Geomorphic and chronologic evidence from Amund and Ellef Ringnes islands documents the configuration, dynamics, and collapse of the northwest sector of the Innuitian Ice Sheet. These data record the inundation of the Ringnes Islands by northwestward-flowing ice from divides spanning the alpine and lowland sectors of the Innuitian Ice Sheet. Ice-flow indicators and granite dispersal along eastern Around Ringnes Island suggest Massey Sound was filled by an ice stream discharging coalescent alpine and lowland ice from Norwegian Bay. In contrast, the interior of Amund Ringnes Island was overridden by predominantly non-erosive, granite-free ice from a divide in the lowland sector of the ice sheet. Glacial landforms on Ellef Ringnes Island record coverage by largely non-erosive ice, but it remains uncertain whether these features relate to northward-flowing lowland ice or a cold-based local ice cap. Deglaciation of the Ringnes Islands commenced -10 000 [sup4]14C years ago. Deglacial dates between 9.7 and 9.2 ka BP record the sequential entry of marine fauna along Massey and Hassel sounds, concomitant with the southward retreat of trunk ice towards Norwegian Bay. These data suggest marine-based trunk glaciers were vulnerable to calving during pre-Holocene eustatic sea-level rise. However, deglacial dates from inner embayments indicate that residual ice caps persisted on Amund and Ellef Ringnes islands for 800 to 1400 14C years after retreat of trunk ice from the adjacent marine channels. Lateral meltwater channels record the subsequent retreat of these ice caps, which became increasingly confined within upland valleys after 8.6 ka BP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper evaluates the National Centers for Environmental Prediction - National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) reanalyses hydroclimatic data as an initial check for assessment of hydrologic impacts of climate change at the basin scale. A reanalysis dataset for daily precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature from the NCEP-NCAR global (NNGR) and regional (North American Regional Reanalysis or NARR) reanalysis project has been used as input into the semidistributed hydrologic model (Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydraulic Modeling System or HEC-HMS) for the period 1980-2005. An extensive analysis has been performed for assessing the performance of the reanalysis data generated flows compared with the observed inputs during May-November. The stream flows generated from the NARR dataset show encouraging results in simulating summertime low flows with less variability and fewer errors. The results indicate that NNGR results are less accurate and highly variable. This study suggests that NARR can be adequately used as an alternative in data-scarce regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar ages for hornblende, muscovite, and biotite from metamorphic and plutonic rocks from the Yukon–Tanana Upland, Alaska. Integration of our data with published [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar, kinematic, and metamorphic pressure (P) and temperature (T) data confirms and refines the complex interaction of metamorphism and tectonism proposed for the region. The oldest metamorphic episode(s) postdates Middle Permian magmatism and predates the intrusion of Late Triassic (215–212 Ma) granitoids into the Fortymile River assemblage (Taylor Mountain assemblage of previous papers). In the eastern Eagle quadrangle, rapid and widespread Early Jurassic cooling is indicated by ~188–186 Ma [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar plateau ages for hornblende from plutons that intrude the Fortymile River assemblage, and for metamorphic minerals from the Fortymile River assemblage and the structurally underlying Nasina assemblage. We interpret these Early Jurassic ages to represent cooling resulting from northwest-directed contraction that emplaced the Fortymile River assemblage onto the Nasina assemblage to the north as well as the Lake George assemblage to the south. This cooling was the final stage of a continuum of subduction-related contraction that produced crustal thickening, intermediate- to high-P metamorphism within both the Fortymile River assemblage and the structurally underlying Lake George assemblage, and Late Triassic and Early Jurassic plutonism in the Fortymile River and Nasina assemblages. Although a few metamorphic samples from the Lake George assemblage yield Jurassic [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar cooling ages, most yield Early Cretaceous [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar ages: hornblende ~135–115 Ma, and muscovite and biotite ~110–108 Ma. We interpret the Early Cretaceous metamorphic cooling, in most areas, to have resulted from regional extension and exhumation of the lower plate, previously tectonically thickened during Early Jurassic and older convergence.

TALL buildings ,SKYSCRAPERS ,CORPORATE power ,STRUCTURAL engineering - Abstract
Tall buildings, or skyscrapers, are icons of cities, symbols of corporate power, and a mark of national pride. Certain skyscrapers, such as the John Hancock Center and the Sears Tower in Chicago, are also marvels of engineering that have paved the way for ever increasing heights of structural systems. Since the 1960s, a series of new structural systems has been introduced with the objective of achieving economically-competitive and aesthetically-pleasing tall buildings without compromising safety. One of the great structural engineers responsible for the new structural systems was Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan. This paper provides a biographical sketch of Dr. Khan and discusses some of his innovations pertaining to high-rise buildings. It shows that his contributions led to a new vertical scale for the modern day city.Key words: aesthetics, architecture, innovation, structural system, tall building. This paper explores the applicability of wavelet transform for the analysis of strong and weak ground motions recorded on rock at Yerba Buena Island and on dredged sandfill at nearby Treasure Island about 2 km away during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in California. An interpretation of the results from this analysis is presented and discussed. The major important feature of this data set is that liquefaction occurred at the Treasure Island site during the strong shaking. The Daubechies 20-coefficient wavelet transform is utilized in this study. Results of the application of the wavelet transform can be summarized as follows: most of the energy of the earthquake at the Treasure Island site is in the frequency range of 0.58-1.77 Hz and arrives in the time interval between 11 and 15 s. For the Yerba Buena Island site, most of the energy lies within the frequency range of 1.15-3.53 Hz and arrives between 8 and 13 s. The analysis indicates that there are some large peaks at the highest resolution in the wavelet transforms at the Treasure Island site, which can be attributed to a progressive change in the stiffness characteristics of the soil. This paper focuses on the flux and characterization of organic substances in cave drip waters for a continental climate. At Marengo Cave in southern Indiana, there is seasonal variations in organic matter concentration in the cave drip water. High levels are introduced during the spring thaw, and lower levels occur during the rest of the year. The fluorescence spectra and ultrafiltration analysis suggest the majority of the organics contained in percolating waters were fulvic acids, with most being less than 1 kDa in size. The seasonal flush of organics from the soil could produce two different types of calcite in the speleothem deposited from these drip waters, a stronger fluorescing calcite during the spring and the less fluorescent calcite during the rest of the year. This is the first study of its type for this particular climatic region.

This paper presents some possible interpretations of the physical meaning of the lumped, toe, and skin Case damping factors, j[sub cL] , j[sub ct] , and j[sub cs] , respectively, which are extensively utilized in the dynamic analysis of pile driveability and capacity. A single degree of freedom model is employed to relate the Case damping to the hysteretic damping ratios of soil and pile materials. This relation and the damping ratios of soils and piles show that the Case damping factors for piles in sandy and clayey soils may overlap at all strain magnitudes. Coupling of pile toe and skin resistance is analyzed, and the j[sub cL] factor is found to be a function of the skin and toe resistance ratio of the pile. Consequently, the j[sub cL] factor is an important indicator with which the skin friction and toe resistance of piles can be separated. A database of 133 cases of dynamic pile tests in Florida has been used to substantiate the analyses and interpretations. The effects of the assumptions made in this paper are also discussed.Key words: pile dynamics, wave equation, Case damping, hysteretic damping, bearing capacity, skin friction.

ATMOSPHERIC mercury ,MERCURY ,MERCURY content of coal ,COAL-fired power plants ,ELECTRIC power production - Abstract
Atmospheric concentrations of elemental (Hg
0 ), reactive gaseous (RGM), and particulate (PHg) mercury were measured at two remote sites in the midwestern United States. Concurrent measurements of Hg0 , PHg, and RGM obtained at Devil’s Lake and Mt. Horeb, located approximately 65 km apart, showed that Hg0 and PHg concentrations were affected by regional, as well as local sources, while RGM was mainly impacted by local sources. Plumes reaching the Devil’s Lake site from a nearby coal-fired power plant significantly impacted SO2 and RGM concentrations at Devil’s Lake, but had little impact on Hg0 . Our findings suggest that traditional modeling approaches to assess sources of mercury deposited that utilize source emissions and large-scale grids may not be sufficient to predict mercury deposition at sensitive locations due to the importance of small-scale sources and processes. We suggest the use of a receptor-based monitoring to better understand mercury source–receptor relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
