Economic base analysis is a limited but useful tool for measuring forest dependence. It cannot measure the full range of forest values (e.g., subsistence, amenity, bequest, and existence values). However, economic base analysis utilizes widely available census data to provide accurate measures of communities dependent on industrial forest activity. This analysis includes Indian reserves and rural census subdivisions previously excluded in studies of economic base dependence. Economic base dependence measures are further improved by including a transfer payment sector. This paper presents findings of forest industry dependence measures using 1991 census data. Results show that including Indian reserves and other rural census subdivisions in the analysis increases the number of forest industry dependent places and population in the Prairie Provinces. The addition of the transfer payment sector to the economic base provides a more comprehensive account of the sources that contribute to the economic diversity of rural locations. In 1996 we initiated a study to evaluate several techniques for measuring light under broadleaf canopies. Hourly average photosynthetic photon flux density and percent transmittance were measured 1 m above the ground at four points in each of three canopy densities created by a spacing experiment in a 35-year-old paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) dominated stand located near Prince George, B.C. At each point, fisheye photographs were taken and LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer (LAI-2000), spherical densiometer, and competition index (Lorimer'sindex) measurements were made. Percent transmittance measurements onan overcast day (1-h average), transmittance measured over periods of 3 h or longer on a clear day, LAI-2000 diffuse noninterceptance measurements, and gap light index determined from fisheye photographs were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance (r2>= 0.96) as was competition index (r2 = 0.928). Concave spherical densiometer measurements and midday percent transmittance measurements on clear days were also well correlated with measured percent transmittance (r2>= 0.89). Estimates of understory light by the LITE model were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance. Correlations improved with increasing length of the period simulated (r2 = 0.755 for a point measurement on a clear day; r2 = 0.936 for an entire sunny day;and, r2 = 0.953 for the entire growing season). Reports that forest policymakers in Canada are considering the allowable cut effect (ACE) as a potential mechanism to provide tenure holders with incentives to practice enhanced forest management. To investigate the incentives created by the ACE, this paper estimates returns to ACE investments for a trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) - white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) mixedwood forest in Alberta. A timber supply model is used to optimize harvesting schedules to maximize net present values over a 200-year planning horizon. A number of scenarios are investigated with variations in intensity of silvicultural investments, beginning age-class distributions, levels of flexibility around the allowable annual cut (AAC), calculations of AACs based on coniferous and mixedwood volumes, and green-up constraints. In our simulations, it was difficult to find positive returns to the ACE. Positive returns only occurred when operating under harvesting constraints with a mature starting forest and AAC calculations that ignored deciduous volumes. In those limited cases where there were positive returns to the ACE, returns were higher for extensive, rather than intensive investments. Combining these results with other potential impediments to the ACE, previously identified in the literature, the probability of tenure holders having incentives to undertake ACE investments is low.

Reports on the measured rates of decomposition at three sites representing the major mixedwood forest types of British Columbia: (i) boreal forests of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), (ii) coastal forests of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), and (iii) a wet interior forest of Douglas-fir, paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Doug. ex Loud.). Mass loss of litter of each species (both pure and in combination with the other species) that was measured in forests of each species to determine (i) if broadleaf litter decomposed faster than needle litter, (ii) if litter decomposed faster in broadleaf or mixedwood forests than in coniferous forests, and (iii) if mixing with broadleaf hastened decomposition of needle litter; Broadleaf litters that decomposed faster than needles during the first year but, thereafter, decomposed more slowly; Litter that tended to decompose faster in the broadleaf forests than in the coniferous forests; No evidence to indicate that the addition of broadleaf litter hastened decomposition of needle litter; Results that indicate that the mixing of needle litter with broadleaf litter is unlikely to hasten decomposition in mixedwood forests of British Columbia.

Quantitative genetic variation in growth, latewood percentage, and wood density was investigated for British Columbia's interior spruce (the common name for white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss; Engelmann spruce, Picea engelmanni Parry ex Engelm.; and their hybrids). The study included 160 half-sib families from the East Kootenay and Prince George regions. At the time of sampling, progeny tests for those two regions were 20 and 22 years old, respectively. Univariate and multivariate restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimates of genetic parameters were obtained. Estimates of genetic variances and heritabilities differed greatly across planting sites for the examined traits, especially after transplantation between the regions. Significant negative genetic correlation between overall growth and wood density was found for the East Kootenay progenies, while negative but nonsignificant genetic correlation between these traits was found for the Prince George progenies. Generally, there was no significant decrease in heritability for ring width and latewood percentage in successive growth rings. A general age trend for genetic correlation between those traits was not apparent, except that the correlation remained negative during the observed period. Our results show that it is not possible to select certain families as superior based on 1-year results because of the family by growing season interactions. The relationship between forest stand composition in southern interior British Columbia and fluorescent pseudomonad bacteria populations was investigated using seedling bioassays. The objectives of this study were to (i) compare the relative population sizes of fluorescent pseudomonads baited from soils in pure paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), pure Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), and mixed stands of the two species and (ii) determine if fluorescent pseudomonads from these soils have inhibitory effects against the root pathogen Armillaria ostoyae (Romagn.) Herink in vitro. Soil from birch stands supported four times more pseudomonads on seedling baits than soil from Douglas-fir stands, with the mixed stands intermediate. Soil from young stands yielded twice as many rhizosphere pseudomonads as soil from mature stands. Pseudomonad population size was positively correlated with percent cover and density of birch, and negatively correlated with basal area of Douglas-fir, percent cover of Douglas-fir, and carbon/nitrogen ratio of the soil. Greater than 50% of the fluorescent isolates reduced radial growth of A. ostoyae by more than 20% and greater than 90% reduced biomass of the fungus in dual culture tests. Cell-free bacterial culture filtrates added to the growth medium also reduced growth of A. ostoyae. This study provides evidence that paper birch provides a more favorable environment for fluorescent pseudomonads than Douglas-fir and suggests a mechanism by which paper birch can positively influence the susceptibility of managed forest stands to Armillaria root disease. Stream temperature impacts resulting from forest harvesting in riparian areas have been documented in a number of locations in North America. As part of the Stuart-Takla Fisheries-Forestry Interaction Project, we have investigated the influence of three variable-retention riparian harvesting prescriptions on temperatures in first-order streams in the interior sub-boreal forests of northern British Columbia. Prescriptions were designed to represent a range of possible harvesting options outlined by the Forest Practices Code of B.C., or associated best management practice guidelines. Five years after the completion of harvesting treatments, temperatures remained four to six degrees warmer, and diurnal temperature variation remained higher than in the control streams regardless of treatment. Initially, the high-retention treatment acted to mitigate the temperature effects of the harvesting, but 3 successive years of windthrow was antecedent to reduced canopy density and equivalent temperature impacts. We speculate that late autumn reversals in the impacts of forest harvesting also occur. Temperature impacts in this study remained within the tolerance limits of local biota. However, even modest temperature changes could alter insect production, egg incubation, fish rearing, migration timing, and susceptibility to disease, and the effects of large changes to daily temperature range are not well understood. This study examined water temperature patterns and their physical controls for two small, clearing-heated streams in shaded reaches downstream of all forestry activity. Field observations were made during July-August 2000 in the central interior of British Columbia, Canada. For both reaches, downstream cooling of up to 4 Celsius had been observed during daytime over distances of ∼ 200 m. Radiative and convective exchanges of energy at heavily shaded sites on both reaches represented a net input of heat during most afternoons and therefore could not explain the observed cooling. In one stream, the greatest downstream cooling occurred when streamflow at the upstream site dropped below about 5 L · s[sup-1]. At those times, temperatures at the downstream site were controlled mainly by local inflow of groundwater, because the warmer water from upstream was lost by infiltration in the upper 150 m of the reach. Warming often occurred in the upper subreach, where cool groundwater did not interact with the channel. At the second stream, creek temperature patterns were comparatively stable. Energy balance estimates from one afternoon suggested that groundwater inflow caused about 40% of the ∼ 3 Celsius gross cooling effect in the daily maximum temperature, whereas bed heat conduction and hyporheic exchange caused about 60%. Much of the future timber supply in the Northern Hemisphere will come from boreal and sub-boreal forests, yet there has been little investigation of how aquatic communities in these regions would be affected by logging. We conducted an empirical, comparative study to investigate the effects of streamside clear-cut logging on benthic macroinvertebrates, algal standing stock, and in-stream physical and chemical habitats in the sub-boreal central interior region of British Columbia. We found that streams that flowed through old-growth forests (sites termed "not logged") did not differ from streams flowing through older logged forests (where the riparian zones were harvested 20-25 years before our sampling; sites termed "older logged") with respect to macroinvertebrate total density or biomass, feeding guild density or biomass, and chlorophyll a biomass. However, streams flowing through newly logged forests (where the riparian zones were harvested within 5 years of our sampling; sites termed "recently logged") had nearly twice the macroinvertebrate biomass as those in not logged or older logged sites and higher chlorophyll a biomass. There were no differences among the three stream categories in regard to structural aspects of the physical habitat (e.g., substrate composition, large organic debris density, dimensions of pools and riffles). Streamside logging in sub-boreal forests appears to enhance primary and secondary production, but this phenomenon may only be evident for the first two decades following logging. Headwater streams, varying in flow persistence from ephemeral to intermittent to perennial, provide the tightest coupling between water and land, yet they often receive the least protection during forest management. We described communities of aquatic insects in perennial, intermittent, and ephemeral channels surrounded by old-growth forest and 4- to 8-year-old clearcuts in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, to determine whether temporary streams have unique aquatic communities and to examine the short-term impacts of harvesting. We measured flow persistence, stream size, canopy cover, organic detritus, and algal biomass in 19 streams. We sampled aquatic invertebrates with a combination of emergence cages and kicknet samples. Temporary and old-growth streams had more organic detritus and a higher abundance of shredders. Perennial and clearcut streams had a higher abundance of some algal grazers, but not higher algal biomass. Insect richness was similar in intermittent and perennial streams of each seral stage but lower in ephemeral streams. Intermittent streams contained four taxa not found in the other stream classes; perennial and ephemeral streams had none. Communities of aquatic insects differed between streams surrounded by clearcuts and old growth, and varied with continuity of flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Site preparation alleviates the effects of pinegrass (Calamagrostis rubescens Buckl.) interference on conifers in British Columbia, but little is known about interference mechanisms and appropriate site preparation methods for steep slopes. In this study, lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) was planted in pinegrass controls and small (90 x 90 cm) and large (180 x 90 cm) patches where (i) only pinegrass was removed using glyphosate or (ii) both pinegrass and the forest floor were removed using an excavator. Treatments were replicated three times in east- and west-facing clearcuts and effects were followed for 9 years. Two-year pine survival was 78% in the control and >97% in large patches. All patch treatments improved pine growth, but it was greatest in large chemical patches during the initial 6 years and in both large patch treatments thereafter. Removal of the forest floor reduced foliar and soil nutrients, increased bulk density and soil water availability, decreased porosity and aggregate stability, and reduced ectomycorrhizal diversity and richness. These changes were not observed in chemical patches. All patch treatments increased soil temperatures and reduced frost relative to controls, but more so in large patches. Pinegrass can suppress early pine performance, and large chemical patches that retain the forest floor are best for relieving the multiple environmental stressors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of partial and clear-cut harvesting on forest floor physical, chemical, and biological properties, forest floor mesofauna, and nutrient cycling were investigated in conifer- and deciduous-dominated stands of Alberta's mixedwood boreal forest. Forest floor samples were collected 2.5 years after harvest from clearcuts, strip-cut corridors in a partial cut, green tree retention patches in a partial cut, and uncut control sites. Partial cuts showed intermediate decreases in annual litter input and NH[sub 4] -N between uncut and clear-cut sites of both the deciduous and conifer stands, as did microbial biomass, PO[sub 4] -P, mesofauna abundance (total, Acari, and Collembola), and fine root biomass in the conifer stands. In the deciduous stands, microbial biomass and fine root biomass in partial- and clear-cut treatments were not significantly different, but were significantly reduced compared with the uncut controls. Mesofauna abundance was reduced in the corridors of the partial-cut treatment compared with partial-cut patch, clear-cut, and uncut treatments. In both deciduous and conifer stands, NO[sub 3] -N was elevated in the partial-cut corridors and clearcuts compared with partial-cut patch and uncut treatments. Findings from this study show that negative impact to forest floor properties associated with clear-cut harvesting may be reduced in partial-cut harvesting systems.Les effets de la coupe à blanc et de la coupe partielle sur les propriétés physiques, chimiques et biologiques de la couverture morte, sur la mésofaune de la couverture morte et sur le recyclage des nutriments ont été étudiés dans des peuplements dominés soit par des conifères, soit par des feuillus, dans la forêt mixte boréale de l'Alberta. The Canadian boreal logging industry has attracted little or no attention from economic researchers in spite of its importance for the competitiveness and long-term survival of other forest-based industries. This article uses a panel data set covering the period from 1977 to 1995 to analyze technical efficiency, technical change, and total factor productivity growth in the logging industries for six boreal provinces. The production technology is represented using a data envelopment analysis model. A transitive measure of productivity change that combines technical progress and changes in the degree of productive efficiency is computed. The empirical investigation reveals that logging activities in the boreal region are characterized by substantial efficiency differentials among the regions. Results from a Tobit analysis of efficiency differentials indicate that forest resource characteristics such as forest density and proportion of hardwood production were found to have positive effects. There was also evidence of significant positive scale effects. Engineering construction per area seems to be negatively related to efficiency. Asymbiotic nitrogenase activity in coarse woody debris was measured using the acetylene reduction assay under ambient conditions in three different stand ages (5, 53, and 88 years old) of an unmanaged second-growth Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg. – Abies amabilis (Dougl. ex Loud.) Dougl. ex J. Forbes forest type and a Thuja plicata Donn. ex D. Don – Tsuga heterophylla old-growth forest on northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Four different decay classes of coarse woody debris, different species in the early decay stages, and sapwood and heart wood were sampled separately. Mean nitrogenase activity ranged between 1.3 and 19.5 nmolC[sub 2] H[sub 4] ·d[sup –1] ·(g dry mass)[sup –1] , with an overall mean of 5.7. High variability of the activity rates between logs and within logs was observed in all four stands. Mean activity rates were, in most cases, significantly different between decay classes, with generally increasing nitrogenase activity with the progress of decay. Moisture content of the samples was a good predictor of nitrogenase activity and could explain differences between decay classes. Only minor differences in nitrogenase activity were found between the different stands. Estimates of nitrogen fixation ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 kg N·ha[sup –1] ·year[sup –1] , the magnitude of these values depending more on the mass of coarse woody debris substrate available for asymbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria (103–158 t·ha[sup –1] in this study) than on differences in nitrogenase activity rates. Soluble organic N (SON) is recognized to be a source of N for plants, but the few studies of the effects of clear-cut harvesting on SON levels have reported inconsistent results. SON and soluble inorganic N (SIN) contents were measured in 1 mol/L KCl extracts of soil from forests and clearcuts in coastal cedar–hemlock forests near Port McNeill, B.C., and in high-elevation spruce–fir forests near Sicamous, B.C. To characterize the seedling root environment, sampling was confined to the top 20 cm of soil (consisting of forest floor at Port McNeill and forest floor plus mineral soil at Sicamous). Amino acid N and microbial N were determined on subsets of the samples. At both sites, SON content tended to be lower in clearcuts than in forests. Lower SON contents in clearcuts were caused by the removal of F-layer forest floor at Port McNeill and by reduced SON concentrations in the forest floor at Sicamous. Correlation analyses indicated close relationships between moisture content, SIN, SON, and microbial N. Changes in SON, SIN, and microbial N concentrations during buried bag incubations could not be explained simply by exchange among these three N pools. The 6-year effects of differing levels of Sitka alder (Alnus viridus spp. sinuata (Regel) Á. Löve & D. Löve) retention (0, 500, 1000, and 2000 clumps/ha) on the development of retained alder and on the growth and foliar nutrition of 7-year-old naturally regenerated lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) were evaluated in a sub-boreal ecosystem in the central interior of British Columbia. Alder development was inversely related to alder retention density, with the largest height and crown width increments occurring at the lowest alder densities. Low to moderate levels of alder cover did not significantly inhibit the diameter or height growth of lodgepole pine. Even under high alder cover, growth was not reduced until alder cover exceeded 45%. Over the 6-year response period, lodgepole pine diameter and height increments under high alder cover were reduced by 10% and 12%, respectively, relative to the no-alder treatment. The effect of alder density on lodgepole pine foliar N was strongly linear, with the highest N levels measured in the high alder retention treatment. However, the positive impact of alder retention on foliar N resulted in probable imbalance of N relative to S and possibly P and K. Unless alleviated, nutritional imbalances may preclude reliable assessment of the competitive effects (i.e., light and soil resources) of alder density, if any, on lodgepole pine growth.Six ans après avoir conservé différentes densités d'aulne vert (Alnus viridus spp. sinuata (Regel) Á. The 20-year successional development of understory vegetation was investigated in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) plantations in northern Ontario, in relation to stand species composition, species diversity, and the rate of change in stands of different post-disturbance ages. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) ordination of plantation stands using species composition data from 1978 and 1998 indicated variation among stands in directions and rates of change in species composition over time. Rank correlations of environmental variables with the DCA axes suggested a light–moisture gradient along the first axis, driven by soil texture and overstory species, and a gradient representing time since disturbance and stand development along the second axis. Although overall beta diversity among stands remained constant over time, some convergence was found among a smaller group of stands, and divergence was noted between spruce and pine stands. Species composition also became more highly correlated with environmental variables through time. From 1978 to 1998, species richness increased in young, dry pine stands; decreased in older, dry pine stands; and decreased in young spruce stands. The understory vegetation in stands on mesic sites was more diverse than that on dry, sandy sites at both times. The rate of change in understory species composition slowed with time after disturbance, indicating an increasing stability in micro en vi ron men tal conditions as the influence of harvesting disturbance became weaker with time.Le développement sur une période de 20 ans de la succession de la végétation de sous-étage a été étudié dans des plantations de pin gris (Pinusbanksiana Lamb.) et d'épinette noire (Piceamariana (Mill.) In response to a broad public concern about the rapidly diminishing area of old-growth forests and their intrinsic biological value, the Canadian Forest Service organized a national symposium in 2001 to discuss the old-growth issue from a science perspective. The objectives were: (i) to bring together Canadian expertise on old-growth forests, (ii) to define old growth within the main forest regions of Canada, (iii) to understand its biological complexities and ecological roles, and (iv) to discuss management and restoration experiences and options. Some forest regions of Canada still contain significant old-growth forest (e.g., some boreal forest regions), although other regions contain very little primary, relatively undisturbed, older forest (e.g., eastern temperate-zone forest regions). One of the difficulties in managing and conserving old-growth forests is defining them in a scientifically meaningful, yet operational and policy-relevant manner. This difficulty may be overcome by developing an index of "old-growthness" (Spies and Franklin 1988) related to specific forest regions or forest types. Such an old-growth index would allow for the inclusion of specific attributes, composition, functions, and processes seen as relevant to different ecological regions or specific forest types and could serve as a basis for prioritizing local or regional conservation and management activities. Thus, such an index approach has worldwide applicability. Traditionally, old-growth forests have been valued primarily as habitat for forest-dependent, specifically old-growth-dependent, wildlife. Recent results from research on old-growth forests in eastern Canada suggest that as tree populations age they tend to increase in genetic diversity and reproductive fitness, suggesting that old-growth forests may serve as natural reservoirs of genetic diversity and reproductive fitness for the constituent tree species. This has important implications for the dispersal and adaptation of trees across increasingly fragmented forest landscapes subject to the anticipated rapid climatic changes and the introduction of new pest and disease problems. Old-growth conservation goes well beyond the more traditional areas of watershed (including water quality) and habitat protection and includes emerging issues such as the conservation of genetic resources and carbon sequestration. It is very much a cross-sectoral issue with many interdisciplinary linkages. Therefore, conservation and protection of old-growth forests should be of wide general interest to the forest sector. Wet boreal forests occur primarily in Atlantic Canada especially in Newfoundland, but examples are also found in Quebec and the northeastern U.S.A. These forests are dominated by balsam fir (Abies balsamea), which is susceptible to fire but flourishes in wetter environments where fire is absent. The major stand disturbances are caused by insects, primarily spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) and hemlock looper (Lambdina fiscellaria), followed by root rots and blowdown. Stands in Newfoundland were characterized by large amounts of dead standing and fallen wood, as a result of self-thinning processes and insect attacks. A comparison of 40-, 60-, and >= 80-year-old forests in Newfoundland indicated that the oldest stage of balsam fir forests had a distinctly different structure, including more large dead and fallen wood, a more irregular canopy including gaps, a more diverse ground flora, more moss ground cover, a more variable tree height, taller snags, fewer white birch snags, and fewer deciduous small trees. These differences were reflected in various plant and animal faunas that were distinct in the old forest including: flowering plants, beetles, Collembola, oribatid mites, mammals, and birds. Several species of plants and animals were only found in the oldest forest stands, including a high percentage among the arthropods. Suggested indicator species at the stand level include black-backed woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) and marten (Martes americana). Logging results in a larger mean patch size than that caused by natural insect disturbances, possibly affecting dispersal by soil organisms and plants within the new landscape. A portion of the landscape, keyed to species with the largest area requirements to maintain their populations, including marten, black-backed woodpeckers, and (or) boreal owls (Aegolius funereus) could guide the amount of old forest, and individual patch sizes, required across a landscape over time. Ces différences se reflètent dans diverses composantes de la flore et de la faune qui sont distinctes dans la vieille forêt (plantes à fleurs, coléoptères, collemboles, acariens oribates, mammifères et oiseaux, entre autres). Old-growth black spruce (Picea mariana) boreal forest in the Clay Belt region of Ontario and Quebec is an open forest with a low canopy, quite different from what many consider to be "old growth". Here, we provide an overview of the characteristics of old-growth black spruce forest for three different site types on organic, clay, and coarse deposits. Our objectives were (1) to identify the extent of older forests; (2) to describe the structure, composition, and diversity in different age classes; and (3) to identify key processes in old-growth black spruce forest. We sampled canopy composition, deadwood abundance, understorey composition, and nonvascular plant species in 91 forest stands along a chronosequence that extended from 20 to more than 250 years after fire. We used a peak in tree basal area, which occurred at 100 years on clay and coarse sites and at 200 years on organic sites, as a process-based means of defining the start of old-growth forest. Old-growth forests are extensive in the Clay Belt, covering 30–50% of the forested landscape. Black spruce was dominant on all organic sites, and in all older stands. Although there were fewer understorey species and none exclusive to old-growth, these forests were structurally diverse and had greater abundance of Sphagnum, epiphytic lichens, and ericaceous species. Paludification, a process characteristic of old-growth forest stands on clay deposits in this region, causes decreases in tree and deadwood abundance. Old-growth black spruce forests, therefore, lack the large trees and snags that are characteristic of other old-growth forests. Small-scale disturbances such as spruce budworm and windthrow are common, creating numerous gaps. Landscape and stand level management strategies could minimize structural changes caused by harvesting, but unmanaged forest in all stages of development must be preserved in order to conserve all the attributes of old-growth black spruce forest. This paper synthesizes data extracted from the literature and data collected in various studies by the author on the quantity, characteristics, and functional importance of coarse woody debris (CWD) in the old-growth forests of British Columbia (B.C.). There is little agreement in the literature about the minimum diameter of CWD or the number of decay classes recognized. In western North America, five decay classes are commonly used, but recent studies suggest fewer decay classes are preferable. Comparisons among decay classes and biogeoclimatic zones and subzones in B.C. reveal that quantities and volumes are greatest (up to approximately 60 kg/m[sup 2] and approximately 1800 m[sup 3] /ha, respectively), and CWD persists the longest (sometimes in excess of 1000 years) in the Coastal Western Hemlock (CWH) biogeoclimatic zone. The quantity and ground cover of CWD increase with forest productivity. Persistence of CWD has varied from less than 100 to over 800 years in two coastal (CWH and Mountain Hemlock (MH)) and three interior (Interior Douglas-fir (IDF), Interior Cedar–Hemlock (ICH), and Engelmann Spruce – Subalpine Fir (ESSF)) biogeoclimatic zones. Trends in CWD quantity with forest age in managed coastal B.C. forests suggest a U-shaped curve, with greater quantities occurring in recent cutovers than in old-growth forests, and lowest quantities occurring in middle-aged forests. This may be the normal trend in CWD with forest age, with departures from this trend resulting from disturbance- or environment-specific factors. Relatively large amounts of data exist on the characteristics of CWD in the CWH, IDF, ICH, ESSF, and Boreal White and Black Spruce (BWBS) biogeoclimatic zones, but such data for the Coastal Douglas-fir, Sub-Boreal Pine–Spruce, Sub-Boreal Spruce (SBS), and Spruce–Willow–Birch biogeoclimatic zones appear relatively sparse. There have been few studies of the functional role of CWD in B.C. forests, but those studies that have been completed indicate that CWD is an important habitat component for some plant and animal species. A total of 169 plant species, including >95% of all lichens and liverworts, were found to grow on CWD in old-growth forests in the CWH, MH, IDF, ICH, and ESSF biogeoclimatic zones. One third of these species were restricted to CWD. Studies in several biogeoclimatic zones have found that CWD provided preferred habitat for and was associated with higher populations of some small animal species, such as shrews, some voles, and some salamanders, in old-growth forests, but the effects varied with species and biogeoclimatic zone. The nutrient cycling role of CWD is not yet well known, but it currently appears to be relatively insignificant in B.C. old-growth forests. Although it has been considered that CWD could increase mineral soil acidification and eluviation, no evidence for this was found in a study of the CWH, MH, IDF, ICH, ESSF, BWBS, and SBS biogeoclimatic zones. Future studies of the functional role of CWD should consider both scale (square metre vs. hectare) and temporal (changes in CWD with forest age) issues, as studies including these are sparse and both may be important. Dans la littérature, on ne s'entend pas sur le diamètre minimum des DLG, ou le nombre de classes de décomposition. Dans l'ouest de l'Amérique du Nord, on emploie le plus souvent cinq classes, mais des études récentes portent à croire qu'un nombre de classes inférieur serait préférable. Les comparaisons entre les classes de décomposition et les zones et sous-zones biogéoclimatiques de la C.-B. révèlent que les DLG sont plus abondants (pouvant atteindre environ 60 kg/m[sup 2] et 1800 m[sup 3] /ha) et persistent le plus longtemps (parfois pendant plus de 1000 ans) dans la zone biogéoclimatique cótière de la pruche de l'Ouest (CWH). L'abondance des DLG et la superficie de sol qu'ils couvrent augmentent avec la productivité de la forêt. La persistance des DLG varie de moins de 100 ans à plus de 800 ans dans cinq zones biogéoclimatiques : deux zones côtières (la CWH et la zone de la pruche subalpine (MH)) et trois zones intérieures (celle du douglas taxifolié de l'intérieur (IDF), celle des cèdres et des pruches de l'intérieur (ICH) et celle de l'épinette d'Engelmann et du sapin subalpin (ESSF)). Dans les forêts côtières aménagées de la C.-B., l'abondance des DLG en fonction de l'âge de la forêt suivrait une courbe en U, les débris étant plus abondants sur les parterres de coupe récents que dans les forêts anciennes, et moins abondants dans les forêts d'âge moyen. Cette relation entre les DLG et l'âge de la forêt est peut-être la tendance normale, et les écarts par rapport à celle-ci pourraient être le résultat de facteurs propres à chaque perturbation ou milieu. Il existe beaucoup de données sur les caractéristiques des DLG dans la CWH, la IDF, la ICH, la ESSF et la zone boréale des épinettes blanche et noire (BWBS), mais il en existe relativement peu pour la zone côtière du douglas taxifolié, la zone subboréale des pins et des épinettes, la zone subboréale de l'épinette (SBS) et la zone de l'épinette, du saule et du bouleau. On a recensé 169 espèces végétales poussant sur ces débris, dont plus de 95 % de tous les lichens et hépatiques, dans les forêts anciennes de la CWH, de la MH, de la IDF, de la ICH et de la ESSF. Mosses and hepatics (bryophytes) are the most diverse and abundant understorey vegetation within the Coastal Western Hemlock (CWH) and Interior Cedar–Hemlock (ICH) zones of British Columbia. This study intensively sampled bryophytes in 287 young- and old-growth stands in the CWH and ICH zones. Two major variables strongly influence the patterning of bryophyte diversity in these zones: stand age and habitat heterogeneity. Canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) identified these as the most important variables explaining stand–environment interactions. Alpha diversity is much greater in old-growth forests and beta diversity is high between young and old forests. Old-growth cedar–hemlock forests have between 60 (ICH) and 100% (CWH) more species than younger forests disturbed by wildfire in the ICH zones or logging in the CWH zones. Furthermore, a stand classification built on species composition partitioned species into stands of different ages and mesohabitat heterogeneity. Beta diversity was also partitioned between stands of different ages and habitat heterogeneity. This indicates that both young and old forests have a unique assemblage of species. Indicator analysis was used to choose a partial lists of species that are indicators of "old growthness". These old forests support a rich flora of hepatics and rare western North American endemics. High environmental continuity is associated with the most humid watersheds and cedar–hemlock forests within these watersheds have the highest bryophyte diversity. The establishment of rich communities of bryophytes in the moist cedar–hemlock forest has been occurring over the last 2000–7000 years, with the coastal rainforest much older than the inland rainforest. Large-scale disturbance, such as forestry, threatens the existence of these highly diverse communities. A better understanding of the patterning of bryophyte diversity will provide an opportunity to minimize the impact of forest operations on biodiversity. Bryophyte diversity in British Columbia cedar–hemlock forests will be sustained through ecosystem management of old-growth legacies (i.e., landscapes, stands, and their components) and preservation of areas of high diversity. Temporal and habitat variables are influential in the patterning of bryophyte diversity. Management plans that consider these variables will be better equipped to manage cedar–hemlock forests for maintaining biodiversity. Cette étude a comporté un échantillonnage intensif des bryophytes dans 287 peuplements jeunes et anciens de ces deux zones. Deux variables y exercent une influence majeure sur le patron de répartition de la diversité des bryophytes : l'âge des peuplements et l'hétérogénéité des habitats. Des analyses canoniques des correspondances (ACC) ont indiqué qu'il s'agissait des plus importantes variables pour expliquer les interactions peuplement–environnement. La diversité alpha est beaucoup plus grande dans les forêts anciennes, et la diversité bêta est élevée entre les forêts jeunes et les forêts vieilles. Les forêts anciennes de thuya et de pruche comptent entre 60 % (ICH) et 100 % (CWH) plus d'espèces que les forêts plus jeunes perturbées par un incendie dans la zone ICH ou une récolte dans CWH. De plus, une classification des peuplements reposant sur la composition en espèces a fourni une répartition de la richesse en espèces entre peuplements ayant différentes caractéristiques d'âge et d'hétérogénéité des mesohabitats. La diversité bêta a aussi été répartie entre peuplements ayant différentes caractéristiques. Il ressort que la jeune forêt et la vieille forêt ont toutes deux un assemblage unique d'espèces. Une analyse a été effectuée pour établir une liste partielle d'espèces indicatrices d' « ancienneté ». Les vieilles forêts étudiées abritent une flore riche en hépatiques et en espèces endémiques rares de l'Ouest de l'Amérique du Nord. Une grande continuité de l'environnement est associée aux bassins versants les plus humides, et les forêts de thuya et de pruche de ces bassins renferment la plus forte diversité en bryophytes. L'établissement de riches communautés de bryophytes dans la forêt humide de thuya et de pruche se poursuit depuis des milliers d'années, de 2000 à 7000 ans, la forêt ombrophile côtière étant beaucoup plus âgée que la forêt ombrophile intérieure. Les perturbations de grande échelle, comme l'exploitation forestière, menacent l'existence de ces communautés de grande diversité. Une meilleure compréhension du patron de répartition de la diversité des bryophytes aidera à limiter l'impact des opérations forestières sur la biodiversité. La diversité des bryophytes dans les forêts de thuya et de pruche de la Colombie-Britannique pourra être maintenue en aménageant à l'échelle de l'écosystème les vestiges des forêts anciennes (c.-à-d. paysages, peuplements et leurs composantes) et en préservant des zones à forte diversité.
