The introduction first goes back on Jeremy Bentham’s historical scheme to highlight lesser-known traits and show how it was not limited to carceral applications, a versatility which has been reflected in literature. It then moves on to Foucault’s chapter on panopticism in Discipline and Punish, foregrounding its most influential aspects as well as others which are often overlooked. The third part focuses on the reception of Foucault’s panopticism in literary criticism, from the seminal studies of D.A. Miller and John Bender to contemporary times. The fourth part deals with the influence of panopticism within the field of surveillance studies, as well as the input offered by literature for these discussions. The introduction then presents the structure of the issue and offers a summary of each of the five articles and of the final interview. L’introduction revient tout d’abord sur le projet historique de Jeremy Bentham afin d’en faire ressortir des traits parfois méconnus, et notamment le fait qu’il n’était pas limité au domaine carcéral, témoignant d’une souplesse dont s’est saisie la littérature. La partie suivante porte sur le chapitre que Foucault consacre au panoptisme dans Surveiller et punir afin d’en dégager les aspects qui se sont avérés influents mais aussi d’autres qui ont été négligés. La troisième partie retrace la réception du panoptisme de Foucault dans la critique littéraire, partant des études fondatrices proposées par D.A. Miller et John Bender pour arriver à la critique contemporaine. La quatrième partie traite de l’influence du panoptisme dans le champ des surveillance studies, ainsi que de l’apport de la littérature à ces questions. Enfin, la structure du numéro est présentée et un résumé de chacun des cinq articles, ainsi que de l’entretien final, est proposé.

La question des liens de Michel Foucault et de l’utilitarisme agite les esprits depuis la publication de l’ouvrage de Foucault, Surveiller et punir (1975), où il consacre un chapitre à ce qu’il nomme le panoptisme. La récente publication des cours au Collège de France, et plus particulièrement de la Naissance de la biopolitique (2004), a permis de relire la relation de Foucault à l’utilitarisme classique à la lumière de ses derniers écrits. La vie et l’œuvre de Foucault dévoilent un positionnement semblable à celui des utilitaristes classiques. La question de l’utilitarisme de Foucault apparaît pertinente, bien qu’elle n’ait pas été soulevée jusqu’à présent. La Revue d’études benthamiennes, avec son expertise sur les questions utilitaristes et son intérêt marqué pour Foucault, depuis la première heure, se propose d’être le lieu de rencontre de la pensée utilitariste et foucaldienne. In the 1970s, with the publication of Discipline and Punish, and with the development of his concept of discipline, Foucault put Bentham back on the map of academic study. However, Bentham scholars have not been thankful for Foucault’s interest, which has contributed to present Bentham in the shape of a disciplinary freak, to the exclusion of any other more ‘progressive’ aspects of his thought. The last decade has witnessed a remarkable reappraisal of Foucault’s misjudged strategic reading, thanks to the editions of the Collected Works, to the research of the Centre Bentham, and to the publications of Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France, which display a much more subtle understanding of Bentham’s theory. Throughout his life and within his work, Foucault’s political struggles and his philosophical studies raise the issue of his relationship with classical utilitarianism. With its expertise on utilitarianism and its marked interest in Foucault, the Revue d’études benthamienne is the first to offer a special issue on this relationship.
