The synthesis of an "unknown" Fe(II) complex originally reported in 1973 and formulated then as [Fe(DMSO)5Cl][SnCl4] was thoroughly reproduced and the compound reformulated as the novel [Fe(DMSO)6][SnCl6] double complex salt. Current elemental analysis and IR and Mössbauer spectroscopy matched the original 1973 data, and Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction provided additional confirmation of our reformulation. [Fe(DMSO)6][SnCl6] (1) crystallizes in the trigonal space group R[IMG] with octahedral [Fe(DMSO)6]2+ and [SnCl6]2– complex ions with an Fe—O bond length of 2.121(3) Å. The same synthesis was extended to Co(II) and Ni(II) to generate the novel [Co(DMSO)6][SnCl6] (2), which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P[IMG] with a Co—O bond length of 2.093(4)–2.113(5) Å, and [Ni(DMSO)6][SnCl6] (3), which crystallized in the trigonal R[IMG] space group and has a Ni—O bond length of 2.062(2) Å. La synthèse d'un complexe "inconnu" de Fe(II), qui avait originalement été rapportée en 1973 et pour lequel la formule [Fe(DMSO)5Cl][SnCl4] avait alors été proposée, a été complètement reproduite et on peut maintenant lui attribuer la formule [Fe(DMSO)6][SnCl6], un double sel complexe. The stepwise symmetry-allowed cycloaddition reactions of [SNS]+ with the dinitriles NC–X–CN (X = CCl2, CO) were investigated. The reaction of [SNS]+ and dinitrile in 2:1 ratio yielded the dicycloaddition product quantitatively after 2 weeks (in situ 13C NMR). At a 1:1 ratio, mixtures of mono- and dicycloaddition products were obtained that could not be completely separated from one another. The energetics of the reaction were estimated in the gas phase, in solution (SO2 and CH2Cl2), and solid phases using DFT calculations (PBE0/6-311G*) and a "volume-based thermodynamics" approach for lattice enthalpies. Monocycloaddition products are stable in the gas phase and in solution with respect to disproportionation reactions, but in the solid state the disproportionation of 2 [NC–X–(CNSNS)][AsF6] into [X(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2 and NC–X–CN is strongly favored because of the higher lattice enthalpy of the 1:2 salt. In the gas phase, the second cycloaddition is endothermic because of the charge repulsion of the two positive charges, but in the solid state the reaction is strongly favored because of the lattice enthalpy gain on the formation of the 1:2 ([X(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2) from two 1:1 salts ([NC–X–(CNSNS)][AsF6] and [SNS][MF6]). The crystal structures of the dicycloaddition products [Cl2C(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2 and [OC(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2 and the monocycloaddition product [Cl2C(CNSNS)CN][AsF6] were obtained. In [Cl2C(CNSNS)CN][AsF6], the free nitrile groups interact with neighboring heterocycles further demonstrating that potential of free nitrile groups for introducing intermolecular interactions. [OC(CNSNS)2]2+ is a planar dication, which adopts the conformation with Sδ+···Oδ– contacts to optimize intramolecular electrostatic interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyridine, when allowed to react with chromic anhydride under strictly anhydrous conditions, gives the known, very air-sensitive, crystalline 2:1 Lewis acid–base complex 1. The crystal structure has now been successfully determined. When benzimidazole and three 2-alkyl-1H-benzimidazoles were treated with chromium trioxide in aqueous acetic acid, crystalline dichromate salts (2–5) were readily formed. These salts consist of dichromate anions linked to the cations by hydrogen bonds of the type N—H···O. The chromium atoms have distorted tetrahedral environments, with the Cr—O distances being typical for dichromate anions. In the cases of the 2-methyl and 2-ethyl salts, the anions are disordered about a centre of inversion. The hydrogen bonding arrangements are discussed and the structures are compared with other oxygenated chromium(VI) species. The dichromate salts are useful selective oxidants for a range of primary and secondary alcohols; examples of these reactions are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reduction of [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][As[sub 6] ][sub 2] with triphenylantimony and tetrabutylammonium chloride produced the diradical 5,5'-bis(1,3,2,4-dithiadiazolyl) [SNSNC-CNSNS] in high yield as a black solid with widely ranging magnetic susceptibilities (e.g., 0.6 to 2.6 µ[sub B] ), which on oxidation with AsF[sub 5] regenerated [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][AsF[sub 6] ][sub 2] . The identity of [SNSNC-CNSNS] was established from EPR, vibrational, and mass spectra. Ab initio molecular orbital [MPW1PW91/6-311G(2df)] calculations show the lowest energy structure to consist of two coplanar rings separated by a C—C single bond (1.444 Å), reflected in the comparison of the vibrational spectra of the diradical with that of [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][AsF[sub 6] ][sub 2] and the calculated spectra. Confidence in the calculated [MPW1PW91/6-311G(2df)] structure of the diradical is supported by the excellent agreement between the calculated and X-ray single crystal structure geometries of [CNSSN][sub 2] and [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][sup 2+] in [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][AsF[sub 6] ][sub 2] . The molecular orbitals indicate the diradical is essentially disjoint, confirmed by a very small (0.07 kJ mol[sup –1] ) GVB-PP(TC-SCF)/6-311G* calculated singlet–triplet energy gap. Accordingly, the EPR spectrum of the diradical (in tetrahydrofuran, 293 K) shows a simple 3-line pattern (g = 2.0043, a([sup 14] N) = 1.11 mT) with no observable exchange coupling between the two radical centers. Mechanical grinding of the diradical results in a large increase in paramagnetism (e.g., from 1.03 to 2.55 µ[sub B] ) that is unprecedented in main group chemistry. The X-ray diffraction data of the ground and unground powder are consistent with a second order phase change on grinding. Attempts to obtain crystals of the diradical by sublimation led instead to numerous decomposition and rearrangement products, including 4-cyano-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl [NC-CNSSN], monoclinic space group C2/c, a = 9.46(2) Å, b = 7.625(5) Å, c = 13.17(2) Å, β = 107.94(4)°, Z = 8. The structure consists of axially symmetric, co-facial, cis dimers linked to form strands through two sets of C eqivalent to N[sup delta–] ···S[sup delta+] contacts. More efficient and larger scale preparations of [SNS][AsF[sub 6] ] and [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][AsF[sub 6] ][sub 2] are reported. Les données de diffraction des rayons X sur les poudres broyées et non broyées sont en accord le fait que le broyage s'accompagne d'un changement de phase du deuxième ordre. Des essais en vue d'obtenir des cristaux du biradical par sublimation ont plutôt conduit à de nombreux produits de décomposition et de réarrangement, y compris du 4-cyano-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyle [NC-CNSSN], groupe d'espace monoclinique, C2/c, a = 9,46(2), b = 7,625(5) et c = 13,17(2) Å, β = 107,94(4)° et Z = 8. La structure est formée de dimères cis, cofaciaux et de symétrie axiale reliés pour former des brins par le biais de deux ensembles de contacts C éqivalent à N[sup delta-] ···S[sup delta+] . On rapporte aussi des préparations plus efficaces et à plus grandes échelles de [SNS][AsF[sub 6] ] et [(CNSNS)[sub 2] ][AsF[sub 6] ][sub 2] . The equilibrium geometries of the isoelectronic ZPh[sub 4] [sup 0, ±1] (Z = B, C, N) molecules have been optimized, in S[sub 4] and D[sub 2] [sub d] symmetries, at the HF/6-31G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) levels, with the phenyl rings constrained to be planar. The ground-state conformations of all three species are shown to be of S[sub 4] symmetry, but the difference of the energies of the S[sub 4] and the D[sub 2] [sub d] conformations is estimated to amount to only ~1 kcal mol[sup –1] , with a barrier to concerted rotational reorientation of the phenyl rings of ~5.0 kcal mol[sup –1] for BPh[sup –] [sub 4] , ~6.4 kcal mol[sup –1] for CPh[sub 4] , and ~7.9 kcal mol[sup –1] for NPh[sup +] [sub 4] . A redetermination of the crystal structure of CPh[sub 4] from –60°C X-ray data agrees with the results of previous determinations at ambient temperature; the CPh[sub 4] molecule in the crystal is slightly compressed along the S[sub 4] axis relative to the free molecule, otherwise the geometries of the two are essentially the same. Correlations between the optimized geometric parameters of the ZPh[sub 4] [sup 0, ±1] molecules have been examined and analyzed in detail, as have the substitution-induced changes in the geometry of the phenyl ring. The results confirm and strengthen the conclusions from the statistical studies by Domenicano et al. on the geometry of benzene rings monosubstituted by atoms of elements from the first row of the Periodic system.Key words: tetraphenylborate, tetraphenylmethane, tetraphenylammonium, ab initio molecular geometries.Opérant au niveau HF/6-31G(d,p) et B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) de la théorie et en contraignant les noyaux phényles à être plans, on a optimisé les géométries à l'équilibre des molécules isoélectroniques ZPh[sub 4] [sup 0, ±1] (Z = B, C, N) dans les symétries S[sub 4] et D[sub 2d] . On démontre que les conformations des trois espèces à l'état fondamental sont de symétrie S[sub 4] ; toutefois, on a évalué que la différence d'énergie entre les conformations S[sub 4] et D[sub 2d] n'est que d'environ 1 kcal mol[sup –1] alors que la barrière à la réorientation rotationnelle des noyaux phényles d'environ 5,0 kcal mol[sup –1] pour le BPh[sup –] [sub 4] , d'environ 6,4 kcal mol[sup –1] pour le CPh[sub 4] et d'environ 7,9 kcal mol[sup –1] pour le NPh[sup +] [sub 4] . Une redétermination de la structure cristalline du CPh[sub 4] à partir de données de rayons X obtenues à –60°C est en accord avec les déterminations antérieures à la température ambiante; par rapport à la molécule libre, la molécule de CPh[sub 4] dans le cristal est légèrement comprimée le long de l'axe S[sub 4] , mais autrement les géométries des deux sont essentiellement les mêmes. On a examiné les corrélations entre les paramètres géométriques optimisés des molécules de ZPh[sub 4] [sup 0, ±1] et on les a analysées en détail comme on l'a fait pour les changements dans la géométrie du noyau phényle induits par une substitution.
