Integrating forest biomass procurement in wood procurement for conventional products is a potential means of reducing bioenergy system supply costs. We studied forest harvest operations to procure biomass in the form of trees and tree sections, along with sawtimber and pulpwood. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of the supply chain with a particular focus on harvest costs and the potential silvicultural savings from a reduced need for site preparation and reforestation. We compared four wood procurement scenarios of increasing intensity (from harvesting only sawtimber to harvesting sawtimber, pulpwood and biomass for bioenergy) at three sites in eastern Canada. Wood procurement intensity did not affect feedstock unit costs (CAD·m−3). At the stand scale, procuring biomass for bioenergy had limited impact on harvest costs (CAD·ha−1) for low-density stands with large trees. In contrast, high-density stands with small trees generated more feedstock for bioenergy (up to 50 m3·ha−1), but biomass procurement increased harvest costs. The cost-effectiveness of the wood supply chain did not vary significantly along the wood procurement intensity gradient we studied when silvicultural savings are considered. The proportion of biomass harvested, stand characteristics, and market conditions proved to be important factors that influence wood procurement profitability.

Successive disturbances such as fire can affect post-disturbance regeneration density, with documented adverse effects on subsequent stand productivity. We conducted a simulation study to assess the potential of reactive (reforestation) and proactive (variable retention harvesting) post-fire regeneration failure mitigation strategies in a 1.37 Mha fire-prone boreal landscape dominated by black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.). We quantified their respective capacity to maintain landscape productivity and post-fire resilience, as well as their associated financial returns under current and projected (RCP 8.5) fire regimes. While post-fire reforestation with jack pine revealed to be the most effective strategy to maintain potential production, associated costs quickly became prohibitive when applied over extensive areas. Proactive strategies such as an extensive use of variable retention harvesting, combined with replanting of fire-adapted jack pine only in easily accessible areas, appeared as a more promising approach. Despite this, our results suggest an inevitable erosion of forest productivity due to post-fire regeneration failure events, highlighting the importance of integrating fire a priori in strategic forest management planning as well as its effects on long-term regeneration dynamics.

Biomass procured from forests affected by natural disturbances as a bioenergy source is increasingly considered in the context of climate change mitigation. By comparing clearcuts with and without biomass procurement, we aimed to determine the effects of biomass extraction performed alongside lumber harvesting on regeneration density, number of planting microsites, forest renewal costs, and carbon fluxes, in harvested boreal stands affected by spruce budworm. The results showed that biomass procurement increased regeneration density and number of planting microsites. Reduction of downed woody debris due to biomass procurement lowered site preparation costs by 282.07 $CAN·ha−1, equivalent to 14.45 $CAN per oven-dry metric ton (odmt−1) of harvested biomass. Product value from biomass processing had to reach from 13.90 to 76.84 $CAN·odmt−1 to make biomass procurement operations profitable. Since biomass procurement significantly increased stocking and reduced the amount of decaying debris, it also reduced cumulative CO2 emissions relative to scenarios without biomass procurement. However, ensuring forest renewal through site preparation and plantation per se, irrespective of biomass procurement, played a more important role for carbon sequestration and net balance. Integrating biomass harvesting with silviculture could have significant ecological and financial impacts on forest management while supporting mitigation efforts against climate change.

We report on a 60-year-old red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton) spacing trial experiment located in Ontario, Canada, that included the combinations between six initial spacings (from 1.2 to 3.0 m) and the presence or absence of a commercial thinning (CT) regime, as well as their impacts on quadratic mean diameter (QMD) and stand volume yield. The CT regime, initiated at age 30, targeted a residual basal area (BA) of 38 m2·ha−1after each of four entries. Without thinning, as initial spacing increased, QMD increased; gross and net volume production peaked in the 2.1–2.4 m spacings. With thinning, similar trends with spacing were evident for QMD, although piece sizes were larger and differences between spacings were lower. The immediate increase of mean tree size caused by tree selection explained most of the differences in QMD between thinned and unthinned plots. Sustainable forest management implies successful regeneration after disturbances. Low N availability and competition can, however, limit tree establishment in boreal ecosystems. To develop silviculture strategies that maintain productivity in such context, we established a field trial in northern Québec, Canada. We evaluated if a companion N2-fixing species ( Alnus alnobetula) promotes or hinders Picea mariana and Pinus banksiana establishment over six growing seasons. We tested if Alnus has a facilitation effect through nutritional processes and a competition effect through light interception. Foliar stable nitrogen isotope ratio ( δ15N = 15N/14N, ‰) results confirmed that Alnus obtains a substantial part of its N through biological fixation and represents an N source in this system. Although we did not observe increased foliar N concentrations in either conifer species in the presence of Alnus, Pinus growth was nonetheless higher in presence of Alnus, whereas no difference was observed for Picea. In the plots where Alnus cohabited with the conifers, the former had a negative impact on seedling growth, suggesting a significant competition for light. Overall, the net effect of Alnus was positive for Pinus and neutral for Picea. Our results have significant implications for silviculture in N-limited systems, especially in the context of climate change that imposes increased levels of stress on regeneration.

Sustainable forest management implies successful regeneration following disturbances. Tree regeneration in subarctic ecosystems can, however, be constrained by limitations to seedling establishment related to cold soils, slow decomposition rates, and competition by ericaceous species. We established a field trial at the northern limit of commercial forests in Québec, Canada, to evaluate to what extent mechanical site preparation (MSP) and planting of a nurse N2-fixing species could promote conifer establishment on a site burned in 2007. The experiment comprised four treatments applied in 2010: standard MSP (disc trenching), standard MSP plus planting of Alnus crispa, intensive MSP, with larger furrows than standard MSP, and a control. Main plots were divided and planted in 2011 with Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Stearns & Poggenb. or Pinus banksiana Lamb. We monitored seedling survival, growth, nutrition, and microsite over a 3-year period. Results revealed interactions between treatments and planted species. Mechanical site preparation resulted in higher conifer growth relative to the control conditions, and planting Alnus resulted in growth gains similar to those obtained from intensive MSP. We measured competitive interactions between Alnus and the conifers that might eventually cancel out the initial benefits derived from facilitation by planting the nurse species. Longer term monitoring of interspecific interactions is needed to unravel the mechanisms responsible for the facilitative effect and identify the best management practices.

Fluorapatite-solubilizing bacteria were isolated from the hyphosphere of the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungus Wilcoxina sp., a dominant species in the Picea glauca (Moench) Voss rhizosphere. Hundreds of strains isolated from the ascomycete Wilcoxina sp. could dissolve tricalcium phosphate, while only 27 of them could produce clarification halos on fluorapatite-amended solid medium. Most of the fluorapatite-solubilizing strains belonged to the Burkholderia genus. Scanning electron microscopy observations have shown that these efficient phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) were able to completely solubilize fluorapatite crystals within 22 h. The efficient PSB Burkholderia sp. strain 205 and Curtobacterium sp. strain 168 were tested for their ability to associate with a genetically distant fungal host while fulfilling their phosphate-solubilizing function. Burkholderia sp. strain 205 successfully associated with the basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor (Maire) P.D.Orton when hydroxyapatite was the only phosphorus source available to the fungus, while there was no bacterial development when Laccaria bicolor could access soluble phosphorus as well. Optical microscopic observation of Laccaria bicolor associated with Burkholderia sp. revealed extensive colonization of fungal hyphae by the bacterium. These results suggest an important role of bacteria – ECM fungi associations in white spruce phosphate nutrition.

In boreal black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) dominated stands, careful logging around advance regenera- tion contributes to protect the shrub layer while increasing light availability. Therefore, it may promote expansion of bog Labrador tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) Kron & Judd), which can impair black spruce growth by direct com- petition for nutrients and by alteration of soil biochemical conditions. Such harvesting approaches may not be suited for ir- regular, uneven-aged black spruce stands in the context of ecosystem-based management. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of different intensities of partial harvest on critical resource availability and to compare the physiological and morphological responses of black spruce and Rhododendron to different intensities of partial harvest treatments. Two years after harvest, photosynthesis rate of black spruce was unchanged and was lower than that of Rhododendron, which was 63% higher after harvest. Nitrogen and water use efficiency were, respectively, 171% and 42% higher in Rhododendron than in black spruce after logging. Following harvest, black spruce physiology appeared to be regulated by the atmospheric humidity deficit, but for Rhododendron, physiology was regulated by light availability. The high plasticity of Rhododen- dron leaf traits could be indicative of the future advantage of this species in these stands following canopy removal associ- ated with harvest. Les valeurs d'efficacited'utilisation de l'azote et de l'eau du Rho- dodendron apres la coupe etaient, respectivement, 171 % et 42 % plus elevees que celles de l'epinette noire. Apresl a coupe, la physiologie de l'epinette noire semblait controlee par le deficit hydrique de l'atmosphere alors que la lumiere controlait celle du Rhododendron. La grande plasticitedes traits foliaires du Rhododendron pourrait etre un indice que cette espece serait avantagee dans le futur par l'elimination du couvert ala suite d'une coupe dans ces peuplements. Growth rates of young conifers can be poor on disturbed sites dominated by Kalmia angustifolia L. Hence, a conifer revegetation trial was established on a Kalmia -dominated site to evaluate the effects of various silvicultural options and planted species on selected soil organic layer characteristics. Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch, Pinus banksiana Lamb., and Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP seedlings were planted in plots with or without Kalmia control with herbicides. The effect of fertilizer amendment was also assessed. Seventeen years postplanting, organic layer fertility indicators suggest that soil fertility improved after Kalmia control and conifer reestablishment, especially if nitrogen (N) – phosphorus – potassium fertilizer was also applied. When Kalmia was controlled, aerobically mineralizable N and exchangeable sodium concentrations were increased; fertilizer addition to herbicided plots also increased exchangeable potassium and calcium concentrations, and cation exchange capacity compared with untreated control plots. Conifer height, diameter, and canopy closure were Larix > Pinus > Picea. Kalmia cover in control plots was 87%; Kalmia reinvasion in herbicided plots achieved 40%–43% cover but did not differ among the conifer species. Principal component analysis indicated that aerobically mineralizable N and total N were positively correlated with canopy closure. Our results suggest that increases in organic-layer fertility were related to increased conifer size resulting from Kalmia control.

Conifer-regeneration failure is often observed on sites invaded by ericaceous shrubs. In northeastern Quebec, Canada, these sites are frequently characterized by dense Kalmia angustifolia L. – Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) K.A. Kron & Judd cover. Such failures are potential consequences of nutrient limitation, allelopathy, or low soil temperatures. Conversion of productive forests into heaths poses a threat to the maintenance of forest productivity and biodiversity. We evaluated scarification, spot fertilization, and increased seedling foliar N concentration as treatments to promote planted black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) seedling survival and growth. We measured seedling, vegetation, and soil responses to the treatments for 5 years following planting. Scarification had positive impacts on seedling growth: the differences between scarified and unscarified plots increased over time, and double-pass scarification proved slightly more effective than a single-pass treatment. Responses to scarification were enhanced when seedlings were fertilized. A slow-release fertilizer with micronutrients proved slightly more effective than the 26N–12P–6K formulation; the latter also induced higher mortality than the former or no fertilizer. Gains due to increased N concentrations based on nursery practices were significant but short-lived. Our results demonstrate how silviculture and nursery practices can be used for resetting the secondary succession where ecosystem retrogression is observed following K. angustifolia – R. groenlandicum invasion.

We established a field trial on an ericaceous-dominated clearcut in Quebec to determine the effect of Kalmia angustifolia L., Vaccinium angustifolium (Ait.), and V. myrtilloides (Michx.) on the growth and physiology of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) seedlings and on soil characteristics over the first two growing seasons. Plots undergoing one of three treatments (shrub removal, humus removal, or undisturbed control) were planted with black spruce seedlings that were either unfertilized or spot fertilized at time of planting. In some of the undisturbed control plots, we also used 15NH415NO3 to compare uptake of broadcast N fertilizer by vegetation. The ericaceous shrubs had a significant negative impact on seedling growth. Growth reductions were not related to water stress, soil temperature, or soil moisture. Extractable NH4-N and P concentrations in mineral soil tended to decrease in the presence of ericaceous shrubs, but effects were not significant. Seedling foliar N concentration was also reduced in the presence of ericaceous shrubs. Of the total amount of 15N fertilizer found in vegetation, 64% was immobilized in Vaccinium spp., 31% in Kalmia, and 5% in black spruce, but spruce took up more 15N per unit of root biomass than the ericaceous shrubs. Kalmia had consistently higher predawn xylem water potentials than black spruce.
