Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) platforms, which are provided for each platform in daily netCDF files (Frankenberg, 2022, 10.22002/D1.8771; OCO-2 Science Team et al., 2020, 10.5067/XO2LBBNPO010; OCO-3 Science Team et al., 2020, 10.5067/NOD1DPPBCXSO). We also outline the methods used to retrieve SIF and estimate uncertainty, describe all the data fields, and provide users with the background information necessary for the proper use and interpretation of the data, such as considerations of retrieval noise, sun sensor geometry, the indirect relationship between SIF and photosynthesis, and differences among the three platforms and their respective data products. OCO-2 and OCO-3 have the highest spatial resolution of spaceborne SIF retrievals to date, and the target and snapshot area mode observation modes of OCO-2 and OCO-3 are unique. These modes provide hundreds to thousands of SIF retrievals at biologically diverse global target sites during a single overpass, and provide an opportunity to better inform our understanding of canopy-scale vegetation SIF emission across biomes. At the leaf level, stomata control the exchange of water and carbon across the air–leaf interface. Stomatal conductance is typically modeled empirically, based on environmental conditions at the leaf surface. Recently developed stomatal optimization models show great skills at predicting carbon and water fluxes at both the leaf and tree levels. However, how well the optimization models perform at larger scales has not been extensively evaluated. Furthermore, stomatal models are often used with simple single-leaf representations of canopy radiative transfer (RT), such as big-leaf models. Nevertheless, the single-leaf canopy RT schemes do not have the capability to model optical properties of the leaves nor the entire canopy. As a result, they are unable to directly link canopy optical properties with light distribution within the canopy to remote sensing data observed from afar. Here, we incorporated one optimization-based and two empirical stomatal models with a comprehensive RT model in the land component of a new Earth system model within CliMA, the Climate Modelling Alliance. The model allowed us to simultaneously simulate carbon and water fluxes as well as leaf and canopy reflectance and fluorescence spectra. We tested our model by comparing our modeled carbon and water fluxes and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to two flux tower observations (a gymnosperm forest and an angiosperm forest) and satellite SIF retrievals, respectively. All three stomatal models quantitatively predicted the carbon and water fluxes for both forests. The optimization model, in particular, showed increased skill in predicting the water flux given the lower error (ca. 14.2 % and 21.8 % improvement for the gymnosperm and angiosperm forests, respectively) and better 1:1 comparison (slope increases from ca. 0.34 to 0.91 for the gymnosperm forest and from ca. 0.38 to 0.62 for the angiosperm forest). Our model also predicted the SIF yield, quantitatively reproducing seasonal cycles for both forests. We found that using stomatal optimization with a comprehensive RT model showed high accuracy in simulating land surface processes. The ever-increasing number of regional and global datasets of terrestrial plants, such as leaf area index and chlorophyll contents, will help parameterize the land model and improve future Earth system modeling in general.
