The green manure residual effect on soil health 2 years later in crop rotation is understudied. Little is known about weed biomass impact on soil microbial communities or their interactions. A Colchester County, NS, Canada, organic grain research trial during 2016-2017 comprised 2 or 3-year rotations with or without green manure crop prior to wheat, and then soybeans. Fall soil sampling was conducted both years. The soybean phase of the crop rotation was managed as weedy or non-weedy. Weedy soil showed significantly increased soil respiratory activity and fungal microbial biomass. Green manure treatments did not significantly influence soil health indicators. Exhaustive similarities in terminal Ediacaran–Ordovician cover sequences between tectonic inliers in the Appalachian–Caledonian (A–C) orogen define the Avalonian terrane from coastal northeast North America through southern Britain to Belgium. However, Barr et al. effectively block inclusion of the Mira belt (Mb) in Avalonia by masking a long-documented trans-Avalonian succession under locally defined lithostratigraphic names that prove to be confusing homonyms of themselves. Earlier revisions of Mira belt stratigraphy allow assignment of the Mira belt to a precise location in the Avalonian strike-slip regime—on the marginal–inner platform transition just as the northern Antigonish Highlands and southeast Burin Peninsula. The Mira belt is a tectonic inlier not a "terrane" in the A–C orogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bras d'Or terrane of central Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, contains a well-preserved record of the Ediacaran to early Cambrian evolution of Ganderia, a Gondwana-derived terrane in the northern Appalachian orogen. A complex assemblage of low- to high-grade metasedimentary rocks has varied detrital zircon signatures from laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry U-Pb zircon dating, but combining three or more samples yielded representative age spectra that support correlation of the low- and high-grade metasedimentary rocks throughout the Bras d'Or terrane and the corresponding Ganderian Brookville terrane of southern New Brunswick. In quartzite samples from the McMillan Flowage Formation in the northwestern Bras d'Or terrane, the youngest detrital zircons have ages >900 Ma, in contrast to previously studied psammitic and semipelitic samples from correlative units in the eastern Bras d'Or terrane in which youngest detrital ages are 620–600 Ma. Both quartzite and semipelitic samples from the McMillan Flowage Formation contain Neoproterozoic dates from zircon rims, which reflect metamorphic overgrowths during peak metamorphism at ca. 550 Ma, providing a robust age for peak metamorphism in the Bras d'Or terrane that supports similar, albeit sparse, ages reported previously from monazite and titanite samples. This metamorphism is coeval with the emplacement of voluminous dioritic to granitic plutons that occur throughout the Bras d'Or terrane and form in an Andean-type continental margin subduction zone. New U-Pb zircon ages presented here from plutons in the northern Bras d'Or terrane, combined with previously published ages, are consistent with subduction-related magmatism and associated metamorphism between ca. 575 and 540 Ma. Some cultural groups provide a glimpse at the past because they preserve or adhere to traditional behaviours and (or) living conditions. This brief introduction outlines a series of papers presented at the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Conference that used this model to explore changes in the physical activity behaviour of children over time. Early Cretaceous unconsolidated quartz sand and kaolinitic clay deposits in the lowlands of Nova Scotia are preserved in narrow half-grabens obscured by glacial drift. The Chaswood Formation sediments can be subdivided into three members; upper and lower members dominated by cyclical sand–mud facies of fluvial origin and the middle member with lignitic clay of lacustrine origin. Ferruginous oxisols are common in the fine-grained facies of the upper and lower members. Seismic data indicate that Chaswood Formation strata in the Elmsvale Basin are deformed into steeply dipping faults and fault-related folds (Rutherford Road fault zone). An Aptian–Albian age for this tectonic event is inferred from synsedimentary deformation and from the angular unconformity spanning the Late Cretaceous and Tertiary that truncates the Chaswood Formation. Exhumation of a thick cover of Mesozoic sediment (1–2 km) is needed to account for the preservation of Chaswood Formation outliers after ~80 Ma of erosion. The half-grabens that host the Chaswood Formation were formed in the Mesozoic and were antecedent to the present-day structurally controlled lowlands.Des dépôts non consolidés de sable quartzeux et d'argile à kaolin (Crétacé précoce) dans les basses-terres de la Nouvelle-Écosse sont préservés dans d'étroits demi-grabens sous des dépôts glaciaires. Les sédiments de la Formation de Chaswood peuvent être subdivisés en trois membres : des faciès cycliques sable-boue d'origine fluviale dominent les membres inférieur et supérieur et de l'argile ligneuse d'origine lacustre domine le membre intermédiaire. Les faciès à grain fin des membres inférieur et supérieur comprennent fréquemment des oxisols ferrugineux. Des données sismiques indiquent que les strates de la Formation de Chaswook dans le bassin d'Elmsvale ont été déformées en failles à pendage abrupte et en plis reliés aux failles (zone de failles Rutherford Road). L'âge de cet événement tectonique (Aptien-Albien) est déduit de la déformation synsédimentaire et de la discordance angulaire couvrant le Crétacé tardif et le Tertiaire qui recoupe la Formation de Chaswood. Pour tenir compte de la préservation des lambeaux externes après ~80 Ma d'érosion, il faut l'enlèvement d'une épaisse couverture (1 à 2 km) de sédiments mésozoïques. The article presents the study which examined the seasonal growth dynamics and carbon allocation of the wild blueberry plant (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.). The growth parameters that were measured include stem height, dry weights of the above-ground vegetation, and phenology. The study was conducted at the Wild Blueberry Research Station in Debert, Nova Scotia.

The article presents the study which examined the seasonal changes in photochemistry, light use efficiency, and net photosynthetic rates of wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.). Among the property changes that were analyzed are chlorophyll a and b, carotenoid pigments, and dark- and light-adapted leaf fluorescence. The study was conducted at the Wild Blueberry Research Centre (WBRC) in Debert, Nova Scotia.

The article presents a study which sought to examine the effects of seeding rate, genotype and nitrogen (N) supply on the seed yield and quality of oilseed or Brassica carinata under three varying environments in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. The researchers conducted experiments at three locations during the growing season in 2008 and 2009. It was found out that increases in N supply led to a corresponding boost in protein content and a decrease in oil content.
