This paper presents a mesoscopic evaluation of the shear resistance evolution of geogrid–aggregate interfaces subjected to direct shear loading. A three-dimensional discrete element method model was developed based on experimental data. The tensile response of geogrid were simulated through a series of calibration tests. Aggregate with complex particle shapes were simulated to accurately capture the interlocking effect among aggregates based on the real particle surface. The individual shear resistance components were quantified based on particle displacement field and contact distribution characteristics. The influences of aperture–aggregate size ratio and geogrid stiffness on the shear resistance components are discussed. The results indicate that the peak value of shear resistance component follows a descending order from frictional resistance of aggregate, to passive resistance of transverse rib, and to geogrid–aggregate interface frictional resistance. During the shear process, the frictional resistance of aggregate becomes active first, followed by the geogrid–aggregate interface frictional resistance, and then the development of passive resistance of transverse ribs starts with a certain lag. Optimizing the geogrid–aggregate size ratio and utilizing geogrids with higher rib stiffness could enhance the passive resistance of transverse ribs but would not significantly affect the geogrid–aggregate interface frictional resistance and frictional resistance of aggregate. Three-dimensional cellular geoinclusions (e.g., geocells, scrap tires) offer all-around confinement to the granular infill materials, thus improving their strength and stiffness. The accurate evaluation of extra confinement offered by these geoinclusions is essential for predicting their performance in the field. The existing models to evaluate the additional confinement are based on either a plane-strain or axisymmetric stress state. However, these geoinclusions are more likely to be subjected to the three-dimensional stresses in actual practice. This note proposes a semi-empirical model to evaluate the additional confinement provided by cellular geoinclusions under the three-dimensional stress state. The proposed model is successfully validated against the experimental data. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the influence of input parameters on additional confinement. Results reveal that the simplification of the three-dimensional stress state into axisymmetric or plane-strain condition has resulted in inaccurate and unreliable results. The extra confinement offered by the geoinclusion shows substantial variation along the intermediate and minor principal stress directions depending on the intermediate principal stress, infill soil, and geoinclusion properties. The magnitude of additional confinement increases with an increase in the geoinclusion modulus. This study presents a full-scale model investigation on variations of soil stress in a geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported track bed at various water levels and loading cycles, with four testing procedures: water level rising, cyclic loading at high water level, water level lowering, and cyclic loading at low water level. The soil arching effect was revealed, characterized by higher stress above the pile cap. With the water level rising and loading cycles increasing at high water level, this effect becomes more pronounced, until a peak value of dynamic stress concentration ratio is reached. The stable state of soil arching is obtained earlier near the crown of soil arching, but this arching effect develops more significantly at the foot of soil arching. With the water level lowering and loading at low water level, the soil arching effect remains steady, with slightly changed dynamic stresses in the track bed. The geogrid shows a significant impact on the load transfer mechanism for the quasi-static stress: the quasi-static pile-cap stress presents higher values below the geogrid, whereas the opposite trend is observed for the water-bag (subsoil) area. Surface fault ruptures are particularly damaging to buildings, lifelines, and bridges located across or adjacent to active faults. These structures should be designed in consideration of surface fault rupture hazards or strategies should be adopted to protect the structures from fault-induced damage. Geotechnical mitigation strategies such as diversion of the fault rupture away from the structure and diffusion of the rupture over a wide zone are possible strategies. The effectiveness of these geotechnical mitigation measures for reverse faulting on shallow embedded foundations was investigated using a series of centrifuge tests. These measures included excavation of a vertical trench adjacent to the foundation and installation of geogrid layers beneath the foundation. The trench was shown to be effective for a range of foundation positions depending on the magnitude of the fault offset, dip angle of the fault, depth of the trench, embedment depth of the foundation, and the number of trenches used. The geogrid layers prevented a distinct fault rupture from reaching the surface and spread fault displacement over a wider zone, but were unable to mitigate the surface fault rupture hazard for shallow embedded foundations. This study evaluated the optimum location of a reinforcement layer to maximize the efficiency of the reinforcement inclusion in an unpaved road section. The analyses are used to investigate the optimum location of the reinforcement layer within the aggregate base course (ABC) layer, and provide a possible reason for the improvement in performance. A series of three-dimensional finite element method analyses was performed, and the strain and stress response of a reinforced unpaved road section with two different ABC thicknesses was evaluated. The analyses were conducted under cyclic loading with three different radii of the circular loaded area. The embedded depth of reinforcement was varied within the ABC layer. Results indicate that regardless of ABC layer thickness, the surface deformation is minimized when the reinforcement is embedded at a depth equal to half of the radius of the loaded area ( D = 0.5 r). A higher tension force is mobilized in the reinforcement element when it is placed at D = 0.5 r. It is also shown that the required thickness of ABC is reduced when the reinforcement layer is implemented at the depth at which the maximum vertical strain occurs. Depending on the thickness of the ABC layer, the finite element analysis results indicate that the reinforcement layer could be ineffectual if it is placed at the interface between the ABC and the subgrade layer as is traditionally the case. The pullout resistance of reinforcement, such as geogrids in mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, includes the skin friction between the soil and solid geogrid surfaces. It also includes the bearing resistance against the transverse ribs, which has a greater influence on the production of pullout resistance. Taking the current limitations involved in producing woven polyester geogrids into consideration (i.e., the limited thickness of the transverse ribs), the amount of bearing resistance developed in front of transverse ribs is limited in the pullout mechanism. Thus, along with introducing an innovative and applied system, this research has endeavoured to demonstrate the effective performance of this new system in increasing the passive resistance - and thereby the pullout resistance - of standard geogrids. This new system, which is formed by adding steel transverse elements (a set of steel equal angles) to the ordinary polyester geogrids by means of nuts and bolts, is called an anchored geogrid (AG). The experimental results show that a spacing-to-height ratio of transversal elements equal to 5 gives the maximum pullout resistance for a polyester AG system in sandy soil used in the study. With an optimum arrangement, this system is capable of increasing the pullout resistance of the ordinary geogrid system by 65%. In addition, based on the plasticity solution, the pullout bearing failure mechanisms of a single isolated transverse element in the polyester AG system depend on overburden pressures. The paper presents the numerical modelling details using the finite difference method (FDM) to simulate the performance of a well-instrumented geogrid-reinforced incremental concrete panel soil retaining wall. Two different constitutive models were investigated for the backfill soil (linear elastic-plastic model and nonlinear elastic-plastic model). Both constant stiffness and strain-dependent secant stiffness models were used for the reinforcement elements. The paper provides valuable lessons to modellers to simulate the performance of this type of earth retaining structure. For example, parametric investigation of the effect of a constant Young's modulus ranging from 40 to 120 MPa for the linear-elastic Mohr-Coulomb model had only minor influence on the wall facing displacements and reinforcement loads. However, the choice of magnitude of transient compaction pressure near the facing can result in large differences in facing displacements. The paper also demonstrates that the method of construction including the location, sequence, and stiffness of the temporary supports used to construct the wall plays an important role on measured and predicted wall performance. Biaxial geogrid in current research is oversimplified, and the three-dimensional orthotropic nature of the biaxial geogrid has not been fully understood in numerical investigations. A comparative study on three modeling approaches for the biaxial geogrid is presented in this paper, including the isotropic membrane model, the orthotropic membrane model, and the truss element model. It shows that the orthotropic membrane model yields practically identical results of the maximum geogrid tension when compared with the truss element model, whereas the isotropic membrane model tends to yield values that are approximately 33% larger. A parametric study shows that the pile spacing has the strongest influence on the maximum geogrid tension. The comparison of four analytical methods with the orthotropic membrane model shows that the British standard (BS) 8006 (published in 2010) and EBGEO (published in 2011) methods greatly overestimate the geogrid tension, while the method presented by Zhuang et al. Due to its complex honeycomb structure, the numerical modeling of the geocell has always been a big challenge. Generally, the equivalent composite approach is used to model the geocells. In the equivalent composite approach, the geocell-soil composite is treated as the soil layer with improved strength and stiffness values. Though this approach is very simple, it is unrealistic to model the geocells as the soil layer. This paper presents a more realistic approach of modeling the geocells in three-dimensional (3D) framework by considering the actual curvature of the geocell pocket. A square footing resting on geocell reinforced soft clay bed was modeled using the 'fast Lagrangian analysis of continua in 3D' (FLAC3D) finite difference package. Three different material models, namely modified Cam-clay, Mohr-Coulomb, and linear elastic were used to simulate the behaviour of foundation soil, infill soil and the geocell, respectively. It was found that the geocells distribute the load laterally to the wider area below the footing as compared to the unreinforced case. More than 50% reduction in the stress was observed in the clay bed in the presence of geocells. In addition to geocells, two other cases, namely, only geogrid and geocell with additional basal geogrid cases were also simulated. The numerical model was systematically validated with the results of the physical model tests. This paper investigates the influence of geosynthetic encasement on the performance of stone columns floating in soft clay. It was found that with unencased columns the bearing capacity improvement is about 3.5 fold, but with geogrid encasement the improvement increases to 5 fold, where 60% of the column length is encased. With full-length encasement (i.e., 100%), the improvement is only about 3 fold. It is therefore evident that partially encased floating columns are superior to the fully encased ones. In contrast, with end-bearing stone columns, full-length encasement is reported to have exhibited better performance improvement than the partially encased ones. In the former case (floating columns), it is the bulge formation at a deeper depth that enhances the bearing capacity, while in the latter case (end-bearing columns), it is the stiffening effect of the encasement that enables the column to transmit the surcharge pressure onto the competent strata below. Temperatures were measured along instrumented geogrids to determine thermal strains and their changes with seasonal temperatures. It was observed that the application of temperature correction to the measured strain values by electrical wire resistance (EWR) strain gauges to compensate for temperature-induced strains is not correct. Because of the effects of soil confinement, the geogrids confined with soil do not undergo thermal expansion or contraction from temperature change if slippage between the soil and geogrid cannot occur. Instead of thermal strains, thermal stress or thermal force will be developed in the geogrids with the magnitude depending on the elastic properties, temperature change, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. The consolidation of the soft foundation soil of a geogrid-reinforced embankment, improved with prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), is modelled in this paper using two-dimensional (2D) plane strain coupled finite element (FE) analysis to predict long-term multiple behaviour characteristics (e.g., settlement, lateral displacement, excess pore-water pressure response, geosynthetic strain) of the embankment. Two sets of analyses were carried out with the foundation soil being modelled using relatively simple elastic-viscoplastic (EVP) models. A nonlinear creep function was used in association with them. The input material parameters were determined from extensive laboratory testing or were taken from reliable sources except for the horizontal permeability, which was systematically back-estimated using oedometer test data and the first year of field settlement data. This paper presents the results from parametric finite element analyses of geocell-supported embankments constructed on weak foundation soils. A composite model is used to numerically simulate the improvement in the strength and stiffness of the soil as a result of geocell confinement. The shear strength of the geocell-encased soil is obtained as a function of the additional confining pressure due to the geocell encasement considering it as a thin cylinder subjected to internal pressure. The stiffness of the geocell-encased soil is obtained from the stiffness of the unreinforced soil and the tensile modulus of the geocell material using an empirical equation. The validity of the model is verified by simulating the laboratory experiments on model geocell-supported embankments. Parametric finite element analyses of the geocell-supported embankments are carried out by varying the dimensions of the geocell layer, the tensile strength of the material used for fabricating the geocell layer, the properties of the infill soil, and the depth of the foundation layer. A series of laboratory model tests have been performed to study the behaviour of geocell-reinforced sand beds under strip loading. The strain in geocell walls, pressure transmitted to the subgrade soil, and deformations in the subgrade were measured during the tests to develop an understanding of the mechanism of geocell reinforcement. The pattern of strain variation in the geocell walls indicates that the geocell mattress behaves as a composite beam supported by the subgrade soil. The potential benefits of geocell reinforcement in soft clay foundations have been studied by a series of laboratory-scale static load tests on a rigid circular footing placed on a fill surface. Parameters of the test program include depth of placement of the geocell layer, width and height of the geocell layer, and influence of an additional layer of planar geogrid at the base of the geocell mattress. With the provision of geocell reinforcement, the load-carrying capacity of the soft clay foundation can be improved by a factor of up to 4.8 times that of the unreinforced soil. Heaving of the soil can be reduced substantially by providing geocell reinforcement of sufficient height and width. Results are presented from a series of tests performed to investigate improvement in load-carrying capacity and reduction in bulging of a granular pile in soft clay by geogrid reinforcement. The study revealed an increase in the load-carrying capacity of geogrid-reinforced piles. The engineering behaviour improved with an increase in the number of geogrids and a decrease in the spacing between them. The paper describes an experimental investigation in which two large-scale geosynthetic reinforced soil embankments and one unreinforced soil embankment were taken to collapse under a strip footing placed close to the crest. One reinforced embankment was constructed with a relatively extensible and weak polypropylene geogrid and the second with a relatively strong and stiff high-density polyethylene geogrid. The geometry of the unfaced embankments, sand soil, and loading arrangement were the same for all three structures. The focus of the paper is on the experimental design, construction, testing, and instrumentation techniques used in the investigation and selected test results. The results of the study show that the ultimate footing load capacity increased with an increase in reinforcement strength (and stiffness) and that the reinforced soil embankments had a load capacity up to 1.6–2.0 times that of the nominal identical control embankment without reinforcement.
