The east–northeast-striking Thelon and Judge Sissons faults of south-central Nunavut are well preserved and record long-lived dextral transcurrent movement with complex reactivation and fluid flow histories. The faults cut across Archean gneisses, Paleoproterozoic plutons, and a Mesoproterozoic sedimentary basin in the Rae domain of the western Churchill Province. They formed and were reactivated during multiple deformation events beginning with an initial faulting event at 1830–1760 Ma, followed by an epithermal faulting event at 1760–1750 Ma and late reactivation events at 1600–1300 Ma. The initial faulting event produced the core-damage zone architecture of the faults. Damage zones are characterized by multiple fracture sets, quartz veins and hydrothermal crackle breccias, surrounding core zones defined by multiple mosaic to chaotic breccias and cataclasites with dextral slip indicators. The epithermal faulting event is expressed by the presence of crosscutting comb, crustiform-cockade and lattice-bladed quartz ± hematite ± carbonate veins, and is likely associated with a magmatic event of similar age. The late reactivation events resulted in the formation of irregular, non-cohesive crackle to mosaic breccias and gouges, which became the primary pathways for uranium-bearing hydrothermal fluids and the formation of unconformity-type uranium deposits. The Thelon and Judge Sissons faults are similar to other major continental faults in the Rae domain (e.g., McDonald fault, Wager Bay shear zone), which formed during the Paleoproterozoic Taltson–Thelon and Trans-Hudson orogenies and to modern analogues, such as the Karakorum, Altyn Tagh, and Hunan–Jiangxi faults, which formed during the Himalayan–Tibetan orogeny and experienced prolonged hydrothermal and even hot spring activity.

Zooplankton are relevant indicators of changes in lake water quality, used for monitoring the response of aquatic ecosystems to the combined effects of declining acidic deposition and rising air temperatures. First, the current landscape was defined from the recent (2017) spatial patterns of zooplankton communities in 73 Quebec lakes distributed over an 800-km SW–NE gradient, spanning a wide range of water quality, climate, and morphometric characteristics. On a large scale, we identified among-lake clustering of three types of zooplankton assemblages and variation in species composition at fine scale between lake pairs. Dissimilarity in zooplankton assemblages among lake pairs were best correlated (r > 0.400, p < 0.001) with their difference in air temperature, pH, and calcium, reflecting spatial gradients in climate and lake acid–base status. Second, to examine long-term response in the zooplankton community, we compared acidification indicators and abundance of taxa for a subset of 19 lakes sampled in 1982 and 2017. Despite an average threefold drop in sulfate concentration, changes in calcium and pH were relatively small, and consequently, no major changes in zooplankton assemblages were detected since 1982.

Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic basins in western North America record the evolving position of the Laurentian craton within two supercontinents during their growth and dismemberment: Columbia (Nuna) and Rodinia. The western-most exposures of the Columbia rift-related Belt–Purcell Supergroup are preserved in northeastern Washington, structurally overlain by the Deer Trail Group and depositionally overlying the Neoproterozoic Windermere Supergroup. It has been disputed whether the Deer Trail Group is correlative with the Belt–Purcell Supergroup, or younger. To help resolve the uncertain correlation of these units and their bearing on supercontinent evolution, we characterized the detrital zircon age populations of units from the Deer Trail Group, the Windermere Supergroup, and the Belt–Purcell Supergroup in northeastern Washington. These data show that the western part of the Columbia supercontinent (now located in Australia and eastern Antarctica) remained attached to western Laurentia and continued to supply 1600–1500 Ma detrital zircon grains to the Belt–Purcell Supergroup until after ca. 1391 Ma. The Deer Trail Group is younger than the Belt–Purcell strata, with the basal unit younger than ca. 1362 Ma and a middle unit younger than ca. 1300 Ma. The Deer Trail Group has a pre-Grenville-age provenance from the southwestern USA and possibly east Antarctica. The Buffalo Hump Formation is younger than the Deer Trail Group, with Grenville-age (ca. 1112 Ma) detrital zircon grains and a detrital zircon signature like that of the overlying Neoproterozoic Windermere Supergroup. We interpret the Deer Trail Group to have been deposited during the rift-demise of supercontinent Columbia and before the Grenville-age assembly of the supercontinent Rodinia.

The Gunflint Formation of northwestern Ontario, Canada, contains an extensive array of stromatolite morphologies and associated fossilized bacteria. It, and correlative units in the United States, provided some of the most persuasive early interpretations of stromatolites and evidence of Precambrian bacterial life. This study examined the siliciclastic rocks in the Gunflint Formation and discovered a multitude of features formed by the development of cohesive biogenic mats on bedding surfaces. In former shallow subtidal depositional settings, evidence of mat erosion was most common, with the presence of various types of wrinkle structures. Microscopically carbonaceous layers and rip-up fragments representing mats and their eroded remnants are well preserved. This emphasizes the abundance of bacterial life in the shallow nearshore of the Gunflint Formation about 1.88 billion years ago and further indicates an increased flux of reductants was necessary during this time period to establish low oxygen levels in the ocean.

Stable carbon isotope geochemistry is a well-established and reliable tool for studying metabolisms of microbial communities in the Precambrian record; however, the isotopic effects of high-temperature alteration from igneous intrusions (i.e., contact metamorphism) have not been thoroughly explored. The Mesoproterozoic (∼1.4 Ga) Middlebrun Bay Member of the Rossport Formation, Sibley Group, in Ontario, Canada, is composed of carbonaceous stromatolites and microbial laminites preserved in an evaporitic, lacustrine chert–carbonate deposit and is cross-cut by an intrusive mafic sill at the studied locality. Sedimentary organic matter (kerogen) was investigated along two vertical stratigraphic transects to determine the spatial variability of its geochemical preservation. Thermal alteration of the preserved kerogen (as measured by Raman spectroscopy) increased toward the mafic sill, but the alteration was greater for kerogen preserved in carbonate mineralogies compared to that preserved in quartz (chert). Bulk δ13Corg values fluctuate throughout each vertical section, with a total average of −28.2‰ ± 0.8‰; however, values are unexpectedly lower for samples near the mafic sill, approaching −30‰, inconsistent with previously reported patterns. These measurements indicate that thermal alteration of sedimentary rocks does not universally result in 13C enrichment and increased δ13Corg values and suggests that ancient kerogen may be preferentially shielded from postdepositional heating effects due to micrometre-scale differences in mineralogy.

The Kushk Series is a distinctive late Ediacaran succession occurring in the Bafq and Behabad regions of central Iran that has yielded an extensive community of diverse Ediacara biota, including several Precambrian (Chuaria) and Ediacaran (Cloudina, Corumbella) index fossils. The Kushk Series reaches a thickness of up to 518 m and consists of shallow to deep subtidal deposits along a homoclinal carbonate ramp during a transgression–regression cycle. These deposits accumulated as part of an extensional rift basin complex resulting from the opening of the Proto–Paleotethys Ocean in northeastern Gondwana. Latest Ediacaran fossils occur in the deep-water calcareous marine shales and represent a thriving community at the dawn of animal life.

The study of ancient plate boundaries can provide insights into the past and present-day tectonic processes. Here, we describe a magnetotellurics (MT) study of the Precambrian basement of the Hay River Fault (HRF) in northwest Alberta, which is the southwest segment of the Great Slave Lake shear zone. New broadband MT data were collected to give a clearer image of the crustal structure. The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was imaged as a low-resistivity layer above the resistive crystalline basement. Four basement conductors were defined, and correlate with the terrane boundaries delineated with aeromagnetic data. These are (1) a major conductor in the Kiskatinaw domain, (2) a conductor on the boundary of the Ksituan and Chinchaga domains, (3) a conductor on the boundary of the Chinchaga and Buffalo Head domains, and (4) a conductor near the HRF. Both (1) and (2) correspond to areas of high seismic reflectivity. The low resistivity can be explained by interconnected grain boundary graphite or sulfide phases deposited by metamorphic fluid migration. The HRF was not definitively located in previous studies. The new data show that the HRF could be thin (1 km) or wide (10 km) and located at the boundary of the contrasting aeromagnetic anomalies or further to the north. Various tectonic processes are proposed to interpret the possible locations of the HRF. No electrical anisotropy structure is required to interpret the MT data in this study.

The Peter Lake domain, a component of the Hearne craton in Saskatchewan, includes several intrusive complexes ranging in age from 2.70 to 1.83 Ga. Two gabbroic complexes (Swan River and Porter Bay) together represent one of the largest accumulations of Precambrian mafic intrusion, both metamorphosed at amphibolite facies. Sulfide-poor PGE occurrences are found in both complexes and share many textural and lithological characteristics with magmatic contact-type PGE–(Ni–Cu) deposits such as the chaotic Lac des Iles pluton and with layered stratiform deposits of large layered intrusions such as Bushveld or Stillwater. Lithologically, both complexes are dominated by leucocratic gabbronorite and gabbro, locally characterized by cumulate layering, cross-bedding, brecciated, and pegmatitic textures. U–Pb zircon crystallization ages between 2562 and 2560 Ma were obtained for the Swan River complex. sulfide formation is interpreted to be of magmatic origin rather than remobilized, as had been speculated by exploration geologists, and is therefore of the same age as the host gabbro. Geochemical data support the interpretation of a mantle plume origin in a subduction environment for the Swan River complex. The Porter Bay complex is much more restricted in areal extent and a leucocratic gabbronorite yielded a U–Pb zircon age of 1913 ± 1 Ma, which is interpreted as the crystallization age and the time of sulfide formation. Major and trace element geochemical data of Porter Bay complex rocks show a considerably more evolved character than the Swan River complex, and is interpreted as indicating emplacement in a continental arc environment.

The plausibility of land disturbance as a cause of declining phosphorus (P) concentrations in oligotrophic lakes within south-central Ontario, Canada, is evaluated using the process-based model INCA-P. The model was calibrated upon three catchments in the Muskoka–Haliburton region (MHR): Harp (HP), Dickie (DE), and Plastic (PC), which have varying degrees of declining P export and different forms of historic disturbances (timber harvesting, tree death, and soil acidification, respectively). Hindcasts (1978–2007) were run with and without simulated disturbances. Model performance of both DE and HP was greatly improved when effects of wetland tree deaths (DE) and harvesting (HP) were included. In PC, with no record of timber harvesting and relatively minor declines in P, initial hindcasts successfully accounted for the majority of interannual P fluxes, and performance was only marginally improved through the simulation of soil acidification. Vegetation decay, harvesting, and catchment acidification accounted for 63%, 24%, and 0.6%, respectively, of P export over the past 30 years. Of all disturbances, wetland vegetation death had the highest impact on areal P exports, indicating that riparian stability is particularly important.

This article provides stratigraphic and geochronological data from a central part of Gondwana’s northern margin — the Moroccan Meseta Domain. This region, located to the north of the Anti-Atlas area with extensive outcrops of Precambrian and lower Paleozoic rocks, has hitherto not received much attention with regard to its Precambrian geology. Detrital and volcanic zircon ages have been used to constrain sedimentary depositional ages and crustal affinities of sedimentary source rocks in stratigraphic key sections. Based on this, a four-step paleotectonic evolution of the Meseta Domain from the Ediacaran until the Early Ordovician is proposed. This evolution documents the transition from a terrestrial volcanic setting during the Ediacaran to a short-lived carbonate platform setting during the early Cambrian. The latter then evolved into a rifted margin with deposition of thick siliciclastic successions in graben structures during the middle to late Cambrian. The detritus in these basins was of local origin, and a contribution from a broader source area (encompassing parts of the West African Craton) can only be demonstrated for postrifting, i.e., laterally extensive sandstone bodies that seal the former graben. In a broader paleotectonic context, it is suggested that this Cambrian rifting is linked to the opening of the Rheic Ocean, and that several peri-Gondwanan terranes (Meguma and Cadomia–Iberia) may have been close to the Meseta Domain before drifting, albeit some of them seem to have been constituted by a distinctly different basement.

Baker, S. R., Watmough, S. A. and Eimers, M. C. 2015. Phosphorus forms and response to changes in pH in acid-sensitive soils on the Precambrian Shield. Can. J. Soil Sci. 95: 95–108. Soil acidification may explain declines in total phosphorus (TP) levels that have been observed in surface waters in central Ontario, Canada, but much of the research on phosphorus (P) mobility in pH manipulated soils has been performed at high P concentrations (i.e., >500 µM). This study investigated P fractionation in acidic (pH≤4.6) soils in south-central Ontario and relationships between soil pH and P sorption at relatively low P concentrations to test whether long-term declines in soil pH could have increased soil P sorption. Soils from three forested catchments that vary naturally in soil pH and outlet stream [TP] (0.1–0.4 µM in 2008) had very similar soil P concentrations and distributions (Hedley fractionation). Only hydrochloric-acid extractable P (i.e., apatite) differed amongst catchments and was greatest at the catchment with the highest stream [TP]. The fraction of P present as labile/soluble P did not decline with pH as expected and experiments indicated that P sorption at P concentrations between 4.52 and 452.1 µM was insensitive to manipulated solution pH. Soils were, however, able to sorb >90% of P added in sorption experiments at [P]≤452.1 µM. These results suggest that acidification-induced P sorption in upland soils has not contributed to observed decreases in surface water TP concentrations.

Single-grain 40Ar/39Ar ages are reported for detrital white mica, along with conventional step-heating data for whole rocks, from low-grade metasandstone samples from the Goldenville, Halifax, and Rockville Notch groups in the Meguma terrane of southern Nova Scotia. The majority (166) of single grains from 11 samples yielded ages between ca. 615 and 350 Ma, and the remaining 12 grains yielded ages between ca. 1900 and 870 Ma. The late Neoproterozoic–Paleozoic age distributions are consistent with derivation of sediments from the rapidly uplifted flanks of an active rift, where partial to complete resetting of white mica ages occurred at ca. 520–500 Ma, preceding sediment deposition. The ca. 615 Ma ages may be relics of the original detrital white mica that existed in the source rocks prior to the rifting event. Ages from the Upper Silurian White Rock Formation appear to reflect this same ca. 520–500 Ma event, suggesting that sediments in the White Rock Formation were recycled from the Goldenville and Halifax groups. The older Precambrian ages are inferred to represent white mica in the source region, likely Amazonia. The whole-rock age spectra are discordant, with pronounced age gradients and no well-defined age plateaus. Initial gas released from five of the samples at low laboratory extraction temperatures (ca. 450–500 °C) yielded ages of ca. 260–300 Ma, not seen in the single-grain data, whereas gas released at the highest extraction temperatures yielded ages in the range ca. 510–530 Ma, possibly reflecting the principal result obtained from the single-grain data.

We surveyed 34 marshes in relatively pristine Precambrian Shield catchments in Georgian Bay and related water chemistry to a suite of landscape-level variables, including characteristics of the marsh and its drainage basin. The first landscape principal component (explained 48% of variation) ordered marshes along a gradient with high values corresponding to marshes with large watersheds that contain extensive upstream wetland and that receive relatively high precipitation inputs. This axis was negatively related to specific conductivity, pH, nitrate nitrogen, and SO42– concentrations and positively related to total phosphorus, colour, suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen, and summer dissolved organic carbon. Stepwise regression models built using catchment- and marsh-level variables explained up to 64% of the variation in water chemistry variables. Average precipitation and snowmelt inputs to the catchments were first to enter the majority of models, alone explaining up to 43% of the variation (in the case of water colour), while drainage area alone explained 44% of the variation in pH. Concentrations of catchment-derived constituents in marshes were highest in spring, reflecting greater loadings from the watersheds, while ionic strength was highest during summer, reflecting increased contributions form other sources (i.e., lake water).

In conventional plate-tectonic models, an independent Greenland plate is supposed to have drifted in the Paleogene along a transform fault through Nares Strait that links the two branches of the North Atlantic spreading system. However, this postulated structure — widely known as the Wegener Fault — cannot be detected by any means in the southern part of the strait. The mapped geology flanking this part of the strait is identical, with no evidence whatsoever of any strike-slip displacement or compressional deformation, and geophysical data provide no support for the existence of such tectonism offshore. We analyse the serious drawback of having a major transform located within a Precambrian crustal block stable since the Paleozoic and emphasize that the extinct Labrador – Baffin Bay spreading axis is but a mirror image of the active North Atlantic – Gakkel Ridge that terminates in a continental cul-de-sac in the Laptev Sea. We conclude that, in the Baffin Bay – Nares Strait region, there is only one plate (North American) and that the extension required to absorb Labrador – Baffin Bay spreading is to be found in structures within the Canadian Arctic Islands.

The 1.9 Ga Coronation “geosyncline” to the west of Slave craton was among the first Precambrian continental margins to be identified, but its duration as a passive margin has long been uncertain. We report a new U–Pb (isotope dilution – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS)) 207Pb/206Pb date of 2014.32 ± 0.89 Ma for zircons from a felsic pyroclastic rock at the top of the Vaillant basalt, which underlies the passive margin sequence (Epworth Group) at the allochthonous continental slope. A sandstone tongue within the basalt yields Paleoproterozoic (mostly synvolcanic) and Mesoarchean detrital zircon dates, of which the latter are compatible with derivation from the Slave craton. In contrast, detrital zircon grains from the Zephyr arkose in the accreted Hottah terrane have Paleoproterozoic and Neoarchean dates. The latter cluster tightly at 2576 Ma, indistinguishable from igneous zircon dates reported here from the Badlands granite, which is faulted against the Vaillant basalt and underlying Drill arkose. We interpret these data to indicate that Badlands granite belongs to the hanging wall of the collisional geosuture between Hottah terrane and the Slave margin, represented by the Drill–Vaillant rift assemblage. If 2014.32 ± 0.89 Ma dates the rift-to-drift transition and 1882.50 ± 0.95 Ma (revised from 1882 ± 4 Ma) the arrival of the passive margin at the trench bordering the Hottah terrane, the duration of the Coronation passive margin was ∼132 million years, close to the mean age of extinct Phanerozoic passive margins of ∼134 million years (see Bradley 2008).

The Precambrian shield of Madagascar is reevaluated with recently compiled geological data and new U–Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) geochronology. Two Archean domains are recognized: the eastern Antongil–Masora domain and the central Antananarivo domain, the latter with distinctive belts of metamafic gneiss and schist (Tsaratanana Complex). In the eastern domain, the period of early crust formation is extended to the Paleo–Mesoarchean (3.32–3.15 Ga) and a supracrustal sequence (Fenerivo Group), deposited at 3.18 Ga and metamorphosed at 2.55 Ga, is identified. In the central domain, a Neoarchean period of high-grade metamorphism and anatexis that affected both felsic (Betsiboka Suite) and mafic gneisses (Tsaratanana Complex) is documented. We propose, therefore, that the Antananarivo domain was amalgamated within the Greater Dharwar Craton (India + Madagascar) by a Neoarchean accretion event (2.55–2.48 Ga), involving emplacement of juvenile igneous rocks, high-grade metamorphism, and the juxtaposition of disparate belts of mafic gneiss and schist (metagreenstones). The concept of the “Betsimisaraka suture” is dispelled and the zone is redefined as a domain of Neoproterozoic metasedimentary (Manampotsy Group) and metaigneous rocks (Itsindro–Imorona Suite) formed during a period of continental extension and intrusive igneous activity between 840 and 760 Ma. Younger orogenic convergence (560–520 Ma) resulted in east-directed overthrusting throughout south Madagascar and steepening with local inversion of the domain in central Madagascar. Along part of its length, the Manampotsy Group covers the boundary between the eastern and central Archean domains and is overprinted by the Angavo–Ifanadiana high-strain zone that served as a zone of crustal weakness throughout Cretaceous to Recent times.

The Tug Hill Plateau is a roughly elliptical-shaped area located in northern New York State that rises above the adjacent landscape and is underlain predominantly by Middle to Upper Ordovician strata. Its elevated character is inter- preted as a passive response to the tectonic uplift of the adjacent Precambrian basement located to the east and northeast of the plateau. Uplift of the basement is also inferred to have resulted in the strata on the plateau and in the topographi- cally lower terrain to the north dipping gently towards the southwest. Tilting of the plateau was probably facilitated by ro- tation along the newly recognized regionally extensive Black River fault, which separates the plateau from the uplifted basement and marks the plateau's east-northeastern limit. The northern limit of the plateau, accentuated by a pronounced escarpment, is aligned with the northeast-trending Carthage-Colton shear zone, a major Precambrian tectonic boundary. Uplift of the Adirondack Highlands and Tug Hill Plateau, relative to their counterparts northwest of the shear zone, is be- lieved to have been enabled by reactivation of the Carthage-Colton shear zone. Magnetotelluric (MT) measurements were made in southern Manitoba, Canada, as part of the Portable Observatories for Lithosphere Analysis and Research Investigating Seismicity (POLARIS) project, to image the northeastern part of the Williston basin and underlying Precambrian lithosphere. Data collected at 21 sites along a 400 km east–west profile at 49.5°N and a 300 km north–south profile at 100°W were analyzed using robust spectral analysis, tensor decomposition, and two-dimensional inversion. The resulting resistivity models allow subdivision of the Williston basin into three layers: an upper layer of 1–5 Ω·m corresponding to Mesozoic and upper Paleozoic rocks, a 20–50 Ω·m layer corresponding to lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks, and a 2–3 Ω·m layer corresponding to the Ordovician Winnipeg Formation. Deeper penetrating MT responses, interpreted with other MT data, reveal a region in the westernmost Superior craton with a southwest–northeast geoelectric fabric that is oblique to subprovince boundaries. The observations can be explained by Proterozoic deformation extending several hundred kilometres east of the Superior boundary zone or by a separate Archean terrane adjacent to the boundary. The Thompson belt (TOBE) conductor in the south of the study area has previously been interpreted as part of the Superior boundary zone (SBZ). However, MT results show that the conductor does not extend continuously along the margin of the zone and MT studies to the north define conductors on the margin of the Sask craton. The results suggest the TOBE conductor is associated with the Sask craton margin. The MT results indicate significant along-strike variation of the SBZ in southern Manitoba.

Calcium (Ca) concentrations in surface waters on the Precambrian Shield are determined primarily by the Ca weathering rate in soil, which requires extensive soil data that generally do not exist. From a water chemistry database comprising approximately 550 lakes in south-central Ontario, Canada, 130 lakes were selected with low Ca concentrations (Ca < 75 µmol·L–1). Calcium weathering is primarily dominated by silicate minerals such as plagioclase and hornblende, allowing the use of Ca–sodium (Na) ratios in lake water to estimate Ca weathering rates. Soil profile data at seven sites indicated that the Ca–Na ratio from mineral weathering is 0.86; correspondingly, Ca weathering rates in lakes ranged from 0.04 to 0.24 kmol·ha–1·year–1 (median of 0.09 kmol·ha–1·year–1). This compares with a range of 0.06–0.24 kmol·ha–1·year–1 (median of 0.14 kmol·ha–1·year–1) obtained using the steady-state water chemistry model. Using these methods to bound potential weathering rates, Ca concentrations in individual lakes at steady state are predicted to decline by 10%–40% compared with current values. Dynamic soil hydrochemical model predictions indicate that Ca concentrations in lakes will be considerably lower than these steady-state predictions within decades if timber harvesting occurs in the drainage basins.

Few studies of biological recovery from acidification have dealt with community responses to changes in water chemistry, despite the importance of environmental tolerance and biological interactions that may only be visible by examining the community as a whole. In this study, we examined the ability of pH and several water chemistry covariables to explain temporal changes in the littoral benthic macroinvertebrate communities of lakes recovering from acidification. Data from 17 lakes sampled from 1988 to 2002 were summarized using correspondence analysis and compared using Procrustes analysis. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to examine the relationship between chemical variables and community structure. Benthic community composition changed over the sampling period, with significant year-to-year changes from 1993 to 1998. Community composition and water chemistry were highly correlated throughout the study period, although the strongest correlations were found from 1993 to 1997, coinciding with the period of greatest change in the benthic community. These results suggest that benthic macroinvertebrate communities in these lakes have changed in response to changes in water chemistry that are consistent with recovery from acidification.

U–Pb dating of detrital zircons, magmatic zircons, and metamorphic zircon overgrowths and titanites from the Priest River complex, USA, reveal the ages of high-grade metasedimentary rocks, intrusive ages of associated igneous rocks, and the timing of Precambrian metamorphic events. Sensitive high-mass resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb dates of detrital zircons from the Hauser Lake gneiss and Gold Cup Quartzite are predominately Paleoproterozoic with some Archean grains. The Hauser Lake gneiss contains detrital zircons with nearly concordant ages as young as 1511 Ma. Isotope dilution – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS) and chemical abrasion – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA–TIMS) dating of magmatic zircon from amphibolites in the Hauser Lake Gneiss yield 1470–1430 Ma crystallization ages based on discordant data, with Cretaceous lower intercepts. The U–Pb zircon systematics are very complex and reflect multiple periods of magmatic and metamorphic growth. A combination of mechanical abrasion, chemical abrasion (CA–TIMS), and SHRIMP methods were required to identify the major geochronological components. These data, in addition to one Nd model age, strengthen correlations between the Hauser Lake Gneiss and the lower Belt–Purcell Supergroup and the Gold Cup Quartzite with the Neihart Quartzite, which underlies the Belt–Purcell Supergroup. Four SHRIMP-dated metamorphic zircon overgrowths give concordant Grenville dates with a weighted average of 1127 ± 110 Ma. This Grenville-aged metamorphic event is recorded by many isotopic systems in the Belt–Purcell basin and reflects a static thermal event, possibly driven by magmatism at depth.

The Midcontinent Rift in the Lake Superior region of North America is one of the best preserved examples of an aborted Precambrian intercontinental rift, one that hosts a diverse suite of rock types in addition to the well-studied and voluminous rift-fill flood basalts. Although there is a growing database of high-precision age information for the main volcanic packages and the largest mafic intrusions, there is relatively little information available on the absolute timing of mafic-ultramafic intrusions, dyke swarms, and alkaline complexes, especially in the Ontario portion of the rift. We report new high-precision U–Pb ages for 29 samples, primarily collected in the Lake Nipigon area, Ontario. From these new age results, it is now possible to expand the known distribution of Geon 15 magmatism in the region, confirm an early stage of Midcontinent Rift mafic magmatism between 1150 and 1130 Ma, provide evidence that significant mafic–ultramafic magmatism occurred in the Lake Nipigon region slightly earlier (~1115–1110 Ma) than the main stage of rift magmatism (1108–1094 Ma), and further document synchronous ~1110–1100 Ma tholeiitic and alkaline magmatism.

This study documents the discovery of calcite crusts on the upper surface of clasts within morainic complexes in Akshayuk Pass, southern Cumberland Peninsula (Baffin Island), a region underlain by granitic and gneissic rocks of the Precambrian Canadian Shield. Strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) indicate that the major source of calcium is derived from the local dissolution of fracture-filling calcite and a minor source is derived from silicate weathering. The calcite crusts have δ13C values between 1.6‰ and 12.0‰ and δ18O values in the –13.0‰ and –7.9‰ range. These values are highly enriched over the predicted isotopic values based on the δ13CDIC and δ18O of the local water and temperature at which calcite precipitation occurred. The isotopic enrichments are attributed to a combination of both equilibrium and kinetic evaporation and were verified experimentally. The series of evaporative experiments indicate that kinetic evaporation produces a far-from-equilibrium isotope effect on both the δ13C and δ18O composition of the precipitating calcite (13CKIE CaCO3–CO2 between 20.2‰ and 40.5‰ VPDB; 18OKIE averaging 34.9% ± 3.7% VSMOW). Based on these results, the formation of the calcite crusts is ascribed to the evaporation of stagnating ephemeral lakes and streams following the retreat of valley glaciers. Given the >1500 m difference in heights between the highland and the valley, the katabatic winds originating from the Penny Ice Cap can act as a catalyst to increase the rate of evaporation. In addition, radiocarbon dating of ten of these crusts yielded Holocene ages (7640 cal (calibrated) BP to modern). These results suggest that the maximum expansion of Holocene valley glacier in Akshayuk Pass, previously thought to have occurred during the Little Ice Age, is probably much older.

The Laramide Black Hills uplift of southwest South Dakota exposes a Precambrian crystalline core of ~2560–2600 Ma basement granitoids nonconformably overlain by two Paleoproterozoic intracratonic rift successions. In the northern Black Hills, a 1 km thick, layered sill (the Blue Draw metagabbro) that intrudes the older rift succession provides a key constraint on the timing of mafic magmatism and of older rift-basin sedimentation. Ion microprobe spot analyses of megacrysts of magmatic titanite from a horizon of dioritic pegmatite in the uppermost sill portion yield a 207Pb/206Pb upper-intercept age of 2480 ± 6 Ma (all age errors ±2σ), comparable to two-point 207Pb/206Pb errorchron ages obtained by Pb stepwise leaching of the same titanites. Nearly concordant domains in coexisting magmatic zircon yield apparent spot ages ranging from 2458 ± 16 to 2284 ± 20 Ma (i.e., differentially reset along U–Pb concordia), and hornblende from an associated metadiorite yields a partially reset date with oldest apparent-age increments ranging between 2076 ± 16 and 2010 ± 8 Ma. We interpret these data as indicating that an episode of gabbroic magmatism occurred at 2480 Ma, in response to earlier rifting of the eastern edge of the Wyoming craton. Layered mafic intrusions of similar thickness and identical age occur along a rifted belt in the southern Superior craton (Sudbury region, Ontario). Moreover, these mafic intrusions are spatially aligned using previous supercontinent restorations of the Wyoming and Superior cratons (Kenorland–Superia configurations). This new "piercing point" augments one previously inferred by spatial–temporal correlation of the Paleoproterozoic Huronian (southern Ontario) and Snowy Pass (southeastern Wyoming) supergroups. We propose that layered mafic intrusions extending from Nemo, South Dakota, to Sudbury, Ontario, delineate an axial rift zone along which Wyoming began to separate from Superior during initial fragmentation of the Neoarchean supercontinent at ≥2480 Ma.

The fossil record of sponges is a very old one, and begins in the Precambrian, but is rather incomplete. Only those sponges with a rigid skeleton, i.e., Hexactinosida and Lychniscosida (both hexactinellids), lithistids (demosponges with desmas), and sponges with a massive calcareous skeleton (polyphyletic demosponges and Calcarea) have a more or less continuous fossil record that is, however, inadequately studied, especially from the Tertiary. The beginning of sponge diversification during the Cambrian is relatively well known thanks to their very good preservation, from the Chengjiang fauna in China and Burgess Shale in Canada, where even sponges with unfused spicules occur. The majority of palaeontologic studies are concerned with taxonomic aspects of fossil sponge faunas, but investigations of the microstructure of the calcareous skeleton, of phylogeny (especially of the early forms), and of various aspects of their ecology have produced important results. Future research still has to fill gaps in the knowledge of fossil faunas, especially "soft" sponges, and in the phylogeny of sponges (especially for the polyphyletic groups like lithistids), but new approaches such as studies of biomarkers are already emerging.

A metamorphic high, the Selkirk–Monashee–Cariboo complex (SMC) is a 200 km × 60 km area cored by K-feldspar–sillimanite rocks. In the Mica Creek area, there appear to be no discontinuities in metamorphic isograds, structural trends, or the Late Precambrian stratigraphic units. U–Pb dates suggested that the continuities may only be apparent. In this paper, we report 40Ar/39Ar dates on muscovite, biotite, and hornblende from some of the same samples dated by U–Pb and samples that crop out very close to the dated samples. The goal was to set constraints on the alternative interpretations of the metamorphic–structural history. These interpretations are as follows: (1) U–Pb ages record different times of metamorphic crystallization and deformation, and there are significant tectonic displacements; the mappable continuities are only apparent. (2) The structural and stratigraphic continuity is real, and the range is due to localized heating and deformation events spanning ~100 Ma; the relative uniformity of the 40Ar/39Ar dates over a distance of ~45 km suggests that the area behaved as a coherent cooling unit.

From a 3-year study of 21 northern Ontario lakes, models were developed to determine the duration of ice cover, predict the timing of spring stratification, and predict the end-of-season mixing depth. The model to determine lake freeze and thaw dates was based on the daily variability of water temperature measured with a data logger suspended 1 and 2 m below the surface. The model to predict the duration of time (days) from lake thaw to lake stratification was developed using the mean May air temperature (degrees Celsius), dissolved organic carbon, and lake surface area (r2 = 0.79). The end-of-season mixing depth was best predicted using days to stratification and dissolved organic carbon concentration (r2 = 0.72). By applying a simple climate change scenario model, we were able to show that increased air temperature, rather than increased water clarity, was the most important factor affecting the timing of stratification. In contrast, lake clarity was the most important factor affecting end-of-season mixing depth in small Shield lakes.

The influence of golf course operation and construction on benthic algal communities in headwater streams on the Precambrian Shield was investigated using a reference condition approach. Streams were sampled for water chemistry and epilithic benthic algae on operational golf courses, on courses under construction, and from nearby minimally impacted reference locations. Epilithic diatom community structure was different in reference streams than in operational golf course streams, the latter indicating nutrient enrichment, higher pH, and disturbance. Full counts of diatoms and soft algae revealed that there was a lower proportion of diatoms relative to other algal groups, cyanobacteria in particular, in operational golf course streams compared with samples from reference locations. Dominance by a single taxon was also significantly higher in operational golf course streams. Although differences relative to the reference streams were less marked for the streams on courses under construction, full counts of diatoms and soft algae provided evidence of disturbance and nutrient enrichment. In particular, high proportions of filamentous green algae were recorded. A limestone boulder in the Triassic Lepreau Formation near Saint John, New Brunswick, has yielded the first diverse marine fauna from the sub-Caradoc Ordovician of the western Avalon continent. This fauna includes the first Arenig conodonts recovered from Avalon and represents an unexposed interval in southern New Brunswick. Association of the conodonts Drepanoistodus and Baltoniodus and the trilobites Neseuretus, Nileus, and Stapeleyella emphasizes the faunal dissimilarity of Avalon and Laurentia through the late Middle Ordovician. Extension of the ranges of Neseuretus cf. Neseuretus parvifrons and Stapeleyella from Britain into New Brunswick further emphasizes that "eastern" and "western" Avalon were confluent parts of a unified, insular Avalon continent that originated in the latest Precambrian. This fauna correlates with the lower Amorphognathus (Lenodus) variabilis Zone (Kundan Stage) of Baltica and the terminal Arenig (upper Middle Ordovician; lower Darriwilian Stage) of Avalonian Britain. Available evidence suggests that an Arenig cover sequence with local shallow-water hematitic iron ore, quartz arenite, and rare limestone extended across the Avalonian marginal and inner platforms from eastern Newfoundland to the Boston, Massachusetts, region. This "western" Avalonian Arenig shows the greatest similarity with the Arenig of the Welsh Borderlands. Phosphatic fossils from the boulder have a thermal alteration index much lower than that of nearby lower Paleozoic outcrops and suggest derivation of the boulder from a weakly heated Avalonian succession brought into the Bay of Fundy region by post-Ordovician transcurrent faulting.

At the surface, Mont Mégantic, the easternmost and most imposing of the Monteregian hills, is composed of 77.5% leucogranite and syenite and 22.5% gabbro. Nonetheless, the intrusion is characterized by a major positive Bouguer anomaly of +20 mGal. A computed three-dimensional gravity adumbration is consonant with the intrusion having the form of a vertical prismatic column with a flat base at a depth of 10 km. The base appears to coincide with the unconformity atop Precambrian basement rocks. Gabbro composes 96% of the adumbration. Leucogranite and syenite make up the remainder and are confined to an uppermost layer no more than about 1 km thick. The subvolcanic texture of the granite and presence of miarolitic cavities at Mégantic show the shallow level of the intrusion, the present surface perhaps having been no deeper than 1 or 2 km. This is the same as the depth of emplacement elucidated at Mont Royal, at the opposite end of the Monteregian chain, which in turn points to uniform uplift and erosion since Early Cretaceous time across the entire area, from the shield and well into the Appalachians. The mechanism of intrusion at Mégantic appears to be the same as that we proposed earlier for the eight classical Monteregians.

The estuary of the St. Lawrence River between Baie-Comeau and Sept-Îles is an area where 50 to 100 earthquakes are detected yearly. This study defines the major lineaments of the Precambrian basement and compares them with mapped faults where possible, and examines their possible correlation with the local earthquakes. Onshore, aerial photographs, remote sensing images, and field mapping are used to identify the geological structures of the Precambrian basement, while offshore, they are interpreted from potential field (magnetic, gravity) and a published synthesis of seismic reflection profiles. The Precambrian basement dips towards the southeast under the Appalachian nappes with normal faults with kilometre-scale throw and east–west or ENE–WSW strikes. Onshore, a system of normal brittle faults with a complex history of movements crosscuts both the Precambrian basement and the overlying Ordovician sedimentary cover. Most earthquakes occur beneath the St. Lawrence River at focal depths between about 7 and 25 km that place them well within the Precambrian Shield. In the Lower St. Lawrence Seismic Zone, the trend of the normal faults that changes from SW–NE to mostly east–west, and lateral density anomalies possibly enhance the local stress level. It is also suggested that local faults could be weak because of crustal fluids at depth, possibly under hydrostatic pressure, or to fault gouge, which leads to a lower coefficient of friction. It is possible that the region was intensely fractured by the emplacement of the Sept-Iles layered igneous complex.

Application of bandpass and directional filtering to potential-field maps of western Canada has led to the discovery of regionally extensive anomalies crossing the northwest strike of Cordilleran structures. The most prominent of these, the Steamboat–Fraser trend, is a north–south-striking feature that projects from the foreland belt in northeastern British Columbia, where it becomes subparallel to anomalies east of the Mackenzie Mountains, southward to the northern limit of the Fraser River strike-slip fault, a distance of about 600 km. Within the hinterland of the Cordillera, the trend appears to spatially correlate with the margins of some Tertiary volcanics. The northeasternmost, and thus most cratonward, Tertiary volcanics are located on the northern projection of the trend. The trend may thus be interpreted as either late, post-orogenic intrusives (e.g., dikes and related volcanic rocks) that are only partially exposed, as pre-orogenic (pre-Mesozoic) features (e.g., faults, dikes) in the crust that were overridden by the Cordilleran thrust sheets, or a combination of these. Although it is not possible to determine which of these (pre- or post-orogenic) is appropriate for the trend, the eventual choice has important implications for the structure and evolution of this part of the Cordillera. If the source of the anomalies is pre-orogenic, a major implication is that Precambrian Shield rocks would be present at depth beneath the southern Canadian Cordillera as far west as the Fraser River fault. Alternatively, if the source is post-orogenic, it represents an anomalously linear feature that has no obvious expression on the surface other than a poorly defined spatial correlation with the margins of some Tertiary volcanics.

The Gunflint Formation, a Paleoproterozoic chemical-clastic sedimentary assemblage outcropping to the immediate northwest of Lake Superior, became famous in 1954 as containing the oldest fossil assemblage known at that time. Older microfossils have since been discovered, but the Gunflint procaryotes remain one of the most diverse Precambrian fossil communities. The finding of possible multicellular organisms in correlative lithic units in Michigan has recently added to the need for an exact age of the Formation. Zircons were extracted from rainout and storm reworked volcanoclastic beds in the upper portion of the Gunflint Formation. A euhedral zircon population has yielded a 1878.3 ± 1.3 million years BP U-Pb age, believed to be nearly synchronous with the depositional age. This not only provides a precise age for the community of organisms, but also strongly supports a back-arc extensional setting for the Animikie Basin, rather than a foreland trough. The Precambrian lithosphere of western Canada was assembled into the present crustal configuration between ca. 2.0–1.78 Ga by plate collisions, sometimes accompanied by arc magmatism, with subsequent cooling of the lithosphere since ca. 1.7 Ga. Collisional processes inferred along preserved plate sutures include (1) subduction of oceanic lithosphere and accretion of Proterozoic arc crust to the western Rae Province; (2) marginal basin consumption and tectonic entrapment of the Hearne Province between coeval subduction–collision zones; and (3) amagmatic marginal basin closure, perhaps analogous to the roots of small collisional orogens, such as the Pyrenees. Seismic reflection profiles acquired during the Lithoprobe Alberta Basement Transect have captured images of syn- to post-collisional structures along these sutures and evidence for crustal-scale thrust imbrication and rigid body accretion of Archean crust with preservation of precollisional tectonic fabric. The degree to which lithospheric mantle beneath Archean crustal blocks was preserved during these collisions is unknown, although tectonic geometries imply significant thermal and (or) mechanical interaction. Post-collisional, intrusive mafic magmatism is imaged widely in both seismic reflection and refraction surveys. These magmatic events are demonstrably Proterozoic, based on crosscutting relationships seen on seismic reflection profiles and geochronology of lower crustal xenoliths, and are comparable in scale to Phanerozoic igneous provinces (e.g., large igneous provinces) but have little preserved surface manifestation. Reactivation of Precambrian basement structures is limited or very subtle, reflecting strength control by the mantle on stress transmission and crustal failure. Long-wavelength elastic deformation of the crust during the Phanerozoic occurred in regions associated with, or adjacent to, Proterozoic mafic magmatism, suggesting local rheologic control of anomalous Phanerozoic paleotopography.

Numerous vertical to subvertical, cylindrical shafts occur in the rugged exposures of the Middle Silurian Amabel Formation bedrock along the Eramosa River, approximately 10 km northeast of Guelph. These shafts vary from < 1 m to 10 m in diameter, with depths as great as 12 m. They can occur as isolated depressions but more commonly are clustered closely together, and many coalesce to form sinuous bedrock walls. These depressions may contain soil, fine sediment, rubble from the surrounding dolomite bedrock, and rounded clasts of Precambrian basement lithologies. Till is conspicuously absent. These shafts occur in close proximity to cavernous pores that were formed during pre-Wisconsinan to Early Wisconsinan time, suggesting a possible karstic origin. The cylindrical shafts, however, with their greater midpoint diameters, sculpted interiors, and inclined axes, and their lack of vertical flutes and till, are more likely to have originated from glaciofluvial discharge at the end of the Late Wisconsinan. The development of these shafts may have been assisted by cavitation, which enhanced the erosional capacity of sediment-laden meltwaters.
