Presents a study that examined the role of papermill sludge in the organic forest carbon cycle of paper products. Prediction on the global production of papermill sludge; Impact of paper production and wastepaper recycling trends on the woody carbon components of sludge; Implications of the organic content and carbon content of sludge for dealing with disposal policy and problems.

Normal paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) wood has a clear and uniform color. However, some paper birch trees contain reddish-brown-, discolored wood known as red heartwood. Its occurrence, proportion, and vertical distribution were investigated. One hundred and fifty trees were randomly sampled from three stands located at the Montmorency Forest, 75 km north of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. A subsample of 18 trees showing occurrence of red heartwood at stump height were felled, and 5 cm thick disks were cut at every 0.5 m of height. Red heartwood volume, proportion, and vertical distribution were determined from the disks. Trees with larger diameter at breast height and lower tree height had a higher probability of red heartwood occurrence. Red heartwood starts occurring in 40-year-old trees on average in the stands studied. The volume of red heartwood was positively correlated with tree age, and the proportion of red heartwood was positively related to tree age, and negatively related to the amount of sunlight on the live crown. Red heartwood proportion was 13.3% of the tree merchantable volume, mostly located under the live crown. Le bois de bouleau à papier (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) est normalement clair et uniforme. Toutefois, le bois de couleur brun-rougeâtre présent chez certains bouleaux est appelé cœur rouge. Sa présence, sa proportion et sa distribution verticale dans l’arbre ont été étudiées. Cent cinquante arbres furent sélectionnés aléatoirement dans trois peuplements de la Forêt Montmorency à 75 km au nord de la ville de Québec, Québec, Canada. Un sous-échantillon de 18 arbres présentant du cœur rouge à hauteur de souche ont été abattus et découpés en disques de 5 cm d’épaisseur à tous les 5 m afin de mesurer le volume, la proportion et la distribution verticale du cœur rouge. La probabilité de présence de cœur rouge était plus élevée chez les arbres petits et de fort diamètre. Le cœur rouge était présent dans les arbres de 40 ans et plus en moyenne dans les peuplements étudiés. Le volume de cœur rouge était corrélé positivement avec l’âge de l’arbre. The relationship between forest stand composition in southern interior British Columbia and fluorescent pseudomonad bacteria populations was investigated using seedling bioassays. The objectives of this study were to (i) compare the relative population sizes of fluorescent pseudomonads baited from soils in pure paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), pure Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), and mixed stands of the two species and (ii) determine if fluorescent pseudomonads from these soils have inhibitory effects against the root pathogen Armillaria ostoyae (Romagn.) Herink in vitro. Soil from birch stands supported four times more pseudomonads on seedling baits than soil from Douglas-fir stands, with the mixed stands intermediate. Soil from young stands yielded twice as many rhizosphere pseudomonads as soil from mature stands. Pseudomonad population size was positively correlated with percent cover and density of birch, and negatively correlated with basal area of Douglas-fir, percent cover of Douglas-fir, and carbon/nitrogen ratio of the soil. Greater than 50% of the fluorescent isolates reduced radial growth of A. ostoyae by more than 20% and greater than 90% reduced biomass of the fungus in dual culture tests. Cell-free bacterial culture filtrates added to the growth medium also reduced growth of A. ostoyae. This study provides evidence that paper birch provides a more favorable environment for fluorescent pseudomonads than Douglas-fir and suggests a mechanism by which paper birch can positively influence the susceptibility of managed forest stands to Armillaria root disease. Reports on the measured rates of decomposition at three sites representing the major mixedwood forest types of British Columbia: (i) boreal forests of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), (ii) coastal forests of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), and (iii) a wet interior forest of Douglas-fir, paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Doug. ex Loud.). Mass loss of litter of each species (both pure and in combination with the other species) that was measured in forests of each species to determine (i) if broadleaf litter decomposed faster than needle litter, (ii) if litter decomposed faster in broadleaf or mixedwood forests than in coniferous forests, and (iii) if mixing with broadleaf hastened decomposition of needle litter; Broadleaf litters that decomposed faster than needles during the first year but, thereafter, decomposed more slowly; Litter that tended to decompose faster in the broadleaf forests than in the coniferous forests; No evidence to indicate that the addition of broadleaf litter hastened decomposition of needle litter; Results that indicate that the mixing of needle litter with broadleaf litter is unlikely to hasten decomposition in mixedwood forests of British Columbia.

Reports on the incubation of forest floor samples from a three tree species (Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.), and paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.)). Rates of N mineralization in the forest floors of Douglas-fir that was significantly greater than either birch or lodgepole pine; Douglas-fir forest floors that also mineralized more N per unit of either N or C than the other species; Nitrogen mineralization rates that were positively correlated with the N concentration of the forest floor; Nitrogen concentration of foliar litter that were poor predictors of N mineralization rates resulting from Douglas-fir litter having the lowest N concentrations in litter but the highest rates of net N mineralization in the forest floor; Nitrogen mineralization in the forest floor that was negatively correlated with the lignin concentration in foliar litter; Douglas-fir litter that had low lignin concentrations, which may allow more of the mineralized N to remain in inorganic forms rather than being bound in humus; Results that suggest that a component of Douglas-fir might improve N availability in coniferous forest floors.

The current spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby) epidemic in interior Alaska is leaving large expanses of dead spruce with little spruce regeneration. Many of these areas are habitat for moose(Alces alces). To establish spruce regeneration and improve browse production for moose, paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh), willow (Salix spp.), and three stocktypes (plug+1 bareroot, and 1+0 plugs fromtwo nurseries) of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) were planted in freshly cutover areas on Fort Richardson, near Anchorage. Four vegetation-management treatments were compared: broadcast site preparation with herbicides, banded site preparation with herbicides, mechanical scarification, and untreated control. Spruce seedlings had the greatest growth in the broadcast site preparation treatment (p < 0.01). Stocktype was the most important factor in spruce growth, with bareroot transplant seedlings being the tallest and largest 5 years after planting (p < 0.001). In the first 3 years, relative stem volume growth was greater for plug seedlings than for bareroot seedlings (p < 0.001). By year 4, relative growth rates were similar among all stocktypes. Treatment effects for paper birch and willow were confoundedby moose browsing. Results indicate spruce can be regenerated and moose browse enhanced simultaneously in forests in interior Alaska. Variation in canopy composition can influence ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling and light transmittance, even when environmental soil conditions are similar. To determine whether forest cover type influences species composition of the understory vegetation (herbs and shrubs), the composition of this layer was studied on two different surface deposits, clay and till, and under four different forest cover types dominated, respectively, by Populus tremuloïdes Michx. (aspen), Betula papyrifera Marsh. (white birch), Pinus banksiana Lamb. (jack pine), and Picea glauca (Moench) Voss – Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (spruce–fir) over similar environmental conditions. Detrended correspondence analysis and analysis of variance performed on the ordination scores revealed that understory plant composition was highly affected by surface deposit and forest cover. The gradient observed in the correspondence analysis proceeds from aspen, white birch, spruce–fir, to jack pine. Indicator species were identified for each surface deposit and cover type, and most of them were associated with either jack pine or aspen. The richness, evenness, and diversity of the understory vegetation did not vary between cover types, but were affected by surface deposit. In 1996 we initiated a study to evaluate several techniques for measuring light under broadleaf canopies. Hourly average photosynthetic photon flux density and percent transmittance were measured 1 m above the ground at four points in each of three canopy densities created by a spacing experiment in a 35-year-old paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) dominated stand located near Prince George, B.C. At each point, fisheye photographs were taken and LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer (LAI-2000), spherical densiometer, and competition index (Lorimer'sindex) measurements were made. Percent transmittance measurements onan overcast day (1-h average), transmittance measured over periods of 3 h or longer on a clear day, LAI-2000 diffuse noninterceptance measurements, and gap light index determined from fisheye photographs were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance (r2>= 0.96) as was competition index (r2 = 0.928). Concave spherical densiometer measurements and midday percent transmittance measurements on clear days were also well correlated with measured percent transmittance (r2>= 0.89). Estimates of understory light by the LITE model were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance. Correlations improved with increasing length of the period simulated (r2 = 0.755 for a point measurement on a clear day; r2 = 0.936 for an entire sunny day;and, r2 = 0.953 for the entire growing season). Increased emphasis on forest complexity, resilience, and biodiversity has renewed interest in northern hardwood forests. In parallel, there is concern of impacts of traditional, timber-oriented regeneration methods on successional trajectories and tree communities. To ensure compatibility of emerging goals with site biological capacity, assessment of common silvicultural methods across forest conditions is imperative. This work utilizes a long-term dataset of 407 sampling plots from the Bartlett Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA, over 70 years. Topographic and meteorological variables were utilized to test the effects of site conditions and silviculture on tree species diversity and composition. Results show a decline in diversity over time that reflects a shift toward dominance of late successional species, which vary with site-specific conditions. The effect of silviculture was not detectable, and differences in tree communities were attributed to pre-existing conditions of site variables prior to installation of experimental treatments. Tree diversity and composition for both 1932 and 2003 measurements were correlated with solar insolation, local wind speed, and hydrological catchment area. The collective findings highlight the long-term stability of species under past silvicultural regimes, that some areas are more facilitative/limiting to goals of enhancing tree biodiversity and emerging technologies can capture species–site interactions in northern hardwoods. The SRIEG (Southern Regional Information Exchange Group) 1994 program organizers (George Askew, Tom Blush, and Barbara McCutchan) invited18 authors to survey attitudes, data, methodology, plans, regulations, and strategies with respect to genetic diversity in forest stands.These presentations, made during a 2-day meeting on 19--20 July at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, focused particularly on commercial plantations, where a single planted species may serve as the primary keystone species in the ecosystem that develops. We presenthere (1) a brief guide to these 10 presentations, 6 of which are printed in this issue, plus brief descriptions of two companion meetings, one of which is printed in this issue (H.E. Stelzer and B. Goldfarb. 1997. Implementing clonal forestry in the southeastern United States: SRIEG satellite workshop summary remarks. Can. J. For. Res. 27: 442-446); (2) some topics developed during formal panel and audience discussions, and during informal discussions during breaks, that are not fully addressed in the following papers; and (3) some genetic conservation -- diversity issues that seem to need continued or additionalattention. (With respect to items 2 and 3 above, while these were part of our charge, we could not participate in all conversations and discussions that occurred informally, nor do we claim to have fully comprehended those we do report. We did present these at the final session of the meeting, thus giving other participants the opportunity todisagree and add things we missed, and some revisions and additions thus occurred. It was many of these informal conversations and discussions that developed additional insights and made the meeting a more effective format for this topic than just publishing independently submitted papers. This paper reports relationships between wood and fibre traits and investigates the potential for using genetic selection to improve traits that will increase both the yield and the value of the western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) pulpwood resource. Strong family effects were present in the internal wood and fibre properties of relative wood density, average fibre length, and fibre coarseness. Heritability estimates for these traits ranged from 0.5 to 0.9. Heritability estimates for growth variables of height and diameter ranged from 0.15 to 0.2. Beside the moderate to high heritabilities for internal wood variables, coefficients of variation at the individual and family mean level ranged from 7.5 to 13% and from 4 to 6.5%, respectively. Correlations at an individual phenotypic and genetic level showedadverse correlations between growth rate and both relative wood density (negative correlation) and fibre coarseness (positive correlation). A significant negative phenotypic correlation between relative wood density and coarseness would appear to be due to the fact that bothtraits were strongly correlated to growth rate. The partial correlation controlling for diameter between coarseness and diameter was nonsignificant. The article discusses the 2022 North American Forest Ecology Workshop (NAFEW) with the theme "Turning Ecological Answers into Forest Management Actions," highlighting the importance of forest science in sustainable forest management practices and how the research community contributes to evidence-based policies.

The arbitrage was tested for United Kingdom and German newsprint imports from Finland, Sweden, and Canada using the hypothesis of 'the law of one price' (LOP). The LOP states that prices of homogenous commodities, defined in the common currency, are equal throughout the world. Concept of cointegration and Johansen's multivariate method were used in 11T to testing the LOP in the long run. The empirical data were quarterly covering the period 1980--1994. The hypothesis that the LOP holds for all three supplier countries simultaneously was not supported by the multivariate test results in either importing country. Cointegration tests rejected the simultaneous LOP between the three import prices in both markets. Incomplete knowledge of the ecological functions of small streams and their riparian zones, particularly their roles in larger watershed and landscape contexts, contributes to confusion and debate about the levels of riparian vegetation retention required along small streams for the purpose of protecting aquatic ecosystems, riparian wildlife, and water quality. As a consequence, there are marked differences in riparian forestry practices and management among jurisdictions throughout North America. To aid in resolving these issues, a symposium on small streams and their riparian zones was held at The University of British Columbia from 19 to 21 February 2002, which brought together scientists, managers, and practitioners and provided a forum for the presentation and discussion of emerging research results. We respond to the comment by Messier et al. (2011. Can. J. For. Res. 41: 649-653) on our recent paper questioning the possible influence of the base status of soils in the present-day expansion of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) in Quebec (2009. Can. J. For. Res. 39: 2273-2282). From our observations, as well as from a large body of scientific evidence reporting on the high sensitivity of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to the acid-base status of soils, we hypothesized that soil base cation depletion, caused in part by atmospheric deposition, is among the main factors involved in the present-day expansion of American beech over large areas in Quebec. Clearly, we suggested in our paper that acid deposition might act with other factors to explain the expansion of American beech. In this context, our conclusions are far from any oversimplified explanation, as stated by Messier et al., but rather, they point out a level of complexity above the one currently discussed. Rev. can. rech. for. 39: 2273-2282) traitant de l'influence potentielle de la teneur en cations basiques du sol sur l'expansion actuelle du hêtre à grandes feuilles (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) au Québec. Sur la base de nos observations et d'une masse de données scientifiques concernant la grande sensibilité de l'érable à sucre (Acer saccharum Marsh.) à l'équilibre acides-bases dans le sol, nous avons émis l'hypothèse que l'épuisement des cations basiques du sol, causé en partie par les dépôts atmosphériques acides, serait un des principaux facteurs responsables de l'expansion actuelle du hêtre à grandes feuilles sur de vastes superficies au Québec. Nous avons clairement indiqué dans notre article que les dépôts acides pourraient interagir avec d'autres facteurs pour expliquer l'expansion du hêtre à grandes feuilles. Dans ce contexte, nos conclusions sont loin d'être des explications simplistes comme l'affirment Messier et al.; elles font plutôt ressortir un degré de complexité supérieur à celui qui fait présentement l'objet des discussions.
