The Coldbrook Group and related plutons in the Caledonian Highlands of southern New Brunswick contain voluminous late Ediacaran silicic rocks formed in a magmatic event not recognized in other parts of Avalonia in the northern Appalachian orogen. To better constrain the age and origin of these rocks, we used U–Pb zircon dating by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to check for older inherited zircon and obtain trace element data, followed by chemical abrasion isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) to obtain precise dates. Four silicic samples were dated from the Coldbrook Group, one from the Bonnell Brook pluton, and, for comparison, a felsic lithic-crystal tuff sample from the older arc-related Broad River Group. Overlapping CA-TIMS dates of 551.57 ± 0.23, 551.38 ± 0.24, and 551.70 ± 0.20 Ma for samples from the lower, middle, and upper Coldbrook Group, respectively, and 551.71 ± 0.19 Ma for granite from the Bonnell Brook pluton show that these units crystallized in 760000 years or less, consistent with a super-eruption event. Rhyolite from the uppermost unit of the Coldbrook Group yielded a younger date of 549.18 ± 0.09 Ma, but the large extent of that unit is consistent with the possibility of a second younger super-eruption. The felsic lithic-crystal tuff sample from the Broad River Group yielded a date of 615.48 ± 0.16 Ma, consistent with previously published dates from that group and associated plutons. Differences in zircon chemistry between the Broad River Group sample and the late Ediacaran samples are consistent with the contrasting subduction-related vs within-plate extensional tectonic settings as suggested by previous studies of whole-rock petrological characteristics of the two age groups. The Morin terrane is an allochthonous crustal block in the southwestern Grenville Province with a relatively poorly constrained metamorphic history. In this part of the Grenville Province, some terranes were part of the ductile middle crust during the 1.09–1.02 Ga collision of Laurentia with the Amazon craton (the Ottawan phase of the Grenvillian orogeny), while other terranes were part of the orogen's superstructure. New U–Pb geochronology suggests that the Morin terrane experienced granulite-facies metamorphism during the accretionary Shawinigan orogeny (1.19–1.14 Ga) and again during the Ottawan. Seven zircon samples from the 1.15 Ga Morin anorthosite suite were dated to confirm earlier age determinations, and Ottawan metamorphic rims (1.08–1.07 Ga) were observed in two samples. U–Pb dating of titanite in nine marble samples surrounding the Morin anorthosite suite yielded mixed ages spanning between the Shawinigan and Ottawan metamorphisms (n = 7), and predominantly Ottawan ages (n = 2). Our results show that Ottawan zircon growth and resetting of titanite ages is spatially heterogeneous in the Morin terrane. Ages with a predominantly Ottawan signature are recognized in the Morin shear zone, which deforms the eastern lobe of the anorthosite, in an overprinted skarn zone on the western side of the massif, and in the Labelle shear zone that marks its western boundary. In the rest of the Morin terrane, titanite with Shawinigan ages appear to have been only partially reset during the Ottawan. The Silurian Croagh Patrick succession, which crops out just south of a fundamental Caledonian structural zone near Clew Bay, western Ireland, is a series of psammites and pelites with a strong penetrative cleavage. These rocks are intruded by the Corvock granite. A suite of minor intrusions associated with the granite contains the regional cleavage whereas the Corvock granite is undeformed. New U–Pb dates are 413 +7 / –4 Ma for a strongly cleaved sill and 410 ± 4 Ma for the main granite, and closely constrain the age of crystallization of the granite and coeval cleavage formation as Lower Devonian (Lochkovian or Pragian), implying syn- to late-kinematic granite emplacement. These data are consistent with evidence for strong sinistral shear shown by the Ox Mountains granodiorite just to the northeast dated at 412.3 ± 0.8 Ma. This Devonian cleavage is superimposed on Ordovician rocks of the South Mayo Trough. The localisation of the strong deformation is interpreted as being due to its position at a restraining bend during regional sinistral motion on a segment of the Fair Head – Clew Bay Line to the north. Contemporaneous deformation in the syn-kinematic Donegal batholith suggests a transfer of sinistral motion to this intra-Grampian structure rather than simple along-strike linkage to the Highland Boundary Fault in Scotland. Our new data indicate diachronous deformation during the late Silurian and early Devonian history of the Irish and Scottish Caledonides and also support previous interpretations of diachronous deformation between these areas and the Appalachian orogens. Paleoproterozoic gneisses of the Ellesmere–Devon crystalline terrane on southeastern Ellesmere Island are deformed by metre-scale, east-striking mylonite zones. The shear zones commonly offset pegmatitic dikes and represent the last episode of ductile deformation. Samples were dated by the 40Ar/39Ar step-heating method to put an upper limit on the time of deformation. Biotite from one tonalitic protolith and five shear zones give geologically meaningful results. Clusters of unoriented biotite grains pseudomorph granulite-facies orthopyroxene in some of the weakly deformed gneisses, whereas the shape-preferred orientation of biotite defines the mylonitic fabric. The intrusive age of the tonalitic protolith is 1958 ± 12 Ma, based on previous U–Pb dating of zircon. 40Ar/39Ar analysis of biotite from the same sample gave a plateau age of 1929 ± 23 Ma, which is interpreted as cooling from regional granulite facies metamorphism. Three nearby samples of mylonitic tonalite have 40Ar/39Ar ages in the range of ≈1870–1840 Ma. Biotite from two granitic mylonites over 80 km away return high-resolution Ar spectra in the same range, implying that widespread ductile shearing occurred at ≈1870–1840 Ma, or ≈90 million years after cooling from regional metamorphism. Although the 2.0–1.9 Ga gneisses of southeastern Ellesmere Island correlate with the Inglefield Mobile Belt in North-West Greenland and the Thelon Tectonic Zone, the late shear zones are superimposed on that juvenile arc long after the 1.97 Ga Thelon orogeny. Unravelling the petrogenesis and stratigraphy of Archean mafic lava flows is essential to our comprehension of the early geodynamic evolution and economic potential of greenstone belts. This study focuses on one of the oldest and thickest sequences of lava flows observed in the Neoarchean Abitibi Subprovince (greenstone belt), that is, the Obatogamau Formation. The undated formation extends for more than 100 km in an E–W direction and consists mostly of aphyric and feldspar megacryst-bearing basaltic-andesite lava flows. These lava flows are tholeiitic, mostly Fe-rich, and have nearly homogeneous chemistry. Petrogenetic modelling carried out using MELTS software points to limited magmatic differentiation as most samples of mafic lava flows did not reach Fe-Ti-oxide saturation. Zircon U-Pb dating establishes a crystallization age of 2726.2 ± 1.6 Ma for a felsic unit located at an intermediate stratigraphic position in the sequence of lava flows. Constraints from stratigraphically overlying volcanic units suggest that the Obatogamau Formation was likely emplaced rapidly, possibly within a few million years and as a consequence of frequent replenishment of shallow magma accumulations. High eruption rates are consistent with short episodes of volcanic quiescence deduced from field observations, indicating non-optimal conditions for volcanogenic massive sulfide systems. The pressure and temperature of peak metamorphism deduced from amphibole chemistry, however, points to favorable conditions for the release of metamorphic fluids. The study area may thus be prospective for orogenic gold mineralization, provided that fluids had access to a source of gold and that structural conduits allowed for the channeling of hydrothermal fluids. Geodynamic evolution in the late Paleozoic is significant for understanding the final amalgamation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). No consensus has yet been reached regarding the late Paleozoic geodynamic evolution of the northern Great Xing'an Range (GXR) in northeastern China, the eastern CAOB. Furthermore, late Paleozoic syenogranite–diabase dyke association is present in the Xiaokele area in northern GXR. It provides an important opportunity to understand the nature of magmatism and the geodynamic evolution during this period. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb ages, zircon Hf isotopic compositions, and geochemical data of whole rocks for Xiaokele syenogranite and diabase. Zircon U–Pb dating suggests that the Xiaokele syenogranite (292.5 ± 0.9 Ma) and diabase (298.3 ± 1.5 Ma) were emplaced during the early Permian. The Xiaokele syenogranites have high SiO2 contents, low MgO contents, and enriched zircon εHf(t) values, suggesting that their primary magma was generated by the partial melting of the juvenile crustal material. The Xiaokele diabases have low SiO2 contents, high MgO contents, are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements, depleted in high-field-strength elements, and exhibit enriched zircon εHf(t) values. They derived from a lithospheric mantle source that had previously been metasomatized by slab-derived fluids. Combined with previous research results, we believe that the continent–continent collision between the Xing'an and Songliao blocks occurred during the late early Carboniferous – early late Carboniferous (330–310 Ma), and the two blocks were transformed into a post-collisional extensional setting during the latest Carboniferous – early Permian. The Xiaorequanzi Cu–Zn deposit is in the westernmost part of East Tianshan Terrane in northwestern China. The deposit is unique in the region being a volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposit located near a zone (or belt) containing giant late Paleozoic porphyry Cu deposits. Aiming to better understand the genesis of the mineral deposits in the terrane and their tectonic setting, we report our findings of detailed studies on fluid inclusion microthermometry, Re–Os dating of chalcopyrite from the massive ore, and U–Pb dating of zircons from the host volcanic rocks. There are two sulphide stages with early pyrite succeeded by chalcopyrite–sphalerite, which are hydrothermally overprinted and supergene enriched. The hydrothermal overprinting is characterised by quartz–sulphide veins crossed by carbonate-rich quartz veins. Quartz from the chalcopyrite–sphalerite stage is characterised by primary fluid inclusions containing H2O–NaCl(–CO2) and homogenise at 228–392 °C with a salinity of 2.2–13.3 wt.% NaCl equiv. Secondary fluid inclusions related to the hydrothermal overprinting homogenise at 170–205 °C with a salinity of 2.7–12.1 wt.% NaCl equiv. Fluid inclusions in the quartz–sulphide stage of the hydrothermal overprinting contain H2O–NaCl with homogenisation temperatures of 164–281 °C and salinities in ranging from 2.9 to 12.4 wt.% NaCl equiv. Fluid inclusion in the quartz–calcite stage contain H2O–NaCl with homogenisation temperatures of 122–204 °C with salinities of 1.4–12.4 wt.% NaCl equiv. These characteristics are like those of the secondary fluid inclusions in the VMS mineralisation. Combining these findings with H–O isotopic data from previous studies, we propose that the primary mineralising fluid is magmatic in origin. Tuff hosting the mineralisation yields a SHRIMP U–Pb zircon age of 352 ± 5 Ma, which is interpreted as the age of the tuff, and a porphyritic felsite dyke intruding the tuff yields a SHRIMP U–Pb zircon date of 345 ± 6 Ma, interpreted as the emplacement age of the dyke. Chalcopyrite from the main orebody at Xiaorequanzi yields a Re–Os isochron age of 336 ± 13 Ma with an initial 187Os/188Os ratio of 0.25 ± 0.55 (MSWD = 12). Given that the VMS deposit is a syngenetic deposit, we regard the upper ca. 349 Ma limit of the Re–Os date as the approximate age of the chalcopyrite. The three dates are the same within error, and the upper limit of the Re–Os date of ca. 349 is taken as the age of the volcanic, dyke, and mineralisation. The volcanic rocks around the Xiaorequanzi deposit have been previously classified as calc–alkaline to high-K calc–alkaline enriched in large-ion lithophile elements and depleted in high-field-strength elements, which are characteristics indicative of a forearc setting. Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary successions of the northwestern Canadian Shield provide records of tectonic events, but the definition of depositional ages has proved elusive. Although previously poorly understood, the Montresor belt of western Nunavut yields new insight into the 2.2-1.8 Ga time window. On the basis of U-Pb analyses of detrital zircon in sedimentary rocks and igneous zircon in sills, we conclude that arenite of the lower Montresor group was deposited between 2.194 and 2.045 Ga, and arkose of the upper Montresor group after 1.924 Ga, adding constraints on the Rae cover sequence. The lower Montresor arenite yielded an older group (3.05-2.58 Ga) and a younger, more tightly constrained group (2.194 ± 0.014 Ga). Four of six zircon grains analyzed from a gabbro sill within the lower Montresor have discordant 207Pb/206Pb ages (2.71, 2.66, 2.53, and 2.39 Ga) and are considered to be inherited, whereas two grains provide an age of 2045 ± 13 Ma, interpreted to date crystallization and providing a minimum age for the lower Montresor package. Upper Montresor arkose contains detrital zircon with probability density peaks at 2.55-2.25 and 2.1-1.92 Ga, together with scattered older grains (3.8-2.65 Ga). The youngest grain yields an age of 1924 ± 6 Ma, establishing a maximum age for sandstone deposition. Provenance is inferred to have been from the west, where igneous sources of 2.5-2.3 Ga (Queen Maud block) and 2.03-1.89 Ga (Thelon orogen) are known. Collectively, the new ages suggest a minimum 120 million year gap between deposition of the pre-2045 ± 13 Ma lower and post-1924 ± 6 Ma upper parts of the Montresor group. The Taku terrane consists of metamorphosed Carboniferous through Triassic marine clastic strata, volcanic rocks, and limestone that occur along the western margin of the Coast Mountains in southeastern Alaska. These rocks are juxtaposed along mid-Cretaceous thrust faults over Jura-Cretaceous basinal strata of the Gravina belt to the west and beneath Proterozoic through Carboniferous metamorphic rocks of the Yukon-Tanana terrane to the east. This paper presents U-Pb ages and Hf isotope analyses of detrital zircons from the Taku terrane, and compares these values with information from the adjacent Wrangellia, Alexander, and northern and southern portions of the Yukon-Tanana terrane (YTTn and YTTs). These comparisons suggest that ( i) Carboniferous strata of the Taku terrane were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, ( ii) Permian strata of the Taku terrane were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks and intraformational Lower Permian volcanic rocks of YTTs as well as Upper Permian volcanic rocks exposed in YTTn, and ( iii) Triassic sandstones were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, whereas conglomerates were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic arc rocks in YTTn. Hf isotope analyses of Paleozoic zircons record increasing continental input during Silurian-Devonian and Permian phases of magmatism. Similarities in isotopic characteristics, combined with stratigraphic and geochemical information presented by previous workers, suggest that strata of the Taku terrane accumulated on (and partly as lateral equivalents of) rocks of YTTs, and that the combined assemblages formed outboard or along strike of YTTn. We report the results of new mapping, whole-rock major, minor, and trace-element geochemistry, and petrography for metaigneous rocks from the Mount Veta area in the westernmost part of the allochthonous Yukon-Tanana terrane (YTT) in east-central Alaska. These rocks include tonalitic mylonite gneiss and mafic metaigneous rocks from the Chicken metamorphic complex and the Nasina and Fortymile River assemblages. Whole-rock trace-element data from the tonalitic gneiss, whose igneous protolith was dated by SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology at 332.6 ± 5.6 Ma, indicate derivation from tholeiitic arc basalt. Whole-rock analyses of the mafic rocks suggest that greenschist-facies rocks from the Chicken metamorphic complex, a mafic metavolcanic rock from the Nasina assemblage, and an amphibolite from the Fortymile River assemblage formed as island-arc tholeiite in a back-arc setting; another Nasina assemblage greenschist has MORB geochemical characteristics, and another mafic metaigneous rock from the Fortymile River assemblage has geochemical characteristics of calc-alkaline basalt. Our geochemical results imply derivation in an arc and back-arc spreading region within the allochthonous YTT crustal fragment, as previously proposed for correlative units in other parts of the terrane. We also describe the petrography and geochemistry of a newly discovered tectonic lens of Alpine-type metaharzburgite. The metaharzburgite is interpreted to be a sliver of lithospheric mantle from beneath the Seventymile ocean basin or from sub-continental mantle lithosphere of the allochthonous YTT or the western margin of Laurentia that was tectonically emplaced within crustal rocks during closure of the Seventymile ocean basin and subsequently displaced and fragmented by faults. Integrated electron nanobeam (EBSD, CL, EDS) and isotopic measurements (U-Pb, (U-Th)/He) of zircon from the collar and centre of the 80 km wide central uplift of the 2020 ±3 Ma Vredefort impact structure reveal new shock features in a microstructural progression related to impact basin formation and degree of U-Pb age resetting: (1) planar fractures in {1K0} and {1K2} orientation during initial shock wave compression; (2) curviplanar fractures in {1K1} orientation, now annealed, which host glassy inclusions of partial melt of the host rock; (3) microtwin lamellae in an orientation of 65° about [110], attributed to shock wave rarefaction; (4) nucleation of impact-age crystallites, possibly on microtwins, during post-shock heating by impact melt; and (5) crystal-plastic deformation linked to crater modification of the core of the central uplift. Planar fracturing and microtwinning ≥20 GPa in 'cold shock' zircon in granitoid at a radial distance of 25 km failed to reset zircon age. Single-grain ID-TIMS data extend between pre-impact age of 2077 ±11 Ma and a secondary Pb-loss event at ca. 1.0 Ga - the latter reflecting Kibaran igneous activity between 1.110 and 1.021 Ga. Age resetting by the impact event operated in an ~15 km wide 'hot shock' zone of impact-elevated temperatures ≥700 °C at the core of the central uplift. Mechanisms include internal recrystallization, defect-accelerated Pb diffusion via shock microstructures and melt films, and late crystal-plastic deformation. Igneous zircons from a 2019 ±2 Ma foliated norite impact melt yield a mean (U-Th)/He date of 923 ±61 Ma, indicating exposure of the present surface after this time. Zircon grains in rocks collected from the Itsaq Gneiss Complex, southwest Greenland, were analyzed for U-Pb and Lu-Hf in the same grain using isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and multicollector - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Grains were pretreated using chemical abrasion or air abrasion to assure that only zircon material unaffected by the migration of parent and daughter elements was analyzed. The data are consistent with derivation of all studied rocks from a single enriched mantle source or mafic crustal protolith with 176Lu/177Hf of 0.022 ±0.003 that was repeatedly melted and produced tonalitic magmas. The assessment of the primary mantle source from which this mafic protolith was derived, at or before 3.85 Ga, greatly depends on the assumed composition of the bulk silicate Earth. Using the currently accepted Lu-Hf bulk Earth parameters based on the analysis of chondrites yields εHf(T) of 0 to +1 for the 3.80-3.86 Ga rocks, suggesting that the protolith was derived from mantle that underwent moderate depletion shortly before 3.9 Ga. However, using alternative models of the bulk silicate Earth composition, i.e., that account for the possible irradiation-induced accelerated decay of 176Lu in the early Solar System, and (or) loss of the products of early planetesimal or planetary differentiation, can lead to widely variable interpretations of the enrichment or depletion history of the mantle source of the Itsaq protolith. Des grains de zircon dans des roches prélevées du complexe gneissique Itsaq, dans le sud-ouest du Groenland, ont été analysés pour U-Pb et Lu-Hf dans un même grain au moyen de la dilution isotopique dans un spectromètre de masse à ionisation thermique (TIMS) et par spectrométrie de masse à plasma inductif après ablation au laser (MC-ICP-MS). Les grains ont été prétraités par abrasion chimique ou par abrasion à l'air afin de s'assurer que seul le matériel du zircon non affecté par la migration d'éléments parents ou de filiation est analysé. Les données concordent avec la provenance de toutes les roches étudiées d'une source unique enrichie du manteau ou d'un protolithe mafique de la croûte, avec un rapport 176Lu/177Hf de 0 022 ±0 003, qui a été mis en fusion de manière répétée et qui a produit des magmas tonalitiques. There have been a number of reports of the presence of shock features, such as planar fracturing and granulation, the transformation of zircon to reidite, and the breakdown of zircon to baddeleyite in zircons associated with terrestrial impacts. It has also been proposed that the progressive development of these shock features, and the degree of disturbance of the zircon U-Pb isotopic system, could be used as a qualitative measure of the shock pressures and post-shock temperatures of the impact. Such behaviour of zircon from terrestrial impacts could be potentially useful in interpreting structures and U-Pb isotopic behaviour of shocked zircons from lunar impactites. However, careful examination of over one hundred zircon grains from samples of lunar breccias from Apollo 14 and 17 have not revealed any grains with terrestrial-like shock features, such as planar deformation features (PDFs), and we have not observed the high-pressure zircon phases reidite or the breakdown of zircon to baddeleyite in zircon grains from the breccias. Most lunar zircon grains show no evidence of a disturbance of their U-Pb systems. However, we have identified a few zircons from lunar breccias that have characteristic internal structures and accompanying Pb loss that we attribute to extreme shock. These structures differ from shock features reported for zircons associated with terrestrial impacts. Whether terrestrial-like impact features were present in the lunar zircons and have been removed during transport and heating in the impact ejecta, or whether these features never developed in the first place, has not been resolved. The Butedale pluton, a ca. 100 km long compositionally zoned batholith, is part of the Coast Plutonic Complex that extends the length of the Canadian Pacific coast. Its age and thermal history are relevant to the Butedale pluton's role as a test case of the Baja-BC hypothesis, as paleomagnetic evidence suggests that it may have formed thousands of kilometres to the south and moved northward along what is now the Coast Shear Zone. High-resolution U-Pb (chemical abrasion - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS), zircon) analysis of rocks across the width of the Butedale pluton indicates that it is actually made up of at least two distinct magmatic events that formed the West Butedale pluton (ca. 95 Ma) and the East Butedale pluton (ca. 85 Ma). The East Butedale pluton was reheated by the emplacement of a younger adjacent pluton, which may have caused partial Pb loss and resulting excess scatter of 206Pb/238U zircon ages within individual samples. The West Butedale pluton may be the same age as, and part of, the nearby Ecstall pluton, thereby doubling the length of the Ecstall pluton to ca. 200 km. Single-grain, high-precision U-Pb analysis of zircon reveals previously unknown complexity and detail of emplacement and thermal history in the Butedale plutons. High-precision isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb zircon and baddeleyite ages from the PX1 vertically layered mafic intrusion Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, indicate initiation of magma crystallization at 22.10 ±0.07 Ma. The magmatic activity lasted a minimum of 0.52 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar amphibole dating yielded ages from 21.9 ±0.6 to 21.8 ±0.3, identical within errors to the U-Pb ages, despite the expected 1% theoretical bias between 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dates. This overlap could result from (i) rapid cooling of the intrusion (i.e., less than the 0.3 to 0.6 Ma 40Ar/39Ar age uncertainties) from closure temperatures (Tc) of zircon (699-988 °C) to amphibole (500-600 °C); (ii) lead loss affecting the youngest zircons; or (iii) excess argon shifting the plateau ages towards older values. The combination of the 40Ar/39Ar and U/Pb datasets implies that the maximum amount of time PX1 intrusion took to cool below amphibole Tc is 0.8 Ma, suggesting PX1 lifetime of 520 000 to 800 000 Ma. Age disparities among coexisting baddeleyite and zircon (22.10 ±0.07/0.08/0.15 Ma and 21.58 ±0.15/0.16/0.31 Ma) in a gabbro sample from the pluton margin suggest complex genetic relationships between phases. Baddeleyite is found preserved in plagioclase cores and crystallized early from low silica activity magma. Zircon crystallized later in a higher silica activity environment and is found in secondary scapolite and is found close to calcite veins, in secondary scapolite that recrystallised from plagioclase. close to calcite veins. Oxygen isotope δ18O values of altered plagioclase are high (+7.7), indicating interaction with fluids derived from host-rock carbonatites. The coexistence of baddeleyite and zircon is ascribed to interaction of the PX1 gabbro with CO2-rich carbonatite-derived fluids released during contact metamorphism. Tom Krogh was without a doubt the most influential U-Pb geochronologist of the modern era. His career was marked by a continuing series of breakthroughs, both revolutionary and evolutionary. His legacy is such that every lab around the world uses the methods he developed. After some fascinating insights into chemical leaching effects in zircon, Tom largely dropped this approach in favor of his enormously successful air abrasion technique, coupled with careful sample selection at the individual grain level. Here, I describe continued experiments with leaching and 'step-wise dissolution' techniques, and how a series of alternating steps forward and setbacks eventually led to a new 'chemical abrasion' or 'CA-TIMS' method for selectively removing those domains within zircon that have lost Pb. Continuing to strive for improvements in analytical technique is perhaps the best way to honor Tom's many contributions and extend his legacy. The stratigraphy of Cretaceous rocks in the Western Canada Foreland Basin is well constrained by dense borehole data that allow three-dimensional mapping of transgressive-regressive events, paleogeography, and subsidence patterns. However, it is difficult to estimate rates of change or to place events in a precise temporal framework because very few of the many bentonite beds have been dated using modern techniques. In this study, two bentonites, of at least regional extent, were dated using isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb methods on chemically abraded zircon crystals. The older bentonite correlates with the 'X' bentonite of the late middle Cenomanian and yields an age of 95.87 ±0.10 Ma. The Bighorn River Bentonite, which lies just below the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary, yields an age of 94.29 ±0.13 Ma and is interpreted to equate with the 'B' bentonite and bed 80 at Pueblo, Colorado. Both bentonites dated here are older than the previously reported 40Ar/39Ar ages from correlative United States samples, supporting the observation that 40Ar/39Ar ages may systematically underestimate ages of Cretaceous bentonites by ~1%, as suggested by other recent studies. The X bentonite immediately precedes a major late middle Cenomanian eustatic transgression that inundated the Dunvegan delta complex. The new ages for the X and Bighorn River bentonites indicate an average minimum subsidence rate of ~0.27 mm/year in the most proximal part of the Cenomanian foredeep in northeast British Columbia during this time. The new age of the Bighorn River Bentonite, coupled with the orbitally tuned time scale of Sageman et al. (2006), suggests a Cenomanian-Turonian boundary age of 94.12 ±0.13 Ma. The Liverpool Land - Canning Land region in East Greenland is the central-most basement high in the northeast Atlantic Caledonides. It contains a variety of rocks derived from the whole section of the Caledonian crust, permitting correlations and comparisons of tectonomagmatic events at all crustal levels. Here, we present U-Pb thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) data combined with field studies suggesting that the region can be divided into distinct tectonostratigraphic domains: (1) The Southern Liverpool Land eclogite terrane with garnet-peridotite and eclogite lenses, the product of a polyorogenic history with a latest-Paleoproterozic and Mesoproterozoic origin, eclogitization at 398 Ma and migmatization at 387 Ma. (2) The migmatitic Mariager Fjord Dome in central Liverpool Land with gneisses that formed leucosome at 409 Ma. Both areas are separated by high-strain zones from (3) the overlying Hurry Inlet plutonic terrane, which consists of metasedimentary rocks first intruded by granodiorite to granite at ca. 440-430 Ma, and, after local deformation, by a major 426-424 Ma granitic to monzonitic suite. (4) Structurally higher, and probably above another high-strain zone, low-grade Neoproterozoic to Cambrian sediments are intruded, by syn-contractional 427 Ma leucogranite. All these units are unconformably overlain by Devonian and younger deposits. Collectively our data document a distinct variation in time for Caledonian magmatism and metamorphism in the various tectonostratigraphic domains, implying that the diverse terranes were juxtaposed after magmatism, and that the gneiss domes of Liverpool Land have a different origin than other nappes of the East Greenland Caledonides. High-precision U-Pb isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) geochronology on chemically abraded zircon grains from a noritic gabbro of the Ni-bearing Suwar mafic-ultramafic layered complex, northwestern Yemen, gives a mean 206Pb/238U age of 638.46 ±0.73 Ma (2σ; MSWD = 1.4). At Wadi Qutabah, ~30 km to the north, a similar mafic sample has an identical age of 638.58 0.51 Ma (2σ; MSWD = 0.32), which supports the possibility of there being a single, large intrusive complex with an estimated areal extent of ~250 km2. This is supported by geochemical data of samples from each locality, which are postkinematic, gabbroic rocks that contain variable amounts of cumulus olivine, plagioclase, orthopyroxene, and ilmenite with intercumulus augite, hornblende, and Ni-sulphides. Straight rare Earth element (REE) patterns, Ba/La ~30, Rb/Ba ~0.04, and negative primitive-mantle-normalized P anomalies resemble EM1 (Enriched Mantle 1) of oceanic island basalts and Archean subcontinental mantle lithosphere. The mineralogy and magmatic/tectonic discrimination diagrams suggest within-plate continental tholeiitic and noritic cumulates typical of a rift setting for both intrusions. The complex intrudes retrograded, amphibolite-facies paragneiss of the Pan-African Afif lithotectonic terrane, and is generally undeformed and unaltered, and, therefore, unaffected by the Pan-African orogeny. Emplacement of the 639 Ma complex occurred during a tensional tectonic regime on the Arabian Peninsula and marks the time of proto-Iapetan rifting. The estimated size of the intrusion, its noritic composition, and Archean subcontinental lithospheric mantle signature and its position in thin Proterozoic lithosphere abutting Archean cratonic rocks, give it the key characteristics of known, mostly Proterozoic, intrusions that host world-class Ni-Cu-Co ore deposits. U-Pb ages have been determined on detrital zircons from the Upper Devonian Imperial Formation and Upper Devonian - Lower Carboniferous Tuttle Formation of the northern Canadian Cordilleran miogeocline using laser ablation - multicollector - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry. The results provide insights into mid-Paleozoic sediment dispersal in, and paleogeography of, the northern Canadian Cordillera. The Imperial Formation yielded a wide range of detrital zircon dates; one sample yielded dominant peaks at 1130, 1660, and 1860 Ma, with smaller mid-Paleozoic (~430 Ma), Neoproterozoic, and Archean populations. The easternmost Imperial Formation sample yielded predominantly late Neoproterozoic - Cambrian zircons between 500 and 700 Ma, with lesser Mesoproterozoic and older populations. The age spectra suggest that the samples were largely derived from an extensive region of northwestern Laurentia, including the Canadian Shield, igneous and sedimentary provinces of Canada's Arctic Islands, and possibly the northern Yukon. The presence of late Neoproterozoic - Cambrian zircon, absent from the Laurentian magmatic record, indicate that a number of grains were likely derived from an exotic source region, possibly including Baltica, Siberia, or Arctic Alaska - Chukotka. In contrast, zircon grains from the Tuttle Formation show a well-defined middle Paleoproterozoic population with dominant relative probability peaks between 1850 and 1950 Ma. Additional populations in the Tuttle Formation are mid-Paleozoic (~430 Ma), Mesoproterozoic (1000-1600 Ma), and earlier Paleoproterozoic and Archean ages (>2000 Ma). These data lend support to the hypothesis that the influx of sediments of northerly derivation that supplied the northern miogeocline in Late Devonian time underwent an abrupt shift to a source of predominantly Laurentian affinity by the Mississippian. Des âges U-Pb ont été déterminés par spectrométrie de masse à plasma inductif avec multicollecteur après ablation au laser sur des zircons détritiques provenant de la Formation Imperial (Dévonien supérieur) et de la Formation Tuttle (Dévonien - Carbonifère inférieur) du miogéoclinal de la Cordillère canadienne septentrionale. Combined mapping, U-Pb isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) geochronology and geochemical studies in Harvey-Cardiff domain in the western Composite Arc Belt reveal the presence of a long-lived magmatic-metamorphic history between 1290 and 1030 Ma. Following intrusion of gneissic tonalite of the Anstruther and Burleigh gneiss complexes at ca. 1290 Ma, diorite of the Salmon Burn intrusive complex was emplaced at 1242.1 ±1.1 Ma. A potassium-feldspar megacrystic monzogranite in the Salerno Creek deformation zone that forms the boundary between Harvey-Cardiff domain and Bancroft terrane was emplaced at 1211.3 ±1.5 Ma, similar to the 1220 ±1.6 Ma old Junction pluton and a previously reported age of ca. 1229 Ma from another Methuen suite granite in the domain. All three ages are 20 to 30 million years younger than Methuen suite ages elsewhere in the Composite Arc Belt (1250-1240 Ma). Deformation along the Salerno Creek deformation zone is constrained between 1211 Ma, the age of the megacrystic monzogranite, and 1050 Ma, the age of titanite grains from the Salmon Burn intrusive complex and a late alkalic dike. A monzogranite of the newly recognized Catchacoma granite suite yielded an age of 1067 ±3.7 Ma, similar to the 1059.2 ±1.6 Ma age obtained from the Cavendish pegmatite vein. These ages suggest a temporal link between late granite and pegmatite emplacement in Harvey-Cardiff domain. Metamorphic zircon, monazite, and titanite ages fall into three clusters (1082-1070, 1063-1045, and 1037-1030 Ma) and may represent a protracted metamorphic event or reflect distinct pulses during the Ottawan orogeny. The Boothia mainland region of the north-central Rae domain is underlain by remnants of a Neoarchean volcano sedimentary sequence dismembered by two regionally extensive Neoarchean high-potassium granitoid suites with rare occurrences of a structurally interleaved, Paleoproterozoic sedimentary cover sequence. The granitoids and their gneissic equivalents are dominated by variably deformed and metamorphosed I-type, metaluminous, polyphase, commonly porphyritic to augen, biotite ±hornblende monzogranite, and subordinate granodiorite, with rare tonalite. New geochronological results, the first for this area, demonstrate that the widespread Neoarchean granitoid plutonism is dominantly 2.61-2.59 Ga, with a less prominent 2.66 Ga plutonic event. The age of zircon recrystallization suggests that ca. 2.60 Ga Archean metamorphism and fabric development (S1) affected the 2.66 Ga plutons prior to or contemporaneously with intrusion of the voluminous ca. 2.6 Ga suite. εNd(t) for the ca. 2.61-2.59 Ga suite range from 1.4 to -1.9, overlapping with the ca. 2.66 Ga suite that range from 1.4 to 1.5. The Nd isotopic data, coupled with the presence of inherited ca. 2.65, 2.70, and 2.85-2.90 Ga zircon, suggests recycling of older, Neoarchean to Mesoarchean crust in the formation of these suites. Metaplutonic rocks preserve Paleoproterozoic deformation (F4 and F5) and amphibolite-facies metamorphism, sporadically recorded in zircon rims that formed at 1.81 Ga. This event strongly reoriented the Neoarchean fabrics in metaplutonic rocks, generally without the development of a new coaxial Paleoproterozoic fabric, and we attribute this strain and metamorphism to the Hudsonian orogeny. De nouveaux résultats géochronologiques, les premiers pour ce secteur, démontrent que le plutonisme granitoïde néoarchéen étendu date surtout de 2,61 à 2,59 Ga, avec un événement plutonique moins important vers 2,66 Ga. Reconstructing tectonic histories involving continental collision, subduction, and exhumation at plate-tectonic rates of ~1 cm/year, requires precise U-Pb zircon geochronology. The Western Gneiss Region has exceptional exposures of high-pressure (HP) and ultra-high-pressure (UHP) rocks. The strategy adopted here involved sampling eclogite and associated late unstrained pegmatites to acquire the time of eclogite crystallization and subsequent exhumation, respectively. The oldest eclogite sampled is 415 ±1 Ma from layered, probably UHP eclogite at Tevik, Averøya, also with a garnet-hornblende assemblage at 410 ±1 Ma. The Flem Gabbro eclogite margin, with implied UHP conditions, is 410 ±2 Ma. Hornblende eclogite at Seth, Lepsøya, never at UHP, is 412 ±2 Ma. These compare to Devonian ages of 401 ±1 Ma for overgrowths on Proterozoic baddeleyite in Selnes Gabbro, 402 ±2 Ma for coesite eclogite at Hareidlandet, 405-400 Ma for coesite eclogite at Flatraket, and 405 ±2 Ma for near-UHP eclogite at Hjelmelandsdalen. The 415 Ma eclogite at Tevik compares to granitic pegmatite in the same outcrop at 395.2 ±1.3 Ma and to pegmatite in eclogite at Aspøya at 395.3 ±2 Ma. The 410 Ma age at Flem compares to nearby pegmatite in eclogite at 396 ±4 Ma. Collectively, these results imply 14-20 million years between deep eclogite crystallization at ~130 km and return to amphibolite-facies conditions at ~30 km, with crystallization of locally derived granitoid melts. Nearby garnet-pyroxenite records older ages (~430) and greater depths (~200 km), but on similar exhumation paths at ~0.4-0.7 cm/year. The U-Pb geochronology of three granitoid plutons and three granitic pegmatite dykes, largely from the Thompson Nickel Belt located along the northwestern Superior craton margin, was investigated to place constraints on the timing of felsic magmatism associated with closure of the Manikewan Ocean and final continent-continent collision to form the Trans-Hudson Orogen. These data indicate that 1840-1820 Ma granite magmatism along the Superior margin was more active than previously thought and that some magmatism extended beyond the Thompson Nickel Belt sensu stricto, including the 1836 ±3 Ma Mystery Lake granodiorite, 1822 ±5 Ma Wintering Lake granodiorite, and the 1825 ±8 Ma Fox Lake granite located in the Split Lake Block. Granitic pegmatites within the Thompson Nickel Belt were emplaced late in the collisional history in the period 1.79-1.75 Ga and include a 1770 ±2 Ma dyke exposed at the Thompson pit, a 1767 ±6 Ma dyke at the Pipe Pit, and a 1786 ±2 Ma dyke located at Paint Lake. The final stage of crustal amalgamation in the eastern Trans-Hudson Orogen involved Superior Province crustal thickening and partial melting forming 1.84-1.82 Ga granite magmas and then final collision at ~1.8 Ga between the Superior Province and a continental block to the west consisting of the previously amalgamated Sask and Hearne cratons. Heating of the Superior craton margin and granitic magmatism continued past peak metamorphism (1790-1750 Ma); this thermal event is represented by the emplacement of numerous late pegmatite dykes and evidenced by cooling dates recorded by metamorphic minerals (e.g., titanite) in reworked Archean gneisses and Proterozoic intrusions. La géochronologie U-Pb de trois plutons granitoïdes et de trois dykes de pegmatite granitique, provenant en grande partie de la Ceinture de nickel Thompson située le long de la bordure nord-ouest du craton du Supérieur, a été étudiée afin de délimiter le moment du magmatisme felsique associé à la fermeture de l'océan Manikewan et la collision finale continent à continent pour former l'orogène trans-hudsonien.
