Abstract

The article reports on the increasing number of refugees from Burundi due to violence committed by the militia in 2016. The militia hunted down opponents of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Street protests and antipresidential armed gangs emerged after Nkurunziza declared that he would run for a third term despite a constitutional two-term limit. The government has closed down independent domestic media and has denied visas to foreign journalists.
