Abstract

The bacterial transposon Tn7 has been found to recognize transposition target structures associated with DNA replication. Tn7 transposition directed by the transposon-encoded DNA-binding protein TnsE occurs in one orientation relative to chromosomal DNA replication. Mutant TnsE proteins that make higher levels of transposition possible bind DNA better than the wild-type protein. In Escherichia coli, the pattern of TnsE-mediated insertion events around the chromosome sheds some light on how DNA replication forks go forward.

Abstract

Intron positions were compared in conserved regions of 3479 orthologous gene pairs from Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium yoelii, which diverged greater than or equal to 100 million years ago. The implied intron loss and gain rates are much lower than estimated for nematodes, arthropods, fungi, and plants, and are comparable only with rates in vertebrates.
