The article presents a discussion of managing water allocations in Canada, adapted from the report "Going with the Flow? Evolving water allocations and the potential and limits of water market in Canada," by Oliver M. Brandes and colleagues.

The article presents a study which examines the transfer of water rights in Canada. It presents a discussion on various topics including using the water market as a response to water scarcity, water rights, and how to deal with scarcity through water rights transfers and the market. Further information on the results of the study is presented.

The article provides information on the ecological governance and sustainable water management in Canada. Even as one of the few relatively water- rich nations of the world, threats to Canada's freshwater resources are mounting. Earlier, water was managed as a virtually limitless resource; now jurisdictions across the nation face a new reality where water limits are increasingly obvious. In order to resolve these problems one requires a shift from supply-side management toward a more holistic and sustainable approach to water management. In Canada, water policies and institutions at all levels of government define the rules of water development allocation and use. The case studies and practical examples presented in this article reveal models that can be implemented across Canada, demonstrating that institutional reform towards water sustainability and ecological governance are attainable goals. It has been assessed that the first step is to develop an enabling institutional environment where ecosystem health and social sustainability are fundamental to a long-term, integrated and comprehensive approach to water management in Canada.
