In several gymnosperm tree species of the circumboreal forest, reproductive development is closely associated with the accumulation of degree-days during the growing season. We wanted to verify whether this pattern holds for a widespread angiosperm species such as paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh), a broadleaf tree distributed throughout the North American boreal forest. Stations to simultaneously measure the thermal sum (degree-days > 5 °C, DD) and the reproductive development (anatomical development and seed germination) were installed in four sites along an altitudinal thermal gradient totalling 541 m a.s.l. in the eastern Appalachian Mountains (Canada). In 2004, sites 1, 2, 3 and 4, received 973, 1099, 1266 and 1359 DD, respectively. A strong relationship was found between thermal sum and reproductive development (anatomical development: r2 > 0.90; seed germination r2 > 0.72). This relationship seems to be based on the absolute value of heat-sum received because (i) rates of reproductive development are twice as high in colder sites (1 and 2) than in warmer sites (3 and 4), and (ii) total seed germination did not differ among the sites. Along with this, we noted a lesser production of full seeds in colder sites, coupled with a higher success of germination in the coldest site (site 1), which appears to be a mechanism of phenotypic adaptation to cold. Mexican temperate forests, at the southernmost end of the distribution range of this ecosystem, are the world's centre of diversity of pine and oak, with 55 and 161 species, respectively. Such forests are threatened by land-use change, unsustainable forest management practices, and climate change; these threats reduce their diversity, alter the distribution ranges of species, modify disturbance regimes, and reduce ecosystem adaptability. This paper briefly reviews ( i) the ecology of the Mexican temperate forests, ( ii) the ecological basis for the unique diversity of pine and oak species, ( iii) the main disturbances as well as the main drivers of global changes affecting these forests, in particular climate change, and ( iv) the social, economic, and cultural factors to be considered in proposing a new forest management approach. It proposes a new conceptual framework to manage Mexican temperate forests that are in line with ( i) their natural dynamics, ( ii) the rapidly changing and uncertain global environmental, social, and economic conditions, and ( iii) the complex adaptive system approach. This new forest management combines functional zoning, multispecies plantations, and sylvicultural interventions to increase the adaptive capacity of forests as a way to balance the increasing need for timber products with the need for other ecosystem services facing rapidly changing and uncertain future environmental, social, and economic conditions. The uniform angle index (UAI) is used to characterize the spatial distribution of a forest community or of individual tree species within that community. This study presents an empirical assessment of the performance of a new statistical test used in conjunction with the UAI. In this study, the UAI is applied to observed and simulated communities. The effect of plot size and density are examined and the results are compared with the criteria of the aggregation index R of Clark and Evan (CE-R) and Ripley's L function (RL). The results suggest that the UAI performs well in determining a particular class of spatial pattern and that, in contrast to the CE-R index, it is unaffected by population density because the standard deviation can be estimated when the density is known using a new empirical relationship presented in this paper. The results of this study represent an improvement in the development of the UAI, verifying its performance and confirming its overall utility. Our comparative analysis positions the UAI among its historical competitors, the CE-R and RL criteria. The UAI index, which does not require expensive mapping of tree positions, can produce results that are equivalent to those obtained by RL and more robust and reliable than those obtained by CE-R. Site index prediction models are an important aid for forest management and planning activities. This paper introduces a multiple regression model for spatially mapping and comparing site indices for two Pinus species (Pinus elliottii Engelm. and Queensland hybrid, a P. elliottii × Pinus caribaea Morelet hybrid) based on independent variables derived from two major sources: γ-ray spectrometry (potassium (K), thorium (Th), and uranium (U)) and a digital elevation model (elevation, slope, curvature, hillshade, flow accumulation, and distance to streams). In addition, interpolated rainfall was tested. Species were coded as a dichotomous dummy variable; interaction effects between species and the γ-ray spectrometric and geomorphologic variables were considered. The model explained up to 60% of the variance of site index and the standard error of estimate was 1.9 m. Uranium, elevation, distance to streams, thorium, and flow accumulation significantly correlate to the spatial variation of the site index of both species, and hillshade, curvature, elevation and slope accounted for the extra variability of one species over the other. The predicted site indices varied between 20.0 and 27.3 m for P. elliottii, and between 23.1 and 33.1 m for Queensland hybrid; the advantage of Queensland hybrid over P. elliottii ranged from 1.8 to 6.8 m, with the mean at 4.0 m. This compartment-based prediction and comparison study provides not only an overview of forest productivity of the whole plantation area studied but also a management tool at compartment scale. Single-tree selection has been employed widely in northern Japanese mixed forests, but management-induced changes in forests are not well understood. This study examined demographic parameters of major tree species during a 20-year study of a 68 ha stand in which single-tree selection has been conducted since 1971. Results showed that growth and survival of conifers (mostly Abies sachalinensis (Fr. Schm.) Masters) was the most strongly positively affected by the treatment. Nevertheless, recruitment of conifers was not sufficiently improved, suggesting their decreased dominance over the longer term. Instead, shade-intolerant broad-leaved species (mainly Betula ermanii Cham.) will gradually increase because of their higher recruitment rates after the treatment. Shade-tolerant broad-leaved species (mainly Acer mono Maxim. and Tilia japonica (Miq.) Simonkai) appeared to experience the most distinct negative effects, especially on survival. These trends differed markedly from those reported in previous papers concerning partial harvesting systems, which predicted an increase in dominance of shade-tolerant species. The results shown here should be generalized carefully because we have investigated only one stand without repetition of the control area. Nevertheless, trends described in this large-scale, long-term study could provide a basis for simulating stand dynamics. We studied community development and mortality among tree species at multiple spatial scales in a 236-year mixedwood chronosequence at Lake Duparquet, Quebec. Spatial relationships, species associations, and understory–overstory replacement patterns were studied using spatial statistics, patch indices, G tests, and transition matrices. Results of these analyses showed that shade-intolerant and shade-tolerant tree communities formed increasingly fine-grained patches in midsuccession. These fine-grained associations appear to be partly due to suppressed stems being released into a slowly thinning canopy and partly due to new recruitment of shade-tolerant conifers. In 1-ha plots, tree species richness and evenness peaked in 25-, 100-, and 400-m2 subplots during midsuccession. Forest cover type diversity also peaked in midsuccessional landscapes assessed using aerial photographs. The oldest 1-ha plot was dominated by monospecific patches of eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.), which was the most likely replacement for live and dead trees and the most abundant species in the numerous subplots that were occupied by trees smaller than 8 cm DBH. In spite of this dominance, long-lived paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) and residual fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) seedlings may maintain the mixedwood character of this stand into the future. The implications of our findings for stand management and conservation are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many aspects of temporal variation in tree seed production (e.g., the proability distribution, periodicity, uni modality) are poorly understood. In this paper, we used 32 annual seed production records from 22 species to show that there are no discernible endogenous cycles, and there is a modest (but seldom significant) tendency for a high seed production year to be followed by an unusually low production year. Finally, we found that all of the records conformed to a single lognormal probability distribution, although our ability to discriminate among species, given short and extremely variable records, is admittedly very limited. We used the lognormal to develop the distribution of the sums of local seed production events (summed across 4 years) as an aid in predicting postharvest or postfire tree regeneration success. Our conclusion is that reliable (defined as 90% of the time) adequate stocking at the edge of an area source requires that the species of interest must comprise a very large fraction of the total basal area per area. Indeed, if the species constitutes less than about 50% of the source, neither burns nor even very narrow strip cuts will be reliably stocked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
