Much of Canada's terrestrial biodiversity is supported by boreal forests. Natural resource development in boreal forests poses risks to this biodiversity. This paper reviews the scientific literature to assess the effects of natural resource development on terrestrial biodiversity in Canadian boreal forests. We address four questions: (1) To what extent have Canadian boreal forests changed due to natural resource development? (2) How has biodiversity responded to these changes? (3) Will the biodiversity of second-growth forests converge with that of primary boreal forests? (4) Are we losing species from boreal forests? We focus on trees, understory plants, insects, fungi, selected mammals, and songbirds because these groups have been most studied. We review more than 600 studies and found that changes in community composition are prevalent in response to large-scale conversion of forest types, changes in stand structures and age distributions, and altered landscape structure resulting from forest management and habitat loss associated with other developments such as oil and gas, hydroelectric, and mining. The southern boreal forest has been more highly impacted than the north due to more extensive forest management and the cumulative effects of multiple forms of development. There is abundant evidence that most species are not in danger of being extirpated from the boreal forest due to these anthropogenic changes. A few species, including woodland caribou ( Rangifer tarandus) and grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos), have, however, undergone long-term range contractions. Significant gaps in our ability to assess the effects of natural resource development on biodiversity in the boreal zone are the lack of long-term spatial and population data to monitor the impact of forest changes on ecosystems and species. Effective tools must be developed that include consideration of biodiversity in the traditional forest planning process. The objective of this study is to present a spatial habitat suitability model that could be included in the optimization of long-term forest planning where the problem can be solved with an exact solution method. This could be an advantage, since, e.g., many forest planning systems available today are designed for problems that could be solved with an exact solution method. The habitat model consists of two parts: suitability assessment of stand-wise conditions and spatial conditions. To investigate whether the model works in a realistic setting, we used a case study and applied the model to the habitat demands for Hazel Grouse (Bonasa bonasia L.). The results from the case study indicate that the model is effective for including spatial habitat consideration and that the model could be used for creating different degrees of the clustering of habitats. Further, the loss in net present value as a result of the spatial habitat demands was limited in the case study. We suggest that this modeling approach could be extended to other species with large area requirements and add to the existing tools for forest biodiversity assessment in forest management planning. Cet article vise à présenter un modèle spatialisé de la qualité d'habitat qui pourrait être incorporé à la planification forestière à long terme où le problème pourrait être résolu avec une méthode de solution exacte. Cela peut être avantageux puisque plusieurs systèmes courants de planification forestière sont conçus pour être résolus avec une solution exacte. Le modèle d'habitat comporte deux composantes correspondant à une évaluation de la qualité du peuplement et une évaluation du contexte spatial. Pour déterminer si le modèle fonctionne dans des conditions réalistes, nous avons appliqué le modèle aux exigences d'habitat de la gélinotte des bois (Bonasa bonasia L.) dans une étude de cas. Les résultats indiquent que le modèle prend bien en compte les composantes spatiales de l'habitat et qu'il peut être utilisé pour créer différents degrés d'amalgamation des habitats. De plus, la perte de valeur actualisée nette liée aux demandes spatiales d'habitat était limitée dans l'étude de cas. Nous suggérons que cette approche de modélisation soit élargie à d'autres espèces exigeant de grandes superficies d'habitat et incorporée aux outils existants d'évaluation de la biodiversité forestière dans la planification de l'aménagement forestier.
