The aim of this study was to carry out a retrospective multicentre study comparing the morphological outcome of 8 techniques used for the management of sagittal synostosis versus a large cohort of control patients. Computed tomographic (CT) images were obtained from children CT-scanned for non-craniosynostosis related events (n = 241) and SS patients at preoperative and postoperative follow-up stages (n = 101). No significant difference in morphological outcomes was observed between the techniques considered in this study. However, the majority of techniques showed a tendency for relapse. Further, the more invasive procedures at older ages seem to lead to larger intracranial volume compared to less invasive techniques at younger ages. 'Bullough lesions', also referred to as protuberant fibro-osseous lesions (PFOL), are rare temporal bone lesions initially described in 1999. Since only 12 cases have been reported, several key issues, such as their origin and recommended management strategies, remain unresolved. This article reports the largest cohort included in the literature to date, comprising four patients with PFOL. PFOL appears to be characterized by female and right-side predominance. These lesions were consistently located regarding the mastoid, generally diagnosed in early adulthood, without functional symptoms, and were always fibro-osseous. Invasive/malignant features were not found on imaging or histology. The main differential diagnosis was malignant low-grade parosteal osteosarcoma. Clinical examination and computed tomography images provided strong elements supporting the diagnosis of PFOL. Massive swelling of the tongue can occur after posterior fossa and craniofacial surgery. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the occurrence of such severe postoperative macroglossia, but this phenomenon is still poorly understood. Severe postoperative macroglossia can be a life-threatening condition due to upper airway obstruction. Three cases of severe postoperative macroglossia that occurred after cervical spine, craniofacial, and posterior fossa surgical procedures are reported here. These cases required specialized maxillofacial management and a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit. Causal factors involved in this condition are reported, in order to highlight appropriate prevention and treatment options adapted to the management of paediatric patients. The first step in cleft lip repair is the precise positioning of anatomical landmarks and tracing of the incisions on the patient's lip at the beginning of the procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate progress made in learning cleft lip repair tracing using a quantitative assessment of learning curves: LC-CUSUM (learning curve - cumulative sum). Eight surgical residents were enrolled and asked to trace lip repair incisions on five cases of unilateral left cleft lip over 5 consecutive weeks. Results were compared to a reference tracing based on the positioning of nine anatomical landmarks and assessed using LC-CUSUM. Competence was defined as the accurate positioning of the nine landmarks (less than 1.4mm deviation from the reference positions, with an accepted 15% failure rate). After five tracing sessions, competence was not achieved evenly for all trainees, or for all landmarks, underlining differences in inter-individual learning ability even with similar training. However, despite an initial marked lack of theoretical and practical training in lip repair techniques, repeated drawings of cleft lip incisions allowed a satisfactory level of competence to be reached for most landmarks and most trainees. Nevertheless it was found that not all landmarks are understood by students with similar ease, and that landmark positioning reveals significant inter-individual differences. The patency of the naso-frontal duct is a key issue in the surgical management of chronic frontal sinusitis. Most of the current operative techniques only provide access to the paramedian portions of the frontal sinus. A canalization approach that allows a functional frontal sinus to be maintained while providing good access to the most lateral areas of the sinus is described herein. Two cases of severe post-traumatic frontal sinusitis, operated on successfully by canalization method based on the conservation of the frontal sinus and the maintenance of the patency of the naso-frontal duct, using both open and endonasal approaches, are reported. One patient was followed-up for 8 years and the other for 7 months. Canalization requires validation in a larger series. This approach provides an alternative to both cranialization and strictly endoscopic methods in lateralized frontal sinus retentions and allows mucocele to be avoided., (Copyright © 2016 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons must be aware of the potentially life-threatening complications of dental extractions in patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia because of their high prevalence of pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas. A 12-year-old girl with an otherwise typical Marfan syndrome (Ghent criteria fulfilled) presented with highly unusual oral manifestations consisting of supernumerary teeth and severe dental crowding. Pathological examination of the supernumerary teeth revealed an elevated number of pulpoliths. No mutation in the FBN1, TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 genes was identified despite exhaustive screening, suggesting that another gene defect could explain this association of marfanoid features with dental abnormalities.

Two Russian brothers presented with recurring benign facial bone tumors and progressive limb bowing. The association of fibro-osseous jawbone lesions and long-bone bowing with cortical thickening suggested the diagnosis of gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia, in the absence of arguments in favor of fibrous dysplasia. Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia is a rare autonomic dominant syndrome due to a mutation of the TMEM16E gene. The extreme and recurring phenotype of these two patients illustrates the variable expressivity of this disease. The Central Institute for Stomatology and Maxillo-facial Surgery in Moscow is one the main centers for the treatment of pediatric head and neck tumors in the territory of the former Soviet Union. A series of 33 patients presenting with cherubism (24 children and 9 of their parents) is presented. The authors discuss the atypical clinical presentations, the relevant associated anomalies and the different treatment strategies. They report the first case of cherubism associated with gingival hypertrophy without neurological signs.
